Atlanta Hawks: What happened to Joe’s mojo?

Sorry for the late post, blog people. Don’t ever believe ‘em when they tell you the pupil dilation wears off in an hour . . . .

The Hawks aren’t going anywhere if J.J. doesn’t get in a groove. OK, they may not go anywhere even if he does, but they’ve got no chance if his form doesn’t improve as he finishes up his least productive year since his first one in Atlanta and his least efficient year since his days in Phoenix.

The problem is opponents aren’t making it easy for J.J. to find his form. He still draws swarming double teams most nights and it’s seemed to knock him off kilter. There are times when J.J. looks as if he’s not sure what to do, and I think that’s a big reason why he’s sounded so despondent lately.

Clearly the Hawks need Joe (and Jamal for that matter) to find a way to score. Passing off every time he gets doubled isn’t the answer, since it takes Atlanta’s most talented scorer out of the offense and plays into the strategy of the defense.

What’s J.J.’s thinking when he gets doubled?

“Early, I just try to make the right basketball play and get guys in position to where they can make baskets,” J.J. said. “But if it’s not going right I do tend to force it every now and then because I just feel I have to do something other than just sit there and accept the double team and pass the ball.”

Is that because as the Hawks’ top scorer (and top dog) for so many years he feels a responsibility to lift them out of their current funk?

“Yeah,” he said, “but there is only so much I can do. So I just try to give em what I’ve got.”

I asked L.D. if the only way J.J. will find more rook to work is if the Hawks make opponents pay for the doubles by making the right plays when J.J. passes out. He said that’s only part of the equation and he stumbled upon another factor when he couldn’t sleep the other night.

Drew turned on the television at 3 a.m. and came across a replay of the Thunder-Heat game from a couple weeks back:

“I am sitting there watching Kevin Durant and they are double-teaming him all over the place. But he goes quick. He gets his shot quick. He comes off the screens looking to shoot it quick. And he’s accepting double teams and making plays out of double teams. Sometimes it calls for showing a willingness to make the right plays out of double teams. If they see you are a reluctant passer the heat will be turned up even more. Not saying that’s what’s happening with us but those are the things you have to do with double teams. If you are a scorer, knowing that you are going to be double-teamed you have got to go into your shot and your offense a little quicker. If not, you have to make a play out of a double team. The other thing that affects double teams is where you are on the floor. It’s a lot easier to double team when you are on one side of the floor than when you are in the middle of the floor. We’ve gone to where doing more things out of middle of the floor.”

Sounds good in theory, but “quick” has never been J.J.’s style. He’s been at his best deliberately setting up his opponent and using his size to get off his shot (which obviously doesn’t work against double teams). I’m not even sure J.J. can play a more dynamic style like Durant, D-Wade, et al.

The good news is Joe says his health is not an issue, so at least you can scratch that off the list of potential problems.

“You are always going to have your nick-nacks from the first month until the season is over with,” he said. “That’s common.”

atlgent, what would a blog or sports talk radio or most any conversation about sports be without idiotic comments?

I like the new feature ESPN is usimg with MLD broadcasts, it shows the location of every pitch relative to the strike zone in real time. They have it sitting right over home plate as the batter hits.

I’ll bitch about the Hawks later tonight after they give us new material to work with.

@Northcyde-Man Im at work. That has got to be the longest comment in history. lol But you are right. This offense doesnt work for us. It reminds me of a rapper who already has some rhymes together and just puts it to the first beats he hears. They dont match. But we are going to be okay.

@JHAN-You are not looking at the big picture. First of all, they play better when the highlight factory is packed. Not to mention how Shaq could help in practice with the other Centers on the team. Now think about this one stat. We are next to last in second chance points. So think about all the games we lost by 1-5 points. Just having Shaq healthy for 15 games could have made a difference.

after going down to phillips and watching the Hawks lose consecutive home games vs NY and LA i said..

“@ this point.. i think shots are coming from guys that dont need to be shooting the damn ball. open looks too. i think Joe needs to focus on getting up 20+ shots a night.”

8 games later, this is still the case. an aggressive Joe makes those around him better. passive Joe, well.. i present to you the Atlanta hawks since about mid Feb.

Mr. Manning!

Danny Manning’s father passed away, (RIP).
IDK, but he played for six teams in the NBA.
He was 68 years old.

Condolences to the Manning family and Ex-Hawks player.

I think everything has went downward for the hawks since the bubba crew took over this blog page and started a pro mediocrity program featuring Al (im allergic to defense) Horford.

Mike Woodson has by default proven that he was a 1st class coach. His replacement Drew has done less with more talent than Woodson had.

The bottom line is the hawks have a true allstar in JJ and a reserve in Horford due to coaches voting. However the fans clearly dont see Al as a reserve allstar.

Out side of JJ the hawks are marginally average, which proves Woodson was able to take an average team to a high level. He would have taken them higher if he had been given a center.

Thanks Bubba Crew

Joe Johnson ultimately wants to score more than pass when double covered. He will exhaust the shot clock to the bare minimum but once he realizes he can’t beat his man or the double, he attempts a hard ass shot or passes it off to the next hawk that has to do something with 5 seconds left.

It is what it is.

Jerome Jurenovich

Asks Drew about Locker Room drama, contention and asked him to comment. Of course, coach says what happens in vegas … You know the rest. Because, Jerome actually travels with the team and on the flights, I guess he would know and just dropped us a dime on the fellas chemistry and a little in-fighting?

But hey! They just stunting like their Daddy. (See owners)
Just like the 8 orangutans, throwing a little feces at each other.

(I stole the 8 orangutans analogy from the original Najeh).
The most telling, realistic and profound analogy of all times to describe The ASKG tenure as owners of all time. That analogy for me, will go down in history!

Keep ‘em coming – Najeh!

“I would offer him JJ (preferably with) Marvin for [J. Barera, Brandon Haywood , C.Butler] and or Shawn Marion.” – James the Plumber

Dallas was one of the possible destinations for JJ in the offseason that I have discussed in addition to New Jersey. Both of these franchises have owners with cash to burn. However, the players you are talking about taking back here are dead weight. Heywood is a stiff with a huge long term contract… taking him doesn’t solve the problem of getting out from under JJ’s albatross.

What I would go after in a trade with Dallas would be a straight up sign and trade, Joe Johnson for Tyson Chandler.

blame the upper management, its not all jj’s fault. this team has no bench, no point guard really, marvin williams is a joke, and the hawks have no size in the paint. this all adds up to a early 1st rd exit this year from the playoffs sorry hawk fans.

Sounds like everyone is seeing the same thing with the Hawks. Some of it is coaching. I feel the rest of it is having a low basketball IQ. Most if the things discussed are things we learned very early as kids playing basketball. The Pro game is mental. Look at the great/championship players and watch how they played. They all had high basketball IQ’s. Some things your coach should not have to tell you. JJ has a very low IQ and no leadership. Look at Magic, Bird, Isiah, Kobe(now) and the Lakers, Tim Duncan and team and the Celtics the players talk throughout the game. JJ probably
couldn’t tell you what is going on on the court and that is why he does what he does. Talent is not enough in the pros (see Lebron James). Basketball IQ helps you WIN. Share your thoughts please.
