Atlanta Hawks: Practice report

Pausing during a ‘Nique-heavy day for some late afternoon notes . . .

  • The Hawks had a light practice session today.
  • J.J. on the thumb: “A little sore but for the most part it feels OK. I shot well [today], actually. It’s going to be one of those things that pretty much lingers. I am never going to have enough time to rest it for it to heal up.”
  • Smoove on the knee: “It feels good. I just need to rest it whenever I can and try to keep taking care of it.”
  • Al says the hamstring isn’t an issue. He said he gets “maintenance” treatment for the ankle: “The ankle is the one that is still real sore, especially last night [after] I played a lot of minutes. Besides the ankle, I feel fine.”
  • L.D. said Twin got treatment for some swelling in his knee.
  • After three consecutive solid outings, do the Hawks think they’ve turned the corner and can keep this roll going?
  • Drew: “I still want some more. I’m not ready to say that yet. I see signs but I am waiting on us to put together a series of wins against teams like the Orlandos, the Bostons, and the San Antonios. See if we can play with that consistency.”
  • Smoove: “I think so. There’s really no turning back now for this ball club. We’ve been playing hard for the past three games and there is no excuse as to why we can’t do that for every game here on out and through the postseason.”
  • Al: “I think we are getting there. I don’t think we are there yet. I feel like we have had better outings. We are starting to stick together more out there. It is encouraging to see.”
  • J.J.: “Our defense has been the difference. That’s been it. Defensively we have been hitting on all cylinders regardless of what our offense is doing. We’ve brought it defensively and we need to continue to get better and carry that over to the playoffs.”
  • Much of the chatter about the Nique incident among players centered on the police mugshot of the accused assailant posted at ajc.com. “The results wasn’t pretty,” J.J. said.
  • Al: “It’s unfortunate that something would go down here [at the arena]. We just have to be aware of things like that, I guess. It’s a good thing we have team security, I know that much.”
  • TMZ.com posted a (shaky, low-quality) video of the incident.
  • The Hawks have told ‘Nique not to comment.
  • Josh on lobbying L.D. to send Twin back in vs. Dwight in the fourth quarter: “Al does a pretty good job on bigs in this league but we really wasn’t double teaming because we didn’t want to give up the open jump shot. The way [Dwight] was scoring down and the play [Twin] was giving us the whole game we needed him in the lineup to give us a little bit more resistance”
  • Dwight thought Twin should have been called for a flagrant when he wrapped him around the shoulders.
  • Twin disagreed: “I’ve committed plenty of flagrant fouls in my career but I don’t think any of those were flagrant. I think a couple of them definitely were hard fouls. The one where I wrapped his shoulders, he’s so strong you just don’t want to give up an and-1. On that one, he hadn’t even jumped yet so it’s not like I snatched him out of the air.”
  • SI.com’s Rob Mahoney, filling in for Zach Lowe, warns against getting too carried away by Hawks’ success vs. Magic with big lineup.
  • But John Hollinger, writing for ESPN.com’s Daily Dime, calls Twin the “Superman Stopper” and thinks his work against Dwight means “we’re looking at a genuinely competitive series” between the Hawks and Magic.
  • Shaq won’t play tomorrow and may not be back until the playoffs.
  • L.D. said he most likely would go back to the “regular” lineup vs. the C’s: “At the five spot, Krstic is good but I think we can match up pretty good with him with our regular lineup. I haven’t made a decision yet but I’m leaning that way.”

First of all Nique I hope all is well with you man. I see that dude didnt know who he was messing with. Now back to the Hawks. TO ALL MY BLOGERS- I have never seen a coach that received so much hatred as I have seen yall give Drew. You grade papers at the end of the test. Therefore lets grade him after the season is over. This is his first year and yall are treating him as though he has been the head coach for ten years. Yall want the man fired, people have been talking about his family. MC-give the man a lil love. I have one question for all the BLOGGERS. If we beat Orlando and advance to the second round and then get swept in the second round, will yall still be asking for his termination?

“Van Gundy teams can be trusted to make the right adjustments (not to mention the right preparations, which aren’t possible on a regular-season schedule), but can Larry Drew teams be trusted to respond? If there’s a reason to believe that to be the case, it’s fairly well concealed under Drew’s other missteps this season.”

The Hawks are not a rebuilding project so I will expect Drew to get fired unless he shows progress. I do agree when you coach the Wolves or Wizards you give a coach time to develop his players. LD did not get that luxury, coaching a 53 win team you have high expectations. That is not to say he will not be a good coach in the future, but he needs to grow with a team.

In almost every statisical category the Hawks are a worse team. He has made a couple of good coaching decisions (starting Twin against Orlando and finishing with him and giving Teague a start against Portland to give team a spark), but repeatly he has shown he is a first year coach.

LD is a liability. Why did he wait so long to put Collins in? Why the hell wasn’t jt in to slowdown Nelson? Why the hell was JC2 playing pg .KH didn’t shoot well or play great defense on Nelson.why didn’t Wilkins play. I am afraid that we will not be able to overcome his bad decisions. God I would love to see Etan play for more than a minute every 30 games. I hope he gives our starters some rest before the playoffs.

I agree with LD. Hold your horses Smoove. Let’s see y’all beat Boston and/or San Antonio before we declare y’all out of the woods. Let’s not forget that the early March win against Chicago was followed by four straight losses, and the two impressive wins against Portland and Milwaukee were followed by two blowout losses. They need more than one win over a quality opponent to show that the last month and a half are behind them.

None of Collins’ fouls looked like flagrants to me, but at the same time, Dwight is a lot like Shaq in that a foul that is hard enough to be called a flagrant against anyone else is not going to look like a flagrant when committed against him. If Collins comes down with the same force on, say, Chris Bosh, Bosh probably goes flying and Collins gets called for the flagrant. I can sympathize to an extent with Dwight in that it’s gotta suck to get hammered twice as hard as everyone else and not have a flagrant foul called in your favor all season.

Making excuses…

All these national writers making excuses for what has happened to the Magic. They are not the same team as last year. They are SMALLER and SOFTER and no one seems to accept these facts.

I know how we have played this year but we have 50 win talent and they are starting to focus.

The Magic are worse 2-4 this year and they are in trouble.

You can stop worrying about what Jordan Crawford is doing with the Wizards, because he was never going to do anything close to what he’s doing now under LDrew. Just like Woodson, he’ll play his vets into the ground, no matter what the outcome, before playing a rookie or younger guard.

We’re already seeing him give major mins to Jamal, despite him being in a prolonged slump and playing out of position, while JTeague receives minimal mins, even when his speed, quickness and DEF are desperately needed. After almost 2yrs of receiving the WOODY/DREW TREATMENT, Teague seems to be holding up a lot better than SStaudemire and ALaw managed to do.

I think Teague and Hinrich make a very complimentary backcourt, and I think JJ is better suited to playing SF. He’s not as quick, fast and/or athletic as most starting SG’s, but he has enough of those attributes, along with his size and strength, to have an advantage over most SF’s.

Most SF aren’t included in pick and rolls, so he won’t have to fight over so many picks. Most SF operate on the wing, so he won’t have to defend his man in the open back court. Both Hinrich and Teague are quicker, faster and more athletic than JJ, which makes them better able to defend pick and rolls and provide help DEF.

I can’t say we have enough talent to win the NBA championship, but I can certainly say we have enough to determine who does. All that’s missing to make it all work is a HC that can instill more structure, accountability, confidence and decipline.

Allen Iverson’s Lambo in Lock-Up

Allen Iverson ’s sick Lamborghini is sitting in an Atlanta police impound yard … after the former NBA superstar got pulled over last night … TMZ has learned. Atlanta PD confirms Iverson was a passenger in his silver 2009 Lambo when they pulled over the ride because it had expired dealer tags. Police impounded the whip and gave A.I. a ticket. By the way, after Iverson got his belongings out of the Lambo — he slipped into another car … his friends were following in an even sicker Rolls-Royce. That’s just how he Rolls.

Twin will need to work on his cardio because it looks like we will need him to finish off the 4th quarter with orlando.

Can people please stop with all the Crawford updates? Yah, it’s great that he’s doing so well on a lottery team, but come on people. We only drafted him because we didn’t know if Joe would be back. [insert insane contract here] But because Joe did come back we were NEVER going to play him, especially with Jamal still on the roster. Would you all have preferred if we didn’t trade him so he could sit and twiddle his thumbs on the bench?

I’ll take Teague over Crawford any day of the week. He shows way to much potential in his entire game, whereas Crawford seems to be stuck on his jump shot. Which brings me to my next point, do we really want another extreme jump shooter?!

And i’m sure Jordan is happy with the trade too.

Dwight takes some hard shots and he’s whinning? Get over it sissy. You must be able to take it if you dish it out too. No more easy dunks, dude. Twin Terminator is in the house.

Throw it down big man, Dominique (as Bill Walton would say)

Those of us that are quickly turning the corner as if to believe the Hawks have the necessary stuff to beat the Magic-please take a minute to look at some troubling obstacles. In all the games we have beat the Magic, they haven’t played well, and they haven’t suited all their players, and were still within 1 or 2 plays from winning the game.
The Magic beat us on 3 fundamental issues-3 point shooting, pick and roll defense and dribble penetration. We played a good game last night, I somewhat hesitant to call it a perfect game, but make no mistake four of those type games will be hard to find next month against the Magic. In addition, the Magic are almost where Boston was last year-they haven’t really put together a formidable run yet they have found ways to win games against big teams, and they are going to win about the same games in the regular season as Boston did last year with their core players playing with something to prove especial JN and DH. ( Almost like the old team we called the Celtics last year). Make no mistake, they are not the Celtics, just expressing some similarity.

To beat the Magic we would have to stick to a strict strategy with in game adjustments where necessary and one on one Dwight D to stop the 3’s. LD would have to coach up in this series in my opinion, not to say the Stan has done great in the playoffs. To illustrate game strategy and coaching: Last night while we are doing well with Twin on Dwight and then LD decides to go to his “training camp strategy” of AL going one on one with Dwight just because on paper it has worked out before on other big men. I think Najeh talked about Josh running down yelling he’s too big before LD finally succumbed to making the change.

Also, our old switch on pick and roll defense will not fair well when the game slows down in April. I am sorry, but this is going to be a 6 game series at best.

For those who felt Sund and the ASG made a BIG mistake by refusing to overpay to sign Snaq, do you still feel that way? Shaq hasn’t been healthy enough, or played in enough gms, to qualify for anything but medical treatment.

Shaq frequently missing extended time while nursing questionable injuries is what turned Kobe and DWade against him. Both of these players are well known for their toughness and willingness to play through pain and serious injuries.

Big Krit is not original at all. He sounds just like Pimp C. Krit gives you the old skool southern rap style but his lack of originality will hold him back from ever being anything more than a southern success. Plus, his name is a dig at T.I.(King Remembered in Time), which is lame to name yourself in direct reference to someone else. Lastly, when KRIT tries to step up to the throne T.I. will murder his career like the other wanna-be competitors and he will use the name to show that KRIT was just another mini me.

On to the Hawks, Larry Drew and Rick Sund both have to go along with Kirk Hinrich, along with moving Al in a trade or move him to his correct position of PF. What I mean is all the stopgap (getting one until you can get the one) stuff must end here.

Kirk Hinrich should be traded so there is no way he can be your starting PG day 1 of next year.

Zaza, Marvin, or Joe must be traded along with Kirk Hinrich to rid the team of 1 of there bad term longer contracts.

You must get a C and a SF or a C and a PG in the trade that moves Kirk Hinrich and Zaza or Kirk and Marvin or Kirk and Joe.

Here’s a word on the so-called “coming back early from injuries” nonsense.

The Predicament– Hawks have an offseason $120 million signeee with very poor statistics and a history of making derogatory comments aimed at his own fans.

The Trick/Bait — They (in this case the Hawks) must get the public to buy into in some initial (and ongoing) press release that states some arbitrary period of time that is “expected” before the player returns. This *may* involve exagerating an injury or some alleged procedure in order to serve their purpose.

(Note: Once the public has fallen for this hook, line and sinker — everyone with the agenda has got the public right where they want them)

The Objective — If an entity with access to the press (in this case the Hawks) desires a positive reaction (from the public) surrounding a player — they wax a longer period of absence than is actually expected for the player’s return from injury.

The final spin —The player *appears* (to the public) in a positive light (almost heroic) when they “return early” from injury.

Bingo!

(Now wasn’t that easy?)

The press is the enemy of anyone who does not have access to it for the purpose of brainwashing people in order to enhance their own agenda.

Believe ONLY what you know to be fact — based on your own observation.

Word on The Street!

doc, allegedly this Rashan guy swung on the security people first, made contact there, then swung on Nique in his chest area. Then Nique gave him a lovely facial, he will need cucumbers to reduce the puffy eye lids I guess. LOL!

That ref looked like a defeated boxer after 15 rounds, he’ll need a
“cut-man” heh? Seems like he was looking for trouble and he found it!.

I was listening to The 2-Live Stews today on 790 The Zone and,
Doug and Ryan said this Rashan was a friend of theirs. Apparently, when they met this “crotch – sniffer”?

He gave them each, two samples of his custom made shirts to try out, in hopes they would place orders in the future and recommend his services to their family, friends and contacts. Ryan said he took the shirts but never ordered anything. Doug may have placed an order or two.

Ryan said Rashan got a little aggressive with him and intimated that since he didn’t show him any love, perhaps he should pay him for those samples. Ryan checked him and put him in his place, but remained friendly. They saw the mug shot and was like – damn! wow! Why did he come at Nique at work, in the arena with that ISH. This guy has some serious personality disorders and created a discrepancy for himself.

I wish people would get over this Jordan Crawford thing. He is really playing minor league ball with a big league team.Iffhe was with a team that was playing for a playoff position he would be on the bench. He is learning to play because The Wizards have nothing to lose.We see the point total, but we don’t see the missed assignments and the turnovers. He is getting killed on defense and if you saw how Wade and the other top players were using him, people would not be so jacked up.He is in a good place to learn, but if he was playing for a upper ranked team he would be in the D League.

From the previous blog;

Rod,

Defensively, from what I see, he can not stay in front of the quicker guards in the league, which was the problem when Bibby was here..

If Bibby only had trouble staying in front of the quicker guards, then the Hawks would have only switched against quicker guards. But the reality was the Hawks switched every game all the time, because (imo) Bibby could not stay in front of anybody.

Woody said the switching was to cover up certain guys weaknesses, and I think it all started with Bibby.

I’m with Najeh and LD. I can’t get carried away just because we’ve beat 2 bottom feeders (Nets and Cavs), and won a close gmae against Orlando. I need to see it more consistently against good teams before I buy in.

•L.D. said he most likely would go back to the “regular” lineup vs. the C’s: “At the five spot, Krstic is good but I think we can match up pretty good with him with our regular lineup. I haven’t made a decision yet but I’m leaning that way.”.

In the Celtics-Spurs game last night, Krstic left with a knee injury and is going to get an MRI, so its very unlikely that he plays tonight. Maybe they will go with JO, who just returned from injury.

Rondo went off against Tony Parker last night. 22 pts, 14 assists, 0 turnovers. Wow.

With the Celtics playing last night, and no Shaq, no Krstic, I would like to see the Hawks win tonight. Maybe LD will find minutes for Teague

Rod,

Also, to be thorough, not all of Rose’s points came with Hinrich guarding him. And I am willing to bet that not all of Nelson’s points came with Hinrich guarding him, so despite scoring above their season average, I dont think you should put it all on Kirk.

And just because a guy is a good defender does not mean he is a defensive stopper. Sometimes all the good defender can do is make his opponent work harder for his shot, and still get a hand up.

No, Woodsons switching was designed to cover up Al Horford’s frail defense in the paint. He was and is getting abuse regardless of who the point guard is. There was an argument that once bibby man beat him there was little to be done. We changed Bibby and that did not work. It only works when we put some one under the basket not named Al horford. Of course there are more Big bodies around than during Woodsons tenure. Woodson had little choice but to rotate and switch to help Horford. It doesnt matter if Gary Payton was the point. Opposing Coaches will still pick and isolate Horford under the basket and abuse him.

MC, you got to be scratching your head AT some of the comments LD makes…that was a rhetorical question…I know you can’t respond.

Just when you want have a good feel about this dude…he keep talking about going back to THE regular line-up. When is he going to understand that old model is broken…he’s a HC now…he got to come up with something new.

Thanks to the Hawks recent upswing…I was able enjoying watching the feature NBA game on TNT.

It was interesting watching the Lakers and Celtics preparing for the playoff…Both coaches was focus on getting their reserves prepared for the playoff…because they know it’s a war of attrition.

Doc, said the reserves are going to look bad because they haven’t been getting much PT…that why some time you have to leave them out there…even if cost you a few games…my point is…he was more concern with his reserves being able up to perform up to his team’s standard…even if it cost him a couple games.

The great coaches know half court execution is paramount in the playoff…and all know that has been the Hawks undoing.
I’m thinking to myself…would it behoove LD to adopt a similar…or at the very lease consider some aspect of that approach…we have starters that need rest…and reserves that need PT…shouldn’t Twin start the rest of the season…so the Hawks can fine tune their half court execution…hmmmmmm…just saying…again purely rhetorical.lol

Ken Strick, now that’s the Ken I know…still bashing Shaq…even though he would have provided the ASG an athlete with star power and KA GILLONS dollars in free marketing…keep bashing away…glad you are feeling a little better.lol

If Larry Drew should be fired even if he reached the Conference Finals is crazy. There are only going to be 4 coaches remaning at that point. Even if you like it or not, he will be around for some years. So get use to it or stick with your Florida teams. And @AJ-any players stats go up when they go to a losing team. The Game has changed,

I think if LD makes it to the second round, they should bring him back next year. But if he loses in the first round, he should be fired.

However, regardless of whether the team makes it to the second round or not, there needs to be a trade to shake up the roster, because its not all the coach’s fault. Players need to accept some of the blame.

I like Jordan but he was not going to be doing that in the playoffs against Orlando. Jamal can but not Jordan..

The defensive effort the Hawks show tonight is more important than a win. I would rather lose 85 to 84, than win 108 to 107. The playoffs will be played in the 80 point range and that is the Identity we need to show. Scoring a hundred points against Boston is an aberration and could be easily dismissed.

Josh Smith has averaged 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds the past four games, a boost of confidence he’ll need against Boston. He’s missed all 11 shots he’s taken in the two meetings with the Celtics, totaling three points – his two worst individual performances in the past four seasons.

If somebody owed you 13K for some home made suits?
Why wouldn’t you get a 50% deposit up front and the balance upon delivery? If you are not that smart and this passes for years without resolution? Then file a civil suit – that’s where ignorant people go who can’t resolve issues in a CIVILIZED manner!

Like Doug and Ryan said on their talk show yesterday. This Rashan character gave them 2 shirt samples each in hopes of future orders and referrals. When, Ryan took the samples and didn’t order any thing, this man became aggressive and demanded Ryan pay him for the unsolicited samples!

So, we don’t know anything about this alleged money owed.
Why not stay out of that aspect and refrain from baseless opinions and statements. I don’t see any of this is lewis’s business.

Even if he does owe the money, there is no justification for a physical assault ending in a self induced butt whuppin’ and cry for sympathy.

That’s a possibility, but Hawks are already over the cap, so unless they are willing to spend the MLE to go over the luxury tax, that bonafide center will have to come via trade. And I think Josh and Al are their only good trade chips.

IMO, even if we make the second round, there have been too many home blowouts to not make a trade (especially if we keep LD).

@O’Brien-The Hawks have money. ASG is just stingy. Phillips Arena was paid for by the Phillips company so money is available. Going over the luxury cap is only a big deal to teams who dont want to win. The Lakers payout is almost 92 million this year. Do you think they care about the luxury cap. In this case, the numbers dont lie.

When point guard Mike Bibby has been on the floor for the Heat, Miami’s defense has surrendered 15 points per 100 possessions more than when he has sat on the bench. (We use per 100 possessions as the standard to control for potential tempo effects).

That sounds bad, but how damaging is that? Consider this: the difference between the league’s top defense (Chicago) and the league’s worst defense (Cleveland) is 12.5 points per 100 possessions. Do the math, and you find that Bibby’s defensive impact has been about three points wider than that.

In fact, according to Synergy Sports, opponents have shot 51.2 percent on spot-ups when guarded by Bibby, but it’s effectively 66.3 percent shooting once you account for the fact that many of those spot-up shots come from beyond the arc. You don’t need a leaderboard to gauge how atrocious that is. .
