Atlanta Hawks: Minicamp Day 1
7:09 pm June 27, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Notes and quotes from League (Pre) Lockout . . .

Lighty is a live one. (Phil Skinner / pskinner@ajc.com)
- Before you ask: I didn’t get to see much live action. Media types got to see about 15 minutes of scrimmage at the end of the morning practice. So please hold your “How did [overlooked gem] look?” questions.
- I didn’t get to see Keith Benson scrimmage at all. When practice was opened, he was with a group that was off lifting weights. He does indeed look thin.
- The Hawks won’t be able to sign any players out of this camp because they have no open roster spots after signing Magnum Rolle. Their free agents technically don’t become free agents until Friday, but we know why that’s not going to happen.
- Whenever the Hawks can sign players, it sounds as if they will make a run at David Lighty. The Hawks worked him out before the draft.
- L.D.: “Lighty is a gutsy defender. He can defend maybe three positions. That is what we are looking for as we move into next summer. I want guys that can defend where it’s already instilled in him, it’s in their DNA. Lighty has been a tremendous defender throughout his career and certainly he would be a plus to have on this team.”
- Lighty on defense: “That is something where you help separate yourself from others. Everybody wants to see somebody score but the little things are what win basketball games. I try to focus on that.”
- Lighty said the Cavaliers, Pistons, Suns, Spurs and Hornets also wanted to bring him in. Why the Hawks? “It was about [looking at] teams that I would like and fit my style of play,” he said. “They have open spots and they have free agents at the two guard.”
- Lighty said he was less upset about not being drafted than were his family, friends and supporters. “For me, I’m the type of person if I have a goal I am going to reach it no matter what and I’m not going to stop until I do. I was a little down; I’m human. That was my dream and my goal to get drafted. And hear my name called, that was the big thing. I will play in the NBA one day. I won’t stop until I get there.”
- L.D. echoed Rick Sund in saying the Hawks want to bring back Twin. They seem less certain about Damien. “We are still taking about it,” L.D. said. “We haven’t made any decisions there. We will see what happens.”
- L.D. said the Hawks have “got to put a little meat on [Benson's] bones.” Benson said he’s ready: “They have good weight coaches here so I can put a lot of focus on that and plan out my meals. My main focus will be to put weight and strength on.”
- Benson said he thinks he can maintain his athleticism with another 15 to 20 pounds on his frame.
- L.D. on Benson: “He’s a really good kid. We did a background check on him and he’s one of the quality kids at the collegiate level.”
- Benson plans to hook up with fellow Detroit Country Day alum C-Webb, who lives in town. “I have his number. I’m going to reach out.” Benson played under Webber’s brother, Jason, who is an assistant coach at DCD.
- Peachtree Ridge product Jason Graham also worked out for the Hawks before the draft. “Graham can really shoot the basketball,” Drew said. “I didn’t know about him but watching some film on him and working him out, he can make shots.”
- When the topic turned to Al playing more power forward, L.D., like Sund, started talking more about versatility as a virtue than adding a full-time center: “The more versatile we are, it keeps the other team guessing a little bit. We did move Al around a lot last year. We moved Josh around. Joe played some three. Having a verstaile team makes us more potent.
- The word from multiple NBA people over the last few days is there was nothing much to that Josh to Minnesota trade rumor on draft day.
- But David Aldridge reports (about halfway down the page) there was something to that SI.com story on the imminent sale of of the Hawks.

We don’need to trade anyone…..
We need to redefine our Teams philosophy(Defense 1st), redefine players roles(defensive specialist, shooter and STAR). and develop a bench
Great coaches defeine their players role and how role that helps the team win. Simplify the game, BE GREAT AT ONE THING AND DO THAT THING WHENEVER YOU ARE ON THE COURT.
Woodson did not define the roles of his players, he let them set their own perameters and we had too many players trying to be what they are not.(Marvin trying to take people off the dribble…Josh trying too shoot)
I like what I am seeing from LD and Sund….I am a little optimistic.
PS. If we would have been trade back into the 2nd round and draft Keith Benson, David Lighty and Malcom Thomas, this Blog would have been VERY VERY HAPPY!!!! WE stand on the VERGE…give some credit.

We can’t have both thinking their are the #1 scoring option, if we want to progress. The player that develops their “Off Hand” should be the winner.

Mountain Jim!
We need to send you a satellite dish to keep you in the loop.
Sale very close. Sund still stirring the drink. Hold on Jimmy, that sale will go down as soon as the papers are signed, sealed and delivered.
I think the league offices have to be opened though. IDK how the strike will affect the sales process, I don’t see why it would?

Rufus1 – I agree with you, team is solid, but if LD was the answer I think the hawks would have been a lot better last year. Tune should have been set, but I’ll give LD benifit of dought as it was his 1st year and maybe he was learing things as he goes, Team has the player and Benson will be perfect addition, good job Sund. Key is keeping Crawford or replacing him with equal talant.

“I sincerelly don’t understand why this continued criticism of JJ after these year’s playoffs.
The guy showed up, on both ends of the court. Was just a notch under his averages and was fundamental on all wins we got.
If someone was a major disappointment during the playoffs, that guy was Diaper Al who was exposed as a one dimensional offensive player which has no balls and shies away from the contact that playoff basketball implies.
If you were thinking that JJ by signing a 100+ million contract would suddenly morph into Kobe or Wade, think again. He was never that type of player, but he still is a heck of a player ON BOTH ENDS of the floor.
Good grief… We went into the playoffs with a perimeter oriented offense, guided by LD who was thoroughly out coached, Diaper Al doesn’t show up (with the exception of garbage rebounding), Jamal disappears after game 1 of the CHI series and JJ gets the flak??
JJ, Teague, Josh and Zaza kept us afloat and competitive against CHI.”
@vava74, Yes Al proved hes not an ALLSTAR by his performance in the big games.
Garbage time does not impress us……
ALL NBA AL was not a disappointment because he’s done this before in the playoffs and regular season..You cant count on him to impact a game week in and week out. His limited skills wont allow him too.. I only remember two games, Clippers and Chicago were he played a major role in a win. He’s delusional if he thinks he can play the 4 on a nightly basis and contribute in a meaningful way..
Does he not remember 6′6 Chuck Hayes dismantling in Houston this past season? That will become more common in his 6th season at the 4 spot….
All NBA Al= Pretty Boy…I think WWClyde came up with that one….LOL!
w/o ISO, JOSH and ALLstar Tito jr dont even make the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KenS, your lineup is what will be given to Atlanta fans, whenever the season starts that is.
Larry will not sit Kirk until it is proven he stops igniting the offense. What we will have is 2 jump shooters in Joe and Kirk, neither how drive to the basket, and Josh on the wings. More of the same from last year.
DMB, I know you are salivating at the potential of Gearon and Levenson and their croonies being relegated to cheerleaders, which is still too good for them. They should never be allowed to re-enter Philips Arena.
Check with your sources and let us know if you see Joe and Kirk working on their jumpers, Collins and Zaza in boxing class to prep for DHoward, and see if Marvin has gotten off his backplane yet to start improving his core.
I agree with Ken, no changes, if any, are upcoming. The change in ownership doesn’t bode well at this juncture. Our ‘talent’ is just getting older while we dabble and ‘experiment’ with different combinations that Larry says will be hard to match up with…..okay….
Our roster will look like the corporate CEOs (the 3 captains) and the minimum wage class who fill limited roles and are brought in here to provide fouls and roster slots.
Someone mentioned Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. Never will this GM of ours bring in guys who will threaten the mix of the roster. Sund is all smoke and mirrors instead of applying long term solutions.
I go on the record by saying we will never advance with our current 3 captain core and where they are playing on the court.
Earlier today, I was reading about how Felton seems to come to camp not exactly in shape and it reminded me how we see Marvin’s game not exactly getting better as summers go by. I gotta think Marvin has the same type of mindset not being ready on Day 1. I think the injuries has continued to change his thinking to simply being a jump shooter.
And 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the hiring of one Billy Knight.
I still see a large portion of the dream that Billy Knight came in with:
Joe / Josh / Al / Marvin / that 5th starter that makes this team interchangeable. I recall his thought of “why does someone have to be a 1 or a 3?” It still sounds ignorant to this day. Without the potential of Jeff Teague, where in the hail would this fan base be?
It took Knight 4 years to admit we might need a PG, so he signs Speedy, the understudy to Chris Paul. You had to have a feeling that wasn’t going to go well.
Ah yes, memory lane with Billy Knight….5 years at the GM was enough for him to move on…can we get less than 5 with Sund?

It was not a bad pick,
Marvin has regressed due to COACHING…He has proved that he can be a 15ppg scorer on a playoff team.
I don’t expect Marvin to score 15 ppg because he was the 5th option. What I expect from him was to knock down open shots, rebound the ball better, and dominate in the post when guys like Luke Ridnour are guarding him. But he didnt.
In the playoffs just concluded, Josh averaged 9 rebounds per game in 37 mpg, and he played alot of SF. In 18 mpg, Marvin averaged 2 rebounds per game. How is that coaching?
And I will continue to use the Bruce Bowen example. On a Spurs team with Tim Duncan, Manu, and Tony Parker, Bruce was not a part of the offense, and he only averaged 6 pts and 3 rebs for his career.
However, he played lock down defense, and he consistently knocked down the 3 from the wing to help the Spurs win their titles.
So it’s not about scoring 15 ppg. Its about making IMPACT plays. And Marvin does not make enough of them.

Kind of like when Houston came to Atlanta and Al posted 24 pts, 10 rebs, 8 assists, 1 steal , and 0 turnovers on 69% shooting.
We can play this game all day. He has good games & bad games, but there’s no need to give up on Al or Josh. Give them some help up front and some leadership on the bench.

Just trade josh, so all of the heaters can see how terrible this team will be without him, and how Al will disappear once again in the playoffs. LMA is a 20/10 pf/c who didn’t get an AS selection and he played a lot of center. Dude has a way better post game than Al, same kind of mid range, and more aggressive. Al won’t even sniff an AS appearance once he starts at pf. Especially if he is the go to guy..

As for Billy Knight, what does it say about the ASG that they hired him, and even offered him a 1 year extension (that he turned down)?
Then again, this is the same ASG that hired Don Waddell to run the Thrashers, and he was worse than BK. After years of failed draft picks, coaching hires etc, they finally reassigned Don to another position.
If the ASG made better decisions, the Thrashers might still have been in ATL today.

Well, we need to trade marvin for something dammit. Anything just ship his big butt outta here! I’m sick and tired of him, I just can’t stand it anymore! He is a waste of talent, a waste of space, and he has no heart NONE, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA. He’s also soft.
I would trade him to Toronto for Leandro Barbosa. They’re not happy with Linas Klezia so They will bite. We could probably get Jerryd Bayless back as well if we wanted. That way we could Ship old man Kirk and his 9 million dollar expiring deal out for a Big.
Then Sign Tayshaun Prince and Al Thorton to revamp our SF spot. Barbosa Replaces Jamals production. Besides, Barbosa likes to attack the rack and draw fouls.

There is a sound sleeper in the midst of the Hawks free agents…Omar Samhan. Remember his NCAA tourney play? He has the skills to be a great addition to the bench if not an eventual starter. An overhaul of the bench is necessary. There is some great young talent in camp. Benson? We’ll see! Oh, new owners plz!

I guess one of the things I struggle with on this whole “hate on Al” deal is perspective. Al was hurt going into the playoffs, didn’t complain, but it kinda slowed him down, ankle and back.
Then it just seemed like LD was leaving him in the game to much, except that game he did the stupid 2 foul rule on him.
Now Al’s not a flashy player, but solid. He takes on 75% of the Centers in this League, and normally does a fine job against them, but there are exceptions.
But Al is kinda slow. Al is not a good shot blocker. Al went to the perimeter way to much this season. Al quit banging so much in the post. Al needs to bulk up some, but keep working on his agility as well.
But I’ve never looked at Al as some superstar or something. I’ve always just looked at him as an above average player who is not flashy. Who happened to be the 3rd best Center in the League this past season. Not because he’s great, just alot of decent, but not great Centers in the League right now. Dude is solid, rarely complains, makes good decisions, good passer (where he improved immensely I might add this past season).
It’s just that he made the All Star team that seems to freak some of ya’ll out. And the constant comparisons to Josh. He’s the anti-Josh so to speak. No flash, no oohs’ and aaah’s, but just solid.
And I still think they can both play on the court together and complement each other. And both seem to still be improving.
I just don’t get the “let’s hate on Al and defend Josh” bandwagon. Can’t we just say that both of them have strength’s and weakness’s, and it’s great to have a good frontcourt, and we hope they both do the things necessary this off season to help in the post, rebounding, toughness etc.?

Booo! I think Barea is too short to start in the League on a consistent basis. He will get posted up too much. But he is a great spark off the bench. 20-25 + mpg a game.
But Kirk can play the 1 or 2, so with Teague, who I really see only being a 1, we need Kirk more than Barea.
But in my ideal scenario, we have Barea backing up Teague, and Kirk backing up JJ, with JJ playing some 3 also to make the minutes work.
Barea would fit great on the Hawks.

About Jamal – my take has been on Pokhorev from the Nets, or the Knicks, or maybe even Chicago to offer Jamal 5 years 45 million, even with the new CBA.
He and Jason Richardson picked a very good year to be Free Agents in my opinion. Bad because of the CBA, but good because they’re the best SG’s available, and some teams will probably be willing to overpay for them.

Fire Sund Please…yes, I hope Samhan is reading along here and puts forth the effort to get signed. Then we can eliminate the dead weight on the bench that didnt see valuable playing time anyway. Truthfully, We need a new coach. If anyone was watching, the Hawks were playing on talent, this past season. Really, Woodie coached. But this is the main reason why Spirit needs to wash their hands of the Hawks, and your buddy Sund…lol. Atlanta needs aggressive mgmt. or they are doomed.

Gotta go thru this again, who do we have coming back next season?
ZaZa, Sy (probably), Rolle (probably), JJ, Al, Josh, Teague, Hinrich, Marvin, Benson (probably).
That’s 10, and I think you put Collins in that group, that would be 11 if he re-signed
So if we don’t re-sign Wilkens, or another FA or 2, I guess we could feasibly keep 4 of these guys.
If we do re-sign Collins,we would have 8 guys with experience, and the rest would be hungry DLeaguer types, unless we signed some vets.
Interesting. I wonder if LD would play them?
And Grant Hill, T Prince, or Battier would be great additions to this team also.
And I like the Aaron Gray suggestion somebody had.

Two horrific GMs (BK & Sund). Two abysmal head coaches. An ownership group that is nothing short of vile. A flawed roster featuring one of the worse contracts in recent history. A small & soft center who refuses to play the position. A defiant and frustrating hometown player. A former #2 pick who is unworthy to wear an NBA logo.
And yet, a top 8 finisher in the past 3 years. So is it that all of those others teams are truly that awful or could it possibly, maybe, perhaps be that we simply have become the type of fans who complain about everything despite being better off than most fan bases? In my house, we call that “brat behavior”.

@SteveW, I think at least two guys from this camp make the roster. I think the Hawks will go with young cheap talent at the end of the bench instead of washed up vets. @slimjr 11:21am post-
i think if we rid josh or al, its gota be al. al is very good but he really does nothing during the playoffs for us. he cant score downlow and his offense is evolved into 15 ft jumpers which is nice but he cant get that shot off during the playoffs. there are a few deals that come to mind we could maybe do dealing al, maybe by the deadline in feb if we are flailing around .500
deal joe/al/marv to orl for gilbert/dwight/qrich, orl might not gettin someone more promising “in their eyes” than al, joe is a big bonus over gilbert and we can give orl a future 1st as well. my second thought would be al and marv for monta ellis and andres biendrins. we need offense since jamal will not be resigning and al doesnt really provide much scoring. here is a look at the hawks 2011 playoff loses and what al contributed during them.
game 2 vs orl/ 10pts 10rbs
game 5 vs orl/ 9pts 14rbs
game 2 vs chi/ 6pts 14rbs
game 3 vs chi/ 10pts 8rbs
game 5 vs chi/ 12pts 10rbs
game 6 vs chi/ 7 pts 4rbs
i think if we plug in a above average player into our C that we’d get about the same production. for some people to say al is our best player i just dont see it. i think monta would give us a huge offensive boost and if ld wants a 3 guard halfcourt offense idk how anyone stops teague ellis and johnson with hinrich off the bench.

The #2 pick DW for All NBA Al would have work out because he was a star in college unlike Marvin and put incredible shooting numbers and had a great NCAA tournament under pressure..
The NBA world is fixing to find out this guy is a bonified scoring machine…….
This roster of:
TEAGUE, Barea
ISO, Hinrich
JOSH,

plus adding a couple of bench pieces to back up Josh and Teague what a ride!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Someone must really have a boring life, and/or difficulty coming up with an intelligent response, if all they can come up with is former GM Billy Knight and who he drafted or coulda shoulda drafted. When the season starts, all of you TRADE FANATICS will be greatly disappointed. The only changes that will be made to this yrs version of the Hawks will be to strengthen the bench.
Talent wise, this is a much better team than last yrs regular season record would indicate. There’s no way we would have eliminated Orlando, or won a gm against Chicago, with Bibby instead of Hinrich. We all witnessed the impact Hinrich had on the team in the 1st rd against Orlando. We all also witnessed the impact Teague had on the team in the 2nd rd against Chicago.
I’m excited about seeing how much more of an impact having both players will have on the team. However, when a negative minded critic claims the teams center, who led the team in rebounding, was the cause of the teams rebounding problems against Chicago, and claims he isn’t a facilitator, although he tied for the team lead in assists, it demonstrates an extremely low basketball IQ, as well as a low level of common sense and/or cognizant reasoning ability.

We should just cut Rolle since we have Benson now and not sign Collins until Aaron Gray is off the market on another team. With that said, Sund & Drew need to come to a conclusion on keeping a lot of these guys.
Lighty & McCamey should be obvious choices. McCamey makes Hinrich expendable enough to package with a.)Marvin for a perimeter shooting wing or b.) Zaza for an upgrade at center maybe.
Malcolm Thomas can give us a nice energy big like Taj Gibson, who can rebound, block shots, and other intangibles.
Samhan can easily become our best interior presence and may start and allow Horford to play the 4. The guy was a beast in college despite having no quickness nor hops..
Joe Alexander could provide a spark off the bench and start at 3 in small lineup. Very explosive and athletic guy. May can revive his career.
Zachs Graham would get the last spot to give us perimeter shooting if didn’t keep Sy.
1- Hinrich/Teague/McCamey
2- Joe/Lighty/Sy
3- Josh/Alexander/Marvin
4- Horford/Benson/Thomas
5- Samhan/Gray/Zaza
Teague needs one more year of mentoring and would probably perform better as the change of pace guard in a small lineup with Lighty, Alexander, Josh, & Horford. Samhan & Gray can alternate starts. Zaza & Marvin could possibly land us some perimeter shooting in a trade. I like Casspi for Zaza in a trade. Marvin may can be dumped for 2nds..

This guy has low expectations, but what do you expect after 43 years with a .493 (winning %).

doc, criticizing performances in a game is a little different than a post-season evaluation that suggests the whole franchise is beneath contempt. See the difference? Easy to get frustrated during the long marathon but at the end, it seems like you have to appreciate a top 25-30% finish.

Could we please quit with the Damn “Diaper Al”
remarks…..now look what yawl did…..,
yawl made me cuss, and I don’t cuss much.
Ms G-dad’s gon’ whoop my ass now !
Mary Ellen – as much fun as that sounds like,
-it really ain’t-.
She don’t like for me to cuss. (nary a bit)
Now back to my point;
I’ll try to refrain from using the JJ Maxx sobriquet,
if yawl will stop with the Al ____.
Look…Al is a hawk, Josh is a Hawk, Joe is a Hawk.
They all chose to be here.
[they re-upped]
Seriously, the dpr Al remarks are offensive.
Now have at it / Bash away !
