Atlanta Hawks: Minicamp Day 1
7:09 pm June 27, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Notes and quotes from League (Pre) Lockout . . .

Lighty is a live one. (Phil Skinner / pskinner@ajc.com)
- Before you ask: I didn’t get to see much live action. Media types got to see about 15 minutes of scrimmage at the end of the morning practice. So please hold your “How did [overlooked gem] look?” questions.
- I didn’t get to see Keith Benson scrimmage at all. When practice was opened, he was with a group that was off lifting weights. He does indeed look thin.
- The Hawks won’t be able to sign any players out of this camp because they have no open roster spots after signing Magnum Rolle. Their free agents technically don’t become free agents until Friday, but we know why that’s not going to happen.
- Whenever the Hawks can sign players, it sounds as if they will make a run at David Lighty. The Hawks worked him out before the draft.
- L.D.: “Lighty is a gutsy defender. He can defend maybe three positions. That is what we are looking for as we move into next summer. I want guys that can defend where it’s already instilled in him, it’s in their DNA. Lighty has been a tremendous defender throughout his career and certainly he would be a plus to have on this team.”
- Lighty on defense: “That is something where you help separate yourself from others. Everybody wants to see somebody score but the little things are what win basketball games. I try to focus on that.”
- Lighty said the Cavaliers, Pistons, Suns, Spurs and Hornets also wanted to bring him in. Why the Hawks? “It was about [looking at] teams that I would like and fit my style of play,” he said. “They have open spots and they have free agents at the two guard.”
- Lighty said he was less upset about not being drafted than were his family, friends and supporters. “For me, I’m the type of person if I have a goal I am going to reach it no matter what and I’m not going to stop until I do. I was a little down; I’m human. That was my dream and my goal to get drafted. And hear my name called, that was the big thing. I will play in the NBA one day. I won’t stop until I get there.”
- L.D. echoed Rick Sund in saying the Hawks want to bring back Twin. They seem less certain about Damien. “We are still taking about it,” L.D. said. “We haven’t made any decisions there. We will see what happens.”
- L.D. said the Hawks have “got to put a little meat on [Benson's] bones.” Benson said he’s ready: “They have good weight coaches here so I can put a lot of focus on that and plan out my meals. My main focus will be to put weight and strength on.”
- Benson said he thinks he can maintain his athleticism with another 15 to 20 pounds on his frame.
- L.D. on Benson: “He’s a really good kid. We did a background check on him and he’s one of the quality kids at the collegiate level.”
- Benson plans to hook up with fellow Detroit Country Day alum C-Webb, who lives in town. “I have his number. I’m going to reach out.” Benson played under Webber’s brother, Jason, who is an assistant coach at DCD.
- Peachtree Ridge product Jason Graham also worked out for the Hawks before the draft. “Graham can really shoot the basketball,” Drew said. “I didn’t know about him but watching some film on him and working him out, he can make shots.”
- When the topic turned to Al playing more power forward, L.D., like Sund, started talking more about versatility as a virtue than adding a full-time center: “The more versatile we are, it keeps the other team guessing a little bit. We did move Al around a lot last year. We moved Josh around. Joe played some three. Having a verstaile team makes us more potent.
- The word from multiple NBA people over the last few days is there was nothing much to that Josh to Minnesota trade rumor on draft day.
- But David Aldridge reports (about halfway down the page) there was something to that SI.com story on the imminent sale of of the Hawks.

I feel bad for Josh and Al, because the only NBA coaches they have played for is Woody and LD.
If they had better coaches, they might all be further along in their careers, and be better players.
I dont feel bad for Marvin, because only Marvin (and “it was not a bad pick”) can make marvin better.

@O’Brien
I think that’s kind of unfair to say about Marvin. If we are to say that Josh and Al would improve under a more expirenced coach, whose to say Marvin wouldn’t.
And vice versa,
If only Marvin can make Marvin better……then why can’t Josh and Al make Josh and Al better?

Marvin would likely have benefited from better coaching the same way Smoove and Al would. But at the same time, Smoove and Al have noticeably improved their games independent of coaching over the course of their careers while Marvin, aside from improving his shooting range after his third season, is pretty much the same player he was in 2005 when he got drafted.

Sale of Hawks looking legit
The story concerning the imminent sale of the Hawks by SI.com last week is pretty much on the money, the team’s denials to the contrary. The sale is close to being completed, though it won’t be finalized in time for an approval vote by the Board of Governors at its meeting Tuesday in Dallas. There is a single, and up to now, anonymous buyer, according to a source. The amount? I’m told it’s in the neighborhood of $300 million, including debt on the team. The team’s current ownership group, Atlanta Spirit, is expected to remain on in a minority ownership capacity, according to the source, who’s been briefed on the terms of the pending transfer.
Another group led by the founders of the Outback Steakhouse chain in Florida also put in a bid on the team, according to a source, though it’s unclear how much they put up or if they were ever seriously considered …
You know, every time David Aldridge says something, it’s legit. Therefore, I believe this report is true. And I’m damn glad to see it.
Meanwhile….

Truth, truth, and more truth…
Not sure why it is that Sund and Co. have to think about whether or not to keep Damien Wilkens around. Do they have another SG/SF who can defend that well, that can also hit a shot or two and doesn’t hurt you when he’s in the game (while also not complaining about minutes)?

NBA – Pro Basketball: Horford to adjust his game, position next?
Posted: Sun, Jun 26, 11 – 8:11:07 PM EDT

Al Horford Credit: Getty Images
Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Al Horford is a huge man just about everywhere other than his current place of employment. [When] Horford returns to the court to play center for the Hawks, he’s considered undersized for his position. For the second consecutive offseason, an emerging storyline is if the Hawks will add a full-time center so Horford can permanently slide to his preferred power forward position. But the bigger question might be if Horford will figure larger in Atlanta’s offense in 2011-12. Horford was by far the team’s most efficient scorer last season but ranked just fourth in field-goal attempts per game. “It will be interesting because I’ve always been very team-oriented,” Horford said at his camp. “If coach [Larry Drew] comes and tells me, ‘Listen, I want you to develop more [in isolation] and I want you to create plays,’ I could adjust my game to that.”

Never sounded so good, when compared to 8 feces throwing orangutans!
A single vision for this franchise is like X-Mas in June. I just hope the mystery guy sits behind the team bench (like Cuban), wearing a Worldwide Clyde T-Shirt, a pair of Shaq sized Chuck Taylors (size 23), with a jar of vaseline in a black duffle bag.
And, when the referees, GM, players and coaches MUCK up? I hope our mystery man greases the tip of his left shoe and stick it where the sun don’t shine!
This city, these fans – We deserve a WINNER. As for the ASKG minority shares, I can only have hopes and dreams that it measures 7% collectively.
They should be the equivalent of 8 wizards hiding behind a curtain with no buttons to push. Better yet, they can sit on the observation deck of
The Starship Enterprise and push those fake lighted buttons on that cardboard panel and go warp speed where no man has ever gone before.
Beam them up Scottie! Thank God the fairy tale is almost over, we fans can wake up like Dorothy in Kansas and realize the ASKG characters were all part of a terrible nightmare. Between the 8 orangutans, they collectively have:
No Heart
No Brain
No Courage
And now, No Home. The End and Good Writtens.

I sincerelly don’t understand why this continued criticism of JJ after these year’s playoffs.
The guy showed up, on both ends of the court. Was just a notch under his averages and was fundamental on all wins we got.
If someone was a major disappointment during the playoffs, that guy was Diaper Al who was exposed as a one dimensional offensive player which has no balls and shies away from the contact that playoff basketball implies.
If you were thinking that JJ by signing a 100+ million contract would suddenly morph into Kobe or Wade, think again. He was never that type of player, but he still is a heck of a player ON BOTH ENDS of the floor.
Good grief… We went into the playoffs with a perimeter oriented offense, guided by LD who was thoroughly out coached, Diaper Al doesn’t show up (with the exception of garbage rebounding), Jamal disappears after game 1 of the CHI series and JJ gets the flak??
JJ, Teague, Josh and Zaza kept us afloat and competitive against CHI.

The Hawks can probably get Haywood for Marvin. No need to give up Al.
If future salary flexibility is not a concern, Marvin for Haywood makes a lot of sense for the Hawks — and really for the Mavs too, since it saves them money long term and gives them a replacement small forward in case Caron Butler leaves. The only problem is that Haywood has a ton of years and money left on his deal, and as long as the DASG owns the team that probably means they either won’t consent to the trade or will dump some other salary to accommodate Haywood.

Haywood will be 32 in November and you should all be aware that he is an old 32 since he is known for his work ethic and for taking care of his body.
He is the impersonation of the word “overrated”.
He hardly played in the finals (due to injury) and the Mavs hardly felt his absence. Cardinal was 10 times more valuable for them than Haywood would have been if he was available.
To dump Marvin’s bad contract and get an even worse? Good grief, no thanks.

Philips’ 43-night problem: lots of dates to fill, too much competition
Print
E-mail
.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Downtown Atlanta is no longer the region’s only place for major event space and that logistical fact will make it more challenging to fill the 43 days suddenly available at Philips Arena because of the departure of the Atlanta Thrashers.
“Williams said the facility will target concerts, family shows, rodeos, figure skating shows, gymnastics meets, bull riding, multi-day events and big name sports contests like the NCAA basketball tournament. He’ll also be able to place the Atlanta Hawks in some of the Thrashers’ weekend dates, which attract bigger crowds.”
“Still Conlon said Philips will have challenges because there is no one easy answer. They may pick up a few concerts that would have passed them by, had the Thrashers still be tenants. But in the prevailing market conditions, this doesn’t mean a flood of business either”
____________________________
Just a few key excerpts from an interesting article posted this morning. I posted very similar comments immediately after the Thrashers sale. I believe it was KevinM or SteveW? That chimed in as well.
This is of interest to me because, if the Arena is blacked out for the remaining 324 days of the year, (The Dream making money is a …. well, A Dream) Then such a loss in revenue will bleed money and impact the business of the Hawks.
There is no way around that. When you look at the socioeconomics of the world today, disposable income and near 10% unemployment along with similar NBA team markets?
Atlanta Spirit Group has benefited from the Thrashers revenues, not just inside the Arena, but restaurants, hotels, public transportation and arena jobs opportunities. I know that ASKG had reported 20M in losses from funding the Thrashers, but do we really believe these LIARS? They lost 20M solely because they were in over their collective heads and never had a CLUE how to run ONE sports franchise on a competitive level – let alone TWO!
Good Bye ASKG! Your work here is DONE!

And speaking of my prediction that, Stern, the owners and the players will agree to a two week extension beyond June 30 to stave off a lockout and try to reach an unlikely agreement?
I levied that prediction with the fact that The NFL did that prior to their current lock out. I failed to mention that the Phoenix Suns and Vince carter extended their decision for what, 2 months? Before deciding if Phoenix will exercise their team option to retain Vince @ 15M or simply offer him a buyout @ 4M.
The reference to Vince Carter offers a very reasonable example to my theory that: good faith negotiations is not a necessary component to extending the current CBA agreement.
Here’s my point: teams can begin to release unwanted FAs and sign bench players with their veteran minimum, TPEs and MLE contract options. I doubt if any prudent GM would forge any blockbuster trades or max – contracts until the new CBA is in place.
The Hawks GM can release: Powell, Armstrong and Thomas, then look at the camp players or other FA’s aggressively before they end up at the Dollar Tree sifting through the bottom of that bargain bin again.
Aye Sund! For the love of basketball, buy a computer and go get your man! Don’t wait around – Just in case their is an extension to this lock out. Be prepared for any and all possibilities.
Stop hiding behind the new CBA excuse. Do your job!

With the team up for sale, there’s no way anyone will be traded before the team is sold. I’m not certain a new owner would be willing to approve the trade of a valuable asset like JSmith, AHorford or JJohnson so close to training camp, and with the CBA expiring. I think all of these trade rumors were smoke screens to keep TRADE FANATICS excited and tuned in during the off season.
Unless JTeague simply blows everyone away during training camp and preseason, LDrew will start KHinrich, along with SG-JJohnson, SF-MWilliams, C-AHorford & PF-JSmith. I believe LDrew, like his predessor MWoodson, still has visions of a guard dominated, jumpshooting, half court oriented OFF team.
And since Hinrich is more efficient in a half court style OFF than running fastbreaks, and has superior jumpshooting ability, he’ll become LDrew’s new version of MBibby, which should also please JJohnson.

dmb witha cba pending and no basketball for a while the situation becomes darker. the thrashers might have been the only game in town next year if they had not been sold for a song. heard 120 folks lost jobs recently because of the sale af the thrashers. that info gets lost.
meanwhile in l a the dodgers say the divorce and bankruptcy has no effect on how the team is run. well it seems they have the sam pr department as the hawks and a brand even bigger than the hawks and askg is to be smeared beyond recognition. so sad, oh yeah i am sure there is someone out there that will say it is the fans fault for not coming and watching an inferior product while spending big league dollars to do so.

Ken Strickland,
I don’t think JJ is on the “Hinrich as a starter” bandwagon.
JJ was very vocal in support of Teague and both meshed well during the CHI series making our back court more dynamic and more diversified in the way they played.
In theory, JJ needs another guard who is a sharp shooter to which he can kick out after a failed ISO but with Teague on the floor we will see teams having to defend the Hawks differently since Teague can carve those defenses and make some serious damage and JJ knows that.
Teague – Hinrich – JJ can make a very very potent 3 man rotation on the back court.
vava74
June 28th, 2011
9:18 am
And, honestly, if Hinrich gets 30 minutes per game backing both Teague and JJ, I am sure he will be happy.
There are 96 back court minutes. Divide that for 3 and you see 3 guys happy.

It is desperately needed..barely above .500 team record with the 7th highest payroll means heads need to roll asap….
Its fools gold to think that all of a sudden the guards are going to be able to carry the team for the whole season with or without JC1.In this league you need quality bigs too shoulder some of the burden..Time and again we saw none of the bigs except for brief moments in crunch time step up and make an impact.
You lose to Charlotte by 33 points? Huh?
Sund gave up way too much for Hinrich..
Teague needs to start for this team but watch Larry screw up the obvious and insert the other guy in there…..

Here’s yet another example of a poorly thought out suggestion which was motivated by a very low basketball IQ combined with a dislike for all things Horford. If we traded AHorford for LAldridge, who is a very good player,
1-Who plays center, since LAldridge is a PF?
2-What do we do with current PF JSmith?
3-How can Aldridge improve our team over Horford when he doesn’t rebound as well, which is an issue with us, or do anything better than Horford other than score?
4-If you think Horford is soft, have you seen Aldridge play?
5-If you think Horford relies too much on shooting jumpshots and doesn’t have a good postup gm, have you seen Aldridge play?

VALVA-good point. Teague’s speed, quickness and penetrating ability can do more damage to a double teaming DEF than us always trying to shoot over them. We’ve tried that failed approach for the last 7yrs. With Teague starting, we’ll finally having the same quick, fast, athletic, penetrating PG that’s caused us so much trouble over the yrs.
With JJ and Teague, we’ll now have 2 starters that DEF’s will have to account for on every possession.

..You failed to mention a couple of key stats..1,325 is the number of TURNOVERS that Josh has made in his career, that is almost 3 a game, Al has had only 481 in his career…497-1,041 is what Josh shot last year, which is too much, Al was 513-921 which equals out to 53%…7 boards a game is awful for a STARTING PF in the NBA…Al, playing center at 6ft 8 is a double double most nights!.You made a solid point about the Free Throws, but you failed to mention that Josh is not a good FT shooter, Al is better at that also…factor in the the horrible shot selection by Josh, and Al is a better basketball player, Josh is more exciting, but it is a reason why josh has found no takers on the trading block.

It is possible that Marvin would improve under a different coach. But did woody and LD cause him to regress?
Does (lack of) coaching make you miss open shots (unlike Josh, Marvin is a True SF and has a good stroke), does (lack of) coaching make you disappear, does (lack of) coaching make you fumble and stumble, does (lack of) coaching make u unable to take advantage of mismatches?
I think Josh would benefit the most from a new coach because he didn’t have a college coach, but he and Al have improved mostly on their own, whereas I think Marvin regressed mostly on his own.

Allstar Al has a low turnover rate than Josh because he is not a facilitator. He cant create his own shot. He is a receiver with no creativity. He does one of two things with the ball. Shoot his midrange set shot or he passes the ball back out to Josh 80% of the time…With that style of play it is expected that he should have a lower turnover ratio……No surprises there….

I’m impressed at the group the Hawks landed for minicamp. Lighty, Malcolm Thomas, McCamey and Wanamaker were all guys who justifiably could have been taken with the 48th pick. Seems like the Hawks and Heat got all the good UFAs.
Wish they could keep two of those players. They really need a guard like Lighty or Wanamaker who’s a good defender and can play more than one position. Right now Pape Sy is the 4th guard and there’s no 5th, so that’s scary. Sy has big upside, tho.

Sold yet? Sund gone yet?
Don’t allow him to trade Josh at all – he will get taken just like the Hinrich deal.
The mismanagement of assets and cap space under Sund has been incredibly bad. I hope the new owner(s) fire him the first day.
