Atlanta Hawks: Notes, quotes and links
8:00 pm May 9, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Some tidbits before I hop a flight to the Chi, where at least it’s warmer now . . .
- Before the Hawks left for Chicago today, L.D. said he’s not sure if he will use the Twin lineup for Game 5. My guess is that he will use it but didn’t want to let the Bulls know that more than 24 hours before game time.
- Drew on Twin not getting a rebound in 12 minutes: “He brings a presence. There are guys in this league that require special attention in keeping off the glass. Noah’s activity, to me he could be considered one of those guys. Sometimes it means Twin boxed him out and he’s not coming up with the ball. His first assignment is to get him boxed off and allow someone else to come up with it.”
- L.D. on another benefit of the Twin lineup: “Asking Josh to defend Noah at times, he’s much taller and much longer. It’s a tough assignment for him. Having him go against guy like Boozer who is real physical is also tough. Another physical body has been good for us. It frees up Al and Josh up to a certain extent.”
- The Hawks have more playoffs experience than the Bulls, both overall and as a group together. Maybe that’s giving them an edge.
- Smoove hears what you are saying when he winds up for Js. More on that from Josh: “I’ve been a pretty good perimeter shooter this whole season. If people have been here all season they know I’ve done it all year. People who are here for the special times don’t understand.”
- Josh also heard you repping at the end of Game 4: “It felt good at the end to hear the ‘A-T-L’ chants instead of ‘M-V-P’ chants. The cheering throughout the game, it felt good. It did a lot for us. It gave us something extra.”
- Josh on his game: “I wanted to be aggressive and play with a ball of energy. I played my game, played with confidence and rode the tidal wave of the crowd.”
- J.J. on teammates talking to Josh about playing that way: “We definitely stayed on him. When he puts his mind to it and is not settling and going to the basket, he’s tough to stop. He did it a few times and saw they were not even contesting it, so he kept doing it.”
- Jamal on Smoove’s eight assists: “To be a good passer you have to be a smart player, and Josh is a smart player. People get on him but we’ve got his back. He believes in himself and we believe in him.”
- Aside from one stretch of the third quarter, the Hawks had crisp ball movement and motion. “We moved the ball really well,” L.D. said. “We made plays out of double teams. We just shared the ball. We ended up with 23 assists. We try to keep harping on it as a staff and showing them video, that when do move the ball we are more effective than playing isolation.”
- At nbaplaybook.com, Sebastian Pruiti breaks down a familiar Hawks play from Game 4.
- L.D. on the traps against D-Rose: “Chances are you are going to be in some type of rotation. You have got to be on point with it. Last night we did a good job with our rotations, whether with double teams or getting broken down off the dribble [and giving] help. With Rose on the floor, changes are he is going to put you int that situation and we have to make sure we react to it and are in good spots.”
- Teague’s attacking style makes Atlanta’s closing lineup tough to guard. Now there are five scoring threats on the floor and three of them can make plays off the dribble. Add in Al’s shooting ability and Smoove’s slashing and the Bulls will have to be sharp to account for everyone–assuming, of course, the Hawks share the ball and play to their strengths.
- “With Jeff on the floor because he brings the speed and quickness and he has the ability to make a shot, it causes havoc,” L.D. said. “Their game plan is similar to ours as far as making sure they can contain us on the dribble and keep us out of the paint area. With Jeff and his ability to get in there it opens up a whole new dynamic. We certainly want him to stay in attack mode. You’ve got five guys out there that are attackers in their own way.”
- L.D. on Teague pulling the ball out instead of driving into traffic late in Game 4: “Really, really smart move. During the timeout, I told him and acknowledged that was a smart, smart move on his behalf. He made a veteran decision on a couple of those breaks. On the other hand, Jamal throwing that lob. . . .”
- Drew on if Teague is playing more confidently because he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder: “Still have Jamal over there if you want to talk about he has that ‘look over his shoulder’ mentality. There is somebody over there I can replace him with. I think it has been more [Teague thinking], ‘I am going to accept this challenge and this opportunity. I am playing against the MVP of the league and this is my time to shine.’ That’s the impression I get.”
- More Drew on Teague vs. Rose: “Derrick Rose is good, it’s no fluke he’s MVP. But clearly Jeff Teague is not taking a step back as far as the challenge. He’s attacking with just as much aggression. The difference is Rose is going to have the ball in his hands more and put up more shots. Jeff is more of facilitator and attacks at opportune times.”
- Drew on the Bulls matching Korver on Teague late: “I don’t know what their game strategy is as far as throwing Korver in there, whether it’s putting a bigger body on him. With Korver on him I like his chances to get to the basket rather than Rose on him. We just want him to stay in attack mode.”
- Josh on the spirited discussions in huddles: “We are screaming at each other because it’s in the moment. We want each other to do so good and we want everybody to be on the same page. Even thought it may not come out the same way in that particular moment, we understand the message. It’s not how it’s presented. We understand everyone in this locker room loves each other like brothers. Everybody takes up for each other but you have some moments where you have to do some self-checking. No one is sensitive, no one feels like it’s personal, and we just keep trying.”
- Jamal: “As far as the mental toughness, we can take a team’s really good effort and bounce back. We handle adversity better. In the past when adversity came we went our separate ways but now I think it actually pulls us closer together.”
- Hinrich is improving but he hasn’t done any court work. Today he was on one of those balancing things the P.T. had me using when I blew out my frickin Achilles’ three years ago”
- Hinrich says he could return if the Hawks advance but don’t expect him to play against the Bulls. “There’s still no anticipation of expecting him back this series,” L.D. said.
- With all of the upsets in the playoffs, the Hawks are starting to talk about their chances of making a run.
- “Memphis is up 2-1 on Oklahoma City,” Josh said. “Dallas, nobody would have expected it. It’s wide open. Anybody can take it. A new champion is going to be crowned.”
- “These teams that are left, anybody can win it,” Jamal said.

“The eye test tells me that the Hawks play better overall with Collins on the court, but I don’t know exactly why.”
Things that don’t show up in the box score. Hard fouls on people coming down the lane. Box outs, even if he doesn’t get the board. Sealing off his man to create a driving lane for whoever has the ball. Things like that.

Dude, if you’re OKC, and you have 2 of the league’s budding superstars, you gotta hit one of those three opportunities to win the game.
They had an opportunity in regulation.
One in OT 1.
And another in OT 2.

“Najeh Davenpoop – why do you assume that jeff could do what he is doing now from day one ? ”
Because literally every time he has gotten a chance to play he has played well. Maybe not this well, but certainly well enough to earn a spot in the rotation off the bench.
No, I am not a former NBA point guard. But I do have some experience having to develop other people’s talent as well as having my own talent developed, in fields unrelated to basketball. And one thing I have consistently seen is that experience is the greatest teacher. I have yet to encounter any aspect of life where someone is better served watching and learning as opposed to learning from experience, other than situations where learning from experience might result in a life or death situation.
I think it’s safe to say nobody was going to die if Jeff Teague committed a turnover in a regular season game. I think it would even be safe to say that Teague offered enough from day one with his ability to get in the paint and his defensive skills to where he wouldn’t have cost the Hawks any wins, and perhaps may have even added to the Hawks’ win total, if he had been given a consistent role from day one.
And anyway, I have seen enough former players say and do enough provably stupid things to where I don’t buy the argument that LD knows more than everyone else about point guard development. I guess by your logic Isiah Thomas is a great evaluator of talent because he was talented.
“Im glad LD is not doing the “fans way ‘ because the fans ways is what created Marvin and Josh ”
I don’t even get what this statement is supposed to mean. Other than being in the same high school graduating class Marvin and Smoove have absolutely nothing in common. What “created” Marvin was the fact that his talent was severely overrated in the first place, and what “created” Smoove was the overconfidence and stubbornness that he had from day one.

Grizzlies ran out of gas. Even still, you have to come out of this feeling confident if you are a Grizzlies fan. If it’s this hard for OKC to beat you, at home or on the road, you gotta feel pretty confident that you can pull off one more road win to regain control of this series.

Physical play is vital in the playoffs….you HAVE to respect Collins when he is in your path, I think is part of it….I was at that crap Friday, I was screaming for them to act like they werent scared to confront somebody on their way to the basket…put some fear in Rose so he knows when he comes driving in that he better look out because somebody is going to put him on the floor hard once in awhile and foul him hard often….use a rotation like on Dwight….make him stay outside and if he comes in he better dish it because hack-a-Shaq is now hack-a-Rose coming from our biggest guys..
hell Zaza isnt getting any playing time any way let him and Collins be the enforcers and when they get in foul trouble, we got some more to roll out there.
Got to Box out against the Bulls! MUST box out and seal off….good D…play good D and against the Bulls, box out, seal the lanes and play plysical and on offense drive in as much as possible. When Josh is driving in with Teague, it makes it so much tougher for them to stop us…if they pull it together we will be in the eastern finals and they can. Hawks have the talent…but will they play smart and not just shoot jumpers with 15 seconds left on the shot clock? Jump shots are inconsistent and there are off nights and easier to defend and Josh has been a self-check…..cant have any more off nights in this series….drive the lane Josh…just like Sunday but even more….they cant stop you! and it opens up the entire offense.
I am really taking a liking to Drew…he has stepped it up in the playoffs and using his authority with the guys and they seem to be responding. They better listen because he is speakign the truth, no matter what they think. They better buy in and if Sunday is a result, hopefully it is now sunk in their thick skulls. Drew appears to be taking control and making this his team with him being in charge but earning it and not demanding it. The guys should listen to him and hopefully he has earned their respect by now. He has earned mine.

And in regards to my 1:34 post, the contention that Teague was better served learning from the bench would be a lot more justifiable if he had someone competent starting ahead of him. For him to be sitting behind the hollowed out cadaver of Mike Bibby is inexcusable.

By the way what happened to Nate Robinson? First the Celtics dump him — they maybe could have used him tonight — and now he’s apparently warming the bench for OKC. Is he injured? There are obvious issues with playing him, both because he’s not a true point guard and because he’s short — but that doesn’t mean he can’t help a team particularly during stretches where scoring is an issue.

Slimjr Boston beat Detroit in the ECF in 1987… they beat the Hawks in the second round. The Atlanta Hawks have never advanced to the conference finals. Not Nique’s Hawks, not the Hawks of Smitty/Mookie/Dikembe. If this squad can get past CHI to the ECF that will be historic and you will have to give Las Vegas Larry his props. No Atlanta team has ever made it that far.

Looking back at all the players that were supposed to come out of college and are now going back for fear of a lockout. We chose a great year to give up our #1 pick.
Now I’m not saying it should have ever come from that just look at Teague play now and we also had to give up Jordan Crawford who is going to be great in the future, but at least we won’t miss out on anything great for our pick this year.

Correct Jae Evolution, that was my point about the Hawks not being on the hook for a rookie scale contract for this year’s draft, which is very talent poor after the top two picks. Very little chance the Hawks would have drafted somebody who could contribute more right away than a veteran minimum player like Damien.

Marvin/Zaza/Jason/Damien account for about a half good rotation player when you put them together.

I mean, forget for a second that the organist plays all the rap songs in Philips (probably to appease all the OTP hip hop haters who buy the expensive tickets). Forget for a second that the organist insists on playing “All Of The Lights” all the time during this series even though Kanye is from Chicago and yet never plays anything by Jeezy or T.I. or Ludacris or better yet someone like Outkast or Goodie Mob. Sh-t I wouldn’t mind Waka Flocka at this point.
These fools in Philips still insist on playing “duh-duh-duh-duh clap-clap-clapclapclap” every now and then, which only works when your team name is two syllables. They actually played that when the Lakers came here, and seeing as how more than half the crowd was Lakers fans, they all started the “Let’s Go Lakers” chant. I mean this is elementary sh-t. I’d rather hear “everybody clap your hands” than that, and “everybody clap your hands” is the laziest bullsh-t anyone plays at any sporting event. Seriously whoever runs the sound at Philips must be a f-cking idiot of epic proportions.
Just from watching on TV I can tell Memphis sh-ts on the Hawks when it comes to this. I have already heard them play Three Six Mafia and Eightball & MJG during these playoff games.

Just because Teague is playing really well this series does not mean he would have played really well in the Orlando series. One reason being, with Dwight Howard clogging the lane, who knows if Teague would have been able to finish his drives.
Therefore, I’m glad we had Hinrich for the Orlando series. Best case scenario would be to have both Hinrich and Teague healthy, because the more options the better. But the blame still goes mostly to LD (imo) for not playing Teague more consistently all year.

Bulls need to ramp up attack effort against Hawks in Game 5
By Herb Gould hgould@suntimes.com May 10, 2011 02:11AM
Is this really only the second round?

So much has taken place in the last nine days, it’s hard to believe this is only the conference semi-finals.
Derrick Rose and Tom Thibodeau hitting the coach-of-the-year/MVP daily double. The Bulls stubbing their toe at home in Game 1 against the Atlanta Hawks, only their sixth loss at the United Center all season.
ATLANTA, GA – MAY 08: Tom Thibodeau converses with Derrick Rose #1 of the Chicago Bulls against the Atlanta Hawks in Game Four of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the 2011 NBA Playoffs at Phillips Arena on May 8, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. Rose delivering a career-high 44 in Atlanta to get the Bulls back on track. Forward Josh Smith turning snickers into baskets as the Hawks made it a 2-2 series with a shocker on Sunday night.
What’s next?
Now the Bulls find out if all that energy they invested in securing home court pays off. Now they learn if they’re ready to take the heat of living up to the expectations that accompany a No. 1 seed.
Related Stories
Noah gets his reward, but what about Deng?
“We’ll have to see,’’ Rose said softly after practice Monday. “[Tonight] will tell — will tell everything.’’
No question, there are tweaks. Rose wants to make simple plays that find the open man when the Hawks double-team him: “They’re doubling me. So it should be easy offense.’’
And Thibodeau wants everybody to hit their marks on defense: “The defense is five guys tied together. If one guy is missing his part, we’re gonna look bad.’’
But the real key, the Bulls believe, is intensity. Heart. Playing hard. The edge that has been their watchword all season.
“They played with a lot more of an edge,’’ Bulls forward Taj Gibson said of the 100-88 loss in Game 4. “It hurts because we’ve put in a lot of work. But we have to put in a lot more because we really got embarrassed.’’
As much as the Bulls love playing at the UC, where they’re 40-6 this season, there’s some performance anxiety, Gibson said.
“It seems like when we play at home, there’s a lot more pressure,’’ he said. “It’s not a bad thing, but a lot of people seem to think that coming home is the answer. Coming home is always good, but it’s not going to change the game. It’s up to us to come in and do what we do best —and that’s just play hard.’’
As this series has progressed, fans and media have gained a better understanding of what the Bulls already knew. That for all their ups and downs, the Hawks are gifted scorers who have the athleticism to be a tough out when they’re interested. And they seem very interested.
“The talent is equal,’’ Rose said. “They played a great game Sunday. They really got after us. We just have to see how we respond. We just have to play harder.’’
And what is the Bulls’ mood? They’re seeing red, Rose said.
“We can’t wait to play,’’ Rose said. “All of us are mad about the effort we put in the last game. We know it wasn’t good enough. Now we’re playing back in our building. The atmosphere is going to be unbelievable.’’
To Rose, this is not pressure.
“Not at all,’’ he said. “If anything, all of us are anxious right now because we know we can do so much better.’’
For all the Bulls’ troubles Sunday in Atlanta, the game was tied at 84 with four minutes left on a night when forward Luol Deng (5-for-14) and guard Kyle Korver (1-for-8) weren’t finding the net along with Rose (12-for-32).
The Bulls also believe that the inadvertent-whistle issue, in which referee Bennett Salvatore later apologized for not giving Rose a three-shot foul call, wasn’t the only time the officials should have been whistle-blowers. The Bulls thought Rose took some pretty good shots — literally and physically — on some drives that rolled off the rim.
“Derrick has to continue to drive with force,’’ Thibodeau said. “If he continues to do that, he’ll get calls.’’
Rose also dropped the hint.
“I was taking the ball extremely hard,’’ he said. “I guess they weren’t fouling.’’
Whether the refs owe the Bulls one is open to debate. The whistles tend to be friendlier at home, anyway.
Whether the Bulls owe the Hawks one is not open to debate.
“We just have to jump on them from the beginning,’’ Rose said, “and see how they play then.’’

Yes Derrick, don’t out grow your britches young man, you will find out very soon, in less that 12 hours about how the Hawks will play than.
Hard to believe the #1 team in the NBA is crying about one missed foul call? Why not just say, “So he missed a call, big deal it all evens out at the end of the game, we just have to play better.”
Thibs, “Derrick took it inside pretty hard and got knocked down, but no fouls called.” Well, maybe Derrick ran into an immovable object creating contact that he initiated, that is not a foul – that’s called insanity when you run into a brick wall with your forehead over and over and expect different results.
Make a play or go home! I say, go home! The inexperience of The Bulls are showing its cracks. They still believe this is the regular season – don’t they?

“As for tonight’s game, I hope LD has a backup plan in mind already. Rose and the Bulls will make an adjustment to the traps that we are sending at Rose in game 4, so LD should have a counteraction up his sleeve already.”

OB, I say trap better – try to steal it or get a turn over. That’s all we need to do, is do what we do better. Let them worry about how they’re gonna’ beat that.
If they do, the obvious reaction is help defense if the ball swings to the open man close in. If the open man comes to the ball? That’s even better, because know they are both in the back court and killing clock.
I’m am not a believer in making unnecessary adjustments before warranted. I know you said a back up response. But, there is no magic offense or defense that no one at this level has never seen before.
Just play harder than them. I think we as fans tend ot over think and over analyze a silly game of basketball. It’s like music, there are only 9 notes on a sheet of music. Just play!

Excellent synopsis and advice:
” There are only 9 notes on a sheet of music.
Just play!”

“Najeh instead of just playing the rap song they make the organist play it.”
Another example of the ASG doing things on the cheap. They do that to keep from having to pay the artist. If they play the original song the artist will have to be paid, if they have an organist play it they either don’t have to pay, or the amount is much less.

“We just have to jump on them from the beginning,’’ Rose said, “and see how they play then.’’
HOPE WE DON’T TANK IT TONIGHT
