Magic at Atlanta Hawks Game 4: Jamal Crawford, by the way, is balling
We interrupt the talk about fights and flops with the news that Jamal is having a good series.
Jamal was known as a good scorer/volume shooter on bad teams when he came to Atlanta. He shed that image with the most efficient season of his career while playing on a good team. Jamal also was the only guy to show up in the playoffs against Orlando last season but hardly anyone noticed because the Hawks were taking beatdowns (good scorer, bad team again).
After Jamal’s production and efficiency fell off this season in L.D.’s egalitarian offense, hardly anyone was expecting what we’ve seen so far in this series. According to ESPN Stats, Jamal is just the seventh guy in league history to score 20 points or more as a reserve in three consecutive postseason games.
“It’s different because in the playoffs, everybody knows every play you are calling,” Jamal said. “They went over it. They have had three days to prepare. At times it comes down to making plays and creating stuff. I love the big stage. I love playing at the highest level. I used the last month of the season to get in a rhythm and get relaxed.”
That part about loving the big stage is true. Anyone who knows Jamal will tell you he loves the attention. Shoot, he will tell you it’s the reason he was hyped about joining the Hawks: “I was just excited about getting to play on the big stage and on a good team because more people notice that. ”
Jamal’s love of the limelight is an emotional counter to the logical argument that he can’t keep this up because he’s shooting way over his norm, especially 3-pointers. It’s also a way to explain how that lucky, banked-in, challenged 3 in Game 3 sort of made sense in a Jamal kind of way.
“It’s no fluke, really,” Al said. “We are probably a little surprised at the way that shot went in. But he likes that. He likes being in that position.”
Notes
- Twin appeared to be moving a bit stiffly before the game but he’s in the starting lineup. “Just try to keep it warm and pay through any discomfort,” he said.
- L.D. on Al possibly guarding Dwight: “I won’t completely rule that out. We will just have to look at the rhythm of the game and the flow of the game.”
- Al on defending Dwight without fouling: “It’s really tough. If you are fronting him, maybe you can get away with some stuff. The whole key is to keep him off [the block] and make him shoot over you. You have to know when to [front] him. You have to pick your spots.”
- Hilton Armstrong: “I have to wait for my name to be called to try to defend Dwight and give a couple hard fouls if need be. . . . We just have to try to be solid and hold our ground against him. He’s strong but we have to keep fighting and be physical with him.”
- L.D. on Stan Van Gundy’s flop complaints: “Maybe that evens up all of the illegal screens that’s been set. . . . We haven’t gotten the whistle. We are not going to cry and complain about it. We are just going to keep playing. This is what playoff basketball is. You can’t cry about a whistle, you have to learn to play through it.”
- Van Gundy said he’s not “posturing for calls” but just doesn’t like flopping. “I am talking about 7-foot, 270-pound guys falling down like they are grade-school kids out there. It’s not just our series. You see it all the time in the NBA. It’s something I don’t like. I think it’s bad for the NBA and I wish it would stop. I don’t have any problem with how the series is being called. . . . A lot of the flops they haven’t even called fouls on Dwight, which is good. I’m just saying don’t flop. Stand up and play.”
- Zaza: “So what do you expect him to say, Dwight keeps elbowing guys? Of course he is going to defend his player. I am not surprised. But I know I am not [flopping]. We are just trying to play basketball. We are trying to win the game. That is our goal.”
- Q-Rich is starting in place of J-Rich. “It allows us to stay bigger,” Van Gundy said. “I like J.J. coming off the bench. We can run some stuff for him. It doesnt’ put all of our offensive guys on the floor at the same time.”
- Arenas will be back in Orlando’s rotation. “We are going to need five perimeter guys,” Van Gundy said. “He’s going to be in there and I expect him to play well.”
- L.D. on how Orlando’s lineup change might affect Joe: “The way they’ve been playing him, they’ve been coming every single time just a matter of how we play out of it. I don’t see that much difference. Dwight is coming every single time.”
- Said Joe: “I wouldn’t say it opens up much. They may double a lot more. With Jason, I thought they picked spots where they played one-one-one and were satisfied with it. Now if a smaller man is on me maybe they come with the double team a lot quicker. We have to see. I think it’s neither here nor there. If we come out with the effort we need we definitely can get a win.”
- Q-Rich: “We are going to bring out intensity. As far as all of that extra stuff goes that Collins and them are doing over there, we can’t control anything. But like [J-Rich] said, we going to protect ourselves. We are not going to be bullied or back down from anything.”
- L.D.: “We haven’t taken a step back when it gets physical and emotions are high. Because when you do that, you expose yourself. We don’t condone fighting but we are not going to back down.”

The energy by the Hawks is great right now. They just need to play smarter. There were too many careless turnovers as a the result of possibly being over-anxious. The Hawks have the right intensity, they just need to make sure that that energy is smart energy.

It’s really odd to see Powell as the first reserve big man to enter the game for the Hawks. L.D. doesn’t really have many options with Zaza out, but I am guessing that the main reason why Powell is playing rather than Hilton or Etan is due to the fact that he’s better offensively than they are (with his jumper). L.D. loves those jumpers lol. At any rate, the Hawks played pretty well in that first quarter, and hopefully Horford will be back in for Powell soon. The energy in that first quarter by the Hawks was excellent. It didn’t always result in smart decisions, but there’s no doubt that the team is fired up for this game, and I love to see that.

@ SlimJr . . . we’re not going to have enough to pay Jamal if a team really values his scoring prowess. The better he plays during the playoffs, the more likely he’ll get a sizeable deal from someone. I could see a team like Jersey giving Jamal 7 – 8 mill a year to be that super-sub off the bench.

Good to be up 9 at the half. Hawks have been getting a little lucky though. They haven’t closed out on the 3s all that well but the Magic keep missing them anyway, and the Hawks have made their fair share of bad decisions. Hopefully they realize this and come out focused in the second half. Can’t get too happy now.

Jay Dubu . . . it’s not shutting us up. Josh is one of the biggest reasons why we’re not up more than we are right now. We just want the dude to play smart. Take away all of the dumb plays, and he actually has a nice all around half of basketball with 4 pts – 4 assists – 7 rebounds.
But he’s literally given the Magic about 6 points with bad defense, and has cost us a few possessions with bad shots and turnovers.
If he calms down, we’ll win this game.
Nice to see that we did close out the quarter. Up 9 . . when we should be up by at least 15.

I’m looking at the stat sheet and the biggest problem for the Hawks right now is turnovers and fouls. If we can maintain this offensive efficiency and energy, and also cut down on turnovers, while keeping the free-throw attempts about even, we should be alright.

Can’t do that in the playoffs though. The Magic are a shot 3-point shooting streak away from quickly getting back in this game. They’re 1 – 14 from 3 point range. Had they merely been a still terrible 4 – 14, this would be a tie game right now.
Dallas should let everyone know that you have to play the full 48 minutes in the playoffs. When you have a team close to dead, you need to go ahead and kill them off.
We’re shooting 53% while the Magic shooting 27% . . but we’re only up 9.

Besides C-Webb I cant recall the last time the TNT crew said something positive about the Hawks even last year when we were playing well in the regular season the always dogged us .
TNT is the official stations of the ECF the hawks need to make it just so they can say screw that entire crew when they want to do there little behind the scenes stuff and interviews.
It boils down to for them is that Dwight aint winning so they dont care or did people forget what happened last year when the Magic was beating us.
By the way we are not playing for the title right now we are playing to go up 3-1 on the Magic and we are winning .

northcyde, I’m being facetious. This is that aspect of the Hawks that frustrates the devil out of me. They could be up by 20 right now and we could be enjoying a beatdown right now. After last year the Hawks ought to want to kick the Magic in the head repeatedly. Instead they start throwing lazy passes, taking contested jumpshots early in the shot clock, and stand around on the defensive boards. They are not even running out at the Magic 3pt. shots with any conviction. They are willing for the Magic to hit a couple of threes before they decide to put forth effort.

Sleepy, keep in mind though. TNT is based in Atlanta. And I’m sure that when those guys are in town to do a show, that they may catch a Hawks game every once in a while. They see the Hawks much more than most national people, and know exactly how this team plays.

Meanwhile, the Hawks continue to let this team hang around. This is kind of going like the Memphis game last night. The Griz had a chance to bury the Spurs in the 2nd quarter, but let them hang around. They eventually came all the way back to tie the game in the 4th quarter, before the Griz closed it out at the end.
Hopefully the Hawks won’t let it get to that.

the hawks are showing the same signs they’ve shown all year.
the same schizophrenic bullstuff.
the hawks will have times when they’re on point. the ball is moving, shots are falling.
but the hawks will never escape from their bad habits. time after time they resort to iso ball, wasted possessions, turnovers, lack of ball movement, forced shots – - which ultimately lead to lulls.
the thing about this series though is you’ve got a team on the other side that isn’t very good that can’t capitalize on the hawks typical bullstuff.
this is why if you put the hawks up against a more formidable team, a team that has better team defense and that can capitalize on the hawks mishaps, the hawks get blown away.

Good substitution by Drew. I feel like Horford can guard Howard at least as good as Powell or Hilton, if not better, and this lineup should help us to get out of this offensive funk. Also, I like the idea of Howard actually having to focus on his man on the defensive end, rather than just being free to roam around and help out his teammates.

The offense is looking horrible. We’ve got to get the “ball hogs” under control. Right now, it’s like both the Magic and the Hawks are playing against the Hawks. Jamal and Joe have been awful in this second half. Jamal has hit some tough shots in this half, but the shot selection has just been awful. Joe is really annoying me right now. He needs to stop with the isolation. This game is too close to settle for bad shots. Every possession is huge right now. The clock is starting to become a factor, but that doesn’t mean that you should just hog the ball until the end of the clock. Move the ball and get a good shot. Use the clock to set things up, not to make it easy for the defense to key in on you.

Every team runs some sort of ISO at the end of games if they have the lead. But the key is to get a good shot, or at least A SHOT out of the possession. A turnover in the open floor will kill you in that situation.
Jamal will probably handle the ball on the next possession. Look for him to definitely shoot the ball, which means the bigs need to crash the offensive boards.
But they should run pick and roll with Jamal and Al . . just like they did Friday night in this situation.

The ISOs aren’t bad in this situation. It’s just that you need the guy to get into the lane to either get his shot off, or create a shot for others. PGs do this all the time. But we have our SGs doing this. And they love the long 3 or 20 footer, instead of trying to get to the rim.

That was as ugly as it gets. The Hawks just about drained all the enthusiasm out of me. The only positive to take away from this game is that the Magic are awful. I despise that team, I despise their arrogant tv announcers, and I despise Howard’s constant complaining and dirty play. (Of course all’s forgiven if he signs with Atlanta).

Against the Bulls, I would hope our frontcourt guys take it to them. In the past, Smith and Horford have had very good games against the Bulls. In that series, you’ll see Marvin inserted back into the starting lineup, because we’ll need him against Deng. Smith and Horford can concentrate on scoring on and slowing down Boozer and Noah.
That’s a different type of series. JJ and Jamal will still get some of his shots, but the going will be much tougher. Brewer and Bogans are decent defenders and won’t give JJ and Jamal the type of looks that they’re getting now. But make no mistake, when both JJ and Jamal have it going, they can score the tough baskets.
I’m not writing the Magic off yet though. They’ll play with desperation in Game 5. But if we do get past them, Smith and Horford may be the stars against the Bulls, rather than JJ and Jamal.

A possible Bulls series will be different. Guys like Marvin, Damien, and even Teague may have to play and come up big for us. I could see a scenario in which Rose is killing us, and racking up the fouls vs whomever is guarding him ( mainly Hinrich ). So we may need those reserve guards to help guard Rose. And Marvin really needs to step up vs Deng. He destroyed Marvin the last 2 games we played them.
With the way the Bulls have destroyed us the past 2 meetings, Drew may need all of those guys to come up big in at least one game, to get win a few games vs the Bulls. To win the series though, the stars will have to come up big in the 4th quarter . .whether it be defensively or offensively.

heh heh northcyde, i was in 111 on the opposite side with a very attractive date and i had to take a chance and look. it was close but i got away with it. i even caught her derierre well before she had the camera on her, then it was jumbo tron time as her face is fine too. guess you watched her until she was out of sight up the ramp?
yes teague might need some time along with damien. josh better bring his bang body and thibs has boozer playing a different way than sloan did i guess. a lot of folks sneered at the idea of boozer having an impact with chicago. they were dead wrong after thibs benched the guy early on to get his attention and move on together.

The Hawks are the worse winning team in the NBA. They win in spite of there coaches and front office. Whatever offense they are running does not work well enough. They don’t have a floor leader who gets everyone into the right situation and above and beyond all they are a jumpshooting team that will never win anything worth noting as currently constructed.

3 – 1 !!!!! Hope J-Rich had a good seat for the game tonight.
I think I care way too much about the Hawks. I was almost ripping my hair out during this game. If you notice someone in Section 303 leaning on the railing, towel over thier shoulder, and looking like they were about to pass out that was me. Getting to be way too invested in this team.
Josh Smith is playing his way out of town. He was beyond awful tonight. I don’t care what his numbers were….he almost blew this game by himself.
Would be a major sign of growth if the Hawks go and end this thing on Tuesday night. Can’t wait to watch.

If Bibby and Mo’ were still here, I think the Hawks just got swept. Good Trade!! And did you see how awful Bibby looked against Holiday?
The Bulls have shown me nothing in the playoffs. I don’t care what happened in the regular season, we’re in a brand new season right now called the playoffs. If the Hawks can finish off these stiffs Tuesday, we can beat the Bulls.
The Heat haven’t shown me much either in the playoffs. And the 1 team in the East I thought may have trouble, the Celts, just swept the Knicks.
And if NOLA beat the Lakers tonight, and they’re winning last I checked, that’s a 2-2 series. Anybody’s series if NOLA wins tonight.
We get ZaZa back Tuesday. We have our foot on their throat, Finish them off and let’s not go to a game 6.
And don’t the Hawks “feel” alot more mature than last season? No late night partying against the Bucks kinda stuff. Win, and take care of business.

Our offense bothers the hell outta me.
Sure we all love seeing Jamal break ankles and hit crazy shots, but this method will suffer miserably later in the Playoffs (assuming we move on).
LD said his OFFENSE IS UNPREDICTABLE and that will be our big advantage in the Playoffs, but I see nothing. It’s just ISOs and awful jumpshots being taken. Why can Joe not attack more and do that deadly floater? he used to do that all the time in years past. Is he scared of contact?
And MAJOR props to Hinrich. I don’t know if Jameer is breaking down (probably isn’t since he had a big game 1) or Hinrich’s D has been stellar, but Jameer has been a non-factor lately
When Gilbert was going off earlier, I was kinda hoping J-Rich had NOT been suspended so we could’ve seen his sorry @$$ out there instead

Normally I am being snarky and rude when I post Marvin’s stat-line but I have got to give him some credit tonight. I don’t know how he managed to do it but he had a +10 in the +/-; especially since he only scored 2 points, 1 rebound, and 2 steals. He must have been lock-down on defense tonight. The next highest +/- for the Hawks was +5 for Al & Jamal.
