Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 100, Bulls 88
1:17 am May 9, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Save for the nitpicks of a few blown transition chances, a handful of fumble-fingered turnovers and some missed Js from Smoove (before he started beasting) and some shots Al passed up (before he started dunking), what was there not to like about the Hawks tonight?
- They shared the ball. They defended. They rebounded. They competed. They didn’t allow D-Rose easy passage to the basket. They finished furiously as their fans roared and the Bulls faltered.
- “I think we played like a desperate team,” L.D. said.
- It was a fine team effort with lots of standout individual performances.
- J.J. decisively danced through Chicago’s defense and may not have made a bad decision all night. Al finally got physical with Noah. Teague looked like a seasoned pro. Jamal didn’t force it against double teams and made just enough key baskets to keep the Bulls honest.
- And in the second half Smoove showed how he can control a game by defending, rebounding, running and attacking the basket.
- Josh had steamed for two days about the criticism for his Game 3 performance. Maybe a ticked off Smoove is the best thing for the Hawks.
- “He has taken the criticism well,” Al said. “I think he has kind of taken it all in. It’s been the media but it’s [also] been the coaches, it’s been us telling him. He kind of put it together and finally we saw what he is capable of doing. We need him to keep that intensity.”
- The boos for Smoove turned into cheers by the end.
- “When people don’t understand the game and don’t know the game it really doesn’t faze me,” Josh said. “When people are here night in and night our cheering for the Atlanta Hawks, minus the postseason, for the playoffs, that’s what matters to me. And my teammates matter extremely more than anybody else. They believe in me and have confidence in my game. They told me to stay with it.”
- It was Smoove, Teague and Al on the attack in the fourth quarter as the Bulls were fixated on J.J. and Jamal. L.D. will have plenty of video to show the Hawks how they can get high-percentage shots from ball movement, quick decisions by the guards and the bigs cutting to the basket.
- “Something has to be open,” Jamal said. “You get two guys on you something has to be open. I thought Joe and myself did a good job with that tonight.”
- D-Rose did what he could. He scored seven straight points to keep Chicago in it early in the fourth. He got to the basket against good challenges for scores that tied it at 82-82 and 84-84.
- But after Teague’s tough layup, Josh forced Rose to miss on a drive. Josh passed ahead to Teague, who dropped it off for Al’s layup on the break.
- “That was big just staying with it and guys not getting discouraged with Derrick hitting his shots and sticking with our game plan,” Al said. “I think the energy was there. I don’t think we had that so much [in Game 3].”
- “We knew that Rose would try to take it over at that point, which he’s so good at,”L.D. said. “We had to make a conscious effort of everybody zeroing in on him. And I tell you, there were times when I thought we had him corralled but he was able to get in there.”
- The Hawks erupted for 33 points in the final period. “I didn’t like our defense in the fourth quarter,” Tom Thiibodeau said. “I thought we drove the ball hard but didn’t get a call, but that’s the way it goes.”
- The Hawks dogged Rose with double teams. It looked to me like the Bulls actually had good spacing and ball movement but Atlanta’s rotations were sharp and persistent all night so Rose’s supporting cast was held down.
- Korver missed a couple open looks but never really could shake free despite running around through all those screens. Noah had 11 rebounds but didn’t get the putbacks. Deng was 1 of 4 after halftime.
- Rose scored 13 of Chicago’s 19 points in the fourth quarter while taking 12 of their 17 shots.
- “It was a tough game tonight but we’ll make no excuses,” Rose said. “If they double team me in the next game, we’ll just have to do a better job of executing. I had some turnovers in the fourth quarter that hurt is and we didn’t play as well down the stretch.”
- The “big” lineup paid dividends but not the one with Twin. He lasted just 12 minutes, didn’t get a rebound and had problems chasing Boozer in the crossmatch but Zaza had nine rebounds in 25 minutes.
- “Give them credit,” Boozer said. “Their bigs were very active.”
- Marvin was just 0 for 5 but he was solid defensively early. He had a couple blocked shots at the rim, one of them against Rose.
- Teague is more impressive with each game. Tonight he had a good feel for when to attack and when to pull the ball out. “He played like a professional,” Jamal said. “A couple times he controlled the tempo in big moments. It helped us. He runs the show. He’s always keeping pressure on the defense. We need that.”
- Joe didn’t play a big role in the furious finish (except of course for drawing attention that helped his teammates) but he was superb through three quarters: 22 points, 8 of 11 field goals, four assists, one turnover. When he dribbled it was purposeful. He got away from pressure to the middle of the floor where the traps weren’t as effective.
- The Hawks started fast, a development that surprised Damien: “I ain’t gonna lie, I was kind of nervous at shootaround today because the mood was very somber. There wasn’t a whole lot of energy. It kind of felt like we were down 3-0 and about to play the Michael Jordan Bulls. But we responded well.”
- Ref Bennett Salvatore said he didn’t mean to blow his whistle with 2:27 to go on a play where Jamal made contact with Rose. “I didn’t think it was a foul,” Salvatore told a pool reporter. “Having watched the replay after the game, it was a foul and I should have called it. I made a mistake.”
- Smoove won the jump ball and on the ensuing possession passed to Al for a dunk that made it 92-84.
- “At that time of the game, I’ve never seen an inadvertent whistle,” Thibodeau said. “But Bennett is a good official who said he missed the call. He’s still a good official. He’s human and we all make mistakes.”

“@Najeh-since you were at the game: did the crowd yell “NO”whenever Marvin tried to shoot and got blocked 4/5 times.I know I was…..”
Haha… I think at this point everyone just accepts that Marvin is going to suck. It’s not even a surprise or anything anymore. With Smoove, part of the reason people get frustrated is because people have high expectations for him (in some cases too high in my opinion). Is it really possible to get disappointed by someone for whom expectations are already at rock bottom? That’s where Marvin is right now.

The crazy thing about tonight’s game is that nearly all the key players involved can play better. Smoove can shoot a lot better than 8/22, and that includes shots he missed inside as well as the several jumpers he bricked. Joe played well in the half court but he blew a couple of transition opportunities with bad passes. Al passed up plenty of makeable shots in this game and finished with only five boards. Teague was solid but nowhere near as aggressive as he was in the last few games. Jamal took plenty of bad shots. Marvin was nonexistent offensively.
I don’t say any of that to put down those players. The point is that the Hawks as individuals really only played at about 80% today and they still won because they played fantastic team ball. Defensively the rotations and communication was outstanding. They rebounded well as a team and almost broke even on the glass. Offensively the ball movement was outstanding and the big men made an effort to set up inside instead of trying to get jumpers (not just Smoove, but also Al and the bench big men).
The good Hawks/bad Hawks schizophrenia act got old a long time ago, but damn, the good Hawks are fun to watch.

Props again to the people who wanted the Hawks to go big from the beginning of this series. Y’all were right and I was wrong.
“Basketball IQ” is an overused phrase around here, but to me, Jason Collins clearly has the highest basketball IQ on the team by a considerable margin. Whatever his faults may be, it always seems like him being in the starting lineup benefits the team as a whole.
Also, with all due respect to Kirk, if Teague doesn’t keep his starting job after Kirk gets healthy I might buy a courtside ticket just to punch LD in the face.

Guys the Hawks may look at in Free Agency if we don’t sign Jamal:
First, I would re-sign Collins and Wilkens
I would let Powell, and Etan go. Maybe Armstrong also.
I know we have Rolle – but I don’t know how he’ll turn out. So we probably need 2 C’s and a PF:
In no particular order
Kris Humphries – but probably too expensive
Dalembert – Probably too expensive
Alex Ajinca
Troy Murphy
Chris Wilcox
Chucky Hayes
Craig Smith
Magliore
Nazr Mohammed – if he hasn’t re-upped with OKC
Kwame Brown
Reggie Evans – maybe too expensive.
Wings:
Kirelenko
Grant Hill
Willie Green
Micheal Redd
Shane Battier – if he hasn’t signed with the Griz
Al Thornton
Tayshaun Prince
McGrady
PG’s:
Berea
Boykins? Maybe
I didn’t include some we probably can’t afford with the CBA, or that were possible head cases, like Big Baby.
I still think trading JC2 hurt – but we do have Hinrich for next season!

Smith said he’s not worried about those who boo him in his own hometown, who feel he’s never quite lived up to his enormous potential even though he’s still just 25 years old.
“There are people who don’t understand the game, who don’t know the game. That doesn’t faze me,” he said. “My teammates matter more than anybody else. They believe in me. They have confidence in my game. When I was in my rut, they told me to stay positive, to stay in the game, just do what I’d been doing all season long. I stayed with it and had the game I had tonight.”
If he continues playing the way he did tonight, I don’t give a sh-t whether he “gets it” or not.

Do the Refs rotate from game to game in the playoffs? I’m concerned that Salvatore will try to even out his bad call from tonight’s game. He missed a call so he should not try to hurt the Hawks in the next game.

By the way that guy Omer Asik is a good player. The Hawks picked up Zaza when he was an off-the-radar player like Asik is now, and although Zaza is no starter and didn’t live up to his contract the last couple of years he’s still a valuable bench player when he is on his game. Asik is like Zaza with shot blocking ability. I’d like to see the Hawks try to pick him up. If Thibodeau likes Marvin that much offer him Marvin for Asik.

You are giving him way too much credit. He missed a TON of calls in this game. This was a horribly officiated game from the start, and the Hawks were on the wrong side of the whistles in the first half. If anything that “inadvertent whistle” was a makeup call for the first half.

Loved the Hawks tonight. They would not be denied. Sorry, that the classless Bulls are crying about 1 call when we were jobbed the entire game. Teague lives in the lane and did not get to the foul line once. That’s just one example of how one-sided this game was called in the Bulls corner.
Still, at the end of the day we would not be denied we showed heart.

Josh, we understand the game. We see the potential and know you can play like you played tonight. If you play like that, we’ll cheer our hearts out for you. When you play the other way, we boo. It’s pretty simple. We love you when you’re playing to your capability. We don’t like guys who play lazy and stubborn.

Tonight pretty much proved what most here have been saying for quite some time.
After losing efforts, there’s no use pointing the finger at Marvin Williams. The dude gives us next to nothing pretty much every night. What we really need to be looking at is Smith and Horford. Both showed up tonight, both played with energy, and both dominated. That’s where this series will be won/loss.
If Smith can duplicate this ‘effort’, not necessarily the stat line, then we’ll be in good shape moving forward. Same with Horford. Dude doesn’t have to shoot 9-11 every night, but just solid efficient basketball. These guys can’t go M.I.A. on this team right now. Both need to show up and play with the intensity they showed tonight.

In the Hawks’ two wins in this series, they have on average matched the Bulls rebound for rebound. In the Hawks’ two losses, they have been outrebounded by an average of 16 rebounds.
Beating the Bulls just comes down to matching their energy and hustle, particularly on the glass and when it comes to getting loose balls.

Rose gets away with taking too many shots to get points just because the league has “legitimized” him as the next generation of star(s) Somewhere in Turkey, AI is kicking himself-he was everything Rose is… I was wondering if we kept Rose to such a bad percentage and stayed put with the rest of the guys-we can still beat the Bulls. But, the worst of officiating against us is yet to come because the league cannot afford to have us in the next round-expect Rose to be getting to the line like Wade.
Great D on Rose on the pick and rolls. On offense, I thought Teague has many opportunities to roll and take his guy to the rack.(Something LD might consider exploring next year since he all but guaranteed his return according to Hollinger)

@Najeh funny stuff. At end of day, we need a true post up 5. Move Al to 4 and Josh to 3. That is the lineup that gave the Hawks the most success. That makes the bench strong with Crawford, Kirk, Marvin and Zaza coming off bench. Keep Damien and maybe Collins and replace etan, Powell, and Armstrong. If they do that and pay attention on a consistent basis, we can do something during Joe’s and Josh’s contracts

In terms of lineup and minutes played-PERFECT especially JC 28 minutes.
We won this game on DEFENSE, the way this team is built. We just don’t talk about D like BOS and CHI because we don’t have a strong personality coach.
Phillips was pro-Atl even when Rose was doing his thing.
We started well-key point in all our W’s and rebounded/ got Noah in foul trouble.
Joe looked like he didn’t break a sweat in getting his 24 points which were just as easy as Horford’s in the paint buckets. He put on a clinic on Joe-effeciency.

Thanks to all the press, MC, Barkley, Sir Charles and Mark Bradley for calling Josh Smith out and signaling the return of J Smash – hope he is here to stay…Coach Thibs psyche games did not work “Marvin Williams, under rated player…” He knew LD keeping him in the starting lineup benefits the Bulls in many areas.

“why can’t Josh play like this, after jacking a few in the first qtr from 20 ft and missing all but one, all the time. Josh is not dumb. You only have to listen to him answer questions in an interview to know he has “some” smarts. So why. His 3 qtrs of excellent and effort driven play after his totally inept play last Friday is so maddening. Josh may play like last Friday or yesterday on Tuesday, who knows. I hope (crazy as it sounds) that a lifelong ATL resident, like Josh, will put his pride about how he thinks he can shoot jumpers like JJ or JC aside and play all out, IN THE PAINT, for all us long suffering Hawk fans. We are as close as Dominique and that bunch was 25 yrs ago. So you sucked me in one more time Josh (SUCKER may be more correct). If you will play smart, we have a chance. JJ and JC will either be hot or they won’t, Al seems to have found his heart, LD seems to have found his brain and is playing JC (a real 5, imagine that), YOU JOSH, YOU CAN CHOOSE TO PLAY SMART. some of what we arent geting done is because the bulls play the game well. if you feel pressure then your performance drops.
we really do get out physicaled and out manuevered at the same time by the bulls. it should be one or the other but for this series it is both. we got to get one more reliable big in the post season that can do more than collins.
smith seemed to have a bit more composure under the basket with the ball last night. he used feints and pauses to his advantage to help his offensive game last night rather than just go strong to the basket. it is so funny to hear josh still have trouble admitting to his weaknesses of playing the j smoove crap doesnt he? feeble name for a sf/pf anyway. just be j smash and have that attitude and you are an all star. you are not going to ever be a finesse player ever and by the size of your beautiful mom you are going to get heftier as you age, not thinner and sleeker. bro, it aint in your genes.
i personally didnt think collins looked as bad as MC might have inferred as he got a few points as well as bring some darkness to the paint. man the guy ony avg about 1 rpg per 36 minutes anyway, so why begin to trash him about that now. boozer and gibson did hurt us early but i thought it wasnt necessarily on collins. he is what he is, a huge immovable force that sometimes can really anticipate well and be there before they get there.

First of all, great team win.
But this game shows why fans get so frustrated with Josh. He has All-Star talent, but he does not stay focused consistently enough. So he is up and down, and the Hawks are up and down. But except for a few bad shots early, he was awesome, especially down the stretch.
it was not a bad pick,
Are you still wondering why the Hawks start Josh instead of Marvin? Marvin played really good defense, but on offense, he sucked. Again. And dude can’t even rebound.

The Hawks were great last night. The fans were great, too. There did not seem to be as many Chicago fans as Friday night.
Josh was good. When he plays like that, he is an All Star. I can’t help to wonder, however, what was the motivation? Did he just want to stick it to the people that have been ripping him (me, for instance)? If that’s the case, we will see him revert back to being “Bad Josh” tomorrow night.
Jeff Teague is becoming a superstar. Not just holding his own, he’s a star. I thought his D on Korver was outstanding. There was only one time he went over a screen and lost Korver (Korver missed the shot). Teague was playing b@lls out on both ends of the floor. I’m becoming a huge fan of his. Again, props to all of you that have been calling for him to play all year. I completely missed the boat on that.
Al’s gotta start shooting again. If he’s going to play scared and pass up open looks, it will hurt the Hawks. He’s just in a slump. It’s not a case of him not being able to make jumpers. It’s just a slump. He has to play his way out of it, not just back off.
Tomorrow will be interesting. Would be willing to argue that a Hawks win tomorrow night might be the biggest win since the organization moved to Atlanta.

@Section303-
Did not seem to be as many Bulls fans? They were all in Section 120. Hostile territory, until the 4th quarter when they all beat a hasty retreat the last 3 minutes and we had an unobstructed view of the finish.
It was worth every penny to sit so close and it confirmed my observations of late about the offense passing on open shots (not that I didn’t believe you guys). I thought (hoped) maybe it was because I had to watch all the games on LP all season and the camera angles were bad. But it was glaring how open Al was at times- to the point that fans groaned when he passed a couple of wide open looks. And the one play when offense finally worked it inside with about 5 on the shot clock and (I can’t remember who) it was passed back out beyond the arc resulting in a shot clock violation? I hope LD plays that film over and over and over …just post up and get a freakin foul! Sometimes you have to take your chances with a contested shot.
But I digress…it was a fabulous win and so unbelievably great to be there in person for it. I’m just picking up on Al and Jamal’s sentiments about the need to play flawlessly from here on out if they want to make it to the ECF. GO HAWKS!

When you get the lead keep it! You had plenty of chances to pull away from Chicago but kept letting them get back in the game. You had leads up to 7-8 pts but let them storm back in it. The biggest differences in this game was Rebounding by far and not letting them get 2nd and 3rd shots.
The Pick-Roll…….. The Hawks squeezed Rose on both sides of the Pick Player not letting him get around either side for a layup or jump shot. He turned the ball over or dumped the ball. That was great scheme by the hawks. He had 6 easy lay ups which was 12 pts of his 32 pts.
Everytime he spread our defense for lay ups i knew he was gonna take the outside for a layup instead of inside, chicago played this many a times and they’ll continue this in chicago so be ready. He’s not ever gonna go inside , its outside thje defender.
Plz continue to move the ball around and head toward the basket when JJ is double teamed, this agitates the bulls and their players. Al Horford you are better than Noah and i dont know if you felt sick or what was wrong because i felt like you were just not into the game.
If you take away the Offensive rebounds and contest every shot by Rose and rotate because he’s looking for someone going toward the basket you will win.
If you take the ball toward the basket like Teague was doing and then Josh Smith and put Boozer and/or Noah in foul trouble you’ll win. Boozer avg 17 pts a game and without him then its harder to rebound and defend. This was a TEAM EFFORT where everyonme had pts and minutes and this can continue because you can beat Chicago on their home turf.
Game#5 the Bulls will be really pumped up and will be looking to take game 5 and if yoiu can jump on them early and be ahead 8-10 pts in the 1st quarter there will be a huge letdown on the bulls bench.
Send Boozer and Noah to the bench with lots of foul problems and this should deflate the bulls. Give Rose nothing and make his team beat you and not him.
If i was A HAWK PLAYER i would be so more focused than ever because it now becomes a 3 game series and if you win game 5 wow and bringing it here to finish them off….WOW.
Though they are all important but game 5 is the pivotal game and the bulls know that. Do something that no one expected you to do and that is beat the Bulls just like Dallas beat the mighty Lakers, just like the Grizzlies beat San Antonio…….its possible but you have got to believe in yourself and your team mates.
Its there for you but you have got to take it and one never knows if you ever get this opportunity again so make the most of it.

It is a wonder what a penetrating point guard, a power forward playing close to the basket, and a seven footer in the middle can do for a pro basketball team. Everyone keep it down, we don’t want the rest of the league to figure out our little secret.

Doc, for all your dogging Collins, he got a key charge…in the game…why he wasn’t at his best…he always finds a way to make a contribution…when he is on the floor…we just need him to dish out some punishment…and bang some guys around…it want show up in stats…but it will help the team.
MC, LD is making adjustments… he has definitely step it up his game…in the playoff…whether this will translate in regulars seasons…who knows…BUT it was great to see these guys show some resolve.
What was great…was that they did it in the national spotlight…at Phillips…and especially on TNT…I have to COMMEND LD and his staff for that.
Young Teague is making a name for himself…I’m happy for the young man.
Josh just has to understand that…TOO MUCH WHO IS GIVEN…MUCH IS REQUIRED…it aint all the media and fans piling on…he has to share some blame too…like he did…and come back with another Phenomenal performance…to help this team go up 3-2 in the series.
Josh don’t rest on laurels from game four…STAY PISSED OFF.

Thank You for explaining FTPB to me. Great observations from you as always. I particularly loved that Teague penetration for a lay up when he landed on his belly at the feet of camera row.
There was no foul called, but re reminded me on Rondo in last years play offs when Rondo landed on his belly and jumped up to get back on defense. Teague has a lot of Rondo in his game. He is actually a better scorer/shooter than Rondo.
Too bad Rondo tore his elbow. He is done for the series and Miami will probably advance hopefully to play the Hawks in the ECF.
Hawks are in the cat bird seat now and Drew’s game plan is perfect to close these Bulls out. Just stick to it!
_______________
Keys To The Bentley!
Give Teague the KEYS to the car! Drew has to figure out how to use his two PG’s now. Fellas! We finally got the POINT. Collins is great for this team at Center. Playing the roles is our best asset now. Team familiarity is finally gonna’ pay off. We still need to shake that talent tree and find more pieces to round out this core. Great team effort last night.

Just so proud of my Hawks, I’m SPEECHLESS!! Teague is EXACTLY what we needed for this series. Maybe also with Orlando. That series probably could have ended sooner for us had Teague started that series too..maybe finish 4-1. Teague is DEFINITELY the missing link for this team. Werther he scores another basket or not, as long as he continues to play the energy DEFensive style basketball (esp him guarding Korver..I LOVE HIM ON KORVER) he has played thus far, THAT WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE HAWKS

“…I think we played like a desperate team,” L.D. said….”
Not good. Leads to desperation passes and desperation shots; as opposed to controlled, calculated, team ball. Maybe he meant it some other way.
“…When people don’t understand the game and don’t know the game it really doesn’t faze me,” Josh said…”
Well, Smoove, the media and the fans might know the game a little better than you think. After all, you’re the
one who’s inconsistent; throwing up “desperation” outside bricks. But, yes, when you play like you’re supposed to play (inside the paint), you can be great. And, yes, us ignorant fans also know you can’t be “great” every game. But, if you were at least consistent we wouldn’t criticize. Just go up to Chi Town and play your game. If you and the team do that, you have a chance.

Wonder if the ref will comment on all the bad calls that went Chicago’s way:
J Smith Tip in / Half dunk noah was grabbing his arm
The T on ZaZa was bad, Offensive player was still playing after the wistle and going for a dunk, ZaZa fouled him yes but why a Tech?
Joe Johnson slaps ball off his own leg, they call kick and give Bulls ball and new 24 seconds.
All the no calls on Teague drives
All the pushing while ATL going for rebounds.
Oh, Chicago had a few not go their way also
Way is he commenting on that one bad call.

Josh Smith = Andruw Jones
Confidence can actually be a bad thing for him. Think of Andruw when the coaches got him to shorten his swing. Next thing you know he’s batting close to .300, then the success starts to go to his head and he thinks it’s okay to start swinging from his heels again. JS is the same way – after a good game he thinks he’s money from 20 feet. Hopefully LD makes him repeatedly watch all those bricks from last night and breaks the cycle.

I spent most of the regular season getting jumped on by some of our fans for criticing LDrew for playing MBibby so many mins, and making one lame excuse after another to justify his stupid bias against playing JTeague. Is there anyone who feels this couldn’t have ended up being another 4gm sweep if KHinrich hadn’t been injured and Teague forced into the starting PG role?
Can you also imagine how much better JTeague, and the Hawks in general, would be if LDrew had spent more time making a way to give him more consistent mins and opportunities during the regular season, rather than making excuses about his alledged lack of confidence, aggressiveness, maturity etc.?
I remember having several arguments/discussions with certain BIBBY LOVERS about the merits of benching Bibby, and playing, and even starting, Teague. They were making about as many lame excuses are LDrew was making to protect Bibby. Remember the excuses about Bibby being the NBA’s best PG at setting screens, describing his matador DEF as funneling, the idea that the team plays far better with him on the floor, or the high 3pt shooting percentage, which led to no more than 9PPG?
The issue at this point isn’t about the confidence JTeague is gaining, because I don’t think his confidence in himself has ever wavered. It’s really about the confidence his teammates and HC are gaining in him. Now, everyone is now seeing what I’ve seen in him all along, therefore, I REST MY CASE.

Ive only been saying the last couple of years. Tyson Chandler, Sam Dalembert, Brendan Haywood, and even Marcus Camby when he left Denver. I think his career is over now but we passed on all 4 of these centers who were traded for a bag of basketballs. I know some think Collins is our center no if he was you could leave him in there for 35 plus minutes. He simply a 7 ft foul machine this guys athletic ability is next to zero. He is the flip side to Josh.

Al dominated Noah down low late in the game, scoring 8 points during the Hawks 20-8 run in the final six minutes. The Hawks also got a big performance fro Joe Smith, who kept pace with Derrick Rose early in the fourth and kept the game close. Jamal’s big shot after Deng’s bucket iced the game nicely, as this game ended drama-free. Check it out:

Hawks in 7, here’s why?
1. LD will devise a D to neutralize Rose. I suggest a zone blitz.
2. Hawks mentally/physically/spiritually tougher after Magic series.
3. Individual matchups are pretty even overall.
4. JJ’s playing better, his domination of Korver/Brewer is key.
5. Teague contributes after watching Rocky I, II, III, IV.
6. Damian ain’t scared to throw ‘dem bows.
7. Smoove/Deng is a good matchup, younger legs prevail in 7.
8. Horford has Noah’s number.
9. Big lineup will neutralize Noah, Thomas, Boozer.
10. Watson scares me.

Win or lose, we’ve learned a lot from this post season!!!
1.LD made adjustments, unlike woodson in the playoffs, AND the players listened to him, most of the time….they had stopped listening to Woodson last year!
1. We’ve found our point guard…I just don’t understand what took LD so long to find it out
3. We need to keep Jamal, AND we should let Marvin go…I’ve been a big fan of his but he’s too inconsistent and has no energy!.
4. Zaza is definitely a keeper….you need a fighter in the post season!!!
5. During the regular season next year, LD needs to sit Joefor some extended periods as soon as he starts the dribble, dribble, dribble, ISO,ISO,ISO….maybe then he’ll learn to do what he does sporadically now….pass as soon as the double comes!!!!

The 2 people who are primarily responsible for the Hawks being 2-2 in the 2nd rd against the NBA’s best team duing the regular season are LDrew and JTeague. In the 1st rd against Orlando, LDrew coached rings around Van Gundy, and in the 2nd rd, Teague has given us stability and a new dimension.
In 6 yrs, Woodson’s inflexible, hardnosed approach did nothing to make JSmith or MWilliams better and more mature players, or JJ a better team player. His approach did absolutely nothing to develop or get any meaningful production from players like SStaudemire, ALaw or JTeague.
While some of you might not accept LDrew’s more passive approach to dealing with JJ and Josh, he definitely seems to be getting through to both players. It’s too bad he hasn’t gotten through to Marvin, who could definitely win this series for us with a solid overall gm.
This is LDrews 1st yr as a HC, so he had some growing pains, as can be expected with this team. However, with a new and much improved JTeague on board, and hopefully a more mature and controlled JSmith, he can turn this team into a serious title contender. There will certainly be more maturity and a lot more respect to go around for both LDrew and PG JTeague.

Didn’t think so to begin with, but the fact is that Hinrich’s injury has been a boon to the Hawks.
Teague has emerged, and done so in fine fashion. You can “sample size” all you want, but playing well in the 2nd round of the playoffs in EACH GAME of the series is something a lot of veterans can’t lay claim to.
Teague is here. When’s the last time we had a point guard that can not only outrun everybody but the League’s MVP, but will also dunk the ball every chance he gets?
Oh, and how about that 3-to-1 turnover ratio…in the playoffs…against the League MVP?
Yeah. He’s a baller. No question. Teague haters are probably STILL in the closet right about now. Afraid to come out and get dunked on.

BIG RAY-I won’t back down from my STUBBORN STUPIDITY comment when it comes to LDrew’s handling, or should I say mishandling, of JTeague and his development during the regular season. And don’t think LDrews STUBBORN STUPIDITY(biased)approach would have changed for Teague if KHinrich hadn’t suffered his injury.
And yes, I’ll break my arm off patting myself on the back for being right about believing Teague was capable of doing in the regular season what he’s doing now. Tell me, can you, or any of his regular season apologist or distractors, point to anything, and I mean anything, that leads you to believe he couldn’t have done during the regular season what he’s doing now? All he need was for LDrew to give him the same mins, opportunity and support he’s now receiving?
I remember you calling me stubborn, on more than one occassion, for sticking to my opinion or belief, refusing to give in to popular opinion about Teague and Bibby. I think I’ve earned the right to gloat after being proven right about Teague. Maybe you should be making an issue of the many bandwagon jumpers who are now singing Teague’s praises.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WOODY AND LD: FROM MARK BRADLEY’S BLOG
*Since now. Note the difference between Mike Woodson, the former coach, and Larry Drew, the former Woodson assistant now in charge. Woodson sought to guard Dwight Howard the same way four consecutive games in Round 2 last season, the result being four record blowouts. After the Hawks lost meekly in Game 3 here Friday, Drew redrew his starting lineup to include Jason Collins, who brings effort if nothing else, and it yielded the needed flying start.*
*Johnson: “Coach Woodson tried, and he’d make changes here and there. With LD it’s not just one adjustment — it’s four or five. We’ve just bought into it.”*

ANT BANKS-here’s why I said MWoodson and LDrew had a personal bias against Teague, and any young guard for that matter. Both HC’s pretended to be DEF minded, yet they both insisted on relying exclusively on the teams 2 worst DEF players, MBibby and JCrawford, to play PG. If nothing else, Teague proved he was a far better DEF player than both, yet that aspect of his gm was totally ignored.
Two yrs of Bibby’s lack of offensive and defensive production would have prompted any openminded HC to bench him, or at least reduce his mins. The question remaining is whether LDrew has finally overcome his bias against young JTeague. Is he still giving lip service, and will he look for any excuse to restore KHinrich to his starting position?

I really question the way OKC’s offense has functioned tonight, at least in late game/late clock possessions.
These guys take wayyy too long getting into their sets. If you’re gonna set up Durant, give him more than 2-3 seconds to get to his spot and get a good shot off. I’ve seen this more than a couple of instances so far tonight.
