Magic at Atlanta Hawks: Meaning and matchups

The Hawks sure do sound confident about playing the Magic. Not that I thought they’d say they are worried or anything but a more measured tone might be expected after last spring’s beat down, the extenuating circumstances surrounding the three previous meetings this season and Atlanta’s issues since the All-Star break.

It’s that last part that had Smoove playing down what tonight’s game might mean for the likely rematch in the playoffs.

“The playoffs and regular season are completely different,” he said. “We just want to play consistently right now.”

L.D. and J.J., meanwhile, obliged media types looking for that playoffs angle.

Joe: “We’ve played them pretty well during the regular season. Obviously the playoffs are a lot different but
we know we can play this team.”

Drew: “I think it’s definitely a carryover. We want to approach this game like it has true meaning, which it does. Win, lose or draw we have to come out and establish ourselves and compete and play hard. The last thing you want to do in a game like this is not play with an aggressive instinct. The way we gave played in the month of March we don’t have any room for that. We have to come out and we have to be the aggressor from start to finish. ”

Al’s view falls somewhere in between: “I think it will be a good test for us. I don’t think that determines everything but we have to come with that [playoffs] mentality.”

This is all just talk, of course. The Hawks generally executed a sound plan against the Nets and Cavs which, while certainly better than the alternative, did little to answer questions about this team’s ability to do so when there is more resistance.

So the talk about the Magic must be backed up with action, though I’m sure my blog people welcome such talk if it increases the chances that the Hawks will be ready for this.

“I think we got embarrassed so bad in the postseason last year when we play this team we know what to expect and I think we tend to play a little harder,” J.J. said.

Game Notes

  • L.D. is using the Hinrich, J.J., Josh, Al, Twin lineup. Jameer will play for the Magic.
  • L.D. and Hawks players all seem to agree that the big lineup has made the difference vs. the Magic: “I think big Jason Collins has done an unbelievable job on them each time we have played,” Joe said, adding that he was a little unsure about the alignment at first. “I didn’t know how it would work but it has really played into our hands.”
  • Al on Atlanta’s increased confidence vs. Orlando: “It’s all about match ups. I feel the time we have played them our bigger guys like Zaza and Jason have done a good job on Dwight. He’s obviously having an MVP-type season but we have been able to play better with a bigger lineup.”
  • Josh on one benefit of the big lineup: “Defensively it helps a lot because with Dwight setting those mean picks, I can guard him fairly well. I mean, not as well as big men, but probably better than most threes when make the switch.”
  • Drew on the plan: “Obviously with Dwight, he’s a load. You have to really be refined on what you are doing against him. This team is a really good 3-point shooting team. Our game plan going in it won’t change from the first three times we played them. We have to do a good job with Dwight [and] we have to do a good job defending the 3-point line.”
  • Drew on the post-trade Magic: “They’ve gotten some rhythm. The guys they’ve gotten in the trade have certainly gotten acclimated to what they do. That was just going to be a matter of time. We knew that. Turkoglu can cause a lot of problems with his size and ability to handle the basketball and make plays. Arenas is very capable. Richardson seems to be playing at a high level. They are a tough ball club. They have got weapons all over the floor. We can’t let Dwight go crazy and at the same time we have to do a good job defending that 3-point line.”
  • Orlando media types tell me Arenas has lost much of his explosiveness in addition to struggling with his shot. So much for rejuvenation: Arenas’ player efficiency rating, offensive win shares and field-goal percentages, already at or near career lows with Washington this season, have declined even further with the Magic. Sounds like a job for Teague.

MC,

Thanks that last little goad for Drew to use Teague. It makes no sense from what I have obseved Teague do in games where he played with the starters to leave him to languish on the bench. It begins to seem like a personal vendetta.

Does Drew ever interact with you over things you have written or read on the blogs?

Every game matters…

The Magic swept the Cavs in the regular season 2 years ago and beat them in the playoffs.

The Magic demolished the Hawks in 3 of 4 games last regular season= Playoff beatdown.

THIS IS THE 4TH GAME, IN A BEST OF 11 SERIES!!!…Don’t try to sell this game short.

GO HAWKS!!!!

@ Rev in Tampa: “Does Drew ever interact with you over things you have written or read on the blogs?”

nope. it’s been my experience that most coaches/players/GMs don’t read much of what’s written about the team or at the very least don’t let reporters know that they do. that’s probably a good strategy in the long run. it can’t be easy to have your job performance critiqued on a daily basis. they make a lot of money but they are still human.

I like the big line up, it has proven to do pretty well this year. I actually like any line up other than the Kirk/JJ/Marvin/Josh/Horford one. That line up seems to get smashed almost every time.

you know what i want them to win and by some miracle if they beat them in the playoffs I will say hawks for the title lol.

In all seriousness I mhope they come out on fire. Also glad they aren’t playing the meaning of this game down… well atleast drew and joe aren’t. Normally they play it down and don’t show up so maybe by them not playing it down they will show up.

I said earlier in the year that the Hawks are better than the magic pre trade and post trade. and If atl hadnt been in this slump I’d still say it even now. All in all though if they just follow up like the heat. The heat beat a couple of bad teams then beat a good one and got on a major roll. hopefully the hawks will do the same after beating the Nets, and Cavs.

northclyde,

Yes Lenny was a very good coach for the Hawks.Hated the Manning trade. Manning was always hurt and underachieved that is why when Nique came back he killed Manning. What did you think of Mike Fratello as coach?

When you think about it with the right coach there isnt any reason why the Hawks ceiling cant be what the Mavericks are. The Hawks are equal to the sum of their parts. I would love to see Josh Smith play the same way Zach Randolph plays with the boards but the problem is and I think will have to be addressed is that Smith and Horford play the same position and it is my belief that one of them will have to be moved for the Hawks to get further

Dwight cannot beat the Hawks by himself no matter how many points he scores. With him being a lousy free throw shooter, we have a lot of fouls to give looking down the bench as long as they don’t use them all up right away. If the guys play their man tight and we double down everytime Dwight gets the ball we can force him to pass. If we do that we stand a chance. If they don’t, it will probably be another beat down. Make THEM a jump shooting team.

By the way, on the stream that I was following the Hawks v Cavs game, the announcers wondered out loud why LD doesn’t play Teague more. How is it everyone see that but the coach?

Hint to Sund: Here’s how you build a team around D12 (if you’re fortunate enough to be around in future). “Obviously with Dwight, he’s a load. You have to really be refined on what you are doing against him. THIS TEAM IS A REALLY GOOD 3-POINT SHOOTING TEAM.” my emphasis added to the last sentence.

Your mission Mr. Sund, is to turn over all rocks to find the absolute best pure shooters available with your #36 pick in the upcoming draft (as well as with your 50th or 51st pick); cats who can be extremely effective in spreading the floor from range; cats like the kid Otis Smith picked up from the Nets in the Vince Carter trade; cats with the sort of potential represented by the kid you just traded to the Bullets.

It’s called taking the long view Mr. Sund, then acting – sooner rather than later – on that view. You’ve heard of that philosophy, haven’t you Mr. Sund?

North-Cyyyde!

And to add to that stellar post, Mr. Johnson picked The Hawks – The Hawks did not pick him! How flattering was that to an 11 win team coached by
Lon “Freddie” Kreuger and Terry Stotts?

Then Eric Daimpeer and Kenyon Martin only came to be recruited by
The original Afro – Billy Knight. They only came for the steak dinner at Bones and to see the girls at “Magic City”. We were spurned by B-Level FA’s.

Joe came here to build his own team and be the man! We haven’t had anything close to getting that Super-Star! We just are not that attractive as an organization. We don’t need a team filled with B-Level talent, we need a block buster player now, a HOFer player now.

Maybe we can get Dwight under a new owner? If he would come, I honestly believe ASKG would go into the Luxury Tax to keep the main core. It’s our only hope now.

I posted my choice for coach on page 2 of the last blog, with great detail as to my rationale. I chose Jeff Van Gundy over Mike Fratello.

Like northcyde, I also like Lenny Wilkens too. Our defense was absolutely lights out! We harassed the hell out of MJ and Scottie with:

Mookie
Steve Smith
Stacy Augmon
Grant Long
Dikembe Mutumbo

Lenny turned Grant Long and Steve Smith into defensive stalwarts with his schemes, something those two were not known for.
The unforgivable was trading Nique. Also, Lenny won his 1000th game as a head coach in Atlanta. I was there the only time we fans ever saw confetti rain from the rafters! Those were the days.

From the previous blog…

“On this team, even a mediocre playing JJ takes pressure off of the other guys. Not because JJ is that good, but because teams gameplan to stop JJ like he’s that good. ”

There is no law that states that a successful offense has to have someone who can command a double team. As the Nuggets are showing, a guy who draws a double team but can’t consistently use the opportunity to quickly get the ball to the open guy doesn’t necessarily have a positive effect on the offense as a whole.

There was a point when Joe was productive enough that teams threw an extra defender at him because a single defender couldn’t consistently stop him. But at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets doubled solely because teams see on tape how slow he is to react to the extra defender and realize they can shut down the Hawks offense entirely by doing so. In other words, it’s not the threat of him taking over a game but rather his inability to handle it that draws the double team in the first place.

“So the talk about the Magic must be backed up with action, though I’m sure my blog people welcome such talk if it increases the chances that the Hawks will be ready for this.”

I think this is right. I also think Orlando will be looking for a starting-quality center in any trade involving Dwight. Al AND (Marvin or Zaza) for Dwight? The money works out. The other option would be offering JJ and some picks for Dwight. Money works out here, too, but I doubt the Magic bite on that one (although the Magic might also be in need of a starting-quality 2-guard next year).

I don’t know about the rest of the blog folk, but even though I would hate to see Al go, I would definitely trade him if it meant bringing home Dwight. The only problem post-Al-for-Dwight trade is that the little bit of depth the Hawks had would absolutely be killed, and there would be no cap space to pay for any additional really good role players.

Damn Teague

March 30th, 2011
6:12 pm

As a Hawks fan you go into every game hoping that this will be the game that it “Clicks” for this team. That Josh Smith realizes that the 3-point shot is not his most dangerous move, that JJ doesn’t struggle with double teams, Marvin Williams plays like his is 6′9″ & plays aggressive, that Al Horford demands to be more integral in the offense, Teague doesn’t spend majority of his time sitting in basically glorified floor seats with another DNP-CD, but most importantly of them all that this team gives 48 minutes of just consistent effort on both ends of the floor. Sometimes the Hawks can tease you and do some or all of these things for stretches, quarters, whole games even (against lesser competition) Only to revert back to the same bad habits that caused them to be historically swept last year. This year as I watch the games I found myself less interested in the final score as much as I used to be, but instead focusing on whether this team is forming winning habits, playing hard, playing like they actually care out there.

I know that it is unrealistic to believe that this will be the game where this coaching staff and players all “figure it out” but as a fan I can HOPE…….. right?

I feel a W tonight! Go Hawks!

“If the guys play their man tight and we double down everytime Dwight gets the ball we can force him to pass. If we do that we stand a chance.”

If anything this is exactly the opposite of what has worked. Single cover Dwight, make him score, let him get his, and stick to the perimeter supporting players like glue. That’s what worked against them last March, that’s what has worked this season, and that’s what will work tonight.

And it wouldn’t hurt to take the ball at him strong and get him into foul trouble, although we all know that’s not going to happen with this team.

What made me mad if last year they hardly played Collins. Come playoff time, the first time they put him in he did well. Once he picked up his 3rd foul in the first half they took him out. Im saying to myself leave him in. If he is the only one that can stop him leave him in you havent played him all season. As soon as they took him out we got blown out.

Gerald

7:37 pm

Here’s something that doesn’t make sense. Dwight Howard has been on the bench almost the entire first quarter, and yet, the Hawks have made almost no attempt to attack in the post. Josh attempted one or two post ups with no success, Al attempted and was successful on one, but other than that, we really didn’t even attack their big men inside. It makes no sense at all. Al was man-handling Anderson in that post-up, and then was being pretty aggressive calling for the ball in the post against Anderson on the next couple of possessions, but his teammates just ignored him. We should have milked those mismatches as much as possible before Dwight returns. Now, Dwight will be re-entering the game soon, and we are essentially in a tie-game because of our failure to recognize and exploit our mismatches. This team is so frustrating sometimes.

i don’t think he necessarily has to learn another move. he needs to learn how to make that floater drop. maybe he’s to be doing things that are fundamentally wrong or something with that move. it would be such a weapon if he learns how to be effective with it… he gets nice penetration when he drives the paint and that teardrop would be lethal.

drmaryb,

I’m not sure which game you are watching, but Al is definitely not hiding from the paint in this game. 4 of his 5 attempts have been in the paint/post tonight. He took 1 midrange, set shot and hit it, the other shots he took were a jump hook in the middle of the lane over ryan anderson (made), a jump hook on the right block over Bass (missed), a putback layup (off of his miss against bass), and a jump shot off of a post-up (missed). Against Anderson, in particular, Al looked very aggressive to me, he just didn’t receive the ball. He was banging inside with Bass also. I don’t know what you want from him. You can only do so much on the offensive end, outside of setting screens and getting offensive boards, when you don’t receive the ball. He definitely should have more than 5 shots, but you can’t put that entire blame on him, it’s not like he hasn’t called for the ball on numerous occasions.

lewis I commented on a previous blog that Turk and Arenas were fading badly. I still maintain Arenas is done, washed up, horrible trade even though Rashard is out for the season. Taking on another season at $20m to bring in Otis Smith’s friend Arenas was a horrible move and will probably assure that Dwight is gone.

Turk on the other hand has been playing well lately. Gortat was alot to give up though. And yes they definitely miss the toughness of Barnes, even though he’s been injured most of the year and is buried way at the end of LA’s rotation when healthy. If Orlando doesn’t go to the finals this year, DH is gone.

Jerome

March 30th, 2011

I agree with Buddy in terms of needing to crash the offensive glass more. It’s a matter of coaching philosophy and taste, but I, personally, would prefer to put a larger emphasis on offensive rebounding than transition defense. I would send the guards down court after every miss, but the big men should always be looking to crash the glass.

Sautee

Thanks for the pep talk. I just several off plays and no player is moving period. The ball handler is stuck with his mates looking at open lanes though. I saw too much of that! We should be up by 12 pts at the half.

A few quick thoughts from Section 116 (these are some amazing seats)…

Smoove and Collins came to play. Say what you want about Collins but he really excels at the one thing he’s paid to do.

Joe looks a lot more aggressive. Hasn’t always resulted in the right results, but I’d rather see him play like this all the time.

Good job by the Hawks drawing 3 first half fouls on Dwight. I thought they could have done a better job, though, capitalizing when he was out of the game. The ball should go in the post every possession regardless, but that is even more important when Dwight is out of the game.

For the love of God please give Teague as many or more minutes than Jamal.

1)The bigs getting the rebound an bringing the ball up the floor(AL an Josh, almost every time)Al is bringing it up calling plays like a pg WTH! No telling how many baskets we could have if they pass the ball to the guards before they cross half court.

2)Kirk doesnt even look like he is trying to stay in front of JAMEER. As soon as Nelson turns the corner he stops. I thought this guy was supposedly so good defensively. He looks average to me. If he cant at least slow down the good pgs what did we get him for? I know Teague makes mistakes but give him some burn with the starters. The bench just messes up his passes and they dont move so he has an outlet when he penetrates.

Game Ball – JOSH!
Corn Ball – Jamal! Turrible passes all game long, he tried to give them the win all by himself. His passes are not sharp and crisp!
Kirk did a nice job on defense and hit a couple KEY baskets.
Nice all around game!

I saw Teague! He gave us nothing! He can NOT come in status qou and play like he’s one of the boys. He is not one of the boys. Teague has to learn that every second on the court he has to run like hell to the rim, finish or dish to the trailer. If he could do that ONE thing, he will get some quality PT!

I hope all that launching will cease when we play Boston friday evening because that is not his game. ISO Joe is passing out of the double teams a lil quicker. Jamal is Jamal, a great play here a fugged up one there and Marvin is becoming more aggressive. We caught hell beating a cripple team tonight but I ain’t weeping for Orlando. Not a classic but a win none the less.Against a potential playoff opponent,no less. However,
I question some of Drew’s coaching: not exploiting Dwight’s foul situation in the second half by going against him and the refusual to play Teague when Jamar was lighting Hinrich up!
Kudos to Josh for playing on the perimeter defense with the bad knee.
Just for S&G, wonder if Wes Unseld or even Ben Wallace would complain about having to guard taller/stronger players at the center position?

He played great. With WALL dismissed, he had to take over the point. Do you know how hard it is to get dimes with the ‘ZARDS? First you got to have players capable of a-catching the pass, and b-finishing the play. The coach has green lighted him. He’s not out of control up there in D.C.

The kind of things you notice when you are five rows back from the Hawks’ bench:

A good four possessions before LD called timeout to bring Collins back in during crunch time, after Dwight hit a hook shot over Al to cut the Hawks lead to 4, Smoove ran by LD yelling at him to get Collins in the game, yelling “He’s too tall!”

Good win for the Hawks, but there was no reason whatsoever for LD to go small in crunch time. I will never understand his affinity for playing Jamal. Not that it was Jamal’s fault that Orlando made their comeback — Al’s inability (through no fault of his own) to guard Dwight was the reason for it — but if LD didn’t inexplicably think so highly of Jamal, one can presume he would have gone with Collins much earlier in crunch time.

Make Smoove the coach.

Why is it you think we couldnt find a taker for JC expiring contract last month? It hurts me to think we could have got someone out there or a draft pick, but we wasted our opportunity.

That isso is unfortunatle the only way we can play to JJ strength because as most fans have noted on this blog, JJ doesnt work off the ball very well and he needs time to get a good shot. Sometimes they drop, and other times they dont.

I’m not knockin’ JC2, but;
I’m assuming he guarded D.Wade this eve:
D.Wade = 33 pts. & a +19 (+/-)
JC2 = 39 pts. but a -11 (+/-)
JC2 actually raised his shooting %’s:
to 37% (overall) & 22% (3 pt range) = not good.

What does this mean?
He is a high volume gunslinger with poor shooting %’s.
He is a mediocre defender at best / giving up as many as he gets.

However, does this excuse Sund for giving up too much?
Absolutely…..No…..It does not !
I would be okay with the trade had we not thrown in the 1st round pick.
In other words, I’m fine with Hinrich and also Armstrong.
[just not JC2 + the pick]

The only thing that gives me pause in anointing Jordan as a future star (or at least a future solid contributor) is that Mo Evans, a certified bench player if not an outright scrub, has put up some impressive totals as a Wizard as well. If the Wiz are playing loose enough to where Mo can put up point totals in the 20s with regularity, it stands to reason that Jordan probably wouldn’t be putting up eye-popping totals in a more structured scheme.

With that said, he certainly looks like he could match what Jamal has done for his career, even if/when he lands on a better team.

I’ve been checking JC2 stats since they traded this kid. This kid is sick. We all knew he had skills if he could just get some PT. I’ve been screaming this to anyone who would listen. JC with the Wizards is exactly like former NBA journey man point guard Anthony Johnson lighting it up when he was forced to take 20+ shots after the Brawl for the Pacers. A lot of players in this league, and I dare mention Marvin William, can post such numbers if they get the shots and the flexibility from a coach like Flip Or Don Nelson….

It’s too bad the Hawks had to suck so bad for the last few weeks. With this win, if the gap was closer and Orlando’s schedule wasn’t so soft, one might say there’s a realistic shot at catching Orlando. But after the hole the Hawks dug after the All Star break, it is virtually impossible for them to make up 4 games with 7 remaining, even after clinching the season series (and playoff tiebreaker) against them.

Really, as bad as the month of March was, the Hawks did have three quality wins during that otherwise dismal stretch: vs. Chicago, vs. Portland, and now vs. Orlando. It’s too bad they couldn’t stretch some more of them together.

If they can beat Boston on Friday (which is entirely possible given how vulnerable Boston has looked post-Perkins), maybe they can put that stretch behind them and work towards building some confidence going into the playoffs.

Good win by the Hawks. I can’t get too excited, though. I’ve sat through too many blowouts/no shows this season. A win on Friday might just get me back on the bus.

Najeh, hope you enjoyed yourself tonight. Wish I had known you were there. Would love to meet you sometime.

Good game by Josh. Still too many jumpers, however. Tonight they just happened to go in. That is not usually the case.

He is only a rookie. Who the hell on the hawks can create there shots inside or out like jc2. JJ certainly can’t drive to the hoop like this kid.the only way jj can match this kid in scoring would be to take a high volume of shots also, even then he can’t get to the hoop. JJ game is slow while jc2 flies.JJ is on the way down while JC2 is on the way up. I would take jc2 over JJ at a fraction of the cost.

I would have loved for that to happen to the Hawks-any path other than the Magic. I still maintain that Woody is still coaching the Hawks if we play the Cavs and not the Magic last year. JC2 blowing up in Washington, IDK what happened to Wall but they may have won with him? Seems like no defense over there though.

“Why is it you think we couldnt find a taker for JC expiring contract last month? It hurts me to think we could have got someone out there or a draft pick, but we wasted our opportunity.” – James on Pharr Rd

James I think it’s because JC1 had a career year last year but nobody wants to extend a one-dimensional player before we know how a new collective bargaining agreement is going to look. He had fallen off dramatically from last year’s career numbers and nobody was going to give up assets for somebody who is an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. Obviously no contenders thought he could put them over the top and offered the Hawks assets for him.

“If they can beat Boston on Friday (which is entirely possible given how vulnerable Boston has looked post-Perkins), maybe they can put that stretch behind them and work towards building some confidence going into the playoffs.” – Poop

Co-signed. I know I have alot of negative things to say about Sund & LD but in the end it’s the players who will decide their own fate this postseason. Orlando is vulnerable. Gortat, who Bob Rathbun used to say the Hawks made look like Wilt Chamberlain, is gone. Arenas is slower than Bibby. I think we can take them if the players show up.

“I would take jc2 over JJ at a fraction of the cost.” – Rusty

I think that trade was more about getting rid of Bibby than anything else. LD had a personal relationship with him and was going to keep playing him starter’s minutes no matter how much it hurt the team.

Now, Captain Kirk hasn’t been playing well enough to justify 2 first round draft picks. But JC2 another DWade? Please.

Sleepy

There were plenty of takers for JC why do you think he was down around the trade deadline . hes knows that there were trades available to the hawks with teams that wouldve extended him instead he got stuck on a team that didnt want to extend him .

His numbers have fallen over over last years numbers because he actually has bought in to the motion offense and has been moving the ball and trying to let the offense come to him but all of our offense produces for him is threes .

Jamal averaged 18 ppg in Jan on 14 shots per game just like last year and we had our best month of the season going 9-4 . His shots per game are now down to under 10 this month and our record is around .500 .

There is nothing wrong with jamals game besides him trying to produce the same results of last year in a much different role than last year . Hes taken a step back and allowed our big three to carry more of the load statwise and what we are seeing are the results of that .
