To hear Rick Sund and Dave Pendergraft talk today, the Hawks have changed their thinking when it comes to second-round draft picks.
Don’t expect the Hawks to draft another international project and either leave him playing overseas (Sergey Gladyr) or banish him to the far end of the bench/D-League (Pape Sy). More likely they will target a collegiate senior and, Pendergraft says, they expect to buck the odds and find a useful player at No. 48.
“We are not approaching this like there is luck involved,” he said. “We are approaching it like, ‘This is our pick and somebody we expect to make our team.’ And hopefully, if there is an injury, you can plug [the rookie] in there and they will be able to help.”
Perhaps more significantly, the Hawks might finally be to the point where there doesn’t have to be an injury to to the rotation guys for young guys to play. Sure, that might happen by necessity with just seven players under (guaranteed) contract next season and no financial flexibility (under the current CBA), but it still would represent a change in direction for the organization.
Asked if there is room on the roster for a promising second-round pick to get minutes, Pendergraft said:”What you have to weigh is, if we take a collegiate player and he is put in the same situation as Josh Powell or Etan Thomas, could they do as well or better?”
The other question, of course, is if the coach would play a rookie who is as good as those guys, but one thing at a time.
Sund said the Hawks are likely to draft the best available talent.
“It’s safe to say that, but I’m not going to commit to it,” he said. “I think you look at it as a need that you have and the best talent and then you equate it. Is that talent significantly better than the need? If it’s close, you take the need.”
What do the Hawks need?
“We would like to get a little tougher,” Sund said. “Hinrich helped us in that area and that kind of trickled down to some of the other players. I always like shooting. Size, rebounding. All of those things. Maybe not one is more important than the other.”
What skills tend to translate best from college to pro?
“People that rebound in college generally rebound in the NBA, even if they don’t make it for [the long term],” Sund said. “If you are a good rebounder in college, generally a good rebounder at professional level. Or if you are a good shooter. Some guys may be good shooters but they need more time to get it off.”
The Hawks aren’t releasing the names of the prospects they bring in for workouts. Sund’s explanation was that the workouts are not as significant since the Hawks don’t have a first-round pick. He said the players the team invited to Atlanta are simply those the Hawks didn’t get a chance to see at one of the three group workouts.
Pendergraft said the Hawks invited about 20 players. Most are college seniors and only three or four prospects are centers/power forwards.
“There’s probably been more swing players than ‘bigs’ simply because of supply and demand,” Pendergraft said. “There are not a lot of big guys.”
OK, blog people, take those clues provided by Sund and Pendergraft (college senior, tough rebounder or good shooter) and look at the list of prospects and see if you can narrow down the Hawks’ potential draftees.
Sund has hit on some value in the second-round before: He got both Earl Watson and Bobby Simmons in the 2000 draft for Seattle (and then traded Simmons for Predrag Drobnjak).
“The process in the second round, [since] the percentages aren’t all that high, is patience,” Sund said. “We ask a couple different questions. Does he have one NBA skill? Another is, does he have size? Or is there a player that is a little bit opposite of ‘Do they one NBA skill?’ and do they have multiple skills? A lot of those guys, like Bobby Simmons, are jacks-of-all-trades; they do a lot of things good but nothing necessarily great. Those players do have an opportunity to make it as—and I’m using this in a positive way—to have more of a journeyman status over the years.”

we need size and not more Magnum Rolles. all skinny bigs do is give up size on both ends.
Give up a layup on defense and shoot jumpers on the other end. Get us some bangers and a 7foot power forward or a guy like Elton Brand/David West with the wingspan/length of a 7′3 – 7′5 player.

Najeh, I like your free agent wish list simply because you know what you are gonna’ get. That’s what I’m talking about. Getting what you need and not fretting over the unknown quantities of a 48th pick.
Having said that, do due diligence with that pick and find a gem. That would be gravy on the steak. Make a solid pick there, don’t fall asleep at the wheel. We might get lucky, but like Dimitroff would do, go in there and get a serious need. A rebounder/defender who is not a foul machine.
But, yeah, I love that list Najeh and these guys look like value players in our price range. I would also add Grant Hill or Vince Carter to that list.

“If salary wasnt the issue who would you rather have Ellis or Andre Iguldora ”
Definitely Iguodala. Iguodala plays defense and plays small forward, a position of weakness for the Hawks. Ellis plays no defense and plays shooting guard, a position of strength for the Hawks.

Definitely. T-Mac too. Formerly great veterans who have been deemed to be washed up can usually still provide something off the bench for a relatively cheap price.

Marvin for Beasley? Am I missing something here? I would trade Marvin, Hinrich, and a 1st pick for Beasley.
A front 4 of JJ, Beasley, Josh, and Al would be solid. Is there character issues with Beasley? Work Ethic?
I’ve just always been one of these trade 2 or 3 for 1 quality guy. Beasley seems like he’s way ahead of Marvin, and younger, to me.

I don’t think Minny would draft Irving if he’s available. Maybe Kanter or Valanciunas. Darko’s not exactly an answer at the 5 for them.
Just found out Beasley has been in trouble with weed – so Marvin with a bad back and Beasley with weed issues = an exchange of the underachieving #2 picks.

I’m starting to zero in in Shelvin Mack and Josh “no leap” Harrelson. I’ve never seen a dude whose running vertical is only one inch higher than his standing. And he’s got Thompkins body fat issues. But he is huge in his frame, and tough as nails.

Keith Benson would be a steal in the second round for the Hawks. I saw him play 3 times this past season. He has great offensive skills. He will need to bulk up some, but he has a NBA future IMHO. I don’t think he will be available @ #48. The Hawks will have to trade up to get Benson.

drmaryb,
good points but the only question i have is where are the bigs coming from?Chandler out of Hawks price range so is Dalembert i know you dont like.Haywood not in love with. Oden they say might not be back on court until 2012. I dont see where a big is coming from unless it is from the draft and the chances of a 48 pick big being a factor is slim to none. I agree with you but i just dont know where the big is coming from considering the Hawks want to stay under the luxury tax.
I do think that the Hawks pick can find a decent to good rebounder maybe get someone like a udonis haslem type which still kills me cause the hawks actually had him but never signed him and he went overseas

Hawks are real weak at the SF..Got to focus on getting more scoring from that position.Better offense helps your defense equals more wins..We need a baller with the mid-range shot, sorta like
Al’s but can dribble drive and shoot on the move with ease…A rebounder is also desperately needed along with a young backup rim protector.
With the #2 Pick the Altanta Hawks select Derick Williams!!!
@ Buddy, water under the bridge dude.. Headed for Silicon Valley. Looking forward to getting away from this oppressive heat for a minute!

He will be afraid of being fired during the season since his contract is not guaranteed past next year, so he will go all out in the regular season and save nothing for the playoffs..
Disagreed.
Woody won 47 games, and then 53 games in the regular season, but lost his job because he got swept in the playoffs twice. LD only won 44 regular season games, but Rick was impressed with his playoff performance.
I think LD will be ok winning 46 games as long as they do well in the playoffs.

We need a trade of a core piece to help change the culture of this team. Hinrich helped, but he’s not enough. I know folks bash him, but he’s more professional and helpful to Teague than Bibby ever was.
We still need a solid SF and a young athletic big who can help push Al to PF since he no longer has what it takes to bang at the C position. Maybe he’ll have a change of heart next season. If he and Josh could get back the tenacity that got them All-Star aspirations we’d be set. Instead, every member of our core is satisfied with their $$ and satisfied with meeting expectations.
LD did nothing to change the mentality, culture or toughness of this team. He merely proceeded as Woody V2. Hopefully next year he’ll drop a T-bag and instill his will. He talks a great talk, but has yet to hold anyone on the team accountable.

NBAdraft.net has the Hawks drafting Charles Jenkins, a PG/SG combo from Hofstra. Has anybody heard of this guy or seen him play?
Strengths: Strong combo guard with excellent scoring ability … Has good length at 6′3.25″ with a wingspan of 6′7.5″… Super efficient, shooting 51.7% from the field … Good shot selection, rarely forces the issue… Really developed his shooting ability at school… In senior season, averaged 2.0 made threes per game at a 42% clip … Very skilled in spot up shooting situations… Can drive to the basket well with either hand …
Crafty ball-control combined with overwhelming strength makes him hard to keep out of the lane… Finds unique ways to finish at the rim … Very aggressive in transition, never shying away from contact … Due to physicality, spends a lot of time at the free throw line (6.7 FTA per game) …
Impressive assist/turnover ratio (2.16 assists per turnover) and good overall playmaking ability suggest he can play the point guard position at the next level… Very unselfish… Makes an effort defensively… With his long arms and good anticipation, he forces a good amount of steals (1.7 SPG)… Clutch performer… Smart kid who plays very hard….
Weaknesses: Not a true point guard … Had to be ball-dominant at Hofstra and ball-dominant scoring role-players are a dime a dozen in the NBA … Exposed when isolated defensively … Is prone to getting beat off the dribble …
Average athleticism hurts his defensive potential at the next level … It’s hard to see his physical/bullying style being nearly as effective in the NBA … Redshirted his true freshman year, so he’s a year older than the rest of his class …
Played in the Colonial Athletic Association (mid-major) for four years, so he hasn’t had many opportunities to prove himself against great competition … 2/3rd of his games came against teams outside the RPI top 100, so it’s difficult to get too excited about his numbers considering his teammates deferred to him and he was the primary option at all times offensively.
How he would fit into a better team and in a team concept is debatable … Had a standing reach of just 8′0.5 which is the same as Jimmer Fredette who measaured just over 6′ feet barefoot … .
Overall: Players like Jenkins are not rare in the NBA but can be very valuable… He has the tools to transition into a solid drive and dish point guard or spot-up shooting guard if he finds a team that is willing to give him a chance in their rotation ….
A team willing to give him a chance in their rotation? That does not sound like LD. But I do think the Hawks will draft a combo guard.

I honestly don’t think Sund was impressed at all. Drew left an All-NBA player to rot on the bench for an entire half. He overused Jamal in the Chicago series when it was clear his shot had abandoned him and he wasn’t useful for anything else. I think Sund would fire Lame Duck this instant if he had the autonomy to make that decision. He wanted Casey.
Sund gave away two first round draft picks to force Lame Duck to stop playing Bibby. LD’s hiring was not Sund’s decision, nor will his retention be. Again, Sund’s job is to rubber stamp decisions that are made by the ASG.
Regardless, I think the Hawks will be better in the regular season in the absense of Crawford and Bibby. The defense will be tons better and Crawford’s offense I think will be easily reproduced by distributing his shots among better players. Lame Duck will take credit for the improvement next year but it will be Sund’s recognition that Bibby and Crawford were hurting the team that sets up that improvement.

Lebron will need a post game because his athleticism he will being to lose in a few years. He has already lost a bit. He can lenthen his career working on a post up game. That is what Jordan and Kobe did. “Do we really expect our draft pick to see time anywhere but the D-League?” – Fundamentals
No, we don’t expect it. But finding a Landry Fields/Monta Ellis/Manu Ginobli-style second round miracle is just about the only conceivable way to improve this team. The key advantage to a second round pick is they fill a roster spot and are extremely cheap, plus you don’t have to guarantee the contract for multiple years like a first round pick.
I wouldn’t be surprised if our rotation next year was limited to:
Starters
Hinrich
JJ
Marvin
Smoove
Al
Bench
Teague
Zaza
Damien
Collins
I would like the Hawks to re-sign Armstrong and give him minutes in an effort to help him develop into a legit rotational player but I don’t see it happening. He has the physical tools but he’s just a bad basketball player.

brigadierjerry … Hey baby what’s up with you. I’ve been lurking around and enjoying all these fantastic comments from you and others.
Man, I don’t give a damn about a luxury tax. These owners need to get up off their 8 wallets and spend some snatch! It cost to be the boss. If these Hawks are going to be any type of contender?
They’re gonna’ have to write some blank checks. This city, these fans deserve a winner for Pete’s sake. The Thrashers are gone and we’re tired
of operating on the cheap. Yeah, they spend but like Najeh said last summer, “They don’t spend wisely.”
We need to shake the tree and let a core piece fall out of it. Package something duplicitous for a greater need. Now is the time. No more of what we need is out of our price range.
Get it done or – blow the whistle and throw in the towel.
Any UFA should be on our radar. You got to give up something to get something. Chandler, Dwight, Foster, Varejao – somebody!

BUDDY GRIZZARD-Co-sign. There’s no way of telling how many losses we could have prevented if LDrew had given more mins to DEF minded players like DWilkins and JTeague, instead of relying on Bibby and/or Jamal to score more pts than they gave up. With a DEF minded guard rotation of JJ, Teague, Sy, and Hinrich, the number of steals, deflections, turnovers and fast break opportunities and pts will increase.
Also, a solid perimeter DEF rotation will reduce the need for interior help DEF, which was a constant issue with Bibby or Jamal on the court.
Hinrich can make the 3 like Bibby, and will give us all of the intangibles some felt Bibby provided. However, he can provide us with production that Bibby couldn’t/didn’t.
He has a midrange gm, he can penetrate, create easy scoring opportunities for others, and play DEF. These are things we seldom, if ever, got from Bibby. Although Jamal could penerate, and light up a scoreboard at any given time, he was still a one trick pony who seldom tried to play any DEF. Right now, all of the 8 players under contract have some DEF skills, and none can be labeled as DEF liabilities.
In the playoff series against the Bulls, I believe Teague averaged over 15PPG, and he did it against the leagues MVP and the NBA’s top ranked DEF. He now has confidence in himself, as well as the trust and support of his teammates. And hopefully LDrew can get past his bias against him because of his youth, and because he proved him wrong when finally given a chance.
FUNDAMENTALS-I don’t see how trading away 1 or 2 players will significantly change the culture of this team as long as we have the same coaching staff, with the same approach, and the same OFF/DEF systems.

Heck, what would be wrong with making him play some defense? In the “you play defense or you’ll be benched mode”…which I hope will be applied to Josh Smith next season.

No. I picked Dallas in 6. My exact comments were that Dallas has too much fire power and team balance at all positions to lose to Miami.
That series to me was like 3 on 10.
I never want to see Miami and Bron-Bron win a title – EVER!
Besides, I love Dirk and Jet, they were past due in winning a title. Once they swept the Lakers, it was a wrap for me.
