Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 103, Magic 93
11:57 pm April 16, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Orlando– We already knew the Hawks can defend the Magic but it’s possible they won’t be able to score like this through the entire series.
- The Hawks made 13 of 27 shots from 16 to 23 feet. That’s a high percentage even for a team that made them at a better clip than anyone other than the Mavs during the regular season.
- But, thanks in large part to J.J, the Hawks also had an effective Plan B (11 of 19 from 3 to 15 feet) and Plan C (21 of 29 free-throw attempts). That provides some evidence that the Hawks might be able to score when those long Js stop falling if they can make it a point to go to those other plans.
- “The primary problem is we couldn’t guard them at all,” Stan Van Gundy said.
- And, Xs and Os aside, the most important development might have been that the Hawks finally stood up to the Magic in a postseason game. That’s worth a lot for a team that was embarrassed in last year’s second round and staggered into the playoffs on a six-game losing streak.
- “People were a little frustrated with us because of those last six games but, for us, we didn’t even think about it,” Jamal said. “Last year’s series was last year’s series; we didn’t think about that, either. We feel confident going into the playoffs. We got one down, one more to go here.”
- “We are here to win,” Twin said. “We are not here to get a free T-shirt and head home or anything like that. We accomplished the fist step. We got the win tonight, and Part 2 is on Tuesday night.”
- Suddenly the questions about Atlanta’s state of mind have shifted to the Magic, who lost in their sparkling new arena to a team they thumped from the playoffs last spring.
- “It’s frustrating that we lost but it’s the first game,” Dwight said. “We’ll come back in the second game with a better effort.”
- The Magic can’t ask for anything more from Dwight. He was magnificent while scoring 46 points on 23 shots and grabbing 19 rebounds. But other than a 20-point eruption from Jameer in the third quarter, the Magic couldn’t find points from other sources.
- “Offensively we have to get better, move the ball, whatever,” Jameer said. “I don’t know. I really can’t put a finger on it right now.”
- The Hawks for the most part stayed straight up on Dwight even after he thrashed them for 31 points in the first half.
- “We came in at halftime and we knew that one player was not going to beat us,” Collins said. “Dwight can go out there and have 60 points. As long as we have 61, we will take that.”
- Twin and Zaza were in foul trouble early and the Hawks sent a parade of little-used big men at Dwight. He overpowered all of them more easily than he did Twin, who made entry passes tough enough that Dwight was called for lane violations three times.
- “He got in his head a little bit,” Josh said. “Even though Dwight had an explosive game I think he did a pretty good job on him, especially in that second half.”
- The Hawks kept Orlando off the 3-point line. Hinrich controlled Jameer on pick-and-rolls. That was pretty much all it took to slow Magic players who weren’t Dwight.
- “He was scoring but the other guys weren’t getting as many touches,” L.D. said. “That was just a decision I made to stay with that particular coverage. I did not want to open up any type of opportunities with their 3-point shooters.”
- J.J., Jamal and Hinrich outplayed Orlando’s group of Jameer, Arenas, J-Rich and Redick. “To be honest with you, their guards killed us,” Redick said.
- J.J. carried over the edge he showed from those final four games into Game 1. “I wanted to attack early and just try to make the game easier,” Joe said. “I was getting in there and making plays for myself and my teammates and it worked out.”
- Joe took it to J-Rich and Redick, shot over Dwight’s help D and generally made good decisions passing out of double teams. “When he does get the ball we know Dwight is coming over to double-team him,” L.D. said. “He just has to put himself in a position where he can score just a little bit faster.”
- “He has to keep that up,” Smoove said. “He’s our offensive leader as well as Jamal. What I always stress to him is make quick moves. That’s what he’s been doing.”
- Joe played 45 minutes. “I thought he got a little bit tired at the end,” Drew said. “I told him I was going to ride him all the way until the end. He’s our go-to guy.”
- Jamal was lax on getting around screens and containing Arenas on the dribble. But he more than offset that with 23 points on 14 shots, including 5 of 6 free throws, and delivered some daggers after halftime.
- Maybe Hinrich was just saving it for the playoffs. No longer was it a pick-and-roll horror show for the Hawks against the Magic.
- “He’s getting over screens. He’s fighting, picking up the point guard full court and turning him in the half court,” Josh said. “He’s doing a good job.”
- Kirk also was making his shots and had five rebounds.
- “His energy was really high,” Drew said. “His shot was looking good. I could see the confidence when he shot a couple of them in the first half.”
- Josh recovered from a poor start. He ended up taking eight of his 14 shots from closer than 15 feet. He kept his head in the game after some early foul trouble.
- “A couple of cheap fouls,” he said. “I stayed with it for the full 48 and I was able to show some production and help out a little bit in that third quarter.”
- The Hawks have a plan to beat the Magic. Now the test is sticking to it or improving it after Orlando goes back to the drawing board.
- “I am sure like us they are going to see what they can do better but it doesn’t matter for us,” Zaza said. “We know individually what we can do. If we play together for 48 minutes I think we should be in good shape. We are going to have a chance to win the series if we play just like today. Together, help each other defensively, share the ball. It was beautiful to watch our team.”

Drive Thru Lane! (open 24 Hours)
Hey, sometimes the best trade is no trade at all.
Otis Smith has single handedly removed every obstacle The Hawks had against Orlando. All we had to do is stand by and watch the train wreck, in disbelief.
We have knifed through all their matador defenders, sans Dwight.
On him, we drew 5 Fouls, a frustration technical (see ZaZa) and 8 turn overs. Everyone else, including Jameer were nothing more than
“drill – cones” while we ran try out drills at the combine.
We drove thru Amway Arena, ordered happy meals and drove off with a toy prize inside!

Tim Duncan on NBA TV just said, “We have been together for 9 years straight and have incredible chemistry. No other teams have that.”
Well, our Hawks are second with 6 years. All we need is an infusion of talent at PG and Center. Then we should be a solid elite contender.
We need a shake up, not a pipe bomb.

I think I’m going to make it an NBA doubleheader for me next weekend. I’m 4 hours from ATL and 3 hours from Memphis. So I can conceivably go to both games, depending how I feel next weekend. Plenty of tickets still available for the Hawks game, but that’ll probably change come Monday.
Hawks play Friday night. Memphis plays Saturday night. That’s a lot of road traveling, but I’ve done it before. It’ll be a good 2 day trip on an Easter Weekend.

LOL @ JeJe . . I made that mistake, still thinking of him as a Houston Rocket. I noticed that mistake as I was compiling the numbers, but forgot to take that statement out.
Yeah . . HUGE oversight by me. Battier has been huge off the bench for the Griz, from a defensive standpoint. They actually have, a defensive presence off the bench now, which is why they made a huge jump this year.

When the Hawks couldn’t score last night their defense kept them in the game and frustrated the Magic especially Howard. The Magic have traded away all of the mentally tough guys on their squad from last year. All the Hawks have to do is keep bringing the defense. The Magic will cave.
Chicago, outside of D. Rose, has no assassins on their team either, just a great ball coach. Hawks can beat them too, as Horford plays like a man possessed against them with his college buddy Noah on the other team.
This could very well set up to be a trip to the Eastern conference finals for the Hawks.

No Scrubs!
The thing about the play offs is: no scrubs allowed!
Like TLC said, “I don’t want no scrub.”
_____________
In one game Coach Drew, (cheap suits, sleepy looks and whatever else) has surpassed Mr. Woodson. In the only season that really matters?
Coach Drew has won: the first game 1, round 1 on the road in Atlabta since 1996. Period! If this trend continues, he should be given the missing parts, an extension and his respect. Also, these players really like playing for him. If he is willing to listen to Josh, Joe, Al, Jamal now Kirk? They will tell him what they need help on to win. If they demand Teague play? They can have Teague too, it is not like he is unavailable to them. Najeh said in that last Magic home game, Josh yelled at Drew,
Put Collins in! He is too big!” Drew listened to hsi player.
Doesn’t it stand to reason, all Josh has to do is yell, “Put Teague in! Kirk is to slow?” After all, Drew has proven – he will listen.

The win sucks because it makes LD, Sund, and ASG look good, but I guess it’s ok.
Game 2 a must-win and Joe and Jamal need to combine for 45+ if we are to go to the Finals this year (which is possible. I am not impressed with the East)

Unbelievable!
“It’s not Drew’s strategy that produces mismatches, it’s Atlanta’s superior TALENT at the forward positions that produces mismatches.”
____________________
If you hate Drew then just say that then. Don’t ignore the fact that his strategy is unveiled when he makes out the line ups. Make your points with out being ignorant to the facts.
If Drew DNP Teague? Isn’t that also a coaches decision? Doesn’t he get skewered for that being a poor strategy? You can’t have it both ways and yet be deemed credible in your comments. Pick a side and stay with it!

I’ve seen only a quarter of semi-pro women’s football. And those women really get into it. That’s no powder puff lingere type football game going on out there. But of the little I saw of it, if you have an elite athlete on a team, she can dominate the game . . like how elite high school players do.

It will also be interesting to see if LD will live and die with Jamal backing up at PG and leave Teague to rot on the bench. ‘Cause we’ve all been to that movie a few times and have seen the outcome.”

Actually, no one has ever seen this outcome before. We have never played Orlando 7 games straight in a play off series with these particular to teams. This is a first and we have only seen 1 of 7 games so far.
Orlando must prove they can stop Jamal before we should make any adjustment with Jamal backing up Kirk at PG.

Northcyde – I agree with your stats about JJ. And in my opinion, he is an elite defender. Now what does that mean? I would guess he’s in the top 6 SG’s as far as defense goes. I can’t think of 5 better than him.
Now I understand what Grandad and Sautee are saying. He does take plays off. Bu when he sets his mind to it, he’s one of the best lockdown defenders in the game at his position. But he’s no shotblocker or steal machine either. Just good, very good straight up man D.
Now I do respect Grandad’s opinion, and he is looking with a trained eye. But this is the NBA, and JJ has both sides of the court going unlike Powe or Battier. He’s not only our best man defender, but best on O also.
And here’s hoping LD doesn’t get so locked in to playing Jamal at PG, that he doesn’t hurt the team if Jamal is not cooking.
And with Teague fresh, there is almost no PG in the League that can keep up with him.
And I been sayin’ we’re deep, if only LD would use it properly.
There’s not alot of teams in the League that can start 3 of the top 50 players in the League in Al, JJ, and Josh, and then have your top 3 off the bench as Jamal, Marvin, and ZaZa.
And with #’s 9 and 10 off the bench as Wilkens and Teague, that’s deep. As deep as you need to win a championship.

Yeah, man. Nas #27), man that little girl runs like Jerius Norwood.
Fast to the hole, spin moves out of the tackles like DRose and always end up in the end zone. Electrifying!
We had a play maker named “Lee Lee” last year, but she moved overseas to Germany to play for that team. We play in all black at home and all white on the road. We were The Atlanta xplosion (tic – tic BOOM!)
was our mantra. But, with the New Owner (David Irons) we have a new look and new coaches. Coach Andre Jones was our Defensive Coordinator in years past, he was on a Super Bowl team, Minnesota Vikings in his past. He has a stand out son, a freshman last year at his Alma-Mater Notre Dame last season. Look him up: Tai-Ler Jones, will be a Sophmore this year. A heck of a talent at WR.
They had that kid on the Student Journalism Staff, that fell to his death from a scaffold while filming, when a wind storm blew him down right before their play offs last season. But, Andre Jones lives in Atlanta and his family are my patients as well. Yeah, this team is very professional and well backed. Now, we have deep pockets as well. Look fopr some big things from The IWFL. My specialty is sports injury assessments and
Extremity Care: diagnoses, treatment and rehabilitation of arms and legs. I love it!
Yeah, you better stay close to the facilities or grab some depends.
LOL! One good thing is your food choices will improve and you will live a lot longer with less fatty fried foods, the trade off is better heart function and a ton more energy stores. No stadium food for you will also save money, but hey there is always beer and wine to enjoy.

Orlando has a $89 mil payroll ($19 mil more than the Hawks), but yet no backup for Dwight, and they might not even get out of the first round.
I think if Orlando loses to the Hawks, there will be big changes in Orlando. SVG might be let go, and the GM might be let go. And a playoff loss makes it more likely that Howard will leave and go somewhere else.

Wow @ how Memphis pulled that game out. And I didn’t like that shot by Tony Parker at all, that led to the Battier 3. The dude was ice cold the entire game, and he settled for that 17 footer. I knew it was a bad shot as soon as he shot it.
And Battier . . just ice cold with the shot. Good win by that team.
Zebo is a monster. Maybe one of the most underrated players in the NBA. Character issues . . definitely. But the guy can ball. I love the way he gets to the boards. And like Barkley said, he may have the ugliest offensive looking game ever, but it works for him.
Gasol had a nice game too and had some big hoops down the stretch.
Good win for the Griz.

I don’t have to be Nostradamas-sp to know that you want somebody, anybody FIRED? That is pretty much the bane of your existence on here.
You and your only friend Clyde, must have been FIRED from every job you ever had. Being fired is sometimes the best thing that can happen top most people – it forces you to move on to bigger and better opportunities. Sometimes, it can make you even start your own company.
See Arthur Blank! Do you even know his story? He was FIRED from a BS Hardware Store and went on to create HOME DEPOT! He is so smart, he told his customers, “DO IT YOUR SELF!”. How brilliant is that?
That’s like telling a Car Wash customer to pay you and wash his own damned car – you will supply the dirty water and very little soap.

The game, as of right now, is not in danger of being sold out, so I’m good in that regard right now. But a trip to Memphis, seeing that the FedEx Forum is right on Beale St, is always an added bonus.
I’ll have to see how the ATL trip goes, then decide to go to Memphis. I might just buy a cheap upper deck ticket to the Griz game, then maybe decide to upgrade once I get to the city.

You fail to understand, you can only learn so much on a blog. The blog is limited to it’s talent level (we are a very intelligent group on here, for the most part). You, however, really needed to stay in school, like most NBA players, your fundamental blogging skills are very weak.
D-League material, if you must know where you stack up on here.
Being exposed to a well rounded education is really the key, character is critical and choosing the best schools also helps.
But, I can hold my own regardless of any topic you choose.
I can gossip about nothing – like TMZ, discuss sports, politics and just anything else you can think of. With you, I’m just wading in the kiddie pool.
But my help to you is to log off and read a book, expand your vocabulary beyond two words: FIRE _________ , (fill in the blank) because, that’s about all you got. The good news is: you are never too old to learn. Don’t geow up to be an old fool, that would be TRAGIC and a shame.

From Jeff Schultz blog;
Al Horford, the most universally respected player in the Hawks’ locker room, said: “Nobody has ever quit on Larry. It was more about frustration. I felt like some guys got discouraged because their own games weren’t going the way they wanted it to. That happens during a season.”
Horford said that if players had quit on Drew this season, “It would be the same as quitting on your own teammates. That didn’t happen this year.”
Did it happen last year under Woodson? “In all honesty, I think it did,” he (Al) said.
He pointed to the team’s play in the postseason, particularly in the four-game sweep by Orlando, which also dominated the Hawks during the regular season.
“Part of it could have been Woodson and that some guys had been with him for a long time, but part of it also was we were playing Orlando.”.
playoff-win-shows-hawks-havent-quit-on-larry-drew/
Some of us fans have always said Woody was not the only problem, because players quit on him. But its always easier to get rid of the coach, than it is to replace the players.
Even if the Hawks win this series, I think our GM should shake up the roster.

You people finally getting the point? Every underdog has had a chance to win. Do you think Memphis is going to win the series against the Spurs? I say heck no, the only way they win is if Manu is out for the whole series. You people need to calm it. Hinrich is still a bad and backwards move trade. Sund, the ASG, and Drew are still horrible at there jobs. Good win by the Hawks, Grizzs, and whatever other team that pulls a upset in game 1, but it is a 7 game series.

Now back to the discussion.
From my perspective, as a Coach, = observation.
[true proof would come in the film room] (not stat sheet)
Joe does not live up to expectations in these areas:
*Takes plays off = negative effect on teammates (leadership)
*Poor fundamental stance
*Turns head away from ball loses man, gets beat (back cuts)
*Doesn’t Box-Out
*Poor help [team] defender
*Doesn’t fight through screens
*quits on plays if beat
*etc. etc. etc.
*Not An Elite Defender
He has the potential…I wish he were…he is sometimes…
I do not dislike Joe…I’m not a hater…I am pragmatic !
Bill Simmons:
observation from an Oklahoma City practice:
Durant and Westbrook going full-speed through every drill
like it was Game 7 of the playoffs.
I asked Scotty Brooks about it afterward;
he smiled and said something like,
“When your best players care that much,
everything else falls into place.”
That’s what happened in Chicago with Rose.
” He sets the tone day after day after day;
everyone else eventually fell into place.
When your best player cares that much, it’s contagious.”
Let’s end this;
I know what I know, as do you.
I flunked arithmatic.
You will type me under the table with stats.
But, Joe is not what you are I wish him to be.

Grandad . . all I say is that if JJ was the type of defender that you describe, there’s NO WAY in heck that he’d hold the opposing SG or SF to the type of numbers that he does. It just wouldn’t be possible.
He’d get destroyed every night, if he were the type of player you described. And the Hawks would have no shot whatsoever of being even an average defensive team.
You make the dude to be a lazy, non-fundamentally sound player. Even last night, Drew had to put JJ on Nelson, to at least attempt to slow him down.
I just say that you purposely look for the negatives in his game, and don’t even acknowledge the positives. People do the same thing to other players on this team, so is what it is I guess. It’s like when people call JJ “a ballhog”, despite him leading the team in assists and taking less shots this year, than he has during his entire tenure as a Hawk.
Sometimes, I just have to question what some of you are watching. LOL . . it’s wild, to be honest.
Those same stats, if I were to do it on offensive production, would prove that JJ has had a very sub par year. But the defensive stats are lying I guess.
It is what it is Grandad. If the Hawks need someone to stop or slow down a SG, SF, or even a PG, the person that is going to be called on . . is Joe Johnson. And on most nights, he can at least slow that guy down.
And the other coaches around the league know this, which is why he keeps being voted to the All-Star game . . for his solid all-around game.

The only reason anyone here accepts you or pays attention to you is because you’re a woman. Other than that, you’re just a fish in the sea.”

Laughable stuff. Is that all you got? Ha Ha!
Well, I love being a woman – that certainly never stopped me from balling in medical school either. 3/4 of my male counter parts couldn’t pass their: Four Part National Board Exams either. I hear most of them work at Denny’s and Wal-Mart.
But, what does that have to do with me Ballin’ on a Basketball Blog?
Basketball is not rocket science, to me it ’s pretty simple stuff, blogging basically boils down to communicating at a high level with equal talent.
Sorry, male or female – you just don’t measure up on here, to me. And like you said, I’m a woman. But, I’m still punking you! What does that say about you?
If it weren’t for women? There would be no men for me to blog with.
BTW, who’s your Daddy? I could be him too, if you need me to.
You’re cute, though.

Back to the real topic! Great Hawks Win! Now, The Magic have to adjust to The Hawks, because we imposed our will upon them regardless of what their game plan was coming in.
JeJe is always good for a laugh or two.

BINGO!!
“If you ask me — and I acknowledge that no one actually did — Howard especially hates losing to the Hawks because they don’t have his full respect. Howard doesn’t enjoy losing to teams such as Boston and Los Angeles, but at least those teams are filled with NBA champions and future Hall of Famers. When it comes down to it, he can live with losing to winners. But the Hawks? Their best player is Joe freakin’ Johnson, their second-best player was the second-best player on Howard’s AAU team (Smith) and their third-best player is a jump-shooting, soft-spoken big man who Howard routinely pulverizes (Horford). That’s not a collection of players Howard is OK losing to.”

Hinrich move was only bad due to giving up 1st round pick.
Not because Hinrich is white.
Why can’t you at least say Cap’n Kirk was instrumental
in the Hawks win last eve.
You sir, have an agenda.
Perhaps, the team is finally meshing after the trade.
Is that a possibility ?
Would it bea possibility if he [-KH-] were a minority ?
Bring something conclusive to the table blogman.
All you said for awhile was:
” he couldn’t guard Bibby ”
Let’s hear it now:
” he can guard Jameer “.
Waiting.

Observation!
Come to think of it, all the great teams of the 70’s and 80’s had incredible team chemistry. Most star and great role players never changed teams like they do today. That was a different era then. Those guys despised their opponents and would never dream of going to play elsewhere.
Their pride came from beating them, not joining them.
IDK if they even had UFA back then? I do know about The Bird Rule though.
