Atlanta Hawks: Minicamp Day 1
7:09 pm June 27, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Notes and quotes from League (Pre) Lockout . . .

Lighty is a live one. (Phil Skinner / pskinner@ajc.com)
- Before you ask: I didn’t get to see much live action. Media types got to see about 15 minutes of scrimmage at the end of the morning practice. So please hold your “How did [overlooked gem] look?” questions.
- I didn’t get to see Keith Benson scrimmage at all. When practice was opened, he was with a group that was off lifting weights. He does indeed look thin.
- The Hawks won’t be able to sign any players out of this camp because they have no open roster spots after signing Magnum Rolle. Their free agents technically don’t become free agents until Friday, but we know why that’s not going to happen.
- Whenever the Hawks can sign players, it sounds as if they will make a run at David Lighty. The Hawks worked him out before the draft.
- L.D.: “Lighty is a gutsy defender. He can defend maybe three positions. That is what we are looking for as we move into next summer. I want guys that can defend where it’s already instilled in him, it’s in their DNA. Lighty has been a tremendous defender throughout his career and certainly he would be a plus to have on this team.”
- Lighty on defense: “That is something where you help separate yourself from others. Everybody wants to see somebody score but the little things are what win basketball games. I try to focus on that.”
- Lighty said the Cavaliers, Pistons, Suns, Spurs and Hornets also wanted to bring him in. Why the Hawks? “It was about [looking at] teams that I would like and fit my style of play,” he said. “They have open spots and they have free agents at the two guard.”
- Lighty said he was less upset about not being drafted than were his family, friends and supporters. “For me, I’m the type of person if I have a goal I am going to reach it no matter what and I’m not going to stop until I do. I was a little down; I’m human. That was my dream and my goal to get drafted. And hear my name called, that was the big thing. I will play in the NBA one day. I won’t stop until I get there.”
- L.D. echoed Rick Sund in saying the Hawks want to bring back Twin. They seem less certain about Damien. “We are still taking about it,” L.D. said. “We haven’t made any decisions there. We will see what happens.”
- L.D. said the Hawks have “got to put a little meat on [Benson's] bones.” Benson said he’s ready: “They have good weight coaches here so I can put a lot of focus on that and plan out my meals. My main focus will be to put weight and strength on.”
- Benson said he thinks he can maintain his athleticism with another 15 to 20 pounds on his frame.
- L.D. on Benson: “He’s a really good kid. We did a background check on him and he’s one of the quality kids at the collegiate level.”
- Benson plans to hook up with fellow Detroit Country Day alum C-Webb, who lives in town. “I have his number. I’m going to reach out.” Benson played under Webber’s brother, Jason, who is an assistant coach at DCD.
- Peachtree Ridge product Jason Graham also worked out for the Hawks before the draft. “Graham can really shoot the basketball,” Drew said. “I didn’t know about him but watching some film on him and working him out, he can make shots.”
- When the topic turned to Al playing more power forward, L.D., like Sund, started talking more about versatility as a virtue than adding a full-time center: “The more versatile we are, it keeps the other team guessing a little bit. We did move Al around a lot last year. We moved Josh around. Joe played some three. Having a verstaile team makes us more potent.
- The word from multiple NBA people over the last few days is there was nothing much to that Josh to Minnesota trade rumor on draft day.
- But David Aldridge reports (about halfway down the page) there was something to that SI.com story on the imminent sale of of the Hawks.

I’ve heard David Lighty’s name mentioned quite a few times on these blogs. I’m curious about him seeing as tho he might be brought in for defense.

Ken S,
If the Hawks sign Lighty, he will probably cut into Sy’s minutes.
That being said, I like what LD said.I want guys that can defend where it’s already instilled in him, it’s in their DNA..
However, last year, LD said lots of things, only to back pedal, or not follow through.

From last blog:
Marvin’s Grandma:
“Al is 20x better than josh, and when the Hawks decide to use Marvin, you all will find out that Marvin is better than Josh also!”
Career Season Stats:
Josh Smith: 14.6ppg, 33.8mpg, 46%FG%, 67% FT, 7.7rpg, 3.0apg, 1.2spg, 2.2bpg
Al Horford : 12.8ppg, 33.8mpg, 53%FG%, 76% FT, 9.6rpg, 2.4apg, 0.8spg, 1.1bpg
Career Playoff Stats
Josh Smith: 15.8ppg, 36.0mpg, 42%FG%, 69%FT, 8.0rpg, 2.6apg, 1.2spg, 2.0bpg
Al Horford : 11.5ppg, 35.5mpg, 46%FG%, 76%FT, 8.7 rpg, 2.7apg,0.6spg, 1.1bpg
No need to even put Marvin in the same discussion. That is disrespectful to Al and Josh. That sure does not look like one guy is 20x better than the other guy to me.
I will also note that over the same amount of years (4 years) in the playoffs, Josh Smith has 547 FT attempts, while Al Horford has 102 FT attempts. I wonder who is attacking the rim (LOL)? We all should know who the better defensive player is over their respective careers, unless you are just a Josh hater. I actually like both guys, but I do think that one should be moved, and my choice would be Al, especially if Teague is to be the point guard of the future. To whomever made the stupid comment concerning the highest paid players on the team, Horford was a higher ranked player than Josh coming out of college, he made more money on his rookie contract than Josh over the life of the contract, and he will make more money over the life of the second contract than Josh did on his.
Last point. Josh has been in the league 7 years, and Al has been in for 4 years. During the regular season over 7 years playing mostly power forward, and some small forward, Josh has amassed 1,189 blocks, while Al in 4 years has amassed 342 blocks. In the playoffs, when every point counts, and your PF and C should always protect the rim, over the same amount of years (4 years), Josh has amassed 81 blocks, and Horford has 44 blocks. Any idiot who states that blocked shots is not an important stat defensively, is just that, an idiot. Those are 81 shots in the playoffs, that had an oppurtunity to put points on the board, that were erased. But lets remember that Josh is the one who never hustles, or gets back on defense, and is a cancer to the team (LOL). Joe Johnson is actually that guy, but I’ll defer on that argument.

I didn’t see a ton of college basketball this year, but I did see a few OSU games, and although Lighty played on a team with several other quality players and never really had to be the first option on his team, I think he could contribute.
I don’t know if I’d sign him at the expense of not having Damien on the roster though.
Assuming Jamal leaves, there are five players under contract that I am confident will give the Hawks quality minutes every time out: Teague, Joe, Kirk, Smoove, and Al. Beyond them, you have Marvin and Zaza under contract who, on any given day, may give you good minutes or be useless, and you have free agents Collins and Damien who can provide quality minutes in the right situation. If you let Hilton, Etan, and Powell walk, and keep Collins, Damien, Rolle (whose contract is non-guaranteed), and Sy and add Benson, that’s 12 players on the roster which leaves 3 spots empty.
At that point, you would have:
PG: Teague/Kirk
SG: Joe/Kirk/Sy
SF: Smoove/Marvin/Damien/Sy
PF: Al/Smoove/Benson/Rolle
C: Al/Zaza/Collins/Benson/Rolle
I think that team still needs a center who is better than Zaza and good enough to start first and foremost, a fourth player in the guard rotation, and someone better than Marvin to be the best true small forward on the roster.
I could see Lighty or someone else in this free agent camp being that 4th guard… maybe. They still need to find a starting caliber center (Dalembert in free agency? A Marvin for Haywood trade?) and a small forward who can at least push Marvin for a starting job (Josh Howard? T-Mac? Caron Butler?) I don’t think either of those roles is going to be filled by someone in this free agent camp.

That would be me.
Josh didn’t go to college as you know, so of course he wasn’t rated as high. He wasn’t a phenom like Dwight or anything.
The fact remains that Josh made twice as much as Al this season, and will make more than Al the next 2 seasons before he becomes a FA. And inflation adjusted, Josh’s 2nd contract is worth more than the one Al just signed.
It’s just stupid to try and spin it to say Josh somehow hasn’t made more than Al. He has, and he will.
So I expect more out of the guy I pay the most.
So Rod, since Miami didn’t have a guy in the top 15 in blocked shots, and Dallas didn’t have a guy in the top 15 in blocked shots, and both those teams were in the Finals, it looks like your the idiot on this one.

SteveW,
“The fact remains that Josh made twice as much as Al this season, and will make more than Al the next 2 seasons before he becomes a FA. And inflation adjusted, Josh’s 2nd contract is worth more than the one Al just signed.”
Actually did not realize that that was you who made that statement, but if you did, and you still believe it, you are an idiot. 60million > 58million any day of the week. Math was my worst subject, but even I know that 60 million is greater than 58 million over 5 years. Inflation adjusted blah blah blah. Josh only got 58 based on the fact that Memphis gave him that offer, not us. We matched. We originally offered 45 mil over 5 years, and made Josh get another offer. We did no such thing with Al. So in reality, the Hawks thought Josh was worth 45 mil over 5 years, and thought Al is worth 60mil over 5 years. Now you look at the numbers I posted above, and tell me if Al is worth 15 million more than Josh. The Hawks were forced into giving Josh 58 million.
“Atlanta originally offered Smith a five-year, $45 million contract last October that he declined.
The Grizzlies’ offer isn’t frontloaded or laced with creative clauses designed to discourage the Hawks, meaning it is a straightforward five-year, $58 million deal.”
“The All-Star center and the Hawks have reached terms on a five-year extension worth $60 million plus performance bonuses, mirroring the extension Joakim Noah signed with Chicago earlier this month.”

“They seem less certain about Damien. “We are still taking about it,” L.D. said. “We haven’t made any decisions there. We will see what happens.”
That’s Interesting; so, Damien is not a lock to re-sign. If you hear a statement like this from management in Corporate America these days, it’s a wrap, you’re about to be fired. (Sorry Damien)

While I have read and respect most of your post, I really am not interested in most of these guys except Benson. Most won’t make the team, and if they do they will fill the Josh Powell, Etan Thomas roles on this team, which means all we will see of them is their fashion sense. No interest of mine.

OBRIEN-I seriously doubt that LDrew is as stubborn and mule headed as Woodson. I think he got the message when Sund and the ASG decided to change the teams approach from OFF first to DEF by paying a ransom to get rid of MBibby. I’m certain he also knows Jamal won’t be resigned. You’re probably right about Papa Sy, but whoever gets the mins, Drew will have to deal with a backcourt that’s definitely DEF oriented.
Signing Lighty will probably mean DWilkins won’t be resigned, since we’d have a 4 guard rotation of JJ, Teague, Hinrich, Pape Sy and Lighty without him. When you take into consideration the number of SF’s we have in camp, it appears we’re looking for a backup for Marvin, assuming JJ remains at SG.
It will be very interesting to see the battle that will be taking place in LDrew’s mind concerning whether JTeague or KHinrich gets the starting nod. While Hinrich definitely has the edge in experience and outside shooting, Teague has the edge in speed, quickness, athleticism, penetrating ability and potential impact.
Since Teague is the long term solution at PG rather than Hinrich, Drew definitely needs to start Teague and let Hinrich provide the veteran leadership and stability off the bench. Teague is much better equipped than Hinrich to consistently get this team off to a fast start, which was a constant problem last yr.
Man, I’m really excited about the speed, quickness, athleticism, size, and DEF ability of the players that will comprise our backcourt. I can’t wait to see how much of an impact they’ll have on our overall DEF. Even though I haven’t seen it posted since Bibby’s arrival, we all know he and Jamal gave up a lot of PTs with their poor DEF, which obviously had a negative impact on our DEF pts allowed.
After coming to the Hawks at the trade deadline, Bibby’s poor DEF caused our DEF pts allowed to increase by 9PPG. His OFF also caused a 9PPG increase as well. We all saw his OFF and DEF dramatically decline, which had an even higher negative impact on our DEF pts allowed and PPG scored. Those will not be issues this yr, with both DEF liabilities gone.

Most of the time, everyone on this blog is critisizing the Hawks players, Larry Drew, Rick Sund, or ASG. Well, recently you have to give them alot of credit for how they are running the Hawks. The Hawks made a surprisingly good run this season in the playoffs with Larry Drew as the coach. Rick Sund made a good trade to get Hinrich. Rick Sund and staff made a great pick @ #48 to get Keith Benson. Rick Sund and staff have assembled a great group of FA for this mini camp, that they are hosting, before the CBA runs out this Friday. Most teams were not “on the ball” enough to put that together the next week after the draft.
I believe giving credit where credit is due!

You have to love Lighty’s attitude. Just the type of guy we need. Good to read Benson will reach out to C-Webb. I think at least two guys from camp make the team. I dont think Wilkens, Powell, Armstrong, or Etan comes back. Might be a lot of young guys sitting at the end of the bench rather than washed up vets.

Najeh – I know. It was just a teaser argument based on the Al was an All Star, so he should out perform Josh line of reasoning. I tried to deal with that fallacy another way, but to know avail.
At this point, I say give them all a shot. Don’t trade anybody. We still don’t know what JJ, Teague, Josh or Al would like with a real Coach.
If we were to get an Adelman, or a Brown or Casey before they were snapped up, we may be surprised by the results.
LD just never seemed to like Wilkens for some reason. Even when Wilkens would outplay Mo’, it was always Mo’, just like Bibby.

Cut into Sy’s minutes? I don’t think Sy has any minutes. I think ZaZa, Teague, Hinrich, JJ, Marvin, Josh, and Al have minutes, and sometimes Collins.
I think the rest are yet to shake out. But I wouldn’t count on Sy having any minutes yet. This is the same Coach who wouldn’t give Jordan Crawford minutes under almost any circumstance, regardless of injuries to other players, blowouts or what have you.
Teague will only have minutes because Hinrich and JJ can’t play 48 mpg. And he won’t have minutes if we re-sign Jamal.

I predict that maybe, just maybe the NBA Owners and Player’s Union will vote to extend the lockout deadline by two weeks in an attempt to stave off a work stoppage and reach an unlikely agreement.
What a two week extension will allow is teams to release players and sign free agents, in addition to an unlikely agreement. Before anyone retorts, ” That ain’t gonna happen?”
Well, it happened in The NFL at the beginning of this current lock out. However, before Stern and the owners agree, it must be perceived as good-faith and not a muse/manipulation.
In short, if all parties agree to a two week extension, there could be a flurry of players released and signed.
Just a thought.

That’s a cop – out! Any deals signed under an extension will be grandfathered under the current CBA. I’m not talking about blockbuster deals or max contracts … I’m a reasonable woman.
I’m looking at: veteran minimums, MLE and TPE’s. Not only that, there will be an amnesty clause (it’s plausible), or rules exceptions to transition the old contracts and allow the new rules to mesh into one another over a 3 to 5 year grace period.
I’m just hoping.

as for minicamp day 1, i like what i hear from david lighty. some people advocated for him to be picked at #48, and as luck would have it we would be able to draft a project center(im glad his biggest critique is lack of weight) and maybe be able to sign lighty as a FA anyway. Lighty liked our style of play? ha! if lighty is our gritty defender than we dont need to bring damien back. its nice to see a wilkins in a hawks jersey but he is going to be 31 in a few months and we mine as well insert a determined rookie instead who can play with that same defensive fire and possibly give us some offense/potential as well.

Honestly, Rod since I didn’t follow college basketball that closely during the regular season, I can somewhat relate to your comment. But since it is the off-season following a draft in which the Hawks only had the 48th 2nd-round pick and now holding a mini-camp to salvage a questionable Hinrich trade, this event is what it is. Any pickups from this camp essentially becomes our 2011 draft picks; having said that though; there is another drama here to keep me interested. For me, the focus is more about LD and his plans to re-tool and his maturation as a decent HC. This clearly puts the spotlight on both him and Sund. These invitees just happen to be a peripheral part of that process. It is your typical NBA draft experience followed by future expectation more so than past events.
Will any of the selected invitees get meaningful PT? Probably not (for awhile), but again, it is what it is

Ages of signed players for next season:
Hinrich 30/31
JJ 30
ZaZa 27/28
Josh 25/26
Magnum 25/26
Al 25
Marvin 25
Sy 23/24
Teague 23
Benson 23 (I know he’s not signed, assuming he will be)
That’s 10 guys. Our oldest guy under contract will turn 31 during the middle of next season. 2 of our 3 best players will still only be 25 when the season starts in Al and Josh.
Even if we re-sign Collins, who will turn 33 in December, we are not an old team. Still kind of young actually.
6 of our 10 signed players or draft pick will be 25 or younger when the season starts.
I say we have a long way to go before we reach our ceiling.
Look at Dallas this season. They’ve been flailing since ‘06, and then win with a bunch of old guys leading the way.
The Lakers and the Celtics look ancient compared to us. Even Chicago looks older. Bogans and Korver are in their 30’s, and Boozer will turn 30 Nov. 20th. Noah,

Benson went to college at 6′9 and 190 and left at 6′11 224. He was putting on weight, but in college you can’t just focus on basketball. The weight and conditioning coaches are different at the college ranks than they are at the pro ranks where that is their primary focus. He can now worry only about his job which is playing basketball.

I think that’s kind of unfair to say about Marvin. If we are to say that Josh and Al would improve under a more expirenced coach, whose to say Marvin wouldn’t.
And vice versa,
If only Marvin can make Marvin better……then why can’t Josh and Al make Josh and Al better?

Marvin would likely have benefited from better coaching the same way Smoove and Al would. But at the same time, Smoove and Al have noticeably improved their games independent of coaching over the course of their careers while Marvin, aside from improving his shooting range after his third season, is pretty much the same player he was in 2005 when he got drafted.

Sale of Hawks looking legit
The story concerning the imminent sale of the Hawks by SI.com last week is pretty much on the money, the team’s denials to the contrary. The sale is close to being completed, though it won’t be finalized in time for an approval vote by the Board of Governors at its meeting Tuesday in Dallas. There is a single, and up to now, anonymous buyer, according to a source. The amount? I’m told it’s in the neighborhood of $300 million, including debt on the team. The team’s current ownership group, Atlanta Spirit, is expected to remain on in a minority ownership capacity, according to the source, who’s been briefed on the terms of the pending transfer.
Another group led by the founders of the Outback Steakhouse chain in Florida also put in a bid on the team, according to a source, though it’s unclear how much they put up or if they were ever seriously considered …
You know, every time David Aldridge says something, it’s legit. Therefore, I believe this report is true. And I’m damn glad to see it.

Not sure why it is that Sund and Co. have to think about whether or not to keep Damien Wilkens around. Do they have another SG/SF who can defend that well, that can also hit a shot or two and doesn’t hurt you when he’s in the game (while also not complaining about minutes)?

NBA – Pro Basketball: Horford to adjust his game, position next?
Posted: Sun, Jun 26, 11 – 8:11:07 PM EDT

Al Horford Credit: Getty Images
Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Al Horford is a huge man just about everywhere other than his current place of employment. [When] Horford returns to the court to play center for the Hawks, he’s considered undersized for his position. For the second consecutive offseason, an emerging storyline is if the Hawks will add a full-time center so Horford can permanently slide to his preferred power forward position. But the bigger question might be if Horford will figure larger in Atlanta’s offense in 2011-12. Horford was by far the team’s most efficient scorer last season but ranked just fourth in field-goal attempts per game. “It will be interesting because I’ve always been very team-oriented,” Horford said at his camp. “If coach [Larry Drew] comes and tells me, ‘Listen, I want you to develop more [in isolation] and I want you to create plays,’ I could adjust my game to that.”

I sincerelly don’t understand why this continued criticism of JJ after these year’s playoffs.
The guy showed up, on both ends of the court. Was just a notch under his averages and was fundamental on all wins we got.
If someone was a major disappointment during the playoffs, that guy was Diaper Al who was exposed as a one dimensional offensive player which has no balls and shies away from the contact that playoff basketball implies.
If you were thinking that JJ by signing a 100+ million contract would suddenly morph into Kobe or Wade, think again. He was never that type of player, but he still is a heck of a player ON BOTH ENDS of the floor.
Good grief… We went into the playoffs with a perimeter oriented offense, guided by LD who was thoroughly out coached, Diaper Al doesn’t show up (with the exception of garbage rebounding), Jamal disappears after game 1 of the CHI series and JJ gets the flak??
JJ, Teague, Josh and Zaza kept us afloat and competitive against CHI.

The Hawks can probably get Haywood for Marvin. No need to give up Al.
If future salary flexibility is not a concern, Marvin for Haywood makes a lot of sense for the Hawks — and really for the Mavs too, since it saves them money long term and gives them a replacement small forward in case Caron Butler leaves. The only problem is that Haywood has a ton of years and money left on his deal, and as long as the DASG owns the team that probably means they either won’t consent to the trade or will dump some other salary to accommodate Haywood.

Haywood will be 32 in November and you should all be aware that he is an old 32 since he is known for his work ethic and for taking care of his body.
He is the impersonation of the word “overrated”.
He hardly played in the finals (due to injury) and the Mavs hardly felt his absence. Cardinal was 10 times more valuable for them than Haywood would have been if he was available.
To dump Marvin’s bad contract and get an even worse? Good grief, no thanks.

Philips’ 43-night problem: lots of dates to fill, too much competition
Print
E-mail
.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Downtown Atlanta is no longer the region’s only place for major event space and that logistical fact will make it more challenging to fill the 43 days suddenly available at Philips Arena because of the departure of the Atlanta Thrashers.
“Williams said the facility will target concerts, family shows, rodeos, figure skating shows, gymnastics meets, bull riding, multi-day events and big name sports contests like the NCAA basketball tournament. He’ll also be able to place the Atlanta Hawks in some of the Thrashers’ weekend dates, which attract bigger crowds.”
“Still Conlon said Philips will have challenges because there is no one easy answer. They may pick up a few concerts that would have passed them by, had the Thrashers still be tenants. But in the prevailing market conditions, this doesn’t mean a flood of business either”
____________________________
Just a few key excerpts from an interesting article posted this morning. I posted very similar comments immediately after the Thrashers sale. I believe it was KevinM or SteveW? That chimed in as well.
This is of interest to me because, if the Arena is blacked out for the remaining 324 days of the year, (The Dream making money is a …. well, A Dream) Then such a loss in revenue will bleed money and impact the business of the Hawks.
There is no way around that. When you look at the socioeconomics of the world today, disposable income and near 10% unemployment along with similar NBA team markets?
Atlanta Spirit Group has benefited from the Thrashers revenues, not just inside the Arena, but restaurants, hotels, public transportation and arena jobs opportunities. I know that ASKG had reported 20M in losses from funding the Thrashers, but do we really believe these LIARS? They lost 20M solely because they were in over their collective heads and never had a CLUE how to run ONE sports franchise on a competitive level – let alone TWO!
Good Bye ASKG! Your work here is DONE!

And speaking of my prediction that, Stern, the owners and the players will agree to a two week extension beyond June 30 to stave off a lockout and try to reach an unlikely agreement?
I levied that prediction with the fact that The NFL did that prior to their current lock out. I failed to mention that the Phoenix Suns and Vince carter extended their decision for what, 2 months? Before deciding if Phoenix will exercise their team option to retain Vince @ 15M or simply offer him a buyout @ 4M.
The reference to Vince Carter offers a very reasonable example to my theory that: good faith negotiations is not a necessary component to extending the current CBA agreement.
Here’s my point: teams can begin to release unwanted FAs and sign bench players with their veteran minimum, TPEs and MLE contract options. I doubt if any prudent GM would forge any blockbuster trades or max – contracts until the new CBA is in place.
The Hawks GM can release: Powell, Armstrong and Thomas, then look at the camp players or other FA’s aggressively before they end up at the Dollar Tree sifting through the bottom of that bargain bin again.
Aye Sund! For the love of basketball, buy a computer and go get your man! Don’t wait around – Just in case their is an extension to this lock out. Be prepared for any and all possibilities.

With the team up for sale, there’s no way anyone will be traded before the team is sold. I’m not certain a new owner would be willing to approve the trade of a valuable asset like JSmith, AHorford or JJohnson so close to training camp, and with the CBA expiring. I think all of these trade rumors were smoke screens to keep TRADE FANATICS excited and tuned in during the off season.
Unless JTeague simply blows everyone away during training camp and preseason, LDrew will start KHinrich, along with SG-JJohnson, SF-MWilliams, C-AHorford & PF-JSmith. I believe LDrew, like his predessor MWoodson, still has visions of a guard dominated, jumpshooting, half court oriented OFF team.
And since Hinrich is more efficient in a half court style OFF than running fastbreaks, and has superior jumpshooting ability, he’ll become LDrew’s new version of MBibby, which should also please JJohnson.

Ken Strickland,
I don’t think JJ is on the “Hinrich as a starter” bandwagon.
JJ was very vocal in support of Teague and both meshed well during the CHI series making our back court more dynamic and more diversified in the way they played.
In theory, JJ needs another guard who is a sharp shooter to which he can kick out after a failed ISO but with Teague on the floor we will see teams having to defend the Hawks differently since Teague can carve those defenses and make some serious damage and JJ knows that.
Teague – Hinrich – JJ can make a very very potent 3 man rotation on the back court.
vava74
June 28th, 2011

And, honestly, if Hinrich gets 30 minutes per game backing both Teague and JJ, I am sure he will be happy.
There are 96 back court minutes. Divide that for 3 and you see 3 guys happy.

Its fools gold to think that all of a sudden the guards are going to be able to carry the team for the whole season with or without JC1.In this league you need quality bigs too shoulder some of the burden..Time and again we saw none of the bigs except for brief moments in crunch time step up and make an impact.
You lose to Charlotte by 33 points? Huh?

Here’s yet another example of a poorly thought out suggestion which was motivated by a very low basketball IQ combined with a dislike for all things Horford. If we traded AHorford for LAldridge, who is a very good player,
1-Who plays center, since LAldridge is a PF?
2-What do we do with current PF JSmith?
3-How can Aldridge improve our team over Horford when he doesn’t rebound as well, which is an issue with us, or do anything better than Horford other than score?
4-If you think Horford is soft, have you seen Aldridge play?
5-If you think Horford relies too much on shooting jumpshots and doesn’t have a good postup gm, have you seen Aldridge play?

It is possible that Marvin would improve under a different coach. But did woody and LD cause him to regress?
Does (lack of) coaching make you miss open shots (unlike Josh, Marvin is a True SF and has a good stroke), does (lack of) coaching make you disappear, does (lack of) coaching make you fumble and stumble, does (lack of) coaching make u unable to take advantage of mismatches?
I think Josh would benefit the most from a new coach because he didn’t have a college coach, but he and Al have improved mostly on their own, whereas I think Marvin regressed mostly on his own.

Allstar Al has a low turnover rate than Josh because he is not a facilitator. He cant create his own shot. He is a receiver with no creativity. He does one of two things with the ball. Shoot his midrange set shot or he passes the ball back out to Josh 80% of the time…With that style of play it is expected that he should have a lower turnover ratio……No surprises there….

Wish they could keep two of those players. They really need a guard like Lighty or Wanamaker who’s a good defender and can play more than one position. Right now Pape Sy is the 4th guard and there’s no 5th, so that’s scary. Sy has big upside, tho.

We don’need to trade anyone…..
We need to redefine our Teams philosophy(Defense 1st), redefine players roles(defensive specialist, shooter and STAR). and develop a bench
Great coaches defeine their players role and how role that helps the team win. Simplify the game, BE GREAT AT ONE THING AND DO THAT THING WHENEVER YOU ARE ON THE COURT.
Woodson did not define the roles of his players, he let them set their own perameters and we had too many players trying to be what they are not.(Marvin trying to take people off the dribble…Josh trying too shoot)
I like what I am seeing from LD and Sund….I am a little optimistic.

JJ, Teague, Josh and Zaza kept us afloat and competitive against CHI.”
@vava74, Yes Al proved hes not an ALLSTAR by his performance in the big games.
Garbage time does not impress us……
ALL NBA AL was not a disappointment because he’s done this before in the playoffs and regular season..You cant count on him to impact a game week in and week out. His limited skills wont allow him too.. I only remember two games, Clippers and Chicago were he played a major role in a win. He’s delusional if he thinks he can play the 4 on a nightly basis and contribute in a meaningful way..
Does he not remember 6′6 Chuck Hayes dismantling in Houston this past season? That will become more common in his 6th season at the 4 spot….
All NBA Al= Pretty Boy…I think WWClyde came up with that one….LOL!

KenS, your lineup is what will be given to Atlanta fans, whenever the season starts that is.
Larry will not sit Kirk until it is proven he stops igniting the offense. What we will have is 2 jump shooters in Joe and Kirk, neither how drive to the basket, and Josh on the wings. More of the same from last year.
DMB, I know you are salivating at the potential of Gearon and Levenson and their croonies being relegated to cheerleaders, which is still too good for them. They should never be allowed to re-enter Philips Arena.
Check with your sources and let us know if you see Joe and Kirk working on their jumpers, Collins and Zaza in boxing class to prep for DHoward, and see if Marvin has gotten off his backplane yet to start improving his core.
I agree with Ken, no changes, if any, are upcoming. The change in ownership doesn’t bode well at this juncture. Our ‘talent’ is just getting older while we dabble and ‘experiment’ with different combinations that Larry says will be hard to match up with…..okay….
Our roster will look like the corporate CEOs (the 3 captains) and the minimum wage class who fill limited roles and are brought in here to provide fouls and roster slots.
Someone mentioned Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. Never will this GM of ours bring in guys who will threaten the mix of the roster. Sund is all smoke and mirrors instead of applying long term solutions.
I go on the record by saying we will never advance with our current 3 captain core and where they are playing on the court.
Earlier today, I was reading about how Felton seems to come to camp not exactly in shape and it reminded me how we see Marvin’s game not exactly getting better as summers go by. I gotta think Marvin has the same type of mindset not being ready on Day 1. I think the injuries has continued to change his thinking to simply being a jump shooter.
And 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the hiring of one Billy Knight.
I still see a large portion of the dream that Billy Knight came in with:
Joe / Josh / Al / Marvin / that 5th starter that makes this team interchangeable. I recall his thought of “why does someone have to be a 1 or a 3?” It still sounds ignorant to this day. Without the potential of Jeff Teague, where in the hail would this fan base be?
It took Knight 4 years to admit we might need a PG, so he signs Speedy, the understudy to Chris Paul. You had to have a feeling that wasn’t going to go well.
Ah yes, memory lane with Billy Knight….5 years at the GM was enough for him to move on…can we get less than 5 with Sund?

It was not a bad pick,
Marvin has regressed due to COACHING…He has proved that he can be a 15ppg scorer on a playoff team.
I don’t expect Marvin to score 15 ppg because he was the 5th option. What I expect from him was to knock down open shots, rebound the ball better, and dominate in the post when guys like Luke Ridnour are guarding him. But he didnt.
In the playoffs just concluded, Josh averaged 9 rebounds per game in 37 mpg, and he played alot of SF. In 18 mpg, Marvin averaged 2 rebounds per game. How is that coaching?
And I will continue to use the Bruce Bowen example. On a Spurs team with Tim Duncan, Manu, and Tony Parker, Bruce was not a part of the offense, and he only averaged 6 pts and 3 rebs for his career.
However, he played lock down defense, and he consistently knocked down the 3 from the wing to help the Spurs win their titles.
So it’s not about scoring 15 ppg. Its about making IMPACT plays. And Marvin does not make enough of them.

Just trade josh, so all of the heaters can see how terrible this team will be without him, and how Al will disappear once again in the playoffs. LMA is a 20/10 pf/c who didn’t get an AS selection and he played a lot of center. Dude has a way better post game than Al, same kind of mid range, and more aggressive. Al won’t even sniff an AS appearance once he starts at pf. Especially if he is the go to guy..

As for Billy Knight, what does it say about the ASG that they hired him, and even offered him a 1 year extension (that he turned down)?
Then again, this is the same ASG that hired Don Waddell to run the Thrashers, and he was worse than BK. After years of failed draft picks, coaching hires etc, they finally reassigned Don to another position.
If the ASG made better decisions, the Thrashers might still have been in ATL today.

I would trade him to Toronto for Leandro Barbosa. They’re not happy with Linas Klezia so They will bite. We could probably get Jerryd Bayless back as well if we wanted. That way we could Ship old man Kirk and his 9 million dollar expiring deal out for a Big.
Then Sign Tayshaun Prince and Al Thorton to revamp our SF spot. Barbosa Replaces Jamals production. Besides, Barbosa likes to attack the rack and draw fouls.

I guess one of the things I struggle with on this whole “hate on Al” deal is perspective. Al was hurt going into the playoffs, didn’t complain, but it kinda slowed him down, ankle and back.
Then it just seemed like LD was leaving him in the game to much, except that game he did the stupid 2 foul rule on him.
Now Al’s not a flashy player, but solid. He takes on 75% of the Centers in this League, and normally does a fine job against them, but there are exceptions.
But Al is kinda slow. Al is not a good shot blocker. Al went to the perimeter way to much this season. Al quit banging so much in the post. Al needs to bulk up some, but keep working on his agility as well.
But I’ve never looked at Al as some superstar or something. I’ve always just looked at him as an above average player who is not flashy. Who happened to be the 3rd best Center in the League this past season. Not because he’s great, just alot of decent, but not great Centers in the League right now. Dude is solid, rarely complains, makes good decisions, good passer (where he improved immensely I might add this past season).
It’s just that he made the All Star team that seems to freak some of ya’ll out. And the constant comparisons to Josh. He’s the anti-Josh so to speak. No flash, no oohs’ and aaah’s, but just solid.
And I still think they can both play on the court together and complement each other. And both seem to still be improving.
I just don’t get the “let’s hate on Al and defend Josh” bandwagon. Can’t we just say that both of them have strength’s and weakness’s, and it’s great to have a good frontcourt, and we hope they both do the things necessary this off season to help in the post, rebounding, toughness etc.?

Booo! I think Barea is too short to start in the League on a consistent basis. He will get posted up too much. But he is a great spark off the bench. 20-25 + mpg a game.
But Kirk can play the 1 or 2, so with Teague, who I really see only being a 1, we need Kirk more than Barea.
But in my ideal scenario, we have Barea backing up Teague, and Kirk backing up JJ, with JJ playing some 3 also to make the minutes work.
Barea would fit great on the Hawks.

About Jamal – my take has been on Pokhorev from the Nets, or the Knicks, or maybe even Chicago to offer Jamal 5 years 45 million, even with the new CBA.
He and Jason Richardson picked a very good year to be Free Agents in my opinion. Bad because of the CBA, but good because they’re the best SG’s available, and some teams will probably be willing to overpay for them.

Gotta go thru this again, who do we have coming back next season?
ZaZa, Sy (probably), Rolle (probably), JJ, Al, Josh, Teague, Hinrich, Marvin, Benson (probably).
That’s 10, and I think you put Collins in that group, that would be 11 if he re-signed
So if we don’t re-sign Wilkens, or another FA or 2, I guess we could feasibly keep 4 of these guys.
If we do re-sign Collins,we would have 8 guys with experience, and the rest would be hungry DLeaguer types, unless we signed some vets.
Interesting. I wonder if LD would play them?
And Grant Hill, T Prince, or Battier would be great additions to this team also.
And I like the Aaron Gray suggestion somebody had.

Two horrific GMs (BK & Sund). Two abysmal head coaches. An ownership group that is nothing short of vile. A flawed roster featuring one of the worse contracts in recent history. A small & soft center who refuses to play the position. A defiant and frustrating hometown player. A former #2 pick who is unworthy to wear an NBA logo.
And yet, a top 8 finisher in the past 3 years. So is it that all of those others teams are truly that awful or could it possibly, maybe, perhaps be that we simply have become the type of fans who complain about everything despite being better off than most fan bases? In my house, we call that “brat behavior”.

@slimjr 11:21am post-
i think if we rid josh or al, its gota be al. al is very good but he really does nothing during the playoffs for us. he cant score downlow and his offense is evolved into 15 ft jumpers which is nice but he cant get that shot off during the playoffs. there are a few deals that come to mind we could maybe do dealing al, maybe by the deadline in feb if we are flailing around .500
deal joe/al/marv to orl for gilbert/dwight/qrich, orl might not gettin someone more promising “in their eyes” than al, joe is a big bonus over gilbert and we can give orl a future 1st as well. my second thought would be al and marv for monta ellis and andres biendrins. we need offense since jamal will not be resigning and al doesnt really provide much scoring. here is a look at the hawks 2011 playoff loses and what al contributed during them.
game 2 vs orl/ 10pts 10rbs
game 5 vs orl/ 9pts 14rbs
game 2 vs chi/ 6pts 14rbs
game 3 vs chi/ 10pts 8rbs
game 5 vs chi/ 12pts 10rbs
game 6 vs chi/ 7 pts 4rbs
i think if we plug in a above average player into our C that we’d get about the same production. for some people to say al is our best player i just dont see it. i think monta would give us a huge offensive boost and if ld wants a 3 guard halfcourt offense idk how anyone stops teague ellis and johnson with hinrich off the bench.

Someone must really have a boring life, and/or difficulty coming up with an intelligent response, if all they can come up with is former GM Billy Knight and who he drafted or coulda shoulda drafted. When the season starts, all of you TRADE FANATICS will be greatly disappointed. The only changes that will be made to this yrs version of the Hawks will be to strengthen the bench.
Talent wise, this is a much better team than last yrs regular season record would indicate. There’s no way we would have eliminated Orlando, or won a gm against Chicago, with Bibby instead of Hinrich. We all witnessed the impact Hinrich had on the team in the 1st rd against Orlando. We all also witnessed the impact Teague had on the team in the 2nd rd against Chicago.
I’m excited about seeing how much more of an impact having both players will have on the team. However, when a negative minded critic claims the teams center, who led the team in rebounding, was the cause of the teams rebounding problems against Chicago, and claims he isn’t a facilitator, although he tied for the team lead in assists, it demonstrates an extremely low basketball IQ, as well as a low level of common sense and/or cognizant reasoning ability.

We should just cut Rolle since we have Benson now and not sign Collins until Aaron Gray is off the market on another team. With that said, Sund & Drew need to come to a conclusion on keeping a lot of these guys.
Lighty & McCamey should be obvious choices. McCamey makes Hinrich expendable enough to package with a.)Marvin for a perimeter shooting wing or b.) Zaza for an upgrade at center maybe.
Malcolm Thomas can give us a nice energy big like Taj Gibson, who can rebound, block shots, and other intangibles.
Samhan can easily become our best interior presence and may start and allow Horford to play the 4. The guy was a beast in college despite having no quickness nor hops..
Joe Alexander could provide a spark off the bench and start at 3 in small lineup. Very explosive and athletic guy. May can revive his career.
Zachs Graham would get the last spot to give us perimeter shooting if didn’t keep Sy.
1- Hinrich/Teague/McCamey
2- Joe/Lighty/Sy
3- Josh/Alexander/Marvin
4- Horford/Benson/Thomas
5- Samhan/Gray/Zaza
Teague needs one more year of mentoring and would probably perform better as the change of pace guard in a small lineup with Lighty, Alexander, Josh, & Horford. Samhan & Gray can alternate starts. Zaza & Marvin could possibly land us some perimeter shooting in a trade. I like Casspi for Zaza in a trade. Marvin may can be dumped for 2nds..

June 28th, 2011
4:15 pm
Najeh I don’t understand your depth chart? The past 17 years the title contenders have allowed 102 points or less.
The only player with that on the roster for the past 2 seasons is Josh Smith and he only plays 36 minutes a game.
and you put Smith starting @ 2 positions, I know he gets a lot of the blame around here but looking at that “depth chart” its easy to understand why.
Smith is our only all around defender and getting fatter Johnson slows the pace to 107 points per 100 possessions and Hinrich is old and gets injured on a routine play.
Hawks would be nothing without Josh. Horford is the next best defender and he allows 105 points per 100 possessions.
In the playoffs Smith stepped his game up defensively and was @ 100. And you guys wonder why everyone laughs at us.
You guys expect Al to play 96 minutes each? No u fully expect to lean on Josh and start Marvin not @ the 2 but the 3 once again
Load of bullsh**. Hawks should have had 2 championships in the past 4 playoffs by now. Sign and Trade Childress no.
Iguodala/Chris Paul, Josh Smith should have been the core. Joe Johnson has been holding this franchise’s SG defense hostage for year
Al is not an All Star reserve next year. Al is a great player but not a foundation piece. Lazadasical Lamar Odom created more wins than Al last year.
Al has peaked. 180 free throw attempts? At best he is Brad Miller w/o the ability to space the floor as well.

Big mistake. 5th guard???
Dwyane Wade rebound 10.2%
Marvin Williams 10.1%
Paul Pierce 9.5%
Jeff Teague 6.4%
Joe Johnson 6.4%
Mike Bibby 5%
Kirk Hinrich 4.7%
now I’m not a gambling man but I’d say Dwyane Wade is laughing his @ss off if the Hawks sign another guard.
You can’t get the ball you can’t win the game.
Sign Malcolm Thomas Sund. A post up 3 with a jumper. Richard Jefferson – Malcolm Thomas comparison is best.

Come on man enough of that insulting the team.
Joe Johnson accounted for 2.5 offensive wins and 1.8 defensive wins last regular season.
That’s 4 games. Marvin won 4.3 and missed 17 games.
Joe was below average and played 2600 subpar minutes. Playoffs give us hope he can still be a second option next to Teague
But Josh cannot be the best/only defender on this team anymore. We’re stuck with the guards and we need to overhaul the bigs.

astro, this is only a continuation of the dialogue heard during the season. dont kid yourself into thinking what was said during the season was any more rational than what is said now for the most part. luck got the hawks where they are now, not skill marked by the draft that got us al to fall in our laps. certain decisions might have made the ride less bumpy and a bit quicker as well but i am sure you havent forgotten the days of anakin joe either as the hawks somehow found their way.
just because you have come to your senses doesnt mean it is time for everyone else to stop having their fun either.
i said all season enjoy the rewards as the team seemed to be wanting to do something special in spite of its dithering idiot owners, gm’s and coaches and they almost did.
i was very satisfied with their performance this year and very defeated during the season of 53 wins which could have been a great year if coached differently. not many coaches get caught with their pants down to actually lose a game because they were on the court as woody did. it was just the most glaring fault of his that year. last year with all they were under and overcoming, including a new rookie coach and new “system”, they went much further than i thought they would, so, i commend them as players. the askg still gets an f for no other reason as to their continued lies about the thrashers and their intent all along. it wasnt much better for the hawks either we will find out when the dust settles is my guess.
until the cba is done and maybe a new owner then i remain quiet as to what can be done. personally as we both wanted action last year, this year i hope we get status quo and a quick hook if things falter and a look at getting rick adelman for the next 5 years.

Grandad,
Do you feel that right now the Hawks right now at this point in time are in the same position the late 80’s hawks were in when they lost in seven games to the celtics?Even though the Hawks lost in 6 i felt as if it was a 7 game series because they had chances.to win this series. Interestingly enough, the records of the Hawks after losing that series against boston were the following:
52-30 Lost First Round (Milwaukee) 3-2
41-41 DIdnt make playoffs
43-39 Lost First Round (Detroit) 3-2
38-44 Didnt Make Playoffs
43-39 Lost in First Round Chicago 3-0
Sports have shown you only get so many opportunities to make it to the Finals and win. The Hawks are really not that far away. Think about it a break here or there but I think a factor is in part LD coaching.
The focus will have to be defense for the team to go forward and LD will have to improve on that.
Also I am a Hawks fan and enjoy the team. I follow the team since Eddie Johnson and I think Steve W brought this up stating it seems more now it is this player vs that player instead of the team problem. I admit sometimes I get caught in it but I stated to myself any negative issues in regards to the teams success or failure I will address it on a team basis and then be specific with some players in their success or failure or if coaching was the culprit.
I give credit because northclyde always mentions this in regards to Joe Johnson. Some fans want hm to play both ways. If he doesnt take enought shots he is not aggressive and if he takes a lot of shots he is being selfish.
Your thoughts and what do you see going forward for the Hawks positive or negative?

“Joe was below average ”
The sad thing is looking at the roster is that Joe had his career high in 8.4 wins last year, a byproduct of Smith playing out of his mind defensive Wins wise.
For his career Joe is .093
But he’s a five time All Star.
Why? Because he stays on the court.
His appearance on the leaderboards is not based on efficiency at all but playing time. He is generating 9% of Wins while on the court for his career.
There’s 10 players on the court at any given time. If each player is the same then they each get 10%. So what does Joe’s 9% tell you?
Terry for his career has generated 86 wins!!
Joe Johnson 55. Are you telling me Joe is going to reach a Kobe-esque 10 wins every season to make up the gap?

West is opting out. Locked into a $7.5M starting salary or so if he resigns with NO, which I imagine he can get even under the new CBA. I have to imagine Oden is gonna get a QO at least, would probably take full midlevel to pry him away, and even that’s a maybe.

OB – On ESPN it is being reported West did indeed opt out, knee injury and all.
And it is being reported that the Trailblazers told Oden as long as he followed their workout plan and rehabilitation instructions, they would make the QO offer to him.
What if the Hawks look like this next season:
Center – Al, ZaZa/Collins/Samhan
PF – Josh/Rolle/Benson/Malcolm Thomas
SF – Marvin/Sy/Joe Alexander
SG – JJ/Lighty
PG – Teague/Hinrich
Or if we ditch one of the Thomas/Samhan/Alexander crowd, and kept a Wanamaker or McCamey
That may be an extreme youth movement, but if the guys can play, hey I say keep them.
I still would like to see a Grant Hill/ T. Prince/Battier backing up or starting in place of Marvin.
I do find it interesting instead of needing vets, we now feel like we have the correct vets and can go with youth. And I know cheap money factors into that as well. You don’t have to pay the 2nd round, undrafted types nearly the money of even the vet. min. guys.
Oh well, should be an interesting off season – Except for the lockout.
It doesn’t even look like there trying on a new CBA, either side really right now. Could get ugly.
I wonder if that favors the Heat like the Journalists seem to think, if there is a shortened season that is. Some have said the Heat win it all in a 50 game season. Not sure of their rationale

That’s basically a 7 man rotation there, unless you think any of those street guys can actually be a useful 8th man on a playoff team (I personally don’t, I like Benson and Lighty for the future but they’re extra guys next season. Maybe Alexander or Woods are worth something next year from the camp guys, but that’s a big maybe). And the guard rotation is really thin… you’re really rolling 3 deep there. Lighty can fill in for a game or two, but imagine a situation where JJ and Hinrich have to sit a game. That’s scary.
I wouldn’t mind seeing one or two of these guys make it if Sy last year is proof we want to use the D league, but I’d rather see 2 more guys on the roster that are ready to be rotation players.

SteveW, I bet we have more centers than that on this roster. Al/Zaza/Collins/Thomas(current player rep)/Benson and he might even have Hilton back.
I see Benson getting little if any minutes. He gets the Pape Sy treatment followed by the Teague treatment…totally ignored until forced to start. Larry has a system when dealing with rooks.
And you see Benson as a PF? Yes, Sund really got us a guy who is going to take minutes away from Josh and Al.
And having Alexander, Lighty, Benson, Thomas, and Samhan all make the major league roster? Never in your lifetime. Larry/Sund aren’t going into the season with so little experience. They aren’t going to babysit. We’ll be lucky to see 2 new faces besides Benson.
I don’t think we go 15 deep either. Sund does not and never maximizes his options. Larry will have preseason extras, but it then thins out dramatically.
We will be fortunate to actually have Teague as a starter, and that will be a reach.

The Hawks won 2gms in rd 2 against the Bulls, and could have easily won a 3rd. We managed to do it without Hinrich, with Teague being thrown into the fire under very difficult circumstances, and Jamal giving us next to nothing offensively and hurting us defensively as always.
This yrs team will likely have,
1-no more DEF liabilities,
2-more speed, quickness, versatility, size, athleticism, depth and experience all around,
3-a more focused JSmith, who wants to prove everyone wrong and show he doesn’t deserve to be traded,
4-a team that’s more familiar with the systems, the HC, and his expectations.
With all of these factors at play, how much improvement do any of you see taking place with this team?

I prefer a starting lineup of Teague, Johnson, Smith, Horford, and , with a bench of Hinrich, Williams (do I have an option?), Pachulia & Collins.

Ehhh, you’re probably right, but you know me…sometimes I just can’t resist.
I’ve learned over time that the blog monster is a biased and picky eater. I can’t even control it when moderating my own blog…
As for the Horford Hate, I don’t lose sight that some of the criticism (by some people) is on target.
But, I maintain that you have to watch and see how a player like this reacts. One rough playoff series and suddenly we forget his accolades to this point? All I can say is that a guy who makes the all star team more than once and even makes all NBA is usually a guy who can work on his game and get better. He’ll let his work ethic do the talking.
I can remember when people said he had no offensive game. Yet, he just had his best season yet (excepting the playoffs).
That’s how it works – you become good, then people gameplan against you. Then, you have to learn to overcome that. I’d say he’s doing well on the path for somebody who doesn’t have elite talent.
That’s why I stay so angry with Josh. He actually has elite potential , but he just can’t get it together and keep it. Which is why he also has never received the accolades of his teammate. Well, that and his attitude.
Fact is, Josh should be as good as or better than Shawn Marion was in his prime. But I don’t think he’ll ever reach that level. One day his athleticism will be gone, and then what will happen to those dunks and blocks?

My God Hawks are dumb. Every other year there will be a 7′0 kid who wants to play next to a center to avoid banging.
Ryan Andersen lol this is just the beginning of the end for the Hawks. I’ll Go with the local teams (Lakers, Clippers) instead.
Having Horford penciled in as a long term player is just as bad as having Smith at the 4 and expecting him to score with his ball handling and no jump shots.
Hawks will suck (as in no title) because they missed the only chance to upgrade their defense. No NBA champion in the past 10 years has ever won with only one top defender.
You had a chance to build around Smith and win with bad contracts and you blew it, Ironically you lowballed Smith and gave Johnson 3 times as much money to get outplayed by Marvin Williams while moving Williams out of his natural position at the 2. What incompetency my God.

I don’t think we’ll do better than Zaza as a backup center. Somebody who produces better than he does in consistent minutes is going to cost money, and without a trade happening, I doubt we acquire such a person. I mean, Sund and crew are talking about re-upping Jason Collins and what not. I think I can tell which way THIS stream is flowing, ya know what I mean?
In light of the money issue, I think the best thing we can do is concentrate on acquiring a PF who best compliments Zaza. My suggestion is a tough guy who can defend the rim and rebound, and maybe has an outside shot (although an inside game would probably fit better).
We didn’t have that in Powell, and I don’t think we can count on Rolle/Armstrong/Benson/ for that. I mean, we just don’t have the evidence that supports that idea. However, knowing Sund and his current bosses, they are just fine with proceeding exactly that way.
The fact that we can’t give Marvin away to anybody is the ultimate indictment. While I don’t know how he sees it, that would be enough motivation for me to make something out of myself…

“Assuming we don’t make any trades, what starting lineup do you think would be the best way to go. My suggestion would be:
OC-AHorford
PF-JSmith
SF-JJohnson
SG-KHinrich
PG-JTeague”
There’s no doubt that this lineup features our team’s best players, but I feel like it has quite a few potential shortcomings. For one thing, assuming that Jamal Crawford isn’t back with the Hawks next season, this lineup would essentially leave the team entirely devoid of solid bench depth. There would be no backup PG, and unless L.D. plays Teague significant starter’s minutes, Kirk will be logging a lot of minutes at the PG and SG positions. Our best player coming off of the bench would be Marvin if we used this lineup, and I’m guessing that we would have a very short rotation (probably 7 players, maybe 8 at most in important games). Another shortcoming with this lineup is the fact that it features a very small backcourt. Both Teague and Hinrich are tenacious defenders, but I feel like they would struggle defending many of the bigger guards at the PG and SG positions. This lineup also eliminates the team’s unique ability to switch on most picks, since Kirk and Teague just don’t have the length or strength to defend non-wing players.
Personally, I would go with this lineup:
PG – Jeff Teague
SG – Joe Johnson
SF – Marvin Williams
PF – Josh Smith
C – Al Horford
This is basically the same lineup that we’ve used for the past couple of years, with the only exception being Teague starting at the PG position. Defensively, this is probably our most versatile lineup, and it still enables us to using switching as a tool at times (relax, I’m not suggesting we abuse this technique the way Woodson did). Also, I’d go with Teague over Hinrich since I feel that he enables the team to play at a much faster pace, which more effectively utilizes the skills of our players. Also, Teague has the ability to get into the paint and create for himself and others by doing so. This is something we desperately need from our guards.
Now, I realize that a large number of people hate the idea of Marvin getting a starting spot, but I feel like it is best with the current personnel to keep him as a starter for various purposes. First off, he’s really the only true SF we have on the roster, and Damien may not even be a Hawk next season. Also, if there is one thing Marvin does fairly well, it’s defend his position, and I feel like we are more solid defensively with him at the 3 than with any other player on this roster. Josh is not accustomed to chasing around many of the shooters at the SF position, and playing Joe there negates some of his physical advantages (e.g. his size).
Also, another large factor in why I would suggest the lineup above is due to the fact that it gives us a bit more bench depth. It allows for Hinrich to play backup PG, and to play the PG position more so than the SG position. I feel like Hinrich is at his best when he is playing PG. Hinrich also brings some much needed floor leadership and shooting ability to bench, something that it will surely be missing next season. His ability to stretch the defense with his shooting is also something that our bench will, desperately, need.
Several factors are really up in the air at this point due to the fact that there is no guarantee as to whmo we will see fill out the roster next season, but I feel like the starting lineup which I suggested earlier would likely be the best option, barring any trades for impact players.

That’s called passing ability. There’s a difference between getting that many assists because you know how to pass to the right guy at the right time, and getting plays run for you in spots where you are most likely to be successful.
It’s the same reason Smith continues to be as inefficient and inconsistent on offense as he is. He gets the ball so much on the perimeter, where he is LEAST effective. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always translate into assists. It translates into badly missed shots and the ball going the other way…
As to the way the Hawks have been managed over the last decade, I can only agree…

Well, you’ve hit the nail on the head with the coaching habits. I hate that it’s true, but it’s just plain true.
To be honest (and to answer your question), I do have a hunch that Sund (or should I say Gearon) will pass on trying to acquire a quality FA defensive minded center.
It’s crazy, really, because they said they’d be drafting somebody to help that situation out (the defense, rebounding). I mean, have they not been paying attention to what goes on with rookies around here? I’m not saying that rookies should automatically get playing time, and there are a lot of factors to consider along those lines. However, don’t tell the general public that you draft a kid to help out THIS YEAR when we know better…
My guess is that we’ll just see which version of Powell or Joe Smith we get this year. Although, this time instead of Collins/Powell/Thomas it will be Collins/Armstrong/Rolle.
Benson will be investing in tweezers so he can pick the splinters out of his arse…

all we had to do was defend, rebound and fill the bench with average 10% players. All we get is guards who need to shoot. Str8 and narrow.
But you’re all obsessed with All Star nods.
How many All Stars nods does Jason Terry have? 2-Al? Five-Joe?
And as far as STATISTICAL EVIDENCE is concerned building around Horford is worse than building around Brad Miller who peaked at 125 Offensive Rating.
Horford is at 121 which is the peak for someone his height.
Larry Nance and Bill Lambier are the only 6′10 players in the 116 points pace for their careers. Try building your offense around them lol.

I wonder if we’re lowballing players, getting the cheap ones, to make a run at Jamal? I doubt it, but just wondering.
I doubt the new CBA will actually allow us to re-sign Jamal at anything near what he wants (at least what I would expect he wants; he made 10.8m this season. I would guess he would want at least 8 m per for 4 years, more if he can get it.).
They’re talking about with this new CBA, with a “flex cap” system, a harder cap than the luxury tax, but not a total hard cap, that some teams may actually have to trade players to meet it. Would be required to trade them. Some have mentioned the amnesty provision as well, which may be included.
But if they come in with a flex cap at 72-75 m, which is what the owners want to start, teams like Dallas, Orlando, the Lakers etc., aren’t signing anybody, even there own FA’s.
They gotta do something with salaries though – and I blame the owners for paying marginal players too much money. But look at the salaries this season:
2nd highest paid player at 20+ mill. per year – Rashard Lewis – almost garbage really
5th highest paid player – 18.7 mill – Micheal Redd – really hasn’t played in 2 years
#7 AK47 – at just under 18 mil. per – Did almost nothing
#8 Arenas – 17.7 mill – Ditto – and aging, injured former superstar
#9 Yao – 17.6 mill – Hasn’t played in a while consistently
So 5 of your top 9 paid players in the League are basically not contributing or contributing very little. And that doesn’t include:
Peja making almost 16 mill per
Same with Kenyon and Elton Brand, even though they both stayed kinda healthy this season.
They do need to adjust the system somehow.

He has the proportionate abilities of a taller David Lee. You’d think it would make Amare Stoudemire but it doesn’t.
Horford outranks Amare in a lot of categories but Offensive Rating. Amare played in Phoenix yet he has a lower pace.
Why? because he takes the shots himself and slows the team down to get to the line. Zach Randolph Dirk are all lower than Al.
Al creates assists, passes ahead etc. He’s a center. Horford has peaked and theres no shame in saying it.
Horford has nothing to be ashamed of except that he cant play in the post or separate from his defender.
People think being bigger than David Lee= success but no. The bigger you are the more likely you are uncoordinated.

The Hawks showed some resolve in the postseason, but they never were the consistently rugged defensive team that Drew envisioned. Eventually Drew realized he may not get this group of players to play that way no matter how much he talked about it.
I don’t know what’s more sad…the fact that Drew can’t get these guys to play tough or the fact that the above statement is true in most cases…
And if you think that blocking shots is a sign of toughness, you’re wrong.
Sadder still that we’re looking for toughness in free ageny minicamp. Seriously? We have to get toughness out of the guys who are out there just trying to find their way to a job? From guys that won’t get to play?
Just how much is “end of the bench” toughness going to do for us? Our problem is in the core. You know, the guys who actually play…
Etan Thomas is tough…didn’t get to play.
Stop playing games, ASG and Sund…add your toughness where it counts – among the rotation players.
Quit cheaping out on us and hiring “tough guys” who won’t sniff the court.

We have to run this year to make up for the offensive deficiencies with the bigs..
Start Teague and run with the wind at our backs!!
Exactly. This team has been built to run since Billy Knight started putting it together. Too bad he didn’t know what a point guard was…
And too bad that Woody wanted to run a halfcourt offense consisting of Joe and any other scoring guard doing all the offensive work.
Then came Larry DRew and the “never before seen brilliant pentangle offense” which oddly enough is ALSO a halfcourt offense.
This team could run anybody off the court short of maybe the OKC Thunder or the Golden STate Warriors.
But we don’t run. We don’t run for a number of reasons:
1) Coaching idiocy.
2) Lack of solid and consistent rebounding.
3) Under-utilization of young and speedy pg.
4) Forward who thinks he is Magic Johnson and should run the break instead of being the League’s nastiest finisher and human highlight reel.

Our top 7 players (in no particular order) are JJ, Josh, Al, ZaZa, Hinrich, Teague, and Marvin. Plus they want to bring Collins back (I’m sure he fits in their price range too). And we also have Pape Sy and Benson.
So how much difference is Lighty (or whichever player they keep from minicamp) going to make on next year’s team? LD talks about players having defense in their DNA. But that player will be lucky to get 5 mpg, so how helpful can they be? Mario West gave everything he had on defense, but what difference did he make?
The Hawks need to make a change among their core, or they need to make a change at HC. That is the best way to change the culture, and hopefully, lead to improvements.

we need to let go damien wilkins, etan thomas, and hilton armstrong. i think mccamey would be a nice option as our third option in case teague or hinrich get hurt. lighty could take wilkins spot as a specialty defender guarding multiple positions. i think joe alexander could be a decent pick up for our 13-15th spot, giving us athleticism, could u imagine a fast break where teague gets a steal up top and has joe alexander and josh smith running with him on the wings?(highlight factory) i hear everyone talking about omar samhan and aaron gray as some possible pickups. i dont think we need samhan if we have zaza kito and collins, but i did really like his game at st.marys. i think we could sign aaron gray and him and zaza would get most of our C minutes with collins only playing against orlando and kito playing more backup PF this first year or some C when we play GS NY fast teams etc. i think our best options are to sign mcCamey, lighty, alexander as backups. and to either sign a veteran PF and spend more than vet min, or get aaron gray and let rolle/benson play our backup PF spot. either way i think the hawks are progressing and even though some bloggers want immediate trades or whatever we know for sure this current team is at least 2nd round bound, heck maybe we reach the ecf..aim high

OBRIEN-to a large extent, Sund and the ASG have gone about the business of changing the culture of this team. First they traded MBibby and added more perimeter DEF to the starting lineup. It also eliminated the need to force everyone the other starters to compensate for his poor DEF.
Since we’ve likely seen the last of Jamal in a Hawks uniform, it will force Drew to change his approach from trying to win with OFF almost exclusively, while meerly talking about DEF. Anyone that relied on Jamal and Bibby as much as he did

Both last season and over his career, Kirk has a higher effective field goal percentage than Marvin.
I’d rather not start either one of them. I’d like Kirk coming off the bench because he’s a little undersized for a 2 guard and is ideally suited to be the 3rd guard in the back court rotation, and I’d like Marvin coming off the bench because he is generally ineffective and the more limited his minutes are, the better.

“He’s a 6′8″ guy with a 7′0″ wingspan who can outjump just about anybody in the League. Imagine if he blocked out when a shot goes up. Dude should be leading the team in rebounding. ”
Smoove and Al had identical defensive rebounding rates last year. Al’s offensive rebounding rate was higher than Smoove, in part because he plays closer to the basket, which in turn is in part because he doesn’t have to play small forward.
Something that often tends to get lost in the shuffle is that as athletic as Smoove is, he matches up with bigger players on a pretty regular basis, nearly as much as Al does. Athleticism isn’t necessarily going to help you on the glass if you are going up against someone who has a significant size advantage.
Of course, offensive rebounding rates are affected in a big way by whether the team’s philosophy places more value on transition defense or attacking the offensive boards. Both Al and Smoove saw significant dips in their offensive rebounding rates this year as a result of a change in coaching philosophy.
All of that is a long way of saying I don’t think either Smoove or Al’s rebounding is something to complain about. I do think, however, that Joe and Marvin can do more on the boards than they did this year.

Clarity from Etan Thomas amidst the current drama between the NBAPA and owners. Things sure look different from the players prospective. When you have a millionaire-owners vs.millionaire-players standoff, resolution will definitely take awhile. Again, I don’t know how much of Smoove’s dip in offensive rebounding rate is on him and how much is on the shift in coaching philosophy, but at least some of it is due to changes LD made from Woody’s scheme.

“I love that trade, but why would Dallas do it? I’m sure they’re gonna resign Caron, plus Haywood is a rugged 7 footer in this league”
With the new CBA likely to bring more salary restrictions, the Mavs are going to be one of the harder hit teams since they have $63 million in salary committed to next year already before re-signing any of their free agents. I think Chandler is going to be their top priority to re-sign. I am not so convinced that after keeping him they will have room to give Butler, Stevenson, and Barea what they can make on the open market. With Shawn Marion and Corey Brewer still under contract for multiple seasons, I think Butler is out the door, and I think they would be happy to dump Haywood’s salary since Mahinmi filled in pretty capably for him during the Finals and is signed for a minimum salary. It would mainly be a cost-saving move for them, and also a way to replace some of the defense that Stevenson provided.
“Haywood will be 32 in November and you should all be aware that he is an old 32 since he is known for his work ethic and for taking care of his body.
He is the impersonation of the word “overrated”.
He hardly played in the finals (due to injury) and the Mavs hardly felt his absence. Cardinal was 10 times more valuable for them than Haywood would have been if he was available.
To dump Marvin’s bad contract and get an even worse? Good grief, no thanks.”
I am not a huge fan of Haywood or his contract, but he is about as useful of a player as the Hawks are going to get in exchange for Marvin. If the new CBA as rumored has an amnesty provision, the Hawks can always take a chance on Haywood and simply cut him if he doesn’t pan out.

Saying that to say this, Teague better be ready cause his bench time wont be long.Larry even if it pains him will be turning the reins over to Teague earlier then he probably planned in each game. OP forgot:
5) Forward who thinks he’s Magic Johnson only thinks so because he knows if he hands it off to one of the ball-stopping guards, they’re going to pound out the shot clock and then launch a contested 26-footer that’s just as easy for a guard to rebound as him.
Therefore, forward in question, noted for outlet passes when someone actually runs, will have a new wide receiver in Teague, get the ball ahead and then trail.

Actually yes i did, which kind of side tracked me a bit. As I thought Josh is predominantly a 4. I’m assuming Sam Smith did the lists as far as what position he’s seen each player play on a consistent basis.
What really caught my eye was the fact that “according” to his layout…the Hawks are [suppose] to be an elite team.
Go figure…

From earlier;
I’ll attempt to answer your query.
1st a little history.
In 88 / 89 the Hawks screwed up their roster.
At that time they had a core somewhat like today’s Hawks.
But, dare I say, better.
Bigger, more balanced, + a bonafied SuperDuperStar. [Nique]
The Core:
*Nique
*Doc
*Tree
*Spud
*Kevin Willis
*Randy Wittman
*Koncak **[koncak was not a bad player]
**Detroit snookered us into givin’ him a big kontract
You know they were a Jim Dandy bunch
when the 1st four I mentioned are known by one name.
It began in 83 / 84 when they hired Fratello,
this young midget, ex-football player / coach…
as head coach of the Hawks.
He already had Nique, Doc, Tree, & Wittman on board.
I can’t remember if Doc or Witt were drafted that yr or not.
Two of the other three came in subsequent years.
I suppose Tree was already around – he was the oldest.
They had a good run.
Tree was only 33 or 34 in the summer of 88.
I do not remember the particulars of the trades,
-but-
we brought in,
Moses malone & Reggie Theus
gone were *Kevin Willis, Tree Rollins & Randy Wittman.
Willis must have been inj – he was back the following yr
Theus was around only 1yr, Malone 2 yrs.
The chemistry was damaged irreparably.
The shame was they were not old…..
Tree was the oldest, yet he and Malone wer the same age.
That year 88 /89 they lost to Milwaukee in the 1st round.
The following year they did not make the play-offs.
After that season they fired Fratello.
Enter the Bob Weiss era……………….3 years / I think ?
______________________________________________
The reason I gave the history lesson was to
contrast the difference in those years & now.
Those Hawks were considered for a couple yrs
to be the best team in the NBA.
They should have kept that core together.
They were ultra successful.
[hand grenades & horseshoes from winnin' it all]
Fratello the “Little Napoleon” stressed Defense.
pg = Doc / rim defender = Tree / SS = Nique
Witt could shoot / Spud pushed the pace /
Koncak rebounded & knew his role /
* and Kevin Willis was the enforcer !
*** Balance ***
Also they had Ted running the show – who better.
They were the model of consistency,
built through the draft, from the ground up,
they were exciting, “Human Highlight Film”,
and they were winners.
Every year they had a chance to win it all.

“What really caught my eye was the fact that “according” to his layout…the Hawks are [suppose] to be an elite team.”
The Hawks fit his criterion of “two top 5 players at their positions”, which is the reason why they are mentioned there. He has Joe and Al rated 4 and 3 respectively at their positions. Of course, shooting guard and center are pretty shallow positions in terms of talent at the top. Put it this way: the 3rd and 4th ranked PGs, SFs and PFs on that list are significantly better than either one of them.
Those other teams he mentions that had two top five players at their respective positions had two players who were arguably top ten in the entire league. Joe and Al are nowhere close to that.
All that aside, there is plenty to take issue with in regards to his rankings. Smoove should be listed among the power forwards first of all, and secondly he should be no lower than 9th in that list of power forwards.

To a 44 win team, we are adding undrafted rookies. From a clueless coach, we are hearing about toughness. From a team with no top players, we are hearing about a core. From a young athletic team, we will not run.
It sucks to be stuck pulling for such a hopeless bunch (Sund, LD and ASG).

Trade Kirk Hinrich & ZaZa Pachulia to Dallas for Brendan Haywood, Corey Brewer & Dominique Jones. Hawks take on a ton of long term salary ($40M compared to $9M), but save about $2M for the upcoming year. I think Hawks might do it though if they see Jones & Brewer as the keys to the deal. Both are solid defenders and versatile enough to play a couple different positions.

@JOJO I love the thoughts of getting a center but as far as trades lets make sure we trade Marvin and sign a center. Tyson Chandler,Sam Dalembert comes to the top of the list. Right now I would trade marvin for just about anything.

Even if you want to put him as a small forward, J-BALLS is ranked kinda low on that list. What’s funny is, if Smith is our SF and Horford is our C, who tha F is our PF? I like Sam Smith but that one had me scratching my head.

dukester…I think we’ve all scrambled our brains trying to come up with a Marvin trade. It’s just when I turn any potential deal for Marvin around and look at it from the other team’s perspective, I have trouble making it work. Why trade for Marvin when you can sign any # of free agent SF’s for less? For instance, in a Marvin for Haywood swap, what’s Dallas’s motivation? Dumping the contract? Then ask for an expiring contract in return. Houston can probably help you out. Adding SF depth? You can probably sign Butler or Stevenson or Battier or Prince or Howard or McGrady for less than what Marvin makes, and you already have Brewer, Marion & Fernandez that can play the position.
There are 3 teams that I think can use Marvin as a starter or backup (Cleveland, Golden State & the LA Clippers). Two of those, Cleveland & Golden State, I think would have trouble getting a free agent SF of much value to sign with them.
I think Cleveland might give us the expiring contracts of Gibson & Hollins for Marvin.
Golden State is a little harder to match up. I think a Hinrich, Williams & Pachulia for Ellis & Biedrins trade could make sense for them. Hinrich plays behind & mentors guards Curry & Thompson. Marvin backs up the SF position, and Pachulia is better and cheaper than Biedrins. I think this is a Jerry West type trade where he sees value in veteran role players. Hawks would be thinner (trading 3 rotational players for 2 at equal money), and would have even less cap flexibility for the future. We would definitely be getting the best player in the deal though.

“Smoove and Al had identical defensive rebounding rates last year. Al’s offensive rebounding rate was higher than Smoove, in part because he plays closer to the basket, which in turn is in part because he doesn’t have to play small forward.”
Glad someone pointed this out. Josh only averaged about 1 less rebounds than Al during the regular season, and less than one playing a lot from the 3 spot in the playoffs. Josh would be considered one of the top rated small forwards in rebounding in the league.

NBA TV brought up the idea of who might like to make a run at Nene, with the Hawks and Celtics mentioned. I just don’t see the room there to do such minus a captain. But Denver could use a PF if Nene is inclined to move on from there. It would make them smaller quickly.
I just wish we had a more defined front office. Our identity is in more influx than Denver. I can’t buy into any elite player looking to come here.
And now that Drew has bought into the Joe ‘blue-collar’ comments, I guess that is our focus this offseason. I would hate to see the current executives get their hands dirty.
And Larry isn’t changing anybody. He is trying to keep his job. Without seeing the ending, I think we all truly know the last chapter to this coaching run.

Big Ray, what’s up…I can kind of give LD break because of the Hawks playoff performance. I’m reaching hear…but it appeared…the guys finally start to buy end into his coaching philosophy…with that said that doesn’t excuse the gaffe he had during the regular season…or game five in the Bulls series…or the fact that we should have brought in someone new and with previous coaching experience…if they were serious about challenging for the ECF…and changing the culture of the team…ONE THING FOR SURE…LD want be able to talk his way through this year…I believe we will see a more defensive focus from the Hawks.
Call me crazy, but this Free Agent draft class…may out perform a lot of the guys that was drafted this year…maybe even some the lottery picks…dare I say. I really like Lightly…when look at all gambles being made in this weak draft class…acquiring Lightly would be a Boone for us…I can’t help but winze at some of the moves being made.
I agree with Ken Strick , Sund is bringing in different type of guys to help change the culture…Actually I agree with LD statement of you have bring in guys with a curtain DNA…especially reserve guys…LD survive this season…let’s see if can improve next season…hey, if not…by than new ownership should be firmly in place…so actually LD is auditioning for his next gig…I think LD ain’t too far gone…to realize that.
Also, this year it makes sense to go after five seniors…in our situation… SOMEONE POSTED A LINK ON THE UPCOMING 2012 FAs…After seeing that list…if we can get a guy like Lightly…and get another serviceable BIG…that might be more prudent…that to go all out in FA in 2011.
In terms of Serviceable BIGs…if not a S & T with Marvin and filler for Haywood…or S & T with Marvin and filler for Dalember…I would take a chance on Gray if the price is right…or just resign Armstrong.
I also thing Zaza deserves to gets some starts…based on the opponent. To me Zaza proved just as much as Teague did…that he deserves more minutes…he is just a different player now…he plays with way more physically when he is in game…he could end up exceeding the value of his contract…MARVIN…not so much.
I hope ole Woody gets the Pistons job…I heard he was one of the front runners for that job…Woody deserves a second chance…like rest of his colleagues…that have circle the wagons before…I don’t miss him coaching the Hawks…at times…I was one of his biggest detractors…But I will always appreciate and respect what he did for this organization.

A) we get monta who can score, penetrate, get to the free theow line. B) get rid of marvin and get better product in return! imagine this starting lineup
teague
ellis
johnson
smith
horford
bench biendrins, benson & sy
sign some good role player FAs, sebastian telfair, jamario moon, jeff foster, david lighty, jason collins, joe alexander, demetri mccamey

marvin is good enough off the bench for boston to bite, hell he is backing up paul pierce for crist sakes, and they would dump KG’s huge salary and get a more versitile sg which they desperatly need in joe johnson, atlanta would get a wing player that can shoot to help offense and loss the iso joe by the way doc rivers would make joe play team ball. and get kg to play PF though he is taller than Al im sure they would move Al to center till they can afford a decent one and with KG managable contract atleast year wise there is a future for the hawks.

There is no value in Marvin right now…that doesn’t even mention his salary. But if Speedy can be traded????????????
I agree with Ken S….Marvin as a bench player works because he goes against the bench on the opposing team. Marvin not very good other than that.
If this roster here is going to improve minus the minimum vets, it will take amnesty to rid us of Marvin, who will be free to sign with anyone, and/or a trade of a captain.
We still have more PFs than we need. Smoove as a SF….on offense, no thanks. Will Horford be an all-star if listed as a PF? Uh, no.
Those are our best bargaining chips if there is a move to be made.
I still say we only find room for 2 rooks, Benson, who someone listed as a PF? earlier, and perhaps a Lighty. That will be Larry’s 2 whipping boys this year.

Another prospective on Keith Benson
If you ask Benson the strengths of his game, the description comes off sounding like a scaled-down version of Hawks All-Star center Al Horford.
“I think my athleticism, being able to run the floor, shot block,” he said. “I can score in the post, and I can also be a pick-and-pop-type player, so I think that will translate.”

The Truth,
Benson is a shot blocker and seems to have some post moves (good touch around the rim, uses the glass well).
Al is not a shot blocker and always had limited post moves, does not know how to use the glass and now is almost exclusively a pick n’ pop expert. He does have a semi-reliable jump hook in the lane but he is shying away from the paint more and more.

Good points. I hated those moves for me first Theus and past his prime Malone. They should’ve kept that core. I feel tough that this group might do something similiar in trying to trade AL or Josh and i am not sure it would be a great idea depending who they get back.
It is strange maybe cause I am older but i dont get the connection with this team that I do with the Nique teams or even the Eddie Johnson teams. Even in the 80’s when they would play top teams the hawks for the most part gave effort and was a good product. I remember when the hawks lost to the sixers in the playoffs think 82, they reallyt tried just that the talent there wasnt ready. your thoughts grandad?

Real GM!
Any real GM should be blowing up every GM’s phone in the league right now. As a matter of fact, this bombardment should have started before the draft and even moreso afterwards.
They should be finding out which FA’s are scheduled to be cut on this Thursday to see if anyone they want will be shook loose. First dibbs will be gone by secret hand shakes before Friday. Is that legal? Probably not, but who’s telling. Like Bilichek says in New England (Patriots), “If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying!”
You best bet Pat Riley recruited and had LeBron two years before his “Decision” we all know that DWade was working on him at the Olympic Games. Tampering? Sure, but who’s gonna’ prove that? Lips are sealed.
Sund, hopefully has already decided who he is not bringing back and should be trying to set up deals before the lock out in 72 hours.
I hope he is not pinning all his hopes on undrafted talent from this camp.
We do need another veteran and perhaps, Lighty and Smahan-sp, from what the blog experts are saying are being keyed in on. Especially if
Jamal is a goner, or Damien.
Here’s my point: Be proactive – please? Don’t wait for the cardboard bargain bin this year. A new owner will most certainly be aggressive financiall, if for no other reason, ENTHUSIASM!
I don’t think Cuban will let Tyson get away, especially if the new CBA offers the luxury tax option. I sure hope Amnesty is available.

Zaza/Collins/Armstrong/Thomas/Benson in that order for C minutes. It doesn’t sound like Al is going to be our center for any given amount of minutes. It would be great if Benson could become our Taj Gibson, but Larry has his rudimentary ways.
And Marvin and Teague are going to need scoring help on their unit. NBA TV has JC1 as the 6th rated top FA, just ahead of Greg Oden….
10 – D Jordan – R
9 – Y Ming – U
8 – JR Smith – U
7 – Oden – R
6 – JC1 – U
5 – Humphries – U
4 – Gasol – R
3 – Chandler – U
2 – West – U
1 – Nene – U
Not the best class of FAs, and other than JC1, probably all starters.
JC1 isn’t returning. I wouldn’t mind seeing Vince or T-Mac or Anthony Randolph somehow make it to our lineup. The latter 2 will be the cheaper options. Tayshaun is out of our price range.

The Truth,
Benson – who may be a scrub – was the go to guy on his team and was a rim protector (3.6 blocks per in 32min).
Al was never the go to guy on those Gators’ teams and was never a rim protector (1.8 blocks per in 28min).
They may have some characteristics which are similar but when you have a guy who is an intimidator at the rim, that ends up being a marked characteristic, so “scaled down Horford” seems pretty idiotic to me.
I coined the Diaper Al label and will continue to criticize his underrated softness until he brings back his Boss Al game overalls again and takes off that white collar he now uses.
Nonetheless, I am not saying that Al is worthless, merely that he is overrated and we are making a huge mistake by accommodating his path to baby-ass-skin-softness.
He will never be a top 5 PF in this league but he could be a top 5 C (if he wasn’t already).

“Its the results that count” unknown Author
Let me try a different approach:
Hey Coach I got number 5 that’s considered a great passer in fact hes tied for the lead in assists?
But my team only won 44 games out of 82…I know there are other issues but lets take a look at this one for now. Okay?
Well there’s two ways to look at this situation:
1- He leads the team in assist but the team is 21st in scoring @103.xx pts. (20 teams ahead)
2- He is not leading in fta’s not even close!
I would not change a thing if your team won 55-60 games and part took in an ECF for 2011.But that did not happen..So change must occur and its up to the you the coach to make that change.
You make it known to your #5 that he must set up in the post and attack the rim to draw fouls..You would want him to be a leader in fta’s or close to one…
Or you move him to the 4 if he cant comply and put another big @ the 5..but now your putting more pressure on the guards to score more and more consistently due to the fact that Josh has to move to the 3 and he is inconsistent at best in the scoring department..
Change has to come from you Larry…The ball is in your court, so what cha gonna do?
Run and run more?

brigadierjerry,
Two major differences between the 80’s Hawks and the 10’s Hawks:
ONE:
Nique was absolutely devastating on offense and the ultimate showman. He could not defend a crippled driving to the basket though and we suffered on account of that.
It’s a shame, but true.
But his “excitement factor” will always be a lot more more enthralling than JJ’s quiet two way game.
TWO:
Fratello’s left shoe would coach the Hawks better than Drew and Woody together.

I too have jabbed at Al (on a number of occasions) for his reluctance to know what he wants to be a C or PF. As a result, his mindset could also be a contributing fact as to why his game has declined manifesting in the playoff perhaps. However, I disliked Dirk’s game in the pass as well and dismissed him as being “too soft” to win anything. I think LD will “talk” more defense this year because there is no Bibby or Jamal.
But having a guy at the end of the bench who plays defense (Benson, Lighty, etc) wont matter much because they will get inconsistent PT all season (imo).
It’s the core guys that need to buy in. But I think they want to see some consistency and accountability from LD before they do.

I read the article the Hawks have ELITE TALENT…..
We just need a coach who knows how to use that talent.
I think the Hawks are ELITE and I think we will see proof of that next year. LD and Sund had an EPIPHANY about this team and our trying to correct it….WE ARE SOFT AND WE HAVE NO BENCH!!!
They realized we are the 2ND most talented team in the EAST but we don’t have enough toughness in our core or our bench. They are making a TRUE effort to change that with the players they are trying to bring in. They have addressed our perimeter defense with Bibby and Jamal leaving and Kirk and Teagues arrival. They drafted a shot blocker and will probably sign another in free agency.
Look for the Hawks to go after players like: Josh McRoberts, Deshawn Stevenson, Pryzbilla and Jeff foster.
I recognize the fact that the Hawks went to game 6 of the semis and LD made some rookie coaching mistakes(Like not playing Zaza and Wilkins more and Jamal less), but he looks like he is correcting those mistakes…. GO HAWKS

Rufus, I have read where Pryz would retire rather than relocate and Foster has only played for Indy…he isn’t going anywhere. But I agree, you gotta have reliable guys you can go to in a punch. I watched Cardinal come in and frustrate the Heat and thought this guy doesn’t deserve that playing time, but there he was helping his team. Lots of guys out there like that.
For our bench, I would take an Eddie House off the bench to get us some points. Way better than Bibby, yet had to sit while watching Bibby hurt yet another team.

I started reading the article about the Hawks looking for BLUE COLLAR PLAYERS and I had to stop because I got upset at what was being attributed to LDrew concerning his efforts to get the team to be more consistent and rugged defensively. How can he continue blaming the players for his dogmatic insistence on playing his 2 DEF liabilities during the times with DEF was needed?
I guess in his mind it was their fault for being unable to consistently cover their man as well as Bibby’s and Jamal’s. Against the Magic and Bulls, we saw how much of a difference having a DEF minded starting PG made on this team. It’s extremely difficult for any HC to get his players to buy into his idea of going all out on DEF, when he insists on burdening them by starting and/or playing 2 of the NBA’s worst perimeter defenders major mins.
Whether both Teague and Hinrich start or not, we will no longer have any total DEF liabilities manning our perimeter DEF.

A yr ago we managed to win 53gms with a different HC, but with the same starting lineup that started this season off. We also had the NBA’s 40th ranked PG as far as overall OFF production. That means we won 53 gms with a PG that lacked speed, quickness, athleticism, penetrating ability, OFF versatility, not to mention he played absolutely no DEF.
It also means Bibby was not only the NBA’s worst starting PG, there were 8 backup PG’s who were more productive than he was. As a 3pt shooter, JTeague isn’t as good as Bibby. But as a PG and basketball player, he’s head and shoulders better. Actually, the same can be said for Hinrich, except he’s in the same ball park with Bibby as a 3pt shooter.
I hope LDrew doesn’t do the same thing with Benson that he did with Teague, and that’s use his lack of weight as an excuse to bury him on the bench. I remember how Isiah Thomas got literally run out of town for drafting a smallish PG named Damien Staudemire, and then drafting a rail thin 6′11″ 220lb center name Marcus Camby.
From all indications, Benson’s overall OFF appears to be better than Camby’s as a rookie, and he appears to be quicker, faster and more athletic.

BRIGADIERJERRY-Your guess is as good as mine. With LDrew, it’s not a matter of if he’ll use him or not, because we all know he won’t if he refuses to learn from the mistake he made by continue Woodson’s stupid approach towards Teague. However, if he’s smarter than Woodson, and heeds the message being sent to him by Sund and the ASG, he will.
And by the way, that message is, you will no longer hold the team back by continuing your OFF 1st at all cost approach over DEF. We’ll no longer sign the veteran players you want us to surround you with, like EThomas, JSmith and DWilkins, only to have them be all but ignored. Either attempt to develop and utilize the young talent we’re investing in our look else where for a job.
With EThomas, DWilkins, JCrawford, MBibby, and HArmstrong not coming back, Sund and the ASG have decided to go with youth, potential and development. In other words, they’ve decided to go in the direction originally intended under former GM BKnight. As a result of catering to the desires of our 2 HC’s MWoodson, we ended up loading up on unproductive veterans rather than developing our young talent.

One of the things I didnt like about LD last year is he seemed to blame the players almost everytime. “They didnt execute, they didnt defend, they took too many jumpers” etc.
Very rarely did he own up to not having a good game plan, or not putting the players in a position to succeed etc.

This hawks ownership is similar to the nets having a group of owners. The Nets oweners were called the “Secaucus Seven” and were clueless didnt do anything until they sold their ownership to a group of two local investors around 1998-1999. After that the Nets made moves acquiring Jason Kidd and then made their title runs starting in 2000. Hopefully Hawks will follow suit when new ownership comes

I always find interesting how coaches play how they used to play themselves. Drew coaches the same way he played offense and Doc coaches the same way he played defense
I kind off wish LD would get a defensive coach like lawrence frank or kelvin sampson i think it would make a big difference. I dont know i just dont trust LD to think defense first. He hasnt shown that. I just hope he learns his lesson but time will tell i look forward to season whenever that is

I agree O’Brien. I also was disappointed in how he sold Josh out in the playoffs. All year he said that Josh should shoot that open jumpshot as long as it’s in the flow of the offense, then in the playoffs when the heat came down on Josh, he turned on him and said that he has been trying to get Josh in the paint all year, but he somehow ends up on the perimeter. That is why Josh was confused as to what a good shot was. LD needs to mean what he says, and say what he means. Same thing with Teague. He said how much confidence he had in him, and promised him more playing time this year, and then refused to play the kid significant minutes until he was forced to in the playoffs.

Effective Field Goal Pct
1. Nene Hilario-DEN .615 limited to dunks and no defense
True Shooting Pct
1. Tyson Chandler-DAL .697 NBA Champion
Marvin @ SG > OJ Mayo > Kirk
Kirk is a point guard. And in the lineup I suggested limiting minutes and trading Al would win us 50 games if everyone returned to 13% level.
Josh Smith – 15.5% in 2009-2010
Johnson – 14% due to Smith’s DEF & low usage Crawford had their best years
Williams – 14% before Crawford + High Def Rtg + Now he’s going against 2 guards and playing uptempo with Malcolm Thomas.
Tyson Chandler- 21% 26 mpg, 18% was high b4 Dallas, 70% True Shot.
9 WS this year, previous high 8.0
Perkins –
Dalembert – 11.1% for career, 12% with Elton Brand, Andre Miller etc
Thabeet – 11% rookie year, no playing time inconsistent minutes. expected to score. Best defender on two teams so far other than Chuck Hayes.
Unfortunately HOU teams and MEM needed volume scoring.
Was on pace for 4 WS wins.
Jordan Hill – 13.5% due to hustle plays in 270 minutes last year, 16mpg upon trade
Marreese Speights- 16mpg, played power forward with Dalembert = 3.8 WinS
and 14.6% rookie year. USG% 21.9%

Brad Miller 2x All Star? remember him? yeah 0 titles.
Trade Al Horford we are not the Phoenix Suns we actually need free throws or 3s and defense from the 4 spot.
Get Motiejunas + Hill I beg of you. We could win 52 games and become top 8 defensively with Thabeet, Hill and Motiejunas. Please

I wonder if the Clippers would bite on a trade of Joe Johnson for Chris Kaman and Eric Gordon? They have been trying to get rid of Kaman’s contract for a while, so they can resign Deandre Jordan. They will also need to give Gordon a contract extension in 2012/2013, so Joe’s contract wouldn’t be that bad for the Clipper’s. The Hawk’s get what they need and maybe so do the Clipper’s.

So are we arguing whether Thabeet is better then Horford?
Or is Thabeet, Hill, and an unproven rookie better then Al horford?
Are we comparing minutes? A lack of?
Are we saying that a Horford for Thabeet, Hill, and Motiejunas trade is a [good] trade? That it would benefit us? I’d keep Horford over anyone on the Houston Rockets roster, with [maybe] an exception of Yao Ming. In which I’ve read that the injury he suffered will probably put him in the ranks of players such as T-Mac. But a persons heart and soul and determination can always overcome negatives. So I choose to be optimistic about Yao Ming.
Anyways, {Horford} > {Anyone on Rockets Roster}. <– [opinion]
If the argument is that the players (Thabeet, Hill) have not been given a chance to show that they can play…well that still puts them into (maybes). Last thing we need is (maybes).

Two COLLEGIATE championships.
Have you guys ever thought that his game doesn’t translate into winning?
When forced to play a slow halfcourt style (Playoffs) he struggles.
Jason Collins man? Horford 7 points and 4 rebounds in Game 6?
Championship teams don’t have any scoring centers that can compete with the guards for shots.
Think about it. Dirk Nowitzki over Haslem and Bosh, 33 yo Kevin Garnett posting up Josh Smith in Game 7, Pau Gasol dominating Rashard Lewis.
Were Bynum and Perkins getting touches?
I’ve done the research and if a coach limits a players minutes and makes elite/ just good players go against backups then they can mimic superstars.
Lamar off the bench produced more wins than Al. How can we win when we’re top heavy like that?
@Jeje Jordan Hill, Mr. 7′2.5 and Zaza Pachulia To combat Dwight Howard.
Dwight Howard was once 3 for 10 versus Thabeet and Zach (bad defender) and Thabeet kept it close until Vince Carter turned into Joe Johnson and posted up OJ Mayo.

@Dept. Of Unintended Irony lets be like Miami and trade Zaza for Dwight!
Dwight is only half of a player on offense. Going after Dwight , you think he’s that naive he’d resign with Atlanta just because Josh is here?
Offense: Jeff Teague+Thabeet = Rajon Rondo + Perkins
Thabeet’s a cohesive end point on a play. A screener a roller and a dunker. If he’s not dunking right under the basket dont give it to him.
Ajinca for 1 million will lose you 4 more games than Kwame Brown if you start him for 26 minutes per game.
You guys REALLY think Dwight is impressed with Horford and Collins? I visit other sites and other teams are more obsessed with Josh than Al Horford.
How do you build a team around small ball when one big man is a center in a power forwards body and the other cant stretch the floor?
You cant trade Joe and get a good center. You trade Smith and you fall to top 20 defensively.
Hawks are at 105 points allowed per 100 and 3 points away from contending. Horford gives you nothing in the playoffs and if you had to win a slow deliberate Halfcourt game or go to hell there’s no coach in the world anyone would take Josh Smith Horford, Collins and Pachulia to score 20 points.
Hasheem, Hill, Josh Smith, Motiejunas (better Boris Diaw) can play defense and score with Teague at a playoff rate (under 110) dribble and draw fouls
