From what I’m hearing, the TNT talkers spent a lot of time last night ragging on the Hawks for their poor shot selection. This just in. . . .
I can imagine the collective shrugs of my blog people who know this team and have become accustomed to (if not totally accepting of) its weaknesses. I also figure you are annoyed by the national nit-picking of those warts by people just now paying attention to the Hawks and who hadn’t bothered to take a moment to look at numbers which clearly show they love jump shots (and are pretty good at making them).
I assure you it’s nothing personal. The same thing happened at this time last year. People who hadn’t watched the Hawks all year and/or analyze their tendencies were appalled to discover that Joe spent a lot of time dribbling on one side of the floor as his teammates watched or that Josh gets frustrated by calls and loses focus.
I remember my response to puzzled Orlando media types querying me about those topics: “Um, yeah. That’s the Hawks.” And whenever I would make an observation about the team they cover regularly, they would say: “Um, yeah. That’s the Magic.”
So here we are again. The Hawks are getting roasted for being the Hawks. We’ve seen it the last three games: The Hawks built a sizable lead by generally taking good shots and making them, then lost it by generally taking bad shots and missing them (or missing more of the good ones).
It’s not as if the Hawks don’t understand what’s going on.
“We have to be smarter with our shot selection, especially when we are up,” Al said. “I think guys want to put it away with one play, one big three or something. But it doesn’t work that way. If you are not hitting you have to do something different. Attack more, change it up.”
How long have we been hearing that from these guys? It’s April 25 and so it’s doubtful they are going to change their habits now. And, really, oftentimes the Hawks are only encouraged to keep jacking Js by their early success.
Consider Game 4. According to Synergy Sports Technology, the Hawks had five isolation plays in the first quarter and scored a robust eight points, all on jump shots. In the second quarter they scored three points on two isos. In the third they scored three points on five isos. And in the final period, they scored seven points on eight isos.
In all, the Hawks scored 22 points on on 20 isolation plays in Game 4, with all but four of those points by way of jumper. I’m guessing the TNT talkers weren’t ripping the Hawks for shooting too many Js when they had it rolling early.
The problem isn’t that the Hawks can’t score that way but, as Al points out, they still don’t seem to be able to grasp that when that way is not working and then find another way (though J.J. getting to the basket and to the free-throw line in the fourth quarter was a positive step).
“The last couple games then third-quarter shot selection has been a problem,” L.D. said. “Not being patient enough in moving the basketball. When we do move the ball and have been patient we’ve gotten good things out of it. When we start pounding the ball and we start playing a little one-on-one it gets a little stagnant.
“We watch film every day and point these things out. You hope that, particularly in the playoffs, these guys can see where they do get stagnant and they can say, ‘OK, here is what we need to do here, here is what we need to do there,’ because we have shown in this series when we do move the basketball we become tougher to defend. But when we start standing around and pounding the ball and start settling for 3-point shots, we become easy to defend.”
L.D. knows it, the players know it, you know it, I know it . . . hell, anyone who pays attention to the Hawks knows it. And now the national talkers know it, too, since they are watching the Hawks.

“many of Josh’s problems are fixable. But, there the same problems we’ve been ranting about for years now, and they’re still existent. That’s why people question the guys mind. ”
Is Al passing up open shots or Joe pounding the ball into the floor for ten seconds trying to decide what to do or Marvin falling down when he drives into the lane or Jamal making no effort to get around picks on defense not also “fixable”? Have we not also been seeing those same problems for years now?
I can’t speak for Rod or anyone else, but to me, Smoove is just one of many good but not great players on this team who has plenty of flaws that prevent him from carrying this team like a superstar, but whose positives outweigh his negatives. I don’t have a problem with the criticism of Smoove, but I do have a problem with the idea that his flaws are somehow more detrimental than anyone else’s flaws on the team. Just because the negative effects of an errant Smoove jumper are more obvious to casual fans than the negative effects of Al passing up a makeable shot or Joe pounding the ball into the floor and taking a contested shot doesn’t make Smoove’s mistake any more egregious.

Most athletic group of cats in the league, and the least coachable group of cats in the league; nevertheless, up 3 to 1 on the Magic. Who’d have thunk it? If the ‘team leader’ consistently bought in and verbally held the other cats accountable, this group would be infinitely better. Many players are more inclined to take their cues from the cats in the trenches with them (and knuckleheads can be particularly distracting), and less from the HC and his staff. CP3, Rondo, Deron, et al are extensions of the HC, respected by their teammates, and help ensure the cats around them submit to coaching. Even ‘bad boy’ Ron Artest toes the line in LA, and it’s largely because of his respect for Kobe – a teammate – and the fact that Kobe holds him and the other cats accountable. Phil and his staff can’t do it alone. That type of personality is glaringly absent from this Hawks squad, and my gosh does it show. But what’s not to like about holding a 3-1 lead?

Najeh,
Just as how Josh’s errors are more obvious to casual fans, I think its also more obvious to opposing coaches and other players. And unless he changes, he will have a hard time making the all star team (imo), even after KG retires.
Fans, media, coaches etc have overlooked Joe’s pounding and Al’s timidness to vote them to multiple AS teams. but they dont overlook josh’s flaws.
I dont know why. but Josh has made it clear that making the AS team is very important to him, so I hope he comes back and plays more consistently to his strngths next year.

“And you can’t argue Horford not taking open shots hurts this team more than Josh Smith’s insistence on playing on the perimeter.
Al Horford can’t play well in the post as you point out, and thus he plays more perimeter. He’s playing to his strength.
Josh Smith plays better in the post, but insists on playing on the perimeter. He’s playing towards his weakness.”
Al playing on the perimeter on offense is not really the problem. Al getting the ball 15 feet away from the hoop, where he is arguably more effective than any other big man in the league, and passing the ball instead of taking the shot or driving it is a problem. I don’t know if Synergy or whatever has data to show this, but I’d like to know how many of those times that Al deferred on the shot actually resulted in a made basket for the Hawks. Smoove is too aggressive; Al is too passive.
Just to be clear, I only bring up Al because of the prevailing feeling both on this blog and elsewhere that he is beyond criticism and that the Hawks’ team-wide problems don’t apply to or affect him, not because of any personal dislike for him. Al is one of my favorite players on this team, but he like every other Hawk has plenty of flaws himself.

To be fair, it’s not exactly a group of A-list coaches that have had a chance to coach them. We have no idea how coachable this team might be with a good coach.

On droughts: We obviously need to find ways to score, but then what about if we considered a different approach of playing through the droughts like Detroit did 5 or so years ago and hanging our hats on D. The Celtics often had this problem when Ray and Paul struggled to find shots, but found ways to win games.
I may be somewhat off, but I get the feeling our D is better than it is given credit for.So, during a drought period, how about we just trust our defense and work our way onto unforced errors by the opponents, rebounding and second chance opportunities with our athleticism. We’ll take what we are given.
When we need a basket, I would like to see us run more screen and rolls on the free throw line for JJ and Al/JS, in addition to using Marvin on the weak-side for his size advantage whenever we get into droughts. As much as we love to hate Marvin, he is rather consistent in what we need-off the ball movement and solid D. How often do we run plays with Jamal as a spot up shooter in the corner 3 as opposed to working with the ball?
Even if it means sitting our offensive guys for longer times, it helps us play to our strengths-we can force turnovers and play to our advantage. You don’t become a defensive juggernaut without relying on D when the game is on the line, and I don’t see many liabilities on the Defensive end “most times”
It sounds like a Hubie Brown soliloquy, and the more I think of that, it seems like he has been advocating for this job for a while especially considering that he lives here.

Josh’s flaws
I agree that his flaws are nothing to his skills and attributes, and a lot of the criticism is because we have high expectations of Josh. If Josh wasn’t such a “physical specimen of potential” on the court, none of these expectations would be filling this blog roll. The outbursts and crying for fouls are things that can easily be changed with a coaching change. We have never had a coach who hold players accountable on this team. When a player jacks up a poor shot, he better hope that he is not a bench player because those are the only guys getting pulled from games besides JC.

Franchise Ruin in full effect. No sensible Hawks fan can get excited about winning a 1st round series. As I said before the playoffs start we can make it to the finals and I would still not be impressed because we have way too many flaws to be consistently good. We need a legit NBA C and a starting PG that can grow with the core and that’s just for beginners. We need to totally revamp our bench so that more than just Jamal is a impact player every night.

Rod,
about this: “Lets remember that Al Horford is one of our All Stars, and is widely considered by most of the bloggers as the greatest thing since sliced bread.”
OK Rod, I’ll call a bit of hyperbole on this one. If you had made this statement a year ago, I’d agree, but since Horford has abandoned the paint, his bandwagon is a LOT lighter.
I’m of the mind (and I’ll bet that most bloggers agree) that Al needs to get his ass back in the paint and grind like he did 07-09. I don’t think that “most bloggers” “widely consider” him to be anything more than a solid PF these days. Just my opinion.
Sorry to weaken your Josh argument (I’m on your side there, as I’m sure you know) but I just don’t see Horford as the blog darling like he was a year ago.
That said, you have accused him (Al) of something he did NOT do:
“blame Horford who has cried and wined all year about playing the position that he was voted an allstar at.”
All year Rod? Big Time Hyperbole this time. When has it come up since the season started? Do I have to re-quote what Al said in the offseason about the Hawks having mismatches when he plays the 5 and Josh plays the 4?
Yes, there are bloggers who seem to worship him, but not many. And not NEARLY as many this year as last. Or even as many as the beginning of the season.

Josh has a partially torn MCL. He relies on his athleticism to change the game, and the knee has taken away a lot of his explosiveness. Right after the trade for Kirk, he got injured. In the few quarters they did play together with Josh healthy, the team defense looked unbelievable. I’m really proud of the way he’s managed to play the 3 and impact games despite being at a disadvantage. Being bigger and stronger than Turk doesn’t really help because he’s lost some quickness with the knee. Comparing Josh and Al at the 4 is beyond pointless, they’re both just doing what it takes to win.

Najeh,
The Memphis team we blew out on opening night is not the same team thats blowing out the Spurs. That team on opening night did not have Marc Gasol, and Zach Randolp got hurt and only played 15 minutes. That allowed ZaZa to have 17 pts and 11 rebs in 30 minutes.
And in the second game, we only beat them by 3 in ATL.
If we were to play them now, I wouldnt be surprised to see them win a best of 7 against us.

Too many people on here worry about what position
a guy plays.
Sorry Rev, but do you want Al playing the [5] and guarding Dwight?
Just because he plays a position on offense Dwight doesn’t have to
guard the same pos. #. So if Collins is in the game [or Zaza]
that’s who Dwight is gonna guard.
Other people worry about Al would not make all-stars @ the [4].
Not so fast my friend.
I contend that a basketball player is a basketball player. period.
There are some who would take my last statement to it’s logical
conclusion and say “Al would never make all-stars playin’ pt. guard”.

It’s nice to be beating the Magic. I was looking on their blogs and it appears the world is ending. And worst of all for the Orlando fans, they’re being taken apart by the Hawks, they call us “the utterly mediocre Hawks.” And I wouldn’t be able to agree more except for what I’ve seen thus far in the playoffs. Are the Magic that much of a sinking ship, or is something really there? The playoffs are a different breed than the regular season. Where to begin…….I think Josh Smith is injured to the extent where he can no longer do what he used to do. I hope he gets better and a classier organization might tell him to go rehab and get ready for next year. (I myself would tell Kobe to get an MRI and not play if he’s going to screw himself up any further….) Smith’s mental attitude is something else…..Why did he grab the net and hang on while a play was still developing….and yes, he could have cost the Hawks game 3 or 4..
Sad to say, without jumping ability and ability to use his wonderful body freely without pain or injury, Josh loses any value (and potential market value) he might have had….as for him NEVER BEING AN ALL-STAR, I think he was an all-star already……When I look back at last game, I see Josh taking several key rebounds, making a critical hook and driving down the lane and dunking……but you can’t be standing around doing absolutely nothing 20 feet away from the basket……
Hinrich, Hinrich, Hinrich…..He made critical shots last game, fewer turnovers….moved the ball. Played well. Leave him alone…Not his fault we traded Jordan Crawford….that’s on management.
We also traded rights to Conley….and Jason Terry….and Nazir Mohammed and a heck of a lot of players who are doing well.
There is a show about the behind the scenes story with the Boston Celtics which runs on NBA-TV. in one scene, we see Doc Rivers telling the club (which has just won two games) that in his mind the games were losses because the Celtics didn’t come up to expectations. (and he’s pissed too, yelling at them). It also came to light that the new guy (Green) had to pass several initiation tests before he would be accepted on the team and that there is a clearly defined pecking order based on excellence. Wow! I think that’s the way to go….pride in performance…..not pride in ragging your opponents or winning in a clearly dysfunctional way….
And that is why TNT is ragging on the Hawks…..their play was unacceptable and clearly stupid at times. and no one can put their finger on the disease……
That disease must be cured before the hawks will win respect. I still want them to win in the worst way but I also want them to be cured in mind and spirit.

I really think this series has many people confused. The bottom line is an Orlando team formerly laden with talent may have the worst 1 on 1 defenders in the league, and the second dumbest coach in the league(LD wrapped that award up during the regular season). For what we have had success with, which is iso with two players, they absolutely have no answer for. They are shooting a whopping 19% from 3, yet we are still barely winning. Yall actually think they can beat any other team in the playoffs other that the Magic. Keep dreaming. Woodson and LD have won enough games to finish 2nd in regular season last year and 4th this year and people are actually content. On paper we have some of the best young talent in the leauge and have unnderachieved for the past 4 years. True we have won some games but if you think this team is performing to the talent level that is on our roster you are sadly mistaken. As I watched Memphis last night without Rudy Gay, I saw what we could be. We did not need to pay 1 player 123 mill. We just needed a coach to develop and nurture the young ultra talented team we have and watch our horses run. Jeff Teague is at least as good as Mike Conley, but he has played since day 1 and his coach believes in him. We keep getting 30 old vets to come in two years at a time and crush any confidence our potential franchise players have. FREE JEFF TEAGUE AND JORDAN CRAWFORD MUCH LOVE ON ALL YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

quick points….
1. Dwight Howard is acting more and more like a psychopath. He claims he was going to hold a shootaround yesterday and that he told players to stay in Atlanta if they didn’t think they could win. He continues to elbow people (including our already confused Josh Smith last game). No doubt he’s threatening to leave Orlando completely if things don’t work out his way. Almost looks like Howard is living in a dream world. My significant other’s take…..Doesn’t matter what talent you have…if you are that deluded, you must go somewhere else.
2. Free Teague brigade…..I suggest we free Teague to guard Rose if we play Chicago…..let that be his full time job…forget offense….shadow Rose…steer him to double teams…..use Teague’s quickness to our advantage for once…..seems to be working with Collins…….a few years ago, LA played Philadelphia for the title. Tyronn Lue got a hairstyle to match Alan Iverson and stayed in his pants all series…..must have pissed Iverson off…..think it was 4-0 Lakers…..
I’m done….

yes sam’l, josh is on one wheel now and no highlights form him. it also might show him the future and maybe he ought to work on the game he can live and die with that being a post game and handles around the basket. he wants to be someone else but he has to realize his days of flying are nearing an end. his next contract may depend on what he works on to improve. i know josh works hard, i just hope he decides to work on the right things this summer including working with a sports psychologist on how to keep his emotions in check. btw i dont mind is outside shots as long as they are in the flow of the game not when you are up by fifteen and needing to blow the other team out by keeping the pressure up on them. he is pretty good under pressure not when he can think about it.

I would love for the Hawks to win tonight. Nothing like clinching on the other team’s court to shut their fans up. Winning tonight might even get SVG fired.

Don’t need Teague to guard Rose. Let Teague play as soon as CJ Watson gets in.
If we fall down 2-0, switch everything up and put in Teague Hinrich Joe as 1 2 3

Next series we can activate Damien. If we use regular starting 5 and Deng destroys Marvin, we can just use Damien and get him to play aggressive defense.
I’m loving this Bulls matchup….
AS LONG AS JOE ATTACKS HIS MAN AND HORFORD STEPS UP AND OUTPLAYS NOAH. The whole Hawks/Bulls series is on Joe and Jamal scoring the basketball. We can beat this team. Hinrich will be pumped up too
WIN TONIGHT
