Atlanta Hawks: Practice report

Adding to the notebook that appears in print . . .

  • Al is of the mind that if he’s going to play, he might as well play his regular role: “We need to stay sharp. Being honest, one game sitting out, I don’t think it’s a bad idea. Especially Joe; he has little nick-nacks. He is not going to say anything but I know it would be good for him to get some rest. But at the same time we need to be in rhythm so I can understand why [L.D.] maybe just wants to reduce minutes. But we are still trying to win games.”
  • Twin and Smoove also suggested Joe is hurting more than he’s letting on, which obviously wouldn’t be the first time. Both mentioned the elbow could still be an issue. J.J. still frequently ices the right thumb.
  • Josh on he and Joe playing with nagging injuries: “Certain people have a high threshold for pain. We’d rather be out there playing than dealing with that training table and rehab. I think that’s more of a pressure. You really do more things doing that than on the court. So you’d rather be out there helping the team and contributing. But we understand that right now we have to get healthy. Especially Joe because he’s our offensive leader.”
  • Josh said he would play Monday against the Heat: “That’s a good game to come back to.”
  • Twin on the ankle: I will be all right. Injuries are a part of the game. I will be OK. I have had lots of sprained ankles in my basketball career and this is another one on the list.”
  • L.D. on his reaction to Twin going down: “I was very concerned. I am just glad that he got right back up. We all know that he is going to be a very important piece in the first round against Orlando, as all of my bigs will be. We hope we can keep guys as injury-free as we possibly can.”
  • Drew on the Hawks being two games shy of the franchise record for road Ws: “I was not aware of that but I think our team has accomplished some things on the road. We’ve shown spots of showing how to play on the road and with some consistency. These last four games I don’t want to change anything. I want to do what’s been good to us: control tempo, take care of the basketball, and the shot selection has to be good. Normally when we do all three of those things, that’s been the big reasons we’ve had success on the road.”
  • Drew on the Teague-Hinrich backcourt: “I like it. With both of those guys out there, in Jeff I have speed, I have quickness and a guy that can really get up and harass the ball. That’s one of his strengths defensively. Offensively, [it's] his ability to get in the paint. So any combination with Jeff out there with Jamal or Kirk or even Joe I think it’s good for us. From what I have seen, both Jeff and Kirk play off each other pretty well, too. So that’s something we could see down the stretch.”
  • Teague on playing alongside Hinrich: “It’s a lot easier. Defensively, you know he’s going to have your help and I am going to have his back. He’s easy to play with. He passes the ball and gets everybody involved. It makes your job a lot easier when you know a guy is willing to give up the ball. He’s a good player.”

If LD does not give Teague substantial minutes to put pressure on Nelson, the series will be short.

Hinrich will not be able to chase Nelson all the time every single game.

We definitively need to give Nelson different defensive looks and keep fresh legs on him.

Vecsey:

“… The remaining half have given notice (Phil Jackson), are on unspoken notice should their teams fail to meet expectations, or are in jeopardy to be served evictions notices.

Virtually guaranteed to go are Pistons’ John Kuester, Timberwolves’ Kurt Rambis, Hawks’ Larry Drew (unless team pulls a first round upset and even then I see it), Pacers Frank Vogel (same-same), Warriors’ Keith Smart, Wizards’ Flip Saunders and Raptors’ Jay Triano, particularly if Bryan Colangelo doesn’t get a new deal…and maybe even if he does despite adhering to agreed-upon plan by those in charge to play almost exclusively young.”

[...] Jason Collins told Michael Cunningham of the AJC that the ankle will be just fine: “I will be all right. Injuries are a part of the game. I will be OK. I have had lots of sprained ankles in my basketball career and this is another one on the list.” [...]

@Doc

Fifteen almost assuredly will be back with their current team—Gregg Popovich, George Karl, Nate McMillan, Doug Collins, Tom Thibodeau, Scott Skiles, Lionel Hollins, Avery Johnson, Scott Brooks, Paul Silas, Monty Williams, Byron Scott, Alvin Gentry, Vinny Del Negro and Ty Corbin.

The remaining half have given notice (Phil Jackson), are on unspoken notice should their teams fail to meet expectations, or are in jeopardy to be served evictions notices.

Paul Westphal, not that he deserves to be fired, he might have saved his Kings (Royals?) job by winning some games the last couple of weeks, Fact is, he ought to get a raise for hiving to put up every day with the antics of DeMarcus Cousins.

We’ve already mentioned D’Antoni’s uncertain circumstances. Rick Adelman, in spite of a superlative showing minus Yao Ming, is giving no indication he wants back with the Rockets. Your guess is as good as mine regarding what happens to Erik Spoelstra (Heat), Stan Van Gundy (Magic), and Rick Carlisle (Mavericks) should their respective teams distribute playoff shares in April, early May or even later in the month.

If LD doesn’t come back, what was the greatest factor…

A)Teagues’ lack of development
B)JC2/ 1st rd draft pick trade
C)Josh Shooting more Jumpers and not blocking shots
D)Lack of accountability

****All of the above is excluded****

I pick “A”. If we would have developed Teague, “B” would have never happened.

if that many are going then we better move quickly if a good coach is wanted. two things get in the way of that and one should prob be one and two, the askg. it might be the first indication of a lock out with salaries jettisoned of any and all coaches not under a hard contract. surely the askg wont keep coaches and pay them if there is no one to coach in the near future and fairly reasonable for their present apparant financial ills.

LD was hired because of money. For the same reason, I don’t see him getting fired barring a complete collapse against Orlando (which of course is always possible).

He just cost the ownership millions with the JC2 trade.

2mil more for Kirk, 3mil(They could have sold) for the 1st rd draft pick and the 2-3mil for new player they will need to sign to replace JC2. Also, the empathy created by his lack of success…That is atleast 10mil. They have to fire LD because the empathy will get worse if we don’t make it to the ECF and that will cost more than his salary in attendance.

I am a small business owner and I would fired LD because I am cheap. I would cut my loses.

@Melvin: “What about Pape? Did LD mention rather he will play over the next 4 games. Have you seen him play in pratice? If so, what do you think of him?”

LD didn’t mention Pape but i didn’t ask. i don’t get to see much of the scrimmaging in practice and they haven’t done much of it late in the season anyway.

@Rev in Tampa- We look at the Wilkins trade different. It wasnt a trade, it was a Dominique and Deon Sanders had to get out of Atlanta trade. They were both involved with a guy name Fred Tokars who was a crime figure in Atlanta. He was most noted for having his wife killed. The Hawks didnt want to give up Nique and the Falcons didnt want to let Sanders go. It was out of there hands. This is inside info.

@James on Pharr: “MC Who draws the offensive plays for the HAWKS? Do we have a Defensive coach on this team?”

all of the assistants have input on plays to use but ultimately it’s L.D.’s system and his call on what gets used. the Hawks don’t have a designated “defensive coach” but when he hired Conner Drew said that’s the area he would offer input.

Kirk/Joe/Marvin/Al/Zaza, according to MC’s Twitter.

“Al is a very very good player.

He just needs a real HC to put him back on track and stop his recent sissy approach to the game.

A good HC (Thibodeau) makes soft guys man up (various guys in the CHI roster were softies).

A bad HC (LD) turned a “Boss” into a “Madam”.”

This is the best post I’ve seen on this blog (no offense to anyone else). I just think it’s so very, very true. People do not realize what a dramatic impact a coach has upon a team. A good coach can totally change the mindset, and as a result, change the habits and play of a team.

Whether people want to admit it or not, L.D. is responsible for many of the team’s biggest issues that I typically hear people complaining about.

Take a look at this post on Peachtree Hoops: http://www.peachtreehoops.com/2011/4/6/2093989/the-biggest-problem-with-the-2010-11-hawks

The author sums up a lot of L.D.’s negative impacts on the team pretty well. I almost couldn’t have said it better myself.

“If Teague and KH start and he plays well over the next four games I wonder what LD will do….”

This is easy to answer. If that happens, L.D. will reward Teague with DNP-CDs in the playoffs. It’s not about production with L.D., it’s about favoritism and the number of years you’ve been in the league.
