Atlanta Hawks: Notes, quotes and links
8:00 pm May 9, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Some tidbits before I hop a flight to the Chi, where at least it’s warmer now . . .
- Before the Hawks left for Chicago today, L.D. said he’s not sure if he will use the Twin lineup for Game 5. My guess is that he will use it but didn’t want to let the Bulls know that more than 24 hours before game time.
- Drew on Twin not getting a rebound in 12 minutes: “He brings a presence. There are guys in this league that require special attention in keeping off the glass. Noah’s activity, to me he could be considered one of those guys. Sometimes it means Twin boxed him out and he’s not coming up with the ball. His first assignment is to get him boxed off and allow someone else to come up with it.”
- L.D. on another benefit of the Twin lineup: “Asking Josh to defend Noah at times, he’s much taller and much longer. It’s a tough assignment for him. Having him go against guy like Boozer who is real physical is also tough. Another physical body has been good for us. It frees up Al and Josh up to a certain extent.”
- The Hawks have more playoffs experience than the Bulls, both overall and as a group together. Maybe that’s giving them an edge.
- Smoove hears what you are saying when he winds up for Js. More on that from Josh: “I’ve been a pretty good perimeter shooter this whole season. If people have been here all season they know I’ve done it all year. People who are here for the special times don’t understand.”
- Josh also heard you repping at the end of Game 4: “It felt good at the end to hear the ‘A-T-L’ chants instead of ‘M-V-P’ chants. The cheering throughout the game, it felt good. It did a lot for us. It gave us something extra.”
- Josh on his game: “I wanted to be aggressive and play with a ball of energy. I played my game, played with confidence and rode the tidal wave of the crowd.”
- J.J. on teammates talking to Josh about playing that way: “We definitely stayed on him. When he puts his mind to it and is not settling and going to the basket, he’s tough to stop. He did it a few times and saw they were not even contesting it, so he kept doing it.”
- Jamal on Smoove’s eight assists: “To be a good passer you have to be a smart player, and Josh is a smart player. People get on him but we’ve got his back. He believes in himself and we believe in him.”
- Aside from one stretch of the third quarter, the Hawks had crisp ball movement and motion. “We moved the ball really well,” L.D. said. “We made plays out of double teams. We just shared the ball. We ended up with 23 assists. We try to keep harping on it as a staff and showing them video, that when do move the ball we are more effective than playing isolation.”
- At nbaplaybook.com, Sebastian Pruiti breaks down a familiar Hawks play from Game 4.
- L.D. on the traps against D-Rose: “Chances are you are going to be in some type of rotation. You have got to be on point with it. Last night we did a good job with our rotations, whether with double teams or getting broken down off the dribble [and giving] help. With Rose on the floor, changes are he is going to put you int that situation and we have to make sure we react to it and are in good spots.”
- Teague’s attacking style makes Atlanta’s closing lineup tough to guard. Now there are five scoring threats on the floor and three of them can make plays off the dribble. Add in Al’s shooting ability and Smoove’s slashing and the Bulls will have to be sharp to account for everyone–assuming, of course, the Hawks share the ball and play to their strengths.
- “With Jeff on the floor because he brings the speed and quickness and he has the ability to make a shot, it causes havoc,” L.D. said. “Their game plan is similar to ours as far as making sure they can contain us on the dribble and keep us out of the paint area. With Jeff and his ability to get in there it opens up a whole new dynamic. We certainly want him to stay in attack mode. You’ve got five guys out there that are attackers in their own way.”
- L.D. on Teague pulling the ball out instead of driving into traffic late in Game 4: “Really, really smart move. During the timeout, I told him and acknowledged that was a smart, smart move on his behalf. He made a veteran decision on a couple of those breaks. On the other hand, Jamal throwing that lob. . . .”
- Drew on if Teague is playing more confidently because he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder: “Still have Jamal over there if you want to talk about he has that ‘look over his shoulder’ mentality. There is somebody over there I can replace him with. I think it has been more [Teague thinking], ‘I am going to accept this challenge and this opportunity. I am playing against the MVP of the league and this is my time to shine.’ That’s the impression I get.”
- More Drew on Teague vs. Rose: “Derrick Rose is good, it’s no fluke he’s MVP. But clearly Jeff Teague is not taking a step back as far as the challenge. He’s attacking with just as much aggression. The difference is Rose is going to have the ball in his hands more and put up more shots. Jeff is more of facilitator and attacks at opportune times.”
- Drew on the Bulls matching Korver on Teague late: “I don’t know what their game strategy is as far as throwing Korver in there, whether it’s putting a bigger body on him. With Korver on him I like his chances to get to the basket rather than Rose on him. We just want him to stay in attack mode.”
- Josh on the spirited discussions in huddles: “We are screaming at each other because it’s in the moment. We want each other to do so good and we want everybody to be on the same page. Even thought it may not come out the same way in that particular moment, we understand the message. It’s not how it’s presented. We understand everyone in this locker room loves each other like brothers. Everybody takes up for each other but you have some moments where you have to do some self-checking. No one is sensitive, no one feels like it’s personal, and we just keep trying.”
- Jamal: “As far as the mental toughness, we can take a team’s really good effort and bounce back. We handle adversity better. In the past when adversity came we went our separate ways but now I think it actually pulls us closer together.”
- Hinrich is improving but he hasn’t done any court work. Today he was on one of those balancing things the P.T. had me using when I blew out my frickin Achilles’ three years ago”
- Hinrich says he could return if the Hawks advance but don’t expect him to play against the Bulls. “There’s still no anticipation of expecting him back this series,” L.D. said.
- With all of the upsets in the playoffs, the Hawks are starting to talk about their chances of making a run.
- “Memphis is up 2-1 on Oklahoma City,” Josh said. “Dallas, nobody would have expected it. It’s wide open. Anybody can take it. A new champion is going to be crowned.”
- “These teams that are left, anybody can win it,” Jamal said.

The biggest problem is not one person on here can definitely say how we will play tomorrow
3 choices:
1) We play huge and win by 8 (VERY unlikely)
2) We show some tenacity but their shooters are on and we lose by 12 (likely)
3) We lay an egg in the 2nd quarter and lose 99-76
What do you all think?
1, 2, or 3?.

What Hawks team will show up tonight? The jump shooting ‘one and out’ unit or the hard charging ‘force the ball to the rim’ Hawks?
We know what we want to see, but like PA man Holmon said on the radio today, hard to predict if we will see the same team 2 games in a row.
Since the 7 game series was created, and with teams tied 2-2, whoever wins Game 5 wins the series 83 percent of the time!
Flash back to ‘88 however, and the Hawks defied critics with a Game 5 win, with Game 6 in the Omni……we all know what happened then.
We are so close to being so respected around the league, no one here wants to seen this thing end so fast.
Do the ‘good’ Hawks have 2 games left in them?

Marvin “booty azz” Williams has to be a difference maker immediately, or L.D. must bench him early. He has been mostly, a liability. J.J. -don’t get down on your self-but the offense can’t be run through you. Tonight’s game-if played right and properly executed should come down to an OT win for the Hawks.

Poll ? The odds are with CHI….
I dont want to see it, but……this team is anything but good consistent.
Probably option 3, as we will not be focused on all the right things.
I have no problem being wrong either……the thought of the A-T-L being a basketball city just consumes me! Will talk radio become more balanced going forward?

Look for Josh Smith and Al Horford to come out with the same fire and consistency and Joe to be able to make plays out of double teams and single coverage if the Hawks come out with Collins and Zaza.
Defensively, the formula last game was that Rose played extra minutes and was extra agressive leaving his teammates out to dry.
Thibodeau felt forced to play him extra minutes because half their offense is Noah Boozer and Deng crashing the Bulls’ missed shots.
When we countered with Smith, Horford and Collins helping out it made them waste energy. Then Zaza came in and amped up the energy with no drop off from Collins. Eventually Bulls starters sit and Hawks continue throwing waves of consistent offense off of double teams and single coverage and boxing out and attacking the boards.
Great fundamental basketball.

I know this has been belabored to some degree but I am still amazed at the lack of playing time Jeff Teague has gotten to this point over two years!! Woody was understandable to some degree b/c he is Woody…LD??? I mean it is PATENTLY obvious that Teague is a quality NBA staring PG…not without weaknesses but certaintly a quality player. It is not that he was not starting…he got 12 DNP in regular season and 4 MORE in the playoffs!! Could any player become good under those circumstances. The one time he was given extended minutes for several games was on the West Coast trip when Hinrich got hurt…and he was very effective. We have suffered through watching Mike Bibby age not gracefully while he was sitting there on the bench???

Now back to reality….
This game has to be won. Period. Can’t lose this game and even hope to win the series.
What team will show up? There is no way to know, but if one had to bet, smart to go with the 30 ft jumper josh smith team and about a 20 point loss….it stinks to be conditioned to think this way, but after 23 years, what else do the intelligent expect?

With the win and the Hawks spirited effort. With Josh’s unbelievably heady play and all-star caliber performance. With Jeff Teague’s continued dominant performance, we all FORGOT to discuss one of the BIGGEST moments in Game 4.
When JOE JOHNSON literally BROKE KEITH BOGAN’S ANKLES. That was a sick move that Joe put on that cat. I really didn’t think Joe had it in him to handle the rock like that. I actually felt bad for that kid Bogans.

On a 1-to-10 scale, rate Teague’s performance. Also, what’s next?
Michael Wallace, ESPN.com: Given the circumstance the second-year guard stepped into entering this series, Teague deserves a 10. You could make the case that he’s the Hawks’ second-most important player behind Joe Johnson. And he’s been their most consistent performer this series. As far as expectations from here on out, I’d give him an 8. He won’t win battles with Rose, but he’ll make him work and won’t make many mistakes while doing so.
Matt McHale, Bullsbythehorns: His performance, based on what was expected coming in, has been about a 10. I mean, he played nine minutes total in the first round. I expect him to be around an 8 for the rest of the series, if only because Chicago’s defense is keying on Joe Johnson, Al Hoford, Josh Smith and Jamal Crawford. That’s creating openings for Teague. Essentially, he’s benefiting from all the attention those guys are getting.
Bret LaGree, Hoopinion: Ten for performance, 6 for expectations going forward. Given the lack of confidence his organization showed him over the past two seasons and the lack of preparation they provided him, Teague’s performance in this series has been extraordinary. It’s also been convincing, so I expect him to remain an above average player for the next two or three games.
Zach Harper, Daily Dime Live: Teague’s performance has been a 10 based on expectations going in. I don’t know that many saw him playing this poised, bothering Rose with his defense and matching the MVP’s athleticism on so many plays. I expect him to be a 6 the rest of the way. This improbable run should regress to the mean with the pressure mounting the rest of the way.
Nick Friedell, ESPN Chicago: 8 — for the series so far. When Kirk Hinrich went down, I thought this series was over. I didn’t think there was any way Teague could produce the way he has. He has given the Hawks a huge lift and is gaining more confidence by the day. He’s earned the respect of the Bulls very quickly.
A 4 for the rest of the series. When Rose sets his mind to slowing a point guard down, he does it. Just ask Chris Paul and Deron Williams. I think Rose will take the challenge of shutting down Teague personally now that the Hawks guard has had a couple big games on him. If he does that, it will slow down any offensive rhythm the Hawks got into during Game 4..

Let LD tell the Hawks this is one of the most important games in the history of the franchise, and no doubt this team lays an egg. They don’t even know what kind of team they are….they have tried to answer it many times, and they always say, “I don’t know what happened. We should have played better.”
So here we have another coach who has saved his job by this team showing up in the playoffs. Have we been here before? So since LD is going to be here, because the ASG is going to do the right thing, we are going to have to fight with what we have instead of wishing for more weapons.
Going forward, we have to be the aggressor tonight.

MC, I’m expecting a dog fight tonight…I’m sure the whistle will blow early and often for the Bulls…to make up for the blown call on Rose…ADD IN THE ROWDY FANS…and things unravel quick…and game four will be a distance memory.
I hope the Hawks are mentally prepared for the barrage of physical punishment…they will endure…CUZ the Bulls don’t take games off…and they ain’t going to give up…we will have to continue to perform at a very high level…to seriouly have a chance to win this series…I hope the Hawks ain’t too far gone…to remember that.

@ O’Brien
Teague definitely gets a 10 for his play in this series so far. The dude is averaging 16 points – 3.8 assists – 1.5 stls – and is shooting 52% FG? He’s playing 41 minutes a game, after being literally buried all season?
Only Joe Johnson, who is averaging 21 points – 3 assists – 2.3 stls – and shooting 54% FG ( 67% 3FG ) is having a better series than Teague. The kid has been excellent in these playoffs.
Even the biggest Teague supporters wouldn’t have predicted those types of numbers for Teague during this series. He’s had maybe one bad quarter the entire series. The 3 guard lineup that we put out there now is a potent offensive lineup that forces people to guard 3 guys that can take you off the dribble. And you still have to worry about Smith and Horford.

Joe is a deserving all-star. We are hitching our wagon to him for 5 more years.
We need to take advantage of both the C’s and Laker’s struggles and go out there and play beyond our normal expectations.
Simply put, everything is being laid out there for us.
Here you have the upstart Bulls, getting it together in 1 year…
You have the Heat, you have them heading to the ECF…..
It’s not supposed to be that easy to be able to form a team in 1 year and POW!….ECF.
The Hawks need to show a complete team commitment and take advantage of the mismatches they have. That big lineup got us off to a good agressive start……LD, don’t change that lineup. Marvin is in a good spot down the row from you.

The keys to tonights game runs as follows;
LD- we must trap D-Rose hard early and for him to give up the ball in Pick and roll situations, and recover fast enough to force the other bulls to actually put the ball on the floor and create shots for themselves. If we do this early in the game the pressure will mount on the D-Rose and teammates
Josh- Please dont try to prove to the world that you are the next Larry Bird and continue to slash and drive those lanes when the ball swings to you, Use your athletism and DUNK THE DAMN BASKETBALL
AL- please get physical! Noah has been punking you the whole series , block out and get physical, you guys can start back being friends after the series is ova
Joe & Jamal – Dont force the issue tonight , pass the ball outta the double teams and cut
Jeff- attack, attack, attack

I’m pretty sure LD’s planning on going with Collins again tonight. I just don’t think he wants to show his cards. I thought it was pretty dumb of him to voice his concerns about letting Rose get into the lane free of contact, because that just signaled to the officials that we’ll be going after him. I think with this situation, you don’t want to give the Bulls any ideas about how we’ll approach this game
Or, he could very well be contemplating going back to Marvin for this crucial game. If he does, I won’t get it. I think there were more than a few here that were suggesting we go big before the Bulls series even started. Some were mentioning it before we even officially wrapped up the Magic series when we were speculating what this matchup would look like.
I think you stick with this lineup, and you keep capitalize on that Smith vs Deng matchup. Simple as that. Should the Bulls adjust and go with a bigger lineup of their own, we’ll see. But, until they adjust to that mismatch, I think we expose it and capitalize on it. Smith needs to remain patient in the post against Deng. Don’t rush to get the ball up so quick. Back Deng down and get good deep position before going up. That should get Smith either a better look for himself or he’ll draw the double to set up other guys.
Huge game tonight. Hope they bring the energy.

Off subject, but has anyone seen the new Wizards’ uniforms? They are going back to old school from the old Bullets’ days. They look fantastic. The Sixers, Warriors, and now the Wizards have dramatically improved their uniforms by going back to their roots. If we could just go back to the old school Nique uniforms, it would be a tremendous improvement. The current uniforms are extremely dull and boring.

I love your jumpers, esp when you are knocking them down left and right, but when u know deep deep down inside when u are off, all we ask is if driving to the lane can open that basket back up for you for your jumpers again. We love the ‘ALL AROUND JOSH’ (the shooter/slasher/posting/rebounding/hustling/dunking Josh)instead of the ‘ONE DIMENSIONAL JOSH’ (shooter/shooter/shooter Josh). Handle your business out there Josh cause no matter how much money Joe gets or all the creative moves Jamal has or the All-Star Horford darn near perfect outside shooting he provides, THE HAWKS CAN NOT AND WILL NOT ADVANCE WITHOUT THE “ALL AROUND JOSH SMITH’” U betta believe it, BABY!!
