Ryan Anderson had some telling comments the other day regarding Orlando’s shooting struggles in Games 1 and 2. As reported by Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel Anderson said:
“They know how to guard us,” Anderson said. “They have a great game plan coming into these games. They’re trying to eliminate aspects of our offense that we’re really used to going through. We’re not getting as many open shots. We’re not getting as many 3s. So we just need to continue to work on the glass.”
It sounds like the Magic has made a focused effort to get offensive rebounds because they realize they need all of of the possessions they can get. Atlanta, using the Dwight Defense, has managed to eliminate what’s normally the second-most efficient part of Orlando’s offense.
The Magic have launched 45 3-point attempts in the two games and made just 11. For the season they averaged 25.6 attempts and 9.4 makes overall and 21 attempts and 4.8 makes against the Hawks, both lows vs. any opponent.
I fired up the Synergy Sports Technology machine to look at each of Orlando’s 45 3-point attempts in the series to see where the needle points on the “missing open shots vs. not getting many open shots” scale.
The verdict: The Magic haven’t gotten many clean looks but they got more in Game 2 than Game 1. By my subjective count, in Game 1 Orlando players got nine good looks on 3-point attempts (with two of those in garbage time) and made three. In Game 2 they got 13 clean looks on 3-point attempts and made four (J.J. actually closed out pretty strong on that that J-Rich dagger). Those totals don’t count two long heaves at the buzzer by the Magic.
How did the Magic get those clean looks? A breakdown:
Game 1
Game 2
Five thoughts after looking at those plays:
1. The Magic recognize that Jamal isn’t fighting over screens, providing much resistance against dribble penetration or keeping track of his man when they rebound misses. They are looking to exploit all of those weaknesses to set up 3-point shots.
2. All of the other Atlanta perimeter players have been generally sound in their efforts to limit 3s.
3. Hinrich’s awareness and ability to cover a lot of ground really helps Atlanta’s cause–there were a handful of 3-point attempts where he helped off his man and still was able to recover and challenge kick-out 3s.
3. Stan Van Gundy’s quip that “I don’t really have a strategy for getting guys to shoot the ball well” applied more in Game 2 than Game 1 and is relevant to Turkoglu most of all. Closer to the truth is that Van Gundy doesn’t really have a strategy to get guys clean looks against the Dwight Defense.
4. Atlanta’s length bothers Orlando’s shooters so late close-outs or even the threat of them tend to make the Magic rush their 3-point attempts.
5. The Magic have gotten exactly one clean look off a 3-pointer from a Dwight post-up.

Good win, but in the big picture, this series is still up for grabs. An Orlando win in Game 4 — which becomes a lot more likely if Collins is injured and Zaza is suspended — instantly swings things back in their favor.
If the Hawks win Game 4, then they can say the Magic have their backs up against the wall. Even then, this team’s track record doesn’t invite much benefit of the doubt.

Najeh let’s not forget that if Zaza is suspended J-Rich will definitely be suspended, and after Dwight and Jameer he is possibly the biggest thorn in our side and their biggest shotmaker. With him out JJ will FEAST on the low block with a combination of Arenas/Reddick guarding him and they lose a bit of size with Richardson out.

Am I the only one who never wants to hear Jon Barry call a game for the rest of my life? He is so one sided that its crazy. He was constantly talking about the Hawks not being able to score, but they were winning the entire time. If the Hawks can’t score but still winning, doesn’t that mean the Hawks are playing SHUT DOWN defense? The Hawks defense has the Orlando Magic averaging less than 90 points a game. But Barry didn’t say anything about that. Also for majority of the 3rd quarter, the Magic were running a variation of a zone defense, yet he’s saying attack the basket. Uh, duh, the purpose of zone is to prevent any attacking and penetrating.
Also, for anyone who said Josh almost cost the game, yea that one jumper was dumb. But that was one play. Take away his 10 rebounds, and what do you have?

Answer: 15 points and a LOSS!
Not only do we lose this game with out Josh, our only Double-Double, but Josh is extremely important to this team. He is nearly UNTOUCHABLE! He pestered the hell out of Dwight on the help defense. Absolutely fantastic game from Josh! These people are idiots.
This was a TOTAL Team WIN – TOTALLY! Drew coached his AZZ off!
He did not duplicate the mistakes of Game 1 – The ENTIRE coaching staff was phenomenal tonight. From Tyrone, to Nick, to Bender to Connor to Sund to Gearon, JR …. To a Man!
The whole Fan Club – hell! Give All yourselves a Game Ball!
I haven’t been this excited since Dominque had a Shoot Out with Larry Bird and then Michael Jordan! The best play offs in 25 years people! These new kids, don’t really know how long it has been for this CITY! To WIN like this! Yall better recognize! The Magic do.
This makes last year Round 2 worth while!
Thank You Mr. Johnson for coming here to make us smile again, and Thank You for re-signing! You were spectacular tonight!

I just seen the highlights on NBA.com. Jason Richardson had no right to come over and do anything. Not only was there no altercation between Zaza and Dwight, but there was nothing to suggest that anything would happen.
And yea…funny how everyone keeps trying to be the bully on the Hawks. I’m glad we have Zaza and Collins. Just for that reason. There is no way in hell your gonna come onto OUR floor and try to disrespect OUR team on OUR own damn floor infront of OUR crowd. Gameball to Zaza for that. I did’nt even get a chance to watch the game. But give that ball to Zaza. I wish Zaza and Dwight got into it. I wish both got suspended. Zaza would be the MVP of game 4…and not even be there. LOL!

After listening to LD in the huddle last night, I’m now convinced that the players(JJ/JS) aren’t following instructions. If the players aren’t willing to listen to the hc, there’s nothing LD can do but bench their sorry behinds. We have a very good basketball team but certain players are holding them back.

Didn’t get to watch the game tonight but I read the whole blog to get the game story. Some thoughts:
“I like the wrinkle in the offense that seems to have been added since last game. When Joe passes out of the double team, a pick seems to be coming for the guy who catches the pass. Good wrinkle LD, the first good thing you have done this series.” – superior
Credit where credit is due… I’m with it. Good eye sup.
“LD telling the team doin timeout DON’T SETTLE FOR JUMP SHOTS! These guys don’t LISTEN TO LD!” – Ole Hawks Fan
Let’s not get carried away praising LD. If the Hawks lose this series, it will be because of what happened in game 2. LD has serious credibility issues with his players. Think about his comments about Teague after he lit up Portland. These players know he has different standards and rules for different players. If you want credibility, you have to treat people the same and not be a respector of persons.
“And if we had Bibby still, I think we are 0-3 in this series.” – SteveW
Co-sign. Kirk has had two good games out of three. Imagine Bibby chasing Jameer.
“Zaza is a fake tough guy. J Rich pushed him in his face and he did not do anything. He should have beat J Rich to the floor.” – Superior
Come on dude. Zaza head butted J-Rich in his face and all J-Rich could do was that little sissy slap? And then there were 5 guys between them. Rocky will stand toe to toe. J-Rich no Clubber Lang.
“Does that mean Dwight’s suspended the next game, given his techs during the year?” – niremetal
Techs are reset at the start of the playoffs. A player will be suspended for his 7th technical during the playoffs, and every 2nd tech thereafter.
“Do yall think he will be suspended by Stern?” – drmaryb
The Godfather is not pleased. Zaza and J-Rich both for one game I bet.
“i didnt see what started it, did anyone get a look at the “fight”?”
Zaza checked Howard at the waiste as he drove to the basket, but the swipe at the ball was clean… got a lot of leather. After Zaza knocked the ball out of his hands, Dwight hit Zaza in the jaw on his follow through of flailing his arms to get the foul call.
Zaza didn’t react to Howards hit and was walking away, motioning to the Hawks bench when J-Rich bumped him. Zaza will get suspended for head butting J-Rich even though J-Rich and Howard were both instigators.
“Drew may go down as the Best play off coach in Hawks history if, he takes us to the ECF!” – drmaryb
Co-sign! See doc, I’m not a hater. If Drew learns his lessons and still takes this series, he’s gotta get past Thibs to make ECF. Orlando Magic are a gutted team that can’t match the Hawks’ talent from top to bottom of the roster. Chicago is a complete team with the game’s best coach. I still think CHI is vulnerable because they don’t have as much playoff experience as the Hawks. But if we get past CHI I will sign on for bringing Drew back next year.
“With him out JJ will FEAST on the low block with a combination of Arenas/Reddick guarding him.” – Jae
Good call, hurts the Magic more than it hurts us. We can let Al take a turn guarding Dwight to replace Zaza’s minutes. Magic have no way to replace J-Rich.

The waiting begins – Zaza suspended or not for game 4? He’s Howard’s main antagonist right now and that’s not such a good thing: the league has a very obvious bias towards protecting its marquee names(exhibit a : how the hell does Howard get away with throwing so many elbows??) If Twin doesn’t heal up right quick, we’re going to be in real trouble on Sunday if Z is suspended a game. Closest to the truth is we really need them both…

All of us whined and complained about the way our regular season went, especially our won/loss and home record compared to the 2 previous yrs under Woodson. Well, all of a sudden we see why Sund and the ASG hired LDrew, and it was for the same reason they gave Woodson, except he failed.
At this stage of the teams progress and development, they wanted improved playoff performances and results over regular season performainces and results. We can focus on LDrew’s decision to take AHorford out after picking up 2 early 1st qtr fouls and not playing him again in the 1st half all we want.
But you can’t overlook the fact that he’s coached one hell of a series so far. He’s switched strategies and made adjustments in and during each gm, and Orlando doesn’t know what to expect or what to do, other than try to get physical and intimidating. In gm 1 he allowed Dwight to carry the OFF and DEF load and shut everyone else out, with the exception of JNelson in the 2nd half of gm one.
In gm 2, with officiating help, Orlando dominated us on both boards, lived at the FT line, and still struggled to win. In gm 3 he made adjustments that kept them off the boards, kept Dwight in check, and controlled the gm.
Not one, nada, of the changes and adjustments that LDrew has made so far would have even been a consideration by MWoodson. He would have continued his narrow minded approach of trying to stop DHoward with double or triple teams, with no changes or adjustments whatsoever. The Hawks will eventually lose a playoff series, we just don’t know when.
But nobody is going to embarrass this Hawk team in the playoffs, certainly not like last yr. With no draft pick this yr, with Jordan Crawford gone and no one to take Jamal Crawford’s place, I wonder if the team will reconsider resigning Jamal, especially with him having such an impact in the playoffs? THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY WE’D BE IN THE POSITION OF BEING UP 2-1 AGAINST ORLANDO IF MBIBBY WAS STILL HERE.

The NBA should look into the way our faces and heads have been consistantly used to foul Dwight’s elbows. The Hawks are goons for their obvious fouls on Dwight. Hail to Dwight. I resent people calling him a cry baby. Dwight has a right to throw his body and initiat all contact.

Like JEJE keeps saying nothing is coming easy for this team on offense and thats because they are not being coached up..The players dont trust the coach or themselves.Bigs that cant get layups consistently because they rather settle for jumpshots then bang inside…This is a guard dominated offense and when they are hitting their shots all is good but when they meet up with Chicago or Boston, those looks wont be there so those perimeter shots may stop falling and since there is very little inside presence attacking the rim,its gonna get real ugly…
Orlando is missing Matt Barnes, Vince, Pietrus, and Rashard, and Gortat big time!!!!!!! Matt would harass iso and hold him to under 10 per game….Guess their GM is on the hot seat you think??? If the Hawks could land a David West type player, they could possible contend for a ECF??

before you all rip me a new one, yes I believe JJ still makes too much. but that isn’t his fault. why would anyone turn down more money? but he is most definitely not the worst contract in the NBA. he is highly productive. and if we didn’t have JJ right now we would not be leading the Magic 2-1 in this series. I hope you JJ haters pay attention to how much defensive Orlando throws at JJ every time he touches the ball. then I want you to imagine anyone else on this team getting doubled and or tripled like that. they only person on this team that can handle that much defensive pressure is JJ.
what I am saying is that if we didn’t have JJ all the Magic would have to do is double JC and no one else would be able to score. but with JJ drawing the double teams and still scoring some, JC, and Kirk are either singled covered or open.
If we had one more person that you had to double JJ would look even better and could actually earn his contract.

lets keep it real???Okay??? The Magic are missing three 6′8″ guys on the perimeter to harass and shut down our guards, plus Lewis at 6′10″ harassing Josh..Point Blank……….That’s why the 3 previous years the Hawks lost 8 of 9 to Orlando…Now they are much shorter with their perimeter defense and that is a major flaw which our guards can now exploit….

I agree, let’s not get carried away with praising Drew. We should be up 3-0 right now. This is not a good Orlando team that we’re playing. They’re a shell of the team they were last year and we match up way better with them now than last year.
Having said that, Drew deserves considerable credit for his strategy of playing Dwight straight up and of discovering that Collins could be an effective defender against him. He also deserves credit for being able to draw up plays in time-outs that lead to easy baskets. Not so much in this series, but this season has proved that.
Now for the cricism. His player rotations are sometimes abysmal. In Game 1 he let Jamal get abused by Heinrich in the 3rd quarte to get them back in the game. His rotations in the first half of Game 2 have been called the worst coaching decision of the year by outside observers.
He inadequately prepared Jeff Teague for the playoffs, even though Teague’s shown flashes of absolute brilliance this season. Teague could be a force against Chicago if we advance and has the speed to stay with Rose, but he’s not had pt in forever and won’t be utilized. All these criticisms could also be leveled against Woodson.
Why did the Hawks win so many more games last year then? The Hawks offense was near the top of the league last year and this year it is in the lower tier. That is odd considering that Drew was supposed to be the offensive-minded coach and Woodson the defensive-minded coach. But the playoffs are about match-ups, and Woodson couldn’t solve the Dwight Howard riddle. Drew apparently has in playing him straight-up and clamping down on the shooters.

slim we arent living in the past, just you are. i wont count you wrong on what you are saying but dont blame the hawks for who they have to play, they just got to play ‘em as they lie, like in golf. btw, they did play and beat those guys early in the year and that may have been during what was it a 9 game losing streak with those same guys out on the court looking like trash? and isnt that when they then went to correct whatever the problem is? those guys you are giving so much cred to forgot how to pay like last year too and showed they couldnt beat the ordinary teams much less the new heat or there wouldnt have been wholesale changes. there was a reason for the change it didnt come out of thin air, the trades that is, as bad as they seem to be now. you are displacing last years memories for the reality of how they played together this year. r lewis disappeared this year after the trade as well as his roid body is beginning to fail him all the way to the bank. so why is he part of your discussion as he would have played any better than turk? dude you are in a cave or the dark ages as you go on and on.

This is absolutely correct. The regular season means nothing. The Hawks can be last year’s Celtics. They have the easiest possible path the ECF with a gutted Orlando team and an inexperienced CHI team standing between them and they don’t have to go through BOS or MIA.
If we make it to the second round, I will start to seriously evaluate Drew’s coaching. Right now the Hawks need to close out this series. If the Hawks lose the series it will all go back to game 2.
