7:30 p.m. UPDATE: Hawks say Kirk Hinrich is doubtful to play in series vs. Bulls because of “significant strain” to hamstring.
Kirk Hinrich had an MRI this afternoon. The Hawks haven’t released the results yet but say they expect to announce something today. I’m told it didn’t look good for Hinrich last night but there was more optimism today because he was moving better.
If Hinrich can’t play or is very limited, the Hawks are in serious trouble against the Bulls. I’m assuming they can’t suddenly change their offensive habits to the point where they can score efficiently against the league’s best D. They need Hinrich for scoring, too, because if you are going to be a jump-shooting team it’s best to send out as many jump shooters as possible, especially one capable of getting his own.
So it seems Atlanta’s best chance in this series is to play rugged defense and pull out some grinding games. They did that against the Magic but the Dwight Defense is null against Chicago, which plays through D-Rose instead of the post. Among Atlanta’s guards, Hinrich is their best chance to slow D-Rose–if not by staying in front of him, then by going under screens and then recovering to challenge his (so-so) jump shot. As Hinrich showed during the Orlando series, he’s pretty good at that.
Hinrich’s availability is so crucial, in fact, that L.D. and his staff couldn’t really make a lot of decisions on their game plans today because they didn’t know if they’d have Hinrich.
“It certainly changes things,” Drew said. “Hopefully he will be able to go but if he’s not we will have to make an adjustment. Not knowing what we will do at that point, we will talk about it as a staff and then make a decision. We are looking at matchups to see what will work best for us and not really knowing if Kirk can go, can’t go, play some or can’t play at all—a lot of that will change things.”
If Hinrich can’t play or is ineffective, the other options to defend Rose are Teague, J.J., Jamal, and Damien.
L.D. hasn’t put much trust in Teague all season and now would be asking him to guard the best offensive point guard in the league.
“We’ve been talking to Teague already, getting his mind prepared,” Jamal said. “He understands the challenge at hand. I think he’s prepared himself for the opportunity. I think he got a little down when he was not paying as much. Sometimes things work out in strange ways. Now he gets his change to play.”
J.J. doesn’t like checking points and has proven to be effective at it only in small stretches. Plus the Hawks are going to need all the points they can get and tasking J.J. with chasing Rose through screens and also carrying his usual offensive burden is a lot to ask.
“I am sure through course of the series he will spend time on [Rose],” Drew said. “There is a high probability a few guys will see time on him. [The Bulls] put you in a situation where they do force you to switch. Joe has guarded point guards before; he’s comfortable defending point guards. Hopefully it won’t be much. I’d like to keep him off of him.”
Damien generally has fared better against opponents he can body up rather than those who require quick feet. Jamal had his moments playing acceptable team defense against the Magic but clearly this is not an assignment for him.
The pick-and-roll alignment the Hawks used against Jameer and the Magic probably doesn’t make sense. Noah isn’t a big threat on the roll–he’s scored 1.09 points per possession, according to Synergy Sports Technology, but only had 61 attempts. Rose is generally less concerned with kicking out to 3-point shooters than with getting to the basket for scores (he was third among point guards in field-goals per game at the rim with 3.8 and averaged five against the Hawks) or drawing fouls (.35 free-throw rate overall, .32 against the Hawks).
And, anyway, Rose has been much more efficient scoring in isolation (1.09 points per possession, ranked No. 4 in the league) than on screen-rolls (.87 ppp, ranked 45th). It could get ugly for the Hawks if the Bulls clear out for Rose and an Atlanta guard is forced to defend him in space.
There’s some sentiment in the Hawks’ locker room to play a zone against the Bulls. Good luck keeping the Bulls off the glass with that strategy. They were the fourth-best offensive rebounding team this season and they hammered the Hawks on the board in all three meetings this season.
“We have to come up with a game plan to try to slow down the potential MVP,” L.D. said. “It won’t be an easy job; it’s going to be tough. He’s seen probably every conceivable defense there is. One guy won’t do it. It will take a total team effort.”
True, but that effort would appear to be doomed without Hinrich.

Even if Hinrich is OK, the Hawks will still need Teague to step up. I am not sure why Drew has not used Teague more often. Teague is just as quick as Rose, but he does turn the ball over more and doesn’t play consistent D… but it’s good enough. But how can Teague get any on the job training and learn from such mistakes if he never plays? That is what the regular season is for, and Drew decided to play JJ and Jamal extended minutes instead. The Hawks (coaches) never seem to fully utilize the team’s talents.

“Jamal had his moments playing acceptable team defense against the Magic but clearly this is not an assignment for him. ”
I seem to recall the Bulls blowing the 2nd regular season matchup wide open in the 3rd quarter in large part because Jamal was playing point guard matched up on Rose and did absolutely nothing to slow him down. Something tells me this isn’t going to stop LD from continuing to roll with Jamal at PG for extended stretches in this series.
I have no problem with playing Jamal for extensive minutes in this series, particularly if he’s hitting and the big guys are having trouble scoring, but it’s gotta be at the 2, not at the 1. Jamal on Rose is a recipe for disaster.

A zone may not be a bad idea for stretches at a time. I think a better idea, though, is one I saw a team use against Chicago earlier this year in a game I saw on WGN (I forget the opponent; maybe the Bucks?) In that game, the opposing point guard was checking Rose man to man, but they used Keith Bogans’ man as a sort of shadow to follow Rose around and disrupt his passing lanes. It wasn’t a true double team since the object wasn’t necessarily to get the ball out of Rose’s hands, just to get in his passing lanes and make him think twice about swinging the ball to the open guy, but it was pretty effective from what I saw. Of course this requires that the Hawks recover when Rose does eventually pass the ball, but that may be something the Hawks could try, particularly with Smoove whose strength is help defense.

Also, the Hawks would be smart to knock Rose down on his first trip into the lane in Game 1. Put Zaza in and let him take the flagrant if necessary.

yes, Hinrich went to the bench with foul trouble and Rose went off on Jamal. the Hawks also tried a few possessions of zone but that didn’t go well, either. after the game Drew said he didn’t use Teague because dribble penetration was less an issue than the Hawks not being physical with Rose when he went to the basket.

For whatever it’s worth, only one ESPN analyst is predicting a Bulls sweep. Everyone else has the Hawks winning at least one game. None of them pick the Hawks to win the series, but still, for this team even that is a sign of respect. Maybe.

i think Jeff is capable of defending Rose. in fact, it appeared that Rose attacked more when Kirk was on him. Jeff applied pressure to the ball and Rose passed the rock.
limit Joe Johnson on Rose.. please. dont need the fouls leading to limited mins. dont need the tired legs leading to lack of effort. id much rather have him limit Deng’s production.

HINRICH, JOE, MARVIN, JOSH, HORFORD this lineup will loose in four by a margine, marvin is a better player coming of the bench so starting is a default.

Teague needs to be utilized on order for us to have a chance to win! He is really the only person that can guard Rose besides Kirk, And he also has the ability to drive the baskets and create shots for everyone else. But im not going to get excited because I know Drew is not going to play Teague if he does only at the end of the qtr when Rose is on the bench. He will have Jamal and Joe checking him watch. For whatever reason he wont play Teague or give a good reason as to why hes not playing. MC sense you cant get a good aswer from Drew you need to ask Sund how he feels about Teague getting no playing time.

Triangle & two, match-up zone or sagging man.
The triangle focuses on the Bigs + Box-outs.
The two = one man tight on Rose,
while the 2nd shadows (sagging off his man so much)
*that he can [trap, run & jump, fake trap, help, hedge, etc].
** Yes this leaves the [2] guard somewhat open and
we would be vulnerable.
But you have to give something to get something.
Would you rather take your chances against Rose or;
Korver, Brewer, or that other guy.
My point is;
if you can’t even think of his name…let him try & beat you.

I believe that the Bulls will have a god series against the Hawks. I dont expect the Hawks to lay down but I do feel that cohesion is their primary issue. isolation does not work against the Bulls and defensively we match up across the board. Bogans can play Joe and Deng was considered a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year for a reason. Boozer I believe will see a better series and Noah can matchup against any Big Atlanta has. I have the Bulls winning in 6!

Part of the reason the Hawks underachieved in the regular season this year was due to LD’s constant lineup changes and erratic substitution pattern. Since some of the reserves couldn’t get accustomed to routine playing time, this threw a lot of bench players off their rythmn and game. Outside of the Kirk Hinrich injury issue, LD should stick with the same starting lineup he used against the Magic. I’m suspect about Jeff Teague. I hope I’m wrong but I think he will probably be very nervous playing against the Bulls in Chicago. After all, he didn’t see much playing time against the Magic. In the beginning, unfortunately, I see JT creating turnovers, making bad passes, taking bad shots and committing imprudent fouls.
Message to LD: If Kirk Hinrich is out with injury and you choose to start Jeff Teague over Jamal Crawford, don’t hesitate to substitute Crawford for Teague especially if Teague begins to play with reckless abandon.

I hope Teague goes out there and intentionally turns the ball over 10 x’s a game and goes 0-50 this series if Larry Drew only plays him because he feels he is forced to play him. That’s total disrespect, like when someone tells you that they would not mess with you if you were the last person on earth.

“Jamal on Rose is a recipe for disaster.”
I think the recipe for disaster happens if LD subliminally demonstrates a loss in confidence in Teague before the series get started. Given Hinrich injury, if he doesn’t embrace Teague as a key element to his game plan equation, Teague might play timid. Teague needs a vote of confidence from his teammates and coach to play his game. To do what he does best with an expectation of success. In the recent past, when LD had no choice but to play Teague, Teague delivered. Given Rose quickness, Teague might exactly be a better matchup in our favor with extended minutes. Rose had his way KH in previous games as if he knew his tendencies. Teague, on the other hand, is still unknown to him. Teague defensive highlights should raise his flag.

Lets talk about matchups and lets talk about story lines. Match up wise if we use our bench we can cause a lot of problems for the Bulls. Horford and Zaza can outwork Noah, but it won’t be easy. The 4 is a little tricky because Boozer was nullified against Indiana and I don’t know why, but I think it can definitely be recreated with a mix of Josh and Marvin. I personally Marvin can match up well with Boozer and really trouble him. The three is another task for Marvin and Damien I feel they can keep Deng really busy. No question we have the edge at shooting guard we just need Jamal and Joe to make the right decisions. At the one well yeah Rose has it whether Hinrich plays or not.
I think the story line is simple Larry Drew trusted his Jason Collins and the team relatively stuck with his game plan. In this upcoming series DREW NEEDS TO TRUST TEAGUE. Teague has already shown he can compete and play at a high level and he has the speed to keep up with Rose. I am not saying start him, but I think he should be getting major minutes against Rose and Crawford should never be in that position.

This is the same reason we lost to Orlando last year. People were saying what we needed to do to stop Howard and didnt realize there were other players on the team. Let us all relax. We cant allow Boozier, Deng, and Korver to have their way. Just like last year we let R. Lewis, JJ, and V. Carter have their way. Have the bigs make Rose pay when he drives. And stay on the shooters. They are not creatures. If he take jumpers, then thats fine. You cant stop both but dont allow him to drive and kick or worse drive and score and get fouled. Have a lil faith people. We can debate all day about why LD will not play Jeff Teague. But none of knows the reason for sure.
But we can say based on prior experience that LD will either not play Jeff, or he will put him a situation to fail. End of story.
Jeff Teague displayed endlessly during the regular season that he plays well with the athleticism of our starters.
That he can defend on a near elite level. Check the Denver, Portland games etc.
That he does have an outside shot, just no set shot.
That he can penetrate the lane
That he has no floater really as of yet
And LD has shown that he hates Jeff Teague for whatever reason. To the point of costing us JC2, a first pick, and maybe this series because of an irrational desire to not play Jeff Teague by all appearances.
I root for Jeff Teague, because I’ve seen Coach’s before that just have it in for a guy. And that’s why I root for Jeff, because that’s the way it looks from here.
But why does he have it in for Jeff, that is only speculation on all of our part.

Injuries are apart of the game. That’s why you need to have your reserves ready in case of an injury.
With Hinrich out I’m sticking by my prediction Hawks in 7. I think Teague is capable of filling in for Hinrich and he will do a good job. When we did not have Hinrich and started Teague the Hawks did ok. We went 2-2 but in those games we lost we did not get blown and the games we had a chance to win late.
To those that are saying we don’t have a chance yall are no better than Nique. Teague needs our support and its pretty dam bad when your “vice president of basketball operations” don’t believe in you. Everytime Teague has played heavy minutes he has proven himself to be a quality NBA point guard.

And make no mistake, besides the Collins lineup change, we won the Orlando series in spite of LD, not because of LD.
Sorry I’m being harsh on LD, but it’s just the facts.
And unless we do something extraordinary the rest of the playoffs, and get a ton of confidence for next season, we will be a 7th seed at best next season I think if LD returns as Coach, but with a distinct possibility of being a lottery team.

Greg – Just not true. When your 2 coaches have been Woody, who hated you, and Larry Drew who loathed you, what was Jeff supposed to do, insert himself into games?
And just as Collins boxscore doesn’t show his value to the team, neither does Teague’s. He was a defensive beast this season, just like Collins on Dwight.
And Marvin was a #2 pick, Teague a #19. Just a little difference there.
And LD could have let Jeff have a little burn against DRose when Chitown when up by like 47 against the Hawks, but not LD.
It’s pathological with LD if you have followed them this season.

You know the Bulls played long stretches without Noah and Boozer, and kept on ticking. We can do the same, but it’s up to LD to grow up and show some confidence in Teague. He and Jamal can make a serviceable backcourt.
But you know Rose is licking his chops at a chance to get at Jamal. But Jamal is slightly better than Bibby.

Steve W, I agree. I don’t know were these guys are coming up with turnover machine. I really hate to say it, in the back of my mind LD will not start JT. He will go with Joe at PG and start Twin and Marvin. I have a feeling. Then he will bring Jamal in. Marvin has played well at the two, but Twin starting is not good in this series.
For those of you who don’t know, JT had 3 games when he scored at least 20 points. Marvin had 4. KH has not done it this season. I posted what each man did against Chicago, and JT’s numbers are better in limited minutes.
All season people have begged to play Teague to prepare him for this moment. We won 44 games, and JT had more DNP’s than last season. If Woody-Lite plays JT and he plays poorly, I will be the first to man up and say he does not have it and apologize in the blogs to Woody-Lite.
If he plays well, and gets the Hawks to the ECF….I would want to fire Woody-Lite for being so stupid all season and to keep him because he is the only Atlanta Hawk coach to get them to the ECF.

I have to laugh at the posters who make comments on coaching or a players def…with the NBA rules on Def. and contact on a star player..Kirk Hinrich is the best on man defender in the NBA..with the rules allowing moving screens and no hand checking..Kirk can only direct the player to a predetermined position on the floor. In order to do that, he has to take a beating from elbows and knees and fight for every inch he can get to close on the player who, is always the NBA’s poster child and guaranteed to get the call, if they miss a shot..Atlanta appreciate what you have, and hope he can come back..if not, make vacation plans in two weeks!!!

This Bulls team reminds me so much of a better offensive version not much of that 2001 sixers team. What hurts the Hawks though is that they do not have a point guard that will make Rose work on the defensive end like the Pacers did with Collison and AJ Price. Rose is not a good defender. Make him get his and worry about the other players not getting off mainly Korver and Deng. If those two can be contained and Horford and Smith outplay Noah and Boozer than Hawks have a chance. Also this series will be won on the boards and in the paint. Defense will have to be a staple for the Hawks in this series because we know the Bulls will win it.
Lastly, I hope this series is competitive like the series I believe the year was 1996–97 with the Blaylok Steve Smith team then the 1992–93 Wilkens Koncak teams. Anybody remember that team? Was ole defensive against that Bulls team and ended up getting swept

LOL . . that video is hilarious. Talk about body language saying something other than what your mouth is saying.
So if Hinrich is doubtful for the series, that means that Larry’s job is safe for next year. Now we have a somewhat legit excuse for not advancing past Chicago, seeing that the guy we traded for to put us past this round, got hurt.
This is either catastrophic . . or a blessing in disguise. Because until proven otherwise, the Teague – JJ – Marvin – Smith – Horford lineup is our BEST lineup statistically. No, that lineup didn’t play vs the elite of the league, but they did play well in the 5 games they mainly played together in ( Phoenix, Golden St, Denver, Portland, and Denver ).
Drew has to start Teague now. And start him out playing like Woody did Royal Ivey. But if Teague shows that he can produce, you extend his minutes without hesitation.
Here’s your chance Jeff. Prove all of your critics ( which includes myself ) wrong. If Drew plays you, you won’t ever get a better chance to prove your worth, than in these next few games. And while the excuse can definitely be said that any sort of poor play on your part is due to you not playing, you STILL have to take advantage of this.
If you don’t, you may never be the starting PG for the Atlanta Hawks . . EVER.
Seize the moment young fella.

We just need to go with a big line up. Thats the only was Rose will be put on the blocks the entire game. That way he wont be able to start the break so fast. He will be backed in on the post. So the line up should be Joe, Marvin, Josh, Al, and Twin. Therefore you could bring Teague, Crawford, Za, and Wilkins off the bench. Go Hawks

As long as LD can get over his self…and understand that Teague is going look really bad at times…than all is not lost.
I have yet to understand why LD sets the bar so high for Teague…and not the entire team.
I think if LD tells Teague something simple like…don’t make foolish gambles…keep Rose in front of you…and make him work for everything he gets…Teague can handle that…Heck, Rose is performing at MVP level…its not like Kurt was going to shut him down.
LD doesn’t has to come up with some funky line-up…give the kid his chance…Teague has handle his DNPs with class…now its time to show some confidence in the young fellow.

Tech Man . . I agree. But that’s all the more reason why you play him alongside a guy like JJ, who will be the one making the decisions anyway. All Teague has to do is play a complimentary role and slash to the hole on occasion when he has the chance. And on defense, play as hard as he can.
He’s the one player that if he gets out in the open court, could really energize our fast break.

How monumentally delusional would he have to be, given the fact that LD2 is not remotely an NBA prospect. But I wouldn’t put it past him. Look at LD2’s birthday rap after he quit on UNC in the midst of their run to a regular season ACC championship. Look at his younger brother getting kicked off his HS team because of Sharon Drew. MASSIVE entitlement issues, that family.
In lighter news, LD2 quitting on UNC is probably the best thing that could have happened to Harrison Barnes. After LD2 left, he quickly leaped back into the top 3 on all the draft boards.

If the Hawks elect to go with Jeff Teague as their point guard in the future, his development process will be long and painful. JT will probably never be as good as Mike Conley, Jr. (MC Jr.) and I think MC Jr. is a below average starting point guard in the NBA who makes silly turnovers and misses clutch shots and free throws down the stretch.

Teague is a pretty one dimensional player, but that one dimension, baseline-to-baseline speed and defense, is exactly what the Hawks need. We don’t need a traditional point guard. JJ brings the ball up and leads the team in assists. Teague can’t shoot but we have plenty of shooters. We just need somebody who can stay in front of drose.

Regardless of what will be Teague’s production in this series A REAL COACH would come publicly state NOW LOUD AND CLEAR that if Hinrich can’t play or is limited HE TRUSTED TEAGUE.
A REAL HC facing the possibility of not having a certain designated player MUST GIVE public confidence to the guy who is likely called to pick up the slack.
He should have said: WE HAD TEAGUE START FOR US AGAINST QUALITY PGs AND HE DID A GOOD JOB. I TRUST HIM TO STEP UP HIS GAME IF WE CAN’T USE HINRICH.
Instead, this sorry *ss excuse of a coach comes publicly say that he is not making any plans until he knows if he can use Hinrich or not, as if starting Teague was like starting a race with a donut tire.
What an idiot. Is that the way you instill confidence in a young player?
As for Rose, he shot horribly against IND.
We need to working him hard and physical AND limit the shooting of the other guys:
Deng’s 3 point shooting in this year’s playoffs: 1.8/4.4 40.9%
Korver’s 3 point shooting in this year’s playoffs: 2.0/3.4 58.8%
Bogan’s 3 point shooting in this year’s playoffs: 1.8/3.6 50.0%
That’s 17 points per game in 3 pointers on close to 50% shooting.
If we leave these guys open, they will stitch us with their outside shots.
The worst possible defensive strategy is to over react to a single player.
Use every single body available on him, be physical. That includes Pape Sy who is long and quick and can give 6 hard fouls.
Make him bleed and step on his ankle.
Look how the Spurs used to win championships: Bowen was a dirty defender, kicking ankles, stepping on feet, etc…

I have said over and over again, as have others, about what happens if the point goes down just before or during the playoffs. If LD didn’t give Teague a chance to get some games under his belt before this, I don’t see him making the change now. He will probably have Joe start at point and Damien at the 2 spot with Damien taking the defensive assignment on Rose and Joe running the offense.
LD will probably use the same offense he did with Orlando only switching the focus point from Center to Point. Run Damien, Jamal and some Teague at D. Rose and concentrate on stopping Deng and Boozer. Noah is not that big a scoring threat. I will be very surprised if he starts Teague. He had his opportunity to do so all season and didn’t and I don’t see him doing that now. The only thing that may change is if JT comes in like a house on fire and the team gets in an uptempo game. That is JT’s strong point.

“Is it remotely possible for the Hawks to wheel and deal and get somebody like Kemba Walker or is that too far-fetched?” – The Real Mandingo
It’s funny you mention Kemba Walker because I was watching him all season on nbadraft.net’s mock draft. He was actually sitting in the Hawks’ draft position for most of the season before he caught fire in the postseason and started moving up. He’s undersized and scouts probably looked at him as a Nate Robinson type, but nobody knew he was that good until he did his thing on the big stage.
There will actually be some teams trying to trade out of this weak draft. The Clippers already dumped their pick to get Cleveland to absorb Baron Davis’ contract. They felt like they were young enough. But unfortunately the Hawks don’t have alot of trade assets. Teague is actually the most trade-able asset we have, being on a rookie scale contract and having shown flashes.
Beyond that we have Josh and All Star Al signed to value contracts and JC1, Marv, Joe and Kirk are all overpaid relative to their production. There’s alot of speculation that Smoove could be the one to go, but we’d have to get alot back to make it worth it.

Jamal is actually a decent passer. The problem is, if you go to NBA.com and look at Game 6 highlights, those two layups Jameer scored were helped by JC1’s defensive indifference. The first one he didn’t even try to stay in front of Jameer. On the second consecutive layup, JC1 shoots in the lane and stands there to see if it goes in. When Jameer goes racing down the other way, JC1 picks up Arenas and leaves Marvin to try to stop a full speed Jameer forray to the basket. JC1 doesn’t even try on defense… he’s indifferent.

Just saw bit and pieces and most of the 4th quarter of the MEM-SA match up last night.
Randolph was on fire to close the game. He hit shots which were at a collective clutch and difficulty level that I only remember seeing MJ putting together on a stage like this (maybe Lebron’s 4th quarter against the Pistons a few years ago matched this as well, but the defense on him was not this tight).
Both Duncan and McDyess were all over him, trapping, moving their feet, hands all over and he managed to swish step back jumpers, get out of the traps driving around them and getting off-balance shots to hit nothing like net.
I was also wondering if MEM would be this successful with Gay since his presence would have certainly taken the ball out of Randolph’s hands and he destroyed the Spurs all series long.
Also, Gay’s presence (who’s D is sub par) would have probably diminished Battier’s minutes, so this is one of the most intriguing “what ifs” around.

If gay was healthy, Memphis might not have traded for battier. And I have not been impressed by Gay. He seems like a volume shooter who plays little defense

Kirk played well against Orlando, and he will be Moises against rose.
However, I’ve been saying it all year from when bibby was here. LD should have been playing teague consistent minutes (even if it was only 12 MPG) because u never know when injuries might happen.
Even when bibby was struggling, LD refused to give teague consistent minutes, and would go with Jamal at PG even though the results were not there.
And after the trade, teague played well enough to get consistent backup minutes, but once again, LD hardly played him, despite publicly praising him.
That bulls game where rose torched Jamal and LD didn’t play teague was inexcusable, because that might have helped teague confidence this series.
That being said, I hope teague accept the challenge and play well.

Why is it that the Bulls have jumped the Hawks in expectation?
The Hawks are just as talented if not more talented.
The Hawks should be able to win this series in 6 even without Hinrich.
The only difference between the team is the Bulls respect the game more and play to their strength.
The Hawks consistently to their weaknesses, jump shot, half court offense, and lazy defense.
This is not Miami or Boston, this is Chicago, less playoff experience, and a team with the same talent level. The intangibles will win this series.

@SteveW-Wow,how can you say we will be a 7 seed next year. Well some people said we would be the 8th seed this year. We didnt even play up to our ability and we still finished 5th easily. The Bucks, Knicks, 76ers, Pacers, and Bobcats were all predicted to finish higher than us this year. Where are all those teams now? At home or fishing. Drew has done an ok job this year and will only get better. When we win this round I know you will still find a reason to put him down. But thats cool with us.

Let me state the obvious. Rose is the concensus MVP of the league. All the league opposing point guards, the quick ones, the tall ones, the completely healty ones, and the defensive minded ones have not been able to stop Derrick Rose. Rose has been taking BIGS to the rim.
Now that being said, how can anyone think that Hinrich can stop Rose, especially if he is not completely healed and comes back 80-85%. Teague is quick, may actually have confidence in his ability to stay in front of Rose, howvever, he will not be able to contain him. LD want give him the minutes & his limited shooting ability & handle makes him a liability on the offensive end as well.
For the Hawks to have a chance against Rose, either get the ball out of his hands or see if his team can win with him scoring 50 – 60 points.
Grand Dad suggested using a Triangle & Two. Maybe a Box & One. LD should dedicate the first game to this stategy. Give Teague the minutes and play him as a STARTER the entire game. Sub in Damien Wilkins to play Rose while Teaugue rests. These two player should be dedicated to Rose. Why? You have 12 fouls to use, Teague is the quickest & Damien is the best defender, and what do you have to lose, LD does not play them anyway.
Lastly, keep Twin in the lineup to wear down Noah, by the 4th quarter. Reduce his opportunities for 2nd chance rebounds, as they are not running plays for him on the offensive end. Also, gives 6 more fouls to use in the lane, when Rose beats his man. Twin should lay him down on the court EARLY & OFTEN!!!
We would still have Horford, JJ, Jamal, Josh for scoring along with whatever Marvin decides he wants to contribute.
Hinrich will not be available, so he’s no answer. Try this DEFENSE as a Game One experiment. Hey it’s game one of the 2ND round and no one is giving you a chance against the Bulls. “You can’t lose the series after just one game!” Just learn the lesson the game teaches you, win or lose!!
The end result is the Bulls did what they were suppose to do win on their home court,

Thanks for the response regarding Kemba Walker.
I would be more comfortable with Jeff Teague if the shot form and release on his perimeter jumper was more traditional and orthodox. In my opinion, JT has an unusual (abnormal) release on his jump shot. JT and the Hawks should have worked more to improve his perimeter game last offseason. I think, if Teague shot a field goal percentage of 44%+ from 15ft. and beyond, Coach LD would have a lot of confidence in JT. By the same token, JT would play an overall better and smarter game if he shot well from the perimeter. There’s nothing like hitting a couple of outside jumpers to loosen up a point guard and get percolating.

Here are a few Player Efficiency Ratings to compare:
Mike Conley-15.9
Jameer Nelson- 15.47
Jeff Teague- 14.62
Jamal Crawford- 14.29
Marvin Williams- 13.51
Mike Bibby- 10.93
PER doesn’t reflect defense as much as offense.
Jeff Teague ranks 18th in the NBA in steals per minute and 53rd in the NBA in blocks per minute. He has the highest steal rate and the 3rd highest block rate on the Hawks (behind Al and Josh).
And remember the last time that Kirk started against Chicago, they scored like 85 points in the first quarter. He has not shown that he can slow down Rose, so why is everyone acting like the series was riding on him?
Having said that, if Drew plays Jamal and JJ on Rose instead of giving Teague a shot, we’re looking at a 4 game series. So if we’re factoring in Drew’s stubborn refusal to play Teague, then yeah Kirk’s injury is probably a season ending one for him and the Hawks.

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I was watching the game (on my TV of course!). I haven’t had a chance to watch Zach that much this year and didn’t realize he was that good. (I knew he was good, but if last night’s performance is any indication of how he consistently performs, then Zach > J-Smoove.) Also I saw Arthur really show some athleticism around the rim, too and was impressed.
“Damn . . looks like I may have to do a Saturday in Memphis, and a Sunday in Atlanta next weekend.”
Sounds like a nice problem to have. After the Memphis game last night, I was talking to my wife, and I think if we had the financial means, we would be doing the same. (Unfortunately for us, it looks like I am not going to have work for at least two months this summer, so I probably won’t be able to catch another Hawks’ game live. This makes me sad.)

Ra’mon,I have been preaching that since he got here..Some of these unknown names who come on this blog are talking like Kirk(who i do agree is an upgrade over bibby)is a freaking shutdown PG..Plus,to his defense i have not seen him as a floor general because he always defers the ball to Crawford and Al,Smoove,Joe,Marvin almost always start the fast break themselves and never harldy let the guy set up the play on the other end..Floor General???? Give me a break..
And Tech Guy,
U don’t know what u are talking about. What u and others are missing is that this guy is better than u think he is..
1st,he is a team ball player. The hawks are a “and 1″ team that plays unorganized basketball. All LD did was give them the orders of playing the 3 point shooters tough on defense and let howard do his thing but foul him hard to make him earn it at the free throw line..THATS IT!!
Taking all these outside shots and not attacking the rim as soon as Howard went out and having a power forward jacking up 3’s and never getting the ball to your supposed floor general kirk hinrich is what nba scouts and coaches see..
This team got by Orlando because in spite of the coaching and should have won it in a sweep…
Teague made a comment that he played alongside Kirk better than he did with anyone else on the team when he is on the floor. He stated they both attacked and had each others back with help defense and they knew where the other one was at all time..And wasn’t the issue of “help defense” the main thing that Josh brought up to Cheryl MIller on TNT in a game earlier this year?
So,its not an issue to me if he can play or not. He has been a turnover machine this year..He scores,he gets the ball to open players..And if Jamaal and Joe can get in position and get open instead of trying to play the point when Teague is in the game they will score a lot more

@Wordlwide Clyde- I think we need to change the whole entire game plan and go on the attack. I say start PG-Joe SG-Marvin SF-Smoove PF-Horford C-Collins. We need to keep Rose occupied on the other end of the court. Make him play some D on Joe or Marvin. They can both shoot over him or either post him up. Posting would be better. That way he would only be able to start the break underneath our basket on a rebound. This would also put him in foul trouble.

I predict the Bulls will win in 5 games, and I also see at least one 40 point blowout for the Bulls of course. You just never know what you get with the Hawks. The Bulls represent the true definition of a “team”. The starters are too skilled, and the bench is too deep for the Hawks. Perhaps the Hawks can view this year as a stepping stone for next season. i’m glad they beat Orlando, but they are not quite ready for a team the caliber of the Bullys.

Some of of these comments are just plain crazy.
Rose scores on everyone thats why he is going to be the league MVP
The people claiming Jeff teague is the answer to anything are the same fools who claimed we get swept if we didnt play him in the first round .
The only way we stand a chance in this series is if our 4 best players (Joe ,Jamal,Al,Josh) actually play like they are our 4 best players .teague is so far down the list of essentials just as Hinrich wouldve been .
OMG I cant believe that some of you have convinced yourselves that Hinrich was gonna shut down Rose. Seriously thats just as stupid as the writers saying how we will only win one game.
No one is gonna stop Rose and the quicker we accept that the better off we will be however we play them like we used to play the old heat when they just had D-Wade .
ZONE when Korver is not in the game
traps
double teams
LATE IN THE CLOCK DOUBLE TEAMS .when the clock gets to ten seconds and Rose is at the top of the key you send a double from whoever is guarding Bogans,Brewer .
START ZAZA because its important that we take a hard foul early and often and neither Al nor Josh is gonna do it
Youve got to make Rose work defensively hes not the greatest defensive player and while he will have fresh legs in game one after 3-4 games of taking a pounding on the offensive end while having to chase people around screens for 40+ minute a night it will take its toll.
Teague pretty much ensures that the Bulls can double team anytime they want now.
Kirk was shooting the ball so well against the magic that they couldnt leave him and they basically cheated off Josh because he was standing at the three point line most of the time and dared Josh to beat him with the three .
Now with Teague in they dont have to worry about Josh or Teague from the perimeter .

Can’t say the Hawks won despite of their coach. If you listened to the time-out huddles with LD he was saying exactly the right things – swing the ball & attack the rim. The Hawks continued to play ISO with JJ/Jamal & Josh continued to take 3’s. Maybe LD doesn’t have a commanding personality or maybe the players today know they can do what they want. When you make 10X more money than your boss I guess you don’t really have to listen.

The people that keep advocating that Jason Collins should start, forget that Noah KILLED that dude on the boards in the time he was in the game in the 1st Chicago game. He offered absolutely no resistance to Noah and didn’t slow him down one bit. We immediately fell behind double-digits in that first game, due to everybody, including Collins, playing like crap.
It was Al Horford, and his work on the offensive boards that saved us in that 1st game, along with his great shotmaking in the 2nd half.
In the 2nd game vs the Bulls, we actually had the lead at halftime, before coming out extremely flat to start the 3rd, thus, leading to the blowout.
In game 3, we started the downward slide as soon as the bench started to come in, and the starters could never regain control of the game. Then it got completely out of control as the game progressed.
Jason Collins was NOT a factor in the Game 1 win. And if he’s not guarding a center that looks for his offense, he becomes a detriment in a game, due to his inability to defensively rebound the basketball, and his inability to challenge shots in the paint, and his inability to score offensively.
Just like this may be the series for Teague and Damien, this is NOT the series for Jason Collins. The Bulls are a fast, athletic, defensively aggressive team. The last thing we need on the court is a slow, inactive big man on the floor.
Honestly, Hilton Armstrong should play before Jason Collins in this series.

If LD just hates Teague, and refuses to play him, I would probably tinker with this lineup:
PG – JJ
SG – Wilkens
SF – Marvin
PF – Josh
C – Al
You’ve still got Jamal and ZaZa as your 2 primary backups.
The rest of the bench: Teague, Collins, Hilton, Etan, and Powell. Use as needed.
Vava74 – LD pathologically hates Teague. He will not set him up to succeed, only to fail.
And if Teague came out in game 1 and went toe to toe with DRose, it wouldn’t matter. Teague would be back on the bench in no time flat. It’s irrational from our perspective, so we need to quit being rational about the situation. LD hates Teague, end of story.
And maybe LD2 is part of the equation, IDK.

To have a commanding voice you need to really instill accountability.
LD does the opposite: when players disobeyed him – for instance Smoove – instead of benching him and make him accountable for not doing what he is supposed to do, he didn’t and said PUBLICLY that he had to “live with it”.
So, with that example, what “command” can you expect from him? Nothing.
This team almost doesn’t have an HC. They have a guy who more or less checks who’s tired and who has fouls and makes substitutions in accordance to that.
Not in accordance to production.

If Deng destroys Marvin, immediately put Damien in. Same for if Vice Versa happens
I maybe would start ZaZa. The guy needs to play at least 25 minutes a game in this series.

I also said on the last blog that Joe should get minutes at the point. If he and marvin can trap rose and obscure his sight line for passes because of their size you can beat this team, because he is their only ball handler and facilitaor, it is like cutting off the head of the snake the rest of the body just flails around. The other thing is the Hawks are not going to stop him from scoring, but if they can hold him to 22 points or less with 6 assists or less, you are going to beat this team. Because it means the rest of the team is going to have to score at least 65 points to win, thats if the hawks can average about 90 points/game. Against Noah we are going to need Zsa Zsa, Hilton, and Etan Thomas, and maybe josh powell, those guys are quicker than collins, and would be able tor run the floor to keep up with noah.
On the teague issue, I think he starts, because I do not think LD wants to disrupt his bench rotation. So Teague probabley plays 15 to 20 minutes per game. His job is going to be to pick DRose up full court and make him work, to try and tire him a little, and to try and deny him the ball, the hawks will cause the bulls some matchup problems, it going to be whether they take advantage of them; Hawks in (6). They will split the first two in chicago, split at home, when game 5 in chicago, and game 6 at home.

Collins and Teague’s statlines don’t reflect their value because of their defense.
Josh’s statline over inflates his contributions, because I don’t know how taking minutes off to sulk and complain (more than Kobe etc.) shows up in stats. And he also can be the biggest momentum shifter in the league, with a bad pass or an ill advised jumpshot.
Stats mean something, but they don’t mean everything.

Not to say that Josh doesn’t have outstanding talent, but man he frustrates me sometimes. More than Al, JJ, or Jamal. They all frustrate me by their play sometimes. Josh just more so. I don’t see another player quite like Josh on a consistent basis on any other team in the League.

But we can beat Chicago, with or without Hinrich. All depends on LD.
We got 8 who can run with the Bulls in:
JJ
Jamal
Al
Josh
ZaZa
Wilkens
Teague
Marvin
We just have to use the pieces correctly.
An eight man rotation means that everybody plays 30 minutes Or 4 guys play 35 and 4 guys play 25. But an 8 man rotation is very doable in this League. And we have the 8 to do with it.
Just gotta be smart.

Larry Drew hates Jeff Teague for no reason and the facts are that Teague’s single best game is better than Hinrich’s. Teague is a very explosive young player, with flaws, which is no different than Josh Smith if you are able to put things into context. The two most memorable individual performances for me this year were Horford against the Bulls and Teague against the Trailblazers. I still remember JJ in game 1 against Memphis getting to the line double digit times also. Anybody dissing Teague is a hateful fool IMO. The young guy has been in the league 2 years and is still a rookie because ASG keeps giving coaches short contracts and all the coachings can think about is doing enough to keep there jobs, it has been said several times that potential and talent gets coaches fired. I blame the ASG, Woody, and LD for Teague not being developed this is one thing that I am not putting on Sund and especially not on Teague. Go check Steve Nash’s career stats. Even Nash could not do anything with the type of minutes Teague has gotten so-far in his career.

And I don’t know what Teague the Teague haters have been watching.
At Wake, when he was at Point, Wake was dominate, and Teague was one of the best players in the game. He could take over against most anybody in college.
Then when Ish Smith came back, Wake crashed and burned.
Teague fell to #19 in a very PG heavy draft. Steve Lavin said he may be the best PG from that draft after 5 years.
Hollinger said he could be that years Rondo.
He’s had two clowns as HC’s in the NBA, but the guy can ball. He can play D with the best of them. And his athleticism fits with our small lineup. They guys a gymnast also, backflips, handsprings etc. He’s an elite level athlete.
Just turn him loose and let him play. Of course he’s going to make mistakes. LD has trained him for that. But turn the guy loose. He beasted after the Bibby trade. He’s got the talent, just turn him loose.

Teague a TO machine? He’s only had 3 TO’s in a game twice since the Boston game on Dec. 16th. And that’s starting against Miller and Jennings, and playing alot against Lawson and Felton. Where do people get this stuff from?
And his turnover ratio is much lower than the League MVP DRose!

The odds are against us in this series.
LD has 2 choices:
1) He can be rigid like Woody and use THE SAME LINEUP EVERY GAME AND GET THE SAME RESULTS (LOSSES)
2) He can do something different and START A DIFFERENT LINEUP THAT WORKS TO OUR ADVANTAGES’
Let Teague play. Last series he did not need to play, or was he supposed to, but we need him now.
Too bad LD set him up to fail
I THOUGHT WHEN WOODY WAS FIRED, IT WAS BECAUSE HE DIDN’T PLAY COLLINS AND TEAGUE ENOUGH. WHY HAS TEAGUE HARDLY PLAYED THIS YEAR? WTF HAPPENED IN THE PORTLAND GAME LAST MONTH?

KH is not so good we that we should fold our tent and go home. In fact he wasn’t even barely adequate against Rose (and others I could mention) previously. The problem I see is we are down a guard because we traded 2 and got one back. Some of you act like he is an all-star or MVP. If our savior against the Bulls is KH then we have bigger problems than anyone imagined. I was right about round 1; and the Hawks (LD) need to man up and play Jeff. You drafted him, kept him, and now you need to play him. Go Hawks! I’m still going to root for all the Hawks, including KH.

All we hear about is how much Horford loves playing Chicago. He and Joe really need to be on their games in this series. I want Joe relentlessly attacking whoever is guarding him.
Horford needs to not back down from their frontline. I will never forget that article about how much he loves playing CHI and then he choked miserably.
The only thing that impresses me about Chicago is Derrick Rose and their head coach. We have a better more athletic frontline, a far better shooting guard, and Jamal + ZaZa are better than their best bench players.
LD better have a good gameplan.

I honestly beleive Teague is our best bet at slowing Rose….the only problem is that Teague likes to gamble and may pick up cheap fouls which will really put us in a bad spot. I think we should activate Pape Sy like some have mentioned rotate Teague, Damien, and Pape on Rose. Any chance LD activates pape?
I think we just need to stay in fron of rose, let him go off (no more that 50) and contain everyone else.

If JT starts, LD needs to let the kid play. Not like when he started against Denver and played about 15 minutes. IF he plays 30 minutes per game the Hawks will win the series. If he plays at least 40 minutes, the Hawks will surely win. He has played at least 40 minutes twice and his career and each time gave the Hawks big games. He need to shoot at least 15 shots, and making 6 we will be okay. If he makes at least 6 fgs, he will average about 18-20 ppg because he will be at the line. The strategy is Plan A – run, Plan B run, and if Plan B does not work, go to plan A – run. The more the Hawks set up on offense the worst they will be. All that running will not be good for Rose’s ankle.

“i could debate this point with facts and observations but since it’s not debatable, what’s the use?”
Since you bring it up though, could you do a comparison of PG defense for this team using Synergy or whatever? How do the stats say Kirk, Teague, Jamal, Joe, and for that matter Bibby stack up against each other when it comes to defending point guards in general and Rose in particular? My observation agrees with Booo that Teague, at least when he has played significant minutes with the starters, has defended better than Kirk more consistently, but his defensive performance seems to fall off when he’s in with the reserves or in garbage time which presumably is a significant chunk of his minutes.

This would also put him in foul trouble
U r an idiot!. Marvin could not even post up Jameer! I hate to say it, but I think that is the lineup LD will roll with. If so Hawks lose in 5.

I’m beginning to second guess my call on starting Twin @ the Center position. I don’t trust Twin in trying to box out Noah on the boards. Noah can be a monster on the offensive glass. You know, when he (Noah) gets those offensive putbacks and displays a lot of emotion thereafter, this really hypes up the Chicago crowd which could powerfully and negatively impact the Hawks’ psyche and confidence. Once the Hawks’ confidence is shattered, lethargy sets in and that usually spells a trip to Blowout City for the Hawks. I guess the best option is to start either Marvin or JT at one of the guard spots if Hinrich is unavailable.
Question To All:
In your opinion, how many games do the Hawks win this (past regular season) year with Lionel Hollins as the head coach and what seed/position do the Hawks, if any, heading into the playoffs?

As long as we do not start Marvin Williams we will be fine. Marvin and Josh are both 2 inconsistent at doing anything well to be on the same court for long stretches. The former starter lineup should be dead by now. On the other hand, I am pretty sure that LD is too stupid to realize what a bad lineup that is. Marvin is not going to work at SG either because he can’t take advantage of his size you see how Jameer stripped him consistently in mismatches last series. Rick Sund or the new GM is going to have to find a way to get rid of Marvin or he will keep finding his way into the starting lineup.
PG Crawford (I know he isn’t a PG and will get ate alive on D)

But no way should Marvin be starting along side Josh. That’s starting 2 wild card type players since neither are consistent at doing anything good.

I like Kirk but in all fairness he has been treated like the great white savior on these boards and I could care less about his skin color, but if you listen to people on these boards, words like IQ started getting thrown around when Kirk became a Hawk and if you ask them he is our only high IQ player when people like Jason Collins went to Stanford and would not even be in the league if it was not for his smart position defense. Not to mention Joe played with guys like Nash who you have to learn things from that increase your basketball IQ. I don’t care about his skin but a lot of people on sites like this do. That’s why they swore he was a great move when he really wasn’t and when he was not even looking like it during the regular season.

My thoughts are measured. If! The Hawks come out and compete hard for 48 minutes each game, they can absolutely win this series.
It is entirely up to the Hawks.
Win or lose, I just hope they compete. Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game. Perkins go down in game 6 last season and they lose game 7 to LA. Would they have won the Title if Perkins had not gone down?
Maybe, maybe not. We will never know. If the Hawks advance to the ECF? That will be our Super Bowl right there. We don’t garner enough talent to take down OKC nor Lakers. We could possibly defeat all the obstacles in the East. (with tongue in cheek)

Regardless of what happens this series for the Hawks where do they go as far as moves going forward?I know a lot depends on what the CBA looks like. Drew will be back. He did that getting past the first round. Does anyone see them trying to make a move for Dwight?I get the impression Josh Smith will try to be moved. It seems a lot of fans have fallen out of favor with his play lately. I also think Marvin probably needs a change of teams.
Honestly where are the Hawks going forward? They dont have a lot of capspace and I dont get the impression they are going to go over the cap. 2nd round is nice and if they get to ECF that would be great but you get to a point in time where you want to see more. How many times you go through with a team first making it to first round great then second round then ECF and then maybe a finals then a chance to win a championship. I am at the point with the Hawks they need to get to a Finals with a chance to win a championship. Been through the late 70’s early 80’s with Nique 90’s Blaylock Smith Mutumbo. Looking for more. I am not saying i am expecting the hawks to make deep postseason runs like the Lakers do, but is it too much to ask for them to have a run like Pistons in the mid 2000’s or even the Nets when they went back to back to the Finals

While we on it,i seen it a lot too..
They (tv play by play teams) would always say about the white player,”ohh he’s a hard worker”,or “he is a smart player”(like the alabama qb who the jets drafted today),and a lot of times those comments would be followed after they would say,”he may not be the most gifted or the fastest athlete but”,and then those 2 earliers quotes would follow..
“What they mean is,he may not be black and fast but”………..
Im tired of hearing it too..If thats what they really mean then they should say it..
I guess they think that just because u are fast and u can avoid tackles or dribble the ball and run and dunk it that it takes no intelligence at all??!!!
Well,it takes concentration,it takes seeing a play before it happens to avoid a tackle or the ball being stripped..It takes thinking just as fast as u are playing..Hard work is all those years in the backyard playing with your dad and fams and neighborhood friends..
Then playing at the boys club, school playground or rec center..
Then actually playing on a team at an early age..
Then a lot of running, jumping and not knowing it but putting muscles on your body..
All while being a student of the game and a student in school as well..
U think J-Smoove is not smart in what he does? Timing his blocks, measuring the speed of a player, his distance from Smoove and how fast and high that smoove has to run and jump to block that shot???

Najeh . . it’s an extremely small sample size ( only 13 minutes ), but here is what Rose did against Teague, when Teague was on the court. These numbers are per-36 minutes:
13.8 ppg
5.5 rebs
11.1 asst
14% FG
33% 3FG
Rose was 1 – 7 FG and 1 – 3 3FG when Teague was in the game. He missed 3 midrange shots and one shot at the rim.
Now of course Teague isn’t going to hold Rose to 14% shooting, but it is an indication that he could give Rose some trouble in short stretches. Maybe instead of 14% shooting, he could hold him to 33% shooting, or somewhere along those lines.
It would be interesting to see if a combination of Teague and JJ harrassing Rose out on the perimeter on a double team, could bother Rose and force a few turnovers.

And the fact that he only got to the rim one time, and only got to the line 5.5 times per 36 minutes, ( which equals one free throw every 6.5 minutes ) . . means that he also only shot 2 FTs while Teague was guarding him.
Like I said . . it’s a small sample size. But it is an indication that he may be able to hold his own a little bit against Rose.
Drew would be silly to not try Teague against Rose. And if he’s going to play, I’d rather him play with the Starters, than with the reserves.

“You are essentially starting 3 guys who you cant depend on in Marvin,Josh, and Teague in hopes of trying to win a playoff series . ”
The problem with this line of reasoning is that it implies that Al, Joe, Jamal, etc. are players you can depend on. Nobody knows if Aggressive Joe or Passive Joe will show up. Nobody knows if Al will put up 31 and 16 or if he will shoot 40% for the series like against Orlando and pass up makeable shots all game long. Nobody knows if Jamal is going to catch fire or if he’s going to throw up bricks and get burned all day on D.
There is nobody on this team who is dependable game in and game out. We don’t have a Kobe or a LeBron. Start the players who give you the best chance of countering the Bulls matchup-wise and hope for the best.
Starting lineup: Teague/Joe/Marvin/Smoove/Al
Bench: Jamal/Damien/Zaza/Collins
Teague is the Hawks guard best equipped to slow down Rose and make it hard for him to get in the lane. Smoove has the athletic advantage over Boozer and is more effective at PF than at SF where he has to close out on shooters and tends to drift to the perimeter. Presumably Al will step up his game going up against Noah in the playoffs. Marvin is unreliable as ever but he played good man to man D in the Orlando series and has the appropriate body type to chase Deng around and deny him open looks. Joe had trouble when Turkoglu guarded him in the Magic series because of Turkoglu’s length; Deng is equipped to give him similar problems whereas Bogans is not.
I’m not entirely opposed to Teague/Joe/Smoove/Al/Collins either. Collins is not a good rebounder but he does box out; he doesn’t get rebounds because he doesn’t jump. If he can box out Noah, it’s on Al and Smoove to swoop into the space vacated to get rebounds, like they did in Game 6 against Orlando when both got double doubles. I like one thing that Collins does on the offensive end that doesn’t show up in the box score, which is sealing off his man to create space for Joe to drive to the basket.
Ideally in my opinion the Hawks should have/could have started Teague/Kirk/Joe/Smoove/Al. I know this contradicts what I said earlier about Joe being matched up on Deng, but the tradeoff of having three players on the floor who can guard Rose and bringing Marvin off the bench where he is more effective would have been worth it to me.

^^I meant Game 4, not Game 6. But the broader point still stands; in Game 4 Smoove and Al got double doubles, and in Game 6 Joe and Al got double doubles. The Hawks outrebounded the Magic in both games. Collins is capable of boxing out even if he can’t rebound. If he does that the other players on the floor have to crash the boards.

Drew said a lack of consistency prevented Teague from joining the rotation.
“That being said, I will never give up on him,” Drew said. “I still believe in his ability. I know that when he plays with consistency, he’s a totally different player and we’re a totally different team. I see something in him that I really like.”
Yeah, because the rest of the team is such a model of consistency. Maybe Nique has more influence on the Hawks’ coaches than we all think. Hard for me to think of another reason why this blatant double standard seems to permeate the higher ups in this organization.

That is true about Smith but he just isnt the same player to me as he was even say two years ago. IT is really hard to figure him out. Wouldnt you agree he has the potential to play like Zach especially the rebounds part? I know Joe Johnson gets killed sometimes but he is the best on the team taking it to the basket he has a handle and has a midrange game.
I posted those draft picks to point out how bad the Hawks draft picks has been. You are right most didnt last past their rookie contract. Some even less than that. I would agree with you I wouldnt start Collins it isnt as if the Bulls have Howard in the middle and that negates Collins ability to start. The key for this series is Smith and Horford have to play tough defense and rebound the ball. Another thing that will hurt the Hawks is lack of a shotblocker to make it difficult for Rose to get clear shots at the basket

Collins is our fullback I guess then. He picks up the blitz on pass plays, enabling the QB to get the pass off . . or he makes the key block that springs the RB for a big gain. Neither play will show up in the box score.
I’d still would rather roll with anybody but Collins though. Damn we need to obtain a big man rebounder at the very lease during the offseason.

NO . . he does not have the ability to play like Zach, because Zach has always played an inside/outside game. Smith, if you let him, would rather camp out on the perimeter on every possession. And that alone prevents him from being as good of a rebounder than Zach. Zach, for the most part, makes sure he’s in the paint when that shot goes up.
I think the Lamar Odom comparison is dead on though. Eddie Johnson ( the former Seattle Sonic and Phoenix Sun player ), said 4 – 5 years ago that Josh reminded him more of Lamar Odom, than anybody else. I’ve always wanted him to play more like Shawn Kemp. But it looks like that will never happen.

Is there going to be a big man available this off season that
(a) represents an improvement over Zaza and Jason
(b) can be had given the current CBA (things might be even worse under any new CBA)
(c) can be had given the Spirit Group’s reluctance to go into the luxury tax
In order for condition (b) to be met, it would have to be someone obtainable for the MLE or lower.
In order to for condition (c) to be met, it would (in all likelihood) have to be a vet minimum guy. Or maybe the Spirit group might be willing to violate condition (c)?
Under the best case scenario in which the Spirit Group is willing to go into the luxury (and the new CBA doesn’t keep the Hawks from being able to sign what would now be considered an MLE player), who would be the potential answer? Are any of those potential answer better than Zaza and Collins?
My best answer is DeAndre Jordan. His services MIGHT be obtainable for MLE-type money. He has a lot of upside. But is he good enough now to make a real difference for the Hawks next year? Also, given all the teams that need big men, what’s the chances of the Hawks being the one team that is able to grab him?
Who else might be available? Nenad Kristic? Joel Pryzbilla? Kurt Thomas? Dan Gadzuric? Take a chance on Greg Oden? It’s not clear that any of these guys offer a clear improvement over Zaza and Collins. Who else might be available for MLE-type money?

I agree we need a shakeup regardless. If Teague gets atleast 25 minutes a game this series and does not average 8 pts 3 asts and 3 rebs I say move him. I like Teague but he has a lot of value in trades because honestly I don’t think any of these college guards in the draft are as good as Teague. Kemba does nothing defensively and is not Teague and nowhere near as quick as Lawson. Jimmer is Eddie House at best in the NBA and Kyrie Irving is going to be the next Jay Williams not wishing that on him but I doubt if he every stays healthy for 1 and #2 he is being overrated I did not see any Chris Paul in the guy, Teague would eat him alive. I think if you put Josh and Teague in a package you can get a whole lot. On the other hand, trading a guy with the talent of Josh alone you rarely get value. Below are a few trades of value that have a chance:
Josh for Monta Ellis: Ellis can play PG for Hawks we don’t need a true PG. Honestly, I want Teague to play like Monta not Chris Paul. If you want the truth, Deron Williams, Westbrook, Rose, they all play more like SG’s than PG’s, they shoot the ball a whole damn lot.
Josh for Okafor: I would be skeptical about this though. I’m not sure given the age difference and marketability difference that this would really be value but Okafor does block shots and is a legit NBA C because of strength and wingspan and he plays smarter.
Lastly, maybe Josh and Kirk for Rashard Lewis and Javal McGee: You would have to take Lewis horrible contract to even get them to think moving McGee and I still doubt if they would. McGee has as much upside as Josh in a lot of ways.
It’s not gonna be easy to move Josh because its gonna be so tough to get value back and we don’t need to be taking a big step back in talent. Maybe Cleveland would take him if they get the #2 pick and are not sold on Derrick Williams though. I would do that in a minute and Cleveland would have to think about it.

I have posted several FA lists on this blog.
C’s that would help
1. Marc Gasol he will get a Al and Noah type contract though so forget it.
2. Tyson Chandler- when Haywood and Gortat signed to be backup C’s there contracts were both about $6 million a year. Chandler is no backup he will be getting 8-10 a year forget it.
3. Samuel Dalembert- He may be a guy that is attainable for 5 to 6 million a year. He was a backup sometimes in Sactown and starter sometimes. He may be possible.
4. Deandre Jordan- No way anyone is paying this guy $12 million a year. You are delusional if you think so. He has not even shown to be a full time starter. He will be a guy that is attainable for 5 to 6 million a year.
5. Greg Oden- He is another guy that should be in the 5-6 million dollar range because of injuries I just don’t see someone paying he more when he may not ever get right but I could be wrong about this one.
The Wildcard is getting Chris Kaman who I am not a fan of and would not even think of putting anyone other than Marvin and Zaza in a trade for and would think hard about putting Zaza in the trade. Kaman is another inconsistent type dude that I would not really want. Kaman is possible because I don’t see the Clips wanting to pay Kaman about $11 million next year and pay Jordan also. That is the reason Memphis moved Thabeet because they were not going to pay him near $6 million next year and pay Gasol 10-12 which they are going to have to.
Another Wildcard is Yao Ming.
Note: Of the list of 5,Only Dalembert and Chandler are unrestricted which means anyone can just straight up sign them, while the other players you can sign to offer sheet and there teams have the right to match the sheet.
Ming is unrestricted also but his injury history is also horrible.

The clauses “When Kaman was healthy,” “a few seasons ago,” and “if he can get healthy” are what worries me. Plus, even if Kaman was to get healthy and play at a fairly high level, the Hawks would have to give up, e.g., Zaza AND Marvin for him.
In short: At best, the Hawks would still have one more hole to fill. At worst, Kaman remains injury-prone/a shell of his old self and now the Hawks are worse in two positions.

superiorblogman,
That Monta Ellis deal might not be a bad idea. I think the Hawks need to make a big time move to get a major player. Do you think it is possible that to get Dwight Howard moving a Josh or Horford for him? Okafor watching him against the Lakers he looked so small out there. He is a good shot blocker though. You know who I think Teague can end up being the type of player?Aaron Brooks type of player.
The one thing I do not want is to take a bad contract back especially a long term one. That would hinder their progress to make future moves. The Oden is not a bad idea I would take a 1-2 year chance as far as a deal on him.
northclyde:That is an interesting comparison to Derrick Coleman although Coleman problem was he was never motivated well enough. I dont think that is Josh Smith problem. I think Josh Smith problem is he needs a good teacher and a strong personality.

______________________________________________
When boxing out;
one has to take into account several factors
whether guarding the shooter or not.
*When guarding a non-shooter you are in help position,
therefore you sometimes end up boxing out another man.
*Sometimes when guarding the shooter,
one is out of position due to fronting.
*ergo…It may or may not have anything to do,
with whether or whether not you are guarding
the shooter or non-shooter.
*There are many more situations that could arise
which could impact box-outs;
namely; hedging, switching, doubling, trapping, close-outs,
teammates missing assignments, etc., of which you would
need to be aware and observe in the film room.
*It’s doubtful you have observed that closely.
I contend, Collins is a poor rebounder,
yet does a good to above avg job of boxing out.

By the way, the Hawks should be looking at how Golden State beat the Bulls in a February meeting as the blueprint. We have much better defensive personnel than Golden State we should watch what they did and try to duplicate it. They made Rose turn the ball over 9 x’s and he admitted after that game they did some stuff to him that He had never seen before. He might think he figured it out but we can remind him he did not.

Check it out. Marques Johnson says CHI are overrated (too many wins in a very easy division) and is tempted to consider an upset but Rose’s MVP play is difficult to overrule and should be the deciding factor.
FOR me, the key is NOT TO GET DEMORALIZED by Rose’s play and keep everyone else under control.
Just like against the MAGIC, the KEY is to make Rose work, get tired and remove everyone else from the equation.
IF, we manage to get everyone else to shoot in the .300 or very low .400 the main thing will be our ability to score and be efficient on offense and Rose’s production will be secondary.
Rose can’t do it all, has a bad ankle and if the scoring load is carried only him he will reach the 4th Quarter tired and will be easier to get stops.

Josh may not be 100%, but he’s not hurt to the point where his athletic ability is severely hampered. It’s like JJ’s hand. It may hurt, but he can still shoot if he takes the right types of shots.
Disagree. Josh’s knee injury has severely affected his play from the first half of the season to now. Pretty much killed his transition/alley oop/block game. You can see he hasn’t even attempted to grab a few lobs teammates have thrown for him because he just can’t get up that far right now. I hope its not forever, but he seems to have lost a solid 10 inches on his vertical. Figured he’d be at least 27-28 before the decline.

JoJo, Pape Sy will get run over like a Poppy Seed. He doesnt’ deserve the punishment nor the accolades. No way does he even get to do layups in the layup line.
And if you want to see what Oden is going to cost…..he’s considering testing the FA market next year….and it looks like Portland is offering 4/40….http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/213422/Oden_Looks_At_Free_Agency_As_His_Move
I’m not touching that number. He’s a long way from earning that kind of cash…not getting it, EARNING it.
Hey lewis, Josh may want to be Lamar, but he is more ZBo….he just won’t play to his strengths for 45 mpg. Count the number of wasted possessions per game with Josh next time……
- leading the break to pass to Al in the open court…..rec ball
- hoisting up rocket launchers while he stands on the 3 pt line….he learned this from Marvin.
- his passes to Teague that would have been caught if it were a bit taller Hindrich.
This guy wastes more possessions per 48M than when PG Boris Diaw was a Hawk…Woody had to tell Diaw to shoot the ball during the game…..a vivid memory in my mind. We all see what position Diaw is playing today…he’s on the Eddy Curry weight plan.

In my opinion, JT has an unusual (abnormal) release on his jump shot. – Mandingo
And maybe this is Las Vegas Larry’s problem with Teague. He seems to favor jump shooting above all other skills, and maybe because JT has bad form that’s not going to be easily corrected, Vegas will never trust him. But again, Rondo is not an elite outside shooter but he is an all star point guard. Derek Rose is not an elite outside shooter (although he is making strides) but he is the league MVP. I don’t think Teague is half the creator/pure point guard that either of them is, but HE IS AS FAST AS EITHER ONE.
IMO he hasn’t been afforded that. He may not be the pg of the future but give the guy a shot. – Fan in New Orleans
IMO Jeff Teague IS THE POINT GUARD OF THE FUTURE for the Hawks franchise. We are fortunate to have a two guard that leads the team in assists so we DON’T NEED a pure point guard. We need a DEFENSIVE PRESENCE at the 1, and that is JT’s area of specialization.

On offense, Teague’s ability to make expected passes is probably more of what is hurting him than not having a great jump shot. I forget what game it was (and I mentioned all this on the blog at the time), but in one of the mid-season games in which Teague logged a lot of minutes, he was having a real hard time passing the ball into the post. Al or Josh would have good position, the angle wouldn’t be too bad, Teague would see them in the post, but he just wouldn’t/couldn’t make the pass. This exact sequence happened 3 or 4 times in a short time span. (Almost certainly the play called was for a post up, but Teague just couldn’t deliver.)
On the defensive end, Teague has all the tools to be great. However, he is often slightly out of position (e.g., not having a fundamentally sound angel, spacing) and because of him being out of position he gets beat bad. Now, I have to admit that Teague has looked better on the defensive end after the All Star break. He still finds himself in “no man’s land” from time to time, but, hell, even the better defensive PGs in the league aren’t always in the best position. I am willing to say that Teague is (almost) ready defensively.
These are the type of “inconsistencies” that have kept Teague from becoming a rotational player. His inability to make the pass/execute the called play and his defensive positioning is what has cost him rotational minutes more than anything else.

People are riding the Bulls jock because they have a superstar — superstars almost without exception are needed to win in the playoffs — and the league’s best record. There is a valid point to be made that their record is inflated by their division, but even if you bring their division record down to what the Magic had they would still have an overall record tied with the Heat for best in the conference. Even if you account for their division they are still more than 10 games better than the Hawks on the season.
I do agree that if you get past each team’s best player the Hawks are arguably more talented than the Bulls, but in order for that to mean anything the Hawks will have to shut down the Bulls’ supporting cast the way they shut down the Magic supporting cast. And that’s going to be a lot harder if they can’t single cover Rose the way they did to Dwight.

Well let me ask you this. If Collins is such a great guy that boxes out, why does his man almost ALWAYS kill him on the boards? I mean, I can bring up many examples, from Noah, to Howard, to Andrew Bynum . . guys who all killed him on the boards. And it’s not like Collins is a good help defender either, so who is he helping out to allow his man to get all of those rebounds?
I mean, what’s more silly?
Calling Collins a guy who is good at boxing out, even though his man kills him on the boards? Or saying that he’s more likely to box out a guy who he is guarding after he shot the ball?
If he can’t keep the guy that he’s guarding off the boards, that means that he’s out of position to box the guy out, or even when he does box the guy out, the opposing player is more athletic enough to still get the rebound.
And if neither of those two are the case, and Collins is doing what he supposed to do, then I guess the blame would go on Horford and Smith for not grabbing the rebound? They do actually rebound though, unlike Collins.
Collins does do some good things as a team player, that doesn’t show up on the box score. There’s no doubt about that. But if the opposing team’s offense isn’t being ran through the man that he is guarding, he becomes a big liability out on the court.
He’s not going to get you extra possessions when it comes to offensive rebounds, and he’s not going to end possessions by grabbing defensive rebounds. Even the charges he tend to draw are limited.

Who does he box out though superior?
I mean, I can bring up a clip right now in which in a game we played against the Lakers, Collins was going out to help on a guy, but got back in time to put a body on Bynum. Problem is, he did it very lazily. Ball comes off the rim, and Bynum gets the rebound without even having to jump for the ball.
What Collins does is put a body on people after the shot goes up. That may technically be a “box out”, but if you don’t do it right, the other guy can still get the rebound. Ish . . let me bring the clip up, and see what you think about it.
This is from the Laker blowout right after the All-Star break. You can either watch the entire beatdown, or go to the 2:55 mark of the video.
If you watch the entire video, you will see instances of Collins finding his man and doing a weak box out. But all of those shots went in. But if you go to the 2:55 mark, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about with that dude. Bynum didn’t even have to jump, and Collins reaction time was so slow, he didn’t get his hand up fast enough to get the rebound.
Bynum’s offensive rebound led to a Ron Artest 3.
And Bynum grabbed 15 rebounds that game . . 11 of which came with Collins in the game ( from my review of that game of the play-by-play. Collins only played 15 minutes in that game, and got outrebounded 11 – 4 vs Bynum. But dang, at least Collins did grab 4 rebounds. That’s damn good rebounding from him.
But how does Bynum grab 11 rebounds in 15 minutes vs Collins, if Collins is so great in boxing people out?

It’s hard not to be a little envious at how Memphis is playing and what they have assembled there.
- a go-to low post player who can create his own shot and make it ( Zebo )
- a solid center who can defend, rebound, and score adequately ( Gasol )
- a solid PG that looks to get into the lane and create for others ( Conley )
- a defensive stopper who can guard PGs, SGs, and SFs ( Allen )
- another defensive stopper who can guard SG and SFs ( Battier )
- an offense first guard who can score the basketball ( Mayo )
- and role players who play within their limitations and team structure ( Arthur, Young, Vasquez )
And most of all, they play DEFENSE and REBOUND the basketball.
And all of this without their most athletic and dynamic offensive player not even playing ( Gay )
All 9 guys play together and understand what each can do as individuals. An impressive win by that team today. Just a surgical dismantling of a real good team. I hope we can duplicate what they did tomorrow night. It may not look the same, but maybe we can achieve the same result.

I realize you are the purveyor of all B-ball knowledge ?
” But how does Bynum grab 11 rebounds in 15 minutes vs Collins,
if Collins is so great in boxing people out? ”
Bynum played 26 min. gathered 15 rebs
Collins only played 15 min.
[you *claim A.B. got 11 rebs during those 15 min]
*(that claim sounds absurd – but if you say it’s so) ?
My Much Larger Point ! ! !
Bynum had 15 rebs with 11 being defensive rebs.
(I looked it up)
So, only ” FOUR ” were offensive rebs.
A player can only miss a box-out if it results in an offensive reb.
*[agreed] I don’t care if you do or not – it’s a fact.
So, Collins could have only missed ” FOUR ” box-outs all nite !
If one thinks logically & rationally;
Collins = 15 min
Bynum = 26 min
one would think that maybe 1 or 2 were -vs- another player.
Now we are talking about him missing two or three box outs.

****************************
LOL . . I missed this.
So you’re praising Collins for missing 4 box outs in 15 minutes? So that means had Collins played 30 minutes, he could’ve possibly given up 8 offensive rebounds to Bynum. In what basketball world is this a good thing Grandad?
If he missed 4 box outs in 15 minutes, that’s absolutely horrible . . seeing that Bynum averages 4 offensive rebounds in 30 minutes. Bynum reached his season average vs Collins in half the time. And that’s the reason why when we played the Lakers two weeks later in Atlanta, Collins didn’t even play.
Bynum still killed us on the boards ( 16 rebounds . . 4 offensive . . in 35 minutes ). But at least Drew had sense enough to play Horford at center and give Zaza extended minutes, to try to offset what Bynum was doing. Horford had 9 rebounds in that game. Zaza had 10 rebounds in 22 minutes ( 6 offensive ). And instead of us getting blown out from the jump, the Lakers gradually pulled away from us, taking command in the 3rd quarter.
LOL @ praising a dude for “only” giving up 4 offensive rebounds an 11 defensive rebounds in 15 minutes. Come on Grandad. You know better than that.

Technically . . Bynum had 2 offensive rebouns and 9 defensive rebounds vs Collins. But that doesn’t make it any better. For a guy who has no offense ran through him, you’d think that his box outs would prevent him from getting defensive rebounds. Someone else should’ve been gobbling up the defensive boards if Bynum had a body on him.
But I guess the excuse would be that Collins was setting good screens for our “motion offense”, and those screens had him out of position to put a body on Bynum when a shot was missed.

Good win by Memphis. I have watched them a lot the past year and a half. The thing with them when you have two inside guys like that and play defense and have a solid point guard, ut can really makes a difference. . I think they play better without Gay. Vasquez is a good point guard and Conley the way he play reminds me a lot of Kenny Anderson. I liked him at Ohip State. Looking at Memphis and Oklahoma City those teams will be the future teams of the West while I think the Heat Bulls and to a lesser extent Hawks, Knicks Pacers, Philly will be the next teams in the east battling for the next 4-5 years. I dont count the Lakers or Celtics because they are on the downside of their championship runs

Grandad . . you’ve watched much more basketball than I have. You got to see a player that I’ve only get to see on youtube. And that’s the great Bill Russell.
You think Bill Russell would be cool with letting his man dominate him on the boards, even when he puts a body on him? How about Wilt? How about Moses Malone? Shoot . . how about Dennis Rodman?
To say that defensive rebounds have no merit in the convo is just false. If Collins boxes his man out, and that prevents him from getting the rebound, that means that some other player should be gobbling up the board.
And maybe, just maybe, we get an offensive board because Collins successfully prevents Bynum from getting to that rebound. But in that game, that obviously wasn’t the case.

Brig . . the Lakers and Celtics will always be able to acquire the star type players though. I could easily see the Lakers acquiring a Chris Paul or Dwight Howard, because they have an asset in Bynum that they can trade to a team that could potentially lose their star player for nothing.
If you’re the Lakers for example, you’d tell Orlando that Bynum or Gasol can be had in a sign and trade for Howard ( especially if it is believed that he won’t re-sign with the Illusion .. aka the Magic ). If you’re the Magic, how could you turn that down? Instead of losing Howard for nothing, you gain a Gasol or Bynum? To make the numbers work, maybe you throw in a Ron Artest.
Either way, the Lakers would be set for the next 3 – 4 years. You’d still have Kobe, who may still be playing at an all-star level 4 years from now, and you add a frontline beast in Howard. Even if Kobe is the complimentary player by that point, the Lakers would be a factor.
Or you could make that same type of deal with New Orleans, and acquire Chris Paul.
In Boston’s case, they have a tremendous expiring contract in Garnett next year ( 21.2 million ). And Ray Allen’s deal expires next year too ( 10 million ). So if Orlando wanted significant cap relief, they could trade a number of their players to the Celtics ( including Howard ), and rebuild. If Boston fails, look for KG to be moved to a team wanting cap relief, and the Celtics receiving a dang good player in return.
In my opinion, Boston nor LA are going anywhere anytime soon. They will simply reload. Both teams have too many tradeable assets that they can use.

Collins may have started 10 games all year and the hawks did good when he started, HORFORD, JOSH, is just to small to defend the paint thats why the hawks was rank 27th in rebounding because of the smallish line up, last year in the playoffs agianst the magic horford look like he wanted no part of dwight and it showed because all of dwight point where dunk, and hawks loss by AVG 25 points a game.

northclyde good points but cant you see okc or memphis if they keep their teams intact and make moves here and there win a title within the next 5 years? What about teams like the Heat or Chicago or even the Knicks if they were to get say CP3?I see you on the Lakers if they get Howard or CP3 but what for argument sake say the Hawks could get Howard?I see Deron staying in NJ cp3 possibly ny i think Chicago is set other than getting a two guard. Mr. Knight . . nice for you to drop in. But have you been reading anything that I’ve typed about Jason Collins for the last 2 – 3 months? Jason is most effective when he can guard a center that has offense ran through him in the halfcourt. Dwight Howard represents one of those types of players. And while Collins didn’t necessarily stop him, he did do enough to disrupt his game, especially in the turnover department. Collins was definitely needed vs the Illusion.
The Bulls, however, are not the Illusion. And Noah isn’t Howard. Noah is a garbage rebounding collecting big, who is extremely active off of pick and rolls and and run the floor. Unfortunately for us, Jason Collins does not fare well vs those types of players.
Before this season, Horford pretty much had his way with Noah.
LOL @ Paul Pierce’s soft azz. That was not a flagrant foul. That was a foul preventing him from getting the shot up, even if it was from 20 feet away. So does he get suspended for that minor headbutt he gave James Jones, like Zaza did with Richardson?

Attention: Larry Drew
Whether you win or lose tomorrow, after the post-game presser, please don’t use the word/term “irregardless” when answering questions, making points or providing comments. “Irregardless” is a non-standard English term and considered a poor choice word. The term “irregardless” is also deemed as redundant and is usually used to express emphasis.(Technically, the word, “irregardless,” does not exist.) You remind me of Sarah Palin and her use of the term “refudiate” (a vulgar portmanteau [word] of “refute” and “repudiate”). Please use either the terms “irrespective” or “regardless.” I am not a grammarian, I do not possess a Ph.D., in English, and I am not some self-proclaimed expert in the English language. I make mistakes all the time. Just stop using the term “irregardless.” I want you, LD, to present yourself to the national media as intelligent, knowledg[e]able, educated, qualified, dignified, sophisticated and not as some token hire. Maybe at the end of this year’s Hawks’ playoff run, the powers-that-be may officially admit “irregardless” to the English language like, I think, they (officially or unofficially) admitted “refudiate” for Sarah Palin. @ Grandad . . . it’s kind of hard to argue against physical evidence, isn’t it? The great offensive rebounders that have every played in the NBA have found a way to box out a defensive player, and get an offensive rebound . . or prevent that defensive player from getting the rebound.
Rebounding is one of the biggest issues we have as a team, both on the offensive and defensive end. It wasn’t a coincidence that we won Game 6, when we gathered 14 offensive rebounds. Rebounding was the difference in Memphis beating San Antonio, and winning Game 1 today in Oklahoma City.
Players who are on offense box out players who are on defense all the time, especially when they desire to get the offensive rebound. And that’s the major issue with Noah . . because he will consistently do this when the Bulls are on offense. And when he is on defense, he’ll be all over the boards.
Great rebounders tend to play the same way on both ends of the floor. And I would think that a player who fundamentally boxes out on one end, would do the same thing on the other end, especially when no offense is being run through him.

And this isn’t a cop out.
But, Drew’s gonna plug a 2nd year PG into the lineup for some of the biggest games this year for Hawks when he’s shown no trust in him all season. So now, if Teague doesn’t perform up to everybody’s standards, I can already see people coming out bashing the kid. But remember, before you bash Teague, bash coach for not giving this kid enough PT to prepare for a moment like this.
But, I’m optimistic Teague will be better than most might think. He might not give you the jumpers Hinrich can, but he’ll most surely add other elements to the offense with his ability to penetrate and also possibly kick our transition game up a notch.
We’ll see.

Grandad,
You bring up good points you know who brought the iso type of play in the league?Jordan did?I dont fault Jordan that is his style but before him game was much more team oriented. Also kids dont want to be two way players they just care about offense. That is why you dont see any inside players epsecially centers. They want to shoot jump shots and pick and pop. Even if you go back to the 90’s remember all the big man that were inside players. You can count the ones now on your hand and they are really finesse players as big men

Having coached at the HS level,
youngsters (6-8 and up) and I had a bunch,
all saw themselves as small forwards [3's].
You had to almost beat ‘em with a 2 X 4 to
get ‘em in the post.
“But coach, I’m a shooter”
Duncan & Garnett both 7 ftrs. refused to be listed at 7ft.
Both will go down in history as power forwards [4's].
-Why- ?
If Russell were listed as a power forward,
he would clearly be the best of all time.
It baffles me.
Just do it / just play ball / team ball.

Cameo, Roger Troutman & Zapp, The Dazz Band all opened The Show for:
The Gap Band! at The Bell Auditorium in Augusta, GA
somewhere around 1976 or so. I’ll never forget it because that was my first concert @ age 13. My Mamma let me go there with my big cousins who had driver’s licenses around age 16.

Just left Taco Mac (ate too much and feeling miserable), I hate that.
I heard Spolestra say, “Wade has had a few days of introspective on how the Celtics defend him. They play the best defense on him and Wade has figured how to “crack the code.”

“Cracked the Code” is a very interesting way of seeing things.
Mr. Johnson needs to sample that idea and stop letting games occur where defenders thwart his entire offensive game in games.

I don’t see what Pierce did wrong to be ejected. Did he say something?
I didn’t see his lips moving. Very bad call and may have cost them a win.
They got it down to 8 with plenty of time left. Were the refs holding a grudge from the previous little head butt? LOL! Trying to be like

northcyde,
Not that I disagree completely from what you say about Collins but doesn’t this prove you wrong?
http://www.nba.com/statscube/team-vs-player.html#Bulls-vs-Jason-Collins|1610612741,2215;season=r
You may have already dispelled the contents of this page, but since I have not been following the blog close, I didn’t notice it.
The stats cube says that with Collins on the floor, CHI rebounds per 48 minutes less than with Collins on the bench.
Collins is obviously not a very good rebounder but he does influence space in the paint. Also, he draws charges like few and not only from bigs.
He looks slower than he in fact is since he beats even small agile players to the spot.
Someone said around here that he should be on the floor when Kurt Thomas is inserted in the game.
Maybe. But against K. Thomas I would prefer to see Etan. Both are slow and rugged and would neutralise one another, so Kurt Thomas would not punk Al as he usually does.

I never saw that show “Unsung” but, I will definitely watch it next time.
I’m watching Terry Crews now. Terry is one lucky dude.
How did he get on? I think it’s his body built with loads of muscles.
What a late bloomer?
Reminds me of Danny Glover, dude got his first role at age 45 years.
Wasn’t Danny washing dishes in LA, when that call came from Spielberg for: The Color Purple?

How terrible is LD as an Head Coach?
Listen (read):
“The decision that I have to kind of ponder is whether to disrupt what we do off the bench versus just going back and starting [Crawford],” Drew said. “The last few days, we’ve looked at both situations. The things we’ve done, we’ve used them in the starting lineup and out of the starting lineup.”
With the above he is clearly stating that he will only start Teague not because he has trust in him as a valid replacement for Hinrich BUT ONLY BECAUSE he may not want to disrupt Jamal’s thing off the bench.
Heck, why doesn’t he say out loud in a press conference: I believe that Teague sucks and I prefer to go to war against a PG who is the league’s MVP with a makeshift PG who is unable to guard his own shadow…

I’ve seen every episode of Chris and Erkle just this past 11 months.
Great shows. I am catching up on Sanford & Son and Good Times now.
LOL! But, Terry Crews was in Fridays? Wow! I thought he was a new kid on the block. I love this man’s work. Also, because he looks like an average Joe and drives a Toyota Prius. Nice and sensible guy.

I know this may sound offensive to some but Terrence Alan “Terry” Crews like Thomas “Tiny” Lister aka D-Bo, Michael Clarke Duncan, Irving Rameses “Ving” Rhames, and to some extent Shaquille O’Neal, who has also acted briefly, exemplifies/propagates the Hollywood image of the stereotypical big, black, buffed, muscle-bound, controlled, field-hand, buck slave type of Negro. I’m sorry but that’s my opinion. I’m such a bitter, angry dude. LOL

The Distinguished Gentleman!
On BET now. Never saw this movie before. Eddie Murray is a straight up fool! I personally met him in 1986 when I worked at:
The Ritz Carlton – Buckhead. 8 Years as Banquet Captain & picked up extra work in Room Service. Eddie’s brother called up an order of
assorted English Teas. Eddie was like 5′5″ short and signed the check with NO tip. I had to write it in, I had to. Ms. Mary wasn’t serving rich teas for free. I had to get mine. LOL!
Eddie was dating Mayor Andrew Young daughter back then and their room was in her name. I met a ton of celebs, never asked for one autograph, unless it was on a blank check with:
Pay to the order of: Me!
I met The Detroit Pistons Basketball Team, Bill Laimbeer and all those guys. They looked tired from playing ball, tipped well and were very professional. And, very tall. Those guys were Champions for real.
Best, most fun job I ever had. I was never star struck and always felt like I was a star myself, an unknown star in my own rights.

Just check Meyers and relax man. Just relax.
Crews on white chicks does not fulfill the stereotype you described.
Yes, he is buff and that is part of the part, but it is ALL THE REST that he brings to that part which make it hystorical (hysterically historical).

Wow! Thanks for that research on Crews.
I see a lot of independent films work and I was just wondering, “Has this
man ever turned anything down?” Straight hustling, I ain’t mad at nobody.
Type-Casted for real. The thing I loved about Madonna and Michael Jackson, was that they were ultra-selective when it came to songs, music, performances and venues. Extremely selective and control maniacs at the highest level.
Genius!

The stage is set. If the Hawks want to play in the Eastern Conference Finals this year, they must do exactly what they did in the Orlando series. Go on the road in Chicago and split by taking one game in Chi-Town. By doing that you have taken the home court away from the Bulls. Then go to your home court and win the next 2 game, putting you up in the series 3-1 AND THUS giving you a 95% chance out of 100 to win the series. Trust me folks, that formula works every time. Then if you slip in Chicago and you are down 3-2, close out your opponent in game 6 at home and you have wrapped up the series. This strategy worked well in Orlando and I trust it will be duplicated in Chicago. Oh, one other thing. Make sure you double and triple team Derrick Rose and thereby taking the ball out of his hands so that he wont beat you by himself. Boozer is as cold as ice so you wont have to worry about him. Hawks should win the series in 6. Go Hawks.
