Atlanta Hawks at Bobcats: No. 82
1:36 pm April 13, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
Charlotte–The regular season ends anticlimactically for the Hawks tonight. They didn’t practice yesterday and I didn’t make this morning’s shootaround in Charlotte so no word on who will play and for how long. I will update pregame, in case anyone cares. . . .
PREGAME UPDATE: Hawks-Magic Game 1 is Saturday at 7 p.m. The rest of the schedule comes out later tonight.
Twin is out but his status is still a go for Saturday. “I think he will be fine,” L.D. said. “He got some work in yesterday. He came over today early and got some work in. He should be ready to go.”
Starters are Hinrich, Joe, Josh, Al and Zaza. Armstrong, Rolle and Twin are inactive.
Drew said he plans to play the starters “a few minutes.”
“I won’t have anybody in the 30s,” he said. “I will try to keep them in the low 20s.”
L.D. wasn’t talking as much about trying to use this game to gather momentum: “Just looking at what happened to the Lakers last night, Chicago had a couple of guys hurt–that’s always a fear in this particular situation. Hopefully we can get out of this game as injury-free as we can and move onto the playoffs.”
- The signing of Magnum Rolle is unrelated to Twin’s injury, which L.D. still say says is a “minor” sprain. Twin was walking around without a noticeable limp before the game on Monday. The Hawks, like a handful of teams, signed Rolle with an eye to the (possibly lockout-disrupted) summer.
- I predict that if Zaza helps the Hawks beat the Magic while leaving a trail of carnage in his wake he will become a beloved folk hero. I also predict that if the Zaza helps the Hawks forge a competitive series against the Bulls, and this in turn inspires the team to start talking about “continuing to grow the core,” then the feelings about Zaza would become bittersweet.
- Smoove, asked why opponents become so irritated by Zaza, said: “Have you seen that head?”
Now for some linkage . . .
- Sebastian Pruiti at NBA Playbook breaks down Hawks-Magic in a series of posts.
- Tom Ziller at SB Nation wonders if the Hawks can take advantage of Orlando’s high turnover rate.
- Bret LaGree at Hoopinion (accurately and depressingly) describes the futility of trying to drawn any analytical conclusions from these last four games, particularly since the task was not much easier over the first 78 games.
- HawkStr8Talk, true to form, predicts the Hawks “are not winning a playoff game, much less a playoff series” in a post at Peachtree Hoops. However, he did express a bit of joy following the reserves’ rally against the Heat and even managed some begrudging admiration for L.D.

I’m not as concerned about whether the core stays together or not. In fact, I would be interested to see what this core could do with a true rim-defending/consistently scoring center. Twin only gives us half of that.
My chief concern is that Drew be fired immediately after the season regardless of their performance in the playoffs. I’ve seen enough to know that if the Hawks have some success in playoffs it will be in spite of him.

There seems to be a bit of a debate. Many of us want us to start JT and other believe it really would not matter. I think with JT starting gives the Hawks a better bench. JT just needs to break down the offense and dish. He will get his shot blocked but in the process, he may be able to pick up a couple of fouls against Dwight. Marvin, Hinrich and Crawford along with ZaZa is a good bench. Alternate Josh and Al at PF, and we are in good shape.
Did all the starters make the trip? I think JJ,AH and JS should not even traveled. Activate everyone else and let them play. Play Marvin and even rest KH.

Everyone on this team besides ZaZa is soft as cotton candy. Damien is not bad.
This list includes Collins, who does nothing unless it’s vs. Dwight (he better be healthy and stay out of foul trouble come Saturday) and Hinrich who got owned by Mike Freakin Bibby

My concern is that the way the Hawks are playing these
last few games (which granted don`t mean anything as far as seeds, etc.) will carry over into the playoff series. Sometimes a no care attitude can be hard to turn around quick enough when it is needed. I realize some rest for the regulars is helpful after 82 games, but it seams the Hawks are carrying this approach to the extreme.

I actually think ZaZa has a very reasonable contract. We have to put him in situations where he is going against PHYSICAL players. When he goes against non-physical players, that’s when he turns into ZaZa MJ for us, which is not what we want

i would just like to say that I used to be very complimentary of the Hawks. My pessimism matches the professionalism the Hawks GM, coaches, and players have applied to the past 2 seasons. When that changes, so will my approach to the Hawks’ fortunes

TKO!
Rev in Tampa! My interpretation of ZaZa’s head size is comparable to Mike Tyson and all other opponents who incessantly complained that Evander Holyfield head – butted them. The head-butt in boxing is deemed as an illegal weapon.
I can never forget the front page image in The AJC when ZaZa went head to head with KG and The Hawks rallied to never back down in the face of defeat. Bibby also called their fans out for the futile years of paper-bagging their faces in shame of The Celtics losing teams.
Rev, another angle could be The Dennis Rodman effect of:
Getting into their heads with the wreckless elbows and hard fouls that are never over the top enough to be called flagrant.

MC . . I’ve been saying for some time now that the starting lineup the Hawks should consider rolling with, is one with Zaza at center, and Teague at PG.
Zaza, when motivated, does bring the physical skill set that we need in the middle. Teague adds the extra speed and athletic element at PG.
With Smith and Horford drifting more and more to the outside and playing less physical, and JJ unwilling or unable to draw more fouls to get to the FT line, we need specialty type players who can do the dirty work to either keep possessions alive, or supplement what the “core” doesn’t do.
Zaza does that with his physicality. Teague does that with his speed and, when confident, driving to the hole and drawing fouls.
The Hawks are definitely a “soft” team. They’ve been soft since 1997 to be honest.
Here’s an old throwback clip from the 1994 playoffs, when the Hawks were the #1 seed in the East, but was without Nique, and not a “soft” type of team.
A little “incident” happened in that series.
Some of you may recognize the names and faces in that clip. Some of the players on the other team would find themselves to be future Hawks. The clip is actually a collection of about 6 “incidents”. So if you want to fast forward to the Hawk “incident”, go to about 3:08 in the video.
This brings back memories. I remember that game.

As for tonight . . I don’t want to see JJ, Horford, or Smith on the court AT ALL. Let them rest until Saturday or Sunday.
PG – Teague
G – Hinrich
F – Marvin
PF – Powell
C – Zaza
Bench
G – Jamal ( in limited minutes . . maybe 20 )
G/F – Wilkins
F – Thomas
PF – Rolle
C – Armstrong
Let Teague play 35 – 42 minutes. Play Hinrich a lot too, to see if he can get himself back on track. Marvin, depending on how hurt he is, may only see 20 minutes as well.
This is a meaningless game, so treat it like one for our key people.

Isn’t it Funny?
Isn’t it funny how we complain about Josh’s complaining re: bad calls and how we tout that he is too emotional, so let’s trade him for whatever we can get? (3 scrubs would do nicely, and we will never win with him in a Hawks uniform .. Blah Blah).
Yet, let’s go get Dwight Howard (whom I absolutely love), who plays off the charts with technical emotions!
Who is more emotional than MJ, KG, Barkley, Kobe – et.al (and others) were/are?
Please stop with the nit-picking of Josh. He is our emotional warrior and leader and plays with more heart than all his teammates combined.
Josh cares! Without him, this team has no pulse and no heart beat.
These refs ought to be ashamed of them selves.

And, BTW stop saying Nique’ didn’t pay for some home-made suits!
This whack Rashan fella, has reportedly been shipping unsolicited sample suits and shirts to many:
Doug and Ryan Stewart (The 2 Live Stews), Ryan reported an issue of receiving “sample shirts” from Rashan unsolicited as well). Doug actually placed an order later and Ryan never did. Rashan got agressive with Ryan and suggested he should then pay him for the samples. Ryan, being offended had to straighten Rashan’s demeanor and thought processes. Allegedly, Solomon Jones and his Father had a discrepancy in the Arena Tunnel, after Solomon received these unsolicited sample suits as well, when Rashan demanded payment. And, now Nique’? Nique said he thought they were a gift!
Apparently, this wanna-be suit maker has some “skully” marketing and gangsta tactics for pushing his product. Apparently his retail shop folded due to a lack of Business Skills?
Lesson to be learned: Stop bearing gifts that you can’t afford!
If someone sent me a gift- card in the mail with a 12K credit line? Heck, I might use it too!

I have to think that so many people counting out the Hawks is a good thing. I am a firm believer in the idea that a team plays well after having to sit around for days and hear about how they are going to get killed.
Case and point: listen to the NBA Today podcast. Rick Buchar is talking about how the regular season match ups do show who is likely to win a playoff series. So, for instance, since the Heat have beaten the ‘6′ers in the regular season (3 to 0, right?) the Heat should be the heavy favorite to win that series. When the host of the podcast pointed out that the Hawks held a 3 to 1 lead on Orlando, both guys laughed. And, they laughed for a while. Buchar finally said something about there being exceptions to every rule.
I have been predicting an Orlando sweep. I not sure if that irrational fan is getting a grip on me, but I’m starting to think the Hawks will put up a fight. Maybe even win this series……wondering if I should strap my nuts to a car battery for writing that..

Not sure how long many of us can continue being enthusiastic of this team as its currently constructed. Potential, which used to keep me coming back night after night, cannot be used to describe a “veteran” team. Nor do the Hawks deserve the right to be called a veteran team, as its players slowly realize half of their potential, at the halfway point of their careers.

i can tell you why other teams don’t like zsa zsa–it’s because he actually plays like he cares. he doesn’t put up with their crap. he doesn’t let lebron go uncontested for a dunk more than 3 or 4 times without knocking him down. he’s not afraid to box someone out. he will give a hard foul when that situation arises.
say what you want about zsa zsa but in my mind he has been our best player since the all star break without question. sure opponents don’t like him because he’s the only one on our team that shows some resistance. he’s white-so they don’t like that some white guy is pushing them around either.
this kind of reminds me of when the falcons started bobby hebert–i for one hated hebert. in my mind we was a weak-armed qb that threw a ton of interceptions and everyone else said he had a lot of heart. yeah he made a pro bowl or two–because every defense in the league loved to face him. he was the best man in about 7 or 8 corner backs weddings too. they all just loved the guy–he did have a great heart–he just didn’t have an arm to go with it.
other nba players love all the hawks except zsa zsa for the same reason. they go over and hug lbj, d-wade, d-rose and all the other bandwagon players like they are the best friends–these hawks don’t seem to mind if they get beat by 30, or if lebron dunks on them 8 or nine times when their already down 20…so sure opponents love those guys–zsa zsa doesn’t when in fact-the big z is even a friend of his and he got into it with him.
learned a long time ago–once the game starts and you get between those lines–there are no friends from the opponents team–once the game or series is over than i’m ok with it.
i wish zsa zsa’s attitude would rub off on about 11 other guys.

@northcyde: “Zaza, when motivated, does bring the physical skill set that we need in the middle.”
the “when motivated” part with Zaza means “when he’s getting consistent minutes.” this is pretty obvious to me, which is why i was surprised L.D. (and Woody to a lesser extent) didn’t see it, too. you have to play Zaza to keep him into it. you’d hope a guy would be ready anyway but you have to know the psyche of your players and Zaza is prone to brooding if he’s not getting minutes. add in the fact that he’s the only decent big on the bench and there’s been no reason not to play him.

I was thinking the other day seeing how some of these players whose game is so much based now on athleticism than skills. It seems the players last 10-15 years not as skilled as before.im personally a fan of getting rid of the one and done rule in the NBA and creating a system thats kind of a combination of how the nfl and mlb do things… if you go to college… youve gotta stay there for 3 years… and if you opt to come straight outta high school… you go to the d league on like a two year contract or something… and then nba teams can pluck you out of the d league when they feel youre ready after some minimum period of time… which may be sooner for some then others… but you have the draft essentially the same… and force teams to determine whats of more use to them… obviously its not a fully fleshed out idea… but i think something like that would be a good start…

Minutes, brooding, ect go out the window now that it’s playoff time. If ZaZa can get in another head butting match and have the impact he did against the C’s a few years back all will be forgotten, till next season. Yes ZaZa can bring the physicality and toughness, but he’s not the answer. Hopefully he’ll bring it, as hopefully they all will.
I don’t see them forging the type of consistent play it’ll take to win so I’m honestly pretty down about the playoffs. I don’t know how they can’t understand they need momentum, they need to inspire fans, they needed to put it together from the All Star break forward. Instead we come limping in with the same what-if’s…..BBBBBOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM! It’ll go one way or the other. Next week will tell us the story.

LOL . . good ol Clarksville. A place ran with a small town mentality, that needs to expand their thinking in all ways, before they get overwhelmed . . much like the ASG.
The population is 132,000+ in the city as of 2010. This town/city is growing way too rapidly, and these city leaders seem like they’re 5 years behind on everything. Poor regional planning too, considering that almost 300,000 people now live within 30 miles of the city. They’re trying, but the old time small town ideas aren’t going to fly anymore
We could easily have 400,000 people in the “Metro Clarksville” area, with a projected 180,000+ just in the city by 2020. That’s unbelievable to me. And we’re definitely not ready.
Even Austin Peay is growing rapidly. 10,000+ students at that school now.
Technically, we’ll overtake Chattanooga as the 4th largest city in the state in about 5 years, although Chatt’s metro area is twice as large.

I will be glad when the hawks beat the magic and make all of your comments look so stupid. It’s funny how the team gets no respect even when they do good in their own city. I understand why Joe said what he said last year about the fans. How can you expect a team to progress and grow if all they hear is negativity and a lack of support from so called fans in Atlanta. Yes we have had hard times and yes things can be better but it sure would be nice to one day see some positivity on this blog about the hawks. What really sucks is fake fans? Been there since the early 80’s #1 hawks fan. My frustration comes from the obvious dripping talent never caring enough to try to reach their potential. I’d take the losing seasons where we jumped up and surprised someone over getting blown out by Washington. They just don’t care, so why should we? All I ask is a solid professional effort. Lose by 20 giving it your all…and I can definitely respect you. Lose by 20 with no passion and you’re just drawing a paycheck. Our team has settled for the paycheck since that first Boston Series. They play for the money, for the contract, not for the fans. Winning fans takes charisma. We have it dripping from our team…they just don’t care enough to use it.
Postseason begins Saturday. Do your part, I’ll do mine. It’s a TEAM experience. Sometimes they need tough love, not crutches for their lackluster effort.

LOL @ 60,000 people living within 1 square mile. That means no privacy, no yards, and everyone knows what you’re doing. LOL .. you couldn’t even fire up the grill, without 10,000 people knowing that you’re about to cook a steak.

“I am a firm believer in the idea that a team plays well after having to sit around for days and hear about how they are going to get killed. ”
I think this is true for most teams. I’m not so sure it applies to these Hawks. They have been getting disrespected by the local and national media all year and they have responded only by getting worse.

As far as tonight, I would hope that the entire starting lineup plus Collins gets the night off, and the Hawks roll with something resembling Teague/Jamal/Damien/Powell/Zaza as the starters with Pape Sy, Etan, Hilton, and Magnum Rolle getting plenty of minutes. It wouldn’t surprise me, though, to see LD play at least some of the starters for the first half.

This series vs the Magic is the least anticipated series while he Nuggets and OKC will get strong ratings.
Is there a team less respected in the playoffs than the one run by the ASG? The depleted Hornets are the only team at our level heading forward.
If you are hoping for success from this group, you are secretly chanting “More core years”!
Getting our arse handed to us is the only chance we have to send LD and hopefully 31 year vet Sund packing.
This season has been one of predictability a lot of times and one of shock watching the Hawks getting blown out with regularity.
For the guy who said to rest the starters, I say “unbelieveable”. Yes, let’s take a 6 game losing streak into Orlando making us ready to start clicking on the Amway court.
The true talent of this team will come out this series and I’m committed to be there for Game 3 even if we decide to promote Lester in between flights.
Vegas Odds Will probably tell you how this thing will go…….I see the Dwight-out as an epic failure and we force the Magic to a Game 5…….with 2 DNPs for Teague.
I hate to see it end like this, but to prove the ASG wrong, I can accept it.

From the NBA Playbook link:
When the Atlanta Hawks get the players moving off of the ball (an indicator whether or not they are running sets on the offensive end), they are actually a pretty tough offense to stop. The main problem with the Hawks is that they simply don’t do it enough. A pretty good indication of this is the Hawks’ success when using off ball screens. The Hawks are the 5th best team in the NBA in terms of PPP, scoring 0.963 points per possession on 47% shooting. The problem is that off ball screens that result in a shot only take place 3.9% of the Hawks’ total possessions.
If the Hawks actually ran the offense LD pictures in his head, I think they would actually be pretty good.

Too bad that Joe has regressed so badly (he only showed up in January to make the All Star team) that if he scores 18 points, people in here are amazed. I have not seen Joe score 30 in a meaningful game against a good team in ages. He will be shut down by Keith F’ing Bogans in rd 2 if we get there.

MC,
the “when motivated” part with Zaza means “when he’s getting consistent minutes.” this is pretty obvious to me, which is why i was surprised L.D. (and Woody to a lesser extent) didn’t see it, too. you have to play Zaza to keep him into it. You’d hope a guy would be ready anyway but you have to know the psyche of your players.
This was pretty obvious to most of us fans too.
The same could be said of Teague earlier in the season. LD would bring him in for 3-5 minutes, and he would play with Jamal, and Teague would look lost. But LD never thought about trying him with the starters until after Bibby got traded and he was forced to.
And what do you know, teague played much better with the starters, and even brought something different to the table.
A good HC will find the matchup that works and will maximize the use of his players. I give credit to LD for trying Twin to play Dwight, but that’s the only thing I give him credit for.

Which star will have his legacy harmed most by the 2011 postseason?
James Ham, Cowbell Kingdom: Joe Johnson. Does he have a legacy? I’m not sure, but he just got paid and I don’t see any way the Hawks are around to see Round 2. Atlanta still has a lot of talent (more than 44-win talent) and the leader of a disappointing team always takes the hit..

Actually, a bone bruise (sub-periosteal bleeding) is quite painful.
With the already chronic knee issues that thing will very, very tender and painful. It looks like a bruised apple on MRI and will make the bone weak and susceptible to further injury.
If, Andrew has a very high threshold for pain? He should be a go for the first round, but I would save him for the later rounds 2 and 3.

Cry me a river…is gas in ATL still $3.69/gal or did you hit the $3.70 mark? You will never beat me in a war of who has the most expensive gas in the U.S. I, too, did the 17 mile, 1.5 hour commute in the ATL for over 15 years and now that my sense of a reasonable cost of living is totally skewed, I will be living less than 5 miles from the office and biking in whenever I have a chance. And given the lack of professional sports in paradise, we will be sweating out the GA humidity on Sunday afternoons this summer watching Jason Heywood work his magic and sitting in the Lowlight Factory (barring a lockout) this fall grousing about how much worse the Hawks seem to have gotten over the summer. You just don’t know what you have until you have to pay for League Pass to get it back.

LOL . . it’s almost like Drew is purposely limiting Teague’s minutes in this game, for fear that he might have a real good game, and make Hinrich look even worse.
Somebody in this organization isn’t telling all they know about this LD – Teague situation. There’s something going on. I said back in November that I thought LD just didn’t like Jordan Crawford. Now I’m starting to think the same thing about he and Teague.

And it’s time to stop calling Drew “Woody Lite”.
Drew is nothing like Woody. That Sekou radio interview the other day pretty much stated that Woody was a “hard azz” on the players, while Drew is “laid back”.
Woody would make guys on this team uncomfortable when they didn’t do what he wanted them to do. I’ve yet to see Drew give Josh, or JJ, or even Teague one of those “Woody WTF” type faces.

No it’s called belief confirmation bias.
You think Teague is a great defender, so you confirm this by focusing on what (or when) he does well and by discounting what (or when) he doesn’t do well.
You believe Kirk is a horrible defender, so you confirm this by focusing on what (or when) he does well and by discounting what (or when) he doesn’t do well.
Your post above justifying your criticism of Kirk, but a free pass for Teague is but another example of this.

I can partially agree with what you are saying. I am just so tired of people saying Kirk is horrible, but Teague is great, but on the whole, this simply isn’t true.
Now if you want to say, given what we gave up for Kirk, he has disappointed. Given that Teague is still early in his development, he is showing great promise, then saying this is fine. [I actually fully believe this to be the case.]

I actually believed Kirk was a good defender when he was acquired by trade. After the win over Chicago I was convinced he was going to be a defensive difference maker. Since then he has played poorly on defense, and for the first couple of weeks he did that I was making excuses for him. After a point, though, what you see is what you get, and letting Bibby drive by you on multiple occasions does not a good defender make.
As for Teague, honestly, I don’t know what to tell you. If watching him apply consistent ball pressure over the last couple of months whenever he has entered the game, or the fact that he’s tied for the 2nd best defensive rating on the team, or the fact that the Hawks’ by far best defensive five-man unit has Teague at point guard doesn’t sway you, I don’t know what will.

Being honest:
Earlier in the season, I was one of the few Teague-doubters. However, I have liked what Teague has shown (for the most part) since the All Star break, and I am now on the “get Teague solid minutes every game” band wagon.
I’ve also been one that has thought Kirk would have been a good pick up for this team (and have pushed for the Hawks to consider trading for him since this summer). (Let’s be clear, though, I never said I thought Kirk was going to solve the Hawks problems. I just thought he was an obtainable PG that would provide at least a small (but noticeable) improvement to the Hawks.) However, I, too, have been disappointed with Kirk over the past week or so. To be honest, it is not clear that Kirk is bringing any meaningful improvement to the Hawks … but the first round playoff series against the Magic will really be the judge of this.

I just said enough about Kirk, but I cannot stay away.
You are actually 100% right. Kirk prefers to go under screens against the more explosive, fast PGs in the league. He rather force them to make their jumpshots. In that first game, Rose wasn’t making his jumpshots, so it made Kirk’s defense look superb. In the next meeting Rose was hitting everything, making Kirk’s defense look bad. … but to be honest, I thought his defense was decent on both of those games (not great, maybe not even good, but decent), despite the disparate outcomes. That’s why I was not willing to call Kirk out after the second Chi game, but over the last two/three games Kirk has looked fairly bad.

This proves what most of us were saying before the game even started. It’s entirely pointless to play the starters at all in this game. It’s clear they are not into the game, and who would even expect them to be? Al, Joe, and Josh should have been in street clothes tonight. There was absolutely nothing to be accomplished by playing them minor minutes in a losing effort. It might make a tiny bit of sense if the team was playing well right now, and Drew played the starters regular minutes and they focused on blowing Charlotte out so that they could rest for the final quarter. A win in this game might make Drew feel like he accomplished something, but playing the starters just for the sake of having them enter the game in a blowout loss is just pointless and stupid. It’s almost like Drew is just praying for an injury to occur so that he’ll have an excuse for why the team gets annihilated in the playoffs. What a pathetic excuse for a head coach. Any intelligent head coach would have just played the bench in this game, knowing the Hawks current situation.

Agreed, the last few weeks have been horrible for Kirk. At the time of that bulls game though, I want really upset with kirk, just LD (I beleive that Teague was starting the game before that one). As soon as JT went to the bench, that renewed sence of vigor the hawks had after the trade was gone.

You can’t really blame him. It is his nephew, after all. What is sickening is when he unfairly criticizes others (e.g. Teague), while making Damien look like a superstar. It’s fine to be a cheerleader for your team, but if you want to cheer for one guy who is mediocre, then you should be cheering for the mediocre teammates as well. Be consistent.

That’s is what I am worried about. Well, that and the fact that other elite or near-elite teams will probably be willing to offer DeAndre MLE money. If DeAndre ends up being offered the same dollars from Atlanta and, say, Boston, Orlando, or Miami, then it is difficult to see him passing up the same money from more “prestigious” organizations. (I am not sure if ‘prestigious’ is the right word here, but you get the point.)

That Thunder bandwagon has a spot ready for you whenever you are ready to make the jump. Could you really stand to not watch Josh anymore though? I mean, after all, he is the love of your life. I think one thing to consider is that DeAndre being a young player is probably going to prioritize playing time over joining an elite team. I would think Orlando, in particular, would be off his list, seeing as how he won’t be able to start there. I could definitely see how Miami would be a good fit for both him and the team though. The thought of a shot blocking presence like him playing center for them, to be honest, is a little scary.

I didn’t think the Hawks would win 53 games the way they did last year, but I didn’t expect the regression to be this significant. It just seems like this entire season has been a failure across the board. I can’t think of one positive thing that has come out of this season, other than maybe Joe and Al making the all-star team, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t even think Joe deserved to make that team. It’s one thing to get called out by someone who regularly posts here, but for some dude who is otherwise never heard from to come here and sob and whine that I give props to Smoove on occasion is quite amusing.

Wow! And Whew! The most horrifically coached season I have ever witnessed on any level at any sport (and that’s saying something) is finally over. The players like JJ and Jamal know, judging by their comments, that LD is a total disaster. They are not planning on listening to LD it seems, and will try to salvage the playoffs themselves.
I predicted 46-36 before the season, and said 44-38 would be a total meltdown, worst case scenario unless we had Portland like injuries or something to justify it.
I think we will play Orlando tough, but probably lose in 4 straight unless they have injuries or something.
It’s weird, I always want the Hawks to win. But I almost want them to lose 0-4 so LD will get fired. But I also don’t trust ASG/Sund. He’s liable to stay even at that.
I just couldn’t bring myself to blog about this total disaster of a team and season the last couple of weeks….depressing.
And we traded JC2 and the #17 pick or something like that, when all we had to do was either fire LD, or make him play Teague 20-25 mpg. We did neither, now we have Hinrich, who must be hurt I’m assuming (surely he can’t be worse than Bibby can he?) and no future until we bring in Adelman, Brown or somebody decent who can Coach.

O’Brien – Certainly almost no one on this blog, when it was suggested that the Bulls had leapfrogged the Hawks. The epitaphs rained hot and heavy saying only an idiot would say that adding Boozer and a couple of shooting G’s, Asik, and having Noah, Rose, and Gibson a year older made them better than the Hawks.
Guess the cumulative blogosphere wisdom was wrong on that one.
My preseason went
1) Miami
2) Orlando

5) Bucks – I blew that one

Of course we could have used Etan this season. But we have a terrible coach, who is overmatched worse than any I can ever remember.
And those that have seen my posts on other sites, you know I’m very patient with Coaches:
1) I thought Hewitt still had a shot after the first UNC game, and the young talent he had assembled.
2) Backed Richt, Donnan, and Goff
3) Thought Tech was stupid for firing Chan
4) Thought Dennis Felton deserved 1 more year
5) Wouldn’t have been mad if Woody had been retained. I was 50/50 on that one.
The point being, when I think a Coach is done, after having been a Coach, he must be absolutely awful. Which LD has been.
LD hasn’t just been awful. He’s been vindictive, irrational. My vocabulary is not extensive enough to describe his awfulness as the Head Coach of the Hawks. Indescribably bad.

SteveW,
You expressed EXACTLY what I am feeling about Drew. I have never seen a worse coached team on any level in any sport. And he never has assumed any blame for any loss. It used to be that the players get credit for the win and coaches take the blame for the loss – when character mattered. But in blowout after blowout and 4th quarter meltdown after 4th quarter meltdown Drew would make some comment about the players that made it seem as if he was just an observer from the stands.
Drew has no character. He said all the right things to MC in the interviews but did not follow through with the really difficult decisions. How much did we hear about making players accountable?
It dawned on me when the 4th quarter started and Pape Sy had not seen the court in a completely meaningless game that Drew only cares about Drew. I understand that professional athletes get paid their money to sit on the bench if the coach decides to give a DNP-CD, but why not give a young man some playing time in a game like tonight? Players respond to a coach who leads them, pushes them to excel, and cares for them.
Somebody said that Drew looked like an UNDERTAKER in his brown suits and sour demeanor. The name fits him.

Pump – Faked!
I’m at the Q-Trip gas pump and just filled my hog for $80.
This little white guy just came over and said, “Mam can I have $5 for some gas? I have a car full of little kids and we don’t have enough gas to make it home.” I looked back and saw the little kids sad faces and gave him $10 for at least 2.5 gals., he goes inside , runs out and drives off w/o any gas. I backed up to his pump and it read $58.95.
I go back inside and asked Mark, “What did that guy in the red Tee purchase?”. Mark said, “2 packs of Kools.” Now, I feel like a jack-azz. My stomach hurts. I hope that guy runs out of gas and die of lung cancer, before he gets home. Next time, I will go inside pre-pay for his gas.

Lesson learned. Beware of the: “cigarettes-for-gas” hustle at these pumps. He pump-faked me at the three point line and drove to the basket for a poster dunk! I feel like a Hawk in the post!

Rev – I agree totally about Sy tonight. Man I’m depressed and confused about the Hawks.
Best case scenario – LD resigns tonight, Adelman or somebody is fired tonight and we get Rick A. or Mike Brown to Coach us in the playoffs. Then I would feel totally comfortable rooting for them they way I want to.

I think what gets me most is that I follow the Hawks as my outlet from a stessful job. But observing Drew’s stubborn incompetence is anything but relaxing.

Reading everybodys comments on the blog is always enjoyable even if the Hawks are stinking it up on the court.

I wonder if any team has ever gone into the playoffs on a six game losing streak.
The silver lining, hopefully, is that ticket prices for these playoffs games go down to the point where lower level seats for these playoff games start going for $20. Already 100-level seats are under $50 on Stubhub.
***********************
Quick glance at the ticketmaster.com website in which you can actually pick your seat . . it looks like about 2,000 – 3,000 tickets available on that site. But like you said, it may be quite a few people ( season ticket holders ) looking to sell their tickets at lower prices on other sites, especially if we lose the first 2 games.
Game 3 on next Friday . . Game 4 on next Sunday.
I usually play it safe and go the ticketmaster route, but I may have to check out stubhub, if I can get a 100 level tix for $50.
If we go up 2 – 0 coming back home, Game 3 will be pretty live. If we come home 0 – 2 . . we may not sell out the game.
We’re playing the right team though. Magic fans won’t take over our arena, even if we do only have 12,000 Hawk fans in attendance. It would be a different story for the other 3 top seeds.

LOL drmaryb . . . God will give you that money back, and then some. Your heart was in the right place, so you will be rewarded when you least expect it.
As for the Hawks . . the “core” needs to play at the highest level possible. If we can continue to keep Howard in check, we have a shot. What we don’t need, is for one of the other Orlando people going off on us . . like an Arenas or Richardson or somebody.
We’re winning defensive, low scoring battles vs Orlando. So if the defense is sound, we’ll be right there. I just want to see us come back to Philips at least tied at 1 game a piece. If that happens, I like our chances to take the series.
