Atlanta Hawks: Heat 98, Hawks 90

  • A lineup of Teague, Jamal, Damien, Josh Powell and Zaza played the entire fourth quarter and nearly beat a Heat crew that included LeBron for 12 minutes, D-Wade for 10 and Bosh for 6.
  • That’s an aberration but it also was the kind of spirited play that’s been missing since the Hawks beat Boston. The Hawks had been searching for something good in these meaningless games and finally got it.
  • Still, is the play of the bench in this game going to mean more for Atlanta’s series vs. Orlando than the play of the starters over the last three games? The guys that play the most minutes got drilled by the Heat two nights after they couldn’t put down Washington’s D-Leaguers.
  • At least nobody got hurt. “The main thing is to be healthy because that’s been our Achilles’ heel the last two years,” Smoove said.
  • Marvin played 19 (productive and efficient minutes) and Josh logged 24 (pretty good, especially on the offensive boards, but for a couple untimely turnovers) minutes.
  • Josh said the knee came out OK. “It feels all right,” he said. “It might be a little sore tomorrow. There was a little bumping and it was physical. I will ice it and take my time with it. For the most part I felt comfortable. I had to get my timing down in that first half but when I finally got it in the second half it felt good.”
  • L.D. said he never considered sending his starters back in and can’t say I blame him. The bench guys were simply better tonight.
  • The fourth-quarter crew was 8 of 14 in the paint. The Hawks were 13 of 25 from that range in the other three quarters.
  • Sometimes it’s better to be good than deep. The Heat’s All-Star trio outscored the Hawks 49-46 in the first half and tallied 70 for the game. That nullified Atlanta’s a 44-14 advantage in bench scoring.
  • Bibby came in clearly motivated and outplayed Hinrich. It’s one thing for Hinrich to struggle to stay with Lowry and Parker, something else to let Bibby get to the rim more times in one game than he did in the previous 17 with the Heat.
  • That’s not an exaggeration.
  • Hinrich was no better offensively, either. By my recollection, all but one of his six missed shots were clean looks. He just doesn’t look comfortable out there and his body language was bad tonight.
  • L.D. mentioned the other day that he would have liked to give Hinrich a break and he sure looks like he’s aged a lot in like three weeks. If that’s the case, then it’s just another reason for Teague to get more burn (and, yes, it’s a problem that the Hawks are still trying to figure things like this out in Game 81).
  • I thought the Hawks moved the ball well in the second quarter (8 for 16 field goals, 5 assists) but the Heat turned up the D and didn’t allow anything easy. At the same time the Heat made 4 of their 5 long 2-point jumpers and scored nine points off five Hawks turnovers.
  • The Heat were just 1 for 4 on long jumpers in the third quarter and 0 for 5. They scored 17 points in the third and 19 in the fourth. “Their reserves came in with a lot of energy and they went to the zone and that confused us at first,” LeBron said.
  • Powell was a team-high plus-5 in 23 minutes and scored on a tip dunk and another dunk on a pass from Zaza to pull the Hawks within 86-85. He also set up a Damien basket with an offensive rebound.
  • “I thought J.P. came in and gave us some muscle down low, some energy down low,” Drew said. “I thought he played with a physicality.”
  • But before that good sequence Powell wiped out a Teague layup with a goaltend. Down the stretch he missed a 20-footer, had his shot blocked by D-Wade, fouled James Jones for a 4-point play on a late closeout in the zone defense and was called for charging with the Hawks down 96-90.
  • The Heat’s stars got some suspect calls but the Hawks can’t complain too much when they got Miami’s bigs in foul trouble, earned 21 free-throw attempts and made just 12. Josh, Al and Zaza were 4 of 11 combined.
  • Zaza ticked off yet another opponent. This time it was Big Z, whom he considers a good friend. “I am definitely going to call him,” Zaza said. “Or maybe text him, because he might not answer.”
  • It didn’t appear that Zaza did anything dirty on the play that preceded Big Z chucking the ball at him but Big Z said Zaza hit him the face on an earlier possession. “That was a lot of contact between that particular player and our guys all night but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” Erik Spoelstra said.
  • The flip side of the Hawks competing better with their bench guys is that the Heat had to go all out to win against that group. Is this really a team that can take the Celtics in a series?
  • Joel Anthony surely must be tired of getting dunked on by Smoove.

We can trade KH in the offseason (His Contract will be very attractive). I like that PG coming out of BYU, he was a beast. Sharron collins in nice as well. Ben Hansbrough may be in the second round also.

I am still frustrated by the Hinrich trade. It is looking worse by the day. I posted this from last night…

“JC2…8-18 FGA, 17 pts, 6 assists, 5 turnovers, 2 rebs, in 45 minutes of PT”

Hinrich…0-6 FGA, 1 pt, 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 0 rebs, in 17 minutes of PT

Jordan’s below 50% shooting is starting to look pretty good compared with what we’re gettng in exchange.

I stated when we made the trade that Kirk Hinrich was washed up. I said he has been a backup, and not even playing the point for the last three years for a reason. I was told by some on the blog that the only reason that Kirk was not starting was because of Derrick Rose, and John Wall. Will those who argued with me now admit they were wrong. Kirk Hinrich actually is not better than Bibby. At first I thought he was better defensively, but I have not seen it as a Hawk. He has been outplayed badly by almost every above average point guard that we have played since he has been here. He can’t stop penetration, can’t penetrate, can’t hit wide open shots, and he looks nervous running the team, and he truns the ball over more than Bibby. I have not seen any of this high IQ stuff, and he was supposed to come here and get this bunch in line. He has been another joke, just like Speedy Claxton was. Hopefully all this toughness, grit, high basketball IQ and leadeership will show up in the playoffs. I have not been a huge Teague supporter, but at this point, he is much better option than Hinrich, especially since we are player against Jameer.

I wish someone (and I’m not saying that you haven’t), but I wish the media at-large would really hammer LD on this Teague situation. I mean, the guy has clearly outplayed KH at almost every turn and LD continues contradict himself as much as he can regarding Teague.

This has turned out to be the most baffling coaching decision with regards to usage of player personnel that I’ve seen in quite sometime. There has almost got to be some underlying ill-will towards Teague from the coach, or somewhere in the organization. Nothing else at this point seems to even come close to explaining it.

MistaGamer,

Here is one of MC’s blogs where he tried to pin Coach Drew down on why he doesn’t play Teague more minutes back in December. At least two more times in January MC asked the same questions rather persistently before throwing up his arms in frustration and told us he did not know what Drew was telling him. Drew has always spoken with a forked-tongue when it comes to Teague.

My thoughts are the same as my post from yesterday. LD is a poor excuse for a coach. I thought Woody had some serious coaching issues, but he at least got this team to improve with each year. This guy doesn’t have a clue. The same problems we were having at the start of the season are the same problems we have now. Although the bench played great for 9 of the 12 minutes in the fourth quarter, I feel that the players that get paid the most should be earning their paychecks. There have been too many games this year where the Hawks have either been winning or the game was close and LD would play his bench until the lead was pushed to double digits. He runs plays for Josh Smith to shoot three point jumpers, when Josh should be closer to the basket to help with rebounding and paint scoring. Joe is too slow to be running isolation plays and just dribble the ball for 19 seconds and end up shooting an illadvised shot at the end of the shot clock. LD shows no intensity on the sidelines which is probably his team shows none on the court in crucial situations. Is the best he can do on the sideline is stick his fingers in his mouth and whistle? I am clueless to why the Hawks organization thought it needed to give Joe all of that money and bring him back after that disappearing act he pulled in the playoffs last year. Jamal should have been given more money and made a starter, because he was the reason we were where we were anyway. Joe has done even less since getting the new contract. I am a true Atlanta fan of all of the Atlanta sports teams, and it really drives me crazy to see my teams underacheive when they have so much potential. I have been with my Atlanta teams in the years where all of them were foot stools of their respective leagues, and I would hate to see those years again. Somebody please talk Dominuqe into coaching this team. I have always thought he would be the best choice if he had any interest at all. If not we need something other than LD.

For those thinking that Mike is better than Kurt,………………please. Regardless of what you all are thinking Kurt is three times the defender of Bibby, and he shoots just as well. If Bibby wasn’t hitting his shots he was just in the way. Can somebody tell me how many meaningful threes Bibby hit in a clutch situation? Don’t get it twisted, Bibby may have had a decent 3pt pct., but most of his threes are made early in games. In late game situations Bibby was non exsistant. He was great as a King, but he is far from his prime. What the Hawks need to do is get a true center, bring Josh inside the 3pt line, put Crawford at point and start him, and find another 2 guard that likes showing up in the playoffs.

I don’t agree or disagree, but please inform me what you are basing your opinion on. Since Kirk has been an Atlanta Hawk, what has he done to make you think that he is three times the defender that Bibby is. I personally can’t remember a bunch of games in a row like this, that the other teams starting point guards have outplayed starting point guard this badly. I think that most of you base your “Hinrich is a great defender” on what you heard, and not what you have seen with the Hawks. He has been just as bad defensively as Bibby, since he has been here. Again, I’m actaully not stating that Bibby is a better individual defender than Hinrich, but from what I have seen, the team defense was better with Bibby. I guess all those years of knowing you have to help Bibby, have been hard to adjust to.

Fact: I don’t miss Mike Bibby and his departure is not missed.
Fact: Kirk better defensively and still doesn’t play well with this group.
Fact: Bibby can hide on defense with the Heat better than here.
Fact: Marvin isn’t worth anything offered in ANYONE’s previous comments. He and Zaza are Bibby-esque….worth much less on the open market and we have to move an ‘asset’ also for someone to trade with us.

Fact: for you JC2 lovers, he was a wasted asset being on this team….we are ’stacked’ in PFs and SGs and none of them will get us to improve our weaknesses. We will just inherit other teams’ weaknesses.

Fact: re: Jameer being in the Finals once before….he didn’t get his team there that year, it was Rafer Alston, who I wanted in here a long time ago, but too late now. Jameer comes back from injury and starts Game 1 of the Finals, and that switch in on Van Gundy. He may never get another Finals shot. The Lakers were not unbeatable that year.

Fact: if LD comes back, it may be time to seriously consider moving this franchise to another city willing to watch the lethargic effort these guys put on throughout the season….just please, take Sund with you…..he is stealing money!

Rod, be for real. How long has Bibby been in Atlanta? When has he ever held any point guard in check, or kept one in front of him. Come on now, Atlanta’s defense at that position has always been suspect, we have always been at a miss match. Kurt may not be having the best offensive put out recently, but he just got here, and he is still a better defender hands down.

Rufus1

I agree with you that Kirk can’t guard the PG position any longer, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a solid defender of 2nd unit players and some SG. Bibby couldn’t guard anyone. I think LD is using him wrong and it is making him look worse than he is and it is effecting his offense. Kirk should be coming of the Bench with Jamal and Marvin.

All I have to say is this, if Atlanta doesn’t get J SMOOVE inside the 3pt line, get Joe to make a hearted appearance in the playoffs, other players taking good shots and not passing them up for Joe to throw up a prayer as the shot clock buzzer sounds, LD starts coaching the team and stop just watching the game like a fan, and do a better job in when his starters should be on the floor, and our major players play with some heart, and play like they actually want to win. We will get killed in the first round.

I concur…bring starter off the bench. The starters are the very ones who did the big hole. Lenny Wilkins won a championship in Seattle bringing the starters off the bench.

Watching our bench play that 4th quarter reminded me of why I like basketball. They flat out competed against the best team money can buy. It was fun to watch. Also, I observed our starters were on their feet cheering the entire 4th quarter prior to Jones busting up our zone at the end. I can’t remember seeing our bench guys on their feet the entire time cheering our starters with that same intensity. Would love to see the STARTERS take that intensity to the floor.

LD should start: Teague, Crawford, Wilkins, Twin, Horford against Orlando. Play the remaining starters from the bench. We would have defense & rebounding at the beginning of the game and Jamal can be Jamal on the offensive end.

Food for thought LD…job on the line anyway!!!

I don’t think LD has the stones to play Jeff Teague, not because he doesn’t know what we all know about Teague vs. Hinrich, but because if he does give the nod to Teague over a supposed upgrade over Bibby, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t look so good in the eyes of management.

Truthfully, I don’t think he’s looking any good as it is. But, considering what Sund did to get Hinrich, giving up a promising young talent + a future 1st round pick, there’s no way LD can spin starting Teague now vs. when Bibby was around. Thus, you have the situation we’re in.

LD doesn’t start Teague or give him more minutes than Kirk because he’ll come out looking like a big loser. Truth is, he’s already proving to be a big loser because Teague’s showing in his limited minutes that he’s more than capable of performing at a higher level than Bibby was and that Hinrich currently is. But, LD can’t admit to that, especially with Jordan Crawford down in Washington ballin’. Management would be infuriated that they gave up all of this when the solution that LD’s gonna go with to resolve our PG woes was on our roster the whole time?

Exactly, KH should be playing with the second unit. You get more “bang for your buck” with Teague playing with the 1st unit and KH playing with the second unit, than the other way around. But, then again as some folk would say “that would be too much like right!”

Teague’s defense, speed, and athleticism is a greater asset to our atheletic 1st unit than our 2nd. KH’s defense and offense helps more with our less productive 2nd than our 1st. At least we wouldn’t have to use Jamal as a pg, something I wish would cease immediately.

Bibby had a 105.02 defensive rating as a Hawk . . probably because the rest of the guys covered for him so well. His offensive rating was 108.66

Bibby currently has a 112.28 defensive rating with the Heat, and a 115.91 offensive rating

That’s a +3.64 overall rating with Atlanta and a +3.63 overall rating with Miami

While in Atlanta, the Hawks were SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER with Bibby on the court, than off the court ( -3.88 off the court ). In Miami, the Heat are better with Bibby off the court ( +8.83 )

*************************

Hinrich had a 110.79 defensive rating, and a 101.19 offensive rating with the Wizards

He currently has a 108.65 defensive rating, and a 99.32 offensive rating with the Hawks

That’s an on the court -9.60 overall rating with the Wizards and a -9.33 overall rating with the Hawks

The Wizards were slightly better with Hinrich off the court, than on the court ( -7.30 ). The Hawks are SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE with Hinrich on the court, than on the court. Off the court, the Hawks have a +1.07 overall rating
