Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 86, Hawks 73

Chicago–The Hawks couldn’t keep Chicago off the boards or D-Rose away from the basket. They took bad shots and also missed 10 attempts within five feet of the basket. No one aside from Teague or J.J. could score.

  • “And still, with four minutes left, it was a six-point game,” Jamal said. “We were right there.”
  • And then on the next four possessions the Hawks reverted to the form they showed for most of the game: J.J. threw the ball away, J.J. missed a challenged iso jumper, Josh’s 3-point attempt rimmed out and Al missed an open 20-footer.
  • One way to view this game is the Hawks had a chance to win despite a poor offensive game and getting pounded on the boards. But they also have to lament the possessions they wasted by taking poor shots and committing careless turnovers and the extra possessions the Bulls got by picking off scraps around the basket.
  • The Hawks never really had a sustained stretch of good play. “We will take the split,” Joe said. “We wanted to come down here and get two but we got one, so we will take it. Now everything is in our favor. We have got to go home and take care of homecourt.”
  • Marvin started 1 for 6 from the field but at least he stopped shooting and got some rebounds. Al’s attempts to bang his way to baskets against Noah weren’t pretty but he facilitated the offense with six assists and had 14 of Atlanta’s 39 defensive rebounds.
  • Josh, on the other hand, didn’t offer much beyond that burst of defense and dunks in the third quarter after he’d angrily ripped off his headband.
  • “I was [ticked] off at myself,” he said “I understand what I need to do to be more effective with this ballclub, especially at the offensive end. I think Game 3 will be a different look for me.”
  • And why was he angry with himself? “Turnovers, a couple of unforced errors on my part, maybe a couple of untimely shots. Just a couple–maybe one or two. It is just frustrating because I know I can give this team a little bit more on the offensive end. Right now I am not doing my part on that end. I know I have got to do more and be efficient like I’ve been all season.”
  • Josh was 0 for 6 from beyond 15 feet, same as in Game 2. Unlike in the opener, he didn’t mitigate that with consistently good work on the boards or on D.
  • Smoove channeled his emotions into a positive during that stretch with the blocked shots (helped by Boozer’s insistence on trying to shoot finesse baskets over him). But Josh’s lack of focus appeared to passive work on the boards and some loose turnovers.
  • “That is something that he has to figure out as a player,” Al said. “If he does, that would show growth. I feel like he’s been growing every year but when he gets that he is going to be on a good position.”
  • When is Smoove at his best for the Hawks? “Running on the break, slashing to the basket, getting blocked shots and when it calls for an open shot, he takes it,” Al said. “When he plays like that, plays poised like that, I think that’s when he’s at his best.”
  • The Bulls, like the Magic in the first round, realized that it’s not enough to just induce Joe and Jamal into long Js. You also have to make them give up the ball or chase them off those shots, too, and so the Bulls turned up the pressure.
  • The results were similar: less ball movement, more contested shots. Joe and Jamal were 4 of 15 from beyond 15 feet. “They made a conscious effort to not let Joe and Jamal beat them,” Josh said. “As teammates we have to do a better job when we catch the basketball so it can make them second-guess if they are going to double them.”
  • “The ball really didn’t move,” Joe said. “We had a lot of tough shots and contested shots. That hurt us. Offensively we got in a rut. Everybody wanted to score; everybody was thirsty. That killed us a team.”
  • There were times when Teague held the ball at the top of the key while trying to feed a teammate on the wing or in the post. “It’s a lot of responsibility on my part to make sure guys get touches in spots where they can be effective,” Teague said. “Tonight they turned up the intensity and made it hard for us.”
  • With the way Teague’s playing, the Hawks might be better off letting him loose instead of slowing things down so he can look for others.
  • “I was just trying to win,” Teague said. “The opportunity comes, I have to be aggressive just so they respect me on the floor.”
  • “I think with Teague playing it kind of throws them off because they really haven’t seen him play much,” J.J. said. “I think it’s hard for them to gear up, especially the first two games.”
  • “I thought he played a brilliant game tonight,” L.D. said.
  • Teague again led the effort to prevent D-Rose from taking over. “I think we did a pretty good job,” Teague said. “He made 10 of 27 shots. I guess we will take that.”
  • Teague is doing a really nice job of making D-Rose work at both ends. But either Rose’s ankle isn’t right or he just doesn’t have it in him to be aggressive because he has so many passive moments.
  • The Hawks had Jamal on Rose and Teague on Korver in the fourth quarter. It sort of worked because Rose wasn’t really looking to go to the basket and Teague makes up for the size disadvantage by staying in Korver’s chest. “You have to crowd and get into him,” Teague said. “He’s a lights out shooter and when he gets his feet set he has a quick release.”
  • Zaza played just eight minutes. Even though he seemed a bit slugging early, I think more Zaza and less Josh might have been in order since the Hawks were getting outmuscled at the basket.
  • More Damien and less Marvin might have been a good thing, too.

I am finally hopping aboard the J Smoove is killing us bandwagon. Just bad on offense due to dumb decisions. Zaza played poorly in limited minutes. LD should never sub Crawford for Teague. Horford played very tentative on offense, Jamal had a off-night, Joe dribbled too much and we STILL had a chance to win in the end! I like our chances in Atlanta.

The Hawks need to take note of what the Mavericks just managed to do in their series vs. the defending champs. The Mavericks just pretty much wrapped up that series (IMO) before even playing a game at home. I know it’s foolish to count the defending champs out at any point, but truthfully, down 2-0 going to Dallas? All Dallas has to do is win one of those two games at home and that series is theirs to lose.

Now, back to the Hawks. The Hawks have played both game one’s in both series incredibly efficient and poised. However, in both game 2’s, the Hawks seem to play a bit ‘dumber’ and less poised. They’ve had opportunities now twice to go up 2-0 on their opponent, but they don’t play at the level necessary to seize control of the series. Now the Hawks don’t find themselves in a bad spot. They got the split and are headed back home for two games and have homecourt advantage. But, it’d be nice to see the Hawks take control when the opportunities present themselves rather than making it difficult for themselves.

BTW, all Jeff Teague haters, where ya at?

Superiorblogman,

A quality point guard, unless he has tremendous scoring ability like a Kevin Johnson or an Isiah Thomas, should be a facilitator first and foremost. JT at this point does not have that type of scoring ability. In actuality, his jump shot (perimeter game) is inconsistent and very suspect. Even though he hit a three point shot tonite, he also shot an airball at the top of the key in first half. As I stated in a previous blog, so goes Jamal, Joe and Al (from an offensive standpoint), so goes the Hawks. Just like Game 1 on Monday in Chicago, Joe and Jamal had it going offensively. The two combined, I believe, for 56 points. In Game 1 @ Orlando, Joe and Jamal combined for 48 points. In those two games, the Hawks won. I can go on and on. I am not taking anything away from Teague. I thought Teague should have played more in the regular season all along. I’m just providing my perspective of the two, Teague and Crawford, while they are on the court together. Jamal has put his (offensive) imprint on a lot of regular season and several playoff games in which the Hawks have won. Teague played well in Game 2 tonite but the Hawks still lost. Bottom line, Jamal has won quite a few meaningful games for the Hawks while Teague, in his limited opportunity, has not. It’s very simple. If Joe and Jamal with the help of Al have it going offensively, this usually spells success and a victory for the Hawks. You already know this.

My rant before I go off to try and sleep:

I stated before this series started that the Hawks should not be starting all these IFs. I stated that Teague, because of no fault of his own was a if, but a if I thought could get it done, but Marvin and Josh were both IF’s that I could not really deal with anymore. Especially, not in tandem.

The sickening thing is I was correct and those who agreed were correct. Teague is our least worry. He seemed like a big IF going into this series but he is absolutely playing better than 2 IFs we have had for 5+ years now. Marvin and Josh are just becoming unacceptable because it(there lack of improvement and way too often hurtful play) is piling up way too much.

Lastly, Marvin is a lost cause as a starter. If you put him on the bench and play him at the 3 and 4 coming off the bench you can maximize his limited potential. While, I am starting to think Josh does not care about his teammates, legacy, or fans because he could be a Hall of Famer if he thought like Dennis Rodman or Ben Wallace and that starts with his body. Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace were both fitness fanatics but look at what Josh looks like now compared to what he looked like 5 to 7 years ago. Seriously, Josh should be ashamed of himself for disrespecting himself, his legacy, his fans, and teammates like this. If he cared to do everything legally possible on the court to rebound and defend all game he could be a Hall of Famer and that’s the bottomline. Notice I never mentioned a stupid jump shot or even finish around the rim, which he is naturally better at finishing than Rodman and Wallace.

Finally, LD is not the coach Josh needs and Sund is not the GM. I can remember LD telling Josh that he wanted him to lose 15 pounds after he got the job and look at Josh. He came to camp once again doing what he wanted to do which is not what was asked of him as a teammate.

“I am finally hopping aboard the J Smoove is killing us bandwagon”

Hi there welcome. Please try to find a place and take your seat as we are approaching a steep downhill. If you are unable to find a seat, then we suggest hanging on to one of the handrails.

Smoove just needs the right attitude change. He needs the right coach. He needs a TRUE “player coach” to get on his ass. As well as a real head coach to get on his ass at the same time. He thinks this is his sandbox and he can take all the plastic shovels he wants. Well it’s not. It’s Larry Drews sandbox and if Larry Drew wants to step on Smooves sand castle then he has every right to do so and Smoove has to respect authority.

Overall I think as a team we did well and we never gave up. If we could of had a good game from Jamal, Al, And Smith we could have taken another one in Chicago. I’d rather ahve a slumping Jamal take perimeter shots then Smoove.

Also let me go ahead and say that I’m jumping onto that Teague bandwagon myself. I’m fully convinced of this kid. He is a rotational player and if next season he does’nt average atleast 20-25 mins a game, I will bepissed. I’m still split on wheter I’d call him a starter. I think after he gets consistent minutes in a regular season, then we can all safely assume where he’d be best at.

Offseason: Trade Smoove

Why hasn’t anybody said anything about LD’s bizarre move? He switched the bigs’ matchups – Horford on Boozer and Smoove on Noah. In the first game, our bigs were awesome defensively and on the boards. Al gives up some height but he knows Noah’s game from practicing against him at FLA. After things worked perfectly in Game 1, LD decides to switch, and we get destroyed on the boards in Game 2. He was talking about getting Al’s length against Boozer, but Boozer didn’t hurt us in Game 1.

WHY, LD, WHY?!?!?!?!?!?

Bulls are kinda due to break out. They’ve been pretty quiet so far. Game 3 is a monster game for the Hawks. If the Hawks take it, maybe the game would be enough to stiffen their backbone and lead to a series win. If the Bulls get it, the Hawks just might go into full-blown Headcase Mode. Ain’t no reason to trust these Hawks until they do the job. Maybe they will this time.

Josh was flat out horrible and Marvin ineffective. JT was huge and I doubt that he should be taken off Rose at any point. Running JC on Rose isnt a good option. I know Korver can go off but it’s Rose who needs to be slowed/stopped and Teague has been doing that to an extent. And why did JT sit for so long in the first and second qtr? This is where the Bulls got their first run on.

Hawks should come out strong in ATL and take a 3-1 lead. They need to just not be lazy and fal into ISO mode. They truly are their own worst enemy!!!!

First, mad props for Jeff Teague. He scored 21 points and has had less than 3 turnovers in two games against the reigning MVP of the league after only playing 9 minutes in the playoffs before this series. He has seized his opportunity and taken advantage of it.

Everyone from the coach in the sideline interviews, to the announcers in each series to Kenny and Charles at half time and breaks are talking about Smooves shot selection and play. This year I believed that Josh had been trying to make a case for playing in the small forward position and also to expand his game to include jump shots beyond 10 feet, while ATL looks for a center. What he needs to concentrate on is ‘right now”. Right now, his team mates need him inside.

We fumbled way to many balls away in this game and everyone, Zaza included, seemed to have butterfingers. The good thing is we are in a great position to win this game and we have played well enough not to get blown out. I still have great hopes of us getting out of this round but, we can not play another game like that one where we have butterfingers and so many ill advised shots. GO HAWKS!!!!!

We CANNOT let Josh play this many minutes. He is destroying this team. We need a BIG like ZaZa getting MORE MINUTES

We need DAMIEN in the game to help be physical with Deng and cut his rebounding down

For those of you complaining about Al’s offense (or lack there of) in this series so far, why don’t you take a look at the opportunities that he is getting so far.

The Hawks have basically run no plays at all for Horford on the offensive end. Even if Drew has recommended it at times, the team has failed to execute those plays at all. The majority of Horford’s attempts so far have been heaves at the basket late in the shot clock as a result of a broken play. He has had very few spot-up jumpers or pick-and-pop jumpers so far (which he is very effective with), and as far as post-ups, our guards are terrible at making proper entry passes at the correct time. Horford is having to post-up way in the mid-post area due to failure of the ball-handler to enter the ball earlier, which makes it much easier for a double-team to come over before he gets anything going. What does this lead to? Either a pass out of the double-team (which some of you idiots would call being “passive”) or a forced (and likely missed) jump hook from too far from the basket.

If you go back and look at the tape, Horford has had very few quality looks, and it’s not because he hasn’t been open, it’s because our offense has failed to utilize him properly. The offense so far has revolved heavily around Joe and Jamal, which is fine when they have it going, but I don’t think they are going to have it going for an entire series (as tonight’s game showed). Al has basically been used to set screens on the offensive end. That’s a combination of poor coaching and poor execution at work, but mainly poor coaching. Unless Al is garbage buckets, there’s not much he can do out there without receiving the ball in good situation/locations for what he considers to be “high percentage” shots. Horford has the ability to drive the ball as well, but since he typically only receives the ball in the high post area to set up the play, he’s usually thinking pass-first and is hesitant to drive to basket unless no other viable options exist. So, don’t expect him to drive often. For some reason, Horford has been given a very limited role in the offense in these playoffs. He’s basically been used as if he’s Joe Smith (the current Joe Smith) out there.

I’m not saying that Horford shouldn’t be more aggressive out there, but there’s a fine line between playing aggressively on the offensive end and playing out of control and trying to do too much on the offensive end (see Josh Smith). Horford should look to score more often, but having said that, there’s only so much a big man can do on the offensive end when he doesn’t have the ball. If the coaching staff wants Horford to be more of a factor on the offense end and actually wants to win this series, they should try to get him more involved by running some actual plays for him out there.

With Teague playing point gaurd, there’s an even smaller likelihood of him getting the ball since Teague is new to this and will be deferring to Joe and Jamal more than anyone else on the team. It’s not Teague’s fault, he just doesn’t have the experience yet, and you can’t expect him to instantly know how to run the offense perfectly and get every player going, meanwhile getting himself going and defending the MVP. A lot of the problem is on the coaching staff and their insistence on riding Joe and Jamal way too much. Running everything through Joe and Jamal is only using a portion of the team’s ability and potential. it’s predictable and too easy to defend. I know Woody left his imprint on L.D., but damn, let’s not take this too far. I thought the coaching staff would know by now what works and what doesn’t. If Joe and Jamal and moving well without the ball and making their decisions quickly, you can run most of the offense through them, but once the defense keys in on them and they start to make slow, passive decisions, you have to look elsewhere and start running things for other guys. You can’t make it that easy on the opposing defense where they know that only two guys are going to shoot the ball.

It’s no surprise that the Hawks lost tonight when we had Ben Wallace out there trying to be Reggie Miller. What’s next for Josh? Will he try to be Magic Johnson, Ray Allen, or Chris Mullin in game 3? Let’s hope that the answer is none of the above. There’s no room for stupidity on the court in playoff basketball. If I were the coach of the Hawks, I would have benched Josh for the entire second half after his performance in the first half.

We should be fortunate to know that the players bought into LD’s wisdom for the most of eight quarters, more than you can say about Thib’s Bulls. Coming back home will do one of three things. I’m still not sold on the Mavericks. They had a 2-0 lead against Miami and ended up losing 4 straight in the NBA finals a few years ago (although this time they are up 2-0 going back to Dallas). Plus they just blew a 15 point second half lead against Portland.

The key is game 3. If Lakers win game 3, then the Mavs will start to panic, and doubt will set in, which will give the Lakers a good chance to win game 4 too. But if the Mavs win game 3, then I think they win the series.

The Hawks need to make an adjustment in order to limit Josh Smith’s touches outside the paint. They need to move Smoove down low to play the five on offense and allow Al Horford to play the four. Al is the better shooter and JSmoove has the length and agility to out-rebound Chicago’s bigs (the Bulls don’t have great size inside).

northcyde,

You gave LD a C+ rating? I would give him a D-. All year, he has been unable to get the team to change their game when the jumpers are not falling, and we saw it again last night.

All year long, he has not held Josh accountable for his turrible shot selection, and we saw it again last night.

All year long, his substitution patters have been baffling, and we saw it again last night. With Al, Josh and Marvin all struggling, they combined to play over 100 minutes, while ZaZa and Damien combined to play less than 20.

Before the game, LD took the blame for not having his team ready to play game 2 against Orlando. I wonder if he will take the blame for last night’s game too.

It was not a bad pick

Marvin had a bad night shooting, and on this blog, will get blasted as usual but this game was lost for 3 reasons
1.Larry Drew..If the Hawks continue to not play a center, we will lose..After watching JT last night, i dislike him even more…i would love to see our core with a good coach..
2. this team goes as far as Jamal will take us, he had a bad night, and Joe Max was just average..We can’t expect 2 dominating games in a row from the 120 mill man..
3. once again JOSH SMITH, I have given up on him, the kid will never get it, Marvin is 20x better than Josh even on a bad shooting night…So Drew how about this..
ZAZA,AL,Marvin,JJ, JT do this and we win in 5..Marvin will not jack up bad shots and turn the ball over, he plays solid D, and he hits the boards…

Josh Smith needs to go. I’m done with him. He is a terrible player. He can say all he wants about being angry with himself and all the other bullsh#t. He never changes. We’ll still see the same bad shots, halfa$$ed effort, lazy turnovers, and pouting face. He needs to not play for the Hawks anymore. He just won’t ever “get it”. He won’t. I’m just done with him. All Star players step up their games in the playoffs. Joe has on occasion stepped up his game but more importantly has not played below his regular season level. Jamal has for the most part stepped up his game. Smoove and Al are both playing worse than they did in the regular season. They need to step up.

BYRDDAWG,

We played pretty bad basketball last night, but were STILL in the game.

I cannot believe ZaZa is not getting minutes. He had a bad first half – okay, everyone has a bad half (ask the entire starting lineup minus Teague and maybe Joe).

WHY is Josh guarding Noah? Noah is WAY bigger than him and LONGER and is getting ALL THE REBOUNDS.

Once we make a rebounding adjustment, we will win this series. If not, we will lose a series to an inferior team.

We are better than this team. Teague had 21 f’ing points and we lost. Horford needs to get it together

It was not a bad pick,

Marvin had an EASY 3 on 1 fast break last night. Instead of even looking for trailing teammates, he took some awkward layup that had no chance of going in (very similar to LBJ’s miss against PHI in game 4). Marvin is garbage, but doesn’t annoy us that much BECAUSE WE DON’T EXPECT ANYTHING FROM Him.

@It was not a bad pick…..Are you Marvin Williams? Josh had a horrible game and was still more effective than Marvin. To say Marvin is 20x better than Smoove is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on an AJC blog, seriously. Marvin is lazy and has more WTF are you doing moments than good moments. Marvin is maybe the 13th-15th best player every night. He is a waste of money, I’m sure I speak for most Hawks fan, “End the Marvin experiment.” The guy is a bum and everytime I go to Hawks games I let him know how I feel. He is a NBDL player tops, the Hawks just don’t want to admit they were wrong because they wasted a #2 pick on him. Damien has more value than Marvin, at least he can play defense. Noah got boards yesterday because Smoove wasn’t boxing out, not because he had some major size advantage. It’s fair to say that the size advantage does occasionally work in Noah’s favor, but I didn’t feel like that was the main reason for Noah dominating the boards last night.

All-star Al is losing credibility. His playoff performance isn’t matching his credentials. His stats of 3-12 (FG), 14 RB for 6 points would be acceptable for Josh Smith or Zaza, but not for All-star Al. His previous performance in Game 1 wasn’t much better; 4-7 (FG), 13 RB for 9 points. The Emerging adjectives to describe his game are limited, soft and timid.

Since his first all-star appearance was by default and second was due to limited EC center talent, it raises the question: Is he overrated as a fools-gold all-star? Or perhaps this is just temporary playoff-jitters and his underachieving game will improve.

Ld said in an post game interview “Teague played well, he did not have a turnover, that is the first thing I look at.” At the halftime interview he said “Poor shots are just as bad as turnovers.” Now I’m no genius but that would give Josh at least 10 turnovers for the game. The funny thing is it’s not Smith’s fault, so for all you fans talking about J Smooves B-ball acumen and not LD’s coaching, you are contradicting yourselves. LD has held Jeff all year to the standard of perfect play, not anyone else on the team. As a result we traded away a player 8 years younger and 9 mill cheaper than the player we won’t be able to afford at the end of the year.(and a 1st rd pick next year) And now people are actually saying blow up the team. NO! Burn up LD’s contract. If you can honestly say that Jeff did not actually break even last night with the league MVP you don’t know B-ball. He had 4 less pts on 13 less shots and 8 less turnovers. He had the same amount of blks and 3 more steals all of which he got from the MVP. How can you be a hawks fan and stand for that? FIRELD PLEASE!

The next play down joe went one on one against deng and got ripped and then on the next possesion Joe threw the ball out of bounds. LD should have kept the ball in Jeff’s hands and spotted his shooters up. It was coaching that lost this game and it was that same coaching that kept Jeff Teague on the bench all year. A darn shame. Stop playing like a little b-tch with no heart and a retard level basketball IQ. I am so tired of JOSH SMITH. He never makes even the simplest changes to his game that could help our team so much.
Can you think of any other player in the NBA who has:
-A well below average jumpshot
-His team’s fans booing every single time he shoots a jumper
-Opposing fans cheering every single time he shoots a jumper
-His coach constantly telling his team that their problem is shot selection
-Opposing coaches telling their team to leave him open for jumpers (I am 90% sure that this actually happens)
and STILL CAN’T STOP SHOOTING JUMPERS. It’s this simple Josh- stop shooting all jumpers, and drive hard to the basket like the athletic freak that you are. Unless you are wide open for a jumper from less than 10ft, drive or pass (not one of those stupid ass 100mph 50% chance of turnover passes, a simple two handed chess pass to your point guard after he comes over to you).

Play defense, rebound, and stop gambling for steals because the only sportscenter top 10’s you’ve been making lately are when players like Boozer are taking your manhood on national TV and dunking the hell all over it.

There were several times when I would’ve subbed Zaza for Josh. Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking that. JJ was clearly tired at the end of the 4th quarter. From MC’s pregame blog;

Someone asked L.D. during the Orlando series if he calls post-ups for Smoove. he smiled and said: “yeah, but somehow he ends up floating out to the 3-point line anyway.”.

And what does LD do when Josh does what he does? Nothing.

Josh only took 7 three pointers last year when Woody was here. Sekou is on record saying that Woody was hard on these guys, and they responded during the regular season (although they quit in the playoffs). LD needs to send a message to Josh, but Uncle Larry doesnt want to be too hard on his kamikaze nephew.

Not to take anything away from the Bulls defense, but that is a result of sloppy play. The Hawks only had 12 turnovers. Only way to explain that is BAD SHOT SELECTION!!! Marvin didn’t have a great night last night, but neither did Josh or Al.
Our entire frontcourt folded on both ends. We’ll never win like that.
And Josh shot like ish in Game 1 (3 for 11).
Some things I’ve noticed:
-Josh is putting way too much arch on his jump shot. He wasn’t shooting that high before, but now he has extra arch on every shot. I don’t know why he changed his shot in the middle of the playoffs, but he picked a bad time.
-Al is hesitant with his jumpshot now. You can tell he thinks about it in the last 2 games. If he goes back to just rising up and knocking it down, I bet money he’ll be Automatic Al again.
-Marvin just has good nights and bad nights. I think he’s shooting the same, but sometimes they go in, and sometimes they don’t for that guy. This is what we have with this guy. Simple and plain (although what we have isn’t worth 8 million/yr). But at least he stopped taking jumpers and crashed the boards after a few misses (although they missed lay-up made me die a little inside).

As I mentioned in an earlier blog, the Hawks had about 10 turnovers by half-time in last nights game with Bulls. The Hawks were allowing the Bulls a bunch of second-chance points instead of crashing the glass and keeping the pesky Bulls off the glass. JEFF TEAGUE HAD ONLY ONE TURNOVER ALL NIGHT LONG. THE BALL SHOULD BE IN TEAGUES HANDS MORE AND THIS WILL CUT DOWN ON THE MANY TURNOVERS THE HAWKS ARE COMMITTING. EVERYBODY KEPT COUGHING UP THE BASKETBALL AND TURNING IT OVER, EITHER DUMPING THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS OR LETTING LOOSE BALLS SLIP OUT OF THEIR HANDS. JEFF TEAGUE IS THE MAJOR ANSWER TO THE HAWKS PROBLEMS. Look folks, just because Mike Woodsen and Larry Drew have revised to give Teague his playing time, WOODSEN WAS FIRED and if Larry Drew continues to cheat Teague out of his deserved playing time, then DREW WILL BE FIRED AS SOON AS THE HAWKS GET CRUSHED BY THE BULLS AND LOSE THIS SERIES.

Finally, I can post! I must have been on “time out” for criticizing Teague! (j/k … maybe)

I really think Teague’s one weakness is his play-making ability. He still doesn’t have the ability to make fairly routine passes. (And I don’t think it is a matter of decision making. That is, I don’t think it is a matter of him not attempting to make the passes he should. Rather, I think he knows that he cannot make the pass, so many times he doesn’t. And if he CANNOT, he SHOULD NOT. So, it’s not decision making. It’s ability. And if I am wrong about his ability, well, then it is decision making, but I don’t think this is the case for multiple reasons.)

But with that duly noted, otherwise Teague is looking really good. I really like the way he attacks the offense, and he is playing decent defense on one of the league’s hardest-to-guard players.

GO TEAGUE!
GO HAWKS!!!

But what has been going on with Al? I know he is rebounding. That is good. I know he is facilitating, too. That is also good. But …

But he has been really timid when it comes to taking his bread & butter mid-range jumper. He has been passing up a lot of decent looks, and when he does take the shot, he is not shooting at nearly the same efficiency as he did during the regular season.

When Josh comes out of the game, the Hawks lose a lot of D.

When Josh is in the game, a few more bad offensive possessions are all but guaranteed.

A lose-lose? A bit of a wash? I don’t know. Even when Josh is a bit off offensively, I still prefer to see him on the court than off (though, I do think LD needs to be a little quicker to “send Josh a message” when he creates bad possessions on the offensive end).

The Hawks should be scoring at least 110 points per game. I figured this out last night as I was watching the BULLS CRUSH THE HAWKS. The Hawks should get the scoring from this grid every night:
Joe Johnscon: 25 POINTS 7 REBOUNDS
Jamal Crawford: 25 POINTS 5 REBOUNDS
AL HORFORD 15 POINTS 10 REBOUNDS
JOSH SMITH 15 POINTS 10 REBOUNDS
MARVIN WILLIAMS 10 POINTS 5 REBOUNDS
ZSA ZSA 10 POINTS 8 REBOUNDS
HINRICH 10 POINTS
TEAGUE 10 POINTS
ADD IT UP AND IT COMES OUT TO 120 POINTS AND 40 REBOUNDS PER NIGHT. THIS IS THE SCORING GRID THAT THE HAWKS SHOULD BE EXECUTING TO PERFECTION.

I respect you view but if you look at our offense Jeff does not get a chance to really make plays. Look no further than the fourth qtr after he hit that jumper. Joe went 1 on 1 and got stripped. Next time down Joe 1 on 1 and threw ball out of bounds. Next play dwn Jamal 1 on 1 kick out to Josh for 3.(He missed) The play before all that happened Joe set a pick for Teague, out of respect for his speed offf the edge they trapped and he passed to Joe wid open 3 (He hit). Joe has lead us in assist for the last 6 years because he is the primary ball handler even with Hinrich here. Guess who is 2nd Josh. WHY! Because of this stupid offence that does not call for the point to be a playmaker but a spot up shooters. The only problem is our playmakers can’t make plays. FIRELD NOW!

J from the A, bullsh#t. The Hawks do not lose a lot of anything when Josh comes out of the game. Go back and watch Game 1 of this Bulls series, for instance. All the big runs (ALL OF THEM) come with Josh on the bench.

I swear….the Josh Smith blinders some of you wear is getting old. The guy is not a good player. He isn’t. He’s been different levels of awful for nearly the entire season. Throw in the fact that he is uncoachable and you have a player that needs to go.

J from the A

@Fireld!:

Your point about the design of the Hawks offense is duly noted (and accurate). But I am not trying to compare number of assists or anything like that. Even within the Hawks offense, it is often enough that the PG has to pass the ball, whether it is on the break or into Al or Josh or Joe or Marvin in the post. (I know the Hawks don’t run a ton of post-ups, but they definitely run a small handful every game.) I am sure there is no denying this.

Teague missed several passes on fast breaks that if he would have made (at the right time), should have led to easy transition baskets. There were at least 2 cases in the first quarter when this happened, and in both cases, it resulted in no baskets. There were at least 2 other times in the second half when this happened, resulting in much more difficult shots than were necessary. Throughout the season (and a little bit in these playoffs), he has had a tough time making the entry pass into the post. Knowing his limitations, Teague will generally just not attempt the pass. I guess this is a good thing. I rather Teague know his limitations and not commit turnovers than try to force things and make turnovers.

With this said, I do like the production the Hawks have been getting out of Teague. He has been attacking offensively. Playing decent defense. And he KNOWS HIS LIMITATIONS. (That all caps was for Josh.)

All of the coaches and players in the league know the deal with the Hawks. If the Hawks get a lead then they often times will keep building the momentum and are usually pretty tough to catch up to. Conversely, “for whatever reason” as Stan Van Gundy very tactfully put it, if they fall behind by 8 or 10 points, the Hawks pack up their tents and fall straight over the cliff just like Wile E. Coyote chasing the Road Runner, never to be seen again until the next game.

The dudes really need to work on their mental toughness because they are the most bipolar team in the league, by far.

The Hawks lost the game last night because they played carelessly and recklessly all night, constantly turning the ball over and giving it back to the Bulls. Not to mention the fact that the Bulls dominated the glass all night long. Why the Hawks didnt stick to the game plan of game#1 that worked so well is a mystery to me. It would be hard to get equal value for Josh as far as a trade goes so I would be very wary of doing something like that. Marvin as I have said before he is what he is. His biggest problem is that he was picked too high. If he was picked say 16th or so most would be ok with his performances. That is his biggest downfall expectations for a #2 pick. Josh unfortunately thinks he is Lamar Odom and was never taught how to play inside out game and a structured one. Josh seems like that type who would rather have a flashy dunk that a layup even if both results in two points. He plays to what he thinks are his strengths and unfortunately a back to the basket game or dribbling to go inside arent his strentghs. It is really simple as that

There was a stretch in the second half prior to JS taking off his head band that LD should have undoubtedly taken Smith out of the game. To watch those 2-3 minutes were just painful. I don’t just blame JS for these episodes of poor judgement and knowledge of the game, you have to wonder why isn’t LD saying/doing anything, why are his teammates giving him the ball in positions where he knows he is going to fail and why there is no one in sight that will demand that he get inside. On two of JS ill advised shots, “chicken heart” MW made the pass. Which brings me to my most glaring point. The make up of this team is such that all of these guys are likable, mild mannered and there appears to be no one who is demanding enough to expect more not even the coach. That is why the emergence of JT is so vital. This point guard by committee is destroying the flow of the game in the absence of streaky hot shooters. How many good teams historically in the NBA have allowed whoever gets the ball to push it up the floor? On one hand you marvel at the fact that they all can push on the other hand you understand why Marvin is pushing the ball and kicking it out to JS for jumpers, he does not have the ability to make the right play at the end of the push. A prime example of this is MW push in the first half when he had a trailer on a two on one and instead of dropping off the pass for a dunk, he makes a weak attempt at a layup only to be bailed out by a foul and subsequently missing both free throws. Lastly is Al had 14 rebounds he should have had 28. on most occasions he has morphed into a perimeter player, hoisting far too many jumpers, add his jumpers to JJ’s, JC’s, JS’s and this team is solely an outside team. There is rarely a chance of offensive rebounds. Perhaps more alarming than Al’s putrid offensive game is his poor defensive rotations, where he often appears to be asleep. Although his offensive game may be mechanical at times his defense should never be out of gear as much as it has been over the course of this year.

All that being said with all of the mistakes and lack of judgement, this is a very winnable series, all that is required is attention to detail.

Interesting with the playoffs going now one of the most unpredictable I have seen in a long time. I think you are seeing though is a changing of the guards. The old school teams like San Antonio, Boston LA are slowly being replaced by the younger ones such as Heat, Bulls, Philly,Pacers, Hawks, Knicks, Memphis, Okc, Portland. Jason Collins should replace Josh Smith in the starting lineup. Like I said yesterday, Josh Smith has the skills set, abilities and capacities to perform on a day-to-day basis AS GOOD AS D-WADE or LABRON JAMES. Smith, however, is lazy and could care less about making plays and performing with excellence. ALL JOSH SMITH CARES ABOUT WHEN HE IS IN THE GAME IS TO CLEAR OUT OF HIS WAY SO THAT HE CAN HOIST UP HIS 3-POINTERS BETWEEN THE 3-POINT LINE AND HALF-COURT. THATS ALL JOSH WANTS TO DO. Josh, if you want do so that, why dont you ever enter the all-star game 3-point shooting contest. You will lose that one too.

The last 4 minutes was the most painful display of the LD offense we have seen since he was announced as the HC. We simply threw in the towel instead of forcing our will.
Saying that, I thought for sure we would be down 0-2. So, in a 5 game series with us having home advantage?
I like our chances if it gets done by Game 6. Otherwise, it is just another ATL heartbreakin’ series when fans start believing in you.

And where would CHI be if Joe went there this summer? My goodness…..

And the truth is, we need Joe more than I thought because we would not blow this thing up had Joe left. We would have signed JC1 to a long term and that might not be the best thing despite the need to have him on our bench as instant offense.

I would have to say if we have concerns about the PG this offseason, then LD and Sund truly don’t know what we have and what a PG is supposed to do. It is going to almost take a MVP performance from JT to keep LD from yanking him.

And remember what Orlando did when they reached the Finals against the Lakers? Jameer was hurt throughout the playoffs, Rafer Alston gets them there and braniac SVG throws Jameer in there and blows any momentum they had that year.

I can see LD doing that once Kirk is ready to go again….just rip Teague right out of there.

WHAT I AM WORRIED ABOUT IS THAT THE HAWKS PLAYED SO POORLY LAST NIGHT THAT I AM SURE THAT IF THEY PLAY LIKE THAT AT PHILLIPS ARENA, THE HOME COURT ADVANTAGE WONT DO THEM ANY GOOD. THEY WILL LOSE TWO STRAIGHT GAMES AT PHILLIPS IF THEY PLAY ANYWHERE CLOSE TO HOW THEY PERFORMED LAST NIGHT. I could see it in the players eyes. THE HAWKS QUIT AFTER THE FIRST 5 MINUTES OF LAST NIGHTS CONTEST. THEY JUST WANTED TO GET THE HELL OF THE COURT AND INTO THEIR ROLLS ROYCES AND ABANDON THEIR JOBS. It was the worst pick in history,

Al Horford is listed as 6′10, 245 on the official NBA website, so is not to small to play center, and he was voted by the coaches two years in a row as an All Star Center. He would have no chance to be an All Star if he played power forward, and I still am not sure if he is a better power forward than Josh. His defense is very average, and his help defense is terrible, and he has absolutely no post game.

If Josh wants to take so many jump-shots from distance, then WHY IS HE TOO LAZY TO WORK ON HIS JUMP SHOT DURING THE OFF-SEASON. I have posted a million times on these blogs, Josh needs to find himself in the gym and launch 1000 jumpers per day during the off-season until he hits them at about a 50% clip. If he does that, he will become one the best jump-shooters in the league and the Hawks will win the championship. Why not be dedicated if they are paying you MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO BE A PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER. You are paid to be a professional and not to be an ameteur, which is what Josh is.

Jamal Crawford . . if you’re reading the blog, relay these numbers to Josh Smith, and see how he reacts to them.

On shots in the paint, he’s 12 – 25 FG ( 48% )
On shots at the rim, he’s 21 – 32 FG ( 66% )

Total: 33 – 57 FG ( 58% ) on total shots inside the paint.

So he’s shooting 16% on shots outside the paint . . and 58% on shots inside the paint.

If he REALLY understands where he is efficient on offense, show him these numbers, and ask him why does he continue to shoot jumpers, and especially 3s. Ask him why he doesn’t drift toward the paint or flash in the paint.

He honestly should not be shooting a jumpshot unless it’s less than 5 seconds left on the clock. And he should never be set up beyond 20 feet in the first place, even if coach has him out there in the offense.

LD plays PG’s like the NFL does QB’s. The 2nd teamer just doesn’t exist unless it’s garbage time or the 1st teamer is injured.

I’d rather him say how can I get the most effective 48 minutes out of the PG position, and each position really. 25 mpg from Kirk and 23 from Teague? Ok let’s go with that.

But it’s Kirk or nothing at this point. Kinda glad he’s hurt in a way since LD doesn’t know how to utilize talent. This forces him to play Teague.

Keys to game 3:

Shot selection and ball movement on offense

A good front court rotation that includes ZaZa and may include Collins, Etan, Powell and/or Armstrong.

Maybe playing Wilkens more if Marvin is off his game (I burst out laughing as I typed that – He’s almost always off his game). At least Wilkens plays like he cares as someone said.

And Teague just needs to be Teague.

And let’s not get to carried away with Jeff. I may be his #1 fan as regulars on this blog can attest. That being said, he is:

1) Fresh, because he has barely played this year

2) And he’s playing a one legged DRose, who’s still pretty good playing 1 legged.

Jeff if good, and going to be very good in this League.

And I’m just glad he didn’t collapse under the pressure.

And he deserves rotational minutes at least, if not the starting job. But we have 2 good PG’s for the 1st time since????

And Mr. Horford . . what people are saying about you being allergic to the paint, is right on point. If your midrange jumper is broke, do what most bigs do (( cough )) Noah (( cough )), and start RELENTLESSLY crashing the offensive boards. Get your points by grinding to get offensive rebounds and putting them back in the hole.

With the amount of jumpers that Chicago missed last night, you and Smith should’ve had 12+ rebounds apiece easily. But for you, the rebounding expectations has to be placed a little higher. Your 14 rebounds looks impressive . . but you only had 2 offensive rebounds total ( both in the 3rd quarter ).

With the way you are shooting the ball, we need you to be a DOMINANT rebounder. And that means more offensive rebounds in which you’re getting us extra possessions. If you’re not getting the ball to shoot your precious 18 footer, crash the boards HARD, to see if you can get an offensive rebound.

If your teammate at PF isn’t going to do it, or box people out to keep them off the boards, you need to have a mindset that you’re going to get 20 rebounds.

@ Grandad . . . maybe I was hard on Al with the D+ rating . . so I’ll give him a C-.

I mean, I can’t consciously give him a C for that performance last night, despite the ( +19 ) in help value he gave us last night. He had a ( – 13 ) for the game, which was the worst on the team. His jumper was completely off. Despite the number of missed shots, he only grabbed 2 offensive rebounds.

When we subtract the jumpers that you missed ( 8 ), the Hawks were 4 – 20 from 16 – 23 feet and 3 – 13 from three. That’s 7 – 33 on long jumpshots that you didn’t shoot ( 26 misses ) . . yet you only were able to grab 2 of those rebounds.

I’ve been asking all playoffs, who is going to get dirty or grimey on this team? Collins can do it, but he can’t rebound worth a damn on most nights. Zaza can do it, but his defensive rebounding is less to be desired. So if you and Smith don’t want to get your uniform dirty, who can we count on to do it?

Just a disappointing night from you guys. Completely wasted a career game from Teague, who essentially gave us Jamal Crawford like production last night. Had you two even played close to decent, we win that game.

Stop being so fuggin soft, and mix it up on BOTH ENDS of the floor.

Play like a friggin BIG.

Rod from College Park: you are absolutely right. AL IS MISSING IN ACTION. WHERE IS THE EXPLOSIVENESS FROM THIS ALL-STAR WHO HAS BEEN SPECTACULAR THE LAST 4 OR 5 YEARS. WHERE IS AL HORFORD? The guy who is playing inside Al Horford has quit for the season. Maybe Al has been brainwashed or his mind has been completely short-circuited but every time Al touches the ball and has an open look for a jump-shot, Al takes the basketball and gives it up like its a hot potatoe, instead of shooting his 64% field goal percentage and drilling the jump shot. If I didnt know any better, I would think that Al has a twin brother who has been playing basketball for the last couple of months and the real Al Horford is either in another country, on another planet or is on the beach in Hawaii somewhere. Please put out an APB on Al Horford so he can come back to the team and help us defeat the Bulls so we can move on to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Hawks are not handling success very well. Last night for example, the Hawks had a chance to go up 2-0. The Bulls offense is anemic, boozer has turf toe and cant score well, Derrick Rose has a grade2 strained ankle and instead of the hawks taking advantage of the situation, they watched the Bulls dominate the glass and embarrass them on national tv. The hawks stink and I cant wait for them to be eliminated.

I know Al played bad last night. He’s gassed.

But it is still pretty difficult for me to criticize a guy who is 3rd in rebounding during the playoffs for the entire NBA at 11.0 per game.

He also leads all PF’s/C’s in Assists per game with 4.0.

So while we criticize him, he’s till playing like a high level All Star in certain facets of his game.

SteveW

May 5th, 2011

And about Al:

Among PF’s and C’s still in the playoffs, he’s number #1 in minutes played per game.

And amongst players still in the playoffs, he’s second in rebounds per game.

So Al is doing pretty well in many areas, but his shooting is not doing very well.

And it’s not like Boozer beat us last nigh or anything with Al guarding him. Josh dominates Boozer however.

SteveW . . but he’s not. The only thing . . and I mean the only thing he’s doing better than he did during the season, is defensive rebound the basketball. And even with that, he’s only slightly better.

Horford, for the most part, is an offensive PF/C. So when his offense is bad, he tends to be bad. We’re finally getting halfway decent play out of JJ throughout the playoffs, and Jamal for that matter.

But the guy that most people were ready to anoint as the “cornerstone of the franchise” is playing like a SG at center? Nah man. Al used to play tough on the inside and flex on people when he made a tough play. Now, he’s just looking to shoot his jumper, whether he’s making them or not. As a “big”, he needs to be trying to hit the offensive glass, and see if he can get some cheap points the same way Noah did last night. He and Smith don’t even think in those terms though, because they love the perimeter too much.

Why was the smallest guy on the court (Teague), the only player driving to the basket? This stuff is not rocket science. Josh and Al need to be cutting to the basket to get high percentage shots. I guess everyone wants to be Reggie Miller or Ray Allen. If you miss a few, drive too the basket and try to get fouled or get a layup, to continue to shoot jump shots is INSANE!

The whole game last night, even though we were down 8-12 points pretty much the whole time, I never really got the impression they outplayed us.

As soon as this team pays attention to rebounding, BOXING OUT (which Josh has NEVER figured out), and being aggressive on offense, it will coast in this series.

I am not impressed with Chicago. Teague played just as well as Rose did last night.

It was not a bad pick,

All this Marvin bashing is only because we passed on Paul and Williams.but guess what?..Neither has won a damn thing in the NBA..

CP3’s NBA accomplishments;

Rookie of the year, 4 time all star, All NBA, and former NBA all defense team. (I wont even mention his Olympic Gold Medal).

Marvin’s NBA accomplishments? Crickets…Crickets…Crickets.

Does Chris Paul have an NBA title? No. But neither does Dwight Howard, LeBron James, D-Rose etc. Would it have been ok to pass over thos guys in the draft to take Marvin?

And for the record, CP3’s career playoff average is 22 points and 11 assists per game. Marvin’s playoff average? 8 points, 4 rebs.

“More Damien less Marvin”-YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is why we lost game 2. Marvin and Josh were liabilities on the offensive end and could not capitalize on the double teams sent at Joe and the attention paid to Jamal. Damien has only given positive minutes with his time on the floor and Marvin is timid on offense and slow to react to Deng’s slashing on defense.

But Marvin was not the worst player on the floor, it was Josh. Give him credit for his honesty in the post-game response, but he could not even make a free-throw let alone a jump-shot. How about a lay up? He missed a couple easy and-one’s and layups around the basket because he was in a rush and panicked. He needs to settle down and finish strong at the basket. That was bad, but the turnovers were the worst-starting the 2nd half, in the first 4 minutes josh had 3 turnovers and an airballed jumpshot. He should have been pulled from the game, but LD kept him in along with Marvin!!!!!!!!

LD needs to hold everyone accountable and if they are not contributing then they do not deserve to be on the floor. Plus, guys ran out of gas in the 2nd half, Al, Joe, and Teague, played the entire half AGAIN and had nothing left when we finally came within striking distance.

In the first quarter our offense was excellent. We had 4 straight possessions that ended in layups. But turnovers and a lack of contribution from our wings lost us the game. Teague did everything he could to keep us in the game and he was undoubtedly our best player in game 2, but other veterans have to step up. You do not have to win the game, but you absolutely can not make mistakes that lose us the game. Play with in yourself. Joe and Jamal will not be able to carry us this series like they did in the last one. The Bulls are too good and too smart defensively to let that happen.

If I were LD I would be very quick to go to the lineup of: Teague, Joe, Damien/Jamal, Al, Zaza

Also, it is important to stay positive if your the Hawks. a 1-1 split is a good result and we have a chance to take control of the series with 2 WINS HERE AT HOME.

That’s right, we need both of these games. What has seperated the Hawks from the championship contending teams in the past is that “killer instinct”.The Hawks did not have it against Orlando in the first series when up 3-1 we took a game off, got blown out and let them back into the series.

This will be the ultimate test to see how far the Hawks have come-they did their job in Chicago with a split and now they have to come home and take care of business and get control of this series. NO COMPLAINING, NO EXCUSES.

If we give everything we have and play with in ourselves we will be in the NBA Finals this year.

Another thing,

why is Al gaurding Boozer?????? Josh owned Boozer 4 times by blocking his fade aways, but when Josh was matched up against Noah he gave up just as many offensive rebounds.

Al is a better rebounder(he boxes out) than Josh and he is a better pick and roll defender, which is important because Noah is setting most of the screens.

Al Horford has been getting a free pass while all the blame falls on Josh. You cannot expect Josh to suddenly be great with his wing-play and penetration at this point in the season. He takes wild long two’s as a product of the spot he is asked to take for Joe and Jamal (weak side ISO). The play everyone is talking about is actually Joe’s fault dropping the ball to Josh with 6 seconds on the clock left.
Many times we are misinformed to expect Josh to shoot his way onto 15 points or so, his best bet is getting offensive rebounds and a couple of post up plays.

As for Mr. Horford,WTF? MC or Bradley and the national media all seem to forget that he is supposedly an All Star player-well, it is time he gets his through hook or crook, I dont care if he scores 15 points all by tip, please score. I dont see why Josh is playing Noah either-MISMATCH LD.

They wont trade Ne Ne unless they get equal value in return. Ne Ne is playing as good as James Worthy did when he was with the Lakers. Right now AL HORFORD DOESNT KNOW WHAT PLANET HE IS ON. Calling Earth to Al Horford, pickup Al Horford. Al is masquerading as though he is Marvin Williams right now and giving us absolutely nothing. I cant wait until Al returns from Mars back down to earth again. Al Horford will be dangerous again once he returns to earth, remembers how to play basketball and starts helping the Hawks again.

Marvin, Jamal, Al, and Joe Smith combined to shoot 11-45 (24.4%) from the field last night, as the only good performances came from Johnson and Teague. The frontline and the bench need to step out if the Hawks are gonna take this series. Check it out:

“Josh dominates Boozer however.”

Exactly! Why is everyone here calling for a lineup change? We dominated their front line with Al & Smoove in Game 1. We just need to go back to the matchups which worked.

Smoove on Boozer / Horford on Noah

a.k.a.

LAZY on LAZY / CRAZY on CRAZY

The Bulls were a weak #1 seed to start with, and now their superstar is banged up. The Hawks should win this series in 6. Coulda woulda shoulda …

I’m just going to start putting Josh Smith in the same category I put Marvin Williams: Just not that good, expect nothing. If I do that, it will make watching J-Smoove barely try and take stupid shots a little more tolerable.

I used to think Josh was better than that, but he isn’t. Expect nothing, and any thing good he does will just be icing on the cake.

Northcyde – I still stick to my theory that Al is gassed.

I know during the regular season, when he played alot, he usually ended up hurt. He’s toughing it out on the D Boards, 1 against 3 many times because Josh is nowhere to be found, and the Bulls are crashing Deng in there also.

My analysis is – Al is too passive offensively

No post game

Playing too many minutes

I say bring ZaZa, Etan, and/or Collins for some spot minutes a little more.

Section 303 – Think what most Josh fans miss, is Josh jogging up the court at less than half speed alot. I know almost all NBA’ers take plays off, it just seems like Josh does it alot more than most.

So yes he is a beast on D, when he wants to play D and locks in. When he doesn’t, he just becomes Marvin, invisible.

Bulls a one man team?

Lol from NBA.com,

Noah (season) – 11.7 ppg | 10.4 rpg | 2.2 apg | 1.5 bpg | 1 spg
Noah (playoffs) – 12.9 ppg | 10.9 rpg | 1.9 apg | 2.1 bpg | 1.1 spg

Add that with his mental and physical toughness. As well as his almost 5 O-Rebs per game.

Boozer (season) – 17.5 ppg | 9.6 rpg | 2.5 apg
Boozer (playoffs) – 10.3 | 10 rpg | 1.6 apg

Given his point production has taken a dive in the playoffs, there is nothing to convince me that he still cant go 20-10 or 15-10. Hell even 10-10 is very good, considering his teammate is getting the same numbers.

Deng(season) – 17.4 ppg | 5.8 rpg | 2.8 apg | 1 spg
Deng(playoffs) – 18.3 ppg | 7 rpg | 3.1 apg | 1.3 spg

Nuff said.

“I was [ticked] off at myself,” he said “I understand what I need to do to be more effective with this ball club, especially at the offensive end.

He doesnt listen to coaching and it shows-LD constantly tells him to attack the paint and what does he do -shoot jumper after jumper. Also lets be honest here he really isnt that good of a post player he misses alot of easy shots and is about as limited as horford in reference to post moves.
Props to teague for showing some “DOG” 1 turnover in 2 games if the rest of the guys would hv shown anything we would have won this game easily. Boozer is garbage 80 mill for this clown is a rip off.

The Bulls haven’t looked good at all, and it’s pretty obvious Rose isn’t himself. As MC says, “either Rose’s ankle isn’t right or he just doesn’t have it in him to be aggressive because he has so many passive moments.” Rose is about the least-passive guy in the league, so his ankle’s gotta be bothering him. With two days of rest for that ankle, the Hawks might be in serious trouble.

I’m really starting to believe I think it was “Buddy Grizzard” with this Las Vegas Larry thing. The rotations and play calling was just terrible.

1. Josh Smith played the worst first half of basketball I have ever seen. Coach Drew, if you are telling him to go to the hole, and not shoot jumpers, and to give the ball to the point guard, and he continues to do the opposite, sit his a@% on the bench for a little. Josh plyed much better in the second half, but the first half was horrible.

2. Marvin Williams should not ever, and I stress EVER start a professional basketball game for the rest of the time that he is an Atlanta Hawk. It is so obvious that Damien Wilkins will give us much more, and for some reason Coach Drew and Coach Woodson have some sort of infatuation with him.

3. Al Horford was voted an Al Star as a center. He is an average power forward. Please let him play center. He should be guarding Dwight Howard and Noah, not Josh Smith. Josh Smith should not have to defend centers. Al is is All Star, let him prove it. Playing him at PF exclusively is turning him into Marvin Williams. No reason Noah should score close to 20 points, and our All Star Center has 6 points.

4. Jamal Crawford should not play point guard. If Teague is on the floor, Teague should be handling the ball, not Jamal. If Teague is on the floor, he should always guard Rose. Jamal should not be matched on Rose unless we have no other options.

5. Teague should have been starting day one. What in the hell is he doing in practice, to no get any minutes?

It was a great pick

Horford and Josh Smith have picked the wrong time to disappear. The Hawks cannot be proud of the way they played last nights game in Chicago. In that game, the Hawks were worse than they were when they got blown out 4 times by Orlando last year by over 100 points. I’m not trying to jinx them, but if the Hawks continue playing like they played last night, they will lose the next 2 games in Atlanta at Phillips and give Chicago the upper hand for no apparent reason. Im sick of being a Hawks fan. Its a complete waste of time. The players dont care. The will have one great game followed by 10 lousy games in a row.

I think we as fans collectively are STARTING TO PANIC because we think the Hawks are going to lose the series to Chicago. Hey look, the Hawks are coming home to Phillips where they are much more comfortable and play better. All the Hawks have to do to beat Chicago is REBOUND THE BASKETBALL MUCH BETTER (MEANING JOSH AND AL MUST PLAY UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL AND GRAB A LOT OF BOARDS OFF THE GLASS). Second, limit Chicago to just one opportunity downfield each time, Third, keep Rose out of the paint; and last but not least, Fourth, share the basketball and get great shot selections. Doing these fundamentally sound things will allow the Hawks to win games 3 and 4 and give us a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. If the Hawks dont do them, then fire Larry Drew and get him out of here as quickly as possible.

The Biggest Reason Why the Hawks should Destroy the Bulls is that there is no MICHAEL JORDAN or SCOTTIE PIPPEN on the Bulls this time around. The Hawks should be playing in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Maimi Heat. Everything is set up for them to get that done. Boston is trailing in their series 0-2 and will lose that series. The Lakers are down 0-2 and may not make the Finals. If the Lakers dont come back, the Western conference finals participant will be either Thunder, Dallas or Memphis. All the teams that remain in the playoffs THE HAWKS CAN BEAT THE TAR OUT OF ALL OF THEM. The teams that dont make it:Boston and Los Angeles are the two teams who can beat the Hawks. The parity is so even and the great teams are all but gone that this may be the only shot for the Hawks to ever win a world title. Plus, Chicago is playing worse than the Cleveland Caviliers right now and it would be a shame not to destroy them and send them home for the summer. Hawks kick the crap out of the Bulls. The Hawks are for real! They are en route to Phillips now and will stop D-Rose and Bulls tomorrow night. When Rick Petino former coach of the Celtics said when he coached them years ago that LARRY BIRD AND KEVIN MCKALE ARE NOT WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR, its almost the same as if Larry Drew were to say to his team, MICAHEL JORDAN are SCOTTIE PIPPEN are not playing for this current Bulls team. The guys who are playing are D-Rose (who has suffered a Grade2 ankle sprain); and Carlos Boozer (who is suffering from Turf Toe). My God the table is set for the Hawks to dominate the Bulls. I noticed in last nights game NO ONE COULD STOP JEFF TEAGUE AND MARVIN WILLIAMS FROM DRIVING INTO THE PAINT AND MAKING LAYUPS. Josh Smith doesnt do it because he is too stupid to drive in the lane and make easy baskets. Like a blogger pointed out before, josh is shooting 20% from the outside and 60% from inside the paint, yet josh continues to launch jumpshots hurting his team only making a 20% percentage, while we are struggling offensively to put away a pesky Bulls team who is outrebounding us by a country mile. If Josh had come inside the paint last night, the Hawks would have won the game by 30 points. JOSH HAS BRICKS FOR BRAINS AND WILL NEVER FIGURE OUT HOW TO UTILIZE HIS GOD-GIVEN ABILITIES.

NeNe would Destroy Boozer and Noah!.

In 27 minutes against the Bulls on 11/8/2010, NeNe had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Noah had 13 points and 19 rebounds. Deng had 17 pts and 7 rebs.

In 26 minutes against the Bulls on 11/26/2010, NeNe had 18 points and 7 rebounds. Noah had 17 points and 16 rebounds. Deng had 24 pts and 11 rebs.

I don’t think Boozer played either game.

So the numbers say NeNe does not destroy Noah. In fact, Noah destroyed NeNe. And by the way, NeNe only averaged 7.6 rebounds per game this season, and Kenyon Martin averaged 6 rebs per game, despite Denver playing up and down.

Lukas: how quickly you have forgotten. In the clinching Hawks playoff game againt Orlando, Marvin had the game of his career getting 10 important points and in my opinion, was the MOST VALUALE PLAYER in the clinching contest against Orlando that allowed the hawks to advance. Forget about Joe’s 34 points [JOE CAN DO THAT IN HIS SLEEP], but without Marvins points there is a game 7 in Orlando and we lose the series. For now please just accept Marvins contributions regardless of how scant they may be, then if we get eliminated them worry about what to do with Marvin during the offseason. Sautee,

Boxscores do not tell the whole story. I know you watched the game, so you saw how Noah and Co. owned the paint. Horford at the offensive end spent 90% of the time at the periphery; at defense he often gets beaten for the position, he does not help downlow (althoug he helps the guards at the periphery), and the one that piss me off the most: he pretends to be boxing out his man while watching a guard penetrating his area to get a layup.

How he got 14 rebounds? honestly, i have no idea. How he only got 2 off rebounds? because he is not getting dirty downlow at the offensive end.

Are we really still debating whether Marvin Williams was a bad pick?

Dude that keeps coming here insisting that Marvin was a good pick isn’t going by any actual facts or numbers.

Fact is, Marvin Williams can’t create his own shot, and he doesn’t shoot a lights out percentage when he’s fed the ball for open looks either. He’s not an above average defender. He’s not an above average rebounder. He’s an inconsistent role players who was selected #2 overall who’d probably be riding some other teams bench or be out of the league like his former UNC teammates Sean May and Rashad McCants are now.

I don’t know what games you watch, and I don’t know what leads you to believe that if this guy got more touches, he’d be worthy of that #2 pick. Truth is, even when Marvin does get his opportunities, dude doesn’t do ish with it.

Stop with the Marvin Williams garbage now. Dude is mad garbage. Dude’s been starting for 6 years now and hasn’t shown anything in those 6 years to prove he was worth the pick. Jeff Teague’s been rotting on the bench for 2 seasons – - dude gets his opportunity – - and makes the most of it. I don’t think Coach Drew is running any plays for Teague. Dude takes the initiative to make it happen himself when he sees his opportunity.

Since Coach Thibodeau feels Marvin Williams is one of the most underrated players in the NBA, do you think Hawks mgmt. can convince him, John Paxson and the rest of the Bulls’ boyz to trade Deng for Marvin on a straight-up swap? The answer is “not.” I personally think Coach Thibs was just blowing smoke up our backsides.

To a lesser extent, Josh Smith too (i cannot imagine how good this guy would be if he had played a couple of NCAA seasons, under a coach who would exploit his abilities).”

The problem I have with this argument is that you can count the number of good coaches in college basketball on one hand. For every Roy Williams or Coach K there are about a hundred Paul Hewitts who are good at recruiting and clueless when it comes to actual coaching. College basketball is a game won by effort and outside shooting, not by some fantastic basketball fundamentals. See the national championship game this year for example. Show me one actual fundamental basketball play that occurred in that game.

To me the problem with Marvin and Kwame is not that they didn’t get the most out of their talent; it is that they never had a ton of talent in the first place. What they did have was an NBA body and athleticism at a younger age than most, which caused them to vault up people’s draft boards. But having the body and athleticism to excel in the NBA has nothing to do with having the ball skills to excel in the NBA. LeBron came into the league straight out of high school with great ball skills. Chris Paul entered college with great ball skills. Marvin and Kwame never had the ability to do anything with the ball.

As far as Smoove is concerned, to me the likelihood of someone like him coming into the NBA out of high school and landing with a coach who can coach him up is much greater than the likelihood of him going to college and playing for a coach who can coach him up. If I’m not mistaken Smoove signed a letter of intent to play at Indiana. Was Mike f-cking Davis really going to turn Smoove from a jumpshot-happy enigma into a low post beast over the course of a couple of 30 game seasons? I don’t buy it.

Now if the argument is that college would have helped these players off the court, which in turn would have helped them on the court, maybe that could have been the case. Maybe if Smoove had gone through the charade of pretending to pay attention in class and having “tutors” take all his tests for him, like every other future pro football or pro basketball player in America does in college, somehow by osmosis he would have become less stubborn and more receptive to NBA coaching.

The one group of people who is clearly benefited by the age restriction, and would be benefited further if the age restriction were increased, is NBA GMs. The longer players are made to wait before they can enter the league, the more game film GMs and scouts have with which to evaluate them. If Marvin and Kwame had stayed in college for several years, my guess is that eventually when each one had the chance to shine they would have been exposed as mediocre players, and the result would have been that they would have plummeted down draft boards accordingly.

Najeh,

I think college BB serves an important purpose in the development of a player. No matter how bad the coach would be, players learn certain tools that they should have by the time they get into the NBA: they get basic and advanced knowledge of BB, learn how to play within a squeme, how to play defense, and they mature during the process. In college, coaches take the talent and polish it. The NBA should not be the playground to develop a player from the very base; instead, it should be the playground where a well instructed player display his talent.

I think the one-and-done rule has an important role in the College BB poor fundamental’s play. Universities (UV) do not know if the player the recruited will stick to them so they go and get as much as they can from them (the ultimate goal is always to win). I guess UV don’t waist time and energy into developing and teaching plays that will require time to grasp, in a group of players that won’t be together the next year. They will develop tactics that could ensure winning now.

IMO, players from the 90’s overall were better basketball players than the ones of the 00s, and college did have something to do with it (better players, not more talented). On the subject about Marvin and Kwame, an extra year in college would have deflated the perception bout how ready were they for the big show.

Would JS be a different player with a couple of years in college? absolutely!! he came into the league and was develop under a “highlight” environment. He was not mentally prepared for the challenge, and 7 years later we are paying the consequences of it. What would had happened in college? Who knows! maybe he would have learned how to shoot, or better yet, when to shoot; he would be a poiser and more mature player; or simply, he would be the same of today. We’ll never know.

It was a great pick You finally showed up? I posted against you hours ago. Fair, Marvin was big OFF THE BENCH in the Orlando game. He should continue to COME OFF THE BENCH!! Wilkins does what most other Hawks will not do… slash to the basket. Marvin has a better jumper, but that is it! He has one good game per series. He will give us another game at some point, but really, prior to this series I said he is the X factor.

Deng has ate his lunch so defensively he is doing so poorly. Then he gives us nothing on the offensive end. He did grab 7 boards, but still I would love Marvin to come off the bench.

Lastly, look at Durant and Anthony. Both played one year in college, but both were the “Man” for their team in college. Marvin came off the bench and made on shot! Should the long list of game shot winners (Tate George, etc…) all be high draft picks? Even Laettner had a better career than Marvin and he is borderline bust!

Now I am bias because I play ball so I see the opportunities hes passing up for weeks on end now…He is literally passing up great opportunities to help his team..Something must be wrong with him..He’s not the same player???

He should not dare talk about Josh’s game. He is allowing himself to be neutralized without even trying…so sad……………..Allstar Al………………..@6′10″ this dude should be trying to tear down the back board!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Send a message to everybody in the gym…………………..

I hear Toronto is open to trading Calderon and Bargnani. We could use a BIG that can score, Bargnani is a post player he is a poor man’s Dirk IMO. I would love him as a Hawk but not for Josh because Bargnani does not rebound or play good D.

Hawks get: Bargnani and Calderon

Raptors get: Kirk, Zaza, Pape, Magnum, 2nd rd pick in 2012, 1st rd pick in 2013 and 2015

PG Teague/Calderon/Anthony Carter
SG Joe/ Jamal/ Anthony Parker
SF Josh/ Marvin/Damien
PF Bargnani/ draft (Jordan Williams)/Chris Wilcox
C Al/ sign Jeff Foster/ resign Collins

This is not ideal but we would be a lot more explosive offensively and have maybe just enough defense. Calderon is a starting level PG so we could use him as trade bait for a team needing a PG with a serviceable C.

Al’s logging too many minutes – he can’t keep pace.

We would have lost the Orlando series if he played D against Dwight very much.

And the 1 game on, 1 day off cycle we are on normally fits the Hawks perfectly, at least it seemed to during the regular season.

Rose’ ankle and Boozers’ toe are probably not getting any better, only worse.

Noah beat us last night if any Bull did. But we really just beat ourselves.

The Chicago coach’s are good at making adjustments – see the Pacers series. That game 5 they really came to play.

And the Bulls are very deep. Watson, Asik, Thomas, Gibson, those guys may not play a whole lot sometimes, but they can play very well when given the opportunity..

The fact is that as long as you give NBA owners a way to screw themselves they will, bottomline. The 10 highest salaries in the NBA this current season in which the season is already over for a lot of these high paid guys are as follows:

Kobe
Rashard Lewis
Kevin Garnett
Tim Duncan
Michael Redd
Pau Gasol
Andrei Kirilenko
Gilbert Arenas
Yao Ming
Dirk Nowitzki

It is quite obvious that half of these guy have no business on this list due to there production. Rashard, Michael, Andrei, Gilbert, and Yao have no business on this list. The only thing that I can see is contracts might need to have clauses in which you have to play over half of the season to get the full amount of that year’s pay. Maybe teams should take care of that themselves by simply having that as a incentive, but I could care less about the owners crying when they don’t conduct good business they deserve to lose money.

About Al Horford:

His last 5 games stat line

9.6 ppg/ 13.0 rebounds/ 5.2 assists/ 1.2 blocks/ 1.2 turnovers/ 41.4 minutes per game

If you would have told me 5 games ago you could have this statline with Al, take it or leave it, I would have said give it too me. We need the Boards, Assists, and no mistakes. And we need some blocks from Al.

I think just seeing Noah want it so much more than Al last night hurt. Several times Al and Josh had position, neither blocked out, so Noah just went around them Rebounding is about effort, and that was just pure effort. Same with Deng. Talk about effort – that guy is just an athlete. He’s what Marvin could be if Marvin wanted it bad enough.

Back to Al. He’s just tired. He needs a rest. Put Etan on Boozer and Noah a little. He’s got enough beef. Play ZaZa more.

I just hope LD is not punishing Etan for going to his grandmothers funeral or whatever during the Orlando series. All DNP’s since then.

Chucky Hayes is 6- 238

Joel Anthony is 6-9 245

That’s just a few of the top 30 C’s in the League that are smaller or the same size in height or weight as Al. A lot more bench guys play C that are smaller than Al.

Lukas,

“How he got 14 rebounds? honestly, i have no idea. How he only got 2 off rebounds? because he is not getting dirty downlow at the offensive end.”

Lukas, I’m as frustrated as you about Al’s lack of aggressiveness, BUT

Don’t you think his being on the perimeter on offense is part of a plan to take advantage of his mid-range game? He can’t be in two places at the same time, now can he?

I’d MUCH rather see him posting up more, bad post up game and all, JUST SO he could be near enough to get offensive boards. And with the focus on Joe and Jamal for these two series, it’s a waste to have him staying outside while shooting so poorly. If he has the ball outside, I’d like to see him drive to the rim, at least some of the time. That would give him more space for his midrange jumper.

Horford has had a lousy series, but many (not all) on this blog have been a bit over the top in criticizing him without acknowledging his contributions beyond poor his shooting %.

He is, after all, second in rebounding among centers still active for the playoffs. And he leads all playoff centers in assists by a large margin, with a sterling 3.2 / 1 assist to turnover ratio.

That said, I’ll say once again: I miss the 07-09 Horford.

When you draft players that are athletic and have potential, you more than likely or not will be disappointed and sometimes have to wait for years for that person to develop and in most cases unless you have a coach that is a teacher you will have to learn to improve or develop your game on your own. So if the choice is between to draft a Horford who i have seen can already play and a Josh Smith who we are waiting for his potential I am going to draft Horford 9 out of 10 times

I have heard feel Horford is gassed but I dont want to hear that. I have seen Ewing play with bad knees and bust it his whole career exhausted. Same with Jordan play when he couldnt lift his arm and many other players.

This series reminds me a lot of the ‘97 Bulls hawks series but this bulls team isnt nearly as good as the jordan pippen team. This series is for the Hawks to lose. No excuses. IF they lose will be a bitter pill to swallow and I feel major changes will have to happen unless hawks win a chip this year

Recent NBA champions.

Spurs- Duncan protects the rim
Lakers- Bynum protects the rim
Pistons- Wallace protects the rim
Heat- Shaq protects the rim

If I am missing any recent champs remind me.

We are not far off from the Pistons though, but Al is not a NBA championship winning caliber C and he is definitely taller than Ben Wallace but not stronger or tougher and neither is Josh who is just as tall or taller than Ben Wallace but fat rather than strong and not tough enough.

Pistons Hawks
Billups Teague/Hinrich
Hamilton Joe
Prince Josh
Wallace Al
B.Wallace Not good enough yet

Down with the doom and gloom. I never expected the Hawks to get by Orlando. For me this is bonus coverage. All that aside I think we can win the next 2 if Teague holds up. I am not worried about Josh or Al at home.

“how about tv ratings? merchandise sold? ticket sales. i’d like to think those 3 things are pretty tangible.”

“oh but wait. i guess it was just mere coincidence that basketball had gotten to a point where even the most die hard of fans had a hard time watching it. just theory, not fact.”

Those things also coincide with the NBA changing the perimeter hand check rules and the major influx of talent starting with the 2003 draft, as opposed to the 1999-2002 drafts which were largely devoid of superstar-level talent.

“the nfl thrives partly because they have a 3 year rule. most kids are not mature enough to handle the rigors and pressures of professional athletics.”

The much more relevant and overriding reason why the NFL thrives compared to the NBA is because unlike basketball, football is a sport where a good coaching staff can take a team full of role players and make them a championship contender, whereas in the NBA every fan base that roots for a team without a superstar knows deep down inside that their team is not going to win a title. This is just the nature of a sport where 22 players start and height is not a prerequisite vs. a sport where 5 players start and height is a prerequisite — the talent pool is naturally deeper in football. It’s easy to maintain the interest of a larger group of fans when said fans know that their team can also win it all. The age requirement is relatively irrelevant in this regard. By at least one indicator of maturity — criminal record — the NFL does no better than the NBA (and might actually be worse) despite its three year college requirement.

There may be some players who are benefited from a maturity standpoint by going to college as opposed to going straight from high school. I think players like Leon Smith fall under this category. But this discussion started with regards to developing basketball skills, and I don’t think there’s any evidence that prep-to-pros draft busts wouldn’t have just proved themselves to be worthless in college rather than the NBA if they had been forced to go to college for three or four years. Al Jefferson skipped college and has some of the best fundamentals in the league in the low post. Kenyon Martin played four years of college ball and still has little to no offensive game. Ultimately you are what you are as a player regardless of the environment.

and some where in a uproar when several people were saying under no conditions should we start Marvin and to simply stay big even MC said we should start Zaza.

In the playoffs you need big that is willing to throw his body around in that paint every minutes hes on the floor . Al and Josh are not those types of players so you have to put someone out there with them that is willing to do that.

ZaZa and Collins should be on the floor at all times because you need someone who will wear Noah down . In game one we played both and they went at it if you watch there were guys hitting the floor the entire time they were in there .

Wow @ some of the excuses for Horford. No other player on this team, ( maybe other than Teague ), would be protected like some of you are doing with Al.

As our center, Horford needs to play like a BIG. Not a guard.

The assists are great. But I’d much rather for him to grab 4 or 5 offensive rebounds a game, than for him to be dishing out 5 assists.

Play like a damn big. When you’re around the FT line, and a shot goes up, go HARD toward the glass and try to get an offensive rebound. Horford should especially do this if his shot isn’t falling.

I know people like Horford but damn. The excuses are in full effect I see. The people criticizing him are doing it because we see that he is not mixing it up on the inside.

When I talk about BALANCE, one of the aspects I’ve talked about is with our frontcourt. If we can’t have both Smith and Horford playing on the outside, if they’re playing PF and C. One of them will have to go into the paint and do the dirty work.

The balance has to occur somewhere. There is no way we can have a repeat of what we saw last night. With all of those missed shots, either Horford should’ve had close to 20 rebounds, or both Horford and Smith should’ve collected 13+ rebounds apiece.

But these guys can’t keep playing like SG/SFs. Play like friggin BIGS.

And with both guys shooting atrocious in the playoffs, it’s all the more important that they play bigger . . MUCH BIGGER . . than what they are playing right now.

Forget an assist . . how about executing a few nice post moves, or grab an offensive rebound and dunk it on somebody’s head.

Seriously . . can we have THIS HORFORD for the rest of the series?

“And that is a win-win situation for the teams and their fans!! Aren’t you frustrated with Marvin? Don’t you think our GM is pissed with the fact that he owes 23 million to a useless SF with no trade value? Any action that can prevent screwing up in the draft is a good one.”

I didn’t say it wasn’t a win-win for the fans and the teams. You are absolutely right about that. It is however a lose-lose for the players, who risk a career-altering injury the longer they have to play before they can get drafted.

One compromise that I think could work is if they let players declare for the draft out of high school, but still required them to wait a year (or two or whatever) after graduating to actually play in the NBA. This would allow players to cash in on their value at its highest point while allowing teams to outsource some of the talent development and let players “mature” in college or whatever. And an added consequence would be that small market lottery teams might be able to accumulate two or three superstars in the draft and possibly have a chance to keep them longer (as opposed to going through what Cleveland did where they got LeBron and instantly became good too quickly, ultimately being unable to pair him with another superstar through the draft as a result and losing him).

NO REST FOR THE WEARY

While some here have “called-out” All-star Al (including myself) for his lack luster playoff performance, there is also the suggestion that he is just fatigue to explain his shortcomings. After reviewing these stats, that idea may have some merit;

2010-11 Postseason MINUTES LEADERS: Minutes per Game

Displaying results 1-50 of 142 PLAYERS found

RANKED #10 Al Horford, ATL GP=8 MIN=320 MPG= 40.0
RANKED #5 Joe Johnson, ATL GP=8 MIN=333 MPG=41.7
RANKED #4 LeBron James, MIA GP=7 MIN=295 MPG=42.2
RANKED #1 Luol Deng, CHI GP=7 MIN=302 MPG=43.2

Other than Dwight Howard who has gone fishing, Al is the only other center in the top 10 out of 142 players playing the most playoff minutes. So while he wears the burden of being an All-star and should still be criticized when he doesn’t carry his team, it is worth noting a possible reason why. He should take notes from JJ whose minutes are even worse but is playing at a higher level compared to Al. For this reason (at least for now), JJ (for the first time in the playoff) is meeting “star” expectation.

But one of the “overlooked” root cause to Al Horford struggles should not go unnoticed, that’s LD. I can understand why he over-extends JJ minutes since he brings unique skill sets that can’t be replicated from the Hawks roster. But there is no excuse as to why he over-extends AL Horford minutes since the Hawks are over-stocked at the center position.

When bloggers criticize Larry Drew as being Woody-“Lite”, this is exhibit A: he rides his “star” players like horses and runs them in the ground. During playoff, they have no legs and we blame the players for not showing up. Some of our criticism is justified but their fatigue often goes under the radar.

JeJe……. Sorry it took so long for me to respond. Yes teague played his first preseason game against memphis had 20 points then in practice the next day sprained his ankle on Jamal crawford. He played 3 total preseason games he came back when they beat the heat in the final 2 preaseason games teague had 8 points in his first game back from injury. But Larry Drew did not want to make bibby mad. Woody said before he got fired that teague next year will be my starting point guard. Then drew came in saying teague has to earn it. TRUST YOUR EYES. you can see talent I dont know what LD was watching thinking bibby was better for this team. Yes bibby could shoot the 3 but bibby would have been fine coming off the bench. This was LDs fault and now he has to play teague. LD get no credit for playing teague now it is too late he should have done it at the begining of the season then he would have been a smart coach.

Al and the rest of the Hawks don’t get offensive rebounds because LD is too worried about getting back on transition D. This is nothing new. Why is everyone just now criticising Al for this fact. Its been going on all year. At the most, LD will send one guy to the boards while everyone else drops back once the shot goes up. Watch the Bulls. They’ll send at least 2 or 3 guys to the glass on the offensive end. LD wants this team to grab defensive rebounds and get out of the break. He doesn’t appear to be worried with second chance points for the Hawks.

superiorblogman

LD just does not get it. I really want to win this series and head into uncharted waters but he is so stupid, and has so few principles but talks such a good game that makes unknowing people think he is smart and has principles.

Bottom line: If LD is so stupid that he can not see the only way we win this series is to start Collins or Zaza he should not be back next year. He should have never went back to this small lineup that gets us killed because the lineup creates toughness and consistency issues.

PG Teague
SG Joe
SF Josh
PF Al
C Zaza or Collins

We win this series, beat the Celts and atleast push Miami to the limits if we stayed with the big (tougher) lineup. I still say the best regular season performance we had was blowing Utah out, in there building when they still had Deron Williams after they beat us early in the season. The difference was we went to the big lineup the second time around and blew there doors off. LD just does not get what his best lineup is, that’s why whoever the new GM is has to give Marvin away, even if its just for a 2nd round pick. We simply can’t have him as a option on this team if LD is hell bent on starting him.

So LD lectured Josh before practice yesterday.

“His shot selection was not very good. He was trying to do too much,” Drew said. “He admitted that was the case. He didn’t feel good about the way he played.”.

I woudnt be surprised to see Josh take 2 bad shots in the first 5 minutes of the game tonight, because he just doesn’t get it. 7 years in the league and a) he doesn’t know what a bad shot is or b) He knows but doesn’t care.

And I’m with northcyde. I’m a big fan of Horford, and I think he should be our only team captain. But he has to step it up and match Noah’s energy. Where’s the Al who almost single handedly help us rally and beat the Bulls in ATL this season?

And after 2 good games, I think Teagus is due for a sub par game tonight.

blogman,

I disagree with starting Collins. He is not a very good rebounder, and we need all the help we can get on the boards (we were outrebounded by almost 20 last game). Plus the Bulls do not play through Noah very much, so Collins wont have the same impact defensively like he did against Howard.

I would be ok with starting ZaZa, and Josh on Deng defensively might be worth a try, because Marvin has not been able to slow Deng down. But I would be concerned about Josh and his shot selection playing SF.

northcyde,

From ajc.com;

That the Hawks missed 51 shots, shooting 26-for-77, didn’t help their rebounding figures. Another factor, center Jason Collins noted, is the transition threat posed by Bulls guard Derrick Rose. The Hawks place such a priority on retreating on transition defense to slow the league MVP that it limits their offensive rebounding..

The Hawks have been doing it all year, so I’m not surprised. But LD and the guys need to realize that with Teague at PG, we have a better chance at getting back (compared to when Bibby was here). Crash the Board Hawks. Crash the Boards.

Check out Al’s nimbers
He shot 55.7% from the field during the regular season and is now shooting 39.6% during the 2011 playoffs
He averaged 18 points and shot 62% from the field against the Bulls in the 3 regular season games and is now averaging 7.5 points and shooting 36.8% from the field in the 2 playoff games against the Bulls….
Those are huge drops in offensive production and by the way he’s played PF during most of playoffs – his natural position. He’s also a two-time All Star.

By The Nimbers!

By the nimbers under the old NBA 5 games play offs format, the team that wins games 1 and 3 historically goes on to win the series.
That is under the premise that, by general consensus that the first games is stolen and home court is shifted back to the underdog team.

Since we have been under the 7 games format, you basically have two series within one. The first two games are crucial because they are played on the road for the underdog. If you steal one game there, when you return home it’s 0 – 0 and you now have a 5 games series, only now the underdog team has home court advantage.

So, theoretically it’s a 5 game series with the Hawks having home court advantage. To apply the old nimbers, the Hawks must win one of the next two and one on the road to avoid a game 7.

If we win games 3 and 4? It’s a wrap, because we can close it out in games 5, 6 or 7. Ok, win the next two and we can see the light at the end of round 2 tunnel and it will not be a train.

The difference in winning and losing game 2 was effort not superior talent. The Hawks are clearly the more talented team. If Josh can bridle his talent and his brains, that should be enough.

LARRY DREW FOR COACH OF THE YEAR. DREW IS A BETTER COACH THAN THIBIDEAU YET THIBIDEAU JUST WON COACH OF THE YEAR HONORS. IT TOOK A MIRACLE FOR THE BULLS TO WIN 60 GAMES BUT IT WAS NOTHING THAT THIBIEDEAU DID TO CAUSE THAT. I HEARD THIBIDEAU SAY IN A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT JEFF TEAGUE STARTED 7 GAMES THIS YEAR. I DONT REMEMBER TEAGUE STARTING 7 GAMES. OK. LETS SAY TEAGUE DID START 7 GAMES. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE HAWKS RECORD WAS FOR THOSE 7 GAMES. WERE THE HAWKS 7-0. LARRY DREW IS SOMEONE WHO IS NOT NECESSARILY A QUALIFIED COACH, ITS JUST THAT THE HAWKS BIGS ARE SO TALENTED THAT ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO MESS UP THE TALENT THAT THE HAWKS HAVE AND THE GUYS ON THE TEAM DECIDED THAT THEY WOULD WIN 44 GAMES AND THATS IT. THE HAWKS DID NOT MAKE ANY ATTEMPT TO WIN 50. THE HAWKS COULD HAVE EASILY WON 60 GAMES IF THEY MADE THE EFFORT, BUT THEY DIDNT WANT TO WIN ANY MORE THAN THEY DID. THE HAWKS UNDERACHIEVED AND THEY SIMPLY DONT CARE WHETHER THEY ACHIEVE SUCCESS OR NOT. ALL THE HAWKS WANT FROM MANAGEMENT IS THEIR PAYCHECKS. ITS EVIDENT IN THE WAY THEY PLAY BASKETBALL. I know a lot of people are getting nervous about tonights game against the Bulls. This is mainly because the Hawks are a #5 seed going up against a #1 seed in the Bulls. Listen Hawks fans not to take anything away from Tibideau (coach of the year) or Rose (this years MVP) or Bulls (#1 record in the NBA), the Bulls 2 years ago had a 20-62 record. Last year they were 41-41 with Derrick Rose in his second year. Last season out of 32 teams in the league the Bulls were in the middle of the pack and are not that good. The only reason why they won 62 games is because of Derrick Rose. Take Rose out of the Bulls equation and they are a 12-70 team. Also, the San Antonio Spurs had the #1 seed in the western conference and were eliminated against a more athletic, hungrier team in the Memphis Grizzlies. The only reason I’m saying that is if the Hawks play with a purpose tonight and sunday night and are all business and get those 2 W’s for the city of atlanta, the Hawks will be up 3-1 and be in position to close out the Bulls. THE HAWKS WILL CRUSH THE BULLS IN THE NEXT 2 GAMES AND ADVANCE TO THE EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS.

Hawks in 7, here’s why?

1. LD will devise a D to neutralize Rose. I suggest a zone blitz.
2. Hawks mentally/physically/spiritually tougher after Magic series.
3. Individual matchups are pretty even overall.
4. JJ’s playing better, his domination of Korver/Brewer is key.
5. Teague contributes after watching Rocky I, II, III, IV.
6. Damian ain’t scared to throw ‘dem bows.
7. Smoove/Deng is a good matchup, younger legs prevail in 7.
8. Horford has Noah’s number.
9. Big lineup will neutralize Noah, Thomas, Boozer.
10. Watson scares me.

I’m not really nervous about the game. Matter of fact, the only game I was kind of antsy on, was Game 1 of the Orlando series.

It’s just that certain people on this roster need to play better . . MUCH BETTER.

Last year, the problem people were JJ and to a lesser extent Jamal. They were the ones who either didn’t show up, or were wildly inconsistent. JJ especially was highly disappointing in the 2nd round last year.

This year, the people under the gun are Smith, Horford, and Marvin ( only because we need SOMETHING from that dude ). But Smith and Horford are key to this series if we want to advance. We can’t have them playing below average basketball.

As I said of Game 3 of the Orlando series, I will be HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED if we don’t win tonight. They’re the team that is supposed to be so great, and they look highly beatable right now. Like drmaryb said . . this is now a 5 game series. You take a 2 – 0 lead in a 5 game series, and you’ll win the series 95% of the time.

So essentially, if we hold serve at home, we should be able to close the Bulls out. All they have to do is give maximum effort, especially on the defensive end and on the boards. We can win a game in the 80s vs Chicago.

I’m wearing my red Josh Smith jersey around today, before I go into work, in support of #5. Here’s hoping he has a breakout game tonight.

Please play like Shawn Kemp . . and not like Rasheed Wallace.
