Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 103, Magic 93
11:57 pm April 16, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Orlando– We already knew the Hawks can defend the Magic but it’s possible they won’t be able to score like this through the entire series.
- The Hawks made 13 of 27 shots from 16 to 23 feet. That’s a high percentage even for a team that made them at a better clip than anyone other than the Mavs during the regular season.
- But, thanks in large part to J.J, the Hawks also had an effective Plan B (11 of 19 from 3 to 15 feet) and Plan C (21 of 29 free-throw attempts). That provides some evidence that the Hawks might be able to score when those long Js stop falling if they can make it a point to go to those other plans.
- “The primary problem is we couldn’t guard them at all,” Stan Van Gundy said.
- And, Xs and Os aside, the most important development might have been that the Hawks finally stood up to the Magic in a postseason game. That’s worth a lot for a team that was embarrassed in last year’s second round and staggered into the playoffs on a six-game losing streak.
- “People were a little frustrated with us because of those last six games but, for us, we didn’t even think about it,” Jamal said. “Last year’s series was last year’s series; we didn’t think about that, either. We feel confident going into the playoffs. We got one down, one more to go here.”
- “We are here to win,” Twin said. “We are not here to get a free T-shirt and head home or anything like that. We accomplished the fist step. We got the win tonight, and Part 2 is on Tuesday night.”
- Suddenly the questions about Atlanta’s state of mind have shifted to the Magic, who lost in their sparkling new arena to a team they thumped from the playoffs last spring.
- “It’s frustrating that we lost but it’s the first game,” Dwight said. “We’ll come back in the second game with a better effort.”
- The Magic can’t ask for anything more from Dwight. He was magnificent while scoring 46 points on 23 shots and grabbing 19 rebounds. But other than a 20-point eruption from Jameer in the third quarter, the Magic couldn’t find points from other sources.
- “Offensively we have to get better, move the ball, whatever,” Jameer said. “I don’t know. I really can’t put a finger on it right now.”
- The Hawks for the most part stayed straight up on Dwight even after he thrashed them for 31 points in the first half.
- “We came in at halftime and we knew that one player was not going to beat us,” Collins said. “Dwight can go out there and have 60 points. As long as we have 61, we will take that.”
- Twin and Zaza were in foul trouble early and the Hawks sent a parade of little-used big men at Dwight. He overpowered all of them more easily than he did Twin, who made entry passes tough enough that Dwight was called for lane violations three times.
- “He got in his head a little bit,” Josh said. “Even though Dwight had an explosive game I think he did a pretty good job on him, especially in that second half.”
- The Hawks kept Orlando off the 3-point line. Hinrich controlled Jameer on pick-and-rolls. That was pretty much all it took to slow Magic players who weren’t Dwight.
- “He was scoring but the other guys weren’t getting as many touches,” L.D. said. “That was just a decision I made to stay with that particular coverage. I did not want to open up any type of opportunities with their 3-point shooters.”
- J.J., Jamal and Hinrich outplayed Orlando’s group of Jameer, Arenas, J-Rich and Redick. “To be honest with you, their guards killed us,” Redick said.
- J.J. carried over the edge he showed from those final four games into Game 1. “I wanted to attack early and just try to make the game easier,” Joe said. “I was getting in there and making plays for myself and my teammates and it worked out.”
- Joe took it to J-Rich and Redick, shot over Dwight’s help D and generally made good decisions passing out of double teams. “When he does get the ball we know Dwight is coming over to double-team him,” L.D. said. “He just has to put himself in a position where he can score just a little bit faster.”
- “He has to keep that up,” Smoove said. “He’s our offensive leader as well as Jamal. What I always stress to him is make quick moves. That’s what he’s been doing.”
- Joe played 45 minutes. “I thought he got a little bit tired at the end,” Drew said. “I told him I was going to ride him all the way until the end. He’s our go-to guy.”
- Jamal was lax on getting around screens and containing Arenas on the dribble. But he more than offset that with 23 points on 14 shots, including 5 of 6 free throws, and delivered some daggers after halftime.
- Maybe Hinrich was just saving it for the playoffs. No longer was it a pick-and-roll horror show for the Hawks against the Magic.
- “He’s getting over screens. He’s fighting, picking up the point guard full court and turning him in the half court,” Josh said. “He’s doing a good job.”
- Kirk also was making his shots and had five rebounds.
- “His energy was really high,” Drew said. “His shot was looking good. I could see the confidence when he shot a couple of them in the first half.”
- Josh recovered from a poor start. He ended up taking eight of his 14 shots from closer than 15 feet. He kept his head in the game after some early foul trouble.
- “A couple of cheap fouls,” he said. “I stayed with it for the full 48 and I was able to show some production and help out a little bit in that third quarter.”
- The Hawks have a plan to beat the Magic. Now the test is sticking to it or improving it after Orlando goes back to the drawing board.
- “I am sure like us they are going to see what they can do better but it doesn’t matter for us,” Zaza said. “We know individually what we can do. If we play together for 48 minutes I think we should be in good shape. We are going to have a chance to win the series if we play just like today. Together, help each other defensively, share the ball. It was beautiful to watch our team.”

I thought most of what they did today is sustainable for the rest of the series. As long as Joe is in attack mode the Hawks can get good looks, and they did a good job mixing it up offensively and getting other people (notably Al) involved so that the defense couldn’t just key in on Joe every possession. The defensive strategy worked really well again.
The one thing I don’t see repeating itself necessarily is that level of efficiency from Jamal, who hit a lot of tough shots that he has missed in recent weeks. If he is playing this efficiently, I don’t mind him playing extended minutes, although I’d prefer they didn’t come at point guard — even in this one, LD had to switch Joe onto Jameer Nelson in the 3rd quarter after Nelson started torching Jamal, and that probably contributed to Joe being tired by the end of the game. If his shot is off, though, I hope LD has the sense to play Kirk or Teague instead of him.

It was the off the dribble shotmaking from our guards that made the difference offensively. And Horford got hot in the 2nd quarter at just the right time.
This is how JJ has to play. Just look to get your points, and opportunities will open up for him to make plays for others. A highly efficient, superstar like game from JJ tonight. On both ends of the floor.
And Jamal played like the 6th Man of the Year that he was last year. Props to Hinrich as well, knocking down shots and playing very good defense.
60 hours of tranquility for the blog starts . . . NOW.

The Hawks surprised the league today but not the Hawks players. They believed in themselves and they knew what they were capable of. Todays win over Orlando is why we paid Joe johnson the money we gave him in the offseason. Joe proved again that he is a money player. The magic are one-dimensional and dont have the horses to keep up with the Hawks. The Hawks should win this series in just four quick games. Winning this series will be sweet revenge for last years debacle. Hawks in 4.

Good team effort. We played em tough and big. The size of our guards and our quickness out to their shooters negated Howards points. Good game plan. Big difference in this team and the one with Vince Carter that trounced us last year. Better matchups for us.

Hawks looked great tonight. Hinrich looked very good against Jameer and everybody pretty much stayed home. I think last years Magic team would have put up a better effort on defense.
J-rich, Turkoglu, and Agent Zero are not known for their defense either. Defensively the Magic stunk tonight and if they continue to play defense like that they are in trouble.
Enjoyed watching the Hawks play team ball tonight. Joe looked like himself and Jamal played within himself also.
I hope the Hawks win, but I wonder if this is fool’s gold with L.D.

No doubt Orlando misses a creator/shotmaker like Vince. Hopefully Arenas won’t have a flashback to 2004. JJ continues to render Jason Richardson null and void. That’s their 2nd leading scorer.

Tonight’s game exposed their biggest offensive weakness. The Hawks played Dwight Howard straight up and stayed home on the Magic’s perimeter players. Obviously, anyone who watches basketball knows that is the defensive game plan of choice against the Magic. The Hawks wanted Dwight to take all the team’s shots.

I want to make it known that my stance has not changed. LD is still a horrible coach, Sund is still a horrible GM, the ASG is still a horrible ownership group. Kirk Hinrich is still a backwards move because what you people fail to realize is that we made it to the 2nd round last year and that Orlando had a much better team last year. The team they had last year had just went to the finals the year before. We may come out of the East and my views would not change, because as I have stated we can beat Orlando, Chicago, and Boston in a series. I am not like you guys I see the Big Picture and it says we are not winning anything worth nothing until we get a real coach, real starting C, a long term answer at the PG position and just a better deeper bench and finally a ownership group that wants to win a championship regardless the cost.
Now, on the Big Picture positive side. Jamal, Kirk, Marvin, and maybe even Zaza can improve there trade values during this playoff run.

The question is can the Hawks shoot like they did tonight for 4 games? They won’t shoot like that every night, but they can for 4 games. And, they’re going to continue to get good looks because the Magic play 4 players who can’t guard anyone (Redick, Arenas, Bass, Turk). Hawks will be able to get points when they need to.
Gotta get greedy on Tuesday. Get the 2nd win then. Everyone is talking about the Magic responding to this game, but I think how the Hawks respond is far more interesting. Can they handle the success? Will they be willing to brawl like they where tonight? This team may be maddening, but no one can say they aren’t interesting.

Jamal came into the playoffs shooting 48% from the field and 38% from three
hes been shooting the ball well but everyones been so been busy slamming the entire team while jerking off Teague that they simply havent noticed
As I said earlier there was nothing wrong with jamal or Joes game other than the fact that we decided to reduce there roles offensively and then when everyone noticed that the Josh and Smoove as #1 options experiment was failing everyone started in on why Joe and Jamals productions.
Jamal gave us 18 ppg on 14 shots per game .last year but the only month he ever got that many opportunities this year was in January. Its no coincidence that he gave us 18 ppg on 14 shots per game on 44% shooting just like last year
Tonight 23 points on 14 shots in 31 minutes pretty much what we saw all the time from his last year .
Next game
I would not be surprised to see Ryan Anderson start next game considering how ineffective Bass was

Fools Gold is what I would worry about-The Hawks shouldn’t expect those jump shots to drop at the same level moving forward. I would focus on tweaking our defense: there were moments we took the foot off the pedal with the JC show. Yes, he helps us score, but the longer he stays on as we noticed, the more likely that we are subjected to less ball movement and defensive breakdowns.
I liked what AL and Josh did in the paint, if they can keep that up, we can see more good things happening. But, I would hate for us to enter the next game with the same strategy we used tonight because they will be ready for us, and more than ,likely our defense will also have to step up. Our team is really competitive when the score is in the (78-84)

Jumpshots? That’s all you guys are focusing on?
- How about JJ looking like a legit superstar tonight, by scoring 25 pts – 5 rebs – 5 assts and probably most important, staying in attack mode to the point that he shot 8 free throws?
- How about the fact that we forced the Magic into 18 turnovers?
- How about the fact that despite the jumpshots, this team shot 27 free throws?
This team did a lot of really good things tonight, despite the jumpshots. Even if we’d shot less than 40% from mid/long range, we were doing enough things well enough to still win the game.
The only thing is if the guards do miss, our bigs need to be in position to gobble up some offensive rebounds.
News flash for you guys. We can’t win this series without JJ and Jamal playing good basketball. And because both are jumpshooters, those are the types of shots that they have to take . . and make.
The guards did what they had to do this game. And I hope they continue to do this in the series. That’s where we have the advantage at, not on the frontline. Horford and Smith will continue to do their thing, but it’s the guards who are going to have to win this series for us.

c’mon;
normally your rants are more lucid than the last.
You are probably correct, in that I am not interpreting the stats
which you so dutifully provided, the way you intended or the way you wish.
I’m not real good at ‘rithmatic but 17 points is 17 points.
Which is what Joe gives up according to your stats.
*(when guarding the [2 or 3] pos)
Only 9 players in the league at the [2 or 3] pos. avg 17 or more points.
So, he gives up more than the league avg.
You admitted to Sautee that he takes plays off.
You called Battier & Artest specialists [paraphrase]
do they have the luxary of taking plays off
if their job is to lock-down the other team’s best player ?
You talk about guarding three pos. yet he gets toasted when guarding the [1].
Another thing, those stats, do they tell us exactly who he’s guarding ?
OKC does he guard Durant ?
He defends the [2] & sometimes the [3].
How about Golden State, does he guard Ellis or whomever ?
Does he always take the lesser of two evils ?
Did he lock-down J.R. Smith in the 4th qtr -vs- Denver ?
(the nite Smith hit 15 3’s in a row) [slight exaggeration]
You said he took plays off so he couls be a lock-down defender in the 4th ?

“We can’t win this series without JJ and Jamal playing good basketball. And because both are jumpshooters, those are the types of shots that they have to take . . and make.”
Unless you consider floaters to be jump shots, Joe isn’t a jump shooter. Tonight he did exactly what he should always do. 6 of his 9 makes were inside 15 feet and five of those were in the paint. When he’s driving and hitting floaters, putting pressure on the defense to step up and finding open teammates when the defense commits an extra man, he’s at his best.

Great win. We got the Magic down and kept them down. We passed the ball, for the most part and drove to the rim even after getting a few shots blocked. We played smart ball defending Dwight by not trying to limit his points but by stopping everyone else. This was a good, solid defensively played game and I am proud of the unselfish way the guys played throughout most of the game.
I am concerned that from the middle of the 4th quarter on, Jamal was given the ball and acted as point. When that happens he does not distribute the ball like he should. Too often he tried to fight through double teams when he should have passed the ball. I saw Kirk holding up his hands on the wings and Jamal ignoring him and then jacking up a jumpshot. Jamal pass the ball. Otherwise, as I said, great win.

Jamal was lax on getting around screens and containing Arenas on the dribble. – MC
We’re talking about Arenas who is slower than Bibby. JC1 has to stay hot because if he is not giving us more offense than he’s giving up on defense.
Northcyde is right, JJ played like a superstar. I’ve said that everything that’s wrong with the Hawks can be overcome through heart and effort. No question we have the talent to beat Orlando. Jameer’s second round comment is the best thing that could have happened for the Hawks.

Superior, I agree Sund and LD are still horrible. I’ve already said if the Hawks win this series it will be in spite of, not because of LD’s coaching. It will be because our superior talent decided to play with heart and pride.
Want to know who is worse than Sund? Otis Smith. I laughed when I read that he thought DH should feel obligated to re sign after all the money they have spent on complimentary players. He’s looking like Danny Ferry in Cleveland… It will be his fault when Dwight leaves because he didn’t spend money on the RIGHT players.
The KH trade will forever be judged by this playoff run. If he continues to play well and we are competitive in the second round against Chicago, the hottest team in the NBA, Sund will be vindicated.

Kirk Hinrich was great on both ends of the floor. But what about time when he is on the bench and Jamal guarding Nelson if we slow him in that period of the game good things will hapend. We need to comedown once again this is just start.Great game guys dont forget we need 3 games like this one!!!!

Great win, but here are my concerns:
The Hawks played lose and moved the ball well, but only until Orlando began to threaten. For the last 7 minutes of the 4th quarter, they started freezing up and reverting to their old ways – Joe dribbling for 15 seconds at a time, guys staring down their intended pass recipient (I am gonna pass it, you’re not open but I am gonna pass it, I am gonna pass it, I’m gonna pass it, here it is) as if there are no other options, and then getting really low percentage shots with the clock winding down. They had a big enough lead to hold the Magic off this time, but the closer the game, the more they revert to this poor playing style. I have no confidence they will win tight games.

OMG ! They are actually proving us wrong so far. Did they really show up to play last night? Heck i didnt even watch the game figured i had better things to do. There’s 6 games left and we’ll see what kinda momentum that game carries for the Hawks.
If the Hawks win again in Game #2 then Orlando will start taking Atlanta serious and play much harder. They’re not gonna give them (Atlanta) anything……. they’ll have to work for it.
I know Atlanta won 3 of 4 during the regular season but you’ll have to forgive me for saying that the Hawks arent gonna be taken seriously unless they beat Orlando and advance.
Game #2 will be harder for the Hawks because Orlando isnt gonna let the Hawks go up 2 games on them and be embarrased because last year they destroyed us per game avg. of 20 pts. So now Atlanta you’ve got Orlando’s attention and you may have woken up the beast.
If you win game #2 Orlando will have to win 4 out of 5 games to pull this out and i hope that Atlanta gets hot during these playoffs and buries Orlando with a sweep or wins it in 5. Im not counting out Orlando but if Orlando comes back in Game #2 and blows out the Hawks then it’ll show me that Atlanta won because Orlando already in their minds was going to kill the Hawks in 5 games and advance to the next round.
Can Atlanta do it? Can they keep it up? What team will show up in Game #2. Atlanta win Game #2 and show the doubters like me, it wasnt a fluke cause i wanna be proved wrong.

Happy that the Hawks showed up and played a strong game. I think game two will tell us a lot – ORL will make adjustments and will come in with a chip on their shoulders.
It will also be interesting to see if LD will live and die with Jamal backing up at PG and leave Teague to rot on the bench. ‘Cause we’ve all been to that movie a few times and have seen the outcome.

Good Job Hawks, but a couple of things………
LD has to manage the game better-we almost let them back in the game with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter. He ran Joe and Al into the ground. Both played the 99% of the 2nd half. Also, Etan Thomas sucks. Hilton Armstrong has more size to help defend Dwight.
On another note, at some point in this series it may be worth trying a big lineup-Joe, Marvin, Smoove, Al, Zaza/Twin/x. This would create more matchup problems for the Magic then they’d know what to do with. Joe at the point means Jameer has to defend him, or Marvin, and we will win that everytime. Just a thought.

I tried to read The Orlando Sentinel sports page, but technical difficultiesd prevailed. Here’s what I gathered:
Dwight Howard’s Superman and Jameer Nelson’s Mighty Mouse try to find Magic against The Hawks
__________________
When GM Otis Smith was asked, why he think Magic has a shot at a NBA title? He turned numerologist and said,
“Well, we still have #12 and we still have #14.”
______________________
First of all, shouldn’t that be Superman II? (see Shaq).
Second, shouldn’t that be Mighty Mouse II? (see Damon Stoudamire).
They need to find their own identities, that’s like a troll on a blog jacking better blogger ID’s (see TS). Also, yes … They do have #12, but for how long? The reason #12 is so frustrated is because their HC and him have a serious personality clash. One is too intense and the other can’t handle intensity without being frustrated. Yeah, 49 pts and 19 rebounds is nice, but that will not off-set a lack of TEAM play. Jameer did score 27 pts, but he only had 1 assist. Shouldn’t an elite PG facilitate plays for all 5 teammates? 2 on 5 will not work for any title contender. The Hawks shared the ball and the shot distribution was extremely balanced with Joe taking 15 shots, Jamal had 14, Josh had 13, Al had 12 and Kirk had 10, 11 looks. No one stopped The Hawks who came in like a tsunami wave.
Of The Magic 18 turnovers? Dwight had 8. We got to the FT line whenever we wanted. If we stay pat another year, we can lure Dwight in 2012. Otis Smith and Dwight are rifting as reported, Otis told Dwight he has to control and temper his frustration by not attacking the refs and crying about “hack-a-Shaq” hard fouls. If you want to call your self Superman, then you should expect teams to put you on the FT Line.
You got to put on that cape and be Super! – Not complain.
When your shoulder look like The Golden Gate Bridge, then you’ve got to expect someone to try to put a pipe b o m b under your azz and blow your azz up.
The real problem in Orlando is: they shipped off, Pietrus, Matt Barnes, Gortat, Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter for lesser talent – pound for pound. They self imploded much like Boston did with trading Perkins.
They all panicked, while The Hawks stood by and watched in disbelief.
The Magic have nothing now, while The Hawks have consistency, familiarity, cohesiveness and team chemistry. The Hawks just look comfortable like the Spurs always do.

Round 1!
Calm down “antsy – pants”! Just Stop it! – with all this nonsense about Chicago and Round 2 BS. Jameer made that foolish mistake by telling DRose he will see them in Round 2 before the ball was a week away from being tipped in Round 1.
Why look past your opponent at hand in Round 1, as convincing as it was to win game 1 on the road, it is still a best 4 of 7 series. Remeber, The Braves up 4 on The Yankees in a failed World Series. It is called a series because unlike the Sweet Sixteen and in The NFL, this is NOT a
one-and-done play off format.
You have to play all these games one at a time! The same irrational “Debbie-Downers” on this silly blog are the same ones who predicted we would get swept and didn’t stand a chance. Boy, what a difference a game makes for all the emotional people on here!
So, just pipe down and pray no one gets injured or melt down.
Stay focused on the next game, don’t be like the foolish man who looks past the opponent in front of you. The Magic, as lost as they are, are not going to just lay down like we have done the past two years.
That’s why they play the game(s)!

look i’ll be the first to criticize ld. but lets give credit when its due. he stole a page right out of phil jackson’s playbook. he made dwight expend as much energy as possible in the first half. put all kinds of scrubs on him to hack and send him to the line. the magic aren’t at their best when dwight is taking 90% of the shots. the rest of the team was out of synch and the hawks were able to capitalize on it for at least one game. saving collins and zaza for the 2nd half proved effective as well.
the key will be how the hawks respond to the magic’s adjustment in game 2. most likely they will do more pick and roll like you saw in the 2nd half to get jameer going early. instead of going down low exclusively to dwight i think they’ll focus more on trying to penetrate and kick out to their shooters.
hawks played well but like i said prior to the series this win has more to do with orlando’s decline than it does about the hawks improvement. the magic took at least 5 steps back with those mid season trades. nice

Yeah Grandad. The problem is that you just don’t understand the stat.
You keep harping on the 17 ppg that JJ gives up to the opposing SG, and comparing that to an actual ppg average. But I think I pointed out at the very beginning of this discussion, that this stat is based on a per 48-minute basis. So JJ is giving up 17.1 pts per 48 minutes.
So now I’ll go back to those list of SGs, and only rank them according to the points per-48 minutes that they give up. I haven’t looked at this yet from a points per-48 basis, but JJ ranked 3rd in eFG% that he gives up . . and he would’ve ranked 3rd in PER, had I sorted it like that. So when I do the points per-48 minutes, I’m assuming he’ll rank somewhere around 3rd on that stat as well.
Stevenson: 15.2
Johnson: 17.1
R. Allen: 17.7
Meeks: 17.9
Ginobli: 18.5
Wade: 18.8
George: 18.9
Richardson: 19.2
Brewer: 19.3
Belinelli: 19.4
Sefolosha: 19.5
Bryant: 20.0
T. Allen: 20.1
Fields: 20.5
Matthews: 21.0
Aflfalo: 23.5
Is JJ going to shut down the opposing SG every game? Of course not. This is the NBA. And just about all of these players are talented enough to have an above average game at any given time. But for the most part, he limits whomever he’s going up against below their average. The dude is NOT a mediocre defender.
And the difference between star players and role players like Battier, is that Battier is not looked upon to produce 20 ppg every night. Star players are. So this is why role players like Battier can concentrate almost fully on defense, while providing timely offense. Battier is not looked upon to produce even 15 ppg. His worth is to limit what the other SF does.
Star offensive players have to concentrate on offense and defense. And they may fluctuate between what area they want to concentrate on at any given time. But if they’re looked upon to provide that offense, they may have to exert more energy in that area, than on defense. A guy like Kobe defends well, but even he can get a break in that area, because he has guys like Ron Artest and Matt Barnes ( another defensive specialist ), who can step up and guard a main scorer.
But when it’s time to shut somebody down, Kobe can then guard that guy, and put forth maximum effort on defense.
But as far as the stat goes, I don’t know if I can explain it any better than how I explained it. But I may do the SFs, along with JJ AND BATTIER, just to see how JJ stacks up against them.

@ drmaryb . . no doubt on your 10:53 am post
Carter, Pietrus, and Barnes were especially bothersome for us. Carter was the tough shotmaker. Pietrus seemingly made every 3 he threw up against us. And Barnes was the one guy they had that could guard JJ and be effective against him.
When you replace that with Richardson, Turkoglu, and expanding the role of JJ Redick, you see exactly what the problem is with that team. Actually, Barnes and Pietrus were above average defenders. And you replace that defense with Richardson and Redick?
No wonder our JJ has been putting up big numbers vs Orlando. Those 2 have no chance to guard JJ, as long as he stays aggressive. On the flip side, Richardson and Redick were 4 – 14 FG for 8 points. JJ put up 25 by himself. And that’s not even including what Jamal gave us when he was playing SG. Huge advantage to us at the SG position.
Ric Bucher said something yesterday referring that he thinks Howard may be traded in the offseason. How nice would it be if we could really dispose of this team, and get Howard out of this division. Or better yet, execute some of those trade scenarios that people want done.

Apparently Teague’s services were not reuired in any way shape or form last night. Our goal is to dismantle The Magic nod find PT for Teague.
It worked for one play off game. If it is not broke, why fix it?
If you have a F-250 and an Isuzu Pup, why drive the Isuzu Pup?
It all comes down to preference, and apparently Coach prefers Kirk/Jamal. Why not put the fruitless Teague cries to rest for now.
Focus on the goal: Beat The Magic and maintain what is working for now.
Tinkering is for the off season. Hey, I like Teague too, but am tired of talking about him 365/24/7. His time will come, soon. He is the future PG for this team IMHO. The future is not here yet, he should have stayed in college if PT was important to him.
It is also apparent that once Joe resigned, we had no need for Jordan Crawford. No way he would have helped us win last night, needing 25 looks. Dwight got 23 looks and how did that work for him?
A team concept is to create a 5 man attack, 15 touches for Joe was simply brilliant. The Magic were so confused, they had no idea where the torpedos were coming from and looked shell-shocked. Van Gundy had absolutely no answer whatsoever! Not a one! They were in a tsunami from start to finish.
________________________
Go read the Orlando blog this morning, they sound like us,
complaining after a win, the only difference is they lost.
Hey people, we won our 1st play off game one on the road since 1996!!!!
Can yall even comprehend that? The play offs makes the regular season so irrelevant, it’s time we upgraded our blog comments.
Dallas has won 50 games 1w years straight – so what?
They haven’t learned how to concentrate on beating a playoff team 4 games straight – ever! That is not who I want The Hawks to be, Utah can have those numbers as well. We need a Game Coach who can make adjustments within a series of 7 games. If we regress Tuesday, I think Teague should get a hard look in game 3. Adjustments is what Drew has proven he is capable of doing – all year long.
For some reasons unknown to us, Teague has not been his focus.
But, JC2’s do come a dime-a-dozen. The league is littered with his type.
Trading him to Washington was not the worst trade in the NBA tlast season. See Orlando and Boston for that claim.

DHoward is the only Magic starter that can defend any of our top 6 players. They have no SF or SG that can contain JJ, no PF that can contain Smoove or Horford, and no PG or SG that can contain Jamal. They don’t have anyone that can stay with JTeague either.
Woodson was so obsessed with double and triple teaming DHoward, he didn’t have enough sense to realize he was playing right into their hands. Last yr I commented on us needing to rely less on trying to stop DHoward and stopping his support cast. Make him wear himself out trying to carry the entire scoring and DEF load.
LDrew used that strategy to perfection, and it worked. Howard appears to have the attitude that being a dominant star in this league, should allow him to be as physical as he wants against whoever’s guarding him. While he can dish it out, he’s demonstrated that he can’t take it. That’s why whenever someone gets physical with him, he gets frustrated and whines and cries to the refs, and/or retaliates.
Physically, he’s a rock, but psychologically, he’s a cream puff.

It was a good win last night. Thats the best Joe has looked to me since that game against the Bucks. Also nice to see Hinrich play well because he was looking bad prior to last nights game. Lets hope they both keep it up. I didnt like the offense in the 4th quarter and they have to do a better job of boxing out. Jamal had a good offensive game but struggled defensively against Neson. I know Joe can defend Nelson but I dont want Joe chasing Jameer around because its clear Joe is going to play a lot of minutes. LD should throw Teague out there for a few minutes just for defense so Jamal can focus on scoring and so Joe doesnt have to spend the energy chasing Jameer around.

“ame #2 will be harder for the Hawks because Orlando isnt gonna let the Hawks go up 2 games on them and be embarrased because last year they destroyed us per game avg. of 20 pts. So now Atlanta you’ve got Orlando’s attention and you may have woken up the beast.”
________________
The fallacy here is glaring. This is not the same Magic team as last year.
This is not the same Hawks team as last year. Last year is forgotten history now. The magic traded away every advantage they once had, I already printed their losses, if you can’t recall?
Pietrus
Matt Barnes
Vince Carter
Gortat
Rashard Lewis
Is GONE! So is Mr. Woodson, Mike Bibby and Maurice Evans.
So is your old argument. Turn the page fella, its a new day.
The Magic Van Gundy himself said in his presser, “I have no answers for the Hawks. They are a better team than us right now.”
That team are you talking about doesn’t exist anymore.
You need to upgrade your comments and fear levels to the present reality. Did you notice Jameer in his and Dwight’s presser last night. All I saw was the crown of his head pointed downward, he didne even look into the camera once and mutter one word. He should have stayed in the locker room (captain?). Dwight looked like he was about to cry.
Where was their confidence. Dwight scored his carrer high and that wasn’t good enough for a win? He has to be demoralized into thinking,
“What more could I have done?”
The answer is: he CAN NOT do it by himself. Even Superman needed Lois Lane! Jameer, likewise scored 27 points, but a true PG has to have more than 1 assist! They need HELP and they have NOTHING!
They are shooting two pistols, The Hawks are shooting 5.

Hey, sometimes the best trade is no trade at all.
Otis Smith has single handedly removed every obstacle The Hawks had against Orlando. All we had to do is stand by and watch the train wreck, in disbelief.
We have knifed through all their matador defenders, sans Dwight.
On him, we drew 5 Fouls, a frustration technical (see ZaZa) and 8 turn overs. Everyone else, including Jameer were nothing more than
“drill – cones” while we ran try out drills at the combine.
We drove thru Amway Arena, ordered happy meals and drove off with a toy prize inside!

Tim Duncan on NBA TV just said, “We have been together for 9 years straight and have incredible chemistry. No other teams have that.”
Well, our Hawks are second with 6 years. All we need is an infusion of talent at PG and Center. Then we should be a solid elite contender.

I think I’m going to make it an NBA doubleheader for me next weekend. I’m 4 hours from ATL and 3 hours from Memphis. So I can conceivably go to both games, depending how I feel next weekend. Plenty of tickets still available for the Hawks game, but that’ll probably change come Monday.
Hawks play Friday night. Memphis plays Saturday night. That’s a lot of road traveling, but I’ve done it before. It’ll be a good 2 day trip on an Easter Weekend.

Yeah . . HUGE oversight by me. Battier has been huge off the bench for the Griz, from a defensive standpoint. They actually have, a defensive presence off the bench now, which is why they made a huge jump this year.

When the Hawks couldn’t score last night their defense kept them in the game and frustrated the Magic especially Howard. The Magic have traded away all of the mentally tough guys on their squad from last year. All the Hawks have to do is keep bringing the defense. The Magic will cave.
Chicago, outside of D. Rose, has no assassins on their team either, just a great ball coach. Hawks can beat them too, as Horford plays like a man possessed against them with his college buddy Noah on the other team.
This could very well set up to be a trip to the Eastern conference finals for the Hawks.

_____________
In one game Coach Drew, (cheap suits, sleepy looks and whatever else) has surpassed Mr. Woodson. In the only season that really matters?
Coach Drew has won: the first game 1, round 1 on the road in Atlabta since 1996. Period! If this trend continues, he should be given the missing parts, an extension and his respect. Also, these players really like playing for him. If he is willing to listen to Josh, Joe, Al, Jamal now Kirk? They will tell him what they need help on to win. If they demand Teague play? They can have Teague too, it is not like he is unavailable to them. Najeh said in that last Magic home game, Josh yelled at Drew,
Put Collins in! He is too big!” Drew listened to hsi player.
Doesn’t it stand to reason, all Josh has to do is yell, “Put Teague in! Kirk is to slow?” After all, Drew has proven – he will listen.

Northcyde – I agree with your stats about JJ. And in my opinion, he is an elite defender. Now what does that mean? I would guess he’s in the top 6 SG’s as far as defense goes. I can’t think of 5 better than him.
Now I understand what Grandad and Sautee are saying. He does take plays off. Bu when he sets his mind to it, he’s one of the best lockdown defenders in the game at his position. But he’s no shotblocker or steal machine either. Just good, very good straight up man D.
Now I do respect Grandad’s opinion, and he is looking with a trained eye. But this is the NBA, and JJ has both sides of the court going unlike Powe or Battier. He’s not only our best man defender, but best on O also.
And here’s hoping LD doesn’t get so locked in to playing Jamal at PG, that he doesn’t hurt the team if Jamal is not cooking.
And with Teague fresh, there is almost no PG in the League that can keep up with him.
And I been sayin’ we’re deep, if only LD would use it properly.
There’s not alot of teams in the League that can start 3 of the top 50 players in the League in Al, JJ, and Josh, and then have your top 3 off the bench as Jamal, Marvin, and ZaZa.
And with #’s 9 and 10 off the bench as Wilkens and Teague, that’s deep. As deep as you need to win a championship.

Yeah, man. Nas #27), man that little girl runs like Jerius Norwood.
Fast to the hole, spin moves out of the tackles like DRose and always end up in the end zone. Electrifying!
We had a play maker named “Lee Lee” last year, but she moved overseas to Germany to play for that team. We play in all black at home and all white on the road. We were The Atlanta xplosion (tic – tic BOOM!)
was our mantra. But, with the New Owner (David Irons) we have a new look and new coaches. Coach Andre Jones was our Defensive Coordinator in years past, he was on a Super Bowl team, Minnesota Vikings in his past. He has a stand out son, a freshman last year at his Alma-Mater Notre Dame last season. Look him up: Tai-Ler Jones, will be a Sophmore this year. A heck of a talent at WR.
They had that kid on the Student Journalism Staff, that fell to his death from a scaffold while filming, when a wind storm blew him down right before their play offs last season. But, Andre Jones lives in Atlanta and his family are my patients as well. Yeah, this team is very professional and well backed. Now, we have deep pockets as well. Look fopr some big things from The IWFL. My specialty is sports injury assessments and
Extremity Care: diagnoses, treatment and rehabilitation of arms and legs. I love it!
Yeah, you better stay close to the facilities or grab some depends.

Orlando has a $89 mil payroll ($19 mil more than the Hawks), but yet no backup for Dwight, and they might not even get out of the first round.
I think if Orlando loses to the Hawks, there will be big changes in Orlando. SVG might be let go, and the GM might be let go. And a playoff loss makes it more likely that Howard will leave and go somewhere else.

And Battier . . just ice cold with the shot. Good win by that team.
Zebo is a monster. Maybe one of the most underrated players in the NBA. Character issues . . definitely. But the guy can ball. I love the way he gets to the boards. And like Barkley said, he may have the ugliest offensive looking game ever, but it works for him.

From Jeff Schultz blog;
Al Horford, the most universally respected player in the Hawks’ locker room, said: “Nobody has ever quit on Larry. It was more about frustration. I felt like some guys got discouraged because their own games weren’t going the way they wanted it to. That happens during a season.”
Horford said that if players had quit on Drew this season, “It would be the same as quitting on your own teammates. That didn’t happen this year.”
Did it happen last year under Woodson? “In all honesty, I think it did,” he (Al) said.
He pointed to the team’s play in the postseason, particularly in the four-game sweep by Orlando, which also dominated the Hawks during the regular season.
“Part of it could have been Woodson and that some guys had been with him for a long time, but part of it also was we were playing Orlando.”.
playoff-win-shows-hawks-havent-quit-on-larry-drew/
Some of us fans have always said Woody was not the only problem, because players quit on him. But its always easier to get rid of the coach, than it is to replace the players.
Even if the Hawks win this series, I think our GM should shake up the roster.

You people finally getting the point? Every underdog has had a chance to win. Do you think Memphis is going to win the series against the Spurs? I say heck no, the only way they win is if Manu is out for the whole series. You people need to calm it. Hinrich is still a bad and backwards move trade. Sund, the ASG, and Drew are still horrible at there jobs. Good win by the Hawks, Grizzs, and whatever other team that pulls a upset in game 1, but it is a 7 game series.

Now back to the discussion.
From my perspective, as a Coach, = observation.
[true proof would come in the film room] (not stat sheet)
Joe does not live up to expectations in these areas:
*Takes plays off = negative effect on teammates (leadership)
*Poor fundamental stance
*Turns head away from ball loses man, gets beat (back cuts)
*Doesn’t Box-Out
*Poor help [team] defender
*Doesn’t fight through screens
*quits on plays if beat
*etc. etc. etc.
*Not An Elite Defender
He has the potential…I wish he were…he is sometimes…
I do not dislike Joe…I’m not a hater…I am pragmatic !

everything else falls into place.”
That’s what happened in Chicago with Rose.
” He sets the tone day after day after day;
everyone else eventually fell into place.
When your best player cares that much, it’s contagious.”
Let’s end this;

Grandad . . all I say is that if JJ was the type of defender that you describe, there’s NO WAY in heck that he’d hold the opposing SG or SF to the type of numbers that he does. It just wouldn’t be possible.
He’d get destroyed every night, if he were the type of player you described. And the Hawks would have no shot whatsoever of being even an average defensive team.
You make the dude to be a lazy, non-fundamentally sound player. Even last night, Drew had to put JJ on Nelson, to at least attempt to slow him down.
I just say that you purposely look for the negatives in his game, and don’t even acknowledge the positives. People do the same thing to other players on this team, so is what it is I guess. It’s like when people call JJ “a ballhog”, despite him leading the team in assists and taking less shots this year, than he has during his entire tenure as a Hawk.
Sometimes, I just have to question what some of you are watching. LOL . . it’s wild, to be honest.
Those same stats, if I were to do it on offensive production, would prove that JJ has had a very sub par year. But the defensive stats are lying I guess.
It is what it is Grandad. If the Hawks need someone to stop or slow down a SG, SF, or even a PG, the person that is going to be called on . . is Joe Johnson. And on most nights, he can at least slow that guy down.
And the other coaches around the league know this, which is why he keeps being voted to the All-Star game . . for his solid all-around game.

“If you ask me — and I acknowledge that no one actually did — Howard especially hates losing to the Hawks because they don’t have his full respect. Howard doesn’t enjoy losing to teams such as Boston and Los Angeles, but at least those teams are filled with NBA champions and future Hall of Famers. When it comes down to it, he can live with losing to winners. But the Hawks? Their best player is Joe freakin’ Johnson, their second-best player was the second-best player on Howard’s AAU team (Smith) and their third-best player is a jump-shooting, soft-spoken big man who Howard routinely pulverizes (Horford). That’s not a collection of players Howard is OK losing to.”

Observation!
Come to think of it, all the great teams of the 70’s and 80’s had incredible team chemistry. Most star and great role players never changed teams like they do today. That was a different era then. Those guys despised their opponents and would never dream of going to play elsewhere.
Their pride came from beating them, not joining them.
IDK if they even had UFA back then? I do know about The Bird Rule though.

Laker frontline should be ashamed of themselves today. Gasol is a non-factor. So is Odom. Bynum playing solid, but can’t stop the pick and roll. Hornets getting into the paint at will. Just terrible defense and poor effort by that frontline.

Why feel sorry for him? There are probably only 3 centers in this league (Bynum, Perkins, Bogut) who Howard would not abuse. So it is expected that Howard will abuse Horford.
We know that Howard can be a one man wrecking crew. But the bottom line is, the Hawks “team” won the game, not Howard. Let Howard abuse the Hawks all he wants. We just need to contain everybody else.

drmaryb I’m on record saying I hate Drew because he has agendas other than the success of my home team. Doesn’t change the fact that we have mismatches at 3 positions thanks to superior talent at those positions. The only thing that made it not a mistake to play Teague is the fact that got a lead and maintained it. Consider this:
Jamal Crawford was the only Hawk to play at least 15 minutes with a negative plus/minus. In other words, despite his scoring outburst, the Hawks were outscored when he was on the floor because of his poor defense. If the Hawks had lost, we’d all be talking about that.

Don’t put me in the category of people who: [purposely]
” purposely look for the negatives in his game,
don’t even acknowledge the positives.
People do the same thing to other players on this team ”
1st of all I look at all our players with a critical eye.
[some definitions of critical besides the obvious]
* occupied with or skilled in criticism.
* involving skillful judgment as to truth, merit, etc.;
* a critical analysis.
* of or pertaining to critics or criticism: .
* providing variants, proposed emendations
If I were the Coach:
those critiques that I mentioned of Joe;
would not go unattended.
For your [nc's] benefit;
*Joe is graceful
*Joe is marvelously skilled
*Joe does not get in the headlines (negatively)
*Joe is durable
*Joe is a workhorse
*Joe played injured all this year
*Joe’s elbow still ain’t right / *shot ain’t right
*[could be like a pitcher & the [surgery] messed up his mechanics]
However;
I don’t feel like Joe has that fire in his belly that
Russell, Jordan, Kobe, et al
had / have.
But, very few athletes have that.
Tiger had it, then lost it.
(that’s what one gets for breaking ones vows)
When I mention a trade;
it has a logical and pragmatic viewpoint.
It has nothing to do with liking or disliking Joe, or Josh.
By the way;
We absolutely need to re-sign Jamal.
Once again the critiques of Joe…I’ve observed over time.
You say I purposely look for the negatives.
Even if I did – if they were not there I would not see ‘em.
In that regard, I say your profound admiration for Joe
causes you to turn a blind eye to his faults & shortcomings.
However, I’m done, let’s revel in the Hawks win !

All I did was to illustrate to you that whatever you’re seeing in JJ, doesn’t match up to what he’s holding his opponent to. Not even close.
And remember, we’re only an average defensive team. And JJ is guarding a position in which some of the most dangerous scorers in the league play. Yet, by the numbers, he’s arguably a top 5 defender at SG AND SF.

northcyde, Najeh,
I was thinking the same thing. With JJ, CP3 and Josh, thats a really good core to build around with the right coach. And even if we dont get the chance to draft Horford, so what? Josh is just fine at PF.
CP3 made an All-Star out of David West, and he made Tyson Chandler better. he would have done wonders for Josh. And with CP3, I dont think Josh would be hanging out by the 3-pt line as much.
And with Chills moving without the ball, CP3 would find him, since Childress would start at SF.
Andd with the money we spent on Claxton, we could have gone after a legit center. Plus we wouldnt get Horford, but we would still have a lottery pick that year to address other needs.
CP3/JJ/Chills/Smoove/Center.

But I recall the enthusiasm on here, expressed prior to the western conference ball tip. In defense of the overly happy ones, they saw total dominance from the Hawks at 4 positions on the floor last night.
Jameer rendered himself to being a SG with only 1 assist.
We saw an out matched magic basketball team. They, not us need to find an answer to stop the Hawks now.

the only person on the magic’s team that the hawks cant defend is Howard, so why waste the manpower and strategy on a guy you know you cant defend when you can just take away any other scoring. the record for points in a playoff game is 69 by Jordan against the Celtics and they still lost (hint hint)
the hawks are like 4th in the league in 3-point defense (somewhere up there, dont quote me on that) which is perfect
this strategy could probably be used on the bulls as well (not that im calling this series over, not by a long shot) just let Rose go crazy but shut down Boozer, Noah, and company

The Hawks DOMINANCE over the Magic saturday proved that I was exactly right about the Orlando Magic. The big trade the magic made earlier in the year to supposedly improve their team BACKFIRED. The Magic are worse now than they were two years ago. What I want people to learn from reading my blogs is that although the Magic have enough talent to get to the finals and win, so do the Hawks. Most fans in atlanta dont appreciate the Hawks for what they are truly capable of. Folks when you make the playoffes in the eastern conference, it is the top 8 records in the regular season even if that record is a losing record. But then if you eliminate the #4 seed (orlando) and you are the #5 seed (Atlanta), Atlanta will then leapfrog over orlando and be one of the top 4 clubs in the eastern conference. Folks the Hawks are much better than you realize. The Hawks are essentially the same team from last year that won 53 games. The only thing is that they are much better because with Hinrich, they have improved their defensive philosophy and that is what wins you ballgames in the post-season. So then the question must be, how good are the hawks. I know this. The Hawks have just as good a chance to win a title as anybody. That should make everybody feel great. Stay tuned and jump on the Hawks bandwagon. They are going ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS.

For all the bad games that the Hawks had this year, underachieving and failing to win 50; having a horrendous losing streak of six to close out a regular season; exaggerated talk of joe johnson’s demise; and all the bad things that happened. A strange thing happened against the Magic the other night: THE REAL HAWKS TEAM SHOW UP; THE SAME HAWKS TEAM THAT PLAYED BOSTON IN THE PLAYOFFS A FEW YEARS AGO TO A STANDOFF AFTER SIX GAMES. THAT TEAM SHOWED UP. That Hawks team can beat anyone easily. Hopefully that Hawks team will continue to show up and give the Hawks a fighting chance to win the title they are hungry for. The Hawks are fighting a curse of mediocrity and they are trying to overcome almost insurmountable odds. There are really teriffic teams in the playoffs this year and i believe almost any of them is capable of winning the title. HOPEFULLY THE HAWKS WILL BE THE FIRST TEAM TO 16 WINS SO THEY CAN BRING THE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP HERE TO ATLANTA WHERE IT BELONGS. GO HAWKS. HAWKS IN 5.

Captain Kirk was unbelievable against Orlando. He was firing 3s, playing STELLER DEFENSE, and while he didnt beam scotty up, he sure delivered enough dimes (assists) and bolstered the Hawks defense enough to keep a chokehold on the Magics perimeter shooters. THAT WAS THE BEST DEFENSE I HAVE EVER SEEN THE HAWKS PLAY AGAINST A QUALITY TEAM LOADED WITH PERIMETER SHOOTERS. What an unbelievable victory. Was it a fluke? Stay tuned and keep your phasers on stun, kill and destroy!

I wonder what all the fans who are complaining and bashing the Hawks will say when the HAWKS WIN THE TITLE IN JUNE. Hopefully the complaining will CEASE and the bashing will STOP. Maybe at that time I will read some positive things about Joe Johnson. But until the championship trophy is claimed and hoisted in June, you will hear the doubters, bandwagon-jumpers, and naysayers come up with all kind of garbage about the Hawks. Here’s the reality of the playoffs. #1 and #2 seeds in western conference lost their opening games:lakers and spurs. Thunder look great, but so does Dallas and Denver. In the East there are five great teams:orlando, atlanta, chicago, Miami and Boston. Out of those 10 top teams in the NBA someone will emerge as a champion. There is no dominating team out there except Atlanta. ATLANTA HAS JUST AS GOOD A CHANCE OF CLAIMING THE GOLD TROPHY AS ANY OF THE OTHER 9 teams in the upper echelon of the NBA. When the Hawks are playing their game, THEY ARE VIRTUALLY UNBEATABLE AND UNSTOPPABLE. I know for sure if the Hawks play their game, take no prisoners and make no excuses, there will be a parade in Atlanta this summer for the SOON-TO-BE world champion Atlanta hawks. it has a nice ring to it so lets go out there and get it done. Go Hawks.
