Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 100, Bulls 88
1:17 am May 9, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Save for the nitpicks of a few blown transition chances, a handful of fumble-fingered turnovers and some missed Js from Smoove (before he started beasting) and some shots Al passed up (before he started dunking), what was there not to like about the Hawks tonight?
- They shared the ball. They defended. They rebounded. They competed. They didn’t allow D-Rose easy passage to the basket. They finished furiously as their fans roared and the Bulls faltered.
- “I think we played like a desperate team,” L.D. said.
- It was a fine team effort with lots of standout individual performances.
- J.J. decisively danced through Chicago’s defense and may not have made a bad decision all night. Al finally got physical with Noah. Teague looked like a seasoned pro. Jamal didn’t force it against double teams and made just enough key baskets to keep the Bulls honest.
- And in the second half Smoove showed how he can control a game by defending, rebounding, running and attacking the basket.
- Josh had steamed for two days about the criticism for his Game 3 performance. Maybe a ticked off Smoove is the best thing for the Hawks.
- “He has taken the criticism well,” Al said. “I think he has kind of taken it all in. It’s been the media but it’s [also] been the coaches, it’s been us telling him. He kind of put it together and finally we saw what he is capable of doing. We need him to keep that intensity.”
- The boos for Smoove turned into cheers by the end.
- “When people don’t understand the game and don’t know the game it really doesn’t faze me,” Josh said. “When people are here night in and night our cheering for the Atlanta Hawks, minus the postseason, for the playoffs, that’s what matters to me. And my teammates matter extremely more than anybody else. They believe in me and have confidence in my game. They told me to stay with it.”
- It was Smoove, Teague and Al on the attack in the fourth quarter as the Bulls were fixated on J.J. and Jamal. L.D. will have plenty of video to show the Hawks how they can get high-percentage shots from ball movement, quick decisions by the guards and the bigs cutting to the basket.
- “Something has to be open,” Jamal said. “You get two guys on you something has to be open. I thought Joe and myself did a good job with that tonight.”
- D-Rose did what he could. He scored seven straight points to keep Chicago in it early in the fourth. He got to the basket against good challenges for scores that tied it at 82-82 and 84-84.
- But after Teague’s tough layup, Josh forced Rose to miss on a drive. Josh passed ahead to Teague, who dropped it off for Al’s layup on the break.
- “That was big just staying with it and guys not getting discouraged with Derrick hitting his shots and sticking with our game plan,” Al said. “I think the energy was there. I don’t think we had that so much [in Game 3].”
- “We knew that Rose would try to take it over at that point, which he’s so good at,”L.D. said. “We had to make a conscious effort of everybody zeroing in on him. And I tell you, there were times when I thought we had him corralled but he was able to get in there.”
- The Hawks erupted for 33 points in the final period. “I didn’t like our defense in the fourth quarter,” Tom Thiibodeau said. “I thought we drove the ball hard but didn’t get a call, but that’s the way it goes.”
- The Hawks dogged Rose with double teams. It looked to me like the Bulls actually had good spacing and ball movement but Atlanta’s rotations were sharp and persistent all night so Rose’s supporting cast was held down.
- Korver missed a couple open looks but never really could shake free despite running around through all those screens. Noah had 11 rebounds but didn’t get the putbacks. Deng was 1 of 4 after halftime.
- Rose scored 13 of Chicago’s 19 points in the fourth quarter while taking 12 of their 17 shots.
- “It was a tough game tonight but we’ll make no excuses,” Rose said. “If they double team me in the next game, we’ll just have to do a better job of executing. I had some turnovers in the fourth quarter that hurt is and we didn’t play as well down the stretch.”
- The “big” lineup paid dividends but not the one with Twin. He lasted just 12 minutes, didn’t get a rebound and had problems chasing Boozer in the crossmatch but Zaza had nine rebounds in 25 minutes.
- “Give them credit,” Boozer said. “Their bigs were very active.”
- Marvin was just 0 for 5 but he was solid defensively early. He had a couple blocked shots at the rim, one of them against Rose.
- Teague is more impressive with each game. Tonight he had a good feel for when to attack and when to pull the ball out. “He played like a professional,” Jamal said. “A couple times he controlled the tempo in big moments. It helped us. He runs the show. He’s always keeping pressure on the defense. We need that.”
- Joe didn’t play a big role in the furious finish (except of course for drawing attention that helped his teammates) but he was superb through three quarters: 22 points, 8 of 11 field goals, four assists, one turnover. When he dribbled it was purposeful. He got away from pressure to the middle of the floor where the traps weren’t as effective.
- The Hawks started fast, a development that surprised Damien: “I ain’t gonna lie, I was kind of nervous at shootaround today because the mood was very somber. There wasn’t a whole lot of energy. It kind of felt like we were down 3-0 and about to play the Michael Jordan Bulls. But we responded well.”
- Ref Bennett Salvatore said he didn’t mean to blow his whistle with 2:27 to go on a play where Jamal made contact with Rose. “I didn’t think it was a foul,” Salvatore told a pool reporter. “Having watched the replay after the game, it was a foul and I should have called it. I made a mistake.”
- Smoove won the jump ball and on the ensuing possession passed to Al for a dunk that made it 92-84.
- “At that time of the game, I’ve never seen an inadvertent whistle,” Thibodeau said. “But Bennett is a good official who said he missed the call. He’s still a good official. He’s human and we all make mistakes.”

Teague is the difference. When he is in we play a winning type of basketball. We run. Josh can run, Al can run, JJ can run.
What are the odds that if Hinrich recovers in time for the next round, LD will sit Teague?

When you get the lead keep it! You had plenty of chances to pull away from Chicago but kept letting them get back in the game. You had leads up to 7-8 pts but let them storm back in it. The biggest differences in this game was Rebounding by far and not letting them get 2nd and 3rd shots.
The Pick-Roll…….. The Hawks squeezed Rose on both sides of the Pick Player not letting him get around either side for a layup or jump shot. He turned the ball over or dumped the ball. That was great scheme by the hawks. He had 6 easy lay ups which was 12 pts of his 32 pts.
Everytime he spread our defense for lay ups i knew he was gonna take the outside for a layup instead of inside, chicago played this many a times and they’ll continue this in chicago so be ready. He’s not ever gonna go inside , its outside thje defender.
Plz continue to move the ball around and head toward the basket when JJ is double teamed, this agitates the bulls and their players. Al Horford you are better than Noah and i dont know if you felt sick or what was wrong because i felt like you were just not into the game.
If you take away the Offensive rebounds and contest every shot by Rose and rotate because he’s looking for someone going toward the basket you will win.
If you take the ball toward the basket like Teague was doing and then Josh Smith and put Boozer and/or Noah in foul trouble you’ll win. Boozer avg 17 pts a game and without him then its harder to rebound and defend. This was a TEAM EFFORT where everyonme had pts and minutes and this can continue because you can beat Chicago on their home turf.
Game#5 the Bulls will be really pumped up and will be looking to take game 5 and if yoiu can jump on them early and be ahead 8-10 pts in the 1st quarter there will be a huge letdown on the bulls bench.
Send Boozer and Noah to the bench with lots of foul problems and this should deflate the bulls. Give Rose nothing and make his team beat you and not him.
If i was A HAWK PLAYER i would be so more focused than ever because it now becomes a 3 game series and if you win game 5 wow and bringing it here to finish them off….WOW.
Though they are all important but game 5 is the pivotal game and the bulls know that. Do something that no one expected you to do and that is beat the Bulls just like Dallas beat the mighty Lakers, just like the Grizzlies beat San Antonio…….its possible but you have got to believe in yourself and your team mates.
Its there for you but you have got to take it and one never knows if you ever get this opportunity again so make the most of it.

It is a wonder what a penetrating point guard, a power forward playing close to the basket, and a seven footer in the middle can do for a pro basketball team. Everyone keep it down, we don’t want the rest of the league to figure out our little secret.

Doc, for all your dogging Collins, he got a key charge…in the game…why he wasn’t at his best…he always finds a way to make a contribution…when he is on the floor…we just need him to dish out some punishment…and bang some guys around…it want show up in stats…but it will help the team.
MC, LD is making adjustments… he has definitely step it up his game…in the playoff…whether this will translate in regulars seasons…who knows…BUT it was great to see these guys show some resolve.
What was great…was that they did it in the national spotlight…at Phillips…and especially on TNT…I have to COMMEND LD and his staff for that.
Young Teague is making a name for himself…I’m happy for the young man.
Josh just has to understand that…TOO MUCH WHO IS GIVEN…MUCH IS REQUIRED…it aint all the media and fans piling on…he has to share some blame too…like he did…and come back with another Phenomenal performance…to help this team go up 3-2 in the series.
Josh don’t rest on laurels from game four…STAY PISSED OFF.

*Start the big lineup in game 5
*REBOUNDING
*CONTEST D.Rose at the rim – no more uncontested floaters
*NO UNCONTESTED BOOZER shots
*SMOOVE, keep attacking – no more jumpshots. IDK why you said you’ve been in a rut. If you continue taking outside shots, you WILL ALWAYS be in a rut

i sure wish the HAWKS were not so disfunctional on defense, didn’t suffer from a lapse in judgement on defense at times, we’re not SO CHILDISH as to inflict cheap fouls and after getting THROWN OUT acting HIGH SCHOOLISH by taking their jersey off in front of 18000+ fans as they get SWEPT in the second round of the playoffs.
NO, as i look closer those are the GREAT LA LAKERS purple and gold jerseys coached by the GREAT COACH phil jackson.

LD coached a good game yesterday but completely destroyed game 3 for us. We came out unprepared and DID NOT MAKE ONE adjustment to help on the glass. If he had gone with the Twin lineup in game 3, we’d be up 3-1 now
DAMNIT NOW WE HAVE TO WIN 1 IN CHICAGO

Thank You for explaining FTPB to me. Great observations from you as always. I particularly loved that Teague penetration for a lay up when he landed on his belly at the feet of camera row.
There was no foul called, but re reminded me on Rondo in last years play offs when Rondo landed on his belly and jumped up to get back on defense. Teague has a lot of Rondo in his game. He is actually a better scorer/shooter than Rondo.
Too bad Rondo tore his elbow. He is done for the series and Miami will probably advance hopefully to play the Hawks in the ECF.
Hawks are in the cat bird seat now and Drew’s game plan is perfect to close these Bulls out. Just stick to it!
_______________
Keys To The Bentley!
Give Teague the KEYS to the car! Drew has to figure out how to use his two PG’s now. Fellas! We finally got the POINT. Collins is great for this team at Center. Playing the roles is our best asset now. Team familiarity is finally gonna’ pay off. We still need to shake that talent tree and find more pieces to round out this core. Great team effort last night.

Just so proud of my Hawks, I’m SPEECHLESS!! Teague is EXACTLY what we needed for this series. Maybe also with Orlando. That series probably could have ended sooner for us had Teague started that series too..maybe finish 4-1. Teague is DEFINITELY the missing link for this team. Werther he scores another basket or not, as long as he continues to play the energy DEFensive style basketball (esp him guarding Korver..I LOVE HIM ON KORVER) he has played thus far, THAT WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE HAWKS

“…I think we played like a desperate team,” L.D. said….”
Not good. Leads to desperation passes and desperation shots; as opposed to controlled, calculated, team ball. Maybe he meant it some other way.
“…When people don’t understand the game and don’t know the game it really doesn’t faze me,” Josh said…”
Well, Smoove, the media and the fans might know the game a little better than you think. After all, you’re the
one who’s inconsistent; throwing up “desperation” outside bricks. But, yes, when you play like you’re supposed to play (inside the paint), you can be great. And, yes, us ignorant fans also know you can’t be “great” every game. But, if you were at least consistent we wouldn’t criticize. Just go up to Chi Town and play your game. If you and the team do that, you have a chance.
Go Hawks!!

Wonder if the ref will comment on all the bad calls that went Chicago’s way:
J Smith Tip in / Half dunk noah was grabbing his arm
The T on ZaZa was bad, Offensive player was still playing after the wistle and going for a dunk, ZaZa fouled him yes but why a Tech?
Joe Johnson slaps ball off his own leg, they call kick and give Bulls ball and new 24 seconds.
All the no calls on Teague drives
All the pushing while ATL going for rebounds.
Oh, Chicago had a few not go their way also
Way is he commenting on that one bad call.

Josh Smith = Andruw Jones
Confidence can actually be a bad thing for him. Think of Andruw when the coaches got him to shorten his swing. Next thing you know he’s batting close to .300, then the success starts to go to his head and he thinks it’s okay to start swinging from his heels again. JS is the same way – after a good game he thinks he’s money from 20 feet. Hopefully LD makes him repeatedly watch all those bricks from last night and breaks the cycle.

GO HAWKS! Well said by all.
Biggest concern: Who shows up? Sharing the ball Hawks with the “good” JS…..or….you know who.
2nd biggest concern: HORRIBLE REFS. They don’t even make an attempt to call it the same on both ends. This win was especially amazing given that the Hawks had to play against the Bull and the refs.
ps: The “controversial call did NOT look like a foul to me. ROSE LANDED WITHOUT BEING HIT! He was bumped just AFTER he landed.

There is no way the bigs of Chicago can guard either Smoove or Horford….
I hope Al Horford can understand that and stop being a jumpshooter on every posession and instead use his lenght and quickness in the paint like he did last night. Also hope that Smoove can stay playing smart and do the same.

I spent most of the regular season getting jumped on by some of our fans for criticing LDrew for playing MBibby so many mins, and making one lame excuse after another to justify his stupid bias against playing JTeague. Is there anyone who feels this couldn’t have ended up being another 4gm sweep if KHinrich hadn’t been injured and Teague forced into the starting PG role?
Can you also imagine how much better JTeague, and the Hawks in general, would be if LDrew had spent more time making a way to give him more consistent mins and opportunities during the regular season, rather than making excuses about his alledged lack of confidence, aggressiveness, maturity etc.?
I remember having several arguments/discussions with certain BIBBY LOVERS about the merits of benching Bibby, and playing, and even starting, Teague. They were making about as many lame excuses are LDrew was making to protect Bibby. Remember the excuses about Bibby being the NBA’s best PG at setting screens, describing his matador DEF as funneling, the idea that the team plays far better with him on the floor, or the high 3pt shooting percentage, which led to no more than 9PPG?
The issue at this point isn’t about the confidence JTeague is gaining, because I don’t think his confidence in himself has ever wavered. It’s really about the confidence his teammates and HC are gaining in him. Now, everyone is now seeing what I’ve seen in him all along, therefore, I REST MY CASE.

Ive only been saying the last couple of years. Tyson Chandler, Sam Dalembert, Brendan Haywood, and even Marcus Camby when he left Denver. I think his career is over now but we passed on all 4 of these centers who were traded for a bag of basketballs. I know some think Collins is our center no if he was you could leave him in there for 35 plus minutes. He simply a 7 ft foul machine this guys athletic ability is next to zero. He is the flip side to Josh.

Al dominated Noah down low late in the game, scoring 8 points during the Hawks 20-8 run in the final six minutes. The Hawks also got a big performance fro Joe Smith, who kept pace with Derrick Rose early in the fourth and kept the game close. Jamal’s big shot after Deng’s bucket iced the game nicely, as this game ended drama-free. Check it out:

Hawks in 7, here’s why?
1. LD will devise a D to neutralize Rose. I suggest a zone blitz.
2. Hawks mentally/physically/spiritually tougher after Magic series.
3. Individual matchups are pretty even overall.
4. JJ’s playing better, his domination of Korver/Brewer is key.
5. Teague contributes after watching Rocky I, II, III, IV.
6. Damian ain’t scared to throw ‘dem bows.
7. Smoove/Deng is a good matchup, younger legs prevail in 7.
8. Horford has Noah’s number.
9. Big lineup will neutralize Noah, Thomas, Boozer.
10. Watson scares me.

Win or lose, we’ve learned a lot from this post season!!!
1.LD made adjustments, unlike woodson in the playoffs, AND the players listened to him, most of the time….they had stopped listening to Woodson last year!
1. We’ve found our point guard…I just don’t understand what took LD so long to find it out
3. We need to keep Jamal, AND we should let Marvin go…I’ve been a big fan of his but he’s too inconsistent and has no energy!.
4. Zaza is definitely a keeper….you need a fighter in the post season!!!
5. During the regular season next year, LD needs to sit Joefor some extended periods as soon as he starts the dribble, dribble, dribble, ISO,ISO,ISO….maybe then he’ll learn to do what he does sporadically now….pass as soon as the double comes!!!!

The 2 people who are primarily responsible for the Hawks being 2-2 in the 2nd rd against the NBA’s best team duing the regular season are LDrew and JTeague. In the 1st rd against Orlando, LDrew coached rings around Van Gundy, and in the 2nd rd, Teague has given us stability and a new dimension.
In 6 yrs, Woodson’s inflexible, hardnosed approach did nothing to make JSmith or MWilliams better and more mature players, or JJ a better team player. His approach did absolutely nothing to develop or get any meaningful production from players like SStaudemire, ALaw or JTeague.
While some of you might not accept LDrew’s more passive approach to dealing with JJ and Josh, he definitely seems to be getting through to both players. It’s too bad he hasn’t gotten through to Marvin, who could definitely win this series for us with a solid overall gm.
This is LDrews 1st yr as a HC, so he had some growing pains, as can be expected with this team. However, with a new and much improved JTeague on board, and hopefully a more mature and controlled JSmith, he can turn this team into a serious title contender. There will certainly be more maturity and a lot more respect to go around for both LDrew and PG JTeague.

Didn’t think so to begin with, but the fact is that Hinrich’s injury has been a boon to the Hawks.
Teague has emerged, and done so in fine fashion. You can “sample size” all you want, but playing well in the 2nd round of the playoffs in EACH GAME of the series is something a lot of veterans can’t lay claim to.
Teague is here. When’s the last time we had a point guard that can not only outrun everybody but the League’s MVP, but will also dunk the ball every chance he gets?
Oh, and how about that 3-to-1 turnover ratio…in the playoffs…against the League MVP?
Yeah. He’s a baller. No question. Teague haters are probably STILL in the closet right about now. Afraid to come out and get dunked on.
