7:30 p.m. UPDATE: Hawks say Kirk Hinrich is doubtful to play in series vs. Bulls because of “significant strain” to hamstring.
Kirk Hinrich had an MRI this afternoon. The Hawks haven’t released the results yet but say they expect to announce something today. I’m told it didn’t look good for Hinrich last night but there was more optimism today because he was moving better.
If Hinrich can’t play or is very limited, the Hawks are in serious trouble against the Bulls. I’m assuming they can’t suddenly change their offensive habits to the point where they can score efficiently against the league’s best D. They need Hinrich for scoring, too, because if you are going to be a jump-shooting team it’s best to send out as many jump shooters as possible, especially one capable of getting his own.
So it seems Atlanta’s best chance in this series is to play rugged defense and pull out some grinding games. They did that against the Magic but the Dwight Defense is null against Chicago, which plays through D-Rose instead of the post. Among Atlanta’s guards, Hinrich is their best chance to slow D-Rose–if not by staying in front of him, then by going under screens and then recovering to challenge his (so-so) jump shot. As Hinrich showed during the Orlando series, he’s pretty good at that.
Hinrich’s availability is so crucial, in fact, that L.D. and his staff couldn’t really make a lot of decisions on their game plans today because they didn’t know if they’d have Hinrich.
“It certainly changes things,” Drew said. “Hopefully he will be able to go but if he’s not we will have to make an adjustment. Not knowing what we will do at that point, we will talk about it as a staff and then make a decision. We are looking at matchups to see what will work best for us and not really knowing if Kirk can go, can’t go, play some or can’t play at all—a lot of that will change things.”
If Hinrich can’t play or is ineffective, the other options to defend Rose are Teague, J.J., Jamal, and Damien.
L.D. hasn’t put much trust in Teague all season and now would be asking him to guard the best offensive point guard in the league.
“We’ve been talking to Teague already, getting his mind prepared,” Jamal said. “He understands the challenge at hand. I think he’s prepared himself for the opportunity. I think he got a little down when he was not paying as much. Sometimes things work out in strange ways. Now he gets his change to play.”
J.J. doesn’t like checking points and has proven to be effective at it only in small stretches. Plus the Hawks are going to need all the points they can get and tasking J.J. with chasing Rose through screens and also carrying his usual offensive burden is a lot to ask.
“I am sure through course of the series he will spend time on [Rose],” Drew said. “There is a high probability a few guys will see time on him. [The Bulls] put you in a situation where they do force you to switch. Joe has guarded point guards before; he’s comfortable defending point guards. Hopefully it won’t be much. I’d like to keep him off of him.”
Damien generally has fared better against opponents he can body up rather than those who require quick feet. Jamal had his moments playing acceptable team defense against the Magic but clearly this is not an assignment for him.
The pick-and-roll alignment the Hawks used against Jameer and the Magic probably doesn’t make sense. Noah isn’t a big threat on the roll–he’s scored 1.09 points per possession, according to Synergy Sports Technology, but only had 61 attempts. Rose is generally less concerned with kicking out to 3-point shooters than with getting to the basket for scores (he was third among point guards in field-goals per game at the rim with 3.8 and averaged five against the Hawks) or drawing fouls (.35 free-throw rate overall, .32 against the Hawks).
And, anyway, Rose has been much more efficient scoring in isolation (1.09 points per possession, ranked No. 4 in the league) than on screen-rolls (.87 ppp, ranked 45th). It could get ugly for the Hawks if the Bulls clear out for Rose and an Atlanta guard is forced to defend him in space.
There’s some sentiment in the Hawks’ locker room to play a zone against the Bulls. Good luck keeping the Bulls off the glass with that strategy. They were the fourth-best offensive rebounding team this season and they hammered the Hawks on the board in all three meetings this season.
“We have to come up with a game plan to try to slow down the potential MVP,” L.D. said. “It won’t be an easy job; it’s going to be tough. He’s seen probably every conceivable defense there is. One guy won’t do it. It will take a total team effort.”
True, but that effort would appear to be doomed without Hinrich.

I wouldn’t mind that at all JeJe. If Drew still wants to stay big, put Zaza in the middle and let him battle with Noah for a while. See if he can get under Joakim’s skin, while getting rebounds in the process.

Good win by Memphis. I have watched them a lot the past year and a half. The thing with them when you have two inside guys like that and play defense and have a solid point guard, ut can really makes a difference. . I think they play better without Gay. Vasquez is a good point guard and Conley the way he play reminds me a lot of Kenny Anderson. I liked him at Ohip State. Looking at Memphis and Oklahoma City those teams will be the future teams of the West while I think the Heat Bulls and to a lesser extent Hawks, Knicks Pacers, Philly will be the next teams in the east battling for the next 4-5 years. I dont count the Lakers or Celtics because they are on the downside of their championship runs

Grandad . . you’ve watched much more basketball than I have. You got to see a player that I’ve only get to see on youtube. And that’s the great Bill Russell.
You think Bill Russell would be cool with letting his man dominate him on the boards, even when he puts a body on him? How about Wilt? How about Moses Malone? Shoot . . how about Dennis Rodman?
To say that defensive rebounds have no merit in the convo is just false. If Collins boxes his man out, and that prevents him from getting the rebound, that means that some other player should be gobbling up the board.
And maybe, just maybe, we get an offensive board because Collins successfully prevents Bynum from getting to that rebound. But in that game, that obviously wasn’t the case.

Brig . . the Lakers and Celtics will always be able to acquire the star type players though. I could easily see the Lakers acquiring a Chris Paul or Dwight Howard, because they have an asset in Bynum that they can trade to a team that could potentially lose their star player for nothing.
If you’re the Lakers for example, you’d tell Orlando that Bynum or Gasol can be had in a sign and trade for Howard ( especially if it is believed that he won’t re-sign with the Illusion .. aka the Magic ). If you’re the Magic, how could you turn that down? Instead of losing Howard for nothing, you gain a Gasol or Bynum? To make the numbers work, maybe you throw in a Ron Artest.
Either way, the Lakers would be set for the next 3 – 4 years. You’d still have Kobe, who may still be playing at an all-star level 4 years from now, and you add a frontline beast in Howard. Even if Kobe is the complimentary player by that point, the Lakers would be a factor.
Or you could make that same type of deal with New Orleans, and acquire Chris Paul.
In Boston’s case, they have a tremendous expiring contract in Garnett next year ( 21.2 million ). And Ray Allen’s deal expires next year too ( 10 million ). So if Orlando wanted significant cap relief, they could trade a number of their players to the Celtics ( including Howard ), and rebuild. If Boston fails, look for KG to be moved to a team wanting cap relief, and the Celtics receiving a dang good player in return.
In my opinion, Boston nor LA are going anywhere anytime soon. They will simply reload. Both teams have too many tradeable assets that they can use.

If a player is on offense;
how is he supposed to box-out a player who’s on defense?

Collins may have started 10 games all year and the hawks did good when he started, HORFORD, JOSH, is just to small to defend the paint thats why the hawks was rank 27th in rebounding because of the smallish line up, last year in the playoffs agianst the magic horford look like he wanted no part of dwight and it showed because all of dwight point where dunk, and hawks loss by AVG 25 points a game.

northclyde good points but cant you see okc or memphis if they keep their teams intact and make moves here and there win a title within the next 5 years? What about teams like the Heat or Chicago or even the Knicks if they were to get say CP3?I see you on the Lakers if they get Howard or CP3 but what for argument sake say the Hawks could get Howard?I see Deron staying in NJ cp3 possibly ny i think Chicago is set other than getting a two guard. I am not sure with Boston cause it will be hard to replace Garnet and Allen and even Pierce cause they are on the downside of their careers

Mr. Knight . . nice for you to drop in. But have you been reading anything that I’ve typed about Jason Collins for the last 2 – 3 months? Jason is most effective when he can guard a center that has offense ran through him in the halfcourt. Dwight Howard represents one of those types of players. And while Collins didn’t necessarily stop him, he did do enough to disrupt his game, especially in the turnover department. Collins was definitely needed vs the Illusion.
The Bulls, however, are not the Illusion. And Noah isn’t Howard. Noah is a garbage rebounding collecting big, who is extremely active off of pick and rolls and and run the floor. Unfortunately for us, Jason Collins does not fare well vs those types of players.
Before this season, Horford pretty much had his way with Noah.
LOL @ Paul Pierce’s soft azz. That was not a flagrant foul. That was a foul preventing him from getting the shot up, even if it was from 20 feet away. So does he get suspended for that minor headbutt he gave James Jones, like Zaza did with Richardson?

Attention: Larry Drew
Whether you win or lose tomorrow, after the post-game presser, please don’t use the word/term “irregardless” when answering questions, making points or providing comments. “Irregardless” is a non-standard English term and considered a poor choice word. The term “irregardless” is also deemed as redundant and is usually used to express emphasis.(Technically, the word, “irregardless,” does not exist.) You remind me of Sarah Palin and her use of the term “refudiate” (a vulgar portmanteau [word] of “refute” and “repudiate”). Please use either the terms “irrespective” or “regardless.” I am not a grammarian, I do not possess a Ph.D., in English, and I am not some self-proclaimed expert in the English language. I make mistakes all the time. Just stop using the term “irregardless.” I want you, LD, to present yourself to the national media as intelligent, knowledg[e]able, educated, qualified, dignified, sophisticated and not as some token hire. Maybe at the end of this year’s Hawks’ playoff run, the powers-that-be may officially admit “irregardless” to the English language like, I think, they (officially or unofficially) admitted “refudiate” for Sarah Palin. @ Grandad . . . it’s kind of hard to argue against physical evidence, isn’t it? The great offensive rebounders that have every played in the NBA have found a way to box out a defensive player, and get an offensive rebound . . or prevent that defensive player from getting the rebound.
Rebounding is one of the biggest issues we have as a team, both on the offensive and defensive end. It wasn’t a coincidence that we won Game 6, when we gathered 14 offensive rebounds. Rebounding was the difference in Memphis beating San Antonio, and winning Game 1 today in Oklahoma City.
Players who are on offense box out players who are on defense all the time, especially when they desire to get the offensive rebound. And that’s the major issue with Noah . . because he will consistently do this when the Bulls are on offense. And when he is on defense, he’ll be all over the boards.
Great rebounders tend to play the same way on both ends of the floor. And I would think that a player who fundamentally boxes out on one end, would do the same thing on the other end, especially when no offense is being run through him.

I’ll go ahead and say this.
And this isn’t a cop out.
But, Drew’s gonna plug a 2nd year PG into the lineup for some of the biggest games this year for Hawks when he’s shown no trust in him all season. So now, if Teague doesn’t perform up to everybody’s standards, I can already see people coming out bashing the kid. But remember, before you bash Teague, bash coach for not giving this kid enough PT to prepare for a moment like this.
But, I’m optimistic Teague will be better than most might think. He might not give you the jumpers Hinrich can, but he’ll most surely add other elements to the offense with his ability to penetrate and also possibly kick our transition game up a notch.
We’ll see.

The most amazing thing about today’s players
[you alluded to Russell & Chamberlain]
is the sissyfication of the players. Period.

Grandad,
You bring up good points you know who brought the iso type of play in the league?Jordan did?I dont fault Jordan that is his style but before him game was much more team oriented. Also kids dont want to be two way players they just care about offense. That is why you dont see any inside players epsecially centers. They want to shoot jump shots and pick and pop. Even if you go back to the 90’s remember all the big man that were inside players. You can count the ones now on your hand and they are really finesse players as big men

Not that I disagree completely from what you say about Collins but doesn’t this prove you wrong?
http://www.nba.com/statscube/team-vs-player.html#Bulls-vs-Jason-Collins|1610612741,2215;season=r
You may have already dispelled the contents of this page, but since I have not been following the blog close, I didn’t notice it.
The stats cube says that with Collins on the floor, CHI rebounds per 48 minutes less than with Collins on the bench.
Collins is obviously not a very good rebounder but he does influence space in the paint. Also, he draws charges like few and not only from bigs.
He looks slower than he in fact is since he beats even small agile players to the spot.
Someone said around here that he should be on the floor when Kurt Thomas is inserted in the game.
Maybe. But against K. Thomas I would prefer to see Etan. Both are slow and rugged and would neutralise one another, so Kurt Thomas would not punk Al as he usually does.

How terrible is LD as an Head Coach?
Listen (read):
“The decision that I have to kind of ponder is whether to disrupt what we do off the bench versus just going back and starting [Crawford],” Drew said. “The last few days, we’ve looked at both situations. The things we’ve done, we’ve used them in the starting lineup and out of the starting lineup.”
With the above he is clearly stating that he will only start Teague not because he has trust in him as a valid replacement for Hinrich BUT ONLY BECAUSE he may not want to disrupt Jamal’s thing off the bench.
Heck, why doesn’t he say out loud in a press conference: I believe that Teague sucks and I prefer to go to war against a PG who is the league’s MVP with a makeshift PG who is unable to guard his own shadow…

VaVa & Brigadierjerry!
Have I been living under a rock? The NFL? Dang! I first saw him on
Everybody Hates Chris … a show I only discovered 10 months ago along with Family Matters. When, these shows first came on, I was in the Clubs and Partying I guess.
I’ve seen every episode of Chris and Erkle just this past 11 months.
Great shows. I am catching up on Sanford & Son and Good Times now.
LOL! But, Terry Crews was in Fridays? Wow! I thought he was a new kid on the block. I love this man’s work. Also, because he looks like an average Joe and drives a Toyota Prius. Nice and sensible guy.
Classy not Flashy.
Thanks for schooling me.
