Bulls at Atlanta Hawks Game 6: All-NBA Al
7:43 pm May 12, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Al was named third-team All-NBA. It’s the 24th time a Hawks player made one of the three teams. J.J. didn’t get a single vote from media after making the third team last season.
“I wasn’t really wasn’t expecting it,” Al said. “It’s really a great feeling. I’m very honored, I really am.”
Al had a great year and got plenty of pub for it, so why wouldn’t he think he had a shot?
“When you are so focused on the playoffs don’t really keep up with things like that,” he said. “And when you think about [All-NBA], it’s an elite group. I’m just really honored to be part of it. It just kind of shows the hard work I put in has been paying off.”
As we’ve seen in the playoffs, there’s more work for Al to do. Based on his history there’s little reason to doubt he will put in the hourse and, given that he’s not yet 25, there’s also reason to believe he will improve.
L.D. said Al’s development has been “truly remarkable” but both he and Al agreed he hasn’t reached his ceiling.
“A guy of his size and his ability, one area of improvement he really needs to make is his footwork,” Drew said. “On the block, he can score. He has skills down there but there is improvement to be made in that box area. He has certainly shown his ability, mid-range, to shoot the basketball. Prior to this year people didn’t see as a real pick-and-pop guy. He has turned into one of the deadliest shooters in the mid range.”
Al said he wants he wants to extend his range this summer.
“I haven’t thought about it that thoroughly, but some of the things I want is to be a better shooter, especially branch out a little more,” he said. “To be able to put the ball on the floor a little more–one dribble, two dribble and take it all the way. Those are things this summer I am really going to put a lot of emphasis on.”
Notes
- Same lineup tonight.
- The message on the Hawks’ locker room board at shootaround today: “Plane leaves for MIA 2:30 on Tues.”
- Teague on running the team: “We’ve got a lot of good shooters on this team. I’ve got to give them the ball where they can continue to play hard.”
- Josh on Teague’s feel for when to attack and when to facilitate: “That takes time, with minutes. He’s learning as we speak. We’ve got to be patient.”
- Smoove on being the catalyst: “I understand. It’s not pressure for me. I’ve dealt with it for a while. That’s just the DNA. I have to get off to a good start and be aggressive, especially on the defensive end. “
- L.D. on fourth-quarter offense: “We just have to move the ball. That’s just the bottom line. We can’t start isolating; we can’t start holding the ball. If you just hold the ball and try to play one-on-one you play right into their hands.”
- L.D. on Josh not retaliating against Boozer: “I don’t think there will be a carryover effect at all. Josh is professional enough to know he has to do that. All that does is plays right into their hands. It takes him out of his game, which I am sure they want. He has to be professional. It’s in the past.”
- Chicago media types were asking the Bulls if they are looking ahead to the Heat. D-Rose: “Definitely we want to get it over with but it’s not over with. We still have a game. We are anxious. We can’t look ahead.”
- It’s worth remembering that the Hawks have already exceeded expectations in the playoffs while the Bulls have underachieved relative to their regular season. That’s why L.D. thinks the Bulls are feeling pressure despite leading the series. “Going into the series, no one thought there would be a Game 6,” he said. “I give credit to my players. I think they have stepped up to the challenge. We have nothing to lose. We are going to lay it our on the line.”

NBA – JOHNSON BUCKLES UNDER PRESSURE
If Joe Johnson is unable to find his stroke tonight, the Hawks will likely lose. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Johnson doesn’t always perform when his back is against the wall. Johnson has the 2nd worst field goal percentage in Win-or-go-home playoff games among active players.

Or, will he experiment to try and get the most out of this roster. Knowing L.D., I’m guessing he’ll probably stick with his “shot makers”, regardless of what is going on, but here’s to hoping that his coaching doesn’t ruin this game, because we definitely can’t afford coaching to hurt us even more when our players are already playing like garbage.

By the way, unless Collins is guarding Boozer solely in the post, he really shouldn’t be on the floor. He’s far too immobile to defend any other player on the Bulls’ starting lineup. I think we should stick with Zaza. Put him on Noah to counter the hustle and let Al take Boozer. Either that or put Zaza on Boozer and Al on Noah. Either way, I’m not liking what I’m seeing from Collins.

How can a team play at their worst ever? Just ask the Hawks.
Teague is out-with a sprained wrist. Even if Teague comes back, he won’t be effective. Now, just look at the body language. The Hawks looked defeated before they step foot on the floor. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see that the Hawks collapsed mentally before the tip off begun. Look at them in warm-ups, they looked like they were nervous and had a bad feeling about this one.

It’s a jumpshooting offense. When the jumpers aren’t fallin, they don’t got anything else to go to. Just keep chuckin up jumpers.
I understand the logic behind signing Joe to $126 million. But, in games like this, $126 million should be setting the tone and leading the Hawks, not lagging behind with the rest of the squad. $126 million should be in a league with the likes of Rose, Durant, LBJ, Wade – guys that can’t be checked. The only thing you can do is try to make it tough for them or slow them down a bit. JJ’s not this kinda guy. Joe can be checked, he can be shut down.

Jamal is having to play point guard, so obviously, he’s not going to be that effective. We at least need someone who wants to play some defense. Give Damien a try.

I don’t want to go to bed thinking bout this nightmare! I’m out you’ll. No more blogging for me. This is not fun anymore. But before I leave-we’d be better off with a new coach in the offseason. I’ll take Larry Brown, even commentator Hubie Brown, Mike Fratello (best choice). Get LD off this team. Don’t resign him. Break this team up to pieces. It’s gotten to the point where everyone needs to go. Everyone is expendable. Sell this franchise. Fire the GM, and sell the team to someone who is willing to listen to the fans of yesteryear.

I’m disappointed that we are down by 10, even if it is manageable. This is a home game and must-win game for the Hawks. The energy and effort should be a given. Those two attributes should be off the charts right now. The offensive stupidity and lack of effort on defense is the reason why we are down, and those two things should never be an issue in a game like this. The Hawks should be ashamed of themselves. Joe, Jamal, and Al really need to play better also. They’ve been mediocre in this first half.

It’s an elimination game. Get grimey, get physical, play like your seasons on the line. It’s difficult watching our bigs down low. They can’t even establish their spots down low. Hustle plays, the boards, physical-ness, it should all be going the Hawks way.
But it’s not. That’s why I’m disappointed.

what a frackking idiot, what a frackking idiot.
As soon as the Bulls show some momentum, the match ups should be Josh on Booz, Al on Noah and then bring Zaza to mix it up.
Collins was not working. He had to make a move earlier.
And to sub Teague for Jamal being just 6 points down and us clearly having problems on D in the front court he gave the game away.
And WTF was this last play? We have an opportunity to go to the half under 10 points and the best he can do is have JJ bring the ball up and pass to Josh at the 3 point line?

“Hawks offense needs to let Jeff run it, that way Joe can get the shots that will go in”
That problem boils down to coaching. That’s on Drew more than the players. He wants the ball in Joe’s hands the majority of the time. That’s the way it seems, anyway. That’s another reason why I want L.D. replaced as head coach. That’s just one of the many reason, but L.D. too often tries to beat a dead horse when it clearly isn’t working. Force feeding Joe and Jamal never works. I can’t remember the last time we won a game by force feeding them when they didn’t have it going offensively. I don’t know why that’s so difficult for the staff to realize.

As bad as they came out in this game they are only down 10, which is doable if they put some effort into it.
As much as I am disappointed in how they are playing this game I refuse to bash them tonight. Do you realize that they have won more second round games than the Lakers and Celtics, COMBINED???
Yes, yes I know the goal is to win the championship however this team has exceeded expectations in the playoffs and FINALLY found their point guard in the process. Now hopefully they can find some b-ball smarts in the second half.

That doesn’t mean you lay down when your season’s on the line. You don’t get outhustled. You show more effort. You play smarter. Your All-Stars + 6th man show up. Not give you the bullstuff they’ve given you in every game we’ve lost this series.
They’ve shown they’re capable of beating this team. They’ve done it twice. So, when you’re at home and everythings on the line, come to play.
As I mentioned earlier, a hard fought loss would hurt, but it beats getting blown out.

The bad hawks are hard to root for. Downright frustrating. They waste possessions. They turn the ball over. They get out-muscled in the post by SF’s. They revert to ISO. They get nothing from their All-Stars. They are ish.

Put Zaza in already. He’s the only guy who has been a factor on the glass, and Collins isn’t giving us enough to be much of a factor anyway. L.D.’s stupidity is making Collins even more useless since he has placed him on Noah instead of Boozer. In the previous games, Al had Noah under control and Collins had Boozer under control, but L.D. decided to gamble with the matchups. Now, Zaza has been the only big man to give us second chances on the boards in this game, which we definitely need, yet L.D. has him out of the game. Wake up, L.D., you are strongly earning your nick-name of coach Disgrage right now.

It is time to get rid of Joe Johnson! I know it will be hard because the ownership rewarded him the mega deal but he has to go! For many years I thought Josh Smith may have been the problem but its become clearly evident that Johnson is a player that shows up when he wants to. He doesn’t hustle, get to the foul line, rebound, or play good defense. The Jordan Crawford deal will come back to bite the Hawks for a longtime if he blossoms.

The team that has won the first quarter has won every game in this series. Last game Zaza sits the whole 4th while JC1 plays and contributes nothing. This game it was so important to come out and compete in the first quarter. I said on this blog before Game 5 the Bulls will go straight at Collins and try to exploit his slow foot speed. Game 6 Las Vegas Larry plays Collins to start the game and the 3rd quarter and he goes -8 in 8.5 minutes in the first quarter then goes -5 in 7 minutes to start the Third.
Not saying every score while Jason Collins was on the floor was his fault but you have to understand what’s working and what is not. Zaza had 13 points in 23 minutes in Game 5 and sat the entire 4th quarter. JC1 was 1-for-9 and PLAYED the entire 4th quarter. Las Vegas Larry getting paid in Sin City ya’ll. Fire this joke, please. I can’t take another season of breaking down what a moron this guy is. Please ASG just eat the 1.5m.

The Hawks look very flustered tonight. Tons of airballs already. Van Gundy said it best – the Hawks are a tough team when they are in front. Meaning that the Hawks are a good team when they have the lead. It seems like they only play well when things are going their way. When they are tied or have the lead or aren’t down by more than a few points, they are alright, but once the going gets tough, they always crumble.
Think about it, it’s incredibly rare for the Hawks to win a game in which they trail by 15+ points. In fact, it’s rare that they lose by less than 10 points when they are down by 15+ at any point in a game. They are a terrible team at playing from behind. It’s tough to even remember the last time the Hawks won a game when they got down by 15+ points, even if it was early on. You can’t blame that on lack of experience or youth anymore either, since this core has been to the playoffs for the past 4 years and they all have at least 4 years of NBA experience (the “core” does).
It looks like our season may end on another bad note, and all we’ll hear after that is how the team just didn’t fight enough but how they are confident that they will come back better next year. That’s all BS though. As much our coaching and offensive system is flawed, I still think that the biggest issue is mental fragility and weakness. It’s just infinitely disappointing.
I’m ready to just start fresh with some new players. Management needs to stop getting the hopes of fans up for nothing. It’s cruel and pointless. If this keeps up, fan attendance and profits, as a result, are going to drop next year, just like they did this year.
That is likely what is going to happen since you can tell that the weak-minded Hawks have already given up on this game. I don’t even want to hear the post-game interviews since nothing that these guys say is genuine anyway. Drew will pretend that he did everything right and the Hawks just lacked a “sense of urgency” and “missed shots”. Joe will basically say that he doesn’t care. Al will talk about how the Bulls just outplayed them, but say they still played well, and Jamal will just act like the Hawks didn’t play well and let the Bulls win. I really don’t want to hear it though. It’s the same story year after year. I want to hear that someone was in the locker room afterward crying, so that we at least know that someone (meaning one of the players) actually cares.

Done deal.
Onto Falcons season.
They exceeded my expectations, but, as someone else pointed out, this team just doesn’t seem to have the personnel needed to get past this round. Do I have any confidence they’ll make moves to improve? No. This organization is the toughest organization for the average fan to support. They don’t so ish to get over the hump. Over and over and over, round 2 playoff exits. But, the core remains untouchable.
Move a peice of this core. Preferably, Al Horford. I’d love to move Marvin, but it won’t happen. Horford’s a peice of value though. Get him gone and bring in someone that can bang and get buckets in the paint.

Sautee watch the game again on replay and watch that first quarter. Thibs’ game plan was CLEARLY to go at Collins which they did on four of their first 6 posessions. As soon as they switched Horford onto Boozer, Noah got the ball with Collins defending and took him to the hole.
8 points were scored directly by attacking Collins. I understand there were turnovers. I understand the Bulls shooting was off the charts. But this was clearly CHI’s game plan to start the game and Las Vegas Larry’s predictability allowed them to win the first quarter, which predicted the outcome of the game.

Hawks may need to follow blueprint that Bulls are doing as far as building the type of team
Al Horford is about as tough a player as a studio gangster. He looks softer than charmin
Hawks have a few building blocks but changes need to happen the makeup of this team

That’s why I said you had a point. But LD can’t win on this blog. Here you are saying he’s too predictable while others say he never settled on a rotation.

Horford – bulk up. Toughen up. MAN UP this summer brah – you choked big time.
TEAGUE!!! The sole highlight of the series young stud! You are the pg of the future – they have no choice but to start you PERIOD. Great learning experience for you.

I’m finally on the FIRE LARRY DREW bandwagon. He has shown he is not capable to coaching a team. The same “consistency” he wanted from Teague he is not showing. The Bulls have shown that defense wins, and instead of putting in Wilkins to cover Deng Drew puts in Marvin Williams whom I have supported since he got drafted. Joe Johnson has disappeared, Horford is scared to drive, and our rotation isn’t good enough to win.

our ‘heavy hitters’ didn’t come to play this series, and if they did, it was only in moments.
Again, I’ll let Joe’s usual defense team handle the blog vs. Joe case.
Al Horford really lost me throughout the course of these playoffs. He came out lookin mad soft and very expendable.
Jamal is what he’s always been. Streaky, and can’t be counted on in the biggest moments.
J.Smith still has flaws, and still needs to improve. But all in all, the dude came to play. That’s all I can ask. That and cut down on the jumpers, and we’re good.
Jeff Teague, the only real lone Hawk that deserves not an ounce of criticism.
Where they go from here, I could care less. They won’t blow it up. Hypothetically, if they did, I’d be crackin’ up even harder at the trade for Hinrich. You move forward with what you have, but you make a move this offseason. Members of this squad aren’t getting drastically better anytime soon. The upside is there for some of these guys, but look at what you’re competing with in the East. Really, if this organization is serious about moving this team forward (I have doubts that they care), then move a valuable member of this core. Do it.

Jamal shot .333 from the field and .173 from 3 point land in this series.
Still, he averaged 30 minutes per game.
In his defense, I think the refs stopped whistling any contact he got, but the hard fact is that in many shots he was trying to get the calls so badly that he became so notorious as an in-flight flopper that the refs simply don’t want to reward him and additionally don’t call when he gets really hit.

Al Hortford was a huge disappointment this game, and Joe Johnson proved that he’s nothing more than a choke artist with a max contract. I knew that he was going to be a liability in this series, and I knew that the Hawks were going to regret the trade with Washington.
1. Joe Johnson has no hunger for putting up numbers. If Jordan Crawford were playing in this series, then he would have been attacking the basket at every opportunity. Jordan was younger, faster, more agile and had a much better 3-pt shot than Joe Johnson.
2. As slow as Mike Bibby was, his clutch 3-pt shooting would have came in handy at various moments. Imagine Jeff Teague playing as a starter with Bibby coming off the bench to play a Steve Kerr type of role.
3. The Hawks gave up a draft pick. So much for bringing in someone fresh from college to fill in the gaps that were exposed in this series.
The most disappointing thing about this series is that the Hawks could have beaten the Bulls. But they fell short.

and i hear you bigdave.
by ‘heavy hitters’, i meant that the guys the hawks were counting on.
i know the hawks don’t have anybody on this roster that can be put up with the likes of durant/westbrook, dirk, LBJ/wade, d.rose…
but, the thought behind it is if the hawks can collectively play well. if joe/jamal/horford show up, we’d be in decent shape. at the least, we wouldn’t get our arses handed to us in a elimination game. but, they didn’t do that. jamal went m.i.a. after game 1. joe played decent, but dudes not getting payed to play decent, dude’s getting payed to be the workhorse. other than game one, he didn’t really have a workhorse series.
i understand they’re running guys at him. but, a lot of times, he was just flat getting frustrated with boguns/deng on him alone. he takes too long making moves. he’s not decisive. his game doesn’t allow him to get to the line. basically, he’s ‘gaurd-able’.
the hawks were running bodies at d.rose, but dude still finds ways to get his. i know it’s senseless comparing joe to d.rose, but when you’re banking that kinda money, you’re gonna be expected to shoot better than what he shot the last 2 games. very average numbers.

You guys got exactly what paying Joe Johnson the max should get you. The problem is that your best player–Josh Smith–is a total nutter and can’t be depended upon. Another problem is that your fanbase (or the transient city of Atlanta as ESPN calls it) doesn’t deserve a winner. Enjoy a couple more years of 2nd round exits before you can finally shed JJ’s contract and rebuild.

The fanbase thing gets old. Really. The Hawks have had 2nd round playoff exit after 2nd round playoff exit. The organization does nothing and shows no commitment to get the peices necessary to get this squad over the hump. They’re satisified with being good enough.
So, back to the fanbase, what fanbase would sacrafice their time and commit themselves to following an organization that doesn’t seem to have the same goals in mind that the fans do? If this organization was really seeking a championship, they wouldn’t hesitate to pay some buck to go get players needed. They wouldn’t hesitate to go over the luxury tax if it meant the difference between a championship contending team and another 2nd round playoff exit. But, they don’t invest the money, so why would fans invest their time and money?

Sometimes, I really think that Josh and Al just need a change of scenery. I would hate to see them leave ATL, but since management is too poor at making decisions to bring in the right coach to really help them develop, I think they probably need to go somewhere else to really become dominant players. I think both guys have the potentially to be top-5 power forwards in this league, they just need the right people to groom them and guide them. At this point though, I think that both guys probably need to head elsewhere to get that guidance.

This team has been together for a while now!!!!!!!! They are not exceeding expectations as far as the fans are concerned. The Thunder is younger than us and they have proven more in the playoffs in two years than the hawks have in four…….This Bulls team has a rookie head coach and a 3rd year MVP with Boozer as their 2nd best option and they are in the ECF already…..A Heat team that was put together in a millisecond and can play better team ball than THE HAWKS….SEKOU says dont blow it up///dont blow it up?? We havent done anything with this same core for darn near 5 years!!
DID we really exceed expectations with 44 regular season wins??? Do we say we really improved because we Beat an Orlando team with only Dwight? Do we say we really improved because we didnt get swept out of the 1st round of the playoffs??? Anyone who vouches for LD should b sent to a mental institution.
I dont think this team lacks Heart..they lack a Leader on the floor and a Direction on the Bench! How can u not adjust in game to the pick and roll with Boozer?? How can u only have a six man rotation(I dont count Collins or Marvin..they barely played) How can u sub Jamal for Teague the whole 3rd qtr and he was the only one trying to get guys involved! This organization baffles me because they do the same things the same way and so dows this sorry AZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ newspaper…We take it light on this team..why….I knw..because u guys arent really Atlanta fans…U just have a job. This city is a joke.
I dont understand how one can coach this bad..how a120 million dollar man can play that passive and how a so called all star forward disappears in the playoffs..how u can continously give NO SHOW MARVIN MINUTES OVER DAMIEN… How u play NO DEFENSE JAMAL The whole game…How ur starters cant even go toe to toe with their BENCH! I was at the game and not 1 offensive set was ran…the bigs didnt even set a decent pick on Rose so Teague or Joe could get a good turn at the basket.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF we bring back the same core……am I supposed to except different results???

Buddy,
That’s why I said you had a point. But LD can’t win on this blog. Here you are saying he’s too predictable while others say he never settled on a rotation.
I’m NOT saying he did a good job, but damn he gets it from every side “irregardless” of what he does. And he’s a rookie too. Poor overmatched soul.
* * *
So here’s my point, Sautee and blog peeps. Zaza came into this contest with the best +/- of any Hawk in the series. Of Hawks players who played at least 20 minutes tonight, he once again had the best +/-. I feel the Hawks lost Game 5 because Las Vegas Larry played an unproductive Jamal Crawford in the 4th quarter and sat Zaza, who had 13 points in 23 minutes (Crawford had two points in 27 minutes, none in the deciding fourth quarter).
Prior to Game 5 I noted that CHI would use it’s speed and athleticism to attempt to exploit the slow foot speed of Collins. Going into Game 6, I hoped that Las Vegas Larry would either start Zaza at Center or at least get him into the game before the exploitation of Collins put the Hawks in too deep of a hole. Collins played almost the entire first quarter and was predictably attacked by CHI’s quicker front court players.
I’m not an NBA coach. I don’t make $1.5m a season. But I accurately predicted what would happen in the first quarters of Game 5 and Game 6. It is Las Vegas Larry’s poor rotations and inability to adjust that cost the Hawks this series. We lost on coaching, not talent. With a better coach, we would be in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Wabe are you saying the Hawks should have used their mid level exception on Shaq? Who do you think they should have got? Not using 20/20 hindsight on Shaq because I would have been excited if they had signed him.
But I think the bigger issue is that the Hawks clearly have the talent to go farther than the second round, the team just needs the right coach to get the most out of that talent. If ASG doesn’t eat the $1.5m and fire Larry Drew for his obvious incompetence then go get a real coach, this team is doomed. We still have a window of opportunity in the next two seasons. Only a legitimate NBA head coach can help the Hawks reach their potential and exploit that window to the fullest.

Buddy Gizzard,
Not saying they should’ve signed Shaq. I wasn’t really too big on signing Shaq to be honest with you. That paired with the fact that I didn’t really ever see him settling with Atlanta when other title contenders were on the block looking for his services.
My point would really be, this organization doesn’t seem to invest in areas of need to help us get over the hump. Whether you think we’re short on personnel or we don’t have the right coach, they both speak to the same issue. ASG has not and don’t seem like they will ever run the organization in a manner that satisfies the fanbase. They don’t come off as a group willing to invest the dollars needed on personnel or coaches to get this team where fans want to see them, in contention.
From a personnel standpoint, this team is flawed. A bunch of jump shooters. I don’t think it’s all on the coach, even though you can make the argument that his offense wasn’t as successful as some might’ve hoped. I might be in the minority here, but I thought Drew actually had himself a good showing for his first time as a headcoach in the playoffs. Sure, there are definitely other coaches who could possibly do a better job, but, this serves the overall argument of what I think of this organization. Forget what I wrote about going over the luxury tax for players. What I’m really getting at is this organization’s too cheap, regardless of whether we’re talking players or coaches, to get what we need to get us over the hump.

Of course, if we could get ourselves a headcoach that’s clearly an upgrade, I’m all for it.
But, if we’re going to fire Drew to pick between more unproven assistants, I’m not really feeling that. Not unless the assistant is in the mold of Chicago’s headcoach, Thibs. This guy is considered one of the top defensive minds in the league, and has been long before he was a headcoach. LD isn’t in that category. If he were, many teams would’ve already been courting his services.
But, this is the frustration you put up with if you’re a Hawks fan. This organization will not get what we need.

Marivin William salariees:
2010-11 2011-2012 2012-13 2013-14
$6,712,500 $7,500,00 $8,287,500 $7,500,00
Who besides the hawks, will pay this salary for a player who isn’t worth a third of this. Marvin brings nothing to the court to justify these monies. No NBA will take on these salaries. So the hawks is stuck with Marvin. Fire Rick Sund!

“From a personnel standpoint, this team is flawed. A bunch of jump shooters. I don’t think it’s all on the coach.” – Wabe
I don’t think it’s all on the coach but I think he demonstrated incompetence by not correctly deploying the personnel that were available, i.e. Teague and Zaza. Collins did a great job against Orlando, and we couldn’t have made it to the second round without him. But he had no role against Chicago’s young, quick, athletic front line. It was inevitable that they would go at him and exploit him. They needed Zaza in there for big minutes to counter hustle with hustle.

When your low 1st rd picks(Josh,Teague), have more heart and desire than your lottery picks(JJ, Jamal,Marvin, and yes Big Al Horford, your’re asking for trouble. Especially considering Teague is damn near a rookie, and Josh couldnt lead his way out of a cardboard box. NO LEADERS ON THIS TEAM = FAIL!
