@ATL LEGEND—I promise you that Pistol Pete and Lou Hudson NEVER wore any GOLD. The gold, which was actually yellow, didn’t show up until much later. Maybe you were born in Atlanta but you must not have been around for the 70’s. Go do some research.

@Ain’t That the Truth, Ruth You must be blind. The 1974-1977 Atlanta Hawks wore uniforms with Red and Gold trim. Pistol Pete and Lou Hudson played for the Hawks during that time period. You need your bi-focals checked. I’ve been following the Hawks since 1979 and have been a Hawks fan ever since I was a little kid. You need to do some research or get your eyes checked.

My many blog friends 2011 has been a very bad year for my hawks & myself. I will be 72 this coming Jan. April 27 I had a heart attack with a 99 % blockage & a 60 % blockage. They placed a stent in the 99%. I finally got back to playing golf 5 x a week. Last Monday I was playing & was going down to the 8th tee (all down hill) when I realilized that I had no brakes & then the rear tire came off throwing me into the pavement & my friend into the grass. After bleeding from my left eye ,many fractures on the left side of my face, bleeding elbows & knees & also a shattered wrist I am home from the hospital after a week in great pain. I had bleeding in the brain & had to be taken off my plavix which I am now back on. I am in great pain & am hoping to be feeling better hopefully soon. I am hoping to see a new direction in the hawks need to get rid of ld & Rick as soon as possible.

Looks like the Hawks new owner better have a plan to get fans in the seats and this payroll under control…
“Let’s take a look at one case in point. The Atlanta Hawks are one of the more competitive teams in the Eastern Conference, having made the playoffs for four straight seasons, but they are also one of many NBA teams that struggle to fill their arenas for 41 home dates. Last season the Hawks were 22nd in the NBA in attendance, selling just 83.4% of their tickets. That put them below non-playoff teams like the Charlotte Bobcats, Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons. That was down a bit from the previous season, but it was pretty average for the Hawks, whose arena is located in the middle of one of the worst traffic malaise in the country.
Logically, a team that is perennially in the 20’s in terms of attendance would not offer insane contracts to its players, knowing that it is likely to be difficult to balance their budget with top-dollar players, yet that’s exactly what the Hawks did last summer. When shooting guard Joe Johnson became a restricted free agent the Hawks locked him into a contract that will pay him $20.5 million per season average over the next six years. That makes some sense of Johnson was an MVP candidate and had lead the Hawks to multiple deep playoff runs, but neither of those things is the case. The Hawks gave MVP money to a player who has never taken them past the second round.”

Of course it’s also located right on a MARTA line, but god forbid any of our friends in the northern suburbs gets on a train any time soon.
The Braves have a legitimate gripe about the location of the stadium. The Hawks and Falcons do not. There is nothing wrong with the location of the Dome and Philips.

Melvin,
The lack of consistency on the court (and the blowouts), and the leadership off the court (LD and Sund) has contributed to fan apathy. Therefore, I think the new owner will make changes (both on the court and off) to try and get fans more excited about the team.

Ground Hog Day!
O’Brien, that is a really fine observation there. The blow outs and apathy from the GM, Coach and this team has become par for the day.
What is a fan to do, but fall in line with apathy?
We all said at the end of last season that, “There needs to be a major shake up with this roster!”
But, don’t stop there? Look at the management and coach as well. Looks like we got more than we asked for – A Single New Owner with deep pockets, is just what the doctor ordered. Now, we can look to change this DVD and watch a different movie. I can’t wait to see the changes, I just hope it comes fast and furious in every area possible.
This core needs to be broken up, somehow. Just do it wisely, I ask.

najeh, i live in the northern burbs, voted for marta in the first referendum in the late 60’s early 70’s and was appalled there was so little vision at that time by surrounding counties and their leadership as well as within marta. with that said, i find it to be the antithesis of getting there in as timely manner. i tried it during the boston playoffs and was appalled how long it took. i can get from the phillips door home in 25 minutes by car well planned and executed i assure you. that is somewhere between the time the first train arrives at the phillips or before the switch you have to make to go north and get another train. it is not user friendly sadly enough from the north and it doesnt cross link or go where it needs to go. for example, i have to drive half as far as it takes to get down town just to get to the closest marta, then wait. it was poorly designed conceptually and physically. sorry, that is too easy and simple of a shot for me to let go.
well, i can say good bye to my punching bag, the broken atlanta spirit group, aka BASG, that i pointed out from the outset of this blog about summer of 2005, was the problem, not woody, bk or jj even in the dark days. they robbed and plundered and had the lawyers and accountants to do it as they continue law suits within legal groups almost unheard of. man what arrogance they had and displayed as they floundered and stole and continued the party line of look what we are doing for you and we deserve you to come even though our formula for success hasnt changed a bit.
at least the new guy realizes he will have to use a more proactive approach of win the respect of my customers before building anything going forward. just the same, it is going from the known to the unknown and that is dangerous. so, i hold my applause and excitement until further down the road. it is better to know your enemy than not, so to speak. we knew the basg as they cremated their own brand all the while crying out it is someone else’s fault. let us see how the new owner builds the brand he has now inherited of the hawks, from the destroyed brand of the basg.
i have missed the blog and all of you guys this summer to forget.
MC, obviously, for anyone to see it otherwise dont get it, it must be out of your hands for you to be so quiet to your blog members. sad to see they have tied your hands behind your back and away from the keyboard. to say otherwise might cost your job so we are here waiting for any news.
rusty get well, long road but part of it, maybe the worst, is travelled. let me know if i can help.

Just watch the CNN interview with the new owner. Got say the Hawks PR department needs to give him a refresher on how to conduct a successful interview. But I was impressed with how humble he seems. I think he will understand what his customers (us fans) want and need and work to give us a valuable product. Things are looking up for our Hawks.

The $1.2 million renovation for the Headlines Bar and Grill is an important step in what needs to become a complete overhall of Phillips Arena’s physical plant. An outcome could be another NBA ALL Star game-Houston just got the 2013- to re establish Atlanta’s mojo for the Association. The lockout won’t be a problem with a renovation, in fact it could provide an incentive for the fans to check both the team and Philllips when the lockout ends.

HAWKS FANS
I too desire an ownership change more than anything but this pending acquisition of the Hawks
gives me reason to pause.
Based on this article, there could be a conflict of interest between Majority owner (Meruelo), Minority owners (ASG) and Lenders (ASG). In other words, the Hawks deal (as currently constructed) could be heavily rigged in favor of the ASG. It gives the appearance of a Puppet Ownership who could be control by his minority partners.
If he is financing this way. It begs to question his ability to add financial value to the Hawks Organization and the team. The only people here who is likely to win is the ASG who will be holding 40% of his note of 300M along with their cash from the sell. Meruelo must acquire that along with his other operating expenses. If you’re a Hawk fan that should sound pretty scary.
If he misfires with his newly found Hawk venture, it is conceivable that Meruelo could be filing Chapter 7 in five year or have a fire sell to cut his losses.
I hope I’m wrong

Troll on Steroids!
Phuch Le’ Duch!
I hate to feed it, but this troll has been limping around the AJC Blogs for a couple years. Mainly, MC’s Hawks Beat. It has amounted to nothing more than a steroid – rant.
It is very incoherent and it mumbles a lot. There is no clear intent, (except a yearn for attention). It’s content is severly lacking. There really seems to be no point to it all.
It’s theme appears to be that of sexual frustration in nature. It is highly ineffective though, becasue everyone else on it’s hit list appears to be just fine in the bed room department. But, hey! What do I know?
I’m just here to talk Hawks Basketball not render pyscho-therapy. The whole thing just seems pitiful to me.
________________
Meanwhile, back on the Hawks Beat, the real topic of the day is The ASKG is all but irrelevant, because we fans get a single new owner with what appears to be deep pockets. I just hope he turns things around in the corporate offices and within the management of our Hawks and all that translates into a winning Hawks season with some upgrade of talent on this “almost there” roster.
