Rod from College Park, Josh coasts. He does. I’m at almost every home game. He coasts. That’s why he jacked bad shots and walked up the floor so often. He was coasting. Really, I don’t see any other way of putting it. If your looking for inspirational effort, don’t look in the direction of Josh Smith.

Insert whatever excuse you want…..he coasts.

You’re talking about Steelers safety Ryan Clark. And I agree with his take on Dwight. He doesn’t have that “killer” type personality that you need out on the court, when you’re the leader of a great team. And that’s what separates a lot of the stars, from the superstars. And the superstars from the legends.

Lebron lacks that “killer”. So does JJ. So does Dirk, although Dirk may be closer to having it than Lebron.

Meanwhile, Wade, Pierce and Garnett have it. I think Derrick Rose has it ( with the way he dealt with Danny Granger’s comments and with his play down the stretch of those two games ). Kevin Durant is looking like he may have it. Kobe and Chris Paul DEFINITELY have it.

When those guys are out on the court, they don’t mess or joke around. They’re strictly business and want to take the heart right out of you.

You can tell that Dwight doesn’t have it, because he gets frustrated too easily and commits too many silly fouls. He’s physically tough, but he’s not mentally tough.

It’s hard to criticize Josh Smith’s effort out on the court. Even if he does coast at times, he also plays as hard as anyone on the team at times. It just seems kind of strange to criticize him on his effort, when he’s the guy most likely to make hustle and energy plays.

If Josh coasts, what does Horford do?

Former Rocket and Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Mike Woodson mentioned as a frontrunner to replace Rick Adelman. Woodson still owns a home in the Houston metro area. Most of the sports chattering class seem to respect the job Woodson did in Atlanta, notwithstanding playoff blowouts. Strange how good a Mike Woodson can look to a franchise that has only won one playoff series in 14 years.

Yao Ming isn’t Shaq, and he certainly is not Oden. He is a player that would make this Hawks team better. He is also a player who isn’t going to play 40 minutes/games so a suitable backup would be required. Ming is a natural center and one of the top 5 at that position. He can, and will, pass the ball. He has an inside and mid-range game as well.

It is fair to say bringing Yao in would be a gamble, but to talk about him as if he was broken down or unproven is wrong. He has had plenty of time to heal now and will be an All Star once again. While I doubt he would want to come to Atlanta, the Hawks should at least try and do whatever it would take to convince him to come play for them.

Of course if Yao did join the Hawks, that would mean some current players would have to go, and that might be what some really don’t like. I love the Hawks, but I’m not going to pretend that their performance in Game 1 somehow erased their underperformance during the regular season including sub .500 against winning teams. Yao’s level of play is consistent even when facing the top teams in the West.

Everyone in the NBA coasts, with the exception of Kobe. I was a season ticket holder for 5 years prior to this year, and I can tell you with a straight face, that no one of the Hawks team plays with more energy and effort than Josh. As northcyde said, if Josh coast, then what does Horford do? remember Horford in that Bulls game we came back from 17 down, and won? Since that game, when have you seen that type of energy and effort from Horford. Every player in the NBA coast, with the exception of maybe Kobe. Josh just pisses you off because you see him arguing with refs. Does Dwight coast? Watch this series closely, and you will see Dwight arguing with refs the same way Josh does, which is why he led the league in tech’s. You are confusing being an emotional player with giving effort. Many of the greatest player I have ever seen, Jordan, Iverson, Shaq, Howard….. complain and whine during the games also. I would prefer those type players than players like Joe who never say anything. Josh has mybe missed no more than 20 games in his whole career. A guy who coast, would not suit up every day. But hey, if you want to believe that, then thats your opinion, but it’s not a fact.
