Chicago–Teague is the starter at point guard for Game 1.
“I’ve always had faith in this kid,” L.D. said today at shootaround at the United Center.
Teague joins the “regular” lineup with J.J., Marvin, Josh and Al.
It’s a tough situation for Teague. He’s suddenly elevated from part-time rotation guy to checking D-Rose on the road in the playoffs.
“I expect him to go out and be Jeff Teague,” Drew said. “He brings a unique package with his speed, his quickness, his ability to get into the paint. He’s a solid defensive player. I don’t care who put on Rose no one guy can stop him. It’s got to be total team effort.”
There is perhaps no more volatile subject among by blog people than Jeff Teague. The drama is no doubt influenced by the emotional subtext of Hawks’ fans futile and frustrating wait for a bona fide point guard.
Some of Teague’s fans have elevated him to near-mythical status. They seize on his good moments as proof of his untapped potential and cite L.D.’s lack of patience and trust to explain away the bad moments. This group reacts angrily to criticisms of Teague.
If Teague’s detractors acknowledge his good moments at all, they ask why there are not more of them. His poor performances are proof of his limited potential. Teague’s critics tell those in the first group to stop deluding themselves.
I’m exaggerating a bit in both cases but you get my point.
I’m still not sure about Teague. I’ve just always thought he deserves more burn because of his production and potential, the team’s weaknesses and the need for the Hawks to figure out if he’s their point guard going forward.
You’d like to say this is when we can finally find out about Teague but what would it really settle if he can’t get it done in this series?
If you like Teague now and he bombs, you can say he hasn’t been properly developed and shouldn’t be judged under these circumstances. If you’ve been skeptical he’s a player, a poor showing would be just another reason to believe the same. (Of course Teague also could play well and then all of my blog people would be happy.)
This is the hand Teague has been dealt. He faces a sizable deficit in talent and experience against D-Rose. There isn’t much in the way of past performance to make any prediction of how it will go: Teague was on the court with Rose for just 13 minutes during the three regular-season games.
“He’s guarded him before,” L.D. said. “This is not anything out of the ordinary. He has guarded some tough guys.”
The Hawks have focused much of their defensive preparation on pick-and-roll coverages. But D-Rose is a strong iso player, too, so there will be times when a Hawks defender must find some way to prevent Rose from getting to the basket.
“We are asking a lot for the guys that are guarding him to contain him,” Al said. “Obviously we are going to be there to help but the guy that is on the ball has to try to do the best job to keep Rose in front of him.”
More often than not, that guy is going to be Jeff Teague.
“He’s been in situations before where he hasn’t played much, and he has stepped in and answered the call,” Drew said. “I’m expecting the same thing.”

LD does need to stop lying about Teague though.
If you have confidence in a player, you play that player. You don’t let him accumulate DNPs by the boatloads. Drew, if you didn’t think he was ready, just say so. But don’t keep telling that lie that “you always had faith in this kid.” No you didn’t.

Teague just needs to be solid. He doesn’t need to score a lot of points. Just give us timely offense, along with everything he has on defense. Deflect some passes. Get a steal or two. Since he has a knock for running down people and blocking shots, maybe give us one of those plays too.
If Teague plays 16 minutes . . and gives us 7 points – 3 assists – 2 rebounds – 1 steal – 1 blk . . and keeps Rose from going completely off while he’s in the game . . that’s all we can ask for.
No one should expect this kid to score 10+ points in any game this series. If he does that, that’s like ice cream and cake. But those types of expectations should not be placed on him like that.
Just play your role Teague. And if you play well, hopefully your coach will reward you with extended minutes, especially if Jamal is struggling at PG.

I think Jeff will do well in this series. He needs to pull rose to one side of the floor and trap him to get the ball out of his hands. On offensive Teague is just as fast or fast than Rose, Jeff control the tempo and push when needed, use all the non-believers/sports commentators words as motivation tools.

Teague will be our hero for this series. I hate saying it but Kirk had to get injured for us to have a chance in this series. Kirk played good d on rose the first time we played them but then got torched the last two. Teague, if anyone remembers, scored about twenty points in the fourth quarter of a game against the bulls which is impressive even against their bench.
Teague has the capabilities and speed to give us a chance.

Teague is alot fresher than most anybody on either side that is going to play alot. DRose is banged up, and Teague is fresh. Teague has potential, don’t let anybody fool you. He could do anything from equal DRose tonite because he’s healthy and fresher, to completely bomb.
I think he will probably play a little, LD will get nervous and pull him, and he’ll probably rarely see the court again for over 2-3 minutes at the time.
Jamal will get destroyed at the Point, and LD will blame it on a lack of hard fouls on the interior.

Hawks in 7, here’s why?
1. LD will devise a D to neutralize Rose. I suggest a zone blitz.
2. Hawks mentally/physically/spiritually tougher after Magic series.
3. Individual matchups are pretty even overall.
4. JJ’s playing better, his domination of Korver/Brewer is key.
5. Teague contributes after watching Rocky I, II, III, IV.
6. Damian ain’t scared to throw ‘dem bows.
7. Smoove/Deng is a good matchup, younger legs prevail in 7.
8. Horford has Noah’s number.
9. Big lineup will neutralize Noah, Thomas, Boozer.
10. Watson scares me.

Darrell . . Collins shouldn’t even play this series. The matchup and focus are different. The Bulls aren’t going to toss the ball down to Noah to let him work on Collins. And Noah is way too active, fast, and athletic for Collins.
When the Hawks won the only game vs the Bulls, it was all due to the work and rebounding that Horford was doing while mainly playing center.
What we need, is for Horford and Smith to collectively get 20+ rebounds a game. Jason Collins has never kept active bigs off of the boards.

PF may be Horford’s natural position, but he plays better at center. He couldn’t even take Brandon Bass last series and shot well below his season averages while playing PF. He’s played against Noah for dang near 7 years in practice at Florida and in the NBA. He can go on Noah.
Horford and Smith just can’t be afraid to mix it up. Look for one of them to really come up big in this series.

Hero Ball!
One thing we don’t need is: hero ball!
Let’s play together and help on the glass and defense.
Sounds like Mr. Larry “Flexible” Drew is pulling out Mr. Woodson’s
philosophy of “gang rebounding”.
Last season we were among the top 4 teams in rebounding in the rgular season. Let’s get back to some old habits and stick the guards and wings in there on the boards. Josh was the lead dog on cleaning the glass, so, let’s do it again.
Play that Lenny Wilkens “swarming defense”. I haven’t seen that since the old fella left. I will repeat and NEVER forget Pippen’s comments back in the day after he and MJ getting run out of The Omni one night,
Scottie said, “They were everywhere, swarming, we couldn’t put the ball on the floor and we couldn’t make a play with any dribble penetration!”
________________
That, my fellas does not require any skills, just effort, heart and desire.
Just Do It! I don’t give a rat’s tail about the offense. As long as we score one point more than them? I’ll take 45 – 44. If we come out aggressive on defense, the referees will adjust and swallow some whistles.
Winning teams don’t run in the playoffs, it will be a half-court contest for all the Teague is fast sayers. I say don’t let Rose run either.
Trap his azz with 3 defenders in the back court! He will turn it over more times than not. You only get 8 seconds to cross half court.
Make somebody else beat you. Don’t come out, stand around and watch Rose play basketball. It’s just basketball, not world-peace!

LD has more confidence in Teague than Woody did. Did he develop that confidence enough during the regular season, probably not. Well, it’s Tom Brady time for Teague. He doesn’t have to worry about Bibby or Hinrich taking his minutes. Either the young fella makes a name for himself or he has to hear the Denny Green echoes of they are who we thought they are
I think LD has a trick or two up his sleeve…Damien Wilkins has some fouls to give if needed. You can play small against the Bulls…especially if Boozer is playing hurt.

We still have a solid 8 man rotation. ZaZa, Jamal, and Wilkens off the pine = Solid.
And you can win in the NBA with an 8 man rotation = 30 minutes per player
A 7 man rotation, and your getting in trouble = 34+ minutes per guy.
And I know some guys will get 40 and some 20

Teague time was during the regular season. Now it’s just an experiment, with major reprocussions & consequencies. LD should have found out wha this kid could do during the regular season; a time he could coach him up, build his confidence and identify his real skill sets, that would help win games.
He should know what Teague could offer. Maybe he can’t slow Rose down, would not really be surprised by that at this point. But maybe by now his end to end speed would surprise Rose & wear him down, maybe that little floater would actually have chance to go in at this point in the season vs every attempt is a pray. Take the rookie Revis Vazquez with Memphis, Conley picked up early fouls and he kept the pedal to the medal against the Spurs & Toney Parker. Coach Hollins gave a 6′5″ rookie a shot because he had seen the kids game grow…. Teague?????
Now LD wants to hand out fake platitudes: “I expect him to go out and be Jeff Teague,” Drew said. “He brings a unique package with his speed, his quickness, his ability to get into the paint. He’s a solid defensive player. I don’t care who put on Rose no one guy can stop him. It’s got to be total team effort.”
He had those assets when he left Wake, speed, quickness, defense & ability. How have they been used on the NBA level? I am not advocating Teague as the answer, nor is Hinrich, I am just saying the sample size is low & we don’t know what his real strengths are after 2 NBA seasons.
We are in the 2nd round, against the bulls with best record in NBA & Rose MVP at point & you want to go to the LAB and EXPERIMENT, but in the first round he gets a couple of DNP’s against Jameer Nelson!!
LD expects him to be Jeff Teague…..what, exactly is that???

@SteveW – We wouldn’t get Horford & Noah. BK would have been run out of town if he didn’t try to get a PG AND a C in that draft. If he got 2 bigs, he would have never heard the end of it. Remember, this was after the Marvin draft & before we got Bibby. The T. Lue + Royal Ivey (5 minute starter) experiment wasn’t working.
With the 3rd pick, we got whoever we wanted (except Oden & Durant.) The other pick was to fill the other slot. I do wonder if BK would have been fired that summer if he had the 2nd pick. Marvin was supposed to be close to Durant. Could BK have gotten away with picking yet another SF with wingspan?
Easy to say a few years after the draft, but much tougher at the moment.

I heard someone say a few months ago that the worse injuries are non-contact injuries. Hinrich says that he was hurt before he landed… a non-contact injury. Sounds like Speedy will play against the Bulls before Hinrich. That’s oaky, we have Pape Sy to come and and do his Mario West imitation.
Teague may very well get the old Jason Collins treatment… plays the first 8-9 minutes of each half and then sits comfortably on the bench. Ultimately, rebounding will decide how well the Hawks play in this series… rebounding and keeping the Bulls from scoring 60+ points in the paint.

From the previous blog;
Sleepy,
Jamal only took 4 shots in that game, but whose fault was that? More often than not (in the regular season), Jamal struggled when he played significant minutes at PG, because he is a scorer first, not someone who runs the offense.
And in that game where the Hawks rallied to beat the Bulls, Jamal went 5-13, and finished with 12 points, 4 assists, 2 steals in 31 minutes. The Hawks won 83-80 because of defense. We limited the Bulls to 30 second half points.

Teague is on a short leash…count on it.
Collins get less PT this series and Marvin extends his minutes….his success should depend on how well he keeps Deng from getting hot.
Joe will have his hands full with Rose. Perhaps we let Rose get his points, and shut down the rest of the roster.
And Game 1 is a must to show we are serious about removing last years’ train wreck. Respect comes to those who compete. Last year, they didn’t compete.

“Darrell . . Collins shouldn’t even play this series. The matchup and focus are different. The Bulls aren’t going to toss the ball down to Noah to let him work on Collins. And Noah is way too active, fast, and athletic for Collins.”
“When the Hawks won the only game vs the Bulls, it was all due to the work and rebounding that Horford was doing while mainly playing center.”
Actually Zaza and Pachulia combined for 37 minutes and Horford played 41 minutes mostly at power forward.
“What we need, is for Horford and Smith to collectively get 20+ rebounds a game. Jason Collins has never kept active bigs off of the boards.”
* the blowouts come from Smith being 6′8 and 6′10 Gibson or 7′0 Noah or 6′9.5 Boozer reaching right over Smith, pushing him under the basket, pushing him out of the way like Collins did to Rose etc. Josh Smith is better at the 3 or off the bench to go right at Deng.
* Collins started the 2nd half when Noah exited and we went on a 13 pt run to get back into the game. We did not have Josh Smith. Collins pins, Noah, Horford grabs the board, he and Josh take off sort of like the 80s Showtime Lakers with 6′8 Magic. They dont have nothing they go to post ups, of which we have 3. smdh
Josh should be running out in front and finishing at the rim. Trying to foul out Luol “I play 40+ minutes and am a major cog in the team as I have no backup” Deng not trying to outmuscle Boozer for petty rebounds and block Derrick Rose (who is going to draw many fouls on Smith for the 3rd game btw) #forestfromthetrees MC

Man, I can’t believe the 2nd round playoff series is becoming a referendum on Jeff Teague. This isn’t the summer league… if he can’t cut it, keep working down the bench until you find someone who can. Remember the Portland game, JT played well because he was on the floor at the end of the first quarter when he scored 6 points in under 20 secs.

Sorry, but that is a tall task to ask of Teague. That being said, he’s the best option because Crawford plays almost no defense. Gonna be a tall order without Heinrich. The Hawks mathc up well everywhere else, but guarding Rose is a glaring weakness. Prove us naysayers wrong, Teague!

From the previous blog:
“I would hate to be in Teague’s shoes. If you play well, you help the idiot who has tried everything in their power to destroy you.
But if you don’t play well, you prove the idiot “right”.
I’d go out and play great, and trust people have enough sense to see that LD’s an incompetent coach.”
I agree. It never benefits any player to not play his best. If I were Teague, I’d ball out in these playoffs, fight for the starting job over the summer and in training camp, and if LD (or his successor) still insisted on burying him on the bench, I’d demand a trade by December.
Teague is going to play well in this series. Maybe not well enough for the Hawks to win, but he’s going to play well.

The Hawks should go with the big line up of either Collins or Zaza at center. The only game that we won against the Bulls was when Josh was hurt and we were forced to go big and put Al at the 4. The other 2 games when we went small we got blown out.

Have you been watching the same Hawks team I have? Really, when everyone is telling you our offense is non-existant? When CHI wins only 18 more games than we did this season? Did we really compete well against them this year? We had that one surge of a comeback…that’s all we can hang our hat on.
But Boozer is hurt, and Rose may be cautious, but I can’t see our Hawks being as good as CHI. Nothing matches, offensively or defensively.

“You’d like to say this is when we can finally find out about Teague but what would it really settle if he can’t get it done in this series?
If you like Teague now and he bombs, you can say he hasn’t been properly developed and shouldn’t be judged under these circumstances. If you’ve been skeptical he’s a player, a poor showing would be just another reason to believe the same. ”
True.
As a proud member of Team A (the group that says Teague has untapped potential and his inconsistency is primarily a result of poor coaching decisions) that is exactly what I will say if Teague doesn’t play well. It will entirely be LD’s fault.
With that said, he will play well. Will he dominate the game? No. But I think he will generally play well on D — as well as anyone can play on the MVP of the league — and he will make enough plays on O to make his presence on the court worthwhile.

Here’s a prediction for tonight’s game.
Hawks come out strong and play the Bulls even in the first quarter. They actually manage to take a lead early in the 2nd. By the end of the 2nd, the Bulls erase the lead and lead by two or three at halftime. Hawks hang in there throughout the 3rd. In the 4th, LD insists on playing Jamal at point guard against Rose, the Bulls pull away, and the Hawks end up losing by 15.

ND I disagree. Yes, he has not been developed, but hey I will say he has to prove himself to everyone else. He has done enough for me to jump on his bandwagon, now he has to prove he belongs to everyone else. We did not know Rondo existing until the playoffs, so Jeff has to do his thing.
The worst thing LD can do is play JT six minutes first half (i.e Denver, Milwaukee, etc games) then play him token minutes second half. He needs to be on the court EVERY minute Rose is on the court.

JEFF TEAGUE HAS GOTTEN SO FEW MINUTES THIS SEASON THAT HE CIRCLES THE DAYS ON HIS CALENDER WHEN HE ACTUALLY GOT TO BE IN AN NBA GAME FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES!!!!!!
LD should’ve TRAINED Teague for THIS moment. OTHER teams have BACKUPS that come in and KILL IT! Look at the Grizzlies! Look at Gary Neal hitting that game tying shot for the Spurs! Teague COULD NEVER hope to do that from how little we used him!!! I REALLY hope Jeff is prepared, SORRY that Jeff has to play with a team that doesn’t do business right work on rookies, but IT’S YOUR TIME, SHOW ME TONIGHT BABY!!!! GO HAAAAAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s about the Team
If the the Hawks fall behind it’s Teague’s fault
- no -
if the team falls behind, it’s the team’s fault.
If Josh takes a bad shot, it’s Josh’s fault
- sort of -
LD should share the blame, but that’s on the individual.
If Al sits the whole 2nd qtr because he has two fouls,
that’s LD’s fault.
- of course -
The team was penalized by their leader & decision maker.
But my point remains;
we put too much emphasis on who plays:
where, when, how, why, & how much.
Rather than the “team won” [or lost].
Not to disagree with Mary Ellen,
but to amend what she said earlier:
“put the “best” five players that -play together- out there”
and let’s play.
(+/-) stats for one player are misleading;
we should focus more on (+/-) for five player combos.
What does this have to do with Teague?
He does not have to beat Rose !
The Hawks [team] must defeat the [Bulls] team !
Sorry, Bulls in (5).
Thibs COY over LD.
I just destroyed my whole dissertation.

MC: Jeff Teague will play better than we expect with lots of surprises. This Kids deserves a shot at breaking through the Mike Woodson era of not trusting and playing Rookies or Sophmores. Originally I did not know Jeff Teague until he came to the Hawks.
Jeff will be s solid if not great point guard in this league. The Hawks have better give him the chance next year and let him play through his lack of PT struggles or allow some other team to benefit from his future progress…
This series will prove that we have found our Chris Paul and besides, Teague is a better defender.

Teague seize the moment?
He seized it about 5 times during the season. Even brought over almost all of the doubters to his side.
And then LD would snatch it away.
I think if Teague plays like DRose – which he won’t, LD will pull him all during this series so he (LD) won’t look like such a horrible coach for not playing him all along..
I think LD makes decisions on factors other than winning sometimes.

Trading the 2007 #11 pick and the 2008 first rounder to move up 2 spots to get Noah would not have been a bad deal in my opinion. And if the Hawks had done that, I would be a lot more receptive to trading Smoove than I am now, since his help defense responsibilities would be covered by Noah and he would have no choice but to play SF.

It’s all in who Teague plays with. He can just be himself with the starters, instead of trying to actually run the team. With the starters, all he has to do is make the CORRECT play when it’s called for.
But his energy out top along with JJ seems to make our perimeter defense look much more active.
We’ll see if the game changes once Teague goes out and Jamal runs the point. Hopefully Jamal will provide the points to offset any transgressions on defense.
Too bad JJ messed up the lob to Smith, because Teague caused that turnover.

Good strong drive by Joe to draw the foul. Too often in the regular season in situations when he could drive and draw contact in key momentum shifting situations he settles for jumpers. That time he drove and drew contact. Successful trips to the line are a reliable way to shift momentum back in your favor.
As formidable as the Bulls looked during that run, the Hawks are still up by 7 with a chance to extend it back to 9. That is a good sign.

Bull Crock!
As the Bulls prepare to end the Atlanta Hawks’ season in the next week or so, I’m still not sure which helps the Bulls more:
The Hawks with Kirk Hinrich too injured to play or the Bulls with Carlos Boozer too injured to play?
With Hinrich down because of a hamstring injury, the Hawks have to start Jeff Teague. With a straight face. Teague had the job a while ago, then lost it, and now gets it back by default. Put Teague in a starting lineup that already includes center Jason Collins, and you’ve got two guys who are averaging fewer points than Keith Bogans and barely as many rebounds. Combined, I’m talking. Combined.
Starting with fewer scoring options against the best defensive team in the league is no way to go through the playoffs, son. Without Hinrich, the Hawks lose the one defender who might stand a chance against Derrick Rose and a guy who can organize an offense. Without Boozer, meanwhile, the Bulls lose nothing on defense and just a fake inside presence on offense of late.
Boozer’s toughest matchup seems to be the first eight minutes. If he gets off, he has a game. If not, he might as well be resting his turf-toe injuy so he can make a difference against Miami or Boston.
Because this playoff series is all over and because that’s when Boozer has to show up.
Yeah, I realize the Hawks upset Orlando in six games and saved the Bulls’ signing affidavits against Magic center Dwight Homicide. I’ll give Atlanta credit for making the all-or-nothing Magic look bad.
But sorry, there’s no way the Hawks can stay with Rose short of, well, homicide. And the Bulls just don’t let opponents shoot against them. Not more than one game in a row, anyway.
While the Hawks have quality players in Horford, Joe Johnson and Josh Smith, in my world the hood ornament for the Hawks is former Bull Jamal Crawford. He might be the worst defensive player in the league, maybe in the league’s history. He doesn’t even try. It’s as if he wants the Bulls to score just so he can get the ball back and jack up another shot.
That, see, is the other part of the Hawks’ weakness: stupid or undisciplined shots, take your pick. Sure, the Hawks can shoot lights out, and they probably will for one game, the one win they’ll get in the next eight days. They shot lights out in that big comeback against the Bulls the first time the teams met, but that was the only half of basketball the Hawks took from the Bulls this season.
Look, the Hawks finished near the bottom of the league in blocking shots and forcing turnovers in the regular season and ranked in the bottom half of the league in opponents’ field-goal percentage. Oh, and the Hawks aren’t much for offensive rebounds. The Pacers ranked high in most of those categories during the regular season and frustrated the Bulls terribly by winning some of those areas in the playoffs.
The only threat is playoff irritant Zaza Pachulia, and we’re talking physical threat, not offensive. Pachulia is averaging a foul about every five minutes in the playoffs, in case you’re wondering who Atlanta’s Jeff Foster might be.
Providing Rose stays healthy and Bulls players aren’t big fans of Atlanta’s world-class strip clubs, the only way this goes beyond five is if the Bulls remain too stupid or too stubborn to play the first half. That inability to prepare to play before the fourth quarter forced the Bulls to work harder against the Pacers than they should’ve had to. They figured it out by Game 5 and got some needed rest. I’m betting they figure it out quicker against the Hawks, especially if they rest Boozer.

The bank has been open for the Hawks in this quarter. I’ve been impressed with the way they have come back with key buckets whenever the Bulls have looked to cut down the lead. These last two minutes are crucial though. The Hawks got off to a 9-0 start; if they can stretch their current 6 point lead back to 9 or 10 that would be huge for them.

The defense sure looked a lot worse to finish that quarter without Josh and Al. They really have a huge impact on the game, even when they are not taking shots. With them out, the Bulls were able to score fairly easily. Part of that has to do with the fact that Jamal was getting caught on a lot of screens, but other than that, the bulls scored primarily in the paint.

It feels like we are losing. The reasons we will get blown out in the 2nd half are because Marvin can’t do anything with Deng and Jamal can not even guard Korver when he is in. This is sad, Teague is the least of our problems

Jamal was guarding Rose on the last couple of plays because Teague cannot guard Rose any better. Teague looked like he was making Rose work hard in the first quarter because of good, quick shows and good help defense, but with Josh and Al on the bench (especially Josh), it gets much more difficult to cover for Teague.

Why do you even post on the site if you don’t watch the game? It is clear that Teague switched off on Korver because Jamal was having trouble keeping up off those screens and Korver got nothing else after that. Jamal hurts just as much as helps because he is just horrible on D, but actually as long as he just plays way off of Rose and Rose misses he has a better chance with him than chasing Korver off of screens

Well, it’s not like every decision LD has ever made was the most sensible one.
In this case, Rose was ice cold from the outside and the Bulls were making a concerted effort to run plays for Korver while Jamal was attempting to guard him, so the decision made some sense.

^^With that said, of course, playing Jamal on Rose is not a go-to strategy for more than two minutes or so at a time. LD does a lot of things like this — sitting Al for an entire quarter, playing Hilton Armstrong on Dwight, holding Smoove and Al out of the game at the same time, etc. — which seem to contradict common sense but work for a while. The trick is to understand when it’s about to stop working and make the adjustment pre-emptively instead of waiting for it to stop working to make the change.

Al with 3 fouls refusing to contest the Rose layup. That 2 foul rule cuts both ways. It is dumb to sit a guy for the entire first half if he picks up 2 fouls, but if you let him play and he gets the 3rd and ends up being tentative in the 2nd half as a result, that doesn’t work in your favor either.
Hawks need a good play out of this timeout. I would suggest a post up for Smoove seeing as how he is starting to drift to the perimeter.

We should try to get Horford going in the post against Noah. It looked like he was bullying Noah around down there on that last possession, which forced the Bulls to double and got us a good shot out of the possession. Even if Al doesn’t have success down there on his first attempt, it’s worth a try. It would put less pressure on Joe who is having to do everything on the offensive end right now.

Even minus Hinrich, the guards have played pretty well.
Joe’s easily the only reason why the Hawks are still within striking distance.
Jamal’s been pretty decent, although his defense just kills us.
Teague’s played well enough for the Hawks to come in Chicago and win this game. His defense has been pretty solid on Rose. Rose has gotten most of his buckets in transition.
Al – Josh need to step their ish up.

Another positive for the Hawks is that we will go into the fourth quarter without anyone in foul trouble. Al and Josh both have 3 fouls, but they can play aggressively now since there is only one quarter left in this game. Also, the Bulls will most likely start the fourth with their bench, which means we have a shot at extending this lead. I’m guessing Deng will probably play the rest of the game, but Rose will most likely get a short rest. We need to take advantage during that time.

He was fine on D in this game. But he’s gotta get his head in the game on O. I don’t mind a couple of jumpers early in the game to test the waters and see if it’s falling. But if it’s not — and it hasn’t been for a couple of weeks now — dude has to find other ways to contribute offensively.

The other scary thing is that with Teague on the floor, you now have 3 ballhandlers who can get to their spots on the floor to take a shot.
The Hinrich injury may have been a blessing in disguise, because we may have found a super quick lineup to throw at people, with Teague – Jamal – JJ.
JJ was fantastic tonight though. And is the 3 pointer back? Wow.
I guess it’s the headband. He’s been shooting a lot better since he started wearing the headband. But he’s traditionally played well in Chicago.
SMH @ Derrick Rose . . what are you thinking man? The game is over, and you turn your ankle on a meaningless play?

Teague is the MOTOR under the hood of a Bentley!
Rose and Boozer tried, but they hurt man. Even if healthy, I just got a feeling The Hawks win anyway. Rose had a cortisone shot to numb the ankle before the game, but you could tell he didn’t feel his foot and didn’t trust that very, awfully sore ankle.
Teague broke his ankle down, if Jeff had a deft cross-over? He would be an Elite and unstoppable force on the fast offensive game he has.
Next year, watch out for this kid. I never saw him play enough to have an opinion. All I knew was he never played for some strange reason. I trusted Drew knew what he was doing there. Now?

Whats next? Dallas taking game 1 in LA?
Im so freaking proud of Teague. yea he had a few cues on defense that he let go…but his overall performance was very good. I wont say outstanding, but very acceptable. You have to think now…
Bulls:
- Number 1 team in the Eastern conference.
- Number 3 team in the NBA. (opinion)
- Best defense in the NBA.
- MVP Rose
- Derrick Rose (mention twice..that good)
Also Teague had only 1 turnover. You can’t forget this is the number 1 defense in the NBA.
Our goal now…is being consistent and focused. We can not let this win go to our heads. We have to play like we want it more then the Bulls. We need it.

but after smith returned, he actually made some crucial defensive plays, grabbed some big boards, made a big pass, and even knocked down one of those jumpers.
he did get ‘yammed on’ as someone put it twice though.
doesn’t matter.
1-0.

this isn’t a knock on hinrich here.
hinrich played great D on Nelson in the last round.
but, based off what i saw in the regular season, i don’t think he’d be as good as teague is on d rose.
d rose had ‘moments’, but teague never really let him get in much of a rhythm. if i’m the hawks, i give those jumpers to rose all series. let him get his 50 knockin down jumpshots. it’s when he gets into the paint when he gets everybody else involved and the game gets chaotic.

My God it could not have turned out any better for the Hawks with Rose turning his ankle in the last few seconds lol. What a game by JJ, JT, and JC. Imagine what we could do if Smoove would grow a brain and stop shooting jumpers and play his outstanding defense and drive to the basket. It was the only pimple on a beautiful win. Damn Smoove would you just stop it. Stop being so stubborn. JUST STOP AND WE MAY BEAT MEMPHIS TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. WHO WOULD HAVE EVER THOUGHT THAT WAS POSSIBLE

I hereby declare Jeff Teague a basketball Player.
The debate ceases…Now.
If LD refuses to play him from this point;
it should be grounds for immediate termination.
Earlier this eve, I set forth, that this was Teaguer’s opportunity.
At least one blogger thought I was too severe.
The young man has earned his wings with tonite’s performance.
Yes, he must continue his ascent each day from here on out,
but he has burst through some sort of imaginary boundary that’s
been holding him back.
Coaches can no longer restrain him.
Congrats Young Mr. Teague. / Our Hawks have found a another player.

Why does Josh insist on shooting those J’s? I understand those toward the end of the clock but there’s no other acceptable situation in which Josh pulls up from outside 15ft. With guys like Joe, Jamal, Marvin, even Al who all shoot decently from the outside, and the fact that the Hawks have not post presence, why would Josh waste possessions by taking potshots from the perimeter? It would even be good if he would at least take a dribble and change the shot from 19ft to 14ft.
Please, Smoove. Just hang up the outside J until after we trade you next year, and just focus on playing D, rebounding, and getting the ball in the paint. PLEASE…

great win. Teague nice uptempo player. When a player plays like that when the bright lights are on you know he can play. I want more. I dont want to take the foot off of the neck of the Bulls. I want payback from all those years the Bulls beat the Hawks. Should be no reason why Hawks cant beat the Bulls. They played them very well defensively and Joe J earned his money and Teague did good things and even Zaza contributed

I agree that there’s no reason the Hawks can’t beat a one-man squad like Chicago, record notwithstanding. I don’t think we’re going to get 54 combined points from JJ and JC every game, and I certainly know we’re not going to keep shooting that well. That said, if those ATL players keep their confidence and heads about them, they got the talent to hang with anyone in the East.

I seem to recall you constantly bashing two players on this team: Josh Smith and Jeff Teague.
So, I don’t think you’re in the position to be calling anybody else Jeff Teague’s worse enemy.
And before this goes any further, I’ll go ahead and eat my share of the crow right now. I did come on this blog when the Hawks were up 3-1 on the Magic and speculated that the Hawks wouldn’t matchup as well with the Bulls. But, for one game, they proved me wrong.

Great win by the Hawks tonight! Its nice to see our offense ran in the 4th quarter, something we haven’t see all that much, even against the Magic last series.
Has any interviewer ever asked LD about why Josh keeps shooting his jumpers? I would be interested to hear what Josh’s logic is behind it. I thought it was great to hear LD in the huddle tell his players to take SMART shots, you know who he was talking to.
I have officially given up on Marvin 100%, he looked even more clueless and pathetic out there than when he was a rookie. His D is OK, and last year he had a jumper, but not anymore. It looks like he has completely regressed, he has no place on this team. I would rather see us start Damien and guard Deng than Marvin.
Tonight proved that if we play to our abilities, we can beat anyone in the league! Its refreshing to know that. Now we just need to do it consistently.

From RotoWorld Fantasy League:
>> All NBA Fantasy Player News
Johnson scores 34 points; Hawks take 1-0 lead
Joe Johnson (G/F) – Atlanta Hawks
(Mon, May 2 – 11:33pm ET)
Joe Johnson hit 12-of-18 shots (and all five 3-point attempts) for 34 points in the Hawks’ Game 1 win over the Bulls, and also added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
He played like a ‘max contract’ player on Monday, and while he fell into the Hawks’ pattern of jacking up bad shots at times, some of them fell and as you can see he was amazingly efficient tonight. Josh Smith stood outside and played the pick-and-pop game to his peril, hitting just 3-of-11 shots for eight points, but enough was working for Atlanta tonight to wake the nation up — Atlanta is for real (we think).
Teague’s defense the difference in Game 1 win
Jeff Teague (G) – Atlanta Hawks
(Mon, May 2 – 11:22pm ET)
Jeff Teague started at PG and checked the presumed NBA MVP Derrick Rose in Monday’s Game 1 win, neutralizing him in one-on-one defensive situations, and also added 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting with two rebounds, five assists, one steal, and just one turnover.
Rose hit just 11-of-27 shots and many of his makes came without Teague on him, as Teague’s quickness and athleticism kept Rose from demanding entrance into the paint. Teague still made a handful of mental mistakes, but he got the game ball from Larry Drew and was the difference in the win. Look for the Bulls to employ a more creative game plan in Game 2 to free up Rose, and also play on Teague’s mental lapses.

Zaza has become a better interior defender than Josh.
Josh’s block’s are down, and he’s still a good perimeter defender,
but when he tried to guard Boozer, he got his back-side whupped.
*[don't anyone say...it's affected by where he plays on offense]
*(where one plays on offense has no effect on whom you guard)
Back to Zaza – he is more physical than Josh.
[who has turned into a finesse (sissy) player]
Zaza and / or Collins give us a true Big.
One or the other needs to be on the floor;
- guarding Boozer – in this series.
When Josh is on the bench – he cannot take bad shots.

For those of us on here who has called for Jeff Teague to be this TEAM PG early in this season and for Woody(Last Year) to give Teague some playing time………TONITE WAS JUSTICE SERVED. I remember last year against Boston when Teague scored 26 points but Woody never gave him playing time after that game. So Young Mr. Teague, keep you head level, work hard and show the rest of these FANS what all your SUPPORTERS who clammer for you to be this team starting PG. As I’ve said so meany times on here, under Woody & Woddy Lite, Rondo would have been RIDING THE PINES under these TWO SUPPOSEDLY COACHES. ALL WE WERE SAYING, IS GIVE JEFF TEAGUE A CHANCE. Capt Kirk is not the PG to start for this team. At best he is a player to come off the bench to give Jeff Teague a breather. He is not quick enough to handle Rose. Go HAWKS and GO JEFF TEAGUE! Win the second game and come home up 2-0. ATL MAKE THE ROOF @ Phillips Area TREMBLE ALL NITE WHEN THE SERIES MOVES BACK TO DA ATL!
