Atlanta Hawks at Magic Game 2: Dwight Defense and jump shots Part II?

Orlando–Some stats types are dismissive of the Hawks’ Game 1 victory because of the way Hurricane Dwight scattered them and also because of all of those long jump shots they made.

Example: Mike Prada of SBNation.

Apparently, it is possible for an NBA team to allow a player to score 46 points and be universally praised for it. Dwight Howard ran all over the Atlanta Hawks’ single-coverage, but because nobody else on his team decided to do much of anything, the Hawks came away with a Game 1 victory on the road. Howard and Jameer Nelson scored 73 points; everyone else on the Magic scored 20. Howard and Nelson shot 26-41; everyone else shot 8-34. It was a brilliant strategy by the Hawks to make sure that their horrible teammates had horrible games. Let’s praise them for it!

Snark aside, the bottom line is this. Playing Howard straight-up and taking away the three-point shooters is a strategy. Allowing Howard to score 46 points and hope his teammates shoot 8-34 is not. Luckily, the Hawks shot nearly 50 percent from 16-23 feet and made it work. That doesn’t mean it’s a sustainable long-term strategy, but whenever writers are given the chance to question Howard’s worth as a player for being just the 11th player since 1985 to score 45 or more points in a playoff game and lose, they’ll take it.

I like the snark, especially in service of going against the grain to knock down memes. But Prada’s take is pretty cynical. “Nobody else on the team decided to do much of anything” makes it sound as if the Hawks gave Dwight’s teammates lots of opportunities and they just didn’t take them. Similarly “hope his teammates shoot 8-34″ could instead be construed as “try to make sure they do.” Isn’t that the whole point of staying home on them?

And I hope no one is questioning Howard’s worth as a player based on Game 1 (or based on much of anything, really). Heck, if I’m the Magic, I don’t worry about getting anybody else involved if Dwight is hammering the Hawks again. Why give more chances to players who are not going to be as efficient? If Dwight has another monster game, the Magic could simply cut down on their turnovers, get more stops (which Stan Van Gundy acknowledges won’t be easy because of the match ups) and win. If so, the Dwight Defense will have been conquered.

Game 1 is not an indictment of Howard’s worth as a player. Instead, as Rob Mahoney noted at ProBasketballTalk: “This series could stand as an exercise [in] the limits of superstardom, as even a game-changing force like Howard is left a spectator to the shortcomings of his own teammates.”

It’s true the Hawks made a lot of long 2s but put that in the context that they made them at a higher percentage than any team during the regular season. It’s a tad dismissive to chalk it up those Game 1 jumpers to luck when the Hawks have more skilled jump shooters than most teams (and when the Magic don’t have the defenders to consistently challenge those shots). And much to my surprise the Hawks, thanks to J.J., were more than just a jump-shooting team in Game 1.

Van Gundy is a stats guy and also outspoken, so I thought he would shrug off Atlanta’s ability to make the most inefficient shots in basketball over the long run. But he didn’t do so.

“They are efficient with it,” Van Gundy said. “A lot of people don’t know that Al Horford, outside of 10 or 12 feet, he is the highest-percentage shooter in the league. That includes guards and guys like Nowitzki. Now he doesn’t stretch it out to three but he can make those shots. . . . They have a lot of guys who shoot the ball very well from that range. If we can get them down below what they normally do then I think we have a hell of a chance.”

Sounds like Van Gundy isn’t only hoping the Hawks miss those shots but believes the Magic actually have to do something to stop them.

Notes

  • Unlike yesterday, Josh didn’t have ice on his sore elbow prior to shootaround. “It feels better,” he said. “Two days [rest] did good. It feels all right. I still feel [pain] a little bit but I am pretty sure I won’t feel it tonight.” Josh said he would probably wear a padded sleeve tonight.
  • L.D. said he didn’t expect Josh’s injury to limit him much: “When he’s not scoring he has the ability to impact the game. The one thing I’ve talked to him in this series is zeroing in on Turkoglu and not allow him to get into a rhythm. I really believe with the elbow hurt he can still impact the game.”
  • Drew on adjustments for Game 2: “We are going to start the game as we did the last game. I am not going to panic with adjustments until we start getting hurt with things. Sometimes I think the tendency is to start making adjustments when there is no need to. I am not going to do anything out of the ordinary. If you have to make adjustments, do it but not if you don’t have to.”
  • Drew on how the Hawks will react of the Magic run them off jump shots: “If the drive allows us to get to the basket, we will get to the basket. If it allows us to play a mid range game, we will play with that. We are going to allow our instincts to take over. We are not going to predetermine what we are going to do offensively. The one thing we can’t do is shy away from getting to the basket, irregardless of who is down there. We recognize Dwight being a defensive presence in the low block and near the basket but I don’t think that should shy away from getting to the basket.”
  • J.J. on Orlando’s plan to disrupt him more in Game 2: “I’m going to just pick my spots like I did in Game 1. Not be too aggressive, but at the same time be aggressive enough to where I am making plays. We will see. I am sure they are going to come a lot quicker, especially with the double teams. We will see how everything works out.”
  • Josh on expecting the Magic to play with more intensity: “We have to control the tempo of the game because with them having the fans on their side it is going to be pretty hard to win the game. So we have to stay even-keeled when they make a run, don’t get discouraged and fight back and make a run of our own.”
  • Joe on the team’s mindset: “Like I said before Game 1, I think we are all ready and prepared in here. We are all confident and we believe in one another.”
  • AJC wise guy Jeff Schultz weighs in on Van Gundy and Dwight’s takes on Twin’s tactics.

is it ok to say he’s a dolt? i thought it was common sense that one was a result of the other.

The league doesn’t want the Hawks to win this series. If they send out Steve Javy’s crew tonight, you know what’s up.

the postseason of the NFL and NBA is one in the same. whoever has the best defense/ running game=points in the paint trumps the passing game=16-23 foot jumpers and 3’s. The jumpers and 3s can win a series but to contend for a TITLE you must be able to score inside and shoot free throws. The hawks can get by orl or mayb even chi with jumpers and decent d, but we can not score in the paint or get to the line like bos/mia/la/dal can.

I’ve been saying it since day 1 of the damn season. Atlanta is a better team than Orlando and the season series and game 1 so far has proven it. The trades the magic did was probably the worse big trades they could have done.

Our inside game was none existent in this game.

Al and Josh needs to have a bigger presence inside the rest of the series.

I swear….no one wants to give the Hawks any props. That a$$hole writer must be forgetting that the Magic play 4 guys who can’t guard anyone on the floor. Good luck with the Redick/Johnson matchup, d-bag!

I’m starting to think that no team respects the Hawks. Dwight Howard said he hates losing to the Hawks, but watch him on the video prior to saying that. He pauses and says “you know what I mean…” I took that as his way of saying “It’s the HAWKS, c’mon!”

I think this attitude is why you see teams like the Celtics, Knicks get so aggressive and want to bow up towards Hawks players. They think they are better. I’ve not seen A’mere try and be alpha male against any other team. But, play the Hawks and he is suddenly the toughest guy in the league.

Just a lack of respect. These teams think they are so much better….Magic is just another. Is going to be great sending these a$$holes home for the summer.

Can they make jumpshots all night again i dont kno but it was nice 2 see them drive 2 the basket a lil bit more instead of settling for a long shot .. The magic will come out more harder & intense on defense 2nite and maybe play a lil to aggressive . But on the other hand maybe that can open lanes to the basket only prob is Dwight is gonna be there .. If the shots are open then they will take them no doubt about that.. Maybe a lil elbow soreness will keep smoove from takin long jumpshots anyways..lol….LD dont make 2 many adjusments as long as what works then lets just keep it…

He coasts. I watch. I’ve seen him not go after balls, walk up and down the floor, and settle for jacking jumpers he can’t make.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at dragging Horford into the conversation. Considering he is known around the league as a talented, scrappy player, I think you are really, really reaching.

But….whatever….You’re never going to change my mind on this. The conversation will just be like a dog chasing its tail. So, we might as well drop it. I know what I see.

We gotta have a must-win urgency tonight. We cannot be lackadasical with the belief that we stole homecourt. Let’s win tonight then win at home at Philips and get ready for Chicago, who hopefully will have a long intense series with the surprising Indiana Pacers (Vogel is a solid coach)

“I’m starting to think that no team respects the Hawks.”

We fans watch this team for 82 games every season, and most of us don’t respect them either, at least not to the extent that would have allowed us to predict a playoff series win. I don’t blame the national media for hating on the Hawks when they looked so lackluster for the last three months of the regular season and against every quality opponent. But part of the fun is that they can erase all that with a strong postseason, and they are off to a good start.

game 2 will be very tough to win. i thought the hawks could win game one now if they could somehow still a win tonight–this serious would be very hard for the magic to gain control. i’ll be honest– i think the magic win in an easy fashion tonight. trust me i hope i’m so wrong and will be rooting for the hawks with my three sons. it’s the playoffs–you just never know. one more in orlando should give us enough cushion to take the series.

If the Hawks manage to pull off the victory tonight, it really puts them in the driver’s seat in this series. It would take a monumental choke job to lose this series if they go up 2-0 winning both on the road.

Easier said than done, though. I think the Magic are going to make every effort to shut Joe down and force him to make quick decisions out of the double team, and although Joe did a great job of being aggressive in Game 1, his season long track record says that he probably isn’t going to keep that up for every game in the playoffs. If the Hawks win tonight I think it will be a grind it out game in the lower 80s. I’d be really surprised to see them approach 50% shooting again tonight.

Rod from College Park

Section 303,

Ok. Now that I know what you mean, again you can believe anything you want, but what you believe is fantasy. This years stats:

J. Smith – 2,644 min, 657 reb, 99 steals, 120 blocks, 255 ast, 1,274 pts
A. Horford – 2,703 min, 718 reb, 59 steals, 80 blks, 266 ast, 1,178 pts

So he does not go after balls, and is not scrappier than Horford, but he leads the team in steals, he walks up and down the floor, but he leads the team in blocks, and is second in rebounds. He settles for jackin jumpers that he can’t hit, but shot a higher percentage from 3 than Joe, and Marvin, and is only one percentage point behind Jamal. He shot 47% from the field which is better than Carmelo, Durant, and Granger while playing a lot of the 3 position. All this while playing on a bad knee for about a third of the season, but you say he coast because you have season tickets. Again , I ask you this, if Josh coast, what do Marvin, Joe, Horford, Bibby, and Jamal do? They all play similar minutes, so why don’t they put up similar numbers? Horford was brought into by Northcyde, and I agree with him.

Northcyde,

“It’s hard to criticize Josh Smith’s effort out on the court. Even if he does coast at times, he also plays as hard as anyone on the team at times. It just seems kind of strange to criticize him on his effort, when he’s the guy most likely to make hustle and energy plays.

If Josh coasts, what does Horford do?”

@Geemack: “MC What’s the plan when the jump shots are not falling?”

in Game 1 it was scoring in the mid range and getting to the free-throe line, with J.J. the main guy doing both. there wasn’t a Plan B for much of the season so it will be interesting if the Hawks can find ways to score other than Js if they must do so.

the hawks plan b revolves around posting josh and al. both have mismatches down low and so they need to take advantage of them when given the opportunity.

Rod the fact that Josh puts up those numbers is the issue that I think most have with . Although I dont get why numbers especially fg position means anything in this situation .

I the the proper question would be : What role does Josh need to fulfill for the hawks to be successful and does he devote all his passion and energy towards fulfilling that role 100% of the time ? I think the same could be asked of Al .

I will say though that I think both of then have been shell shocked this season . They scored a few points last year and thought they were ready to carry the team but I dont think either one realized how hard it is and how much was expected of them.

I think Josh coasts sometimes. But to put it in context, if you watch any NBA player closely enough, you will see that they coast too (with MJ, Kobe, maybe KG etc being the exceptions). Its the way of the NBA. Very few players go all out every game, so I wont hold it against Josh. I just think he needs to pick his spots a little better on defense.

Najeh,

Was it TMac who won the first 2 games of a playoff series on the road, and then said “it feels good to go to the second round”? Of course, they lost the series.

If Hawks go up 2-0, the Magic will have a hard time winning 4 out of 5 (since the Hawks won 4 out of 5 from them this year). But given the consistent inconsistencies of the Hawks, I wouldnt be surprised.

I hope the Hawks dont relax later just because they are guaranteed at least a split. The game is there for the taking. Let’s take it tonight.

i don’t think anybody is expecting josh to drink 10 bulls and run around like his pants are on fire for 48 minutes. there’s a difference though between those who make an effort to run back and those that don’t even try at times. it’s those that put forth that extra effort to go after loose balls, to help out on a defender and run back…. i’m talking about putting forth effort in things that don’t show up in that stat sheet. that’s where josh is lacking. any coach can see it. that’s why the guy is yet to be an all star. hubie brown always points out josh’s lack of effort. it’s plain as day folks. now when he’s motivated we can see his potential. but it’s more of tease than anything else.

I think a lot of the sentiment towards Smoove comes from a) unrealistically high expectations as compared to his actual ability, and b) the fact that when he screws up it looks a lot worse than when other players on the team screw up.

First of all, there is a large contingent of Hawks fans who for some reason believe that just because he can jump out of the gym Smoove should be producing at the same or close to the same level as LeBron. Some people seem to think that anyone can develop ball skills and only athleticism is something that is inborn. But LeBron, Kobe, T-Mac, etc. had far superior shooting and ball handling skills to Smoove even as rookies. To his credit, Smoove has developed a lot of his ball skills from the abysmal level they were at in 2004 to at least a league average level now, but even after seven years of steady improvement he is nowhere close to where those players are, and it’s mainly because he was nowhere near their level from the start.

Secondly, the casual fan sees Smoove shooting jumpers and groans because it’s obvious that his jumper is one of the weaker aspects of his game, but they don’t notice (or care) that Al passing up wide open shots or Joe taking five seconds to pass out of a double team hurt the offense just as badly. Combine that with the whiny face he makes when he complains to the refs and it rubs people the wrong way.

I’m the kind of guy who cares about production. If a guy is helping the team win, he can whine and complain all he wants and I don’t give a sh-t. I realize this probably puts me in the minority. As for his effort, I don’t have season tickets and I go to about 5-10 Hawks games a year, so maybe my opinion on the subject is less valid than people who are there every day (although it’s not like TV gives you a whole lot less than what you can see from the 300 level). But from my vantage point Smoove plays about as hard as anyone else on the team — which is to say that when things are going well he plays hard, and when they are not he doesn’t. I don’t think this makes him very different from anyone else on the team, Al included. In an 82 game season, players do coast from time to time.

The one stat that is for the most part the result of effort is rebounding, and Smoove and Al have identical defensive rebounding rates this year. Al’s offensive rebounding rate is higher than Smoove’s, which presumably is due at least in part to him not having to play small forward for stretches at a time.

What is the TV situation for this game? Since it is on NBA Tv, is the only other option to find a link online?

No that is not why he is yet to be an all star. His is yet to be an all star because of the log jam of better scoring forwards in the east, as compared to Al being voted in as a center. Al would never have been an All Star as a power forward either. He is not better than Boozer, Bosh, Amare, Garnett, Pierce, or Lebron. Honest Abe, you are not being honest. If he does not put forth the extra effort to go after loose balls, then why has he led the team in steals the last two years? Does he possess some kind of magnet that makes the ball come to him? If he does not help out then how has he amassed over 1100 blocks in 7 years. There are a number of 6′8/6′9 guys in the league, why don’t they all have those numbers. If Josh does not put forth extra effort, please tell me who on this team does?

As I was very adamant about signing Shaq last year to help shore-up our weakness in the paint, in hindsight however, I’m so glad we didn’t.

Instead of seeking a new deal after Cleveland, he should’ve join AARP. Boston is getting rip-off.

Worldwide, wow! That’s a statement. You do have a 1 game advantage at this point.
I see Orlando coming back and evening things out tonight. As much as it would be nice for the ATL to celebrate, even if we go up 3-0, there is still the doubt that will be here, including from me.

I would like to see them keep the Magic guessing instead of waiting for ORL to make adjustments. But it will be rare to see DH get another 46.
He is going to try and force his teammates to play better to help him. More passing, less shots at the rim. Keep him away from putbacks, and keep him at the foul line. Hack-a-Howard all day, every day.

Josh as the 3 is not the greatest decision, but as long as he doesn’t sling up 4-5 jumpers, we should be okay.

And LD, play JT tonight!

rod keep convincing yourself of whatever it is you’re trying to prove.

lebron and amare were voted in by fans. kg who only averaged a mere 10 points this year still got voted in by coaches. so there goes your bunk scoring argument. this begs the question why did kg get voted in ahead of josh? or over boozer for that matter? is it just based on respect for what kg has done in the past or is he still considered a better player? if you had the option to take any one of those three for a game which one would you take? josh had a high scoring avg, blocks more shot per game, avg more assists, rebound and steals about the same rate and yet he doesn’t get the nod over kg? that doesn’t make you scratch your head as to the reason why?

talk numbers all you want. shareef abdur rahim put up big numbers. big dog put up a lot of points. basketball skills can’t be defined solely by numbers. josh smith has three big flaws, he’s immature, lackadaisical, and he still doesn’t know or he ignores what it is he does best. which is to be a high energy guy, slasher, rebounder, defender. focus on those things and he’d be a perennial all star, and the hawks would be a much more consistent bunch.

I have been a basher of Smoove’s mojo for years. I believed he was a lazy and possessed an extremely low Bball IQ. This year, JSmoove is making waves in his progression as a basketball player, and not simply an athlete playing bball. He has extended his range, which requires WORK. We should be toasting Josh for dropping his Block Shot average from the previous years, listening to the VETS (Twin), coming to the realization that position Defense is more important than your individual Block Shot Line. And while were at this, how much of our perceived “laziness”, came from having the worst defensive point guard in the game, leading the defensive point of attack? The Hinrich effect is not fully integrated.

honest abe,

You never answered the questions. If Josh does not hustle or give effort who on this team does? It’s a simple question. All the other nonsense you posted is irrelevant. If you don’t know what I’m trying to prove, then don’t jump in the conversation that I was having with another blogger. All those things that you think Josh should do are your opinions, and you have your right to them, but saying he is lazy, and does not hustle is not a fair and accurate statement. If you think Al Horford would have gotten voted into the All star game at the forward position, then we really don’t need to continue blogging to each other because you are delusional.

Powell is giving it his all on D, but he’s just not big enough or long enough to make a real impact against Dwight. He isn’t big enough to stop Dwight from getting deep post position nor is he tall enough to contest his shots from that close.

I don’t agree with Drew’s foul management strategy here. Al can play a maximum of only 26 minutes in this game now, as a result of him essentially being benched for the entire first half. As a result, the Hawks have lost the lead and given the Magic the lead. That was pure stupidity. Even if Al would have played and picked up a third foul before the half, he’d very likely be able to play more than 26 total minutes for the game if he was in foul trouble. Now, we’ve lost valuable minutes from him. Stupid move by Drew. Really poor coaching so far by him.

It would have worked if the Hawks didn’t collapse in those last two minutes. If Van Gundy was the Hawks head coach, he’d probably have our guys playing to their strengths, and he’d be crunching stats to determine what works and what doesn’t. Also, he’d never be dumb enough to sit Horford for an entire half in a game like this. On the other side, Drew would probably have Jameer and Hedo hogging the ball the way JJ and Jamal do, and he’d have Dwight spotting up for bank shots, meanwhile, JJ Reddick would be running backup point guard for the Magic. The games probably wouldn’t even be close, unless Dwight got every single rebound and kept converting or getting fouled on put-backs.

Collins’ inability to rebound is becoming a major liability in this game. And it’s made worse because Orlando isn’t running every possession through Howard, which is enabling him to be freed up for offensive rebounding opportunities. Even when the Magic miss, Howard is right there without much resistance.

Honestly, we need Zaza to come in and really work the boards. Otherwise, we may lose this. One rebound for Collins in 18 minutes . . while Howard has 13 rebounds ( 7 offensive )

I know the Hawks have cut the lead down to 4, but I kinda get the feeling watching this game that the Hawks’ chance to retake control of this game just passed. In Game 1, and for most of the first half of this game, the Magic were missing shots because the Hawks were contesting them. In this quarter, they have been missing uncontested shots too. JJ 0 – 3 . 3 turnovers in the 2nd half.

As for Drew . . you just have to wonder if this game turns out different had he brought Horford back in sometime in that 2nd quarter. We were up 5 at the time he called the quick timeout to try to slow down the mini Orlando run. It was 7 minutes to go in the quarter. Had he brought Horford in at that time, maybe we hold onto the lead or even stretch it out.

Instead, the Magic go on a 19 – 8 run to close the half, and we’re down 6.

I know you’re a rookie coach Drew, but you have to do better than that. NO WAY can you leave even a 2 foul Horford on the bench for that long of a time, with how weak our frontline is.

Yeah, Zaza has done an admirable job on Dwight after giving up those two easy shots to him early in the quarter.

With that said, Collins still gives the Hawks the best chance to draw the 6th foul on Dwight and he also has the length to contest those post ups better than Zaza. I’d still feel more comfortable right now with him in.

As is the case a lot of the time when people get on Smoove for taking bad shots, it wasn’t Al’s fault he had to take that bad shot as much as it was the fault of the team as a whole for not executing the initial play properly and forcing him into a situation where he had to take that shot.

Also, it makes it even worse when you think about the fact that his production could have really tipped the balance in a close game like this. In basically one half of play, he has a double-double and 2 rejections. If he had been in the game in that first half, who knows what would have happen. We might have lost, but we also might have won.

Al Horford’s fade away jumper was a result of J.Smith not getting the ball to JJ who was coming off the curl. I won’t fault Josh for it, because had Joe’s man played the passing lane and intercepted the pass, we would’ve been all over Josh.

I’m not as bummed about that Horford 3. He took it. I really thought it would go in when he took it. It didn’t go in.

We played terribly offensively throughout the 2nd half. We were hoping one spurt could get us back to ATL 2-0. I’m not gonna fault Horford or anybody else for a play here or a play there. Truth is, the guys didn’t have it collectively tonight.

I’m not exactly known for being an optimist. But this game did validate the idea that the Hawks have a blueprint to beat this team. It was a bad loss that easily could have been a win if Joe had been more aggressive and if LD had substituted more intelligently (although my gripe is not the same as most of yours). But all that being said, the Hawks held the Magic to 35% shooting and forced 16 turnovers against 9 assists. The Magic again shot horribly from 3. If the Hawks keep defending like this, I am confident they can at least stretch this series to 7 games, if not win the series outright.

Drew needs to keep someone in front of Nelson that can actually stay in front of the dude *all the time*.

Nelson’s dribble penetration is the only thing that opens up looks for the rest of those Magic players. Without his dribble penetration, those other guys aren’t seeing those looks.

We play Dwight straight up, and keep someone that can stay in front of Nelson.

But what really lost us this game tonight was our offense. The offense that looked so good in game one looked indecisive and out of rhythm all night tonight. Wonder what Drew will look to adjust, if anything, going into game 3.

Not only that, but how many points did we lose the game by? 6. In a game that was this close, Al really may have been the difference between a win and a loss. This may be true, but how confident can you really be when Drew is the one calling the shots on the sidelines. With the Hawks having to play so well to beat the Magic, even the slightest mistake could entirely ruin the game for them. Drew made a dumb decision to take Horford out the game and that may have been the difference between the win and the loss that we could have controlled. Sure, there are other factors which led to our loss, but just having Horford in might have allowed us to win. How do we know that Drew won’t do something equally stupid in the next game and ruin our chances of winning again?

I have confidence in our players and know that they are capable of beating the Magic, but I have very little confidence in our coach. It’s tough to win when your coach puts you at a disadvantage. Drew does that a lot.

No one could make a shot. For some reason, I’m wanting to point to the 3-wide open 3’s that Hinrich missed as key moments…..Hinrich sucked tonight. And, yes, so did Al. So did Joe.

Josh Smith (yes, I said it!), Jamal, Zaza my team MVP’s.

If the series is going to be officiated like this the rest of the way, Hawks have no shot. They let Howard get away with murder out there. I did not even have a problem with Josh Smith getting the T. Someone had to say something. Larry Drew certainly was not going to.

Section 303,

You really think Al sucked in this game? He played 2 minutes in the first half, which means he was out of rhythym for the second half.

But he still finished the game with 10 pts, 10 rebs, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks and 2 turnovers. He did go 4-11, but he was 4-9 before those last 2 shots at the end.

I dont think he sucked.

I completely agree with that assesmet! Kirk also had some costly turnovers because he wasn’t aware of his surroundings. He also Didn’t hit JJ for the wide open trey and instead got bottled up as the FT line by an Orlando double team.

O’Brien, I did. Granted, I don’t understand why he was not put into the game later in the first half after picking up the two fouls. That contributed to him being rusty. Saying that, he took some bad shots. Off the top of my head, I remember two instances where he held the ball for at least 7-8 seconds and then threw up a terrible shot.

He got it going a bit. He started hitting that shot at the top of the key. But, overall, he was not himself. Too many missed FT’s, too.

I did not realize his final numbers looked like that, But, I still don’t think he played well.

As good as Smoove was on D and as under control as he played on O, I thought he could have crashed the boards better particularly in the first half. 6 boards in 34 minutes is not enough for him. Collins doesn’t grab boards but he does box out. Someone has to swoop in and grab those boards and keep them away from the Magic, like Al did in the second half. Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson each had 4 offensive boards, and while a lot of them came against the Hawks’ bench scrubs, several of them came at times when Smoove could have prevented it.

I believe the Hawks out-rebounded the Magic in the second half, with Al playing the entire time. He didn’t have his offensive game going, passing up shots he should have taken and bricking shots he usually makes, but he made a huge difference on the boards.

I am anxious to hear from Larry Drew these next two days. He has to make comments on the officiating. You just can’t sit there and take that. No point in playing the rest of these games if Dwight Howard has a free pass to throw elbows and set screens like an O-lineman.

I have to give Zaza a lot of credit tonight. He seems to get under Howard’s skin even more than Twin does.

Rusty . you didn’t say anything after Game 1 because you couldn’t. You’d look like a complete idiot if you did.

One thing about it though Crusty . . if JJ doesn’t play well in this series, we don’t beat the Magic. So I hope you’re not secretly rooting against the dude, just so you can rag on him. I’m not the biggest Jamal Crawford fan in the world, but I will give him props when he plays well.

Too many of you guys just come off as haters. Whether it be toward JJ, or Smith, or Al, or whomever. If those guys play bad, it’s fine to rip them. But if they play well, I would expect that you would be cheering those guys on, not be silent and run and hide.

Act like a fan of the team, not of players. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that we win the damn game, regardless of who pulls us though. It’ll just be easier if our main scorer gets his 20 ppg + 5 assists every night.

If LD makes any comments about the officiating, he will probably get fined. And considering he is already the lowest paid coach in the league…he might not want to make that payment.

But I do think the refs were horrible. Its almost like they wanted to make sure Dwight won this game so that the series is tied 1-1.

And I think LD should say something. but its not his style. How many Techs has he received all year?

And we lost this game because the Magic killed us on the offensive boards. And because our leading rebounder sat the bench for 22 minutes in the 1st half, you have to place a chunk of the blame on the coach tonight, sad to say.

He just can’t do that. Al is a 4th year player and played 4 years in college. He knows how to play through foul trouble. At some point, Drew has to trust his captain to play smart basketball, plus play hard.

And seeing that Al also is one of our main offensive weapons, that benching was a catastrophic move on his part. Regardless if we were winning the game or not, you have to put him back in to see if we can stretch that lead out.

Then NBA office said refs(we) missed a call in the game one of the Denver/OKC game at crunch time by not calling an obvious offensive interference on OKC and the basket should not have counted..I dont have proof but lets just say my gut is telling me they did not make a mistake by not making the call with 3 sets of refs eyes on the ball at the rim?????

northcyde,

One thing I was surprised about. As good as Jamal looked on O (8-17 from the field for 25 pts), he was still -10 for the game (the worst rating off all Hawks players).

Another question I have for LD, is if JJ is struggling with his shot, why not play Jamal at SG and let Teague play PG (especially in the 3rd when the Hawks scored 12 pts)?

JJ played 43 minutes tonight. 43. He did have 5 rebs and 7 assists, but he went 6-15 from the field, and had 5 turnovers.

From Jeff Schultz’ blog;

The bigger issue was losing Al Horford. He drew two fouls in the first two minutes and Drew made the curious decision — as he has all season — to sit Horford out for the remainder of the half.

When Horford got back into game in the second half, he looked out of rhythm and didn’t hit his first bucket until the fourth. The Hawks were outrebounded 52-39. Orlando had 20 offensive boards — most of those when Horford was on the bench.

“I got taken out of the game quick in the first half — I feel like that affected us,” Horford said. “They had 16 offensive rebounds in the first half. That’s something I have to be more conscious about. I was out of rhythm. It took me a while to get going. The team played well but we just missed some shots.”.

You would think LD would have learned to trust Horford by now. How mnay games has al fouled out of all year (or for his career)?

And in section J paragraph 15 of the NBA rule book, it states “Moving screens are illegal and result in a foul on the player setting the moving screen (unless you are Dwight Howard).”

Also, let me direct your attention to section B paragraph 6 of said book, “dribbling, taking a hop step, then three more steps, shall be called traveling, and result in the offending player relinquishing the ball to the other team (unless you are Dwight Howard).”

Does anybody remember this VOW by LD? Fans? Management? Anyone? Why is LD not being reamed a knew A@@ho)! for this display of jump-shooting? Why” Why? Why?

If a person misrepresents themselves — you cut them loose! You don’t wait. They lied to you. Lieing is not acceptable and cannot be tolerated because of some imagined “continuity issue.”

If your ole man or ole lady cheats you — you kick their ass out NOW? You don’t go to counciling, wait to “pass go” or “collect $200.” You kick’em the hell out RIGHT NOW! As soon a you find out.

This jacking-up jump-shots bullS-*#) — is supposed to be LD’s effort to improve our PLAYOFF PERFORMANCE ?

I’ve never seen such an humiliating display of patheticism (jumpers) and cowardness by an entire NBA team in my 42 years of watching the NBA! This game was actually winnable.
