oops .. can see it …. I wonder if Philips Arena will have a new pizza franchise in the concessions area?

I hope he drops mega-loads of moolah to make the Hawks. I think Sund may be put in retirement mode within the next 8 months …and LD may be looking at an assistant gig within 12 mos. My guess is most new owners want to bring in folks they know or have a good feel for. If Merulo has had a jonezin’ to own a team for “years”, he probably already has a short wish list of guys that he would want in key positions (GM and head coach).

Hey, will there be a 2012 NBA draft if the season is lost?

First move MC,

Bring in a quality GM and coach. Let them evaluate the roster. Instead of Drew and Sund. Good to have one person making the decisions for the Hawks.

I have been posting on the football and baseball sites and decided to post on the basketball site
since a new owner is set to arrive. I’ve decided to arrive along with him. I am more knowledgeable
about european sports but I do enjoy American cricket and rugby. I’m kidding,
the Braves and Bulldogs of course. I will poke my nose in from time to time as I do on the other

First order of business…….please, please replace those piss poor scoreboards that hang high in the rafters. The quality and technology feels like it came out of the 80’s. Philips should be embarrassed to have their name associated with those screens.

Second order of business…….win, with some excitement.

“Meruelo bought 80% stake in #Hawks and Philips for about $300 mil. Also assumed virtually all debt, including city bonds”

Guess he’s worth enough to drop 300x 1 million usd to purchase 80% of stock in the Franchise plus assume all debt(City Bonds)??

Congrats to this fan base who has gotten what they wished for; a single point of accountability.
The ASG is gone as far as we’re concerned. Perhaps Alex moves them out more and more as time goes by.

THE ASG should never be forgiven for selling away the Thrashers…that should be their legacy…that and giving up JC2…How JC2 name got involved in trade…for the life of I will never understand.

DMB, you are on the prowl I see…..but I gotta give it to you….this guy doesn’t sound like he knows much about the Hawks. Not sure if it means he will allow the ‘basketball’ people run the establishment, but I bet Rick Sund will work his magic and keep himself in the mix…at least for now…it just depends on who the owner leans on for advice.
If its Sund, oh boy….if its someone like a Hubie Brown, then maybe there is something good that is going to come out of this.
And, it might be better that we get a guy who knows business, but just has the sense to hire the ‘best’ basketball people he can find. I would think when he looks at Larry Drew’s salary, he thinks “Well, we have the lowest paid coach in the game, and we need to make a splash and bring together the fan base with a big name that does have championship experience.”

And no one say Larry Brown either!

I haven’t posted on this blog today. Just closed my practice and finished a ton of paperwork. I’m surprised MC put up a new blog today. 2 in 24 hours must be some record on the Beat! LOL!

I did however just leave Bradley’s Blog and I will re-post my comments here for a lack of anything to add to what I said there:

Pragmatic!

Once I read all the fine and varied opinions and learn more about Mr. Meruelo, I can make an impact statement of my own.

For now I am so stunned and elated that a change is gonna’ come, that I’ve been rendered speechless. I just learned of this great news when the red light on my B-Berry began flashing while I was in church yesterday:

I was praying that a change was gonna’ come on many fronts. Little did I know it was gonna’ be my Hawks on that day, that hour and that moment.

As soon as I gather my self up off the floor? I’m gonna’ come up swinging. That and if I ever get to use my own user ID ever again without “Lurch” (da troll), stalking me. LOL & smdh. (she pffts & smirks)

I have no interest in posting under multiple I’d’s nor time to waste or play games with that. Besides, content reveals character and my cohorts know me, my style and my swagger, just like I know them, their style and their swagger. (lol)

Let’s see: if $300 million represents 80% of the NPV of the franchise plus real estate plus outstanding debt then the amortised value of the Hawks , then $375 million would represent approximately 100 % of the team’s value. If the ASG paid $200 million for the Hawks and Thrashers and sold the Thrashers for say,$125 million then they has a net return on investment of, assuming a basis of $200 million , of 47%. that doesn’t account for taxes, amoritization and interest and of course legal fees.
But the characterization of NBA ownership as being unprofitable doesn’t seem to comport with the facts. The Sixers sold at a premium as well. Mr. Stern, please tell me again how the owners are loosing money and who is holding a gun to their head(s) to force them to continue down the primrose path?

It’s sad once the lockout began, I wasn’t all that down about it. Now with a new owner…it’s as though new life has sprung into me. I’m getting more and more anxious for something to be done with the CBA.

By the way, what exactly is going on with the CBA? Who wants what and why? Whose winning and whose losing….because I only seem to understand these things when they’re explained by some of you bloggers…..

Weird eh?

Patrick

August 9th, 2011
1:01 am

I’m sure if he had stuff to write about and was getting paid for it, he would. What do you want him to comment on. Read his story on the new owner. It is better than anything that DOL will ever put out.

Buddy Grizzard

August 9th, 2011
1:37 am

EmirS.,

The situation with the lockout is that players are seeking for the National Labor Relations Board to agree with their position that the owners have not negotiated in good faith. Meanwhile the owners have made a preemptive strike in the courts, seeking to have a judge agree with their position that the lockout does not violate antitrust laws and may proceed.

While both sides wait for respective rulings, nothing is going to happen. The owners are trying to break the union and get a CBA that puts 100s of millions of dollars in their pocket. Meanwhile, the NBA will soon be negotiating a TV deal at a time when advertising for live events is becoming more valuable. In the age of Tivo, many people wait to watch their favorite shows so they can skip the commercials. Live events such as sports are advertisers’ best opportunity to keep viewers in front of the TV where their commercials can actually be seen.

So the owners are crying poverty while shelling out record prices for garbage franchises like Golden State and handing out $120 million contracts to non-money players like Joe Johnson. Meanwhile, after the CBA is signed, owners will cash in on a new TV deal and watch their franchise values go through the roof.

KevinM

August 9th, 2011
2:57 am

ILL-Logical, your comments are just an example of the hypocrisy of the NBA owners.
If Stern can sell owner poverty to the players, this will be his latest and greatest achievement as commish. The players are going to stand their ground on this one.
Golden State sold for 450M…..guys were lining up to pay that price. Doesn’t sound like tough times going on to me…..
The Joe Johnson contract is full of hypocrisy as the owners just can’t defend justifying their stances here. Once the games start going by, you are going to see some activity.
If the players can hold out long enough, the dissension towards the owners will grow.
Can you tell I favor the guys who don’t set the prices? The owners are blaming everyone but themselves.

I would trade Sund, Drew and a second round pick for Lindsey and Casey.

I think it’s a well calculated financial move by the new owner to buy the Hawks this year. Because of the lockout, Drew will get a reduced salary, and Rick Sund only has one year left. I think the new owner will let this season/lockout play itself out, and then he will look to bring in his guys (coach and GM) next offseason.

Also, if there is a lockout, players wont be getting paid, so he may save a little bit of money there, since the ASG was losing money each season.

Well the era of The ASKillerG has finally come to an end. PTL!

The ASKG were the equivalent of 8 feces throwing orangutans. The only suits they filed were against one another.

They never filed into the arena wearing suits to watch their own team play – yet they criticized fans for not doing so. They never spent money wisely (as Najeh Davenpoop would say).

Najeh also coined the phrase:

“8 feces throwing orangutans”, which I succinctly adopted and stole from him. That is the most accurate depiction of The ASKG (a phrase I coined), I have ever heard.

So, welcome Alex Meruelo, your fan base will be as rabid as you make them be. We are hungry, beaten and teased from years past, mired with mediocrity and not a snowball’s chance in hell of winning anything to speak of!

Find us a Dwight Howard and unleash Jeff Teague – please!

Promote the New Look Hawks well:

Offer $2 Beer nights (mid-week)
Free garage parking for early arrivals
Create a Game Day Experience
Open the gates 3 hours early (with BOGO promos)

Give the 1st 10,000 ticket holders the lottery tickets as they enter the gates – first come first serve! When the tickets run out, that’s it. Issue one ticket per ticket stub collected @ the turn stiles.

Price the Jerseys BOGO until Game Time starts and open the doors, 3 hours early. A packed arena is the best way to energize the players!

They look for and need fan support, it demoralizes players like Joe, Josh and Al when the stands are empty at the ball toss. The ASKG NEVER did anything to reward the fans.

Hopefully, Meruelo will dare to be different.

Folks it’s finally time to bury the ghost of ASG! Those tight-wad clowns changed our team colors to generic blue and red. Let’s show ASG how much we hate them by starting a campaign to beg our new owner to go back to the red and gold Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb, Pistol Pete and Lou Hudson wore before those ASG clowns hijacked our beloved Atlanta Hawks. They placed a stent in the 99%. I finally got back to playing golf 5 x a week. Last Monday I was playing & was going down to the 8th tee (all down hill) when I realilized that I had no brakes & then the rear tire came off throwing me into the pavement & my friend into the grass. After bleeding from my left eye ,many fractures on the left side of my face, bleeding elbows & knees & also a shattered wrist I am home from the hospital after a week in great pain. I had bleeding in the brain & had to be taken off my plavix which I am now back on. I am in great pain & am hoping to be feeling better hopefully soon. Looks like the Hawks new owner better have a plan to get fans in the seats and this payroll under control…

“Let’s take a look at one case in point. The Atlanta Hawks are one of the more competitive teams in the Eastern Conference, having made the playoffs for four straight seasons, but they are also one of many NBA teams that struggle to fill their arenas for 41 home dates. Last season the Hawks were 22nd in the NBA in attendance, selling just 83.4% of their tickets. That put them below non-playoff teams like the Charlotte Bobcats, Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons. That was down a bit from the previous season, but it was pretty average for the Hawks, whose arena is located in the middle of one of the worst traffic malaise in the country.

Logically, a team that is perennially in the 20’s in terms of attendance would not offer insane contracts to its players, knowing that it is likely to be difficult to balance their budget with top-dollar players, yet that’s exactly what the Hawks did last summer. When shooting guard Joe Johnson became a restricted free agent the Hawks locked him into a contract that will pay him $20.5 million per season average over the next six years. That makes some sense of Johnson was an MVP candidate and had lead the Hawks to multiple deep playoff runs, but neither of those things is the case. The Hawks gave MVP money to a player who has never taken them past the second round.”

Of course it’s also located right on a MARTA line, but god forbid any of our friends in the northern suburbs gets on a train any time soon.

The Braves have a legitimate gripe about the location of the stadium. The Hawks and Falcons do not. There is nothing wrong with the location of the Dome and Philips.

Melvin,

The lack of consistency on the court (and the blowouts), and the leadership off the court (LD and Sund) has contributed to fan apathy. Therefore, I think the new owner will make changes (both on the court and off) to try and get fans more excited about the team.

Ground Hog Day!

O’Brien, that is a really fine observation there. The blow outs and apathy from the GM, Coach and this team has become par for the day.

What is a fan to do, but fall in line with apathy?
We all said at the end of last season that, “There needs to be a major shake up with this roster!”

But, don’t stop there? Look at the management and coach as well. Looks like we got more than we asked for – A Single New Owner with deep pockets, is just what the doctor ordered. Now, we can look to change this DVD and watch a different movie. I can’t wait to see the changes, I just hope it comes fast and furious in every area possible.

This core needs to be broken up, somehow. Just do it wisely, I ask.

najeh, i live in the northern burbs, voted for marta in the first referendum in the late 60’s early 70’s and was appalled there was so little vision at that time by surrounding counties and their leadership as well as within marta. with that said, i find it to be the antithesis of getting there in as timely manner. i tried it during the boston playoffs and was appalled how long it took. i can get from the phillips door home in 25 minutes by car well planned and executed i assure you. that is somewhere between the time the first train arrives at the phillips or before the switch you have to make to go north and get another train. it is not user friendly sadly enough from the north and it doesnt cross link or go where it needs to go. for example, i have to drive half as far as it takes to get down town just to get to the closest marta, then wait. it was poorly designed conceptually and physically. sorry, that is too easy and simple of a shot for me to let go.

well, i can say good bye to my punching bag, the broken atlanta spirit group, aka BASG, that i pointed out from the outset of this blog about summer of 2005, was the problem, not woody, bk or jj even in the dark days. they robbed and plundered and had the lawyers and accountants to do it as they continue law suits within legal groups almost unheard of. man what arrogance they had and displayed as they floundered and stole and continued the party line of look what we are doing for you and we deserve you to come even though our formula for success hasnt changed a bit.

at least the new guy realizes he will have to use a more proactive approach of win the respect of my customers before building anything going forward. just the same, it is going from the known to the unknown and that is dangerous. so, i hold my applause and excitement until further down the road. it is better to know your enemy than not, so to speak. we knew the basg as they cremated their own brand all the while crying out it is someone else’s fault. let us see how the new owner builds the brand he has now inherited of the hawks, from the destroyed brand of the basg.

i have missed the blog and all of you guys this summer to forget.

MC, obviously, for anyone to see it otherwise dont get it, it must be out of your hands for you to be so quiet to your blog members. sad to see they have tied your hands behind your back and away from the keyboard. to say otherwise might cost your job so we are here waiting for any news.

The $1.2 million renovation for the Headlines Bar and Grill is an important step in what needs to become a complete overhall of Phillips Arena’s physical plant. An outcome could be another NBA ALL Star game-Houston just got the 2013- to re establish Atlanta’s mojo for the Association. The lockout won’t be a problem with a renovation, in fact it could provide an incentive for the fans to check both the team and Philllips when the lockout ends.

HAWKS FANS

I too desire an ownership change more than anything but this pending acquisition of the Hawks
gives me reason to pause.

Based on this article, there could be a conflict of interest between Majority owner (Meruelo), Minority owners (ASG) and Lenders (ASG). In other words, the Hawks deal (as currently constructed) could be heavily rigged in favor of the ASG. It gives the appearance of a Puppet Ownership who could be control by his minority partners.

If he is financing this way. It begs to question his ability to add financial value to the Hawks Organization and the team. The only people here who is likely to win is the ASG who will be holding 40% of his note of 300M along with their cash from the sell. Meruelo must acquire that along with his other operating expenses. If you’re a Hawk fan that should sound pretty scary.

If he misfires with his newly found Hawk venture, it is conceivable that Meruelo could be filing Chapter 7 in five year or have a fire sell to cut his losses.

I hope I’m wrong

Phuch Le’ Duch!

I hate to feed it, but this troll has been limping around the AJC Blogs for a couple years. Mainly, MC’s Hawks Beat. It has amounted to nothing more than a steroid – rant.

It is very incoherent and it mumbles a lot. There is no clear intent, (except a yearn for attention). It’s content is severly lacking. There really seems to be no point to it all.

It’s theme appears to be that of sexual frustration in nature. It is highly ineffective though, becasue everyone else on it’s hit list appears to be just fine in the bed room department. But, hey! What do I know?

I’m just here to talk Hawks Basketball not render pyscho-therapy. The whole thing just seems pitiful to me.
________________

Meanwhile, back on the Hawks Beat, the real topic of the day is The ASKG is all but irrelevant, because we fans get a single new owner with what appears to be deep pockets. I just hope he turns things around in the corporate offices and within the management of our Hawks and all that translates into a winning Hawks season with some upgrade of talent on this “almost there” roster.

Najeh,

I am not a football fan, but as an “adopted atlantan” I follow at a moderate distance what happens with all ATL teams (I do watch football every once in a while).

I watched with some morbid curiosity Vick’s comeback last year so my guess is that it is painful to go through this experience as a Falcons’ fan.

But, as a layman asking an opinion, don’t you think Vick in ATL may not have been exactly the same player that he apparently has become after his time in jail and his redemption?

As his path into unlawful and questionable activities apparently testifies, wasn’t Vick more or less stranded in a “vastly talented, already extremely wealthy, but not focused enough” mode?

Could it be that after his conviction he would always need a fresh start somewhere else in order to going back into full warrior mode? He also had to prove his worth last year in order to get the $$ and be able to pay his debts, so the space for him to show flashes of immense talent but lack of maturity was gone.

I would go out on limb and say that in much much much less extent, J-Smoove suffers from the same problems.

He is not was talented/gifted as Vick and also not as potentially volatile, but he lacks the maturity that Vick also seemed to lack.

Am I wrong?

sorry vava74, that is pure unadulterated nonsense (would say it louder if i could as in bs) and slander to even come close to putting josh in that light. as a fan who loved to see mike vick play, we were often not allowed to because he was not interested in learning the game of playing it, training to do it and staying sober mentally and that is testimony. i suspected he was stoned sometimes he played back then specifically a game in san diego and it was confirmed along the way where he even admitted to quitting. he had the same high ankle sprain josh had and took three months to recover and josh was out there in two weeks flying through the air as mike was saying he couldnt be himself with the injury essentially quitting on his coach who was bringing him along correctly.

thankfully mike has served his time and has righted himself from the depths he took himself that no one else had a part in, associating himself with the wrong crowd. josh drives me crazy and i have been the first here to suggest he could use a bit of help in the sports psych field as many have including braves icon john smoltz but josh smith has always played hard though sometimes not in the way people wanted him to and has trained hard to develop every step of the way including his three ball ;-) and several years ago to going to houston to work with the dream, long before queen had a notion to do it. dont put josh in that category. sorry, it doesnt belong in a conversation about josh smith and shallow of you to go there as an occasional atl sports fan. maybe compare him with the self destructive powers of tiger as someone who had the world at his finger tips, as did mike, to think he was above it all, to see it fly away in a burning heap but not josh
