Atlanta Hawks: NBA draft live blog (Update: Hawks select Oakland U. center Keith Benson)

The Hawks are not on the verge of being sold. Josh Smith has not been traded yet, unless Rick Sund made a deal right before I just saw him get some chicken here in the team’s offices.

This is the place to talk about these things and any other developments throughout the night.

Oh, yeah, there’s also the draft. The Hawks have the No. 48 pick.

UPDATE: The Hawks selected Oakland (Mich.) University center Keith Benson.

Here’s his NBADraft.net profile. DraftExpress has an interview with Benson.

Below are some excerpts from Benson’s teleconference with reporters. I’ll update the blog after Sund comes out to talk.

UPDATE II:

  • Sund said the Hawks explored trading into the first round but didn’t want to get into specifics about those discussions, including the reports about Smith and the Timberwolves.
  • Hawks assistant GM Dave Pendergraft said the team had Benson rated as early second round. He said there wasn’t much temptation to draft Josh Selby because several other players who were available were rated above Selby and those players also better fit the team’s needs.
  • Pendergraft said Benson’s strengths include his athleticism, shot-blocking ability and scoring touch. His weaknesses are his strength, though Pendergraft said Benson is “wiry strong” and could put on some more weight. “I don’t think he will ever be 250 or 260 but he could be 235 or maybe a little bit more,” Pendergraft said. “The trend in the league is is more long, wiry athletic types.”
  • Pendergraft said he’s not concerned with the level of competition Benson faced because Oakland played a tough non-conference schedule. “It’s not like he’s just going to be overwhelmed,” Pendergraft said.
  • Hawks coach Larry Drew said Benson can play power forward and center.

KEITH BENSON

(questions about strength)

“I’ve been out in Vegas working out with the weight trainer there and getting stronger. I’ve put on about five pounds since the Chicago event. I’ve been working out three times a week, working every day to get stronger.”

(potential to add weight)

“I think I have the frame to put on a lot of weight. My game will really increase once I put on that weight and some strength. I think I can put on 20 or more pounds.”

(what he knows about the Hawks, why he thinks he’s a good fit and which Hawks does he look forward to playing with)

“I’m looking forward to playing with Al Horford. He’s developed into the really good ‘bigs’ in this league. I like watching Joe Johnson. They are an athletic team and I think I can contribute to that. They have some youth and like to get up and down. I watched them a lot this year.”

(how much did he weight when he got to Oakland, and what does he weigh now)

“I was 190 when got to Oakland, and 6-9. I grew a couple inches. And I’m about 224 now.”

Speaking of JaVale McGee, the Wizards are going to be a problem this year athletically. John Wall has like four people who can be on the receiving end of his alley oops now.

Oh yeah, and I would think there’s a good chance Andray Blatche will be available. I’m not a huge fan but he is a productive if inconsistent big man who would probanly help as a bench player.

“One of my main objectives this summer is to take a very aggressive defensive approach”

For LD to say this in reference to drafting Keith Benson tells me that he is going to value shot blocking this year, which in turn tells me that Smoove is unlikely to be traded.

I hope he also is going to extend this aggressive approach to the perimeter, and that he realizes that Teague gives him the best chance to have an aggressive perimeter defense.

KenS, I have to think that Sund himself felt it necessary to sign 2 guys prior to them heading into their last year of a contract: Marvin and Al. IMO, those were 2 boneheaded mistakes to go along with so many others that this org decides. Why not match any Al offer once one comes in, a la Josh?

The point I am trying to make in a zillion words is that I don’t place the blame on the head coach to get those guys signed for ginormous contracts that they didn’t deserver. I do recall that Marvin, Zaza and Bibby were together making 23-25M as a unit, then came back and resigned for 17M. What he did was lock us in with these 3 for years going forward instead of making them earn their paycheck for being ‘journeyman’ players. Even if these guys left, you can’t tell me they weren’t replaceable.
While I wholeheartedly agree with you on the non-youth movement that plagues Larry to this day, I don’t give he nor Woodson much credit for forcing the GM to resign those 3 journeymen. Now if Drew throws up that lame excuse for not playing Teague now, fire that lifer quickly as he has an agenda against a guy who only makes us a better team.

I like the way Sund handled the Josh contract. I liked the JC1 deal. I liked the Teague draft selection. The trade to get JC2 was okay with me as well, ‘hoping’ that Sund had seen enough of Joe to have replacements ready to go. He screwed us on that thought. That would have been a bold move and the right move. Joe isn’t a leader he tries to tell us he is. This is coming from the guy who called Bibby in his prime.

Back to the previous decisions, Josh got a fair contract in the open market, and I think Al would have been the same way.
Marvin, Zaza, and Bibby would have had to prove themselves to earn their money.
It is just strange how comfortable Rick Sund is with another GM’s players and just doesn’t have foresight to have his own plan. It bothers me to watch him just enjoy the ride and take 3-4 years to make any changes of significance. Other than the JC1 deal, he has taken the easy road in every transaction he has been involved in….

- Retaining Joe, Marvin, Zaza and Bibby
- Making Josh bring back an offer
- Letting Josh Childress just walk away as a #6 pick….idiocy because we got squat for him and Sund doesn’t know what the MLE is anyway, so what benefit is that?
- Allowed Ernie Grunfeld to rake him over the coals to dump Bibby in his lap and give up 2 #1s….that ranks as #2 all-time to what Grunfeld did to Otis Smith with Arenas, but a joke nontheless
- swaps draft picks in 2010, only to sell another one to be cheap as cheap can be. The ASG and Sund have this thinking IMO of us having enough already when we really have guys who may not play another game outside of the jersey they wear in this city. Total incompetance.
- Signing of Etan, Randolph Morris, Collins, Super Mario, Damien Wilkins (2 years later than suggested by the entire city of Atlanta), Josh Powell ( who I thought might give us something except for the fact he has 2 good PFs ahead of him). These guys were ‘lightly’ coveted by the league.

Now how much is he listening to Drew re: personnel? I don’t think much, other than Drew telling him, I will start Bibby as long as he is here.

Astro, no, the Jazz wouldn’t do that deal, nor would Sund even have fleeting thought to offer such a deal either. But that would make us a better ‘team’ even though we still don’t have a true slot for Josh.
Does anyone really think he had a better year last year than before at that slot? Use him for his strengths, not what he and Marvin think they are.

Sund’s decisions have continued to just amaze me how he continues to keep a job. The ASG nor the GM have an original idea. I read about Pendergraft and trends in the league. This organization really just takes others ideas and uses them here.

It only takes one question to be answered: has Sund made us a better organization? The answer to that depends on what you consider to be a a success. Are we heading towards a championship, or are we just going to be a 13-26 team against teams .500 or better?

Again, I don’t think Sund has a creative thought in that dome. As Eddie Kendricks used to say…just ‘Keep on Truckin’.

Yesterday, I said I was only interested in dealing with Cleveland for their draft picks…I definitely wouldn’t even take their picks now….not much there for us.
Minnesota has an overlap of talent with Beasley, Williams and Love, that someone has to be moved IMO. Can you really depend on Millicic?
The Wizards picked up some nice pieces for Flip. They might be on the rise.
Will Philly and Milwaukee blow by us this year? Milwaukee got rid of some dead weight, Maggette and Salmons, and now have Stephen Jackson, and Tobias Harris and Udrih….I like what they are doing this year.

Sund has some work to do or he can watch others just blow right by us.

#UNINTENDED IRONY

Denver Post: The Nuggets have been fielding phone calls from teams interested in trading for forward Nikoloz Tskitishvili.

An NBA source said the ATLANTA Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers have inquired about Tskitishvili. The Nuggets are in search of a defensive-minded swingman, and the 7-foot- 1, 235-pound Tskitishvili could be used as bait.

Josh Smith for Tskitishvili? He’s 4″ longer than Blake Griffin, Zach and Motiejunas!

Al “Chuck Hayes” Horford has wanted someone to do his job down low for a while.

The Hawks had a lot of questions that they couldnt answer this season. Such as WHY WASNT TEAGUE STARTING ALL YEAR? The could have won the title this year. All they had to do to get a solid ANSWER to their questions was hire the ANSWER!!!! ALAN IVERSON SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED ON TO TAKE THE HAWKS INTO THE PROMISED LAND. Look if Dallas could get Peja Stajoikavich to find the fountain of youth and turn back the clock 7 years, imagine what Alan Iverson would have done for the Hawks. GOLD TROPHY, BABY!

STARTERS

PG – Teague
G – Johnson
F – Marvin
PF – Smith
C – Horford

BENCH

PG – Bibby
G – Jordan
F – Singleton
PF – Varnado
C – Zaza

( choose 3 of the 5 )

F/C – Benson
C – Collins
G – Sy
G/F – vet minimum guy
G/F – vet minimum guy

The Hawks could’ve definitely used guys like Jordan Crawford and Chris Singleton as guys to develop off the bench. Jordan would be used in an offensive role, while Singleton would be used for defense.

It irks me that we’re going to be in the same situation next year, with the Hawks simply letting Hinrich’s contract fall off the books, with nothing but vet minimum guys to fill out the roster.

I don’t expect much from Benson his first year nor the 2nd maybe looking for something in Year 3 and 4 with 5 we hope for at least a serviceable big if he became better than that I’ll be surprised.

I’d still like it if we could pick up David West and Jason Thompson get rid of Jamal somehow get rid of Marvin, but then we’d need another SF we got Wilkins I know, but need a 3rd stringer.

Hawks SOLD!

Ian Thompson of CNN-SI reported yesterday that The Hawks are on the verge of being SOLD! He is on 790 AM right now and he is standing hard behind his story. He has two NBA Insiders as his source.

He said the terms have been agreed to, but The ASKG are not far along enough in this process to validate this truth. The sale is eminent and it will happen soon. The new CBA will hold fast to a hard cap, mainly because only 3 of 20 teams are making money, while the other 17 teams are losing money.

These 3 teams can not continue to front load their teams to the detriment of all others. You can not have teams like Miami with 3 super stars. These stars have to play on other teams in smaller markets to sustain the entire NBA. The lowest team had a 44M payroll while The Lakers had a payroll of 110M. That can’t continue to happen going forward.

The new owners of The Hawks will not be disclosed until the contracts are signed. The reason Josh was not traded to Minny had much to do with this pending sale as it did anything else. The new owners have a NEW vision to make the Hawks competitive and apparently Josh is a HUGE part of that vision.

I saw where FINALLY, FINALLY, Patrick Ewing is going to get an interview for a head coaching job. I applaud Detroit. I think Pat is as good as some that have come through the ranks and he has paid his dues. Going back before Woody, I always wanted Abdul-Jabbar to come here and take over the Hawks…give me someone that has been there! The guys that come in here have no idea how to sustain any success.
I have recently wanted Ewing to come here and let us know what he has taught Dwight and get in on some of the Magic’s success.

I’m not disputing anything you are saying;
however, let me clue you in on some of the labor dispute
*in-fighting amongst the owners.

There are two groups: *[owners]

(1) this group follows whatever Stern wants.
*(in a way Stern is right in this battle) -I’ll explain in a moment-

(2) this group we’ll call the renegades.
(younger group, Cuban, etc.)

Stern’s group understands that a lock-out will severely damage
the league when the NBA popularity is at an all-time high.

The 2nd group has been hit hard by the economy & wants to
Make Money Off Their Investment / Franchise !

**Prior to the recession / downturn / depression / whatever we’re
currently in…..owners were content to just play with their hobby
while their equity grew.

***Now these new *[renegades / my word] want to make money
off their franchise rather than just growing value.
-OR-
Not bleed money, r e ASG.

Stern is trying to bring the younger owners in line,
rather than risk a lock-out, which would de-value
the NBA brand.
Also he sees that the NFL went down a barren path,
for no good reason. *[lock-out / union decertification / etc]

So the whole lockout thing is simply an internal struggle
between the owners, with the young guns holding the majority.

Drmaryb got too much good stuff LOL!

I can’t argue about all the bad contracts the Hawks have signed and all the bad moves made. The Hawks turned down an opportunity to go into rebuild mode by overpaying Joe.

So now the only thing worth talking about is what the Hawks can do to compete for a championship this year.

LD

Needs to find consistency with his rotations and make better adjustment in the playoffs.

Sund

Needs to replace Etan, Powell and Collins. The latter is too old and slow to be effective again next season. The formed just weren’t effective to begin with. I respect Etan’s activism but I want to win not save the world.

Joe

Needs to earn his contract by coming into camp in the best shape of his life. If he reports at 230 he’s going to have a good season.

Marvin

Needs to drop weight and strengthen his core. If be tries to continue at his current weight he will be Larry Johnson.

Josh

Needs to work with a sports psychologist and get his mental game together. Stop being jealous of Joe’s contract and go earn your own max deal. Come back ready to dominate inside and run with Teague.

Kirk

Needs to work on flexibility to avoid injury in a contract year. A journeyman who plays the right way and leads with hustle by example.

Teague

Needs to get some game with females so he doesn’t have to make any more headlines. Seriosly dude if you just have some self confidence their are plenty of ladies who want it.

Al

Man the F up. You are an all NBA center. You are nowhere near the best power forward on you team. Take off the diaper and ask Dwight where he gets his roids. No piss testing during a lockout.

KEVINM-What I don’t understand is why Sund let the market dictate JSmith contract value, but for whatever reason he didn’t take the same approach with Bibby and Marvin, which would have made more sense. I think resigning Bibby and Marvin was primarily to let Woodson have what he wanted in his quest for a new contract. Resigning Horford, Zaza and JJ was primarily a management decision.

Trading Bibby and letting Jamal walk was/is exclusively a management decision. There’s absolutely no way on earth Drew would part with Bibby or Jamal if it was up to him. Sund has set it up where Drew has no other choice but to change his OFF 1st philosophy and focus on DEF. And this time it’ll be more than just lip service on his part, since there is no longer any total DEF liabilities on the team.

We’re now simular to the Bulls in that we’ll have to win more with DEF than OFF, although we’ll still have more OFF firepower than they do. Because of financial constraits, and the inability to trade certain over priced veterans, Sund and the ASG will require Drew to save his job by basically getting better results out of what amounts to the same team he had last yr, especially the core.

If LDrew takes a more common sense approach, becomes more proactive in dealing with players, and doesn’t allow his personal issues and bias’ to get in the way, it can certainly be done. For the 1st time in the last 7yrs, we’ll have a back court rotation that can provide a solid perimeter DEF that can actually help our frontline rotation(interior DEF).

In the past, our frontline defenders were required to provide not only interior DEF, but come out on the perimeter and help cover for 2 of our extremely sorry excuses for perimeter defenders. I can’t wait to see the overall OFF/DEF impact Teague and Hinrich will have on the team, particularily our interior DEF.

Drew have to be more proactive, rather than reactive, about JSmith’s imaturity, shot selection and decision making. Complaining and talking to him behind closed doors will no longer get it done. He’ll also have to stop making excuses for not giving rookies and younger players like JTeague, Pape Sy, and now Benson, a legitimate chance to show what they can do.

I’m really looking forward to the upcoming season, and I won’t spend the rest of the off season whinning, crying and complaining about who we didn’t draft, shoulda coulda drafted, or who we need to trade or trade for.
