Atlanta Hawks: Camp wrap

  • The Hawks broke camp today and now head for the lockout summer.
  • No matter what happens with the new CBA the Hawks are probably going to have to fill some needs by finding some values in free agency. They sure could use the summer league. “It throws a little bit of a wrench into things,” L.D. said. “We will just have to go with what we have as far as evaluating these guys.”
  • We already know the Hawks are looking to add toughness. What else? “Shooters,” L.D. said. “We need knock-down shooters. Not the guys that are capable of making shots. We need guys that they are open, they get that ball, the opposition is saying, ‘Uh-oh.’ Those type guys. Whether we will find them with these [camp] guys. . . . We had some guys that are pretty good shooters here.”
  • L.D. said the he suspects the camp was “very, very competitive” because the Hawks have so many open spots. He was set to meet with management today to compare notes on the players. “I will let Rick and them know who I like, they will let me know who they like,” he said. “We will talk about it as a staff and we will start making decisions. Some of these guys have other workouts. We will talk about the ones we do like, talk to agents and see if we can get them back to veterans’ camp.”
  • Joe Alexander followed up a strong D-League season with a good showing for the Hawks, who have an opening in the power rotation behind Al, Josh and Zaza. “I would love to be here, obviously,” Alexander said.
  • The lockout complicates matters for free agents like Alexander. “I guess if I get some kind of word from a team, I might stick around [this summer],” he said. “But otherwise I will have to look at options overseas.”
  • “When I think about [Alexander] when he came into the league, he was predominantly a jump-shooter and he took a lot of threes,” L.D. said. “He hasn’t taken one three since he’s been here in camp. Down low when he has the ball he really looks to finesse and then muscle his way to the basket. I think with him picking up a little weight and getting stronger I think he has pretty much solidified who he is, and that’s a four.”
  • Omar Samhan is a legitimately big dude–maybe too big. He’s not mobile or athletic.
  • Ivan Johnson looked stout, athletic and skilled. Johnson was productive in the D-League last season.
  • Johnson played with a real edge during the couple brief scrimmage sequences media types got to watch. That pretty much jibes with this take on Johnson by Jonathan Givony at DraftExpress.com
  • Seeing Keith Benson next to Johnson and Samhan (and even Alexander) was quite the contrast. “It’s something he’s going to have to get acclimated to as far as banging guys bigger and stronger than him,” Drew said. “During his collegiate career I’m sure he hasn’t banged with these type guys on a consistent basis. With a guy with his frame that can put some wear and tear on your body. Certainly I’m sure he sees where he needs to get stronger and pick up some weight. But I see some things that I really like about him. I think he can help this ballclub.”
  • The refs hired by the Hawks didn’t seem to be calling many fouls. I’m thinking that was by design. “We’ve got some tough guys out here, some guys that really look to bang and mix it up,” Drew said.
  • Zaza dropped by camp and, like Al, said he’s not sure if he would play for his national team this summer because of insurance concerns. Usually the NBA pays for the policies.

SteveW isnt that a negative of Al more than positive. Al played pf most of the playoffs. And on offense his responsibility is to crash the board while it wa Josh’s job to get back on defense. I think if you have a system where Josh is instructed to crash the boards, he will average double digit rebounds.

Gasol says sitting out a season would be too “weird” especially as the NBA is coming off a “great year” with the Dallas Mavericks beating the favored Miami Heat in the finals.

Gasol is playing in the European Championship in September, when Spain can clinch its place for the 2012 Olympics.

As for brother Marc’s future, Gasol would like to “see him with a franchise that has better options” than the Memphis Grizzlies.

Hawks pondering Tskitishvili deal

By Marc J. Spears
Denver Post Staff Writer

The Nuggets have been fielding phone calls from teams interested in trading for forward Nikoloz Tskitishvili.
An NBA source said the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers have inquired about Tskitishvili. The Nuggets are in search of a defensive-minded swingman, and the 7-foot- 1, 235-pound Tskitishvili could be used as bait.

The 7′1″ guy from Denver sounds like the Hawks are looking to go big, that’s great for the fans! Al and Josh said, they need some help banging in the paint to be any type of contender. Size with talent/skills as we all know, is hard to come by.

Hilton “goose neck” Armstrong, saw the handwriting on the wall. First with Rolle and now with Benson. If we sign Lighty and who ever else you guys like from that camp roster, we might make some noise. We just need some rebounders and defenders to sure things up. This offense needs to be revamped too. Double screens and pick & rolls with a lot of off ball movement should do the trick. But mainly, defense.

I hope everybody stays in shape, don’t get locked up and we should remain in the top 4 in the east.

“I am sure we all agree if Doug Collins was coaching the Hawks in the semis than LD Hawks would’ve been playing the Heat. Do you agree or disagree?” – brigadierjerry

Agree.

“Tell me I’m wrong, but I get the feeling that Larry is totally satisfied with last year’s results. His son would still be running the point at UNC if he had any say-so.” – KevinM

You are not wrong. UNC wins the NCAA championship this year with Kendall Marshall at point. Marshall is listed on nbadraft.net’s mock draft for next year… don’t see LD II on there… hmmm….

pedro el gitano – Jamal Crawford no jugar a la defensiva.

“We don’t know if Childress can return to being the Childress who played for the Hawks, but if Phoenix throws in a future first round pick, would you make that trade?” – O’Brien

No because Chills wouldn’t play for the Hawks. That’s why they had to trade him for nothing, because he has beef with the organization for not paying him and forcing him to sign overseas for a team that’s not always known for paying its players. Who knows if he ever actually got all that money he was promised to go to Greece.

“Marvin just might have had his surgery at the right time. He’ll have plenty of time to “rest and recupe’. SMH” – wordsmithtom

I hope you’re right. But when I look at Marvin and all the weight he’s carrying I think of Larry Johnson. Once LJ hurt his back he could never recover. I’ve been predicting that Marv will go back to his pre-Jamal form next season until I heard about the injury. I would love to see him make a full recovery and return to being a legit rotation player.

But if you watch that CHI series, the first few games when he started he provided next to nothing. I hope when the lockout ends all of the Hawks players will have had self discipline and spent the time getting in the best shape of their lives for a chance to make it to the ECF and establish themselves as the best Atlanta Hawks team ever. They have the potential but if Marv or Josh or anybody comes to camp looking like post-lockout Shawn Kemp, forget about it.

If I’m not mistaken, LD’s contract says his salary will be reduced this season because of the lockout. And we know that players will not get paid either.

“Etan Thomas was #2 on the Hawks in win shares per minute.”

Math is not your strong suit sir/ma’am.
Etan Thomas:
= Sample/Scenario: 32 yo backup big man on team looking for defensive Center
= Games 13
= Total minutes 82
= Wins Generated Per 48 minutes in (82 minutes): .130, 13%
REMINDER: minutes in ONE BASKETBALL GAME: 48

(82 TOTAL minutes * 13%) / 48 minutes(A BASKETBALL GAME)=

0.2 Wins Generated for Etan Thomas

“Thabeet’s 0.109 win shares per minute”
2009-2010
Sample/Scenario: Rookie year, Marc Gasol’s backup on a team with all around bad defense.
– Lowest Defensive Points every 100 possessions Allowed on Team
– 22 yo backup Center from day 1 (Spanish League MVP Marc Gasol)
- Games 68
Total minutes 883
Wins Generated Per 48 minutes in (883 minutes): .109, 10.9%
REMINDER-minutes in ONE BASKETBALL GAME: 48
(883 TOTAL minutes * 10.9%) / 48 minutes=

2.0 Wins Generated

Sample you used was after he was the best defensive ranked player on the team he got benched from day one,
for a 6′9 Darrell Arthur. Grizzlies lost by 15 (to the undersized Hawks nonetheless). Great way to start a season huh?
keeps coming off the bench and 2 games later 5 fouls in 7 minutes. You think the refs don’t know when someone’s getting the scrub treatment.

He goes from 30 minutes against Dallas and getting away with calls against Vince and holding Dwight to 6 points in Orlando in a start to 5 fouls in 7 or 8 minutes against Minnesota?

lol. I know Memphis had bad defense but watch the games and use your head.

Roy Hibbert
Sample/Scenario: Rookie year, big man
Wins Generated: 2.1 wins, 1008 minutes.

This year. 3.6 wins, 2400 minutes.

Why? Big slow on defense (7′2), slows the offense, shoots 46% and all from two point land.

But you guys would probably take this guy for Josh and watch him eat possessions and play only 28 mpg.

Brook Lopez career high: 12.5% WS/48 – slows offense, defense, rebounding +scoring
Thabeet career high: 10.9% – +not ball dependent, blocks shots, 61% shooting on a bad team – lacks scoring
Jordan Hill: post NY trade 13.5%
(was disinterested this year, bcuz of inconsistent minutes Adelman hunting playoffs on a team w/ no defense)

Varejao w/o Lebron: 10% this year
Jason Collins: 5%

If we filled our team out with 12-13% players then we’d win 50 games.

BEcause of $, with Al we have a good piece at 17.9% and then he has 5%-9% guys like Collins to complement him.

Joe and Marvin have never put together 15 wins, they cannibalize each others shots.

Trying to build around Horford is idiotic. #1 he’s at Miami Chris Bosh (3rd option)/33 yo Kobe level.

Who are we going to get? Bynum’s 26 minutes per game. Gasol’s 14 wins per game at some discount?

The superstar model is holding us back just like MEM with Gasol. U cant get those players

Also we have shooters w/o defense. Shooters that need shots to generate wins.

Joe has a good game Marvin Has a bad one. Marvin good Josh bad etc and then we’re small so that equals losses on the boards/defense.

We could get Brook Lopez himself and his career high Wins is 6. Same as Marvin Williams. Terrible.

Better than Thabeet any day of the year, but I’d take Al as a PF long before I’d take Brown as our starting center.

I’m wondering where this logic comes from, considering Brown couldn’t hold the starting center spot anywhere else. Wait, it must be Brown’s prolific shot-blocking skills (0.6 bpg career) or his incredible work on the glass (career 5.6 rpg).

Would I take him over Zaza (or better yet in tandem with him)? Yeah.

I have no hopes for Marvin whatsoever. None.

Way better off hoping Josh develops a reliable jumper and the brain cells necessary to recognize and implement his actual strengths in the game.

Or that Al decides “F it, I’m playing center, and I’m gonna beast everybody in my way.”

Or that Larry Drew scraps his asinine offense that Joe refuses to play along with.

Or that Joe proves himself worthy of $125 million.

Kwame Brown/ Zaza Pachulia

Kwame’s actually 25% worse than Pachulia over his career and he had Kobe and Odom taking attention off of him yet he still could not find a niche.
Niche is shot blocking clogging the lane blah blah blah

so Kwame Brown for 26 minutes (high risk – low reward).
Oh boy.
You do know that a big PF like Boozer can switch to Kwame just like Collins.
Hash actually shoots 10% better but whatever…

- Williams and Joe have never generated more than 14 wins together.
- Why? Joe is a ballhog and even before Jamal Marvin was an unagressive ball watcher being defended by 3s.

Josh was less productive than Zaza on a per minute basis.

If we had 12 above average players we’d be above average.
But we don’t we have a bunch of jump shooters who can’t defend and then a defender who can’t shoot,

Zaza is our best two wat player for his position. Not imo but in the regular AND postseason. Tyson

- Chandler played 26 mpg and had his best per minute because of Kidd Marion and Dirk’s defense and he Didn’t STEAL shots from each other like our entire roster does.

Then on the other end he got easy layups. 69.7% True Shooting,

Hash would be the same way with Motiejunas Joe and Josh and Teague.
Would Horford / kwame be the same way with Joe and Josh and Teague? No, none of them are athletic 7′1 guys who stay in the paint.
……….

J. Teague (36) + J. Johnson (36) + Josh Smith (36) + {Kwame Brown (36)} + Al Horford (36)

I would take a rotation of Zaza, Benson, Collins…
and a situational Al @ the [5]
with no Kwame in the equation whatsoever.
Why would he even be worthy of minutes?

Sign Ajinca and Coach him up.
Oh I forgot;
NBA coaches don’t [Coach / Teach].

They draw plays on clipboards during timeouts.
(after they waste 70% of the time conversing with asst non-teachers)

It would be innovative and radical
but interesting nontheless if an NBA coach
actually took the time to teach / instruct their players.
Given the fact that today’s NBA is mostly made up of children
brought up through AAU, ill prepared in fundamentals,
and little if any collegiate coaching.
*(college coaches don’t instruct much anymore either)
If NBA coaches would coach the kids (rooks) teams wouldn’t
have to recycle dried up ol’ cow chips with bad hands.
They could play hungry young’uns scrappin’ for a niche.

High school coaches should be coaching these dudes as youngsters. The NBA is to refine skills already learned. Can anybody on the Hawks use glass besides the coaching staff? You learn that skill in 6th grade…….dang…..

Hawks were 10-11 against the West..Not that bad…

I forgot about All NBA Slim. He’s going to average 20 and 10 playing power forward and the Hawks will reach the Eastern Conference Finals.

“7′ 3″ and he’s benched for a 6′ 9″ journeyman?”
“Arthur was originally drafted by the New Orleans Hornets in 2008 but after two trades ended up with the Memphis Grizzlies, with whom he signed on July 8, 2008.”

Team w/Player [Points Scored/Produced] in 100 possessions
Marc Gasol: 121 – 2469 minutes
Zach Randolph: 115 – 3051 minutes
Hasheem Thabeet: 113 – 883 minutes

Darrell Arthur: 96 – 457 minutes

Team/Player Points Allowed in 100 possessions
Hasheem Thabeet: 105 – 883 minutes

D. Arthur: 108 457 minutes

“As much as the game is made easier by being taller, I suppose it’s also probably complicated by being enormous. So when we see Hasheem Thabeet do some really, really awkward things, it stands out for us; it shouldn’t stand out, that’s just how tall people move.

Back to the advantages, though. By being enormous and having both quicks and hops, Thabeet causes a lot of problems on the defensive end that we never see. We do see him hitting his head on the rim trying to block a shot or him making a late (or wrong) rotation, but we don’t see teams never getting into the paint or not getting layups. Why? Because Thabeet’s presence made them never happen.
After watching last night, I’m fully convinced that Coach Hollins should be playing Thabeet at least 18 minutes a game every single game. The Grizzlies defense looked lock-down good with him on the floor. You might argue that it was just one game, I’d argue it appeared to be fully within what his underlying statistics would expect.

Don’t take this as a totally apologist stance on Thabeet, because I still would vastly prefer to be writing about Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, or Brandon Jennings starting and Mike Conley playing 6th man. But truly, depending on what stats you go by, Hasheem Thabeet is clearly valuable to this Grizzlies team.

Still, he will have to convince Coach Hollins that a single bone-headed play doesn’t mean that he needs to sit the rest of the game (what game doesn’t Marcus Williams make a stupid in) because — using, or in spite of, his size and athleticism — Hasheem Thabeet seems capable to contribute more than we’ve ever seen before.”

Grandad, reading your rebuttal just makes me think how sad it is to be a Hawks fan. We have an all-star ‘center’ because he is not an all-star ‘forward’. We are trying to figure a ’situation’ because the guy doesn’t want to play center. But does the guy want to be recognized as a ‘center’ because he gets all-star accolades and All-NBA votes? It is utter nonsense for Larry to give this guy his wish and keep him from defending anything with size and stature that makes him vulnerable.

We have 2 PFs that are best at PF and neither one of them is listed as such. It’s nonsense.
