Atlanta Hawks at Magic Game 5: ‘Growth’ business

Orlando–”Growth” has been the buzzword for the Hawks over the last two days.

Marvin: “We have an opportunity to show some growth. We’ve had a chance to close series [early] in the past and we haven’t done that.”

Al: “This is the first time we’ve been in this kind of position where we are up 3-1. We are a different team but they are coming out and giving us all they have. We have to make sure we come out ready and expect it and it will show some growth if we are able to come out on top.”

L.D.: “With this team I am always talking about this team growing. To me them positioning themselves to go into Orlando and finish this thing off, that’s a huge step in our growth process.”

I know what you are thinking. The Hawks have bigger goals than winning a first-round playoff series. That’s true but I’m also inclined to agree that a W tonight would mean be significant in a few ways.

Already the Hawks are the second team in franchise history to lead a seven-game series 3-1 (the ‘69-70 squad beat the Bulls in five). Win tonight and they would be the fifth time in 15 tries that an Atlanta Hawks team closed out a playoff series on the road (the ‘95-’96 squad was the last to do it, winning at Indiana). It also would be just the third time in 24 series the Atlanta Hawks won as the lower seed and the first time in a best-of-seven.

And let’s not forget that the Magic bludgeoned the Hawks last spring, prompting everyone to question their heart. Beating the Magic in five, even a different Magic team, would have to count for something.

That’s historical perspective. From a practical standpoint, the Hawks need the rest. Going seven games with Miami and Milwaukee the past two seasons didn’t help. That was especially true last season, when expectations for the Hawks were high and the Milwaukee series felt like a letdown.

“We were more worn out mentally than physically,” L.D. said. “We were already battered mentally and then we had had to gear up for what was going to be a physical pounding we knew that was going to happen during that series. It took a toll on us.”

So here’s a chance for the Hawks to put away the Magic and get a break between series. It won’t be easy.

“Coming back to this building, the energy is going to be high,” L.D. said. “The Magic have a lot of pride. They play hard. We have to expect we are not going to get a lot of calls. There’s a certain mentality you definitely have to have to close out a team. You play to be the desperate team as well. You don’t play like you have a 3-1 lead; you play like you’re behind 3-1. You play like this is the last game for you.”

More on those missed 3s

It seems one popular narrative in the series is that the Magic are missing bushels of wide open 3s. So I fired up the Synergy Sports Technology machine again to see if the video evidence supports that story.

In Game 3, the Magic got nine clean looks on 3-pointers (not counting heaves at the buzzer) and made four. One of those clean looks was a Redick miss when the Hawks pretty much let him shoot because Orlando was down four with time about to expire.

In Game 4, the Magic got eight clean looks on 3-pointers (not counting heaves at the buzzer) and made two. One of those clean looks was an Arenas miss after Jamal tripped and fell to the court (Jamal, by the way, aggressively defend 3s in that game after hardly working at it in the first three).

The Magic have attempted a total of 90 3-pointers in the series when subtracting the six heaves at the buzzer. By my count they’ve had 39 “clean” looks (43 percent of their legit attempts) and made 13, or 33 percent. I don’t know how many clean looks the Magic normally get or how many they usually make but it’s a pretty safe guess that they are accustomed to more open looks and making more of them.

There’s more to this story when you look at the video. The definition of a “clean” look is subjective but I can tell you mine was pretty liberal because these are NBA players in general and proven 3-point shooters in particular. I counted some looks as “clean” when Hawks defenders were quickly closing to challenge but didn’t appear to get a hand in the shooter’s face or into the expected path of the shot.

Those plays have happened a lot in this series. It’s been rare that a Magic shooter is standing alone outside of the 3-point line without the shot either being directly challenged or with the imminent threat of a closing defender. The Hawks have been very aggressive on their close-outs against Magic players other than Jameer (whom they don’t have to challenge as hard because he’s shorter) because none of them are a real threat to score off the dribble.

If Orlando’s 3-point shooters don’t look comfortable, could that be less about choking and more about being thrown off balance by swarms of long, athletic Hawks defenders buzzing around them? You can see on video that even when the Magic do get clean looks from 3 they tend to rush their shots. Could at least part of the reason for that be because they get only half a beat before a Hawks player is running at them to close off the space?

Maybe that’s why today Stan Van Gundy said: “We have to shoot the ball better, which I think in some ways means we have to have better patience and execution to create better shots.”

Again, I don’t know how many clean looks the Magic usually get in a game. I do know that a principle of their offense is to get those looks by way of Dwight post-ups leading to spot-up 3s. And I can tell you that after four games in this series the Magic still have gotten exactly one open 3-pointer in that manner. One.

That’s stymied the Magic’s effectiveness with spot-up Js, which was of one of their most effective play types in the regular season. Like Ryan Anderson said the other day, the Hawks are forcing the Magic to get their 3-point looks in different ways. It’s not going well for Orlando.

After looking at replays of all of Orlando’s 3-point attempts in this series, my take is that the “Magic are missing open shots” theory holds less water than the “aggressive Hawks defenders are disrupting Orlando’s shooters” theory.

Notes

  • Zaza on the expected reception from Magic fans: “I remember rookie year I was fan favorite. Now I am most hated.”
  • L.D. on fan animosity for Zaza: “It’s not anything he’s not used to. I’m sure in his career it’s happened before. Zaza is a pro.”
  • L.D. expects the Magic to use Arenas in more pick-and-rolls. Van Gundy expects the Hawks to adjust how they defend Arenas in those plays.
  • There have been 194 teams to face a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven series. Only eight of them recovered to win.
  • According to Synergy, Jamal leads the playoffs in field-goal attempts per game off the dribble (7.8). Said Van Gundy: “That is a tough thing. It’s not an easy thing to handle. We will make adjustments but when he’s ‘dribble, dribble, dribble’ and then pulls up that’s not easy to deal with without fouling.”
  • Van Gundy on Dwight’s minutes: “I don’t want to give away a big secret but he’s not going to get a lot of rest.”

Come on, Hawks, close this series out tonight. The Hawks need to come out with tons of energy and aggressiveness in this game. The Magic are going to be fighting for their playoff lives, so the Hawks need to be prepared to not just match their intensity, but to surpass their intensity. The Hawks need to show that they are truly growing as a team and they are ready to take that next step. I hope that the Hawks come out with fire and desire tonight (like Rick James) and earn a huge closeout victory on the road. Let’s go Hawks! I know you can do it!

@JeJe – It would help if the following trio shoot better than they did in Sunday’s victory.
Al (6 – 15), Joe (6 – 15 ) and Josh (4 -10)……..40% might not work on the road.

I especially liked what Drew said about expecting to not get alot of calls. If some of his players can get that through their heads, aka JSmooth, we might actually have a shot at closing this thing out. I believe things go way better for my Hawks when they are able to just move on to the next episode after a foul call. Go Hawks!!!

If the Hawks come out tonight and handle their business the way they are supposed to by closing out this series, we may just have something brewing here.

However, if they come out and get blown out by the Magic, that will let me know that these are the same ol’ Hawks.

I will be watching.

The hawks need this game tonight. They do not need the pressure of this series being prolonged;also, Michael’s right the length of those other series hurt the hawks in the second round, with fatigue and injuries. Jamals been great, but please pass the ball a little more. Josh Smith is the key to this game in my opinion, he needs to bring his energy to match what the magic are going to bring.

LD: “Coming back to this building, the energy is going to be high,” L.D. said. “The Magic have a lot of pride. They play hard. We have to expect we are not going to get a lot of calls”

I’m thinking Orlando’s real six-man will not let them lose tonight

The Referees, that is

Somewhat agree with Chuck on this one, the Hawks have not shown that “killer instinct” in the past (over coming adversity with opponents on the ropes, ripping their hearts out), I would be quite surprise if they showed it tonight. But a win, by 1 or 20, any means necessary is still a win.

IF MET BY HAWKS…THEN HISTORY WILL FAVOR HAWKS TO WIN SEMI-FINAL MATCHUP WITH BULLS OR PACERS…

LD IS RIGHT, THE MAGIC WILL PLAY DESPERATELY….MEANING ANYTHING CAN BE EXPECTED FROM MAGIC’S PLAYERS…IT GOING TO GET PHYSICAL AND DIRTY….

IN ORDER FOR THE HAWKS TO MATCH MAGIC’S HIGH-LEVEL INTENSITY IN GAME FIVE, THE HAWKS MUST PLAY AS THE DESPERADOS…..LEAVE NOTHING AFTER THE GAME…..LEAVE IT ALL IN GAME FOR FORTY EIGHT MINUTES!!!!!

NO RESPECT….

It could possibly be the 6’4 PG, 6’8 SG, 6’9 SF, 6’10 PF, or the 7ft center and their incredible wingspans that is causing them to miss. Maybe their LEGS are tired from gaurding players who are 20lbs heavier and more athletic.

If they(Magic) were playing the Celtics or Bulls they would get the credit, but the Hawks are just lucky after 8 games….

I hope the Hawks can close it out tonight on the Magic’s logo in their brand new arena. They really need to treat this as a must-win game. Game 5 will tell a lot about Hawks ‘growth’ or not. Close out the series, then they’ve really matured. Lose by not playing intensive defence, then they are not just there yet. Liking what I’m seeing in this 1st round series so far, though.

“I don’t give a rat’s tail about the offense – really.”

Well, I sure hope that the Hawks care about the offense because good offense is a big step toward good defense. Quick, ill-advised, low-percentage shots lead to easy transition buckets and defensive breakdowns on the other end. I get what you are saying, and I, too, hope that the Hawks play with all-out intensity on defense, but they better be sure that they also play smart on the offensive end, because that will be just as important. The Hawks need to step it up on both ends of the floor, not just one.

Why the hell are we running post-ups for Zaza? L.D., are you kidding me? Stop with the stupidity. Even if Ryan Anderson is guarding him, that doesn’t make Zaza a good post-up player. Zaza is a garbage player (in the rebound and put-back sense), don’t try to make something out of nothing L.D. Please, L.D., don’t make us lose this game due to poor coaching.

We are already in a hole, but if we just slowly chisel away at the lead, it will disappear with smart basketball. I really hope that Kirk and Al stay on the court as much as possible during this comeback because they are the only players that we can really trust to make smart decisions. Joe has been awful so far, Josh is playing with a lot of energy, but not smart energy, and Jamal is not hustling on defense.

Get it together, Hawks! You’ve worked to hard to throw it all away. If you want the world to respect you or believe that you are “growing” as a team, then prove it. Now’s your chance.

OK . . question. I’m at work and can’t watch most of this game. LOL . . what happened in the 1st quarter?

I see the box score, but I’m wondering how they played JJ? Did he just not have enough looks to shoot the ball, so he passed to other people? Or did the other people take it upon themselves to shoot more?

At any rate, it looks like the Magic has started to make shots, while we’re in an offensive funk. Oh well.

What I would like to see though, is for us to show some perseverence right here, and slowly wittle this lead back down. Just don’t get blown out by 30 or 40. That might be a huge momentum changer for this series.

they really had no business of trying to compete within this game once they let go of the rope.

I hate it when Josh leads the team in field goal attempts. It seems like every time that happens, we lose. The guys who are annoying me more than anyone are our guards, outside of Hinrich,

Look at that pathetic defense by Joe on the Richardson drive. What is up with Joe? Does he have some sort of foot/leg injury that he’s not telling us about? Or, does he just not care? Right now, I think it’s the latter.

This is just embarrassing. The Hawks deserve no credit for what they’ve done in the first three games, after the way they’ve come out in this game. The only guys on this team who I have any respect for are Al and Zaza. The rest of the guys are a bunch of soft panzies. I guess I shouldn’t dislike Kirk, or Teague, they’re not really part of the problem, but I could care less for any of the other players outside of those whom I just mentioned.

Jamal is only good when he’s on fire on the offensive end, and Joe is only good when he’s scoring through his selfish play-style (he doesn’t even attempt to play team basketball most of the time).

I’m just completely disappointed in this team right now. The only way to redeem themselves is through a huge comeback in the second half.

I tip my hat to Al for him at least trying and hustling in this game, but the rest of the players can kiss my a$$ right now.

Why does dumba$$ Smith have 12 field goal attempts already in this game? Someone needs to hurt this guy’s feelings just to make him realize that he isn’t as good as he thinks he is. Maybe that will get him to stop playing so stupid all of the time. There’s a reason why people rant about wanting to trade guys like Josh. It’s not because he isn’t a talented or capable player, but rather because he just doesn’t get it. No matter how much experience he has, he plays like an inexperienced rookie, and when things aren’t going his way, he’s too weak mentally to tune in and stay focused. As the Cavs announcers put it during our last game against them in the regular season, Josh “wilts under the pressure”.

This is exactly why we need to get strong-minded players on this roster and weed out the weak. We need more guys like Kirk, Al, and Zaza, who put the team first, and only care about winning. Those guys are strong-minded and smart (Kirk and Al moreso than Zaza).

When the Hawks starting looking like they might win this series, I thought it might save Drew’s job, but the way it is looking right now, he’s likely going to be gone after this season, and for the most part, he deserves it. He hasn’t done much to help the team in this game. No Teague, no damien, he continues to let Josh launch jumpers and keep him in the game, and he refuses to urge the team to attack their mismatches. I’m disappointed with everyone, including the coach.

Even if he is being aggressive out there, Brick Smith should not have 18 shots in the third quarter. That’s just too many for a guy of his offensive skill level. Al had a wide open lane where he could have cut and Kirk could have found him for the easy dunk, but he hung out at the top of the key instead waiting for the pass.

Now, Al knocks down that shot with regularity, so it’s not a big deal that he hangs out up there. But as far as the Smoove criticism is concerned, if the problem is just in the idea of a big man hanging out on the perimeter, Smoove is by no means the only big man on this team who is guilty as charged.

If I didn’t know better, I would think this was the second round of the 2010 NBA playoffs. Games like this hurt so bad that it makes it difficult to even watch other NBA games if you’re a diehard Hawks fans. For me, as soon as I start watching or playing basketball after a game like this, I’m reminded of how embarrassing the Hawks played. I don’t see how the team can expect fan support when they make it look like they don’t even belong on the court. You can’t tell me that the Magic are so good that they would blow the Hawks out by thirty when the Hawks were playing smart or giving maximum effort. That’s just silly. A true contender would wipe the floor with the Magic. Boston would sweep them without breaking a sweat. I wish the Hawks had even half as much heart and mental toughness as Boston.

It would have been nice to see him in the game against actual starters for the Magic to see what he could do, but at this point, it means nothing. What a huge disappointment here. This may have changed the entire series. Most of the Hawks players are probably too weak, mentally, to even recover from this for game 6.

By the way, as bad as the Hawks played tonight, a big part of the problem was also the fact that the players payed too much attention to Dwight. Our mediocre coach should realize that that is never a good move. It never works to double Dwight. Even the thought of doing that is silly. I hope Drew realizes that, and I hope he rips his players after this loss. He’s probably too much of a panzy to even do that though. He’ll probably be blowing Josh and talking about how great Joe is in his post-game interview and just blame the loss on a lack of “sense of urgency” and shots not falling. Drew is the perfect representation of what this team is all about. A coward who talks a big game, but never goes out and does what he is talking about. A lot of talk and nothing to back it up…

well i saved my eyes and stopped watching the game after that 10 point deficit in the first quarter, just knew it wasn’t that kind of night and we will be blown out, at least now everyone will turn against the hawks and they will have their backs to the wall just like other years, let’s see if they respond, at this point it could go either way and it doesn’t matter which team wins this round, since if we win our team will likely stay the same and if the magic win than otis will probably keep his job so 2 stagnant teams fighting each other, while the bulls might win tonight and look ahead to their 2nd round opponent

I cant stand regular season style basketball in the playoffs, that’s why we get no respect from anyone in the league. LD, its all on you. I asked this precise qn at the start-why didn’t LD play highlights this morning-with sound, of last years’ blowouts?

again, tonight represents everything wrong with this team.

too many possessions off.
too many quarters off.
too many nights off.

not really a hungry bunch. no killer instinct. nothing about their performance tonight makes one think their really driven to win.

again, i point to OKC last night. did they lose? sure. but a team that’s up 3-0 playing at denver actually showed up and tried to pull one out, they just came up short. the hawks didn’t even bother showing up.

the hawks literally have insisted on putting their season on one game. if this think goes 7…

Yeah run some plays for a guy who was drafted #2 and almost #1..I have never ever seen anything like this since i started watching basketball..you draft a guy #2 and make him a stand in a corner and watch 3 guys take all the shots..but i guess running plays for the hometown hero J Smooth is cool right?…Until the Hawks get a real coach, we are going no where…next year when Marvin is scoring 20 ppg for someone i will say very loudly, i told you so..Just like with Jordan Crawford..The Hawks have to many ball hogs!..
@slim Jr
you and i both know Woody was not going to play Paul if we drafted him #2.Get over it..Paul has never won a damn thing anyway..If Marvin got as many plays ran for him as Josh Smith, he would average 20ppg..i never seen a former #2 have to defer to average at best players..

The Sheldon Williams pick is the pick that will forever hurt us…Hell, we have a good point guard roasting on the bench right now!..Point guard is not the position that is hurting us.. The lakers have won titles with Fisher at the point, and the help of the refs, but that’s another story….It looks like bibby will get a ring running the point with the Heat…But we passed on Rondo in 06, who i like just as much as Paul,..and we passed on Roy, who even with a battered leg is 20x better than Joe Max!..Regardless Marvin has been solid, no small forward is going to score over 12ppg with the 3 J posse out there throwing up more garbage than the basket can take…

I’m new to this so please bear with me. As I see it, my support for the ATL Hawks is analogous to a wise, intelligent man in love with a silly, sexy, promiscuous woman (ie., slut, tramp, skank, et cetera). The wise man deep down in his heart knows that the loose woman is no good for him. He knows a relationship with this type of woman is idiotic and a complete waste of time. He knows a tenous relationship with her at best will only end in heartache and potential financial ruin. The ATL Hawks are like the silly, loose woman with whom you fall in love. The Hawks have flashes of brilliance such as J-Craw hitting swagger daggers, game winners and buzzer beaters, Al “Boss” Horford hitting that set shot off the pick and pop, J-Smoove blocking shots, making steals, and dunking lob passes, and Joe Cool heating up and going off on the mid-range game. Even though the Hawks can be exciting to watch, this team is woefully inconsistent and seems to mail it in when the proverbial “chips are down.” This team has some nice pieces but are in need of a coach who is a great communicator, motivator, and tactician. This teams also needs a quality big man (center). This is my two cents.

How many times did “the stinger” say Drew should be emptying his bench pretty soon since this game is pretty much over? Drew played the starters inton the fourth quarter. He sat Jamal early since he was off, but why run your starters into the ground. I think Hinrich, Joe, Al, and Josh just might be tired after playing so many minutes. Why does this fool continue to do stuff like this. I really don’t think the Hawks need to trade anyone until they get a capable coach. Drew is not a capable coach.
