The Hawks are not on the verge of being sold. Josh Smith has not been traded yet, unless Rick Sund made a deal right before I just saw him get some chicken here in the team’s offices.
This is the place to talk about these things and any other developments throughout the night.
Oh, yeah, there’s also the draft. The Hawks have the No. 48 pick.
UPDATE: The Hawks selected Oakland (Mich.) University center Keith Benson.
Here’s his NBADraft.net profile. DraftExpress has an interview with Benson.
Below are some excerpts from Benson’s teleconference with reporters. I’ll update the blog after Sund comes out to talk.
UPDATE II:
KEITH BENSON
(questions about strength)
“I’ve been out in Vegas working out with the weight trainer there and getting stronger. I’ve put on about five pounds since the Chicago event. I’ve been working out three times a week, working every day to get stronger.”
(potential to add weight)
“I think I have the frame to put on a lot of weight. My game will really increase once I put on that weight and some strength. I think I can put on 20 or more pounds.”
(what he knows about the Hawks, why he thinks he’s a good fit and which Hawks does he look forward to playing with)
“I’m looking forward to playing with Al Horford. He’s developed into the really good ‘bigs’ in this league. I like watching Joe Johnson. They are an athletic team and I think I can contribute to that. They have some youth and like to get up and down. I watched them a lot this year.”
(how much did he weight when he got to Oakland, and what does he weigh now)
“I was 190 when got to Oakland, and 6-9. I grew a couple inches. And I’m about 224 now.”

Kito looks promising to me.
His moves are kind of old school.
It’s like watching NBA highlights of the 60’s and 70’s since his release, his good use of the glass and his apparent knack to the get the roll are not typical on nowadays’ players.

Keith Benson main combine numbers are
Height w/o shoes 6′10″ w shoes 6′11″ weight 217 lbs wingspan 7′3.75″ standing reach 9′1.5″ vert 36.0 and for those who think he will be to weak he benched 12 reps.
Javale McGee main combine numbers were
Height W/o 6′11″ with 7′0″ weight 241 lbs wingspan 7′6″ standing reach 9′6.5″ vert 32.5 benched 7 reps
and just for chits and giggles
Marcus Camby combine numbers w/o 6′11″ weight 223 lbs.

Soloman Jones had no offensive game. Benson can score inside with his left or right and he has a nice outside game as well.

One problem with comparing Benson’s combine numbers to those of McGee or Dwight Howard is that Benson is a 22 year old college senior while Howard came straight out of high school and McGee was a 20 year old college sophomore.
A better comparison is Hilton Armstrong, who like Benson was a 22 year old college senior when he was drafted. Hilton beat out Benson 13-12 in the bench press and outweighed him 240-217 at the draft combine, both are about tied in their wingspan and standing reach, Benson is taller by less than an inch, but the one area where Benson clearly grades out higher is in his vertical.

For those thinking Jeff Teague is weak, he did more reps at the combine than Keith Benson, and was also almost a couple of years younger than Benson at the combine.
Teague was a “neighborhood” gymnast – strong and in great shape.
Grandad – Benson works out at Garnett’s gym in Vegas – not one KG owns, but one he has utilized to improve his game.

Solo at the draft combine (at age 21, a month shy of his 22nd birthday) graded out shorter than either Hilton or Benson, but weighed more than Benson, had the same standing reach and wingspan as Hilton, and had a higher vertical than either one. He only managed half as many bench press reps as Benson though.
At the end of the day though I take these measurements with a grain of salt. All it tells me is that Benson and Hilton are very similarly built and that it’s likely neither one is quite the same caliber of athlete as Solo. Benson’s toughness and ball skills are going to go a lot farther in determining whether or not he has an NBA future than predraft measurements.

I don’t have a link but the eastern conference draft review comes on again at 11pm tonight and at the very end of the program the Hawks are discussed and David Aldridge confirms Ian Thomsen’s story of the Hawks being sold soon and stated that the new owner is buying the majority stake for $300 million and the Spirit Group is keeping a minority stake.
DA also said the ASG are very secretive about who the new owner is. DA also said Sund just basically put Smoove on the block to see what kind of interest he would garner and that the Hawks wanted a lot in return for Smoove, hence this is why Smoove is still a Hawk.

I know you like old school music like myself. Last couple weeks TVOne they had some good stuff on Denise Williams, the Spinners and Alexander O’Neal and Cherelle!!
In regards to Hawks draft pick
Keith Benson all you can really ask for is for him to be a serviceable big. The problem I have is I am not sure how much playing time he is going to get. I will take 6pts 5 rebounds from him his first year if he can get the playing time. Reminds me of a poor man’s Mcgee or Loren Woods who if he didnt have an attitude problems would’ve had a decent NBA career. The one thing I am just not sure if Larry Drew can lead this team to the Finals.

I watched Hilton alot in college and he had no offensive game and the worst HANDS I can remeber. He was drafted that high because UConn were national Champs and he got alot of exposure.
Benson is a much better offensive player than Hilton ever was.

I’ve got one thing to say about Benson….it will be at least 3-4 years before he will be defending Dwight with any success that is…he may get a shot at him in the preseasons, but Larry is not about promoting the rooks.
And while we on the subject, can we for once get a big man coach in here? How is it that we don’t have a guy who teaches our guys every day in practice? Who’s taking the credit? Bender? What the heck is Mahorn doing on NBA-TV? Get him back in the trenches!

Hawks 11-12
PG-jeff teague/Kirk hinrich
SG-joe johnson/pape sy/kirk hinrich
SF-josh smith/marvin williams/damien wilkins
PF-al horford/josh smith/keith benson/magnum rolle
C-zaza pachulia/al horford/keith benson/jason collins
I think looking at my rotation for 11-12, our top priority should be another backup SG. idk how/if pape sy will be able to come in for joe and hopefully we add a shooter FA SG. another spot we could improve would be a backup PF. I would like to keep al at PF about 80% of the time this season and so I dont see rolle being able to shoulder that weight of a good backup PF and being efficient. benson should rotate PT from some minutes at 4 if Zaza or collins is in and be able to play at 5 if we play a fast team and we need more mobility at 5. My last thought would be a 3rd PG that could actually be effective if teague or hinrich get hurt. i like demetri mccaney to fill that spot.
i dont see a need for hilton armstrong or etan to come back. if we absolutely cant get a big man id take etan before hilton, just because etan is jacked and has more of an impact defensively/hustling than hilton does.

On Benson:
KB – B-ball IQ higher than Hilton.
[I'm not attacking H.A./ I actually hope we keep him]
KB, can finish through contact.
The film I watched, he seemed to always be getting hit
at his point of release and finished his shot.
Measurements are great…..for comparisons.
*Najeh is correct – skill is what he must bring to the table
in order to be an NBA player.
[along with hard work, enthusiasm, professionalism, & toughness]
*He did, however, show enough skill at the collegiate level to;
avg a double – double his sr. yr / 3+ blks / two time conf POY & DPOY.
Look…He ain’t D.Howard, never was, never will be.
But at # 48 he was the best Center/Big on the board.

Drew said Benson can play both center and power forward. Drew said he wants the Hawks to take a “very aggressive approach” to defense next season, and Benson could help that process.
“Going into the draft and looking at the free-agent market, if we are going to be one of the top teams in the [Eastern Conference] we have got to get better defensively,” he said. “And what better way to get better than to bring in a shot blocker.”

A few things to look at about Benson:
2009-10 HIGHLIGHTS
Named Lou Henson National Mid-Major Player of the Year
2.Named Summit League Player of the Year
3. Associated Press All-America honorable mention
4.Led the league in blocks w/117, rebounds @368) and double-doubles @ 18
5.His Rebounds total was one shy of Summit League record
6.He broke single-season school records in blocks and rebounds
7.His 189 free throws made this season ranks third all-time in school history and ninth in league history
8. His blocked shots total ranks third all-time in league history
9. He earned five league player of the week accolades this year, second-most in league history
10. Had 20 or more points in 14 games and double-figure rebounds in 19
11.He led the team with double figures in 31 of 35 games
12.He blocked five or more shots in 11 games
13.He grabbed 47 rebounds and blocked 14 shots in three tournament games en route to being named All-Tournament
14.He then averaged 13.0 ppg, 15.7 rpg, 4.7 bpg at the league tournament
15.He tied his own single-game school record with eight blocks in the season opener versus Eastern Michigan on Nov.14, adding 15 points and 13 rebounds
16.He scored 20 points, six rebounds and four blocks at No. 1 Kansas (11/25), holding All-American “Cole Aldrich” to 2-for-10 from the floor
17.He posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds at No. 12 Michigan State on Dec.12
18.He had 11 double-doubles against league opponents
19.He scored a game-high 28 points and nine rebounds in the NCAA tournament game versus No. 18 Pittsburgh on March 19…………
He got better every year and he adjusted to the speed and the game coming out of HS and adjusted well. My good friend Kenny Herock who was the former GM of your beloved Atlanta Falcons believed in one theory that i shared when i was in L.A.,is that you draft on “consistency of progression”.
You evaluate your list of players on the improvements made each season in numbers, the level of competition, how teams played him each year, how they bounced back from a bad game and why they had a bad game.
Sometimes it may have been that they were called to do to something different because of another players injury or etc..
And you look at how they adjusted..
Thats why your draft team has tons of files on any one player.
You look for answers and you look for questions too..
Character,Sportsmanship,Comradery,Attitude,Coachability are all included (as you well know) in evaluating talent.
But the “Consistency or Progression” ranks higher than most of you think on grading a player.
Remember that.

McCamey coming in for a workout? Great, good player from Illinois. The only knock on him was work ethic and fire, or he may have been a high 2nd round pick.
That does concern me a little. Sund – Lack of fire
LD – Any Techs? Lack of many things including fire
Teague – Great, just lacks fire
JC2 – Has fire, so we trade him
Benson – Great but skinny, just lacks fire
McCamey – Good, just lacks fire
Our best player JJ – Max money, but lacks fire
Horford starting to lack fire big time
ZaZa has fire, so LD won’t play him, and yells at him
Josh is fire and ice
Once in 10 year talent Marvin lacks fire
Maybe Van Exel is going to release everybody’s inner dog, from Sund and LD on down.
PS – Now Hinrich has fire
That’s one reason I wanted a guy like Isaiah Thomas, drafted 60th – at least he showed fire in his belly.
Rondo – really not that talented, but has tons of fire.
Garnett yells at Big Baby, who is bigger in girth that Garnett – Big Baby cries
Garnett yells at Rondo, a foot shorter than him – Rondo yells back
Fire

One thing I will saw the NBA draft coverage was much better when it was on TNT or TBS. Also where was Hubie Brown this year to provide analysis?Jay Bilas always seems biased to me in his opinions. This was also the first year where the social media came into play. Any picks or trades was already posted on twitter 10-15 minutes before it was announced at the draft.
With the lockout pending, it will hurt for players like Benson not getting any burn due to summer league is closed. As long as he works hard and lets face it, I dont see anyone from the Hawks staff teaching him to get better it will have to come from himself as it does with most players. If you want to get better you will have to do it on your own. You can seek help from former players and they can show you things but at the end of the day it still comes down to you.
I saw a lot of Hilton Armstrong. I am a UCONN alum he has bad hands and Benson I can see is much better offensive player. He will have to get stronger and his upside will be a Marcus Camby lite 2.0

I don’t think the Hawks were serious about trading JSmith. However, I do believe they put it out there that he was available, but was asking for an arm and a leg for him. They knew teams would likely be turned off by their asking price. However, if a team was willing to bite and give them what they were asking, it would have been an offer they couldn’t, and likely wouldn’t have refused.
I remember a player who was very simular to Benson as far as being light in the pants and wirey, except he was listed at 6′9″. People questioned he ability to be effective at the NBA level because he was a light weight, but he turned out to be a very effective rebounder and inside scorer. His name was Louis Orr, and I believe he played for Detroit and Milwaukee.
How effective and productive he becomes will depend on LDrew and how he’s utilized. Even with his lack of weight, he can stll be effective if selectively matched up against OFF challenged centers like JNoah(Bulls), JAnthony(Heat), DJordan(Kings), TChandler(Mavericks)etc. Drew just has to use him in the same way he used JCollins, when matched up against physical centers.
It was amusing to hear LDrew once again postering to the media about the teams need to focus on DEF in order to be successful. He said basically the same thing last season, then proceded to throw DEF out the window by relying heavily on Bibby and Jamal, his 2 DEF liabilities.
So far, we don’t have any DEF liabilities under contract, especially in our backcourt, so he’ll finally have to live up to his boast. I hope we don’t resign Jamal, because Drew doesn’t know how to utilize him properly. Drew is so OFF minded that he’ll over utilize him at every opportunity, which will affect Teague. You know he’d play both Hinrich and Jamal ahead of Teague simply because they’re veterans and jump shooters.
I’m pretty sure we’ll add another shooter to our roster to replace Jamal, but will we add another PG? If not, then either Teague or Hinrich will come off the bench, and I’m betting Drew will go with the veteran Hinrich to start. For me, the biggest question is will Drew continue to start Marvin, or move JJ to SF.
Not having Bibby will improve our overall DEF and increase our fastbreak opportunities. Not having Jamal will also improve our overall DEF, and help Drew’s MOTION OFF become more effective by eliminating one of our 2 ISO dominant players. If we successfully add a shooter/scorer to our bench and we’ll end up with the following starting lineup options:
OC-AHorford
PF-JSmith
SF-MWilliams
SG-JJohnson
PF-KHinrich
or
OC-AHorford
PF-JSmith
SF-JJohnson
SG-KHinrich
PG-JTeague
A bench comprised of MWilliams or JTeague(depending on the starting lineup), KBenson, ZPachulia, Pape Sy, Shooter/scorer, MRolle and JCollins wouldn’t be bad. We’d definitely have size, versatility and DEF covered.

Another thing to keep in mind. Andre Miller’s contract is not fully guaranteed next season, while Felton is guaranteed to make $7.5 mil.
I dont know the rules of trading one person multiple times in the same offseason, but if the Nuggets want, I think they can waive Andre Miller, therefore saving even more salary cap space. Or they could unload him to another team looking to reduce salary, and maybe pick up another useful rotational player.
