Hawks-Cavaliers game thread

Greetings, all-

Hope you’re well. About to head to the court. The lineup: Kirk Hinrich, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford, Jason Collins. Interesting collection. We’ll see how it shakes out.

Gotta run. Will chime in.

Looks like no triple double tonight, atleast the hawks will show some class and not force one for smith like some other players in the league are famous for.

Cavs Announcers:

- Hawks cannot win a 7 game series vs Orlando . . “Dwight Howard will DESTORY us”.

- “Josh Smith can’t handle a 7 game series because he’s too volitile. He’ll just wilt”

Nice games for Al, Josh, and Marvin tonight. I really feel like our biggest strengths are in our frontcourt, and that was definitely true tonight (even though Marvin was playing in the backcourt tonight). 20 and 10 from Al on very efficient shooting, 31 and 7 from Marvin on efficient shooting, and even though Josh had an awful shooting night, he finishes with 13, 18, and 8 (a very nice stat line). Good team performance tonight. Yes, it was against the Cavs, but still, I like the way the team played tonight, on both ends, and there haven’t been many nights during the season where I have felt that way, even when the team has won.

- Hawks cannot win a 7 game series vs Orlando . . “Dwight Howard will DESTORY us”.

This I do not agree with. While Dwight Howard is a force inside, I still feel like it was Orlando’s shooting that killed us more than anything last season. Also, Dwight has looked human against the Hawks so far this season, and if our frontcourt can match his production, Dwight won’t be the deciding player in that series.

- “Josh Smith can’t handle a 7 game series because he’s too volitile. He’ll just wilt”-

Unfortunately, I kind of do agree with this. Josh can be great when he stays focused, but if the Hawks face adversity in a tight series, I think Josh will lose his focus and become an enigma on the court, the way he has in the past. It’s unfortunate, but Josh’s mental state is his biggest hurdle to overcome and ultimately, it’s his biggest weakness. If you can take away his focus, you can take away his game.

It surprises me also. Cleveland fans continue to be incredibly loyal and supportive, even though their city has continually failed to capture championships in any large, mainstream sports. I have to tip my hat to those fans. However, there’s also the fact that Cleveland is not exactly the entertainment capital of the world, so sporting events tend to supply a large portion of the entertainment for Cleveland citizens.

prison mike

Josh Smith averaged 16.3 and 9 against the heat.

18.5 and 5 against the cavs. Following year:

13.7 and 9 against the bucks.

15.8 and 7.8 against the magic.

He’s not the one under performing in the playoffs, probably the guy the guy that got booed by the fans should get your ire.

It’s a shame Houston probably won’t make the playoffs, I like both the Grizzlies and Houston, and I’m not sure the Hornets are really a threat without West, hopefully they fallout and Houston gets the 8th seed.

20+ minutes for Teague in the win. Hawks now 4-2 when Teague plays 20+ and 4-8 when he doesn’t.

LOL @ talking about Cleveland. I guess ya’ll have a point.

Memphis beats San Antonio for the 2nd time this year. That as of right now is your 1 vs 8 matchup in the West.

Memphis may not win that series, but they are NOT scared of the Spurs. Wish we had a guy like Tony Allen to bring off the bench for us.

The Hawks can rest the starter if- The Hawks go 3-5 the 76ers would have to go 9-0. So as soon as we win two or three and the 76ers lose one, we can prepare for the Magic.

^^Wrong. In fact this is the first game he has played 20+ minutes since the trade in which he didn’t start, and nearly all his minutes in this game came when the outcome was still in doubt.

Great win against a lousy team. Mad Dog Marvin showed up and Smoove mostly kept it in check. Hawks seems to play a heck more mature when JJ’s out.

I would jump in, but I know you got this on handled.
Didn’t you just tell ole’ boy, 6-4 in games where Teague started and played a minimum of 20 mins. And, today, even though he didn’t start, the 20 mins were played while the game was in the balances?

Najeh Davenpoop

It was only the Cavs, so I won’t go as far as to say the Hawks are better without Joe. Against better teams, they will likely need Joe’s scoring to bail them out on occasion. The Hawks are 6-4 without him this year, but those 4 losses were all by double digits, including one to Detroit. Let’s see them play like this against a team like Orlando without Joe before talking about the Hawks without Joe being better.

With that said, I think it is fair to say that the Hawks’ ball movement improves without Joe, and this is directly attributable to the fact that Joe takes too damn long to make decisions with the ball — unlike the Hawks’ point guards and Smoove, who get the ball out of their hands much more quickly. They assisted on 78% of their made baskets in this game, as compared with 61% of their made baskets for the season (a number that has fallen over the last couple of months).

Now, ball movement doesn’t necessarily result in good shots for this team — case in point, the play earlier in the game when Al passed up an open jumper to make the “extra pass” to Smoove for an open jumper which he bricked — and against better teams the Hawks tend to be less aggressive going inside, which means the Joe-less Hawks will probably just settle for more jumpers, but it was still good for one game to see a quick passing, decisive Hawks team that attacked the paint and forced the ball inside. And I don’t think that would have happened with Joe in the lineup.

Najeh Davenpoop

Teague’s “garbage minutes” games have all ended up with his minute total being under 20. In every game where he has played 20+ since the Bibby trade, the lion’s share of those minutes have come when the game was still being contested.

The whole point of me posting that stat is to indicate that the Hawks have been able to win games and give Teague meaningful minutes at the same time, and they have also lost plenty of games in which they haven’t given him meaningful minutes. The reason for this is that Teague is actually a solid contributor, not just some developmental project. The last thing I want to see is the majority of Teague’s minutes coming in garbage time.

O'Brien

Najeh,

Another drawback with JJ is sometimes the Hawks continue to go to him even when he is struggling. And as a result, he will take some (tough) shots instead of making the right pass. And guys will continue to defer to him, waiting for him to carry us on his back.

Unfortunately, he has not done that enough this year.

The Hawks played less measured and with great urgency in this game from start to finish.

For me it is more important HOW you play than WHO you play.
When you play YOUR game and impose YOUR will?

The opponent becomes less relevant.

To be honest, I don’t think the Hawks care to have so-called Home Court advantage. They don’t want to hear any MVP chants for Dwight & ‘nem.
Much less … Boo – Birds while the game is still being contested in a 7 game series.

They get more love on the road, I guess.

I do understand the insatiable irresistibility of an optimistic feeling. It’s like the candy that is a 22- footer with :16 left on the clock – inside of Josh Smith’s deluded mind.

But.

The Hawks have been (not just beaten, but) humiliated by the last several playoff teams they have faced.

Cheering up and showing optimism after wins against the Nets and the Cav’s is simply disconnecting from reality. If that makes some of you happy. Go for it.
