Atlanta Hawks: They sure do take bad shots sometimes

From what I’m hearing, the TNT talkers spent a lot of time last night ragging on the Hawks for their poor shot selection. This just in. . . .

I can imagine the collective shrugs of my blog people who know this team and have become accustomed to (if not totally accepting of) its weaknesses. I also figure you are annoyed by the national nit-picking of those warts by people just now paying attention to the Hawks and who hadn’t bothered to take a moment to look at numbers which clearly show they love jump shots (and are pretty good at making them).

I assure you it’s nothing personal. The same thing happened at this time last year. People who hadn’t watched the Hawks all year and/or analyze their tendencies were appalled to discover that Joe spent a lot of time dribbling on one side of the floor as his teammates watched or that Josh gets frustrated by calls and loses focus.

I remember my response to puzzled Orlando media types querying me about those topics: “Um, yeah. That’s the Hawks.” And whenever I would make an observation about the team they cover regularly, they would say: “Um, yeah. That’s the Magic.”

So here we are again. The Hawks are getting roasted for being the Hawks. We’ve seen it the last three games: The Hawks built a sizable lead by generally taking good shots and making them, then lost it by generally taking bad shots and missing them (or missing more of the good ones).

It’s not as if the Hawks don’t understand what’s going on.

“We have to be smarter with our shot selection, especially when we are up,” Al said. “I think guys want to put it away with one play, one big three or something. But it doesn’t work that way. If you are not hitting you have to do something different. Attack more, change it up.”

How long have we been hearing that from these guys? It’s April 25 and so it’s doubtful they are going to change their habits now. And, really, oftentimes the Hawks are only encouraged to keep jacking Js by their early success.

Consider Game 4. According to Synergy Sports Technology, the Hawks had five isolation plays in the first quarter and scored a robust eight points, all on jump shots. In the second quarter they scored three points on two isos. In the third they scored three points on five isos. And in the final period, they scored seven points on eight isos.

In all, the Hawks scored 22 points on on 20 isolation plays in Game 4, with all but four of those points by way of jumper. I’m guessing the TNT talkers weren’t ripping the Hawks for shooting too many Js when they had it rolling early.

The problem isn’t that the Hawks can’t score that way but, as Al points out, they still don’t seem to be able to grasp that when that way is not working and then find another way (though J.J. getting to the basket and to the free-throw line in the fourth quarter was a positive step).

“The last couple games then third-quarter shot selection has been a problem,” L.D. said. “Not being patient enough in moving the basketball. When we do move the ball and have been patient we’ve gotten good things out of it. When we start pounding the ball and we start playing a little one-on-one it gets a little stagnant.

“We watch film every day and point these things out. You hope that, particularly in the playoffs, these guys can see where they do get stagnant and they can say, ‘OK, here is what we need to do here, here is what we need to do there,’ because we have shown in this series when we do move the basketball we become tougher to defend. But when we start standing around and pounding the ball and start settling for 3-point shots, we become easy to defend.”

L.D. knows it, the players know it, you know it, I know it . . . hell, anyone who pays attention to the Hawks knows it. And now the national talkers know it, too, since they are watching the Hawks.

Tremaine- what does playoff basketball look like ? Every team in the playoffs is playing “playoff basketball” just because they dont like it doesnt mean they get to decide how every team must play.

In the first weekend when so many individual players were putting up outrageous numbers aided by an insane amount of ft trips they didnt say anything . Do they honestly believe Derrick Rose being 0-9 from three but scoring 39 points because he was sent to the ft line 21 times is playoffs basketball ?

All that matters is getting the win anyone who tries to say differently has some hidden agenda.

The hawks need to execute better at certain stretches of the game but the Hawks are also winning those games . There is no reason they should be ripping us the way they did .

o’b yes to that as they shoved it down our throats. shoot maybe even the hornets. again when we have been led by lead footed point guards and yes hinrich though i like him is included this team plays slow like having a grandmother of 80 driving a porsche. we would be more athletic if we had say ummmm chris paul over the last several years.

it really doesnt matter how athletic we are until we can get a point guard that can distribute it to take advantage of it so josh and al dont have to bring it up; which it sdoes appear has slowed to an extent now that he bibby era is behind us. still laughing at the guy who said he misses all those alley oops bibby threw up there. heh heh

You cant run without any boards and the willing to throw the ball ahead .

Did anyone see that Darrell Arthur play last night where he blocked the shot and you could see him running hard as he could to the other end to get that alley-oop ?

If we had Chris Paul we would still have problems because we dont rebound consistently ,get the ball to the middle of the floor and then run hard on the wings

I really believe if the Hawks had drafted Chris Paul or deron Williams instead of Marvin,
neither Woody or Drew would have given them the minutes to be successful.
It would have been another replay of Teague and the Texas A&M player. No p.t.

Thanks for the stats. The Kirkhammer has been impressive. I actually sorta liked Bibby, but this is the playoffs and defense matters. It only helps that he’s shooting about 50% from the floor and 3, giving us points and assists to go with holding Jameer down pretty well. Looks like a good trade now.

Apparently some Celtics fan feels the same way about Glen Davis taking fewer jumpers as some here in Hawkvilles feels about Josh. It is worth noting in this article states that:

The league average for mid-range shots (16-23 feet) is 39.4% for the 2010-11 season, the Hawks shots above average at 43.3%. However, surprisingly, the Hawks FG % in the playoff breakdown this way:

Josh Smith (Ranks 20/61) @ 49%
K Hinrich (Ranks 26/61) @ 47.5%
Jamal Crawford (Ranks 27/61) @ 47.1%
Joe Johnson (Ranks 37/61) @ 43.5%
Al Horford (Ranks 38/61) @ 42.6%

These stats suggest Josh Smith is leading in FG% (in the playoff) compared to his teammates, go figure.

Here is the playoff TO breakdown:

Joe Johnson (Ranks 10/138) @ 3.2 TOPG
Josh Smith (Ranks 19/138) @ 2.5 TOPG
Jamal Crawford (Ranks 62/138) @ 1.2 TOPG
Al Horford (Ranks 1.2/138) @ TOPG
K Hinrich (Ranks 1.0/138) @ TOPG

So while we all squirm when Josh gets the ball out on the perimeter, these stats numbers suggest JJ is really the player worth squirming about. Again go figure

**********************************

Question. Why list the shooting from midrange ( 16 – 23 feet ), then list the overall shooting % of the players? Here are the facts.

Josh Smith would probably be shooting closer to 60% in the playoffs, had he not shot half of the jumpers he has in this series. He’s been unusually good in the paint this series 83% FG at the rim and a really good 67% FG in the paint.

But on those midrange shots . . shots that he hit during the regular season . . he’s shooting 18% FG

18%

He’s shooting 18% from midrange . . and 18% from three . . 4 – 22 FG total on his jumpshots outside the lane.

When it comes to who is shooting the best on jumpers outside the paint, here are the numbers

Hinrich: 50%
Crawford: 40%
Horford: 37%
Johnson: 32%
Smith: 18%

************************

From 3 point range:

Crawford: 57%
Hinrich: 43%
Johnson: 40%

Why do people keep talking about the TNT crew. Those folks dont know basketball. All of the experts picked Orlando to beat us. Even though we havent won the series with Orlando yet, just about everyone is sticking to their picks because they feel Orlando will come back and beat the Hawks and win the series. The Hawks may have trouble closing Orlando out, but it wont be due to lack of effort. It will be because Orlando might start making shots and make it difficult for the Hawks to put the final nail in the coffin. I still say Hawks in 6.

But to look at this from another angle . . what is the best shot each Hawk player should take, if they can’t get the ball right to the rim? During the regular season, it was these shots: ( stats come from NBA’s stats cube )

Johnson floater in the paint: 52%

Horford midrange jumper outside the paint: 51%

Crawford midrange jumper: 43%

Hinrich jumper from anywhere outside paint: 43% ( shot 43% from midrange, corner 3, and above the break 3 )

Marvin midrange jumper outside the paint: 42%

Josh Smith corner three: 42%

*************************

During the playoffs:

Crawford corner three: 100% ( only 4 attempts though )

Johnson floater in the paint: 68%

Smith running hook/offensive rebound put back in the paint: 67%

Hinrich midrange jumper outside the paint: 50%

Crawford three from out top or from the wing: 47%

Horford midrange jumper: 37%

*******************

This is what Hubie was talking about last year during the playoffs. Figure out where your guys are most efficient, and try to get them shots in those areas.

Well, like you mentioned in your article we’ve witnessed this for some time now. However, since all of the so-called experts picked Orlando to darn near sweep the Hawks, I don’t care how ugly we get the WIN….Just get the WIN!!!!!! We get absolutely no love from the National media. If we do eventually close out the series and advance, the talk will then shift to how easy it will be for Chicago to advance to the Conference Championship game.

And as for the TNT crew, I don’t have a problem with what they were saying during halftime of that game on Sunday. The facts are that the Hawks DID take a ton of bad shots in that quarter, at a time in which we could’ve really stretched out that lead. The bad shots and the turnovers kept a game that should’ve been a mini-blowout of about 12 – 15 points, relatively close at halftime.

That’s the main reason why Kenny Smith was ripping us.

Plus, keep in mind that the TNT studio show is in Atlanta. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they have caught a few Hawk games either on a Wednesday or Friday night, and seen this team live. The same team that we’ve seen all year.

And as annoying as Jon Barry is, he lives in ATL too, and probably sees the team more than most national commentators.

But it is what it is here. We don’t have a great setup PG that can make life easier for our bigs and for perimeter guys like JJ and Marvin. We don’t have good low post scorers who can create their own shot and score one on one down on the low block.

Those are the two offensive positions that usually make an offense efficient. Then you add the fact that we really don’t have great shooters here, especially from 3 point range, and it adds to the offensive problems at times. Thank God that guys like Jamal, Kirk, and even JJ are making 3s this series. But because we don’t have that here on most nights, we’re forced to do other things to score.

Pick and pops for our center to shoot a jumper.
ISOs for our guards to score or create for others.
Telling our PF to run the floor so he can dunk in transition.
Grabbing offensive rebounds, because we’ll miss outside shots.

It is what it is.

All we can do is hope these guys play more to their strengths as offensive players, than to take the easy way out

“Question. Why list the shooting from midrange (16 – 23 feet), then list the overall shooting % of the players? Here are the facts.”

I didn’t mean to confuse you with the midrange stats. In retrospect, I convoluted too many points to together. The midrange shooting stat was really there to highlight the league average vs. the Hawks team (39.4% vs. 43.3%). This shows that the Hawks shoots better than average from midrange. This point was not so much about Josh Smith but about the Hawks team.

The other point was to highlight a similarity of negative fans perception between Glen Davis and Josh Smith when it comes to shooting perimeter jumpers. The Celtic fan article used the midrange stats to show Glen Davis shortcomings. I probably should have used similar midrange stats to show for Josh Smith as you asserted.

The other point was to use the overall FG% and TO stats to illustrate the perceived anxieties of the fans when certain Hawks players have the ball. The stats show other than AL, JJ has the lower FG% numbers at 43.5% and highest TO stat number of 3.2 TOPG during the playoff yet JJ is our Alpha Dog in the crucial moment of the game demanding the ball. At least the stats numbers suggest that Josh Smith should also be a factor during the final moments of a game since his FG% is 49% though his TO number at 2.5 TOPG (2nd team highest) is problematic. As your stats pointed out though, he should work inside exclusively.

Fundamentals

April 26th, 2011
12:29 pm

Everyone on planet Earth knows Josh should always take it to the hole except Josh. Do we need to discuss that with anyone but Josh?

Horford repeatedly says they need to learn to find another way to score, a way to get inside…and yet he constantly shoots at the elbow.

Joe and Jamal believe they can hit the clutch 3…but fail at crunch time.

Good teams learn how to score inside at a high percentage forcing the defense into fouls and thus changing the availability of certain players. ORL is thin inside. We need to exploit that. Look for Dwight’s frustrations to boil over tonight if things go badly. Take it to him hard. He’ll be ready to do too much!

If the Hawks had drafted CP3 or Deron? Common sense says they WOULD have gotten pt! Why? Aaaah. Duuh …

1. They are lottery picks! That means you are one of 5 worst team in the NBA who had no PG ahead of them.

2. They are NBA upon being drafted and are special players, head and shoulders ahead of any pack.

3. They are not the #21 pick, or 7th PG taken who are rated well below the Lottery. Therefore, have little to prove.

Come on pessimist! Think before you bump the gums.
If you said Rondo or a 2nd round gem wouldn’t get any pt, then maybe your logic would hold some water, but don’t just bump your gums afgainst 2 brain cells. Find your argument and develop some real thoughts to make your point.

And you take away the shots against the expired shot clocks or just plain old bad shots taken, which were 8 total in game 4?

At what point do you NOT give the Hawks stifling perimeter defenders all the credit. There is a reason you can get off 8 good shots!

It’s called DEFENSE! On the 1 of 15 other missed shots?
You can once again credit the Hawks DEFENSE!

It’s OK … You can give the Hawks CREDIT for doing something right.
