Magic at Atlanta Hawks Game 6: Larry Drew’s move in ‘chess match’

Hawks players have said more than once that a playoff series is like a “chess match.”

Your move, L.D.

The Hawks have had success defending Orlando’s pick-and-rolls by frequently using a funky scheme, as detailed by Brett Koremenos at hoopspeak.com. (H/T Hoopinion) The alignment didn’t work so well in Game 5, though.

It’s a strategy that has been effective in large part because Hinrich, J.J., Smoove and (sometimes) Jamal all can cover enough ground to make the switch and run out to corner shooters. Those guys also are tall enough that they can bother the shooter even if they don’t make it all the way out. It also helps that the corner defenders who pinch in to help against the ball handler are big guys.

Watching the Magic’s Game 5 pick-and-rolls on Synergy Sports Technology, I noticed that Redick and Jameer changed up. Instead of going all the way to the rim and either looking for the corner 3 (which the Hawks have covered well) or try to get to the basket (where help awaits), Redick and Jameer put on the brakes and shot step-back Js.

Twin and Zaza weren’t mobile enough to challenge those shots while also protecting against Dwight’s roll to the basket. The corner help man couldn’t get over to contest. And the ball handler’s man was trailing the play (and also had to be in position to switch and run to the corner on a kick-out).

It was a subtle change. The Magic got their offense rolling because their guards made better decisions.

“That was clear,” Stan Van Gundy said. “I did not think we forced plays and I didn’t think we got going too fast. We had very few turnovers and, for the most part, we were making simple, solid basketball plays.

“When you get into this mentality with your back to the wall, we didn’t want ‘hero plays’ where a guy is like, ‘I will just take on two guys and score over them.’ That doesn’t end up working. You want to play your game, make simple plays, take open shots and live with the result.”

So how do the Hawks counter that chess move from the Magic?

“You adjust,” L.D. said today, smiling.

Van Gundy noted there are a finite number of (realistic) ways to defend the most common play in basketball.

“There is only so many ways you can guard a pick-and-roll,” Van Gundy said. “We all will make adjustments and try to do what’s best. But it’s not like I have a way to play the pick-and-roll that Larry and his players have never seen and we are going to shock them with it tonight. And it’s not like Larry has got a way to play the pick-and-roll that is going to shock our guys, where Jameer is going to say, ‘Oh, my God I’ve never seen this before.’

“You have got to make plays.”

Notes

  • Smoove wasn’t happy about Mike Bianchi’s “Atlanta Birdbrains” column in the Orlando Sentinel. Bianchi was in the locker room today and Josh gave him some typically-candid and colorful feedback.
  • “I’m not sure how you’ve got reporters calling people idiots and dummies,” Josh said in an interview. “I don’t understand how people can challenge somebody’s intelligence when you are talking about a basketball game. Some people take it too far.”
  • L.D. on his team’s focus: “I think everybody is ready. I’ve seen this group in this situation before. In the playoffs this is the type of position you want to be in. We have an opportunity to close on our home floor. It’s not easy to close out anybody but I’d rather do it in these circumstances.”
  • Jamal: “It’s us against the world. It’s funny how before the series everybody was all about Orlando. Then we went up 3-1 and it went back to us, and now it’s back the other way. They are fighting a hungry team.”
  • The Magic sent more doubles at Jamal in Game 5. “I watched a lot of tape and I will adjust,” he said. “I’m excited. I see how I can take advantage of different things and get myself going and get my teammates involved and come out with a victory.”
  • L.D. though the Hawks played too fast in Game 5. He’s OK with them pushing the pace at home: “We definitely want to get the crowd involved with the pace. We want to get up-and-down and use our athleticism. But we’ve got to be smart about it and not get caught up in a jump-shooting fest with that team.”
  • Al on his sagging shooting (19 of 49) since Game 1: “They’ve done a great job defending. This is a game that I’m coming in with the same approach. I’m just going to make sure I get myself going.”
  • J-Rich is expected to play after cutting his foot in some glass on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s OK,” Van Gundy said. “We didn’t have him go through the walk-through [today] because we didn’t want to risk him opening up the stitches.”
  • Van Gundy on the Magic’s shooting in Game 5: “I was only half-joking when I said a lot of this game comes down to making shots or missing shots.”
  • Magic CEO Bob Vander Weider told the Orlando Sentinel that he and team owner Rich DeVos are happy with Van Gundy and GM Otis Smith.
  • “I can laughingly say that votes of confidence are the kiss of death,” Van Gundy said today. “I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. But knowing Bob and taking him at face value after working in the organization, you are always happy when your bosses are happy with you. But that’s not where my head is at. I just want to win the series.”
  • The Magic won’t necessarily go back to a Dwight-centric offense after they had success scoring other ways. “We found an offensive attack that was working,” Van Gundy said. “It’s not about who scores. We had our best offensive game of the year.”

From previous blog:

JeJe,

“If they do P&R and Collins is in, we are screwed because he cannot move AT ALL”

Actually you are dead wrong, IMO.

Collins may not be fast but he moves his feet and shows his hands in the right defensive postures a lot better than most players in the whole league.

That is why he got more charges called in our favor than all other Hawks put together before the Hinrich trade (who is the close second).

If correctly assisted by the Guard who is playing with him the pick and roll D he is not such a liability that justifies him not being on the floor at all out of being afraid of the PnR.

I really hope my attitude changes when I walk into the arena tonight. I hope I go through the Section 303 portal and suddenly start to believe that tonight will be anything but a disaster. That’s what I hope. Right now, just not feeling it. Watching the Hawks quit on Tuesday took nearly all the wind out of my sails.

We’ll see….they act like they have a plan going into tonight. We’ll see….could be the last home game this group plays together in Philips. They lose and this team gets blown up.

thanks for the link bigdave.

From Sekou;

You have to wonder if Joe Johnson is watching what’s going on around the league right now, if he knows what time it is for players of his ilk?

Surely he’s seen the highlights. He’s witnessed the work guys like Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Zach Randolph, Brandon Roy and so many others have done these past two weeks.

The Hawks will need more than just an average Joe Johnson to finish this job and finish off the Magic. They need the All-Star, the wunderkind that wore No. 2 for the Hawks in January and averaged 26 points on 50 percent shooting form the floor while leading them on a near month-long tear. They need the Johnson that helped them win Game 1 of this series in Orlando with those 25 points on 9-for-16 shooting.

What won’t work is the Johnson we’ve seen since then, the one averaging 17 points and shooting a combined 23-for-65 (35.4 percent) from the floor, the one who scored just five points in a blowout Game 5 loss.

The Johnson that plays without any emotion, with that blank stare on his face, will do the Hawks no good tonight. If ever there was a time for Johnson to step out of character and show his fangs for all to see, this is it. .

http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2011/04/28/hawks-need-more-than-average-joe/

I hope JJ can get it going early, becuase that will open things up for the other guys. As a matter of fact, the team needs to get it going early. If they don’t, I can see the fans gettng real quiet and restless. And even if we lose, it should NOT be because JJ had a bad game.

Except for January, JJ has struggled. If he has a big game tonight, I think all will be forgotten….until game 1 against the Bulls

“L.D. on his team’s focus: “I think everybody is ready. I’ve seen this group in this situation before. ” This is what scares me. You have said this before all the games, Larry. And you also said how you didn’t think they could flip the switch, then come playoff win #1 – you had all the confidence that they could do it, etc, etc. I don’t believe you have any idea what this group can do if you are sure they are ready because you’ve been there 7 years. Other teams don’t have the confidence to say they are going to see you in round 2 or openly question whether or not you will fight unless they know something about your team that you seemingly don’t. Let’s be honest – tonight is a referendum on the Hawks. If they lose tonight by anything but the greatest effort put forth by the Magic, put a stake in the heart of anything positive you can say about this team. You can’t have a team, its fans, its coaches, and the media question whether you can compete and then not compete on your home court.

@Section 303. Reading your post makes me almost sad. Because you are investing hard earned money in this team. My investment is just time in front of the TV and the occasional game. For you to be so down on their prospects is testimony to how much good will this core has wasted over the past 2 years. And what a horrible job the ownership group has done protecting and growing their investment. I also feel that they will get embarassed again the next 2 games. My son calls me a fair weather fan. I think I am a realist. This team has laid down so many times it becomes almost second nature. I’d like to be proven wrong but the bottom line is this is a very flawed core with little or no upside. Unless they can win a title this year there’s little hope for the future. UGH!!!!

come on guys,

i know we just got beat up but did we expect to win in a do or die situation against orlando on their home floor???
the difference was they hit shots and we did not …..it simple they hit 7 more 3 pointes than us thats enough to put us in a very close game.
hawks will win at home thursday in a tough game bc they know if they lose they will not win in game 7 in orlando.
i think with howard on the floor that slows down their offense, if hes in the game they dont shoot as many 3 pointers we cover them better bc of ono on one coverage of howard.

i said before the series hawks win in 6 and they will close it out in front of a spectacular crowd..
so guys lets show up to phillips arena a cheer on our hawks to win, bc we are the sixth man

@JOEY1…U are correct sir. The problem is that it should not be a contest of who hits the long shots. I think Orlando was pretty good at that during the regular season, and it is the easiest chance they have of winning. If the Hawks play ANY OTHER type of ball but shoot-em-up they have the clear advantage. But when they see the other team making 3’s, they are fatally attracted to it.

Hordford’s midrange jumper is the 2nd most effective midrange jumper in the league, and people are saying that his midrange jumper shouldn’t be his first option? I don’t get it. Yes, Horford needs to play more aggressively. Yes, he needs to not be afraid to bang inside. But that mid-range jumper is his bread and butter. He should have the green light to light it up.

Problem is Al is not going to put on 10 more pounds by tip off tonight. He is not going to develop a mean post up game by tip off tonight. However, maybe, just maybe, he can play a little less soft. “However, ultimately the isssue isn’t the Hawks defense, the issue is the offense, will Crawford and Joe hit their jump shots? Will Horford get his mid-range going? Can we get some paint points from Josh and Za?
The way to combat the Orlando offensive wrinkle is to give them more to deal with defensively.”

This occurred to me too, and in theory you are right. The most reliable way to beat the Magic to me is to get Dwight in foul trouble and then incessantly attack the basket and win the game at the free throw line. The problem is, the Hawks are so undisciplined on offense that the only thing they can consistently do is shoot mid range jumpers. In Game 5, they got Dwight in foul trouble in the first quarter and could have probably made a run of their own when he went to the bench, but they elected to shoot jumpers instead and the Magic ended up being the team that went on a run in that situation. If they were capable of playing disciplined and efficient enough on offense to dictate terms to opposing defenses, they probably would have won a lot more than 44 games.

That is why he got more charges called in our favor than all other Hawks put together before the Hinrich trade (who is the close second).”

Here’s the problem though. It’s one thing to ask him to move his feet in the low post, and another thing entirely to do the same on the perimeter. To cover the same fraction of the court on the perimeter, he has to move his feet over a much greater distance. Yes, he is very fundamentally sound as a defender, but he does lack footspeed, which means his fundamentals are only going to allow him to defend effectively up to a certain distance away from the hoop. If the Magic are setting picks at the 3 point line, it takes him out of the zone where he can be effective.

The Illusion are not that good. They’ve proven this all year. The likelihood of JJ and Jamal shooting 4 – 20 FG, combined with a guy like JJ Redick shooting 6 – 8 for 15 points or more, is damn near slim to none.

I’ll be highly disappointed if the Hawks don’t close this team out tonight. This isn’t Boston or the Lakers we’re playing here. This is the F’in Illusion.

Put those fake azz sorcerers out of their misery, and let Dwight know that he’ll NEVER get back to the NBA Finals, while a member of the Illusion.

The problem with some who think Horford can just hit the midrange shot at will is that he can, when he is wide open. Orlando is not leaving him wide open, because he is being guarded by Bass or Anderson. When he plays center, most centers are not quick and agile enough to be out 15 to 20 feet from the goal checking a jump shooter. His FG% is down so much because Orlando is refusing to give him that open look. LD is so worried about Al defensively having to check Howard, that he does not realize that Horford poses just as big a mismatch on the offensive end for Howard. If Howard has to come out an defend Horford beyond the foul line, it takes him out of the lane, which in turn should open up the drivng lanes. Problem for us is nobody on our team will ever try to drvie the ball except Josh, and he won’t finish strong, or he goes to the line and misses free throws. Oh well!!!!!!

If Al is going to be taking midrange jumpers, then Josh and whoever is at Center need to be ready to rebound.

If the Hawks make enough of their jumpers, they will win. It’s that simple. If they dont make enough of their jumpers…it will be up to LD and the players to adjust. Unfortunately, this is the one thing they havent done a good job of all year. Adjusting.

Josh Smith has been and most likely will be a long term figure within the Hawks success, while Hinrich is just a stopgap that when you look back on things will have meant little good considering that was still a trade in which the Hawks organization lost out. So, I hope Josh losing no confidence over anything Hinrich does or says because he means little to nothing. I have a feeling that Al is going to have a big game tonight. He hasn’t had a dominant game all series long, and he usually doesn’t go for long stretches without having an inspiring performance. I think he’s due for one tonight. I just hope I’m right. One thing you can count on is that he’ll be fired up and full of energy. I just hope the guys who dominate the field goal attempts for the team (Joe and Jamal, sometimes Josh) are focused and playing smart tonight, because regardless of how much energy our guys come out with, it won’t necessarily win the game if we are playing low-IQ, selfish “hero-ball”.

More than anything, we need the Hawks to play smart tonight. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the energy will be there from the players. That should be a given.

At any rate, I have a quiet calmness about me today that makes me believe that the Hawks are going to close out this series tonight in impressive fashion.

I’m thinking that tonight is actually game seven for the Hawks. If they don’t win here, then game seven in Orlando will be another blowout. Great post.

The thing is, as much as people want Smoove with his horrible handles to drive the ball even though his right hand might as well be a prosthesis, Al with his excellent handles and very good finishing ability would really murder bigger opponents if he would face up and drive aggressively. Every now and then he does it and looks like a first team All NBA player in the process. More often than not, he does his little jab step routine and ends up with his back to the basket trying to hit a fadeaway or a hook shot, a situation where he is far less effective. As athletic as Dwight is, there is no way he would be able to keep up with Al if he had to respect the jumper and the drive.

Just as Smoove is too aggressive in looking to make things happen, I wish Al wasn’t so passive and ready to defer to his teammates.

It’s about more than just making jumpers though. I know it may seem that simple with this team, but we’ve won before when the jumpers are not falling, just not very often. As long as the defensive intensity and activity level are high enough, and the players for the Hawks are playing smart, we’ll have a shot at winning, even if we are shooting below 40%. This, of course, means that we will need to take care of the ball, hustle for loose balls, and attack the glass with a vengeance. I’m hoping that Al, Josh, and Zaza really own the boards tonight.

Najeh,

In regards to your 5:00 pm post, I agree. I’d also like to add in that I feel like L.D. is adding to the problem by not showing enough confidence in Al. It’s obvious that he wants Al to be matched up on Dwight as little as possible. It’s smart to want to keep Horford out of foul trouble (actual foul trouble, not this 2 foul-rule BS), but I think L.D. needs to also show more trust and confidence in Horford, sort of the way Woodson did. Even if it got us into trouble, Woodson would always put Al on the opposing team’s best big man and trusted that he would get the job done. I really feel like one of the biggest reasons why Horford isn’t more aggressive on the offense end is due to the fact that he doesn’t feel like the coach has confidence in him to do other things outside of shooting his mid-range jumper. I could be wrong, but based upon L.D.’s comments on Horford during the season, it seems like L.D. wants Horford to focus on the midrange shot as his main attack, and as a result, Horford has become too comfortable just settling for that. Also, based upon Al’s own comments on numerous occasions, I feel like he sells himself short and doesn’t have enough confidence in himself. It’s clear that he doesn’t regard himself as a “star” or a “go-to” guy (I’m not suggesting that he is), and is perfectly comfortable just deferring to others on the offensive end.

As much as I wish that a hard-nosed coach would discipline Josh and put him in his place so that he starts playing more under control and playing more toward his strengths, I wish that a coach would show confidence in Horford and motivate him to be “a focal point on offense”, even if he is not ready for that type of role, and even if his skill-set isn’t great enough for that yet, I feel like he needs to believe that he is that type of player for him to be more aggressive. He’s smart enough not to force shots or do things out of character, but I also feel like he is too passive in using abilities that he already has. The only thing he has confidence in seems to be his mid-range face-up game, when we all know he can do other things such as drive the ball. Also, I feel like Horford has more in the post than he is showcasing. Early on in the season, he was starting to impress me in the post during the time when JJ was out when he was starting to close out game that way for a short stretch. He showed some moves that I didn’t even think he had. I’m not saying he’s some sort of elite post player, but I feel like has more than just the simple middle-of-the-lane right-hand jump hook that he always seems to try and go to. I feel like he probably has other moves, but he just isn’t comfortable enough using them yet, or doesn’t feel like they are effective enough yet. Maybe he doesn’t, but I feel like the biggest thing that is holding Horford back is himself.
The mental issues are very similar to Josh in some ways, but with Josh, I think the case is not that he doesn’t believe in himself, but that sometimes he believes in himself a bit too much and tries to do things that he really can’t do yet. For both of them though, I think their biggest flaws are mental. Josh’s flaws tend to be pointed out much more often since he often gets into trouble by trying to do too much and hurting the team with noticeable overaggression (typically referred to as “stupidity” on this blog), while Al’s flaws are noticed less since he doesn’t try to do too much, but instead, plays it safe, and if you’re not watching closely, you don’t realize that his lack of confidence is actually hurting the team in subtle, yet significant ways.

At any rate, I think good coaching would solve a lot of these problems. One of the biggest reasons why I am not a big Larry Drew supporter is not necessary by just the way he coaches x’s and o’s during the games, but due to how he manages his players. I feel like he has guys playing to their weaknesses far too often and I don’t feel like he knows how to get the most out of these guys, nor does he try to. A lot of what he does sends the wrong messages to his players. Subtle mistakes, like assigning Horford to defend players who are total non-factors on the offensive end, and drawing up plays where Josh is spotting up beyond the 3 point arc, can have a much bigger impact on player psyche than a lot of people realize.

James,

I agree. If a guy shoots the midrange jumper over 50%, and continues to pass the ball to a guy who is not a good three point shooter, then he is as much the problem as the 3 point shooter is. Passiveness from Al and Marvin is just as big a problem on this team as overconfidence is with Josh.

JeJe,

Marvin is such a waste, I don’t even focus on him anymore. He really would not be an above average D-League player. Sad thing is, if we do advance, LD will start trotting him out there as a starter again, and Deng will destroy him.

O’Brien

We both agree that Josh is a better power forward than Horford, but for some reason Horford has convinced LD otherwise, and his numbers are down because of it. I still really don’t feel that Josh at PF would prevent him from shooting 3 pointers, but it would help our interior defense. I also know that Ryan Anderson, or Brandon Bass could not contain Josh in the post, like they have Horford.

From ESPN 5-on-5:

3. Fact or Fiction: The Magic will force a Game 7 with the Hawks.

LZ Granderson, ESPN The Magazine: Fact. Joe Johnson is a nice guy, but any squad depending on him to come up big in a closeout game is in trouble. What did he do last game, five points and three boards? Last year against the Bucks, dude scored eight in Game 7, and he shot 9-for-30 in the final two games against the Celtics in 2008.

Jordan Heimer, ClipperBlog: Fiction. The Magic shot the Hawks out of Amway Center in Game 5, aided by Larry Drew’s curious decision to sit Kirk Hinrich, his strongest defensive guard, for much of the decisive first half. Buoyed by a revved-up crowd and the triumphant homecoming of psuedo-headbutter Zaza Pachulia, the Hawks recapture their aggressive defense in Game 6, closing out on shooters and the series.

Ian Levy, The Two Man Game: Fact. Jamal Crawford’s jump shot has come back to Earth, just as outside shots have started falling for the Magic. It will take a significant amount of mental toughness to finish off the Magic, but mental toughness and the Hawks have been arch-enemies the past few seasons. In short, I like the Magic’s brand of chaos a lot more than the Hawks’.

Matt Moore, Hardwood Paroxysm: Fact. I’m sorry, but you’d like me to put faith in the Atlanta Hawks? Larry Drew’s Atlanta Hawks? The Hawks had their chance to slam the door shut, and instead they allowed the perimeter flood gates to open in Orlando. Faith no more in Atlanta.

Danny Savitzky, Nets Are Scorching: Fact. What looked to be a disturbing trend showed signs of changing for the better in Game 5, as the Magic finally started hitting some perimeter shots. Dwight Howard can’t do it alone, and even though the Hawks have an advantage in being able to single cover him, Orlando shooters’ success is a barometer for the Magic. Consistent with the law of averages, the Magic will push it to seven.

No respect, AT ALL. Can’t blame them.

Chess match, are you kidding me. You have to have some intelligence to play chess, and unfortunately neither the Hawk’s coach or it’s players have any intelligence when it comes to playing basketball or anything else. These guys are so lost on the court and it is funny when they look over at their coach and he looks like a deer in the headlights. The hawks are a bunch of overpaid, lazy, immature, thugs, and it will show again tonight. Watch these clowns throw up terrible shots, and make lazy passes all night, while they cry to the refs to try and help them out. This team is a disgrace to the city of Atlanta, and hopefully after they lose this series, the even worst ownership will have to sell the team. Rod, you are dead on. I also think LD plays checkers. I have said it all year we don’t need a center because we have one of the best. Although he hurts us checking Dwight, on offense he can pull Dwight away from the basket. So again, he really has to understand his substitution patterns. I am not that big on Hinrich, although he does a good job, JT needs PT to run these guys. He changes the pace of the game. JT has shot more FT’s in 8 minutes than KH has for the entire playoffs 0-0.

The worst part of it, when we beat Orlando, Marvin will again be a starter despite being a non-factor. 10 of his 12 points came in garbage time on Tuesday.

I’ve seen Collins defend the pick ‘n roll well in many occasions on pure positioning and savvy.

I’ll take that over half hearted efforts by other guys. Where you would be 100% right is that he could be in foul trouble on account of that and diminish his availability when we needed him.

You are dead right on the Al Horford subject: his percentages are good because he only takes good shots (clean looks).

When called to shoot under pressure, his numbers drop dramatically (he basically craps his pants under pressure).

Funny enough, I would venture into saying that against ORL, Al should play SF when Collins is on the floor and ask Josh play PF.

Similarly, when we were about to play MIA a couple of months ago I thought that against MIA Josh should have played C so he could be always under the rim on D to stop and intimidate Wade and Lebron’s drives leaving Al to play Bosh away from the basket.

JJ can’t buy a shot, even the bunnies. He’s pressing a little too hard. But I’d rather for him to press like this, than to play the passive game. Pressing big time.

8 shots is a little excessive, especiall when you don’t have it going. But it’s better than taking 2 shots, and seeing your team go down the toilet.

Despite their shooting, the bright spot for both JJ and Josh, is that they’re extremely active on the defensive end, and are playing hard. At least the effort is there tonight, even if the shots aren’t falling for either of them.

Now . . what Drew needs to do is rest him NOW . . and let Hinrich run the team with Jamal playing off the ball. If they trap Hinrich, let’s see what Jamal can do with the ball once the Illusion is in scramble mode.

Josh was driving me crazy late in that second half. He needs to calm down. He took bad shots, stopped attacking the rim, starting making some crazy passes, and committing dumb fouls. First off, he doesn’t need to have 12 shots in one half when he doesn’t have it going. He needs to focus on other things when his offense has escaped him. I really hope the Hawks play smarter in that second half. It should help to have Kirk back in the game. He helps calm the guys down.

By the way, the defense by the Hawks has been pretty good.

“That’s the problem with Crawford playing the point. He is in no way a point guard. He’s a scorer, as is JJ. With him at the 1, there’s no one on the floor to get the Hawks into their offense.”

This is another reason why it will be great to get Kirk back into the game in the third quarter. I feel a lot better when he is on the floor since I know he will attempt to prevent the Hawks from playing low-IQ basketball. I’m still annoyed at the fact that we are only up by 6, but there’s no use crying over spilled milk. The Hawks just need to come out in the second half and handle their business. If they can hold serve, they are only 24 minutes away from a 1st round series victory.

When I refer to JJ simply getting up his shots, this is the type of game I’m talking about.

Too many times, that 2 – 10 FG start in the 1st half, would’ve ended up 4 – 15, because he would’ve stopped shooting. Or better yet, he would’ve never gotten to 12 shots in the 1st half to begin with.

Sometimes as a shooter, you just have to keep grinding, and try to take better shots. So he goes on to shoot 8 – 13 in the 2nd half and is steady enough at the end to help us win the game.

The box score will say that he was inefficient, seeing that he needed 25 shots to score 23 points. Good thing he came alive in the 2nd half, when we needed him the most.

Way to grind to night on both ends of the court JJ.

But the game ball goes to the bench. Jamal did his thing and made enough shots in the 2nd half to hold the Illusion off.

But Marvin Williams (( clapping )) . . way to show up tonight man. I was praying to God that you’d hit that 3 at the end, because it would’ve been fitting for you to be the one to put the Illusion out of their misery.

And Zaza . . thanks for being Zaza. I truly believe the flagrant foul he drew on Turk, was the turning point in the game. The Illusion was poised to take the lead, then they lost focus.

Great grind it out game tonight.

And JJ and Jamal got close enough to the magic number tonight. 42 combined points for those two tonight.

Good win. Still can work on a lot of things. But at least we can get a little rest before we travel to Chicago next week.

Now guys . . go to Magic City or wherever, and celebrate. You can go tonight. You have my permission to get your party on for at least one night.

Joe was the only guy going to the rack and getting in the lane tonight. Good win and okay series by the Birdbrains. The Falcons are stupid they need a CB more than WR they should have taken Prince from Nebraska. The Hawks will lose to the Bulls because of Drew. He will go back to the old lineup which is the problem. Marvin is inconsistent, Josh is a wildcard, and Al does not do a good enough job of offering resistance at the rim or playing position defense to be a C in the NBA, add that to Kirk or Bibby not being the type of PG really needed you have a disaster in the making any night

What are you talking about? Do you think I am an Orlando fan? I never picked the Hawks to lose to the Magic. I never made a prediction because I don’t know which Hawks team will show up.

I have been very vocal about the need to fire Larry Drew. I still hope he will be fired even if the Hawks make it into the ECF. The only thing that Drew brings to the Hawks is his own flawed personality. Who knows, maybe it takes a personality that is as messed up as Drew’s to be able to understand and motivate the messed up personality of this team.

I know this, if Teague has to get major minutes because of Kirk’s injury and Teague looks unprepared, I will be screaming for Drew’s head on a platter.

I have to say pretty much all the Hawks showed up.

Al looked more confident, more aggressive.
Joe was in attack mode all night long.
Josh tried to go inside more than usual and was attacking.
Marvin came through with a few clutch shots.
Jamal lit it up.
Kirk played solid.
Zaza was Zaza (the Rocky version!)
Jason Collins played his role well.
REALLY SOLID TEAM DEFENSE,

The only part that really scared me was in the 4th quarter Orlando was really attacking Jamal, and for the more part, their attacks were successful. But the Hawks were able to hold them off for a huge win!

Man, I am so freaking relieved that I was wrong.

Fortunately the Magic sucked big time and went completely off track from the plan that gave them the win in game 5.

I think Bianchi’s column had a double effect, motivating the Hawks and relaxing the Magic.

It seemed like ORL were simply waiting for us to lose the game (we nearly did it).

In the end, it was them that did a wonderful Hawks’ impersonation: loads of bad shots after little to no ball and player movement, followed by no one crashing the boards to get the misses (praises to our bigs too), and also horrible defensive rebounding (particularly in the first half and then in the last possession – clutch rebound tapped by JJ).

Jamal was his usual self, an igniter for both sides, missing badly his defensive assignment on Redick several times, including the next to last possession, but overall in these series I have to hand it to him, he was great.

JJ had ups and downs but even on the games in which his offense was not particularly impressive he was a work horse on D and people rarely realize that.

We definitely take some notes from Pacers coach Frank Vogel, put a bigger Marvin Williams on Derrick Rose, Teague on Bogans, and Joe on Luol. Whenever they come to set him a screen trap HARD to get the ball out of his hands, and recover at the rim.

We can be a little more lenient on the three pointers this series, the Bulls aren’t really designed like that, they cut hard and get to the rim. We will need much more perimeter defense now. Boozer looked pretty bad in the Pacers series, no where near what I expected tough defense from their bigs bothered him.

Force Rose to shoot rather than drive at will, and I think we have a good chance.

Buddy Grizzard

April 28th, 2011
11:14 pm

add that to Kirk or Bibby not being the type of PG really needed you have a disaster in the making any night – superior

Superior, you couldn’t let one chance go to kick Captain Kirk while he’s down? Time to see if Teague is ready because not even Las Vegas Larry has the stomach to run JC1 out for 40 minutes head to head with Rose if Kirk is out for significant time.

You think Kirk would get dusted by Rose, but I think Kirk’s desire to beat the point guard who supplanted him in CHI and ASA’s desire to win head to head with Noah actually would give the Hawks and edge. Now with the injury to KH, we can only hope Teague gets his shot and plays like he did against Portland.

But hey superior, go ahead and give Captain Kirk his props, aight? He had a good series for the white people ;)

“If this team do overachieve against Chicago, you’ll have to ask yourself if they did it BECAUSE of LD or INSPITE of LD.” – Lukas

I picked Hawks in 7 for this series… don’t know why I ever thought Hawks would win a game 7 on the road. So, Hawks over Bulls in 6… same scenario we finish it off at Phillips. And hey, I copyrighted the phrase “win in spite of LD.” I expect royalties from your post.

But for real though, I said they would beat ORL in spite of Las Vegas Larry and they did. Now Vegas has a series under his belt, he’s undefeated as a coach in postseason series’, and he’s got a great chance to show us all what he has learned. The Bulls and Celtics have the top two defenses in the NBA. Thibs is responsible for BOTH of those defensive implementations.

So now Las Vegas Larry gets to set up the checker board with the best coach, not in the NBA, but in the sport of basketball.

I really thought Marvin’s 3 pt shot late in the game was going in. It looked perfect, right on target. Still can’t believe that did not fall for him. I am betting he thought for sure he made that shot. Would have put the game away and saved all the tension at the end.

LOL Grandad.

Lukas, speaking of no kidding around, I said it before this series started that ATL would beat ORL on superior talent and in spite of LD’s horrible coaching. I think in games 2 and 5 his inexperience showed through and this could have been a much shorter series.

HAVING SAID THAT, and even though I don’t care much for LD’s personality or the way he carries himself, I still think Las Vegas Larry isn’t too old to learn new tricks. He’s got a chance to learn from his mistakes. Especially game 5 when DH went to the bench… I think LVL thought the Magic were just going to lay down and die without their star. I think he was completely unprepared for the sudden change in style of play.

Maybe he will be better prepared in round 2. He better be, cause this is the top seed and the top D, with the MVP at our weakest position.

Joe on Lou is a good idea..Marvin too slow and awkward to keep up…Hawks must control the glass to compete.Stay big……Game one is a must win to advance……Get’er done. Al in the middle will not.lost 2 games by combine total of 51 points,Unacceptable!!…

Jamal’s defense on the perimeter is down right frightful…..But at least he makes up for it on the offensive end..He never got the memo, play some defense you’d be a starter…..Oh well, just keep scoring…

Yeah, Hawks. They had never won a 7 games series in less than 7 games before tongiht. Cannot really say they dominated but they did just enough to make a case for them being one of the top 4 teams in the Eastern Conference. It will be interesting to see what adjustments they make against Chicago.

How bad is the injury to Hinrich?
And if he is out, what is the chance LD places enough trust in Teague to give him serious minutes in the Chicago series?

These Hawks – collectively – are pretty good. But we need to see some of them become great. Their potential keeps me hanging on. Winning tonight almost makes up for last years embarrassment. But not quite. Not yet. We need to see if they are for real. Grab the Bulls by the horns. Free the Teague!

Grandad,

In your experience can Kirk play effectively next week with a strained hamstring?

@Slimjr…agree with you about Collins. man, look who has been coachin’ these cats since they came into the league…Woodson and LD!!! Josh…str8 outta HS and that’s who he’s learned from. same with Marvin with just 1 yr of college ball. i really wonder where these 2 cats in particular would be had they had a Collins, Sloan, or Adelman etc etc etc to coach ‘em…

Big Al, what options does Vegas have? JC1 at point 40 minutes per game? Pape Sy??

Teague will get some run. If he embarrasses himself, we all know Vegas didn’t even try to develop him or instill confidence during the regular season. But this is basketball. Either you can play or you can’t. I think we’re going to find out alot about our favorite forgotten Hawk this series.
