After Game 3 J.J., frustrated with the offense grinding to a halt against Chicago’s aggressive D, said he would “force the issue” Sunday. Basically Joe doesn’t think L.D.’s share-the-ball philosophy is the right way to do it even considering all the double teams faced by he and Jamal.
According to Synergy Sports Technology, Joe has used 26 isolation possessions against the Bulls out of 59 total isos for the Hawks. He’s scored 22 points on those 26 possessions.
Joe’s efficiency on those plays has declined with each game in the series.
In Game 1, Joe used 12 iso possessions and scored 14 points with 5 of 8 shooting, four free throws and two turnovers. In Game 2, Joe used six iso possessions and scored four points with 2 of 5 shooting and a turnover. In Game 3, Joe used eight iso possessions and scored four points with 2 of 8 shooting.
Joe was already gone when media were allowed access to the locker room today but L.D. addressed Joe’s frustrations:
“They are playing him physical. If he’s not being double teamed, they have climbed up in him. He is just going to have to combat that. There are a lot of key players on teams that other players play physical against and they just combat it. There are a lot of key players that get double teamed and they play out of double teams. A lot of playing out of double teams is not trying to beat double teams but making plays and you have to show a willingness to give the ball up and trust your teammates. If you continue to try to beat the double team by yourself you are playing into the opposition’s hands. We did a good job with that against Orlando. Orlando ran a very similar [scheme], the game plan was to take it out of his hands, double-team him. We made the right plays out of it. When you are playing against a team that is going to roughhouse you and play you physical, you have to combat that. A lot of these great players around the league, they face it every single night. You have got to look at how they play you, watch film, combat it. Don’t put yourself in situations where they can constantly be up on you. Draw fouls. That’s one of the things we need to do more of vs. that type of pressure, when they are playing like that.”
Could J.J. help himself by making quicker decisions against pressure?
“Without a doubt. When you know teams are playing you the way they are playing Joe, you have got to do things faster. That was something we put a lot of emphasis in at the start of the playoffs against Orlando is for him to do things faster. They are not going to let you and just jockey around with it. They are going to be on top of it right away. You have got to do things a lot faster. Your moves have got to be quicker and then just up into your shot. Just jockeying around trying to create space and go one-on-one against a set defense the way that they play him, chances are it is going to be tough for him. But if he does things just a little quicker–coming off screens, looking to shoot the ball right away–those are the kind of things that free you up.”
But is J.J. comfortable playing that way considering his deliberate style?
“Comfortable? I don’t know. Capable? Yes. He has shown the ability to come off screens and shoot the ball. Certainly I have seen him go into moves a lot quicker. I don’t know how comfortable he is doing it but I know he is capable.”

I’M BACK.
Listen, let me give you guys the truth. Joe Johnson is not even a star nonetheless a superstar. He and Al are like Kevin Love or David Lee. Love and Lee are not all-stars but make all-star teams because of stats. Well, Al and Joe make all-star teams because of there teams record.
Joe Johnson, was clearly taking a shot at Jeff Teague when he said all we did was run pick and roll and never got our scorers the ball. Joe Johnson played with Nash, Mr. master pick and roll himself and did not complain then, you know why? Because he was not getting paid to be a superstar, now Joe has got the Kobe syndrome which means he thinks everything is about him, he had better win the game or its his fault. No Kobe you need to give the ball to Pau or Andruw whoever Dirk is guarding. No Joe, you need to pass out of double teams to the open person and go set picks for Teague and roll or pop, let’s see them double that.
Lastly, I have heard this MC guy has problems with standing up like a man. I am back and you will have to stand up and tell the truth. MC, was Joe taking a shot at Teague when he said all we did was run pick and roll.

no rebounds no rings. Josh Smith can be Zach Randolph if we move him up to SF. He played as close to the basket as he could yesterday and had to rebound AND get the team in transition.
The SF,SG, and PG are the ones who are supposed to be trying to dunk or lay the ball in yet our best finishers in transition are Al, Josh, and Teague.
We can continue to think Joe is Dwight Howard and surround him with Marvin Williams 1 shot per game. Or we can pull Marvin and put Collins in with Smith and Horford.
Crash the boards and get extra possessions for Crawford and Joe Johnson.
If the SG and PG position are the shirt of the team and are responsible for offense, then the Hawks are playing with no pants.
Memphis has size inside we don’t. If we had Zach Randolph instead of Al we would play him at C and let Marvin get away with not rebounding.
Also, did u guys here Tom Thibodeau call Marvin one of the most underrated players in the league? Maybe off the bench or at shooting guard but as a starter? He just lets Deng switch off of him and cannot punish other teams by posting up and dunking on a shooting guard switch like Smith can.
I feel pity that Drew won the first game. He now believes that it is possible to win with Al and Marvin shooting over 7 footers because he saw Joe and Jamal to shoot 60% again and hit 5 threes.
Meanwhile, Thibodeau adjusted his schemes. We now hit 40% of our shots like in Orlando and we continue to get pounded on the boards and punished for misses because Larry Drew likes jump shooters at the sacrifice of defense and posting up to draw double coverage.
lol he must hate his former teammate Magic Johnson.

U guys don’t think Zach Randolph and a center may have something to do with it?
Sad, but I believe if we had Zach Randolph we’d play him at power forward and Josh Smith at center.
Sit Marvin Williams. Make the game a rebounding match not a jump shooting match with Rose. And next game notice how much Thibodeau tells Rose to run a high pick and roll.
Josh Smith has to come up high and then there’s no one in the paint. Contrary to popular belief, Josh Smith at small forward would help our defense. Either Collins or Horford would be in the paint with Smith coming blindside to block or alter the shot.
Either way Rose can get 40 as long as nobody else gets their offensive rebounds and tip out rebounds. #OrlandoStrategy

With Marvin struggling, I think it is a good idea to bring him off the bench, because that might get him going. He had some good games coming off the bench.
I would start ZaZa instead of Collins though, because ZaZa might play better knowing he is starting and getting extended minutes.
And I think northcyde’s point is JJ has to get shots up. Rose is averaging 27 shot attempts per game against the Hawks. In game 1, he shot 41%. In game 2, he shot 39%, and in game 3, he shot 59%. But regardless of whether his shot is on or off, Rose will take his shots, and trust his guys (especially Noah and Gibson) to rebound.
But JJ has to move quickly. He just moves too slow, and he needs to let the other players know pre-game what his plan is, and the players can crash the board.

I wish we had a high quality center like MEM but we don’t. The best we can do is Jason Collins and Pachulia with Horford at PF and Smith at SF to help with shotblocking and rebounding that Collins can’t do.
Things that Collins can do with Smith and Horford?
-Set screens for JJ
-Roll middle
-allow Horford to shoot
and crash boards with Smith and Horford at the 3 &4
Drew seems oblivious to the fact that Smith has yet to see the 3. Damien Wilkins at the 3 is not going to help. I love his willingness to defend and attack but in the end we need to go back to the Orlando series. Collins, Smith, Horford setting screens for Crawford and Johnson.
And DO NOT sleep on Teague. Can u imagine what a point guard is to do when he has no center setting screens?
He has a 6′8 PF who isn’t automatic but can run and play SF/point-forward.
A 6′8 SF in Williams who can’t post up, a 6′10 PF playing center who isn’t athletic enough to do much outside pick and pop but can run.
A 6′8 SG shoot It’s an equal opportunity offense and has short arms so he can barely dunk and doesn’t try to dunk in transition. (watch him) Likes to dominate the ball.
Play the Orlando lineup. Crawford, Marvin and Pachulia off the bench when we need changes of pace, shooting or to go to the speed lineup.
As is Hawks are dead in the water and playing a undersized style that has many people out of the playoffs.

This team would be a whole lot better and easier to cheer for I they would just fix,at least, the easy problems that can be fixed. Sit Josh down every time he shoots a jumper more than 10 feet, since he’s 0-17 YES 0-17, beyond 17 ft and 60% with shots 10′ft or less and play a true 5 in the middle since we are getting killed on the glass. Najeh and Northcyde, regardless of whether it’s Al or Josh or Marvin, if we had Collins and Zsa Zsa in the game at all times it would help tremendously even up the rebounds and especially slow down the offensive reb that are killing us. You 2 keep lamenting the fact we don’t have a true super star. Ok we don’t have one and we are not getting one anytime soon but there are easy things we could do to make it better if someone would set Josh (the sacred cow u guys feel can’t be traded) down and set him straight or tell hi
he will be traded in the off season, and if LD WOULD STOP TINKERING WITH THE LINEUP AND PLAY A TRUE CENTER.

Guys don’t you remember when Smith was playing against Turkoglu he tried to post him up but Turk would push him out of the lane?
Eventually Smith started scoring and Josh started drawing doubles. We ran cross screens to try to get JJ Redick or Richardson on Josh.
Josh is huge (he is actually the same size as Beasley and Lebron, albeit lighter) as a SF and no team has found a counter to it.
With Josh, Joe, Collins, and Horford we have four screeners and can get switches so easily and post ups that will draw double for Joe and Jamal and Teague.
But a 3 guard lineup will not get it done. Joe “fighting thru” doubles is just what they want. As long as we don’t have a combination Josh, Pachulia, and Horford in the paint bumping bodies for boards. The Bulls are in good shape.
Have you ever heard of “a missed shot is just as good as an assist?”
That’s what elite teams do. They rebound and put back and draw fouls off of playing hard in the paint. Ask Drew why James Worthy never shot a 3 but is a HOF sf and part time pf.
He rebounded, crashed the boards and pushed the ball in transition and ran.
We don’t have Kareem at center. But we do have a Rambis and an athlete who likes running the wing with Teague and Horford and getting dunks in transition.
And the dunks are not even most important. Its the early foul trouble that Chicago will be in if they challenge us in the break. The point guard is often the first one back.
Collins boxes out=> Horford rebounds Josh takes off=> pass to Teague => pass to Smith cutting on the 3-2 fast break and Rose/Deng will have to decide whether to let him dunk or make him earn it AND spend 1 foul. 2 fouls early and the coach sits u down. Takes u out of the rhythm of the game.
The aggressive team often wins. We have not put Josh, Horford, and Teague in position to be aggressive. Sit Marvin down for Collins (and Pachulia if he gets winded) and our players suddenly become a team again. And our paint suddenly becomes clogged.

It’s not that he was taking a shot at Teague. Teague doesn’t call the plays. Coach Drew calls the plays. So if anything, he was taking a shot at Drew.
The facts are that if Joe Johnson isn’t scoring or dishing to other people, we cannot beat this Bulls team. I mean, unless Teague starts going for 25 points and 12 assists, the offense still has to run through Mr. Johnson.
Don’t get me wrong, Teague did a great job last night. But if he’s the only one scoring, the Bulls will take that all day. JJ took a total of 2 shots in the 3rd quarter, when we were still somewhat within striking distance. Part of that is his fault. The other part is Drew not calling the plays to get the ball to him in the right spots.
And the difference between what Teague was doing last night, and what Nash does, is that Nash always looks to pass first, shoot second. Teague looks to shoot first, and pass second. Once again, Teague did a great job last night offensively, but it still doesn’t discount the fact that JJ was non-existant in the offense in the 2nd half.
And I will agree with O’Brien. If we go big, I’d start Zaza instead of Collins, just to see if he can give us that offensive rebounding presence in the half court.
I’ll even take it a step further. At some point in Game 4, I’d like for the Hawks to go “super big”, just to see how that would work. And one or two of you have talked about this when Hinrich went down, but I can’t remember who. But hwo about this lineup?
PG – Johnson
G – Marvin
F – Smith
PF – Horford
C – Zaza
Maybe you can’t play that grouping for long, but it would be something to experiment with, just to see what kind of matchups we could create on offense, and if that lineup would help us rebound better.
As for the OKC – MEM game, I just get jealous of other teams sometimes, when they have the right kind of players. Both teams shot the ball poorly overall, but their frontlines kept them in the game by hitting the glass. Memphis had 20 offensive rebounds, the Thunder had 18. And the defense was spectacular at times by Memphis. That 4th quarter was tremendous.
Just wish we could string together about 3 or 4 games like how they played tonight.

LOL Z-Bo is a power forward. What did Al Horford get when he played next to Zaza for 17 minutes and Collins for 18 minutes? 31 points, 16 rebounds.
Josh Smith did not even play that game and both Rose and JJ missed 15 shots each. We should be crushing the Bulls.
Josh Smith posts up Deng=> hook shot. JJ shoots brick=> Collins boxes out=>Horford rebounds dunk.
And with Josh Smith instead of Marvin our defense becomes more disruptive to Bulls and the Bulls don’t go on that run. Yet and all we still clogged the paint and won on the strength of Al at PF and Collins/Pachulia smart plays and hustle.

Al Horford is a very fundamentally sound, average to above average Center. But with the lack of Centers in the NBA, that qualifies for the All Star Team. In the East you have
Dwight
Al
Noah
Bogut
And not much else at Center, so that is why Al is an All Star. Not the fact that he is great.

Joakim Noah had 24 in 5 last series and is on pace to reach 24 in 4 games. 6 ORB per game

David Lee was an All-Star center. “All-Star” does not equal wins.
Joakim Noah will be an All Star next year. And Al bulking up does not help us right now. Nor does it solve the problem that Josh is not drawing double coverage at the power forward. Nor does it solve the problem that Marvin could go for 30 tomorrow and he’d only have 5 rebounds and not enough free throw attempts to put Deng or any key Bulls player on the bench.
For the time being we have proven we can beat the Bulls
matching Joakim Noah with some girth at center.
The key is once we get that stop do we draw double coverage in the posts? have Josh cutting for the dunk and 1 or Marvin hitting the 3?
Or do we have Al Horford spacing the floor with a mid range jump shot with no one else crashing the glass for a 2nd opportunity?

From the last blog: “Hubie Brown said a good coach is able to get his best players high percentage shots in high percentage areas (based on the player’s regular season statistics). But our coach doesnt know how to do that.”
OK I’m not going to defend LD, BUT, we all just saw what happens when a team plays great defense (Memphis). Scott Brooks was COY last year, but Allen refused to let Durant get to his sweet spots. LD is right about one thing. A “star” HAS to overcome defensive schemes. Rose sure did it last night. Durant couldn’t do it today.
Sometimes you have to give great defense it’s due. And the Bulls are the best defense in the league.

What goes overlooked sometimes in that regular season win against the Bulls was that the Bulls dominated the first half. The Hawks came storming back in the second half because they won the hustle points — forcing turnovers, getting offensive boards, deflecting passes, etc — that they were losing in the first half. In other words they beat the Bulls at their own game in the 2nd half to pull off the comeback.
The Bulls are not that great of an offensive team. What they are really good at is creating extra opportunities for themselves by making hustle plays. Rose can score however much he wants, but if the Bulls are winning the battle of hustle plays the Hawks don’t have a chance. And that really doesn’t have a whole lot to do with the configuration of the starting lineup. Noah and Boozer are not such imposing physical presences that they would negate Al and Smoove’s ability to crash the offensive glass, deflect passes, and challenge shots at the rim. Whoever the Hawks start, it really just comes down to wanting it, which they didn’t in Game 3. Like the Chuckster says, the only real technique to rebounding is to just go get the damn ball.

303,
You many not want to read this.
From Jeff Schultz;
Question: Does Smith even realize he is 0-for-17 from beyond 15 feet in this series, and 5-for-33 in the playoffs? Conversely, he is shooting 60 percent from nine feet and closer (38-of-63). The lesson there should be easy to locate.
Coach Larry Drew was asked Saturday if he ever has been a part of such schizophrenic team as a player or coach. He smiled.
“I will admit — I do have an interesting group,” he said.
Everybody laughed. It was as if Sybil had just been described as having an interesting personality.
“What happened [Friday] night, it did catch me off guard,” Drew continued. “I really thought we would start that game too energized. I was expecting a lot of early turnovers. I thought we would be too hyped and have too much energy. I thought I would have to find a way to tone my guys down.”
There are only so many times a coach should have to threaten to use a cattle prod. Concepts such as competitive instincts, professional pride and even the motivation generally associated with earning a seven- or eight-digit salary should take over.
But too often with the Hawks, that’s not the case. Something is missing in their DNA. And they are way past their growth spurt..

“Seriously why is nobody talking about the fact that all star al has attempted two free throws in this SERIES? ”
Iv’e been saying it since the Orlando series, but most here want to focus on Josh Smith, like he is the cause of all of our problems. If you look at the stats, Josh has been to the line more than anyone on the team. He is not hitting his free throws, but he is attacking more than anyone on the team. There is no reason that your starting center or power forward gets only 2 free throw attemtpts. I will be the first to say it. Al Horford is the one that should be moved if possible. He will bring back more than anyone else, and I really believe that he is closer to a Buck Williams type, than a dominant power forward.

The problem in this series is no one is getting physical with Rose. They all look at him and observe him in his attacking them. No one wants to committ a hard foul or throw a body at him in the paint. No one on the Hawks wants to committ to dirty garbage work in the paint. That’s what made Rodman so good. He knew what his role was and as crazy as he was-he was committed. The Hawks want to win, but they don’t want to sacrifice. They want the shots to fall, but they are not in the gym over the summer perfecting their craft like Rose. They are not perfecting their free throws-which everyone can do. How many free throws do they practice? Probably not many. Break this bunch up now and hope to get some good pieces maybe from the Lakers-who will soon like Magic said, will need to be broken up. Oh, what am I thinking-I forgot that Management will stay up muck this thing up again-so maybe there’s no chance for this city of Atlanta, except that the owners dislodge this organization like Sacramento and start a new franchise elsewhere and Atlanta will not have an NBA team at all. I call this a good start.

Is anyone out there wondering why J. Crawford should come off the bench, especially at this point instead of start? Everyone knows that J. Crawford comes in like clockwork at about the 4:12 mark in the first quarter. That may be ideal when your team is clicking on offense and J. Crawford comes in and ices the cake for a fatter lead. But hey, we all know how the offense is suspect and will stall early in the game. Why not start Jamal and get those 3’s in early. If he’ s not clicking right away-then sit him and go to plan B. I don’t think Jamal will be back anyway, so if you are the coach-and your team is reeling in a downward spiral-such as these Hawks-then try to be creative by shuffling you lineup and see what combos work. What do you go to lose at this point?

Wow, it’s only a dislocation and he wants to return. That is a huge break (not literally) for Boston. That seemed like a gruesome, Willis McGahee-like injury.

“Thank God! We didn’t trade Teague when Jordan Crawford left, or for
Jason thompson. ”
Haha I had forgotten about the Teague-for-Thompson trade. That looks like a dodged bullet in hindsight.
