Atlanta Hawks: Magic 88, Hawks 82

Orlando–The Magic pounded the Hawks on the boards and outscored them 29-11 from the free-throw line. That’s how they won while shooting 34 percent from the field and committing 16 turnovers.

  • The deficit on the boards is can be chalked up to Dwight beasting and Al playing only 26 minutes because of L.D.’s two-foul rule. The disparity in free throws is a Dwight production, too, because it’s become clear that Twin (and to a lesser extent, Zaza) is the only Hawks big with any hope of preventing him from shooting 100 percent in the post.
  • Despite all of that, the Hawks had a chance to win after I thought they looked beat down and done. They suddenly came alive for a 10-0 run: Smoove’s running hook shot, Al’s baseline drive, a J and floater by Joe floater and Al’s block leading to his dunk.
  • But then Turkoglu scored on a tough driving basket over Al and Al missed a challenged iso jumper. J-Rich shook free for a 3 and Al missed a 3-point try. “I think that towards the end we couldn’t get organized a couple times on the offensive end and forced me to take a couple tough shots that I usually don’t take,” Al said.
  • So that was the end of the rally. The Hawks headed back to Philips with the split.
  • “That’s all you can ask for,” Josh said. “If you can’t get two of them try to steal one. We’ve still got the home-court advantage. We’ve just got to be able to come in to a sellout crowd at Philips Arena, the Highlight Factory and try to use our fan advantage to win games.”
  • He looked into the camera when he said that last part about a sellout. It was a plea to fans.
  • The officiating was a mess with bodies banging all over the place, lots of rebounds and hard screens. The Magic cranked up their D but the Hawks thought they came out on the short end of calls.
  • “Some were fouls that wasn’t called,” Smoove said. “It is what it is. I think we handled the physicality well. I think we cranked up our defense as well. We have just got to make sure we box out next time because we played pretty good defense in the half court.”
  • The Magic didn’t wait to double team J.J. this time. An extra man came pretty much any time he got inside the 3-point line. Joe didn’t make good or quick decisions, dribbled headlong into traffic and pretty much stagnated the offense.
  • “He wasn’t a sharp as he was in Game 1,” L.D. said. “Clearly they were going to play him a lot more physical. I don’t think there was anything else about that. He is going to have to look at the film and see how they are playing him, do things quicker. He will bounce back.”
  • The Magic had to give up something while chasing Joe but Marvin missed the open jumpers that were available.
  • It’s not that Orlando’s role players hurt the Hawks: They were 18 of 66 from the field to Dwight’s 9 of 12. It’s just that they made timely shots after missing a bunch and played much better team defense in front of Dwight than in Game 1.
  • “Our guys’ effort tonight was above and beyond,” Stan Van Gundy said. “When you can shoot 34 percent in a playoff game and win it, I’ve got to be very proud of guys and just hope at some point guys will start making some shots.”
  • L.D. had some weird sub patterns tonight.
  • Josh Powell, not Zaza, was the first big off the bench when Al got two early fouls. Didn’t Powell already prove in Game 1 that he’s no match for Dwight? Hilton Armstrong got a turn against Dwight, too, and was ineffective.
  • Twin was solid against Dwight. He helped force three turnovers on Dwight’s first four post-ups but played only three minutes in the second quarter then didn’t play after an 8-minute stint in the third as Zaza got most of the minutes against Dwight.
  • “We got into a rhythm with Zaza out there,” Drew said. “I did not want to disrupt that. I thought Zaza did a really good job. We just couldn’t stop [Dwight].”
  • Al didn’t go back in after those two early fouls. The Magic wrecked the Hawks for 15 of their 16 first-half offensive boards with Al on the bench but somehow trailed just 48-42 at the half.
  • “The guys were playing well,” Al said. “It was just unfortunate that we are giving up offensive rebounds. That was the only thing that was a little frustrating. The defense was great. I think I finished up the game with two fouls. It’s kind of one of those things it is going to be up to [Drew]. I know he doesn’t want to risk it. We were fine today because we played good defense, we were only down six going into the half.”
  • L.D. said he had planned to put Al back in before halftime.
  • “When he came out, I told him to be prepared to go back in the second quarter,” Drew said. “My thought process behind that was if we were struggling, I was going to play him. But we actually played very well in that second quarter and it wasn’t until late in the second quarter when we hit the bump in the road. At that point I didn’t want to put him in and jeopardize him getting his third foul with less than three minutes to go.”
  • Al on sitting for that long: “It is tough. I was out of rhythm by the time I came in the second half. It took me a while to get going. It’s one of those things. The team player well but we missed some shots.”
  • Dwight played all 48 minutes and finished with five fouls.
  • Hinrich was sharp at the start and then just seemed to fade offensively. He’s one of the guys who had his space cut off by Orlando’s more aggressive D. “Maybe they had a little bit more sense of urgency tonight,” Hinrich said. “But it seemed like at times we got a little bogged down tonight offensively. In Game 1 we were just moving that ball.”
  • Al said he banged his right knee with a teammate’s knee in the second half but stayed in the game. He had ice on ot for the swelling after the game.
  • Jamal was the only guard who had it going offensively (though got in on the high-degree-of-difficulty shooting to do it). L.D. stuck with him late until the Hawks needed some D. He went back to Hinrich and later subbed Jamal for Zaza.
  • “Jamal was playing well and making shots,” Drew said. “There came a point where we needed to get some spots so I came back with Hinrich, and then came back with Jamal for [Zaza]. I was getting a feel who is going good and what do we need at that time.”
  • The Hawks left Orlando with a W, a loss in a near-comeback and home-court advantage. It feels a lot different from last year, when they headed back to Atlanta with two listless Ls and no hope of winning the series.
  • “It’s a different team,” Al said. “I’ve been trying to tell you guys. It is not the same team as you saw last year. I know they are different but we are different. We’re confident.”

northcyde,

From last night’s blog:

“Al is a 4th year player and played 4 years in college. He knows how to play through foul trouble. ”

Al left Florida after his Junior year.

Gee, I can’t believe that the self proclaimed “King of Blog Research” missed this one. ;-)

I WONDER WHAT A REAL NBA COACH CAN ACOMPLISH WITH THIS HAWKS……
IS THERE SOMEONE WHO CAN COACH LARRY DREW?
I PROPOSE NAJEH BUT JUST BEACUSE I THINK SLIMJR WOULD KILL LD……..ALONG WITH DAVID STERN……..
I AGREE WITH SLIMJR MY COUNTRYMAN AL NEEDS TO WORK ON HIS INSIDE GAME (MAYBE WITH HAKEEM OLAJUWON?)AND ALSO AGREE WITH NAJEH, AL HAS TO BE MORE AGRESSIVE AND PUT THE BALL ON THE FLOOR AND USE HIS QUICKNESS AND SIZE TO GET POINTS CLOSE TO THE RIM……

I think one of the reasons why the Hawks lost is that the tempo of the game was always the magic’s tempo. As a blogger pointed out, Doc Rivers spent countless hours developing his star point guard Rajon Rondo and the Hawks should have done the same with Teague. If the Hawks are not going to play Teague they should trade him than just watch him sit and see his youth dissipate. Teague is fresh, has a lot of speed, is probably the quickest player in the game and somehow we cant seem to utilize his abilities. Most of the time ive noticed that the stupid Hawks will take the ball out of bounds and put it in the hands of Josh Smith to watch Smith dribble down the court like a guard a subsequently turn the ball over. THE HAWKS SHOULD BE PUTTING THE BALL IN THE HANDS OF TEAGUE AND ALLOWING TEAGUE TO DRIBBLE THE BALL DOWNCOURT. JOSH SMITH did that again last night and he’s turned the ball over in every game that Ive watched. Look if coach Drew is afraid to tell Josh to stop doing that than I’ll tell him now—STOP DRIBBLING THE BALL DOWNCOURT LIKE YOU ARE A GUARD AND TURNING THE BALL OVER. IT IS COSTING US WINNING A TON OF BALLGAMES! The second thing the Hawks need to do is guard Dwight Howard from making layups underneath the basketball and instead SEND HIM TO THE FREE THROW LINE. HOWARD WILL MISS PLENTY OF FREE THROWS AND GIVE THE HAWKS A CHANCE TO WIN BALLGAMES.

THAT WAS THE GAME.

I always believed LD would cost the Hawks one game in the playoffs and that was it….Thank God, it was game 2 and we got the split.

Postives

Magic. 32%FG and 88pts and they got all the calls. They needed 36ft attemps and 29 makes to get 88pts. 33% of their points came from the line, that won’t happen in ATL. LD won’t make that mistake again

ENOUGH with you damn Teague lovers. He has NO ROLE in this series. If we were playing CHI, sure you can put him on Rose’s backup. If we were playing Indy, sure you can put him on AJ Price.

My proposal:

DEACTIVATE DAMIEN AND TEAGUE AND ACTIVATE THOMAS AND MAGNUM. WE NEED AS MANY BIGS AS POSSIBLE. DAMIEN AND TEAGUE WIL NOT PLAY IN THIS SERIES

FIRE LD. YOU SUCK AS A COACH. LAST NIGHT WE COULD’VE GONE UP 2-0. INSTEAD, YOU SUBJECT US TO YOUR BS OFFENSE, WHICH YOU CLAIMS IS UNPREDICTABLE. THAT WAS ONE OF THE WORST 2ND HALF OFFENSIVE EXECUTIONS I’VE EVER SEEN. GUYS RUNNING INTO THE LANE AND THROWING THE BALL AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE

YOU ALL SAW WHAT THIS TEAM REALLY IS LAST NIGHT – A JUMPSHOOTING TEAM.

WE HAVE TO DEPEND ON JAMAL’S CROSSOVERS AND 20 FOOTERS IN ORDER TO WIN GAMES. THERE IS NO INSIDE PRESENCE. SMOOVE IS THE ONLY GUY ON THIS TEAM EXECUTING INSIDE. TOO BAD HE INEXPLICABLY DIDN’T PLAY A LONG PERIOD OF TIME

Double Zero Eight,

I don’t disagree that LD was outcoached, but I am trying to make the point that Drew made an unforced error. In taking Horford out he was not reacting to SVG. He was just being stupid. Actually, it was not the fact that he took Horford out. Rather, it was that he left him out for the WHOLE QUARTER!!!

And then he compounded that error by putting in Armstrong and Powell.

In my mind he is still compounding it by not recognizing that he did anything wrong. This means that he will do it again. So now SVG knows that all he has to do is run people at Al to get two fouls on him in the first quater. Also, and this will hurt us most, AL WILL KNOW THAT HE WILL GET PULLED UNTIL HALFTIME IF HE GETS TO FOULS. DO YOU THINK IT WILL CAUSE HIM TO PLAY MORE PASSIVELY?

MARVIN CAN’T EVEN EXPLOIT A MATCHUP VS PLAYERS 4 INCHES SHORTER THAN HIM. PUT ANTHONY JOHNSON ON HIM AND HE PROBABLY WILL GET STUFFED AND HURT HIS BACK

This was just an ugly game from two mediocre teams. Orlando is nowhere near the team they were last year and LD don’t know his as_ from a whole in the ground. This two foul BS is pretty evident. We should have won this game. How do you sit arguably your best player with only 2 fouls while the other team is making a run in a playoff game. You don’t need a formula to figure that out. To all the Jamal Crawford and Josh Smith haters:

The playoffs are are when above average players should shine. It’s only 2 games in, but Josh and Jamal have more than held their own, Jamal is shooting over 50% from 3, and is FG% is way up. Makes me think that Jamal knows how to get his money. Josh Smith’s FG% is up and he is pretty much right at his season averages. Our two “All Stars” the ones who should be carrying us are having mixed results. Joe was great game one, but then reverted to the slow, hogging the ball, tricky dribbling Joe that we have seen all year yesterday. The great Al Horford (who can do no wrong), numbers are down across the board, partly because of LD. His FG% is way down, and his lack of any low post game is really hurting us. Marvin (If he got more shots, he would be great) Williams is non-existent in the playoffs, as he has been for his whole career. We have to have our “ALL STAR” players, and the great veteran with the highest “Basketball IQ” Kirk Hinrich, play with consistency in order for us to be successful in the playoffs.

WHY THE HAWKS LOST
1. REFS obviously didn’t call DWIGHT HOWARD for many fouls. AND YOU KNOW WHAT!? They called A BUNCH OF FOULS on HOWARD in the 4th quarter when it didn’t matter as much and wouldn’t take him out of the game, JUST TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE they were doing their jobs right. Howard had at least 10 fouls the whole night without exaggerating. They didn’t call any early, or else it would’ve hurt the Magic’s chances of winning. The REFS HAD AN AGENDA!!
2. LARRY DREW CAN’T MAKE GOOD ROTATION DECISIONS!!! I was watching this with my dad, HAwks were up 8, and I said, “WE GOT THIS”. THEN, that retard Drew put in Josh Powell in and then Hilton FREAKING Armstrong in against Howard for a LOoOoong time, and Horford sat for a LOOOONG time!! AND GUESS WHAT!?!?!?!? The Magic erased the 10 point lead, and got a 6 point lead! FREAKIN’ GAAHHHH!! A 1st grader could’ve made better subs! Put in Etan Thomas’ big self against Howard and insert Horford earlier.
3. Hawks should’ve won easily, the Magic looked awful for the most part again, and we were working them. Then after the horrible 2nd quarter, we gave them momentum and they played us even the rest of the way. IF WE HAVE A FREAKING 10 POINT LEAD IN THE PLAYOFFS, WE NEED TO GET A 20 POINT LEAD, NOT SIT OUR STARTERS AND WAIT FOR THE MAGIC TO MAKE A COMEBACK!!! Idiocracy at it’s high level. I’M SO MAD, I HATE LARRY DREW!! I’ll give him credit, good game plan, but GOD AWFUL substitutions.

4. REBOUNDS

But if a team outrebounds you by THAT MUCH and only wins by 6, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY BETTER!!! We have this series, assuming the refs don’t screw us too hard, and the Hawks can execute on offense.

The +/- with Jamal is decieving, because he was in during the 2nd quarter comeback. Jamal played GREAT for us, don’t hate on him. Hinrich played great in the first half, but his shot was a little off in the 2nd half, and the Magic D was on. HE’S OBVIOUSLY DOING MUCH BETTER THAN BIBBY WOULD’VE BEEN DOING THOUGH. Hinrich’s doing great and I’m glad we made the trade. But PLAY JEFF TEAGUE!! We could use some quick points and penetration! GO HAWKS!!

“PUT EARL BOYKINS WITH A TORN ACL ON MARVIN AND HE PROBABLY WILL PROBABLY AIRBALL A LAYUP AND GET INJURED”

Haaaaa!!! It really is sad that a guy with his size and length is so horrible. I don’t think he could score consistently in the post over Spud Webb.

Also, Joe and Horford have the exact same problem. They both take way to long to mke up their minds how to attack the defense. All that jab stepping and faking, and they go nowhere. All that jumpshooting in the regular season is great, but you have to be able to make quick decisive moves, and get to the free throw line or score in the playoffs. Both guys need to step up and play like All Stars.

Kirk is not consistent enough offensively to be a Lead Gaurd. I could see if he has a niche like teague and rondo (slashing to the basket) but he’s not a slasher and his jumper is very inconsistent.

If this were westbrook, rose,Deron William, Chris Paul, Chauncey, even Jameer theres no way they have a horrible game like that without making an impact. He’s a backup.

Although Horford sitting on the bench was the major reason for the 2nd quarter comeback, it is not coincidental or deceiving that Jamal was in for the 2nd quarter comeback. Typically he was THE REASON for the 2nd quarter comeback throughout the regular season.

As someone pointed out earlier when the Hawks had their 10 point lead, instead of resting their starters and allowing Orlando to comeback and take a 6 point lead, the Hawks should have put their collective foots on the throats of the Magic and increased their lead to 20 points. Its much harder to comeback from a 20 point lead as opposed to a 10. As bad as the magic were shooting, the Hawks should have won the game by 50 points. Its so upsetting to watch the Hawks lose to an inferior opponent that they could have put away by halftime. Now that the Hawks have lost their confidence, I’m expecting the Hawks to lose the next 2 games at home and lose the series at Amway Arena in game 5. The Hawks stink. LD stinks.

Is anyone out there thinking the DH was licking his chops when big man Hilton Armstrong came in the game? All he did was play behind Howard and push on him…no way he was going to be effective. JeJe, there is no place for Hilton, Magnum P.I. or any other stiff we have brought in here. I thought we were going to let Dwight get his points? Well, can someone concentrate on boxing him out more? At least get a foul for trying…

The fouls on Al? He’s guarding Anderson/Bass; how much trouble can you get into? They have the thinnest frontline in the playoffs that I can remember…perhaps thinner than the Hornets.

Marvin Williams – 2 beefs:
1) That fallaway to the left jumper he has from 20 feet. That is just sad at this stage in his career. His play has relegated him to under 20min/game.
2) When the offense is on the other side of the court, can he not flash or keep his defender guessing instead of sitting on the 3pt line? It is just so predictable, its frustrating. When are we going to put pressure on the defense to defend? Marvin allows the Magic to play him at a distance because they dare him to shoot an open jumper!

You can deactivate him…not many will complain.

We should be up 2-0….but the more time LD has to make decisions, the not-so-good we will be.

Hey, I didn’t even mention our backup PG.

refs were horrible! hawks foul shooting was horrible! our box out ability is non existent! who ever is supposed to guard howard shouldn’t even worry about the ball after it’s shot. he just needs to find howard and get his butt into his body and let someone else on the hawks get the ball. do not allow howard the rebound.

how does horford have two fouls in less than two minutes and howard, a guy that fouls multiple times a possession have five fouls for the entire game? the refs that were there last night shouldn’t be allowed to ref again in this years playoffs. they were plain crap…they tee up josh for a slight argument over one of their bad calls, yet howard does the same thing and much more every time they call a foul on him. which isn’t much–and at the end of the game instead of trying to figure out how many fouls crawford had–why didn’t they try to add up all the fouls that howard committed that weren’t called.

drew you are going to have to voice your complaints to the refs–if you don’t say anything than don’t expect to get any thing…van gundy complained after game one and ditto the magic got every call and more last night.
