I’m afraid Reggie may want more money than we’re willing to give. But if we can dump Marvin…..

“Larry forced Josh’ perimeter game on us.” – KevinM

I’m glad people understand this. Yes, Josh is immature and emotional. But he probably thinks he was just doing what he was asked to do. Lame Duck’s offense created all those jump shots, and in the regular season Josh shot better than Joe from range. Don’t make him feel like a scapegoat, fix the damn offense and let Josh know that we want him in the post and we’re going to GET HIM THE BALL and get him on an All-Star team. We’re about to lose our best player because of the incompetent organizational culture of the ASG.

Buddy,

It’s not entirely LD’s fault. Keep in mind that LD said he would call plays for Josh to be in the post, but soomehow Josh would still end up on the perimeter.

And shouldn’t Josh be smart enough to realize as the season went along (and in the playoffs) that his shooting percentages from 17+ feet was on the decline, so cut down on the jumpers? But he continued to throw them up.

Didnt he realize there was a reason teams would leave him open on the perimeter?

Not taking away the blame on Josh, but I didn’t see him really start jacking up jumpers until after the all star game when he got snubbed over joe johnson who in my opinion did not deserve to be anywhere near that game.

If Larry forced Josh to the perimeter, then Larry is a pathological liar. If you listen to his pre-season press conferences, and read his interviews, it was all about Josh living in the post. During the season, he spoke repeatedly of Josh’s need to get in the post. I’m not going to dig up the quotes etc, I have before, but it’s there to look at.

And in an article on trading Josh, it talks about Scola, Lee and a 1st pick, or Scola, Hill and a 1st pick. I understand we are beginning to get “scared” about losing Josh in Free Agency. But I don’t know if either of those scenarios make us a better team.

Scola is older, not a great rebounder or blocked shot presence. Lee or Hill have showed me nothing. Depends on the first pick I guess.

Now if the Nets want to send us Brook Lopez or DeRon Williams or somebody, I’m all ears. Brook is soft, but he is still learning the game.

Josh + Marvin for DeRon if Deron agrees to an extension with us? Tempting, very tempting.

Orlando – Bass, Anderson, Duhon and draft picks? Maybe, but I wouldn’t ever want to play against a frontline consisting of Dwight and Josh. Ever.

We need to get creative and send a package to Orlando for Dwight. Al and JJ straight up for Dwight? Two All Stars for 1 All NBA player.

Again, a frontline of Josh and Dwight would just be sick

A lineup of:

Dwight
Josh
Marvin
Hinrich
Teague

Could probably do some serious damage in this League. And Dwight is going to be a force in the League for at least 10 more years. The guy is a gymaholic

I swear that there is no way in hell that we will trade Josh Smith to the Magic, C’s or Nets. They will lose rest of the fans we got, I know that if somebody has to go, that has to be Joe. Send him to Chicago.

That’s my thing SteveW we need to get Dwight Here don’t let him go to L.A I’m almost certain if Dwight gets to L.A J-smoove will follow. Imagine Kobe Bryant, J-smoove, Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard combo plus a Chris Paul maybe at PG. That’s a scary line-up that sends chills through the body.

BOYCOTT THE HAWKS!
BOYCOTT PHILIPS ARENA!
Please do not attend any event at Philips Arena. The Hawks are owned by The Atlanta Spirit Group, who also operate the Arena. Levenson, Gearon, Seydel, et al, destroyed the Atlanta Thrashers for their own personal gain. ESPN recently rated them as the most dishonest owners of sports franchises. They are scoundrels and should be shunned and considered as pariahs in the community. They should be economically destroyed so they are forced to sell the Hawks.

Then again though being realistic Dwight already said he doesn’t like to be in the shadow of anyone. So that might not happen. To be real I honestly think the Dwight Sweepstakes is between Orlando, ATL(if they just try, and probably Dallas. In these places Dwight would be the star except in Dallas, but he won’t be behind Dirk, but then again the Dallas trade happens if their willing to get rid of B. haywood and Tyson.

Personally, I don’t think another team can come up with a better trade scenario for Dwight than JJ and Al.

Two All Stars?

Locked in?

One 24, the other 30?

Who does Dallas offer? Haywood and Tyson? Jones? Butler and Barea are not under contract, and Kidd, Marion and Terry are in their mid 30’s or older.

LA – Bynum and Odom? Bynum, bad knees, hurt – Odom getting older. Gasol (old), Bynum, and Odom?

New Jersey might could offer Deron and Lopez – but then he has nobody to play around him. No chance of a Championship until he’s at least 30 there, and that’s if they draft well.

Are people serious about Hilton Armstrong? Dude is not a good basketball player. He was out of the league like two years ago for a reason. He is not some young guy that is going to improve. He is what he is at this point and its not very good. Its an article where teammates talk about his poor work ethic. Go back to his Uconn days. He didnt really play until his last year because of a poor work ethic and bad attitude. Just say no to Hilton Armstrong.

SteveW, those 2 all-stars we have? We might be seeing their all-star reign end this year…..you have Al moving to the 4, so he shouldn’t be looked at as a C.
Joe was not exactly consistent last year.

If you can get Dwight for 2 ‘marginal’ all-stars, you do that deal of course. And like I said earlier, if you put Dwight with Josh? You have a very good defensive backline. If we are going to offer Josh to ‘Otis my man’, then we better be ripping them off, because we are going to struggle against them….

Sy+Horford……heck of a tag……….asking for Bass and draft picks is not rebuilding…it is adding more pieces to our team than ORL can add to that team, and make us a deeper team, because we may have had the worse bench in the playoffs. So not a rebuild, its a re-org and adding multiple pieces for one player who played too much on the perimeter last year.

Steve W,

I think the only deal Orlando would make is JJ and Al for Arenas and Howard.

JJ has 5 years, $107 mil left on his contract. The only teams who might take him this offseason is Nets (to try and keep Deron Williams) and Minny (to pair with Rubio). Both teams have salary cap space, but Hawks would not get equal value.

Ajinca was a call Granddad and I made years ago. Still might be a good project, as is the other french center who surprised everyone for the Mavericks.

We’re not talking starting center here. Yes someone to take Etan’s slot who can hopefully improve or find a niche. Your 12th or 13th man at best. Hopefully the other slots will be filled with the quality you’re whining about.

OB, no way the ASG takes on Arenas’ contract. It is a bad one, and even though you save almost 50M long term vs. the Joe deal, I don’t see it though.
I’m not totally against it though. Arenas has good offense, just not sure how much offense. But if it gets you Dwight, go get him…
Arenas/Hindrich(paired up again!)/Dwight/Josh/newcomer…

No chance 2 division rivals makes such a mega deal.

IMUS, cp,

I am the first to acknowlegde that Hilton has an horrible rep and is a guy who never worked on his game and is a draft bust BUT:

During the ORL series Hilton showed a marked improvement following a bad first showing, frustrating Howard and making a pretty good emulation of Collins’ post defense.

He has the body and some skills to be a contributor and maybe he has finally matured and is ready to change is ways.

Long shot, but I would definitively invite him for training camp and would get Collins to work with him intensively.

Orlando is not going to trade Dwight inside the conference UNLESS: Al and Joe are the package because both of their contracts may be reduced in the new CBA.The rabid bark madley is only half way to the question because IF the ASG gets Dwight and Josh, Chris Paul will come.

Imagine the box office, paraphanalia and advert revenue spike! Now the franchise has a value that an astute owner(s) can and will value in an arms length sales transaction. The NBA and their media partners have a Big 3 vs Big 3 rivalry in two major media markets- Atlanta and Miami- and the home town heroes story creates a compelling sidebar that replaces the rancor over ” The Decision”.

And with Chris Paul you get the added benifit of major community involvement efforts that will create even more goodwill for the franchise and the city.

Could it happen, sure; will it happen- ?????!

Dreams can come true…

I’ve always thought an Atlanta All Stars would be a compelling team to market. Georgia has produced alot of quality NBA talent over the years.

What about the old AAU dream team Dwight, Rondo, Josh…even bring Randolph back just for fun since we wouldn’t need him.

Josh in the Post

June 21st, 2011

Josh Smith played close to 39 minutes per game against Chicago. He took 1 3 point shot every 25 minutes. His long jumpers came mostly on low shot shot clocks

OR when he was playing against bigger guys like Boozer. Stop trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.
We know how to play Josh we get him in transition and posting up guys like Deng and Carmelo and who knows maybe he can do what Marion did to Lebron.

I appreciate Josh’s minutes, but he absolutely has no purpose on the perimeter. It’s just bad offense…which isn’t his fault. A good coach and PG should play to his strengths – transition, the post and even mid-range. He needs that mid-range shot, but by no means does that justify 3 pt attempts.

I played PG in college. I could shoot 3’s in practice…yet I was smart enough to get it to the true shooters on the team when it counted. I had no 3 pt attempts in the game. I stayed within the offense. It’s that simple. No excuse.

Marvin Williams in the Post

June 21st, 2011
1:42 pm

anybody got the stat where Marvin is guarded by smaller 6′5 2 guard guys?
Pretty sure Malcolm Thomas and Williams would dominate Bibby/Chalmers whatever Miami’s backups are.

People need to start realizing its not all about starters. A lot of matchups come up in a game whether it be Josh playing the 4 and all of a sudden there’s a switch or Al wants to guard Boozer and Smith’s left guarding Noah.
or C.J. Watson versus Kirk Hinrich or Marvin Williams or Malcolm Thomas off the bench.

That’s why the Dwight Howard model has failed. The Magic have failed to surround him with anything but 3 point shooters and fail to put him in position to be a luxury instead of a necessity.

Dirk going 0 for 10 in the 1st half or what have you not and they were still beating the Heat. That’s the difference.
Orlando will most likely never win without playing Dwight with another PF-C. Ryan Anderson is not going to get it done. Might as well play Dwight at the 4 ala what we did with Horford and let him and the other center just attack attack and bum rush the rebounds.

Why does Josh Smith have a list of preferred teams for a trade? He has NO leverage to say where he would prefer to be traded. None. His list is about as meaningful as my list of women I’d leave my wife to be with. It is essentially a fantasy with no bases in reality. “I honestly hope there is no truth to the rumors you need to get rid of the guy that’s paid the most. He was the one that was brought back in hoping to reach the promise land(NBA Finals).

Honestly if you brake the bank on someone they should be the first person looked at and last just like what happened in the playoffs Joe vanished and his best excuse I kept getting double teamed. Josh and other players got doubled a lot, but I didn’t see them complain about it afterwards well Josh did, but he got back and kept trying to do his thing.

Not only that go back and look at the playoffs videos look at the parts where Josh exits the game and see what the hawks look like without him. I’m telling you whatever defense we had with Josh if we trade him that’s gone.”

I don’t disagree with any of this really, just passing along that information that Smoove is supposedly being shopped.

Like I have said many times before, I am not opposed to trading Smoove, but if they do, they better get back a player of equal caliber and someone who can replace his defensive impact. Replace him with a non-defender and this team will be rated in the 20s defensively next season.

I think he has more value than Zaza would at this stage in their careers.”

I don’t necessarily disagree with this either… just pointing out that in a typical year the consensus 3rd best player in the draft isn’t going to have a Zaza floor. To me Kanter is a lot like Al Horford.

“Why does Josh Smith have a list of preferred teams for a trade? ”

Wojnarowski was quoting an anonymous insider in that article. This is more similar to you hanging out with your friends and talking about which women you think are fine, that friend anonymously passing the information on to TMZ saying those are the women for whom you’d leave your wife, and TMZ then republishing that information in the most uninteresting TMZ story ever (no offense). In other words, even if Smoove doesn’t have leverage to force a trade to a given place it doesn’t mean he couldn’t have told a friend at some point that hey, I’d rather play in Houston than Winnipeg.

KevinM

June 21st, 2011

Najeh, yes I agree that Kanter is being compared to Al, but I think he is a better post presence than Al? If you are pairing him with Al, you have lots of duplication. He has better size than Al, and judging from the measureables, he appears to have better size than Al.
I don’t think we can go wrong but the main reason to go to a draft pick is exactly like the rumors to Josh; gaining cap relief.
I agree with everyone here; we lose Josh, we lose a lot of our defense.
Not that we prefer Kanter for less defense, but there is much needed in our lineup, and I think some new faces would be the first steps.
But again, bringing in youth doesn’t go well with Larry’s way of thinking…we saw that last year.
So, the only approach we pursue is to get more veteran help here, and that might mean getting more experienced. So going in with only a 2nd rounder and lots of questions, if we don’t move a captain or 2, we are basically Larry at least gives us Teague in the starting lineup. I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up moving Teague.
