To hear Rick Sund and Dave Pendergraft talk today, the Hawks have changed their thinking when it comes to second-round draft picks.
Don’t expect the Hawks to draft another international project and either leave him playing overseas (Sergey Gladyr) or banish him to the far end of the bench/D-League (Pape Sy). More likely they will target a collegiate senior and, Pendergraft says, they expect to buck the odds and find a useful player at No. 48.
“We are not approaching this like there is luck involved,” he said. “We are approaching it like, ‘This is our pick and somebody we expect to make our team.’ And hopefully, if there is an injury, you can plug [the rookie] in there and they will be able to help.”
Perhaps more significantly, the Hawks might finally be to the point where there doesn’t have to be an injury to to the rotation guys for young guys to play. Sure, that might happen by necessity with just seven players under (guaranteed) contract next season and no financial flexibility (under the current CBA), but it still would represent a change in direction for the organization.
Asked if there is room on the roster for a promising second-round pick to get minutes, Pendergraft said:”What you have to weigh is, if we take a collegiate player and he is put in the same situation as Josh Powell or Etan Thomas, could they do as well or better?”
The other question, of course, is if the coach would play a rookie who is as good as those guys, but one thing at a time.
Sund said the Hawks are likely to draft the best available talent.
“It’s safe to say that, but I’m not going to commit to it,” he said. “I think you look at it as a need that you have and the best talent and then you equate it. Is that talent significantly better than the need? If it’s close, you take the need.”
What do the Hawks need?
“We would like to get a little tougher,” Sund said. “Hinrich helped us in that area and that kind of trickled down to some of the other players. I always like shooting. Size, rebounding. All of those things. Maybe not one is more important than the other.”
What skills tend to translate best from college to pro?
“People that rebound in college generally rebound in the NBA, even if they don’t make it for [the long term],” Sund said. “If you are a good rebounder in college, generally a good rebounder at professional level. Or if you are a good shooter. Some guys may be good shooters but they need more time to get it off.”
The Hawks aren’t releasing the names of the prospects they bring in for workouts. Sund’s explanation was that the workouts are not as significant since the Hawks don’t have a first-round pick. He said the players the team invited to Atlanta are simply those the Hawks didn’t get a chance to see at one of the three group workouts.
Pendergraft said the Hawks invited about 20 players. Most are college seniors and only three or four prospects are centers/power forwards.
“There’s probably been more swing players than ‘bigs’ simply because of supply and demand,” Pendergraft said. “There are not a lot of big guys.”
OK, blog people, take those clues provided by Sund and Pendergraft (college senior, tough rebounder or good shooter) and look at the list of prospects and see if you can narrow down the Hawks’ potential draftees.
Sund has hit on some value in the second-round before: He got both Earl Watson and Bobby Simmons in the 2000 draft for Seattle (and then traded Simmons for Predrag Drobnjak).
“The process in the second round, [since] the percentages aren’t all that high, is patience,” Sund said. “We ask a couple different questions. Does he have one NBA skill? Another is, does he have size? Or is there a player that is a little bit opposite of ‘Do they one NBA skill?’ and do they have multiple skills? A lot of those guys, like Bobby Simmons, are jacks-of-all-trades; they do a lot of things good but nothing necessarily great. Those players do have an opportunity to make it as—and I’m using this in a positive way—to have more of a journeyman status over the years.”

drmaryb, it was good to see dallas win i have to say was somewhat suprised. think you will see more teams employ zone defense against miami like dallas did.I actually think Atlanta is somewhere at the crossroads right now with the franchise it is going to have to really make a strong showing next year in the playoofs and be a top 3 team next year to make believer out of fans

Jamal may go to Miami for a chance to win a title @ a discount, just to stick it to the Hawks. He’ll probably want a minimum of 6M though, I don’t think the Heat can swing that price tag though.
If Jamal can’t get a good deal with the Hawks, he may as well start his Ring crusade and float from team to team each year.

drmaryb,
I think the heat got far out talenting teams with lebron and wade.. but the east is getting better, teams deeper, and as we have just seen, a deep team witha talented star can and will beat the heat… chicago, Atlanta, NY, sixers, will all be better…. and the celts are not going anywhere either
The heat biggest problem I think is that lebron and wade are very similar players in that they both need the ball to be at their best… their skills and style of play when playing together tends to stagnate their offense. How much can miami improve? they can keep adding players and I think those players will be under utilized… we saw it with guys like mike miller, and even bibby to an extent, and heck even bosh…. the question is. can role players really be at their best playing with wade and lebron together?

“Why people keep saying ellis play no defense is absurd to me, the guy AVG 2 steals a game.”
There’s a lot more to defense than steals and blocks. Any athletic player can gamble on every pass and rack up steals while giving up a ton of points every time they don’t manage to get in the passing lane in time. The Warriors suck at team defense and Ellis sucks at individual defense.

Rumors:
Josh will be used to acquire a starting Post player.
[a legit Center] one who Rebounds & Defends.
I mentioned before the Mcgee + draft pick rumor.
Another interesting Rumor:
Josh to Chicago for Boozer & Asik.
It is unclear if Thibs would trade Asik.
The alternative would be Boozer + the Bulls two 1st round picks. (28, 30)
Chi wants to unload Boozer ! *[contract] bad play-off performance.
Interestingly, the same source, mentioned the exact same trade;
ONLY…*Joe instead of Josh.
If we could pry Asic away + the two picks (28 & 30) I would prefer the latter.
[sending Joe rather than Josh]

The Wolves want McGee but the Wiz dont want to move him. I dont think the Hawks have the pieces to aquire him. Khan might give up a lot to get McGee. Wall, Derrick Wiiliams, Nick Young, and Jordan Crawford would be a nice set of young players. They just need a better coach.

If we trading Josh all I’m saying is you get someone back that’s just as good or better that would mean a CP3, Deron Williams, Lebron(don’t want), or Dwight honestly we got a great chance at Dwight. I don’t think anyone realizes it, but if Josh goes away that chance is shattered.

I just don’t see how some of you continue to think these teams will be willing to give up talented young centers for players other teams want to get rid of. And I don’t see the Hawks trading Josh, or any other player of value, for CBoozer and his contract, even if Asik is included. We already have DEF issues and trading for Boozer would only make it worse.
He’s certainly no more productive than Josh offensively, isn’t in his class defensively, and would costs more. It would make more sense financially, talent and need wise, to try and work out a trade for BHeywood, or a sign and trade for Dalembert.
Unlike Asik, they are proven rebounders and defenders, and both would be a lot cheaper to acquire than a Boozer/Asik combo. We’d have to give up a lot more to match Boozer and Asik’s salaries than we would to acquire either Heywood or Dalembert. Plus, with Dalembert or Heywood, we won’t have to add an extra player, and DEF liability.
I’d steer clear of anything that involves the Bulls and Boozer.

Now on to the Hawks. SMH at some of the ideas being floated on this board. With the proven record of the ASG; the pending NBA lockout and the general attitude about professional basketball here in a hard core college football town, I am not filled with a lot of warm fuzzies about the Hawks’ future right now. Even with three straight playoff appearences; a .500 record in the playoffs this year with a rookie head coach and the potential decline of some of the Eastern Conference’s traditional powerhouse teams(Orlando), I am having my doubts. But hey, life goes on.

I don’t think any city that has a college football team besides the GA Southern Eagles can call themselves hardcore this year. Normally I’d take a shot at any GT fan, but with 6-7 on our resume last season yeah not so much lol.
Honestly I think the general consensus is that we got very lucky in the first round because of a huge mistake by the GM of Orlando. As for the 2nd round if you ask me that part was also a failure. If I’m not mistaken that’s the first time the Bulls had been in the 2nd round for a while, and not only that, but it was with Derrick Rose who should be inexperience at that point. In a way we should have steam rolled them in that second round.
Sadder part about this is the two games we did win was because Joe and Josh went off and it was in spite of what LD was doing.

GRANDAD-I sorry to burst your bubble, but we can’t trade for JMcGhee. His salary is $1.6M and we don’t have anything of value in that price range that would motivate them to consider trading him. I’m sure they would seriously consider JSmith or AHorford, but they would have to give up all of their size, in ABlatche, Yi and McGhee, to come close to matching salaries.
Now, a sign and trade with Denver for Nene could work. They need a PF, and with Nene opting out of his contract, there might be some interest on their part in a sign and trade for JSmith or Horford. The only problem I see with this trade scenario is Nene isn’t as productive overall as Josh or Horford. All we’d gain out of it would be an inch or so in height, which is about all some of our fans seem to think we need in the middle.
A trade with Dallas could get us the center we covet. But they already have a starting center and PF, so they would have little interest in Horford or Josh. However, with JKidd turning 39 next season, they might be interested in KHinrich. It would be interesting to see if they would consider trading Heywood and a draft pick, or that French PG they have, for Hinrich.
Teams with UFA’s are sometimes willing to take players they normally wouldn’t go after because they’d rather end up with something rather than nothing. So, maybe we can encourage a sign and trade involving Dalembert for Marvin or Hinrich, assuming he’s willing to sign for a salary in the $8-9M range.
Those who aren’t dreamers or delusional can see how difficult it can be for us to acquire a decent Big, let alone one like DHoward and ABogut, or even ABynum. The best case scenario would be for us to sign DJordan to an inflated offer sheet and try to force a sign and trade. They might be willing to take Zaza, and our 2nd rd pick if needed.

Melvin,
I think somebody will sign Bibby to be their 3rd PG.
Ken S,
I don’t think Dallas will trade JKidd. But we agree they will try and trade Haywood. With Caron Butler and Tyson Chandler both expiring, I think they will prefer to resign Chandler and let Butler go (remember, they won the title with Butler not playing since January).
So Dallas might do an even Marvin for Haywood. That way, they get a SF who can start, play decent defense, and can help Marion out. This would also allow them to resign Chandler.
Personally, I’m not sold on Haywood because of his remaining contract (4 years, $34 mil), and he turns 32 this year. However, Marvin is almost useless, and has 3 years, $23 mil left, so at least Haywood might help in the frontcourt.

DRMARYB-WHAT’S UP P-Y-T? I’m doing fine, although I had a couple of complications after surgery that required me to go through some procedures, pain, and discomfort I wouldn’t wish on anyone. But it was still preferable to the alternative. Although my 10# lifting restrictions haven’t been lifted, I’ve been OK’d to go fishing, which I’ll do this weekend.
I’d love to go fishing in Mobile bay, but as good as I am at fishing, I might hook a whale, so I’ll settle for fishing in a creek. I just want to do something that I truely enjoy. I’m tried of recuperating and doing what amounts to nothing.
I’m still hoping to buy the house, by Sept, that I have my eye on, if it’s still available. If it’s not, I’ll head to the Dominican Republic for the winter and see what’s available in the ATL next summer.
After all is said and done, I really believe the best and safest move for the Hawks is to sign or trade for a DEF minded backup center and a shooter/scorer. And I would only consider trading MWilliams, ZPachulia and/or KHinrich to get that center. We currently have 8 players under contract(JJ, Teague, Hinrich, Marvin, Horford, Josh, Rolle and Zaza)which will increase to 9 if we pick up the team option on Pape Sy.
The remaining 4 mandatory slots could be filled by JCollins, DWilkins, draft pick and FA, assuming there are no trades. Although teams that finished ahead of the Hawks, like the Heat, Magic, Celtics, and Bulls, might improve, it won’t likely show up as much as you might think in wins. The weaknesses and vulnerabilities of these teams were exposed during the playoffs. Therefore, they’ll need that improvement just to overcome the opposition taking advantage of what they now know about them.
The Hawks will be just as improved, if not more so, because our improvement will come in a couple of ways. Without adding a single player to our current roster, we’ve increased our speed, quickness, athleticism, and DEF. Once things return to normal with the CBA, hopefully we’ll add depth.
And like the Bulls, Heat and Magic, the Hawks will also see improvement after a yr of adjusting and becoming familiar with new teammates, styles of play, and/or new coaches.

OBRIEN-I wasn’t suggesting we trade for Kidd, just that Dallas might be interested in Hinrich because of Kidds age. I forgot that CButler was a FA. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to give them their pick of the 2 for Heywood.
I wouldn’t worry about his contract, since it’s not all that hard to trade an older, but productive 7′ backup center that can protect the rim.

Hawks Easy Button 1.0
Crunch time to Draft Day, fortunately, the Hawks are in an enviable position, considering they dont have any money b/c they signed one player to a $1M per point contract. And the ownership is licking its wounds after losing its hockey franchise.
In retrospect, coming off another 2nd rd. playoff exit w/ valor and sitting on a roster that should reach the playoffs again, has to be somewhat comforting, in this environment.
The looming NBA lockout should provide some sort of financial relief, but it’s a dangerous proposition, especially for markets like ATL, where you have to drag the fans to the games. The NBA doesn’t enjoy the same fanatasicm as the NFL and if they don’t play 82 games or at all, then oh well, more money for me!
Nevertheless, the Hawks pick safely in the late 2nd rd., there are a few interesting players there, depending how things play out. Major improvement won’t come from the draft so there’s little risk, but high reward, if they get it right. Hawks can only significantly improve by trade this off-season and they have assets, Hinrich, Williams, Teague, that can bring back decent pieces in return.
With the 48th pick:
1. Andrew Goudelock, G, Charleston – the 6′2 shooter is perfect for LDs system and makes Teague expendable. It won’t take two years for the “dog” to come outta this kid, think Ben Gordon with better PG skills and more range. He’ll spread the floor, keep teams honest, free JJ and keep the house rockin with 3pt. bombs! The Stone Mountain – Bobby Cremins product will immediately be a fan favorite and is accustomed to the ATL pro level of competition.
2. Jon Leuer, 6′11, F, Wisconsin – this “Baby Dirk” is a 5-tooler. He has the skill set most of our bigs lack. He can shoot, pass, dribble, rebound and catch. We don’t have one F/C that can do all 5; they either only go one way, can’t dribble, can’t shoot or can’t catch and go. He’s a great shooter with ball handling skills like a SG. He’s not a banger but his size is an immediate mismatch on the wing or at the top of the key, where he’s dangerous, like Dirk!
3. Keith Benson, 6′11, F/C, Oakland – he already protects the basket better than Al Horford, despite his slight frame. Marcus Camby and Tyson Chandler were both slim coming out. His “dogged” protection of the rim is instinctive, he doesn’t give up on blocks and would provide another legitimate shotblocker besides Smith. He has some skills offensively, baby hook, handles, ugly but effective post moves, can run the floor; but he’s most impressive defensively. His length and athleticism alone will immediately improve the Hawks. Dallas’ championship is equally due to Chandler’s dogged defense and multiple offensive rebounds. Unlike, Horford who repeatedly “watched” while Rose penetrated for layup after layup. This kid will challenge those shots.
With some luck, one of these three will fall to the Hawks, I’m less impressed with Lighty, Hopson or any other athletic tweener. Another Royal Ivey or Damian Wilkins, we don’t need. Shooters, shotblockers and rebounders win games.
Again, trades will improve the starting lineup, but reserves will be called upon during a playoff run. see Barrera, Chalmers, Cardinal. Moreover, we have to find guys that can not “run” LDs offense, but “execute” it. The offense generates open shots, but if you cant shoot, it does no good. Find “shooters” that can hit open shots, “long” rebounders and defenders that don’t give up layups!

as you guys know Granger had to play the 4 coming into the Pacers and Warrick still has yet to play the 3 due to a lack of big men. If we get more bigs we can play Thomas as a post up/transition scoring and midrange SF like Josh or Granger.

Can you trade a TPE for a draft pick? If so, the Hawks should trade their TPE to the Knicks for their first round draft pick. And the Knicks can trade the TPE for Johnny Flynn of Minnesota. Or the Hawks could just trade the TPE for a player such as Flynn or Thompson in Sacramento. IF the Hawks make the trade with NYK. Then they have a first round pick to package to move up, or to trade for a veteran with Marvin.
Trade Pape Sy and Al Horford for Rockets 2 Picks, Hill and Hasheem to Match Up or NVR compete for a Title, Josh will expire or be traded and Marvin Will be a starter next to Joe!

D.Motiejunas[7'1,230lbs] + Jordan Hill (4ppg)*
people may not think its sexy but this is well thought out and uses Win Shares the predictor of how much a player effects the game whether its defense or offense.
Collins speed was an obvious problem and a reason he played no more than 18 minutes in the playoffs.
So upgrade offensively over Jason Collins lineup while maintaining holding opponents to low championship caliber 90-95ppg.

Jason Collins (2ppg, 1rpg)
Have Hawks given any thought to winning a championship by divesting into this draft. I’d say no because there’s no reason Wizards should have our pick.
Hawks seem to be one of those franchises who go on hearsay, as in I hear they say its a weak draft so lets trade the pick.
We have no Lebrons on this team. The “Big 3″ are what they are, trade Horford and win now. Smith who has already been covered as the top rebounding small forward in the league and can post up Durant, Melo and if not Lebron can outrun him given the weight loss.
We overcommitted to Joe, now we need to commit to winning it all before Josh leaves.
Look at the past & possible future small forwards in the Finals. Ron Artest power 3. Paul Pierce. Shawn Marion. Lebron James. Kevin Durant.
Josh Smith or Marvin Williams-Joe Johnson because we traded to benefit Horford bcuz he was an All Star Center?
It’s now or never ATLANTA.

Problem with DJordan is Hawks wouldn’t have enough cap room under the old CBA to make a realistic offer. The cap under the new CBA is sure to be lower.
For the sake of an NBA title Trade Pape Sy and Al Horford for Rockets 2 Picks, Hill and Hasheem to Match Up or NVR compete for a Title, Josh will expire or be traded and Marvin Will be a starter next to Joe!

Can anyone fill a depth chart with all these supposed trades or free agent lineups??
Jason Collins is too old slow to be a consistent scorer, there are other players who can play 18 minutes at center against Dwight. {Also note that Orlando may get another center to replace Gortat/play Dwight at the 4}Fool me once.
Say for example Pape Sy at the backup 2. How can anyone expect Sy to make this team a contender???
So its another also-ran season full of hapless scouting and skinny 220 lb big me? Non bangers with no defense and shoot low percentage jump shots and draw no double teams?
Pick and pop? no thanks. If we have ONE 220 lb power forward-center by starting day we have already said we’re not competing for the championship. I’m sorry.
If we trade Smith for a small forward not named Lebron, Durant, Anthony. we’ve lost. He’s not capable of playing center so you’ll have to find a team with two centers to give up for Josh.
Anyone want to try a trade for Haywood/Kaman for Smith?? I seriously heard someone suggest trading Smith because Teague can block shots and dunk.
That should be a LUXURY not a NECESSITY in wining. I swear ATL likes making it hard on themselves.
Trade Sy and AL for ATLANTA’s sake. There is no way we win with a superstar esp. thru trade.
We need DEPTH to win against CHI and Miami.
