Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 95, Hawks 83
1:18 am May 11, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Chicago–The energy and effort were there for the Hawks but their execution and poise (and maybe their legs) were lacking at the end.
- The Hawks gradually clawed back from their early 15-point deficit. They survived foul trouble and poor shooting early. They held their own on the boards and limited the Bulls to 63 points over the final three quarters.
- But the Hawks couldn’t finish. Now they have to win Thursday at Philips or the season’s over.
- “We are not content with a loss but we can hang our hats on that we competed,” Josh said. “In Game 5 in Orlando you know what the outcome was with that.”
- The Hawks scored 69 points through three quarters with 36 of those in the paint. They shot 53 percent, had 11 points on the break and just six turnovers. They worked for good shots Chicago’s relentless D.
- In the fourth quarter the Hawks scored 15 points with six in the paint. They shot 31 percent, had two points on the break and four turnovers. They settled for shots against Chicago’s relentless D.
- “For the first three quarters I thought we did a really good job,” L.D. said. “In the fourth quarter we lost our composure. I don’t know if it was their pressure or we did not have the juice.”
- “We were confident,” Al said. “We weathered the storm after we were down early in the game. We stayed with it. I think they just made more plays than us and they were aggressive going to the basket. That might be something we need to do more of instead of settling for jump shots.”
- Al had a couple bad turnovers in the fourth quarter. You could see a turnover coming when he put his head down and tried to post up Noah on the baseline. Throwing that outlet pass away was even worse.
- Teague has been the most consistent player in the series for the Hawks. His line was impressive enough but watching the matter-of-fact way he makes difficult, important plays is truly remarkable.
- “He is doing exactly what they want him to do,” D-Rose said. “He is not turning the ball over. He’s been very tough, especially in transition.”
- Rose made his usual assaults on the basket and usually came away with a score or a foul. Smoove and Al challenged at the basket but it didn’t seem as if there was as much resistance on the perimeter.
- “He made unbelievable plays,” Josh said. “He came off the pick-and-rolls and exploded, drew attention and was able to find guys on the perimeter. When he is doing that for that ball club and being aggressive they are hard to beat.”
- The traps on Rose didn’t work as well, either, mostly because Deng made plays off the dribble when the ball came around to him.
- Josh’s early foul trouble was costly. He was playing with zip when he went out. With him on the bench, Deng and Rose found easier passage to the basket.
- The Bulls shot 28 free throws to 17 for the Hawks but they also had 43 field-goal attempts in the paint compared to Atlanta’s 32. By the end, Teague was the only guy going to the basket for the Hawks.
- Teague thought Rose fouled him on a layup and again when Teague was headed down court with a steal.
- “You cannot go on the road in the fourth quarter down by one point and feel like the officials made bad calls or even the calls that were made in the fourth quarter affect you,” L.D. said. “A call probably didn’t go our way but at that point you cannot allow that to take you out of the game. That is just not being mentally strong. We have to play through it.”
- J.J. went into traffic late and also didn’t get a call. “I just try to play through it,” he said. “It is what it is. The refs are not going to change it so you might as well get back. I know one time when Jeff scored, I think he may have thought he got fouled, but we all should have got back on defense because Derrick Rose went right down and laid it up. Those are the plays you really can’t have in the fourth quarter.”
- Smoove got heated when Boozer swiped at him after his dunk. “He cleared me with an elbow to the jaw,” Josh said. “Nobody is going to do that to me, I don’t care who you are. I’m a man first. It was intentional.”
- Zaza kept the Hawks afloat in the second quarter. He was the only bench guy producing.
- Jamal was just 1 for 9 and never could shake free. He also lost Bogans on those two 3-pointers in the first quarter.
- Marvin managed one rebound in nine minutes. The rest of the bench guys didn’t get in until garbage time as L.D. shortened the rotation.
- The Bulls closed with Taj Gibson, Asik and Brewer instead of Boozer, Noah and Bogans. The three bench guys combined for 13 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the period.
- “They had a good rhythm with their bench guys and they rode them as long as they could,” Drew said. “I was actually in that situation in the third quarter, we were in a really good rhythm so I left Jamal on the bench a little bit longer. Their bench guys did a good job. They played with a lot of energy and a lot of intensity.”
- This game was testier and more physical than the others. Game 6 figures to be more of the same.
- “It’s five straight games against the same opponent,” Tom Thibodeau said. “It’s a fight. You’ve got to be able to get through it. They’re a hard-playing team. We’d like to think we’re a hard-playing team. That’s just the way it is.”

We may lose Game 6. But i don’t see us quitting.
And if Teague puts the work in this off season like he did last off season, the guy is going to be a beast.
And just move Hinrich into Jamal’s spot and move on.

-I suggest that all the knuckleheads refuting my post to check and re-read it. First of all, there is no complaining. I merely listed the seqeuence of plays STARTING FROM WHEN THE HAWKS TOOK THE LEAD FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH 1:37 IN THE 3RD TILL THE POINT WHERE THE BULLS WERE CALLED FOR THEIR FIRST FOUL WITH 8:01 IN THE 4TH!!!!!!!!!
-I challenge anybody to find a call different then what i posted during that span. And since I have to spell it out…….. the calls were bad enough but the timing of the calls made them even worse, all occuring when the Hawks finally took the lead in the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I can say about the Hawks is that if you get an A+ game from Joe Johnson and another A+ game from “The Assasin” Jamal Crawford, the Bulls better watch out!!!! Thats all I’m going to hang my hat on is hope these two sleeping giants wake up and realize that game 7 is for all the marbles. Of course on Thursday that is provided we take care of business in game 6. If JOE and Jamal both get hot at the same time and we win game 6, the Hawks will win game 7 in an absolute and unmitigated cake walk, maybe 128-87, something like that. WATCH OUT BULLS WERE COMING FOR YOU.

“Drew put it another way: “He’s surely not the Jeff Teague we saw during the regular season.”
Larry Drew posturing for Mike Gearon Jr.? He’s gotta explain why he didn’t play Jeff all season, and why we mortgaged our future because of LD’s incompetence.
But LD does sound nice in the huddle.

“league should give boozer tech after reviewing video of his shot to the head of Smoove.” -woody-
___________________
Sund should file that complaint with the powers that be on behalf of his team. However, I would leave that alone because Josh shoved Boozer in the back in retaliation. The ref’s made the right call with a double technical – issue resolved. But, Sund should file an allegation to put that on the record and continue to play in protest of the incident. Perhaps, if Josh did not retaliate, the hawks would have more teeth here.
_____________
All in all, just move on and win the series. That is the best revenge – success. Be mentally tough and just play.

I was proud to see how Josh Smith stood up to Carlos Boozer. Boozer is a big bully and although the cut on his head was bleeding, he was still picking a fight with Smoove. I wish Josh would have head-butted Boozer and watch Boozer fall unconsciously to the floor.

“I still really am interested to see if the NBA does anything about the Boozer punch. He can say it was an elbow all he wants, but it connected with Josh’s face, and it was a cheapshot. If Zaza gets suspended for what they deemed a headbutt after a guy runs up in his face in round one, Boozer should be suspended for the next game. I really would prefer Boozer, because the Taj Gibson guy really scares me, but it’s about the NBA enforcing rules fairly.”
Absolutely Cosign.
I am going to be screaming all day tomorrow if Boozer is not suspended. Gibson played a much more active game, but I just don’t like Boozer. I think it would be sweet justice if he gets suspended. Plus, coming on the next day after the Lakers game, it would be a travesty for the NBA to let Boozer off with the tech he received in the game.

The shove that Josh gave to Boozer seemed to me to be more of a defensive reaction than a retaliation. Boozer was the aggressor plain and simple.

Jeff Teague stats vs. Chicago during the playoffs:
41.4 mpg/ 17.0 ppg/ 55.7% FG/ 4.4 assists/ 3.0 rebounds/ 1.0 turnover per game.
Remember during the regular season when LD would not put him in against Chicago, when we were down 33?
LD, I hope you’ve learned some things.
And I hope Jordan Crawford is not a thorn in our side for years to come

With the acquisition of Kirk and the break out performance by Teague, what do the Hawks do with Jamal this off season?
If they resign, then:
(1) They will most definitely go into the luxury tax (even under best case scenario where the new CBA looks much like the current).
(2) What about the rotations?
(a) Retaining Jamal as the “6th man” makes it such that either Jeff or Kirk will get all but buried at the end of the bench. Jeff has proven worthy of very solid minutes, and Kirk is more consistent and arguably a better all-around player than Jamal (defense anyone?).
(b) Pay Jamal significant money to be buried at the end of the bench. But why?
(3) Other options:
(a) Trade Kirk for a decent big man. Sounds good, but do you really want to have Jamal as your only/primary backup PG? (This may be a viable option if the Hawks can grab a decent FA PG, but i don’t know.)
(b) Resign Jamal for a reasonable contract knowing that he can be used as a trade chip. Resigning just to trade in December/January sounds risky, but maybe it could work.
If they don’t resign Jamal:
(1) They need to be able to use that money to fill another spot of need (e.g., starting-quality center, a very solid back-up big man off the bench, improved SF). But with the way the salary cap is, even if the Hawks don’t resign Jamal, that will not free up dollar-for-dollar monies (in fact, depending on the new CBA, it may not free up any additional monies to go after another solid players).
Depending on what is accomplished this off-season, first half of next season, this Hawks may be in a (even better) position to make (another?*) run at the Finals.
*Possibly ‘another’ because I am not counting the Hawks out yet. They have played a solid series, and the upset is still within their grasp. If they can past the Bulls, I think they will win the Conference Finals.

LD needs to play the big lineup throughout the game, and needs to keep Jamal out of the game unless he’s hitting shots or giving Teague or JJ a breather. He should not be in the game together with JJ and Teague.
ZaZa needs to start next game to make sure we have energy from the start.

I hope that Boozer gets suspended for the next game on thursday. The Hawks can beat the bulls with boozer in the lineup, but Booz deserves to sit down for his rough and roudy play in the paint. If the Hawks collapse and play poorly on thursday, its ok its still been a great season. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE HAWKS ARE PLAYING AN INFERIOR OPPONENT WHO THEY SHOULD PUT AWAY. Secondarily, the Lakers and the Celtics will not be around in the finals so this clears the path for someone else to get rings if its rings they really want. For the life of me i dont understand why joe johnson scored only 15 pts and grabbed a WHOPPING 2 REBOUNDS, while jamal crawford scored a collosal 2 points. In contrast, Jamal scored 24 points per game in the Orlando series. These 2 scorers need to step up big because we wouldnt be in this 2-3 predicament had they just done their jobs. Can you imagine how fired up the city would have been had the Hawks won last night and now the series shifts back to Phillips for us to close out the Bulls on Thursday being up 3-2. Wow…that would have been unbeliev-A-BULLS. Hawks, do the right thing and kick the crap out of the Bulls on thursday and then dominate them on sunday and lets get on to the Eastern Conference Finals. Sound like a good plan?

In all fairness to Booz, Carlos Boozer is in reality a BULLS, BULLSDOZER OR Bulldozer as it were in the paint. He crashed through the paint several times shaking his head as if it was going to fall off as the sweat and blood were running from his big forehead. That would be a good nickname for Boozer. Rev in Tampa, I agree. Boozer started that entire thing.
And, by the way, Rev….Josh has been great the past two games. Take away a couple of bad shots and he was d@mn near perfect! When he plays that way, he is an All Star.
Backing off, for the moment, my wish that Josh gets traded. But, I still don’t trust him not to flake out again.
I’m thinking Josh plays well again in Game 6. He’s motivated. And, really, this series can’t end tomorrow. It won’t. Hawks can still win this thing.

Hawks played well in the middle of the game, but you can’t start with 21 pts and finish with 15 in the most important quarters of the game.
Josh help his own…
Joe was tired of dealing with Deng all over him. He never got into a groove. CHI is frustrating him…I like his no emotion though. And as the stats show, if he doesn’t have 20….we aren’t winning.
Al was so-so, because he made 2 bad turnovers in Q4.
M-V-Teague- nothing more to say
Zaza played over his head last night. He did well.
LD-his moves didn’t work last night. He takes guys out with 2 fouls in the 1st half…what is this, college?
Marvin, dude makes over 70K per game. 1 bucket in 9 min…..we aren’t moving him very easily, because he needs a fresh start/city. Why isn’t he as good as Deng?

If josh had flailed his arms and fell down and stayed down for a minute.
Then, yes Boozer would have been suspended, especially if a teammate stepped in and bucked Boozer in defense of Josh going down.
The refs would have had to review the tape to see what happened.
I don’t think they say the first elbow, just the retaliatory push back.
Boozer did that because he was still smarting from ZaZa’s blow to his forehead.
We did not: Carpe’ Diem (seize the day).
Let’s move on people, there is nothing to see and here and that is not why we lost the game. We did not play well in the 4th Q –
plain and simple. We did not execute the offense.
Blame the hawks for that.

our lineup of teague joe josh al twin will work for us, we need zaz to play like a man possesed downlow and absolutely zero in on drose driving, foul out if we have to, we cant let mvp score 30+ points with 20 comin from f-ing layups, activate etan and let him pick up fouls on mvp, no more layups its bs, also sub damien instead of marvin, if jamal cant find his shot dont feel obliged to wait for him to find it, put in damien like tibs put in brewer instead of korver, also plz do not resign jamal, let kirk takeover the 6th man spot and try to get that 7 footer, wheres that guy on here 2nd pick not a waste? sayn marvin is better than josh? go off urself u dont know ish bout bball, u r marvs cousin or knights relative

@303…to your point…not backin’ off my KA BOOM either but definitely enjoyin’ watchin’ THIS ‘team’ playin’ with heart and focus (most of the time)…which they had NOT down prior to the playoffs. so for that, as a fan, i’m thankful!!!
biggest surprise…Teague…knew he could ball of course but his composure is a surprise
next biggest…LD’s coachin’!!! for the most part i haven’t been bitchin’ about it (except ANY time Marvin is on the court and Zaza should have remained in last nite)
and there’s Josh!!! just shows why he is soooooo maddenin’ as a player. do i think he’s turned some kinda corner finally??? my answer is the same as before…i do NOT know.
at the moment my KA BOOM is compromised of Marvin never seein’ the court as a Hawk next season…Kirk takin’ JC’s role as 6th man. i think we would do really well in that role. and of course gettin’ a 5. Al’s post game and handles need real work. but i think this team could really benefit from some physical toughness. i think that would help with the mental makeup of this team. and Josh’s play just shows why this franchise finds it hard to give up on him. if LD is back, which now i think he will be then Josh is NOT goin’ anywhere. anyway, i still got my C4 but….;-)

Hawks fan – here are some points to think over:
1. The Hawks have found their point guard. I think it is funny that he was on there bench all the time. It’s funny how injuries give players the opportunity that they were not given before.
2. Crawford needs to figure how to score or draw the foul vs. Rose. His performance in game 6 and game 7 could determine if the Hawks try to resign him or let him go.
3. The Hawks could go after Nene if they do not resign Crawford. Better yet, would they resign Crawford and trade J. Smith for Nene?

His other claim to fame was this
And surely Drew isn’t crazy. There’s no doubt that if we get past the Bulls, that Teague should be the starter, with Hinrich coming off the bench. You bring the vet Hinrich off the bench, and all of a sudden, that 2nd unit looks pretty decent with Hinrich – Jamal – Marvin – and Zaza.
Teague needs the ball in his hands, but playing alongside Jamal will take it out of it. So put Hinrich on the floor with Jamal, so that if Jamal passes back to Kirk, he can shoot the jumper. Something Teague isn’t known for doing yet.
But keep Teague as the starter to give us that penetrating PG to play alongside JJ, and to help the “bigs”.

@Shawn:
I am not one complaining (too much) about the referring, but the facts you present are only semi-relevant at best. Just because the free throw attempts are near even doesn’t tell one that much. What if one team was making illegal contact twice as much as the other, but the free throws were even? Looking at the proportion of plays where illegal contact was made to plays were fouls were called, there would still be an awful disparity. It is the proportion that matters.
If you are having a hard time understanding these simple facts, here is an example.
Pretend Team A illegally contacted a player from Team B 50 times.
Now supposed Team B illegally contacted a player from Team A 25 times.
Now supposed the fouls called were even, say 22 fouls called against both teams. Would this be an “evenly called game”? No, it wouldn’t. If you were a member (or a fan of) Team B, you have every reason to be upset.

A) Retaining Jamal Crawford as a 6th man is pure foolishness. The man is tired of wasting his skills on the bench. JAMAL CRAWFORD SHOULD BE STARTING. Plus, the fact that the Hawks havent renegotiated Crawfords contract may be why Crawford is having sub-par performances. Jamal may be sulking until he is paid $100million dollars per season for his overrated skills.
B) Kirk should be traded for a decent big man. Kirk should have Scotty or McCoy beam him up to MARS and have him stay there until we decide what to do with him.
C) Teague should be the starting point guard (NO QUESTIONI ABOUT IT). Teague has proven in the Hawks-Bulls series that he is one of the 5 best players in the game today.
