Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 99, Hawks 82
11:57 pm May 6, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
When D-Rose is going like this–making 3-pointers, baking in scores form impossible angles, etc.–not sure what else you can do to him except maybe put him on his butt a few times. “He hit one floater when I thought I got a piece of it,” Teague said. “I knew tonight was his night.”
- But you don’t even have to look at Rose’s amazing performance to find fault with the Hawks.
- Rose didn’t have anything to do with Noah and Taj Gibson pushing around Atlanta’s bigs. He wasn’t even on the court for the bulk of Chicago’s decisive run in the second quarter (and neither were the other starters). Rose did not limit Marvin to one rebound in 23 minutes, induce Smoove into jacking up Js as the Hawks tried to mount a comeback or make Al passive with the ball.
- There were a few signs of fissures among the Hawks afterwards. Everyone seemed to have a different idea of what they need to do for Game 4.
- J.J. didn’t like the offensive approach: “It just seemed as if a lot of times we just ran a lot of pick-and-rolls and I was just kind of buried in the corner. I just thought we played into their hands. We didn’t do anything, I thought, to get our scorers the basketball to make plays. They come with the double team and they make us give it up. We can’t win like that. If you look at Game 1 it was nothing like that. Obviously they made adjustments but at the same time we have to stick with what got us here.”
- So what should the Hawks do? “Honestly, I just got to force the issue,” Joe said. “In Game 4, I am definitely going to do that. I am not going to succumb to the double team and give it up every time because that’s what they want. We are playing right into their hands. I blame myself for that.”
- From my perspective watching the game live, it seemed like J.J. had his chances to make something happen but fell back into Iso-Joe dribbling. When Joe starts talking about forcing the issue, the Hawks are in trouble.
- Al: “We had too much one-on-one. When you do that, this team is too good defensively. We just need to do a better job moving the ball and running the offense the right way. If one guy is not running the offense right, it’s not going to work for others. So I think that’s our biggest problem right now on the offensive end.”
- Al is guilty of it, too. He’s holding the ball trying to figure out his moves when his best move might be catching it and quickly driving to the basket or, if that’s not there, pass the ball. When Al takes his time going inside it’s easy for the Bulls to both help against him and keep their own men within closing distance.
- The Bulls are taking away the pick-and-pop, too. “That’s all we’ve been doing and they’ve been doing a great job at contesting everything,” Al said. “I got a couple touches in the post but I think we can do more of that. Because I feel playing inside out would work to our advantage. I hope that’s something coach looks into.”
- I’m not sure if Al can get anything in the post. His college buddy is making it tough in there along with the rest of Chicago’s aggressive bigs and Al’s post moves are still limited.
- Al needs to do something of the Hawks hope to rally in this series. “It’s going to be tough for us to win without him,” Joe said. “We’ve just got to get him back on track.”
- Jamal slipped free for an open J early and then never saw much space again. “Whenever I’m at the top of the key, I see a second defender,” he said. “They’re coming until I pass the ball. They’re kind of taking it out of my hands. That’s fine. I just want to make sure that we make them pay because we have an advantage
somewhere out there with two guys on me. if we don’t make them pay, then they’re going to continue to do it.”
- Chicago’s superior depth was glaring in this game. Their sixth through 10th guys are all legit NBA rotation players.
- Jamal suggested the Hawks didn’t like it when L.D. called timeout after D-Rose ran a one-man fastbreak through their defense (after J.J. missed an iso fadeaway). “I think everybody was surprised by that,” Jamal said. “Whenever you have to call a timeout less than a minute into the game, it’s kind of disheartening. But coach felt like he had to do it.”
- Yes, he did. “When I don’t see the effort on getting back in transition and allowing them to get to the basket without a contest, I knew we were not committed like we were in Games 1 and 2,” Drew said. “To be perfectly honest, that was really discouraging to have to call a timeout that early.”
- The Bulls hammered the Hawks on the boards again. They have more good rebounders, yes, but they also are just hungrier and more physical when it comes to loose balls.
- “We didn’t come out with any physicality,” L.D. said. “They completely beat us up, particularly in the paint.”
- And then there’s the D-Rose problem. Atlanta’s screen-roll defense was powerless against his dynamic drives to the basket and the inevitable result of Atlanta’s bigs helping were putbacks and drive-and-dishes.
- “We were doing the same [coverages] tonight,” Al said. “I think they made adjustments as a team and they figured out how to attack it. They totally exploited it. We now have to make adjustments and change it up. It’s not working like it did the first two games.”
- “When he gets it going, we have to figure out a way to get the ball out of his hands and make someone else beat us,” Josh said.
- D-Rose hasn’t been getting to the line but maybe it’s worth it to put him there if it means he has to take some hard falls. “You don’t want to see anybody hurt but this is a physical game,” Jamal said. “We have to figure out what we want to do with him. We can’t give him both ways. You can’t give him threes and the outside jumper and the layups as well.”
- Some positives: Teague played his third straight superlative game. Josh had 13 rebounds and eventually stopped jacking Js and went hard to the hole. Al eventually got ticked off, too, and was more aggressive.
- That about covers it.

In my attempt to find a positive, I continue to endorse Teague playing as many minutes as he is physically able to. I will stop at that or else I’ll start saying negative things. I will ask a question – why aren’t our All Stars required to go to the postgame press conference and answer for their performances – win or lose.

“If anyone but Teague gives up 30+ to the MVP, ya’ll would be asking for their heads (let alone 40+)!
(I don’t mean to say this as an indictment of Teague’s defense. Rather it is only pointed out as an indictment of you haters (of some players)/lovers (of other players). Let your bias show, let it show.)”
I can’t speak for others, but I’d be more inclined to criticize Teague’s defense if Rose hadn’t been hitting contested shots as well. It didn’t seem to matter tonight what kind of shot Rose took or how good the D was — if he let it go, it was going in. With that said, Teague is usually pretty good at pressuring the ball, and I thought he could have done that in the 1st quarter — even if he risked fouling — to get Rose out of his rhythm.

Watching the Mavs in the fourth, its good to see good ball movement. Something which the Hawks know very little about.
I’ve said this all season. Regardless of what happens in the playoffs, I think the Hawks need to shake up the roster, and I still dont think LD is the right coach for the Hawks. He is the right coach to beat Orlando.
MC,
I wish you would have asked Al what’s happened to his shot?

I didn’t get a chance to respond to this during the game because my battery died out, but…
“This is bull. You don’t need superstars to win in the playoffs. You need great team basketball. It’s all about the team. Ask the Lakers why their team filled with superstars lost to a hard-working Pistons team with no bona-fide superstar in the 2004 finals. Media-deemed superstars sell a lot of tickets, but they don’t necessarily win you the title. ”
You are making the same mistake Rick Sund makes, by citing the one single exception to the rule. The 2004 Pistons are the ONLY team that won in the playoffs without a superstar.
It’s easy to sit here as fans of a team that has largely been devoid of superstars throughout its history and resent the media for riding the jocks of superstars. But the fact is that those players have largely earned it. There’s a reason LeBron and Wade and Rose and Kobe get the press they do whereas nobody on the Hawks gets one tenth of that press. It’s because they are transcendental players. They are players who can and do regularly take over games and singlehandedly win games for their teams.
Of course you need team basketball to win. But a team without a superstar can play fantastic team basketball and they will still almost certainly fall short. See this year’s Sixers for example. A team with a superstar (or better yet superstars) can play merely good team basketball and dominate everyone else. See every Lakers championship team for example.
Across sports, superstars erase mistakes. Having a superstar allows your team to make mistakes here and there when it comes to execution, because that superstar has the kind of talent to make plays regardless of the execution. When you don’t have a superstar, you have to be perfect as a team all the time. And getting five good players to execute all the time is a lot harder than getting one or two great players to be great while everyone else plays their role.

From an X’s and O’s standpoint, it’s easy to make the argument that the Hawks can still win this series. Game 1 went a lot like Game 1 against Orlando, where the Hawks shot at an unnaturally high clip to win the game. Game 2 went a lot like Game 2 against Orlando, where the Hawks lost an ugly game where they largely shot themselves in the foot. Game 3 tonight went a lot like Game 5 against Orlando, where the Hawks didn’t really show up from the start and the Magic were making every possible shot.
It’s conceivable that Games 3, 4, and 6 of the Orlando series could still take place, and it’s possible to make the argument that the Hawks still have a working blueprint to beat the Bulls that is likely to work if they close out harder on open shooters, crash the boards, and create hustle points like they did in Game 1.
From an intangibles standpoint, though, this series is over for this mentally weak team. Tickets that were going for $45 on Stubhub before the game are now down to $24. It’s quite conceivable that all these new tickets on sale on Stubhub will end up being sold by Hawks fans to Bulls fans. Tonight’s crowd was probably about 70-30 in favor of the Hawks (the Bulls fans were much louder than that ratio might indicate because they had something to cheer about). I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sunday crowd is 50-50. And we have seen in the regular season how the Hawks respond when the crowd is largely in favor of the other team. All it would take in that situation is for Rose to come out hitting a few shots early for the Hawks to get demoralized and fold.
I hope I’m wrong, obviously, but I see Game 4 going exactly like Game 3. And down 3-1 going back to Chicago, there’s little chance that we will see a Game 6.

I agree with Michael…I’m scared of watching Joe Johnson “force the issue”. Might as well start the offseason right now.
Remember when we used to hear about Al Horford loving to play against his buddy Noah? I’m thinking it’s going to be a while before we hear any of those tales again. Al has been terrible. Josh Smith is my least favorite player in basketball, but Horford deserves to be ripped, too.
Zaza just can’t play in this series. I really think it was easier for him playing Howard. Howard is just in the post. He’s not moving around like Noah, Gibson, and any other Bull big. Zaza can just play D by banging Howard, The Bulls bigs won’t allow him to do that. Zaza is basically useless in this series.
Josh Smith stat line looks fine. But, no way you could watch tonight’s game and say he played well. The jumpers are killers and his defense was not good. Will be a reason to celebrate when he gets traded this summer (or whenever the lockout ends). I can’t stand watching that guy play.
Teague has been good. Only positive tonight.

Bandwagon fans!! this series is not over. Again, we lost because of heart and hustle. I thought JT played his heart out. I do wish he would have been more selfish and take the game over. He also should pressure Rose 64 feet. I disagree with Joe totally. If he is being double teamed – SOMEBODY IS OPEN!!! The adjustment is NOT to have Josh open shooting jumpers. He did it a couple of times- SLASH to the basket! Joe did just pound the ball and not pass it. This game i simple, find the open man.

“When D-Rose is going like this–making 3-pointers, baking in scores form impossible angles, etc.–not sure what else you can do to him except maybe put him on his butt a few times. ”
Isn’t that what LD used as his excuse for not playing Teague in the Hawks’ first loss to the Bulls in the regular season, that perimeter D didn’t matter as much as the Hawks not putting Rose on his ass?
Apparently that bullsh-t explanation didn’t make its way into his playoff game plan. The Hawks sure could have used some hard fouls in the first half tonight.
Zaza is supposed to be the Hawks’ rebounding machine/enforcer off the bench. Dude hasn’t done sh-t on the boards and isn’t committing hard fouls. If he’s going to play like pre-trade deadline Zaza, give Etan Thomas his minutes and let him commit a couple of flagrant fouls.

Northcyde is going to like hearing this.
I actually agree though. I didn’t think Joe played that bad on offense for most of the game. I was surprised to see that he finished with such a poor stat line. It’s not like he was throwing up bricks when he did get the ball. They need to run some more plays for him early to get the ball in a position where he can drive it and hit the floater. Teague was spectacular in the first quarter, but the downside was that Joe didn’t get touches at all. There has to be a good way to take advantage of Teague’s quickness and ability to get to the rim and Joe’s scoring ability in the mid range and the paint at the same time. Surely our offensive genius head coach can make the necessary adjustment.

Because of KA BOOM, Jason Terry polished of the Lakers. If you have a leaking pipe, do you KA-BOOM the entire home? No fix the problem. If Tyson Chandler was a Hawk, or another athletic rebounding machine, we would not in this situation. He was available, but we got Josh Powell. I still think our problem is SF. I always felt we had a point guard. We should have traded for a SF. I think Al Thorton would have looked better than trading and getting Hilton Armstrong.

I agree 100 with Najeh. Based on Joe’s comments up there and he has made a similar comment at the end of February during a bad stretch, regarding the game plans and players nit knowing their roles nor what to do as a unit to score.
All this points to this team being poorly coached. This team needs a bona fide coach. I guess Mr. Drew was not the answer to solve the Mr. Woodson puzzle. At some point ypu have to look at these so called professional basketball players.
This is not the right group of players, so ultimately you have to look at the GM. If he has no autonomy? Then you have top look at the ownership group.

Nothing but a sea of blue tonight because their fans WORE THE BLUE T-SHIRTS. I guess we can’t expect Atlanta fans to know what to do at a NBA game since they only show up in the playoffs.

They run a so called Motion Offense, but all I see is dribble dribble dribble shoot/pass as the shot clock runs out or just bad shots…Where’s the cutting, slashing, picks, back-screens, etc…The Bulls are beating them at something they should be doing…ATL is simply being outplayed on offense and defense…The players are not on the same page, as Josh has a decent game, but the rest might as well sat the bench…Teague has showed that ATL will have to pay up or somebody else is gonna snatch him up…As we all know, you never know what Hawks team is gonna show up..I see a team that looks scared of Boozer and Noah tho, why???

I’ve never seen Horford play so bad. Never. I’m not ready to give up on him turning things around in this series.
Just p#ssed that this team comes out and gets blown out, again. They complain and complain about the lack of support (which also p#sses me off, as a long time season ticket holder), but continually perform horribly infront of their biggest home crowds.
Rose hit some tough shots tonight, but he will do that pretty much every night. The Hawks D was horrible. Al and Josh do nothing. Rose drives the lane at will. Marvin killed me when he went over, instead of under, the screen set by the white stiff. That led to a wide open Korver 3, which he made.
Korver is going to kill the Hawks in one of these games. I’m thinking it’s coming on Sunday.

We got out-coached and out-played…the coach of the year had a defensive gameplan for the Hawks including sending a trap at Jamal when dude crossed halfcourt with the ball….Larry Drew was like “ummm should i call the thumbs up or thumbs down play?” No reason to start Marvin….ever. Start Collins and keep Josh on the low blocks so he can get easy baskets and offensive rebounds. With that being said i fully expect Marvin to pull off the warm-ups and walk out with the starters and Josh to be camped around the 3 point line at which point i will be turning my television off.

Plus, I think most of the guys who run teams in the NBA are idiots. Almost willing to bet the Hawks could fool someone into giving up a decent player for Josh. At least Hawks fans can look forward to a PG to fill that void we’ve had on our roster forever.
You can’t compare the 2004 Pistons to this squad the Hawks have currently assembled. First, as Najeh pointed out, that team is the lone exception to the rule. Also, just compare the character of that team to the one we have here. That team had leaders. They had guys that wouldn’t settle for average/mediocore. The Hawks have no such personalities on the roster.
Again, we’ll see how the rest of this series plays out. But, I’ll say this now, I’m not opposed to moving any peices from this team not named Teague. Till Sunday, I’ll keep my frustration in check. How the Hawks respond to back to back terrible games will determine how I feel about this group moving forward.

Larry Drew has done nothing to keep his job. He lost 9 less games than Woody during the regular season. Also failed to develop young talent and won simply one more playoff game than Woody ever did in a single season, allowed Josh Smith to not only revert but just do what he wanted to in every way. Turned Al Horford into the weakest jumpshooting so-called all-star C in the history of the game.

J.J. didn’t like the offensive approach: “It just seemed as if a lot of times we just ran a lot of pick-and-rolls and I was just kind of buried in the corner.
So what should the Hawks do? “Honestly, I just got to force the issue,” Joe said. “In Game 4, I am definitely going to do that. I am not going to succumb to the double team and give it up every time because that’s what they want. We are playing right into their hands. I blame myself for that.”
From my perspective watching the game live, it seemed like J.J. had his chances to make something happen but fell back into Iso-Joe dribbling. When Joe starts talking about forcing the issue, the Hawks are in trouble.
From Najeh: Northcyde is going to like hearing this.
*********************
You DAMN RIGHT I like hearing that. I think he finally gets it . . I hope.
We CANNOT win this series with Joe Johnson playing like a complimentary player no matter what anybody says, including the beat writer, who thinks we’re in trouble if he forces the issue.
LOL . . hell . . we’re in trouble if he DOESN’T force the issue. If he or Jamal isn’t scoring . . (( talking like Dr. Dre in “Training Day” )) we’re DEAD . . we’re FVCKING DEAD!!
What do you want him to do MC? Pass it to Horford so that he can shoot a jumper that he can’t make anymore? Pass it to Smith for 3, since you aptly cited how he shot a better percentage than JJ from 3 this year, like he was an adequate shooter or something? How about passing it to Marvin? Is that what you want him to do out of the double team?
I hope JJ finally sees the light. And it took Rose taking over Philips for him to see it. JJ simply has to get his shots up, and frankly, I don’t care how he does it. Because even if he shoots and misses, we have a greater chance of gathering up a rebound off of his miss, than a rebound off of a miss of one of our bigs shooting a jumper.
Joe and Jamal are also our best “bad shot” makers. So if it’s anyone on the team I want taking bad shots, it’s those two. I’d rather see them take a bad shot, than for Smith to take a wide open 3 or Marvin to take a 21 footer.
The only thing I ask of JJ, is what Najeh and some other people have criticized him for. All I ask is that when you get the ball, do something RIGHT THEN and THERE with it. If they’re going to double you, you won’t have time to size your defender up to take him via ISO. You’re either going to have to get that shot up before the double team comes, or you’re going to have to go on the move and attack that double team. And if you drive the ball, don’t always look for the floater. Look to get to the rim, and possibly even draw contact. But it has to be aggressive, no matter what you do. Jamal, you do the same. WE honestly need both of you in Game 4.
Folks . . every lead scorer in the NBA has to force the issue at times, in order for his team to win the game. The whole “team concept” sounds nice. But you don’t want anybody and everybody shooting the ball, just because they are open. So when the star player starts to force the issue, it’s up to everybody else to be in position to keep the possession alive. Chicago is doing this by letting Rose, Deng, and Korver take 85% of the jumpers, while the rest of the guys crash the offensive board to rebound their misses. That’s what we did last year, and got us the #2 highest offensive rating.
We’re not winning a DAMN THING with Joe Johnson playing like he’s “one of the guys”. Everybody doesn’t need to be shooting the ball, especially out on the perimeter.
Even Barkley alluded to this after the Game 2 loss. He essentially said that he wished he could put “Jamal’s brain in Joe’s body” . . because Jamal has the mentality of an aggressive scorer, while JJ picks and chooses his spots to score. And that’s what makes him passive in some games.
12 shots from your leading scorer is unacceptable. He doesn’t need to be deferring shots so that Horford and Smith can get more open jumpers, especially in these playoffs when they’re not falling. If anything, tell those guys to do what Noah and Gibson did tonight, and get a few of their points via offensive rebounds.
JJ . . I hope you mean this man. Force the damn issue. Get your shots up, and see what happens.

“I wonder if in Al’s case in particular fear of the two foul rule is taking away his aggressiveness on D.” – Najeh
You think? Whole team maybe? This team has the talent to beat CHI but I don’t think it has the heart. Start at the top with disingenuous LD who betrays his favoritism all season with his lineups and makes zero effort to either develop Teague or develop a team offense with Teague integrated prior to round 2 of the playoffs where he’s your most consistent performer.
Then pay $120m to a guy who doesn’t care if the fans show up, makes excuses, says he doesn’t have to take all the blame. In short, give a superstar contract to a gutless coward and see how far he takes you. Then enable Josh Smith to take more than 200 more three pointers than he took in Woody’s last season as coach and complain about the results. Then surgically remove Al Horford’s huevos. Make him live in fear of that second foul and see what an aggressive player you’ve created.

Joe Johnson is becoming wack. He needs to embrace pick and rolls and double teams. Actually, he should be running pick and rolls and see if they will double that, if they do. Hit the open man (roll man) that man then hits a guard coming off of a baseline screen that guard is in the lane and roll man is also free to rebound. Simple

@ O’Brien . . he probably deserves a D tonight, I agree. At some point, you have to aggressively double Rose, and make him pass it, just like they’re doing to JJ. And on offense, he needed to be running plays to get the ball into the scorer’s hands, whether it be JJ or Jamal, or even more Jeff Teague.

Yep, the Bulls are who we though they are. A one man team. I can remember a couple of years ago when Rose burst onto the seen in the playoffs against Rondo. Rondo could not guard Rose and vice versa, but Celtics eventually won that series that people were calling a classic at the time because KG, Perkins, Big Baby, etc. did not allow Noah to kill them on the boards. That’s the series that prompted Noah to not like KG and claim that he is dirty. We don’t have a KG,Perkins, or even a Big Baby that’s the difference. Believe what you wish but Rose is not beating us and will not. It is our bigs getting killed by there bigs

All season long, I was worried about what impact his “coaching strategies” would have on the players long-term. You can say that Drew has done an okay job so far in the playoffs, but that doesn’t make up for the mistakes that he made for the entirety of the season.
I still believe that a lot of the mental issues that Josh and Al have are a direct result of coaching. Al will basically do whatever the coach asks him to do on the court, and for the most part, he’s being asked to set screens and take jumpers off of pick-and-pops. His quote after this game basically says it all. As for Josh, we know he can tone down the jump shot attempts if he has the proper encouragement and knows that there are actual consequences. Look at what he did last season. I, honestly, feel like last season (2009-2010) was Josh’s best season of his career so far, and that’s because he played to his strengths. Say what you want about Woodson, but if there’s one thing he did a good job of, it was in partially managing Josh and getting him to play the right way.
I know our players are not perfect, they’re far from perfect, but the poor coaching that they’ve suffered from all season long has only made matters worse. Al seems like a totally different player these days when it comes to how he plays on the offensive end, and I really doubt that he just mysteriously decided to completely devote his game to jumpers on his own. Someone had to motivate him toward doing that. If you watched this guy in college and during his previous years with the Hawks, he’s never shied away from interior play and nor contact. Also, Josh seems more confused than ever, and I can understand why. His coach criticizes him for taking bad shots, but at the same time, tells him to shoot the ball with confidence and not to hesitate to shoot shots that he works on. L.D. wants Josh to shoot “in the flow of the offense”, but I don’t think that Josh even knows what that means anymore. L.D. sends so many mixed messages that Josh seems like a wreck on the offensive end when he does anything but attack the basket. I know Josh is a stubborn guy, but I think his mental issues and confusion with what a good shot really is are directly related to his poor coaching.
Also, it’s clear that Joe and Jamal are not fans of L.D. or his offense either. Joe seems totally confused when he is not the center of the offensive attack for atlanta, and you can sense his hidden frustration in his comments after losses like this where he isn’t the main point of attack. He seems unsure of what L.D. wants him to do at times, and unless L.D. just rides Joe and Joe has it going like he did in game 1, this offense and Joe Johnson never really seem to blend well together, unless it’s against a terrible defensive team. Also, Jamal is a scorer, plain and simple, everyone knows that, and everyone is sick of watching him try to play point guard. Not only does that role render him almost useless as an offensive threat, but it makes our offense even less effective than it already is. I’m tired of watching Drew destroy this team.
I hate to see the guys come out and play with no effort, but it makes it even worse any effort is rendered useless by a poor strategy. There’s nothing worse as a player than giving it your all and still getting destroyed due to the fact that your strategy plays to your weaknesses. Right now, it looks like the Hawks are so intent on running the right play on the offensive end that they actually pass up good shots to try and execute what they think they are supposed to. This not only leads to passive play, but at the same time, it eventually leads to selfish play since guys get sick of watching things not work, so they take it upon themselves to “revive” the team. That’s why JJ feels like he needs to “force the issue”, and sometimes Josh plays out of control trying to do the same thing. It’s annoying and painful to watch. I just hope that one day this team gets a truly worthwhile coach who can get the most out of these guys and develop a system that utilizes their strengths.

By the way, with the way that the post-season has played out so far, we may get the worst-case scenario from management during the offseason. By that, I mean that management may choose to keep the “core” intact and make no major changes, meanwhlie keeping L.D. as our head coach, simply due to the fact that they feel like we’ve improved by winning a single game in the second round (so far).
I can’t root against the Hawks, and as badly as I want Drew fired and changes to be made to the roster, I don’t want the Hawks to have to lose games for it to happen. On the flip side though, under no circumstances do I want the Hawks’ management to just stand still during the offseason and do nothing at all, simply because the Hawks had a little bit of success in the post-season. I just hope that regardless of what happens in the playoffs, management actually does something legitimate to improve this team this offseason, and by legitimate I mean hiring a new coach and making some impactful roster moves (not worthless ones like signing Powell and Etan).

Thats called committed to winning championships. Every Atlanta team owner take notice to what Arthur Blank is willing to do. I love the Braves , but even their owners are more concerned about making money. The Falcons are VERY close to bringing championships home to Atlanta. We will all have something to be proud of soon Atlanta fans! Hang in there! The Hawks are actually really close to getting to that championship level but will never quite reach it with ASG. Correct to an extent, but you need to make OTHER adjustments and not simply get JJ to pound the rock and shoot.
JJ needs to get 25+ shots but not out of him receiving, being double teamed and then forcing shots.
Game 4 should start with 20 sequences in which Teague should get the ball off JJ’s double team and would drive FULL THROTTLE to the paint.
20 STRAIGHT TIMES
Teague must do a Rose impersonation since he is the guy who – in spite of his production – is not being focused by CHI’s D.
Make them pay for it.
If you do this with JJ at the SG, Josh at the SF, Al at PF and Zaza at C, Josh and Zaza can crash the boards and JJ receive kick outs when Teague’s penetration runs into a collapsing defense.
With this we will break the game open.
Either Teague has a 20 point first quarter, getting Noah and Boozer in foul trouble (even if he gets swatted 3 or 4 times) – if the D does not collapse on him, or if they do collapse, JJ will have open looks and get 8 to 9 clean shots out of Teague’s dribble penetration.
With this, CHI would have to make an adjustment and would not be able to double team JJ so strong or would need to leave someone else open.
WE NEED to make them adjust their D on JJ and the only way to get this done is with Teague in super attack mode emulating Rose’s game – REGARDLESS of him being NOT able to get more than .355 shots in.
Rose shoots around .355 in many games which CHI wins because even when he misses lay ups he has guys crashing the boards.
WE NEED constant dribble penetration. I mean CONSTANT.
That would also drive Rose back into the paint and take some wind from him, diminishing his fast break opportunities.
LD is still so used at looking at the Hawks offense with the “no-dribble-penetration and slow-getting-back-on-D Bibby” that he is trying to diminish fast break opportunities the wrong way (by not crashing the offensive boards).
This takes away OUR BEST QUALITIES: Al and Josh became timid offensive rebounders and we need them to be the opposite, we need them to be hungry for the rock on offense OFF JJ, Jamal and Teague’s misses instead of launching jumpers and then running back to protect our basket.

This was the Hawks team I dreaded seeing in the playoffs (Terrible shot selection, Poor perimeter and interior defense, and zero movement on offense). We were beaten in all phases of the game and save for Teague no one else showed up offensively (Al needs to step up, stop passing to Josh who can’t hit a jumper to save his life, and Joe and Jamal to return to form). If we don’t get it together Sunday then this series is over.

Chicago overall isnt as talented as Atlanta’s 5 starters but the Hawks dont know that. It’s pretty simple take Rose out of the game by double teaming him up and rotating your players. They did this over and over again in the paint.
If Rose was open he’d take the shot, which happened alot because off the pick and roll Teague would get blocked off and Rose would go around and as soon as the other guy blocked, he’d roate to the basket causing our defender to rotate with him leaving Rose open or an easy lay-up.
Teague needed some help and didnt none of the other guys come over to challenge him.
In Game#4 Atlanta has got to rotate quicker in other words when the pick happens Atlanta needs to rotate a 3rd guy up the middle covering the guy thats causing the pick and the other two hawks defenders need to block Rose on both sides so that he’ll have to pass it off.
Make the other players on Chicago beat us and not the MVP. Their doing the same thing to JJ sometimes even triple teaming him.
Rebounding- Its a given that most likely Chicago will have more rebounds than us but to get outrebounded by double digits is unacceptable. I see maybe 1 or 2 players from the Hawks trying to get defensive rebounds under the basket.
Chicago has atleast 3 players down there. If Rose scores 20 plus i think we have a chance but scoring 40 is indicitive by how much we got beat by. Pachulia needs to stay out of the game, too slow and cant block but can only foul.
Teague is playing great so i think he should get more playing time. If i was Teague though i’d be right in Roses face the entire game and not play off on him. This will agitate him and hurry him up and may also cause a turnover which he does alot anyways.
If Chicago double teams JJ why doesnt the open guy head toward the basket and get a easy layup? This is what Chicago was doing to us all night in games#2 and #3. We watched Orlando blow us out last year and now Chicago is doing the samething to us that they did.
Orlando was more talented than the Hawks but certainly not Chicago but do the Hawks know that? Without Rose Chicago has no chance and Atlanta better quit standing back on their heels or this will be over very soon.

Josh Smith could be a great player but LD aint gonna make him that. Smith needs someone who will ride him hard. When he goes to the rack the Bulls dont know how to stop him, yet he still takes jump shots. Thats on LD.

I maybe wrong, but I still pick the hawks to win this series. I still feel they will win in six or seven. I said six earilier. The hawks seem to be a better road team, where they have more focus and energy, because of that us against the world mentality. I feel they will win sunday, and maybe loose tuesday, win thursday, and win sunday. I think for them to win you have to keep rose to 25 points or less with 7 assists or less. You have to double team him out top to take the ball out of his hands and make other players make decisive plays to beat you. He is the orchestara of this orchestra. As I have said all along, cut the head off of the snake and watch the rest of the body just wiggle or flail all over the place. Also if you win the rebounding game you win the series.
Joe, Jamal, Josh, Al, etc., when teague is penatrating stop standing around waiting for the ball, cut to the basket, set screens away from the ball side to free up a team mate, do the little things, set hard screens, foul rose when he comes to the basket, stop being passive. Go out Sunday and play with heart, and show that you belong and that you are the better team. If they are playing hard, you play harder. It is just that simple.

Get your shots up, and see what happens.
northclyde i agree, Joe J has to go down guns blazing, like he did in game 1. The major problem I have always had with Joe J is that he is too much of a blend in guy. Games like these when you are down early and it was mangenable only bulls had 6 point lead or so end of first quarter you have to carrry the team on his back. His personality is not that. Atlanta really needs an alpha male type on this team and a banger and rebounder to really go places. I like Teague. HInrich will be expiring contract. Get rid off Marvin if you can. Make a decision who you gonna keep between Josh and Al. I think Al would keep. I think the fans even the most ardent Smith fans have turned on him and I think he would be best elsewhere. Let Jamal go. I have seen enough of his career. Not good defensively hot and cold player that plays streetball.
The biggest thing this team needs is an alpha male player to makes himself accountable and when the game grinds down and says f it I am going to take this team on my back and lead them. Hawks dont have that. If it means getting D Howard or Paul or WIlliams so be it even if it means trading half the team for a player like that. This team is mentally weak and look at the landscape of the NBA that is changing. Lakers might be done after Sunday, Same as Celtics. Younger teams are now coming up like Memphis, okc Heat Bulls.

He who controls the tempo, controls the game (He = D Rose)
He who controls the game, usually wins the game (He = D Rose)
To beat the Bulls, the Hawks must beat the head of the snake (The head = D Rose)
D Rose was so much of a game controller; he took JJ and Jamal out of their offense without even guarding them. He dictated the speed of the game which got the Hawks offense out of sync. Yes, in this game, the best defense is a good offense. But, the Bulls defense was already excellent. So when you add Rose study diet of unstoppable dribble penetration on offense with their excellent defense, the Hawks spent the whole game scrambling to keep up. Neither JJ nor Jamal could find their rhythms. That must change in game 4.
Games 4 adjustments – Rose has now gotten into a comfort zone against Teague, it is time to show him something different. Start Damien in place of Marvin and occasionally switch him to PG on Rose to disrupt his timing. Damien can beast on defense. He has a way of getting under opponents skin with his combative style defense. If Rose tries to bully Damien the way he bullied Teague, Damien could easily put him on his azz or frustrate him. If he uses his quickness and blows by Damien, the help defender should (also) put him on his azz. The bottom line, make him work for his points. NO MORE CHI-TOWN PARTYING IN THE PAINT AT PHILLIPS!! Dribble penetration must stop for the Hawks to have a remote chance of winning the series.
Absolutely a NO-NO: LD must not play into the Bulls hands and leave the shooters to double Rose in Game 4. That is exactly what the Bulls are expecting. Tim Thibodeau was coach of the year for a reason. He will not error the way LD did and show the same look in game 4 as he showed in the previous games.

Jamal needs to shut his mouth about questioning the coach’s decision. He won’t be back on the team anyways next year. I do not see a word about how terrible Josh Smith is in this. Josh could dominate the NBA much like Lebron does because of his size and athleticism but he thinks he is a guard. Joe Johnson continues to make the Hawks front office look like idiots; he has no fire in his game. Johnson never seems to want to be THAT guy on this team, he is not a number one option on any team. Teague explodes out of the gates then the game plan changes all of a sudden and teague rarely gets a shot off. Players and coaches, this was an all around bad effort. Sadly this has been the same type of game we have watched this team play all year.

Reading posters saying that this series is not over. Love the spirit. However, I saw nothing last night to make me think the Hawks have anything left in this series. Al is playing like garbage. blogman,
If you think JJ is overated, put him on the Bulls team and see how he takes his game to another level. The problem for us is given JJ’s laid back nonchalant attitude, he doesnt have what it takes to be Batman. but he is a very good Robin. The Hawks just dont have enough good players or a good enough HC.
northcyde,
I agree. We need to give Rose the Jordan treatment that the Bulls gave to JJ and Jamal. Everytime those guys caught the ball, even if it was at mid court, they ran 2 defenders at them and forced them to give up the ball.
Hawks need better role players. Do we have a shooter (like Korver or Bogans)? Do we have an energy guy who puts everything into rebounding (Noah)? What about a guy designated for defense?
Hubie Brown said a good coach is able to get his best players high percentage shots in high percentage areas (based on the player’s regular season statistics). But our coach doesnt know how to do that.
All we know how to do is pass the ball around until we get a good shot. If jumpers fall, we look good. If they dont, we look really bad.

For the 1st time since Horford got here, i was happy when LD benched him in the 1st half. Dude is offering NOTHING!! There was a sequence where DRose crossed JT0 and bullied his way through the middle for the 2-handed dunk. In this sequence you can see clearly that Horford only threw a hand to the ball instead of blocking the shoot or giving a hard foul.
I could live with him not being an offensive force, but in defense?! it’s unacceptable!! he offers no resistance at the rim, does not help on defense, watch everybody grab rebounds around him, gets pushed away at will by Noah and Gibson, his man is grabbing offensive rebounds over his head. The only thing that is left, and i would not be surprised if that happens, is that DRose gives him a 2-handed facial!!
All-Star?? hell no!! Soft-Gal? definitely!!

One man cannot stop D.Rose…
It takes team defense. You can’t throw a 2nd year PG out there whose played very little all season and toss him in front of the league’s MVP and expect him to lock the dude down.
Be real.

Wabe..DITTO… Rose is the MVP of the league! NOBODY stopped him. Yet, unlike the championship Bulls, there is no Scottie Pippen on this team. If you cut off the head the tail will follow! Let D. Rose take 30 shots, but if you stop his team mates, then you have something. You have to grab those rebounds! If the Hawks win the rebounding war, they win the series. Rebounding is a sense of hustle and pride. Even Teague has to grab at least 6 boards because when Rose blows by him, he has to follow and be prepared to rebound since Al or Josh is helping on D.
Again we can win this series. We can!

MC, like another blog mention JJ forcing the issue…may be a bad thing…especially if JJ means going quicker before the double team sets up…But if he holds that ball…WE DEAD.
I think this series could turn on a dime…if we unleash our Bigs…GO BIG AND STAY BIG…THE REST OF THE SERIES…Al has always struggle against Bigs with length.
Let Collins and Zaza dish out some punishment…and take some charges…and kick some asssss…Yeah, they can kind of flop sometimes…but it work. heh heh
Bring Marvin of the bench…so he can regain his aggression…what little he has.lol
I SAID IT ONCE…I WILL SAY IT AGAIN…the 64 million dollar question is…WILL THE HAWKS CONTINUE TO FIGHT!!
If the Hawks continue to fight…than the series is only 2-1 like Josh said…However, if the Hawks come out Sunday and lay TF down…this series is over.
COME ON LD…TiB…don done his thang…lets see what you got…talk is cheap.
LET’S GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE ADJUSTMENT FOR THE HAWKS IS A PRETTY SIMPLE ONE.. YOU NOTICE THAT EVERYTIME JOE AND JAMAL COME OFF A PICK AND ROLL THAT THEY TRAP AND FORCE THEM TO GIVE UP THE BASKETBALL? THATS EXACTLY WHAT THE HAWKS NEED TO DO TO CHICAGO!
LD- TRAP D ROSE IN PICK AND ROLL SITUATIONS AND MAKE SOMEONE ELSE BEAT YOU. THEY DONT HAVE ANYBODY WHO CAN CREATE THEIR OWN SHOTS EXCEPT FOR D ROSE… MAKE SURE YOUR ROTATIONS ARE SOLID
AL HORFORD- FOR CRYING OUTLOUD MOVE YOUR DAMN FEET ON DEFENSE WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU A PERSONAL ESCORT TO THE BASKET, YOU PLAY LIKE YOU START THE GAME WITH FIVE FOULS! YOU HAVE SIX FOULS WAKE THE **** UP AND WALL OFF THE LANE
J-BRICK AT SOME POINT GET IT THRU YOUR HEAD THAT YOU GOT TO THE LEAGUE BY BEING A HUSTLE GUY, REBOUNDING AND BLOCKING SHOTS IS YOUR THING. YOUR A DUNK CONTEST WINNER DAMMIT GO DUNK ON SOMEBODY.. THIS ISNT NBA2K11 “YOU CANT SHOOT” HELLO
JOE JOHNSON- WITH ALL THAT MONEY BUY YOU A TICKET TO THE LAND OF OZ SEEK OUT THE WIZARD AND FIND SOME COURAGE AND A HEART… WHY DOES THE BASKETBALL STOP MOVING EVERYTIME YOU GET IT? AND DAMMIT GO HARD TO THE BASKET YOUR TO DAMN BIG TO BE AVOIDING CONTACT AND SHOOTER FLOATERS AND ****. THATS FOR SMALLER GUYS WHO CANT TAKE THE POUNDING, MAYBE…JUST MAYBE IF YOU ATTACK THE BASKET INSTEAD OF SETTLING FOR THE STEP BACK 20FT FADEAWAY JUMPER YOU WILL GET YOUR ASS TO THE FT LINE MORE…
MARVIN- GO PURCHASE A JUMP-ROPE AND START DOING SOME COORDINATION DRILLS, YOUR SO WEAK IT MAKES NO SENSE… YOU COULDNT SCORE AGAINST MY GRANDMOTHER (rip) AND SHE BEEN DEAD FOR 18 YEARS
JAMAL- STOP FORCING 3POINTERS TRYING TO GET FOULED.GO TO THE CUP NOBODY CAN STOP YOU IF YOU MAKE UP YOUR MIND
J TEAGUE- MAN I AM PROUD OF YOU FOR DEALING WITH WOODY AND LD’S BS AND LETTING YOUR GAME DO THE TALKING WHEN YOU GET YOUR OPPOURTUNITY TO SHINE… KEEP ATTACKING THE BASKET AND WORK ON THAT JUMPER IN THE OFF SEASON

It was embarrasing to hear the MVP chants for Rose in Atlanta’s home court. I mean, where is this city’s pride. So mouch criticism for this team but apparently we have the team we deserve. Hell, I now I can even empathize with JJ and his comments about the fans during last year’s playoffs. To let the other tema’s fanns take over like that…And is not like Chicago is across the border. Gutless, suprerficial, trendy, fair wheather fans. Don’t criticize these players unless/untill you grow some heart and guts. And superiorblogman: Are you serious about that trade? I now live in Milwaukee and follow the Bucks closely and you would be getting what people critisize the most about the Hawks: a player with no heart (Bogut) who also happens to be extremely prone to injuries, and an offenssive black hole (ince the ball reaches Maggette’s hands you will never see it again).
Shame on you Atlanta sports fans. Shame on you.

how bout a marvin for hawes trade, we can take another salary and give up a 2nd rounder, id really enjoy seeing the hawks make a trade for that legite 7foot center, hawes is young and can be a good offensive big man for us.
as for our lack of a homecourt, how r fans supposed to give their time/energy/money to a team that gets blown out in the playoffs and gives up. its not like atlanta has bad fans, when u go to a braves or falcons game it is all home team fans because they work hard and give it all and we can see that and appreciate it. the hawks need to make some trades in the offseason and i like LD but maybe a coach with more vigor and experience can instill a new motor in our hawks and bring in more hawks fans.

Think any Hawk would play hurt like Rondo did tonight? That is a big NO.
Rose continues his “playing for my mama” beat down tomorrow on Atlanta.

how about no for waiting for soft big man Spencer Hawes NEXT YEAR and put Jason Collins in for Williams right now and see how that works?
I hate how Hawks fans just roll over. Just like this small ball unit.
Hello, LD yeah every team playing small is out of the playoffs. Phoenix Suns-out, Golden State-out, 76ers- out (Spencer Hawes is incapable of playing center, he’s a worse version of Toronto’s Bargnani).
Can we focus on a lineup that rebounds. How do you make no adjustments on rebounding? You can’t put 5 shooters in and expect some sort of balance. I mean Teague, Crawford AND JJ? That’s like me putting 3 Rondo’s in the game.
Luol Deng’s 7′0 wingspan can contain Joe and Joe’s 6′9 wingspan without fouling. 2 Free throw attempts is not ideal Larry.
Go big or go home! No rebounds no Rings!
