Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 85, Magic 82

  • During the game I kept telling Hawks PR man Arthur Triche that strange stuff was happening like Twin holding down Dwight and Josh draining fade away jumpers.
  • And then the most bizarre thing of all happened after: An Ex-NBA ref allegedly attacked ‘Nique soon after he finished his TV duties. Atlanta Police arrested the man. ‘Nique was said to be uninjured and returned home.
  • As for the game, it’s uncertain what these three straight Ws against the Magic will mean come the playoffs, especially since this was the first meeting in which Orlando was (relatively) healthy and cohesive.
  • But, as Jamal put it: “It definitely doesn’t hurt.”
  • I used to think the Heat would provide the best potential playoffs match up for the Hawks because of their shaky point guard play and lack of a real scoring threat on the front line. Now it might be the Magic, though their lack of depth while missing Redick was a mitigating factor tonight.
  • And the reason for that shift in view, so help me gosh, is Twin.
  • How’s this Stan Van Gundy quote for strangeness: “That’s the best defense I’ve seen all year on Dwight. He did a great job. Against Collins, [Howard] didn’t get a lot of good shots. I thought he did a great job on him. He’s big and physical. He doesn’t give you anything easy. Dwight had trouble getting good, on-balance shots.”
  • Twin also got Dwight into early foul trouble, first by taking a (legit) charge and then by boxing him out for a rebound and forcing Dwight to grab him. Dwight likes to give out physical punishment but is bothered when he has to take it.
  • “He’s a great player,” Collins said. “He’s done a really good job with improving his post moves and not just going with power. When he goes power, that’s when I try to get into position to take a charge.”
  • And, credit to Collins, he is able to get good position on Howard. With the Hawks playing sound defense on the perimeter (save for Jameer’s third quarter) Twin wasn’t faced with too many mismatches in space.
  • “I think they are guarding us differently now,” Ryan Anderson said. “Collins is a bigger body that makes it tough on Dwight. That’s pretty much what they’re doing. We just need to get in the gym and work on countering that.”
  • Add that to the list of the bizarre: An opposing player talking about needing to come up with a different game plan to counter Jason Collins’ impact.
  • Twin wasn’t in the game for most of the fourth as L.D. went small. Dwight took advantage by earning eight eight free-throw attempts and scoring eight of his 17 points in the period. Twin headed back in with 1:40 to play, after Dwight had gotten three straight plays at the basket.
  • “That’s kind of what we’ve done the first three games, we’ve played big on him all the way into the fourth quarter,” Drew said. “Hopefully Al can go into the fourth with low fouls; tonight he had one when we put him on Dwight. Tonight the strategy didn’t work out so I went back to Jason at the end there who came in and did a a good job on him. Sometimes certain thing don’t work and you have to be ready to adjust.”
  • The Hawks held the Magic, a good shooting team, to 38 percent from the floor in four games. On 3-pointers, Orlando was 4 for 22 in Game 1, 4 for 22 in game 2, 4 for 17 in Game 3 and 7 for 23 tonight.
  • If the Magic can’t make 3s, and Dwight is having an inefficient night, and Nelson isn’t allowed to run wild . . . . then they can be slowed.
  • It also helps when Dwight is limited by foul trouble because without Gortat the Magic have no other quality bangers to speak of (why did they make that move when they were chasing the Celtics?)
  • The Magic hung with the Hawks because Turkoglu and Nelson were efficient and timely scorers and the Hawks managed just 16 points in the fourth period with J.J. (1 for 5) and Jamal (1 for 4) unable to convert.
  • “They are the type of team, they are going to be around,” L.D. said. “You have to be mentally strong to really milk every possession against them. They are going to make you work on the defensive end. With Dwight, they can basically get the shots they want particularly if you have to double team him.”
  • Depending on how the games are called, Collins’ defensive work against Howard should be repeatable in the playoffs. Same goes for Zaza’s energetic attack on the boards. Also have to think the Hawks can keep sharing the ball like this (21 assists on 33 field goals).
  • But not so sure the Hawks can rely on Smoove’s silky jump shots, their 13 for 15 free-throw shooting or foul trouble for Dwight.
  • Josh was energetic and active on defense and had four assists against one turnover.
  • J.J., facing aggressive double teams, had moments where he again looked like the player who can get his on post-ups, runners and hesitation moves. He had other moments where he was too indecisive with the ball and, in fairness to Smoove, sometimes that resulted in passes to Josh late in the shot clock necessitating a jumper.
  • J.J. missed on a drive to the basket with the Hawks up 84-82. “Forget about it and move on,” Joe said. “But that’s tough, missing a little easy shot in the lane like that.”
  • Hinrich missed lots of open shots but harassed Nelson, who still made some tough baskets.
  • “Jameer got to the basket a couple times but the most important thing with Kirk is he is going to make those point guards work,” Drew said. “They are going to score baskets–those guys are good. But he’s going to make them work.”

As a continued advocate of LD’s firing, I will also continue to give props to him for possibly the best thing he has done as a Head Coach; go big with Collins against certain teams, especially the Magic.

He continues to be a terrible Coach. Nothing has changed on that front.

But as I’ve said all year, the Hawks have the talent to beat every team in the East in a 7 game series, except maybe Boston.

We match up very well against Chicago, Miami, and Orlando.

And Najeh, your comment about Smoove yelling for LD to get Collins in the game is priceless. Smoove may have more on court BB knowledge than LD.
LD is just a terrible, terrible Coach. But the Hawks may get hot, and win despite him. Hope they do.

Go Hawks!

P.S. I think we can beat Boston, if we are mentally prepared. SA has lost 4 in a row without Duncan, so we can beat them also. @Houston and @Indy still concern me a little if they are still battling for a playoff spot.

The Hawks modus operandi this season: Follow up a great victory like last night with a 4-8 game funk.

I sense something different this time. I hope I’m right.

MC, Bizarre indeed…The Hawks show some defensive toughness…Nigue beat a joker down…NOW that’s what I called the HIGHLIGHT FACTORY…sorry MC I couldn’t resist.lol

Terrific win by the Hawks.

LD made some good personnel decisions down stretch of the game…although painfully slow…he made them…that was much better.

Two things though…it want be nearly that easy in the playoff…and Dwight will turn into an animal once the playoff start…LD want be able to put AL on Dwight.

We will need Teague, Damein, and all of the Bigs to make through Orlando in the playoff…I hope LD don’t miss that.

When Josh makes up his mind…he can move among the elite young players in the league…he can be one of the most dynamic players in the NBA…if he would commit to playing the game fundamentally right…and playing under control.

GOOD WIN…KEEP IT GOING!!!!!!!!!!!

I still didn’t watch, didn’t go and didn’t listen…but I own up to my bad prediction of a 20 point defeat. We won the game, but Reddick being out had to matter.

we’ll see what happens in a few weeks when the games truly matter…

nice win for a change, though…

Katie – “FORMALLY known as jc2 will live up to his Hawks counterpart (jamal) and that’s probably it. Just jack up enough shots and the points will come, if you’re lucky….”

Katie – I agree that JC2 has not proven that he will be an All-Star or anything of the sorts but the frustration from fans is more about Hawks management passing up on another potential solid player. Also, he may be jacking up a lot of shots, he is also contributing in other ways, last 5 games he is averaging 4.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 2 steals. JC1 has seldom had that kind of overall performance over a 5 game strech.

The Crying Game!
Starring – Dwight Howard & Jameer Nelson
__________________

ATLANTA — Dwight Howard didn’t sound worried after the Orlando Magic lost to the Atlanta Hawks 85-82 on Wednesday.

But he did sound frustrated.

Frustrated with the officiating. Frustrated with the talk that the Hawks may have found their groove against the Magic. And frustrated with the Magic’s lack of rest.

The Magic’s all-star center felt that Jason Collins deserved to receive a flagrant foul instead of a personal foul when Collins wrapped up Howard around the upper shoulders with 3:33 remaining in the second quarter.

“[On] anybody else it would’ve been a flagrant,” Howard said. “But against me, it’s a regular foul.”

Howard expressed no concern that the Magic lost their regular-season series to the Hawks, their likely first-round opponent.

“It’ll be a different animal in the playoffs,” he said.

Meanwhile, injuries have reduced the Magic to just nine available players, including Gilbert Arenas, who continues to have problems with his left leg.

And it seems that Howard wanted to make sure the Magic had Thursday off from practice.

“We need our rest, you know,” Howard said.

“A lot of guys are trying to get healthy, and we keep pounding them away. Gilbert, his knee isn’t right yet. That’s not excuses, but when you have a short roster sometimes rest is what’s going to get everybody back healthy. You can’t force the issue or press your team when you know everybody’s not healthy.

“We’ve got to have our rest,” he added later. “We’ve practiced enough. We’ve had enough shootarounds. It’s about rest right now.”

The Magic will not practice Thursday.

Jameer Nelson said they remember The Hawks “show boating” on December 20th.
*****************

Imagine Mr. Kryptonite crying about a foul against himself. Didn’t he have 15 fouls in 15 minutes last night? Well, he was only charged with 5 of those! So, Twin wraps him up like a mexican burrito and he feels that was flagrant? What a veiled cry! There is a lot of crying down in the Sunshine State these days.

So, Nelson remembers a December 20th ’show boating’ event?
And?

Lessons Learned!

These little “nutz huggers” are all alike. Jewelers and Tailors trying to over charge athletes for their services and apparently are more than happy to deliver goods without COD are not only bad business men, but idiots as well.

How many of us have ever entered a Super Target store, filled our buggies and leave without a method of payment? That’s criminally illegal and it’s called shop lifting. So, why would you deliver a service and brag about your client’s list without ever being paid?

If someone commits a crime against you? You take them to court not commit and equal crime and assault someone court-side.
Perhaps the suit(s) didn’t fit well or whatever, but there is a civil and legal recourse for these instances.

I recall Deion Sanders refusing to pay a mechanic in Atlanta, who restored the instrument panel of a classic, antique Cadillac because the guy quoted him one price up front and tried to collect 10 times the amount upon delivery. Dieon refused payment as requested, drove off in the car and sent payment for the original amount that was estimated.
The mechanic took Dieon to court and LOST!

Same thing happened with Snoop Dogg out in LA, same outcome there as well. Dieon said he refused to be punked at the cash register, just because of who he is! A Star Athlete. Dieon said it was a matter of principle and he was simply tired of being wallet-jacked!

Oh yeah. Nicknames are a sure sign of thuggery. In fact, anyone who ever refers to an individual by anything other than the name on their birth certificate should be a suspect in every open murder case. We all know those gangsters are so diligent about posting all their day to day activities on blogs, being sure to refer to people only by their nicknames in the process.

You can argue all you want about Crawford being replaceable.

Fact is, we got a steal in that last draft at 27. We drafted a pure scorer. A guy who can put the ball in the hoop.

He was capable of giving this team spot minutes here and there, just as Teague’s ready to step on the floor and get meaningful minutes. What bugs me is these guys sit on the end of the bench and rot for the majority of the season as if they’re not capable of contributing.

Argue all you want whether trading a solid young talent for a stop-gap PG is a good move. Fact is, the Hawks haven’t shown anything since that deal went down that makes me take them anymore seriously now than I did prior to the deal. So, was it a good deal? If you asked me now, seeing nothing else was done aside from the Hinrich deal, I’d say, you kiddin me?

I’m sure The Magic will agree, they were not better than
” JJ + JC1 + zaza/collins” last night. -wink-

The entire league is littered with better player than ours, but they don’t play for this team and therefore, remain irrelevant to our cause.
For the last time people, the Hawks never needed JC2 after JJ was re-signed and he was selected prior to the fact.

This team has always needed a true PG and Center, not another high volume, non defensive rookie SG. JC2 became irrelevant to the Hawks mission the day JJ was re-signed. Move on people, there is nothing to see here. What we need now is DEFENSIVE players, our window of opportunity will soon be closed. We are not a rebuilding team! See Washington for all that noise. Defense wins Championships.

Hawks beat Magic in first round of playoffs, are competetive in second round, resulting in Drew keeping his job, Teague sitting on the bench next year, Jamal being re-signed, and Collins regarded as the Hawks secret weapon at center.

As far as the ‘window of opportunity’ goes, this team hasn’t done anything this season, or in previous playoff series, that leads me to believe there really is even a window. There are more questions about this club now more than ever.

Which is why I’d rather just cut our losses, start young, and try this thing again.

@Dumbfounded,

Because that’s where Josh is more times than not, structured to setup in LD’s offensive sets. That’s a function of Drew’s “interchangable” parts offense and one of my biggest gripes with his play set philosophy.

It seems he pulls Josh away to create space underneath for Joe insted of the other way around.

Wabe,

Exactly. Jordan was the 27th pick, so nobody expects the guy to be an all star, shoot 45% from the field, and average 15 ppg. All we are saying is for a rookie, who was the 27th pick, he has shown lots of potential.

Does he have things to work on? Sure. Shot selection and defense most notably. But in 2 seasons (with the right coaching and assuming JC2 improves) he could average 10 -15 ppg with better play while still on a rookie salary.

And long term, he could develop into a poor man’s Jamal. Which isn’t bad for a 27th pick. Meanwhile, this offseason, Hawks will be looking to replace Jamal’s scoring off the bench (I dont think we can afford to resign him).

Again, I stress. HE (JC2) COULD NOT EVEN DRESS for the Hawks. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Not that he was only used in garbage time. Or that he received a few DNP-CD’s here and there.

Nope. He couldn’t even suit-up the vast majority of our games. He’s not scoring 20 per game in the D-league. He’s doing it in the NBA.

I’m not a JC2 fan. But what other franchise would consider a guy capable of averaging 20 per game unworthy to even dress?

There’s just a freakin’ difference between not getting big minutes and not even dressing a guy. This isn’t just missing something by a small amount. It shows complete idiocy, if you ask me.

Great post, that is my point and the point of many others on this blog. I said it when the Bibby/Hinrich trade was made that it would be a bad trade only if Jordan Crawford became a good NBA player, it is obvious that the big man we got in the trade from the Wizards suck. Bibby and Hinrich is a even swap, but basically giving away JC2 was terrible. We may lose Jamal next year JC2 would have been a great replacement. He is just a rookie he will get better, his shot selection will get better he scored 39 last night on 50% shooting from the floor. The Hawks do not do a good job of developing their young talent, especially the guards. One gut posted a week ago he will think it was a bad move only after JC2 have proven himself, well bud that will be too late. Tha Hawks must recoginize what they have and develop it.

O’Brien,

“And last night was a good example of a game where Marvin down the stretch is a much better option than Jamal, who was 1-4 in the 4th, with his usual no defense.”

No. It was a good example of LD realizing that this great point guard (Kirk Hinrich) that was not a starter for the past three years for a reason, as I told you, is not such a great defender of point guards. He has been playing the 2 and coming off the bench for the last 3 years for a reason. Jameer Nelson stole his lunch money last night, and Derrick Rose made him look like he was on skates in the last game agianst Chicago. Guess what, in the playoffs we will play Jameer Nelson, and if we win that series, I think the next round would be Derrick Rose. Hinrich has shown me nothing since his been here. He can shoot like Bibby, his defense is a little better, but he does not penetrate either, he does not run the offense well, he turns the ball over more than Bibby, and this so called high basketball IQ has not shown up for us. If Hinrich was able to stay in front of his man, none of your issues with Jamal being in would even be relevant. I think we both agree that Teague defensively would be the answer, but we already know that he won’t get any minutes. Can’t blame Jamal and Josh for everything.

What good is it going to do, to become The Orator of the Obvious?
He gone people! At what point will you become tired of gnashing your teeth, before it feels better?

If you want to go over every lopsided trade in the NBA, then fine, do that somewhere else. Go to a NY blog and join them to complain about hopw much talent they gave up for an upcoming UFA in 20 weeks from now, when even with Melo today, they had no chance ion hell at a Title this year! Or, go to the Boston blog and help them wallow in self pity for trading Perkins over a 5M discrepancy. Or go to the Magic blog and help them cry about trading Pietris, Matt Barnes and Gortat for a bunch on smaller players that can’t play ANY defense.

Or, just grow up, move on and get over it! The Hawks don’t need any more JUMP SHOOTERS! We need some danged DEFENDERS and REBOUNDERS period.
