OBRIEN-Are you saying LDrew should continue giving Sy the Teague treatment and just ignore him because of the extremely limited mins he played last yr. Based on that, no rookie would ever get to play, since 32mins are more than anyone coming out of college has played on this level. Maybe you only saw him play 32mins, but I saw him play a couple of summer league as well as D-league gms.
Tell me, exactly how much does one need to see of a player to assess his willingness and ability to play DEF? There’s certainly no shortage of individuals who are convinced that certain 2nd rd college players with (0)zero experience will be successful. And I didn’t say he deserves regular playing time. I said his unique size/skill combination demands he be given an early chance to show what he can do.
We’ve frequently seen fans get excited over particular college or international players after watching short highlight clips. Your attitude towards Pape Sy is no different than the one LDrew and many fans had towards JTeague, which kept his anchored to the bench.
NAJEH-Like AHorford, Horace Grant had a very effective midrange jumpshot. And David Robinson also developed a very effective short range jumper. Offensively, Horford is more versatile than Josh, but Josh is more versatile defensively. With Howard in the middle, we wouldn’t need Josh’s shot blocking or help DEF as much as we do now.
While Josh is a far far better post up player than jump shooter, who would you rather have posting up, Josh or Dwight? When teams double or triple team Dwight and he passes out, who would you rather have taking that outside shot, Al or Josh? I still say Horford is a better fit with Howard than Josh.

I don’t believe a whole lot of what I’m seeing on the blog, but maybe I’m in a weird mood…..Shaq was injured a LOT this season….that’s why a team that wants to win did not trade for him. Marvin gives the impression he doesn’t want to step up, and I got that from him in an interview I saw…..If you don’t want to win go away….(however, in a MOTIVATED situation) he can score and rebound. Joe Johnson can be a fantastic player…..but apparently still not integrated with the team….why?
Josh…..fantastically gifted, hope his injuries are fully healed…..but still a crummy attitude at times, and this HAS COST the team. I think you could trade Josh. Jamal….creative scoring machine but moody, expensive….I like to watch him…keep him.
Now, the biggest beef I have……I don’t like Dwight Howard. He seems arrogant and immature, demanding, and he uses his elbows like weapons. (Obviously, he is a great player in many respects). However, once the league begins calling the fouls Howard racks up being aggressive and doesn’t give him 8 fouls a game, he’s going to be on the bench a lot more. I think he’s’ really, REALLY good……just don’t care for the attitude……
And having watched Mark Jackson make either obvious comments or off the point comments for years on TV makes me think he’ll miss the mark as coach……he’s wrong on a lot of stuff I’ve been watching with my own eyes…plus HE seems to have a ‘tude as well…….
My take…..not very creative, just reactive…….still think this team (with Jamal) could have won it all…..remember we were ahead in game 5 in Chicago……

Buddy Grizzard ,
I see you haven’t stopped toting your torch and pitchfork around,
.
I hate to break it to you, but LD is no lameduck coach. If he was, he’d be fired already. How do some of y’all just NOT get it?
The problem is, was, and will always be the ASG. They promoted the guy. There is ZERO talk about him being fired. A lame duck coach is a guy who is just waiting to be let go. Do you see these clowns letting him go? Oh don’t get me wrong, we can hope until the cows come home.
But I REPEAT, if the ASG wanted a high caliber coach THEY WOULD HAVE HIRED ONE ALREADY . Did they not have several discussions wit Avery Johnson last summer? It was reported in several articles.
Dude, I realize it may be easier to hate on the coach, but this is not unlike being angry about how crappy a particular type of car is, while consistently ignoring the fact that the company manufacturing the car insists on producing a faulty product over and over.
But hey…I realize it’s easier to stick pincushions into one voodoo doll instead of seven…
Unless the sale of the Thrasher turns out to be a huge boon, you can expect more foolishness like your love-to-hate relationship with the head coach. That, and more bad contracts and poopy end-of-the-bench free agent signings.

If this trade goes through it will be a stab in the Atlanta fanbase heart that this was all we could get for Smoove and whoever called it the Library is exactly what it will be next season…

“And I didn’t say he deserves regular playing time. I said his unique size/skill combination demands he be given an early chance to show what he can do. ”
Sy should be given every opportunity in training camp and preseason to show that he can play in the NBA. Hopefully LD gives him that opportunity. He did look like he could be an NBA player during the very few minutes he played in the regular season.
But it would be foolish for Sund to go into this season penciling him in for a significant role when he hasn’t proven anything yet. Teague’s situation is different since he has proven in the regular season and the playoffs, time and time again, that he plays well enough to start when given minutes. Sy, through no fault of his own, hasn’t proven this yet. Sund should approach this offseason looking at any meaningful contributions from Sy this season as icing on the cake, and acquire a fourth guard or swingman accordingly. If Sy proves that he can play, then the Hawks have a nice little surplus in the back court that they can use to make a trade to fill other needs.

Noam Schiller, Hardwood Paroxysm: Chandler Parsons and Toni Kukoc. This is obviously a huge stretch — Parsons will never be anywhere near the player Kukoc was. But I can see Parsons thriving in the NBA in a similar role — heady point forward who comes off the bench, runs a little offense, and does a little bit of everything. He’ll be a second-round steal.

Najeh,
Interesting to see the Spurs interested in breaking up their core, just like the Hawks. Maybe Rick Sund was right. The Hawks are just like the Spurs.
Ken S,
I agree with Najeh’s 9:53 post.
All I’m saying is don’t count on Sy to be a solid rotational player. Hopefully, LD will give him the opportunity, and hopefully Sy will be able to take advantage of that opportunity.
But the fact remains that he was picked 53rd last year. Therefore, anything we get from him should be gravy, not expected.

If that Orlando trade is true it really wouldn’t surprise me. An organization that would give a guy that don’t want to be “the man” and isn’t “the man” $120M+, would actually do this deal. They would actually trade their best talent on the team to a team within their division, making that team incredible and making their own team worse!
Only the ASG, only Sund, only in Atlanta.

Guys,
In all the years the ASG have owned the Hawks, what are the big moves they have made?
1) SNt for JJ 2) Trading for Bibby and 3) Trading for Jamal.
How many rumors have there been? Alot. Therefore, until I hear it from a reliable source, I will ignore all alleged “moves” the Hawks have made.
Plus it would take days (if not weeks) for Rick and the ASG to come to a consensus.

For curiosity measures, if Minnesota actually did offer the #2 pick to every team in the league, what did Sund respond with? Would he have just blown off an interest before a conversation even got to a level of seriousness? I don’t think our org has any interest in blending young talent with the experienced vets. I gotta feeling that Sund thinks we are only a piece away from contending.

Well if the phantom trade, which is now being called dead, which was probably never alive, were to happen, we would save about 6 or 7m this season, just enough to sign Jamal. Hmmm…..
And the report was we receive the Mavs 26th pick as well, so the lineup would have been:
C – Haywood/ZaZa
PF – Al/Anderson/Rolle
SF – JJ/Sy/Wilkens?
SG – Jamal/Teague
PG – Jameer/Beaubois
Can you win a championship with that roster? Probably not. But since “where all jumpshooters now”, that is def. a jump shooting lineup and bench.
Boy, this Josh talk is really heating up – Raptors, Nets, Celts, Lakers, Rockets etc.
We probably keep Josh. But I’m sure Otis wants him in Orlando or he’s toast when Dwight bolts. Josh may be the one guy that could keep Dwight in Orlando.
And Orlando would love that trade – Orlando blogs calling it the best trade ever for them.
Front court: Howard/Josh/Bass rotation. Scary.
One Orlando (columnist? I think so) called that the best defensive 5 -4 combo of all time!
Hedo at the 3
Arenas/Hinrich/Duhon at PG
Reddick/Q Richardson at the 2

I hope Atl know that if that trade happened, CPaul or Steve Nash would be only 2-3 months away from joining the Magic via trade. With a line up like that you would only need a 2-3 who can shoot lights out and create shots. I remember years ago Gilbert saying how much he would love to play with Josh. That deal happens, and I have to subscribe to League Pass. Because I would find it very hard to be as passionate about Hawks basketball when they’ve just traded their biggest impact player on the defensive end for 3/4 players who weaknesses are on the defensive end. That’s saying forget the defense we’re going to just play horse for 82 games and see what happens.

“A DHoward trade would work salary wise if we traded JSmith…” – Ken S.
Hold up right there sir. Probably the only chance we have to ever see DH in a Hawks uniform is if he decides to come home to Atlanta and compete for a championship on the same roster with his childhood friend Josh. Josh’s best man coming to Atlanta also might be the only way we keep Josh. That story says Orlando is one of Josh’s preferred destinations, but Orlando has no assets, only liabilities, thanks to the work of the worst GM in the NBA, Otis Smith.
Therefore Josh isn’t going to Orlando. If they want to play together, they have to do it here. Atlanta, in the meantime, has assets it can send out for Dwight. If we trade All-NBA Al and Joe Johnson for Dwight and Arenas, we’re giving them two All-Stars for one and taking their worst contract off their hands. That is the best offer Orlando is likely to get. They may hate trading Dwight to a division rival, but if Dwight goes to Otis and says make it happen or I walk as a free agent, it will happen. Can the Hawks contend with:
C: Dwight Howard
PF: Josh Smith
SF: Marvin Williams
SG: Kirk Hinrich
PG: Jeff Teague

“Joe or Josh who would you trade if you could get the same value for both?” – RealSquawk
Joe in a heartbeat. Josh has big balls. Joe has no balls. All-NBA Al has some Sunmaid raisins tucked away in that diaper somewhere.

“Offensively, Horford is more versatile than Josh, but Josh is more versatile defensively.” – Ken S.
Can’t agree with you here. Horford is fairly one-dimensional offensively. His game is limited to the long two (which he shoots for the best percentage of any player in the league) and mostly put-backs. Josh is not as good a shooter as Al, but he shot a better percentage from three during the regular season than Joe Johnson, so he wasn’t horrible (his shot abandoned him in the playoffs obviously). Plus Josh has a post-up game, which Al doesn’t.
“Roddy B and Teague are electric youngsters…” – JoJo
Roddy B didn’t get off the bench in the playoffs. That would be a franchise-wrecking trade for the Hawks. Why do we need three point guards? Ryan Anderson and Daniel Orton are garbage. Brendan Haywood is an injury waiting to happen. Why would we trade for Jameer, who can’t guard anybody, when we already have Teague?

Because the ASG are idiots that’s why they would trade J-smoove to a division rival.
Honestly just look at Josh when he’s playing the opposing team respects him on both sides of the court except when he’s taking the jumpers, but I bet in about 2 more years working on that jumper J-smoove will be well respected.
Still J-smoove for Ryan Anderson, Jammer, and another G WHY! when you already have Teague the guy could be the next big thing, but the idiot ASG always and forever doing something to F it up.
If you’re trading Josh you get someone like Dwight Howard back in return even though I don’t suggest doing that cause the only way Dwight stays here is if J-smoove is here trade away Joe Johnson to Chicago for their picks and some players like Brewer and Deng.
