Greetings, all-
Hang another L on the tree. If you’re still counting, the Hawks have lost four of five, eight of 11 and 14 of 21. I’d say it’s looking more and more like Philadelphia will catch the Hawks, which would likely put them in a first-round matchup with the Miami Heat. Yikes. The other possibility is Boston.
- I know you’re wondering, so I’ll bring you Larry Drew’s comments on why Jeff Teague got his 12th DNP-CD, particularly with a little guy like Lou Williams making hay (17 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 20 minutes).
“That wasn’t the problem,” Drew said of the defense of Williams. “I thought we did a really good job on Louis. A couple times we played him a little too soft and he just jumped right up and shot it. We actually fouled him twice at the 3-point line to send him to the free-throw line. That wasn’t the problem. We had the game under control. We just let it get away.”
I’m not sure what to say. Maybe it didn’t come out quite like the way he intended.
- Another symbol of the Hawks’ status as a rising power bit the dust, a few days after the five consecutive years with an improved record. With the loss, the Hawks will not finish at or above .500 in this brutal month, ending their string of 15 consecutive months with a record of .500 or better. (If memory serves, the stat the Hawks touted was consecutive winning months, and then they went .500 in February, so it was consecutive months of .500 ball or better, and now it’s kaput.)
- Interesting quote, in some ways, from Al Horford: “I think we played well. We just kind of ran out of gas at the end.” Perhaps it was because this was a game the Hawks might have lost even when they were playing well — against a surging team in its building on the back end of a back-t0-back – but it doesn’t sound like the Horford I’m used to hearing after losses.
- Joe Johnson was pretty downcast, more than anyone in the locker room I saw. The highlights:
“Down the stretch, I just think we don’t understand who should get the ball. Throughout the game, everyone’s free-flow playing, taking shots, making plays. … (But in the last five minutes), we don’t understand or we don’t know who that person is. If you notice the last four or five minutes, (expletive), I don’t think we know who should take the (expletive) shot.
On if it’s because plays aren’t being called: “I don’t know. It’s frustrating to me. You’ve got to go with the flow.”
More Johnson: “That’s why we look a little stagnant and lost the last three or four to five minutes, because nobody knows and everybody’s out there just jacking up shots.”
Finally: “I’m just frustrated. Like I said, we do a lot of talking but at the same time, we get out there on the court and we do nothing right, even though we know what to do.”
I’ll say this. Johnson is the one who seems most bothered by the way the team’s playing.
- A very strong game by Josh Smith – 33 points and 12 rebounds. Played closer to the basket.
“I was just trying to play off the guys that were getting plays called for them. I know they were trapping Joe heavily and I was just trying to put the onus on myself not to settle.”
- Kirk Hinrich sprained his right thumb in the second quarter. He still ended up playing 38 minutes, but he only scored three points after that. He said he’d be fine.
- Drew played seven guys – off the bench, Jamal Crawford and Zaza Pachulia were the only ones who got in. Both contributed well, I thought. Crawford had some pop in the rather free-flowing first half.
Horford said the minutes, particularly on the second night of a back to back, was a factor.
“I think it was,” he said. “I thought we were solid, but they just kind of kept bringing it. We had a good effort tonight, we just couldn’t get it done.”

LOL @ JJ’s comments. I guess since people don’t want him taking the shots via ISO down the stretch anymore, he’s lost as well.
JJ . . stop whining man. You’re the man being paid like a franchise player. YOU TAKE THE DAMN SHOT. And make sure you make more than you miss, so that people won’t get on you.
You either take it upon yourself to be the man, or you simply fade into the background like you’ve been doing way too often. If you would just get the ball and SHOOT, instead of worrying about setting other people up, maybe you’d be more efficient in the 4th quarter.
You see Smith doesn’t worry about who says what about his shot selection. I think you might ought to take up his mentality, and play like a confident shooter, instead of a passive set-up man.
YOU demand the ball, and YOU make the play. Either for yourself, or for others.

At the end of the day, it’s going to be YOU JJ that takes the most heat for the decline of the Hawks, seeing that you have a superstar like contract. So you either have to develop a superstar’s mentality, or settle for the status quo.
That doesn’t mean jack up 25 shots a night. But it does mean having an impact on the game. 4 shots by your main guy at halftime, isn’t going to cut it.
The team did right in deferring to Smith tonight. He played very well. But you’re the supposed “man”. Either start taking on “man responsibilites” or just stop talking altogether.

Northside im with u,that is the worst thing that i would want my so called”highest paid”player to say..
Its like in Rocky III when pauly was laying on the training room table talking to rocky after Mr.T. knocked him down and was having issues with his heart.
Rocky looked at his wife and said,”Adrian, what am i supposed to do” and pauly grabbed him by his robe and lit into him about how in the hell could he ask his wife a question like that and to step up and be a man and take care of business..
This just puts such a low light on JJ to me..I just hate to have read that comment..

Buddy – It was LD’s abysmal decision to go with a 7 man rotation on the second night of a back to back played in a different city. Stupid. And Al basically said as much.
About Lou Williams and Teague
“That wasn’t the problem,” Drew said of the defense of Williams. “I thought we did a really good job on Louis. A couple times we played him a little too soft and he just jumped right up and shot it. We actually fouled him twice at the 3-point line to send him to the free-throw line. That wasn’t the problem. We had the game under control. We just let it get away.”
If somebody wanted to, they could post all of the stupid comments LD has made, make a book, and it would probably be a comedy best seller.
I’m still just stunned at the prolonged, continual stupidity in almost every facet of the game.. Everybody makes mistakes. LD lives one.

No worries, these guys are all simply in it for the cash anyway and they have plenty of that so they’ll be fine until they end up blowing that too. Not a winner in the lot. One and done will be here soon enough and we can go back to ignoring that they exist until they ruin another draft pick and or pay another guy max money to be the equivalent of a wet paper bag.

Hawks 80, Sixers 74 at the start of the 4th quarter. Kirk/Jamal/Marvin/Al/Zaza (notably, no Smoove who was ballin’ all night) allow the Sixers to go on an 11-0 run over the first 2:15 of the 4th. Lou Williams (who I believe was being guarded by Jamal) scores 5 of those points.
Smoove and Joe check back in with the Sixers up 85-80. Hawks lose by the same margin.

In a vacuum, he’s right. A road loss to a surging playoff team is nothing to freak out over. But considering the nearly two solid months of sucking that have preceded this loss, just saying “we played well and it got away from us” doesn’t fly.

Yeah, 17 points in 8 shot attempts… 5 points during the Sixers’ game changing 11-0 run at the beginning of the 4th quarter… yeah, this wasn’t a problem at all. No way the Hawks’ best point guard defender could have possibly helped.

I’m also in northcyde’s camp on the JJ thing. Joe may talk like he really cares about losing, but where is he when it’s crunch time? He’s not a reliable go-to guy in the 4th or any other quarter. For Joe, I think the whole season has been about failing to live up to the huge contract; it’s gotten into his head. Ditto Jamal, whose failure to approach last season’s success has to have caused his stock as a free agent to drop.

SteveW, I thought the shortened rotation was predictable. LD knows his job is on the line… say what you want about Mark Bradley but he’s been here a long, long time. It’s not an insignificant thing when the local columnists announce to the world that the local NBA team has quit on its coach.
Going into the 4th they had a 6 point lead and you could just see the expression on Drew’s face when they lost it. He looked like a man who sees the axe hovering overhead. He went with the guys he trusts most to execute his game plan and try to save his job. The reason he’s going to lose it is because he should have developed trust with more than 7 players by now.

Yes I will take a first round series with Orlando over dropping to 7th place and facing Boston, Miami or Chicago. We fall out of 5th place and we get swept in the first round. Orlando is vulnerable. They traded away most of their size for Hedo and Arenas, two players who are in rapid decline. These are not the Orlando Magic who swept the Hawks last year. Of course, they’re more well-coached than the Hawks. But the Hawks could give them a fight on pure talent.

In Joe’s defense, when he is getting trapped, (which he has the past 5 or so games), and he throws the ball out, doesn’t mean that player should keep it and force up a shot. It SHOULD only mean for that player to re-leave him temporary and throw the ball BACK to Joe to make something happen in the 4th. Just think about it, in the 4th quarter of a Miami’s game or the Lakers game, when they need for Kobe or LeBron, or Wade to take over, the surrounding players LOOKS for their ’superstar’ to take over. If Kobe/Wade/LeBron is being trapped, they throw the ball out to IMMEDIATELY receive it back. HOW OFTEN DO ANY OF THE HAWKS PLAYERS DO THAT FOR JOE??? NO ONE..well, maybe Horford is the only one who does that but NO ONE ELSE TRUST JOE TO WIN THE GAME FOR US! I don’t think Joe meant it literally that no one knows who should shoot the ball, I believe he was being sarcastic about it that there are too many selfish & jealous players on this team that aren’t happy with Joe’s contract and are hell bent on making Joe’s life with the Hawks MISERABLE!! I believe Joe IS aggregated and upset with how this team is playing of late, he just isnt a vocal Wade/Lebron/Kobe type of player..he is who he is and he cant help that. The guys on the team just should do their part and allow Joe to shine for this team. I look at it like Joe is in the same boat as Teague. Teague NEEDS minutes to improve his game while Joe NEEDS the right amount of respect on a daily basis to be affective. JUST MY TAKE ON THE SITUATION!!

To sum all of this up….
This has to be the most dysfunctional yet fully operational team I’ve seen.
Does anyone here remember the Falcons ownership experience with the Smith family? Can you see any similarities?
If you think ASG as cheap and budget conscious, I remember reading reports of Rankin Smith walking through the Falcons locker room asking the equipment managers to pick up used tape roll remnants in order to use them again.
The Smith family was caught in a losing spiral affect as a result of signing marginal talent (Players and Coaching Staff) while expecting and collecting higher revenues.
Let’s just face it. The ASG will cash in by selling out while leaving the new owner(s) stuck for the next 6 years (Thanks PMC – March 23, 2011, 11:31 pm) with this financially strapped mess of a payroll.
Good luck to the new owner(s) who will step into this one…..

Lawson just another pg the Hawks missed out on. He was going to fall to the Hawks and Denver traded up to pick him one pick ahead of us. We ended up with Teague, which still isn’t bad for late first round. But damn… we almost had Ty Lawson.

@rusty,
I believe Joe is playing like ‘crap’ b/c he tries to force the action sometimes cause he knows he wont be receiving the ball back anytime soon. I think same goes for Josh. Both Josh and Joe shouldnt be on the team together if u ask me. I think Charles Barkley said it b4 also about a couple of years ago. He said,” Either Joe or Josh must go for that team to go anywhere.” I didnt believe him then but I do now. If I had to choose between the two, I would let Joe go and keep Josh. I also believe the reason both Josh & Jamal played so very well last season was b/c they thought Joe would be on another team this season. Josh wanted to prove to ASG that he could be the face of the ATLANTA HAWKS. He played totally under control, attempted ONLY 6 3pters, should have easily been an ALL-STAR that year..I mean, IMO, that was Josh’s best NBA season of his career thus far!! Jamal also was at the top of his game last season..He wanted to stay in Atlanta b/c his baby mother & child lives here, his 1st time playing on a team that made it to his 1st playoff series, and played well enough to earn the 6th Man award..Jamal was playing for an extension from the Hawks and he probably too assume Joe would be gone so he could get the money he wanted while sliding into Joe’s footsteps if he was gone. UNFORTUNATELY NONE OF THAT HAPPENED!! Joe received the biggest contract of any player that year, causing Josh to get angry and revert back to the Josh of old and causing Jamal to demand an extension OR to be traded!! Well, neither happen for Jamal causing him to have an on-court meltdown cause lately, he hasn’t been able to throw a penny into the ocean. I say ALL this to say, that is why Joe may feel the team is jealous and selfish cause of his HUGE PAYCHECK!!

“Down the stretch, I just think we don’t understand who should get the ball. Throughout the game, everyone’s free-flow playing, taking shots, making plays. … (But in the last five minutes), we don’t understand or we don’t know who that person is. If you notice the last four or five minutes, (expletive), I don’t think we know who should take the (expletive) shot.” — Joe Johnson —
And there’s your problem.
That explains why Al doesn’t get the ball in the 4th qtr.
[which has been discussed on here many times]
Joe thinks he gets the ball in the 4th.
Josh is perpetually whining about trust.
LD doesn’t trust Teague.
If Marvin gets it he’s gonna jack it up…he don’t care.
Jamal’s thinking…well LD wants me to get going;
” I’m suppose to shoot ”.
It’s not trust…It’s chaos.

Hawks are a worst team by far then last years team. The Atlanta Zombie’s play on their heels during these past 21 games. Theres no leader out there, just seems like most of them want to just end the season and take off. You know it would seem like if you paid millions of dollars to perform then i’d say that youre fulfilling your agreement to your contract.
Because i’m sure if the Hawks were not fulfilling their end of a contract, the player and his agent would be all over the hawks Mgmt.
There needs to be a new collective bargaining agreement made……….. Only pay a player based on performance every year and see how many stay in basketball.
These guy’s are so spolied, getting 100,000 a minute or a game and under perform on most nights. They sign a 5 year contract and play great only 1 year.
Its not entirely the Coach’s fault. But if it was me, i’d take out most of those players that didnt wanna play, give them less minutes and only put players that really want to be out there.
Players like Kobe Bryant play hard every night eventhough he makes millions. What makes him so good is that on every play he is aggressive and looks for ways to help his team win and involve other players in the game.
We gotta stop pandering to these players that are selfish individuals and are not there to win but to collect a check on friday.
The Coach can try to motivate, run plays, encourage but once that player steps onto the court its up to him to perform at a high level.
Play the Rookies i’d say………… This starting lineup for the Hawks is killing us and before you know it well drop 2 spots below Philly and New York.

Ok so, once again my Hawks rebuilding plan:
1. The Hawks have a major leadership void and it starts at the top with the dysfunctional ASG. In this economy they may not be able to find a buyer, so they need to protect their investment as best they can. Step 1 to regain some faith from Atlanta fans is to immediately, before the playoffs even begin, fire Larry Drew. Prove that you are not so cheap that you can’t burn $1m to pay for a mistake and a bad hire and go look for a coach that can get this team to reach anything close to its potential.
2. Fire Rick Sund. He has a HORRIBLE track record of coaching hires… Larry Drew AND BOB WEISS???? He cannot be trusted to find the coach that can turn this franchise around.
3. Trade Joe Johnson. The most likely scenario is New Jersey, since they have an owner with unlimited funds and a deadline to improve the team before Deron Williams leaves as a free agent. To Cleveland for Antawn Jamison is a possibility. Dan Gilbert also has an open check book but he may not want JJ because he would hurt their draft position without actually making them good. Another possibility is Dallas, where Mark Cuban is desparate to win a championship and his core is aging rapidly. We would have to take back Brendan Haywood and some other garbage but we could use a center.
4. Trade Josh Smith. He’s my favorite Hawk, and I love when he plays like he did last night. But his role on the team is identical to Horford’s. They are both jump shooting power forwards. Josh’s contract will run out sooner, so he should be traded while he still has value. You don’t want to extend him long term because then you don’t have money to fill out other positions on the roster. Marvin is untradeable so you build around him, Teague and Horford. Hopefully with Jamal Crawford gone, Marvin can finally get consistent shots and become a consistent performer.

Horford said the minutes, particularly on the second night of a back to back, was a factor. “We just kind of ran out of gas there at the end,” center Al Horford said.
I wonder if anybody told that to LD.
“That wasn’t the problem,” Drew said of the defense of Williams. “I thought we did a really good job on Louis.”
Really? 17 points in 20 minutes, 5-8 shooting. And he considers that a really good job? Kirk was hurting, Jamal is horrible on defense, but once again, no minutes for Teague.
On 790 the zone yesterday, Sekou Smith said something happened to this team right about the all star break (but he doesnt know it was).
I agree with northcyde. Something happened between LD and Teague that we dont know about. Because given the results on the court, how does he not even give Teague any minutes on the second of a back to back, with the starting PG hurt, and Jamal ineffective at PG?
I wont be surprised if we fall to 6th and play Miami.
I guess Rick can no longer brag about improving our record every season, or about consecutive months with winning records, or top 4 team with home court.

Good game by Josh Smith, but…..who wants to bet he goes right back to jacking jumpers on Saturday night? He played well last night because he actually played hard. He had good movement and attacked the basket. When he does that, he’s good. The problem is that he won’t do that on Saturday. He’ll go right back to being the waste of talent that he is.

Hey guys… I totally love this Hawks Blog community. You guys keep me locked into what is really going on with the team beyond the box scores. I’m from Atlanta and love all the Atlanta sports teams. But it’s been a tough year for us. A lot of potential and no payoff in baseball and football. Unfortunately, this Hawks team has run out of gas already during the regular season. It has been painful to watch – beyond frustrating really. On any given night, this team could have no chance to compete with the other team (no matter who they are playing). Usually fans like to say that the other way around. In the mind of the fan, there is always hope that our brightest stars will truly shine. We can beat anybody, right? Wrong. This team’s stars are burned out. The effort required to be a success in the NBA is more than any one (or few) players can create on their own, with the exception of only a handful of truly exceptional superstars. And we don’t have one of them. We shouldn’t need one of them to be successful. There is a broad enough swath of talent on this team to be a success in the right system, circumstances and under the right management.
Honestly, though – I think I’m done. Done caring about this team. It’s just not fun anymore. This team has a couple good games in them – Tops. But there is no way they can consistently get it done. They cannot even COMPETE every night. Time and time again, I get my hopes up because the team is playing well with each other and building momentum, and then they fall onm their face. And it’s right back to square one.
It pains me to admit it, but the Hawks are going nowhere. It starts right at the top. Ownership/management has squeezed the life out of this team. The coach and their “star” max-contract player just do not have what it takes to lead. They have pieces (Horford, Smith, Teague) that remain are really intriguing – these guys are or could be really good players. But most of their players are teases. Joe has lost a few steps and a shot. Marvin never could pull it all together. Crawford is back to being the sloppy player that he has been his entire career. Hinrich – while I love the energy he brings – has made me think maybe there is a good reason he has not been starting at point guard on other teams (namely his handle). The team collectively is to blame for their current woes. All the players are not working together and getting it done. But the owners, GM, and coach are tasked with the job of putting their players in the best position to be successful. And they have engineered an entirely uninspiring lot. We Atlantans deserve better than this. And I, for one, am at the point where – I almost don’t care anymore.
There clearly needs to be a change at the top. Get rid of the GM and coach. Hire people with vision and management/motivational skills. And then lower ticket prices and spend money on your marketing campaign. Atlanta is full of sports fans. Show us that you can provide a good product and we will show you the Love.

I stated when the Hawks first made the trade for Hinrich that it would be a bad trade only if Jordan Crawford becomes a very good young player. Well he scored 25 and had 10 assist last night in a losing effort for the Wizards, this was his 4th straight 20 point game for the Wizards. I had a brief exchange with a couple of other bloggers, my point was if the Hawks were going to trade a good young player they should have tried to get a good young player in exchange, offer a little more and tried to get that McGhee kid from the Wizards. One blogger stated that would never happen because the Wizards know what they had in McGhee. I agree, but my point was the Hawks should have known what the had in Jordan Crawford. You make a trade in midseason for two reasons, to win it all now or build for the future. No way Hinrich was going to put the Hawks over the top to win now, and they just threw away a big part of the futre by giving away Jordan Crawford. Jamal Crawford is gone after this season Jordan could have took his place. The Wizards have a brighter future than the Hawks right now, they have a nice young core in a budding superstar in Wall, Javale McGhee, and yes Jordan Crawford. I am a Hawks fan but I am also a realist, the Hawks will lose in the first round in 5 games or maybe even get swept.

303, you’re dead on! This is becoming comical. I didn’t even see the first 3 quarters because I knew it was going to be determined in the 4th.
Najeh, how many 4th quarter leads have we lost this year? We are at best a 3 quarter team.
Our coach (FormerAssistantToWoody) is lost; you tell me you can’t find minutes for your best PG…..your tenure is over. Why doesn’t Larry just send Teague to the D-League and truly humiliate him? He has taken any life out of a team that has limitations before heading into this season, yet Sund couldn’t come up with anything to build a championship contender.
Sund and Larry has mailed it in. The Bibby deal is not going so well right now, and all it takes to improve our side is to play Teague.
How bad is it that the ENTIRE blog is begging for Teague to play and Larry can’t see it. No more excuses because Larry isn’t trying to win ball games. He is trying to prove who is in charge. His ego is beyond reproach now. To let Captain Josh continue to shoot jumpers is on you! Woody had finally gotten to him. He thinks he’s Kobe Bryant now.

And J to the A,
good point about the 7 man rotation. You cant be this late in the regular season only playing that amount of guys, you must keep a flow of atleast 8 or 9. Guys are banged up more this time of season and you need all the fire power you can get but “Woody Lite” appears to not get it. Thats why they continue to “jack up shots” cause they are tired.
ATL will not do anything until management issues are addressed. Then give the GM some money to work with. And blow this core, cut ties and take there losses with Marvin, Jamal or JS(as much as i hate to say it).

When is someone going to address the real problem with this organization? It starts with the front office and rolls downward. The Hawks have become content with mediocrity. Year in and year out they aspire to be the Eastern conferences’ 4,5, or 6 seed. Only to be ousted in the first round of the playoffs. The contract they gave Joe Johnson was a travesty in itself. I’m not hating, but no way in hell is JJ worth the franchise tag placed on him. He’s not even one of the top 15 players in the league. This team will never be amongst the leagues best. It’s not in it’s DNA, period. The front office is the main problem. They simply don’t know how to put together a winning team. Nor do they care to. We’d all do better putting our enthusiasm behind the Falcons. At least Blank and his front office care about winning.

Jamal’s rookie year;
61 games played, 8 starts: 35% FG, 35% from 3, 5 ppg, 2 assists in 17 mpg.
Jordan’s rookie year:
With ATL; 16 games played, 0 starts; 35% FG, 33% from 3, 4 ppg, 2 rebs, in 10 mpg
With Washington; 14 games played, 6 starts; 39% FG, 17% from 3, 14 ppg, 3 apg, 2 steals and 3 turnovers.
He needs to work on his shot selection and his defense, but for a rookie, he is showing a lot of potential.

The ego of Larry is beyond reeling back in now.
Our 40-32 record is looking really pedestrian at this point. We aren’t going to just start winning again. Our team after the break has not been good. I agree with you totally and that is my point when talking about Jordan Crawford. The Hawks gave this kid away and he have shown alot of potential. Atlanta fans grip and moan and wish for players like Dwight Howard and othe future free agents that they will never get but don’t raise heck about good players they had and the sorry organization lets go. Atlanta fans must demand better judgement from their teams ownership and management and giving away a talented kid like Jordan Crawford is a good example. If the ownership don’t sell the team then Larry Drew will be back as coach and this team will lose a couple of players and they will be worse than they are this year. The writing is on the wall.

I don’t see Larry being fired either, no matter how bad they finish.
They will go through another blah blah offseason and if you know the ASG, they don’t make bold moves.
Sund will probably be back as well….but Sund sure can’t sell the improved core each and every year.
Why is it that everyone except Hawks’ management saw this coming?
Does anyone miss Mike Bibby? 22MPG 6PPG 3.4APG ….I don’t. He really is lucky to be with the Heat and will be a non-factor for them going forward.

Truth being, I liked the idea of JC1 starting and JC2 coming off the bench had we not signed JJ. That would have been a much better result based on where we are today….we are stuck in cap sludge and won’t get out unless we purge the roster.
We have had a few opportunities to build for the future, but instead we stuck with our core and are now looking to stay above .500.
Folks, the 2011-12 season does not look promising at this stage unless we throw out the regime that sells opponents’ jerseys for the Philips experience.

JeJe,
Mark my words. The ASG know that keeping Drew next season (unless there is a lockout) will cost them far more than his measly salary because the eyes of the fanbase are wide open to what this team’s REAL problems lie – with LARRY DREW. It is not the players lack of effort. It lies with Larry Drew’s X’s and O’s,etc.
I ask you, who would pay good money to buy season tickets to watch this hot mess??? Yea, I know Section 303 would, but he has an unhealthy co-dependent relationship with this team.
Also the ASG knows that if they keep Larry Drew for another season they will lose another year of Teague’s development. If he won’t play him now, what’s there to make us think he will play him next year?
In summary, it will cost the ASG far more to keep Larry Drew than to fire his butt.

Buddy – I know the reason LD went 7 deep on the 2nd night of a back to back in a different city, with a later than normal 1st night because of the the national tv.
I just think it is sadly, comically dumb.
We bloggers could see here and laughingly and absurdly come up with scenarios no rational coach from pee wee level to this level would ever do, and LD will do them. I’ve joked about things that LD then says he will incorporate.
We should blow out NJ Saturday night at home, but if DeRon is playing, or even if he’s not, you never know with this guy as Coach.

Under a normal, rational Coach, JC2 was the perfect draft pick. Give a scorer a year to “season”, then he replaces Jamal, and you probably don’t miss a beat. Then you have 2 young, exciting G’s to help your team win. Pendegraft and Sund had done their job.
Under LD, you have him playing Mo’ and Bibby to the Bataan death march (no offense fellas), totally destroying the team. So in an effort to save the Coach from his self, you have to trade Bibby, Mo’, JC2 and a 1st pick, to get an upgrade on Bibby.
When the solution was just play Teague 15 to 20 per night, rest Bibby more so he’s fresher, and it’s a win, win.
I was in a corporation once. There was this guy that was unbelievable at what he did. Off the charts. And there was the Presidents son-in-law, that he desperately wanted to promote to vice president. But the entire, fairly large corporation wanted the more talented guy. And every time they let the talented guy make a presentation, he totally, unintentionally humiliated the President and the son-in-law.
Guess who’s VP today and who’ no longer with the company? The son-in-law is VP of course. For some reason I’m reminded of that every time I see Teague play.
Wonder why LD suddenly got Teague out of the rotation when it was time to play against Bibby and Miami? He would have looked like a total imbecile. I mean he already does, but even worse.

“I agree with northcyde. Something happened between LD and Teague that we dont know about. Because given the results on the court, how does he not even give Teague any minutes on the second of a back to back, with the starting PG hurt, and Jamal ineffective at PG? ”
To be honest, I don’t think this is necessarily true. I think LD’s refusal to play Teague is a result of simple incompetence and not any kind of animosity or contempt for Teague. LD likes players who make shots, and even though Jamal doesn’t make shots with any kind of consistency, he still has a longer track record in that department than Teague. Sund had to save LD from himself when it came to his “shotmakers” Bibby and Mo, but unfortunately he didn’t find a way to trade Jamal and force LD’s hand completely.

“his percentages are awful. you look stupid to bring his name up because his game is worse than jamal’s.”
All good points — it was clear from day one that Jordan pretty much had no concept of shot selection. But at the same time, who knows whether a playoff caliber coach on a playoff caliber team with a more structured offensive scheme might have been able to develop Jordan’s ability to shoot more selectively by now. At the very least, the fact that he can put up these kind of numbers as a rookie on a bad team hints towards the possibility of him putting up numbers approaching those at a more efficient rate on a good team as he grows and becomes a better player.

“Over the first 9:45 of the fourth quarter, Al Horford scored four points on three shots. Josh Smith scored two points (with the bucket assisted by Horford) on four shots. Joe Johnson scored two points on two shots. Jamal Crawford and Zaza Pachulia were both scoreless on two shots each.”

And then it’s:
The Magic at Home
Celtics at Home
@ Houston
San Antonio at Home
@ Indy, who is fighting for a playoff spot
Before we close out @ Washington, and get to see JC2 possibly punk us and humiliate LD further (if he’s still here)
Miami, which will possibly be resting the Big 3, while we won’t be resting anyone according to LD
And @ Charlotte, which should be a W. Even though they beat us last time at Home, coming back from 17 down,

“The Hawks have some nagging injuries, but Drew said he wouldn’t give players games off even if the Hawks are locked into the fifth seed before the end of the regular season.”
That has got to be classic. From Hawks Notes, Tuesday night, Larry Drew Settles on a Lineup
That’s also were we learned Teague was def. out of the rotation for the remainder of the season:
“Drew said there are certain games when he still may use a “big” lineup with Jason Collins or Zaza Pachulia at center. He said Pachulia, guard Jamal Crawford and swingman Damien Wilkins are “for sure” among the bench rotation and guard Jeff Teague and Collins also could get minutes.”

I am reading apples and oranges, apples being JC2 and no conscience on teh court and Teague who has proven he can play with Ty Lawson and whoever else he’s compared to. He’s our closest thing to Westbrook.
There is not another player on this roster that can do what Teague does, while all the other parts on this team are interchangeable. Perhaps that’s why Larry doesn’t like him: he’s one dimensional!
Its safe to say that had we kept JC2, we wouldn’t be any better than we are now….how many more low percentage jump shooters do you want on this team? JJ and JC1 don’t have enough shots going up?
With Teague, we are just flat out better. I don’t care what Larry thinks. He is just taking his own career down with him. I know Larry would play Drew II over him, so get him out of here, before he convinces the ASG that his son needs major minutes.

They also wonder how much better JT would be and make the team with the starters. They also know KH is a B level pt guard who can play SG. Well, Jeff T’s PER is now equal with Jamals, and Jeff give you alot better D.
Jeff’s PER is 14.3, Marvin’s is 13.3, ZaZa’s is 11.8, Kirk’s is 11.3
Jeff averages more blocks per game than ZaZa and Marvin.
Jeff averages more steals than Marvin. Despite playing less than half his minutes.
On a per minute average, Jeff:
Far more steals than Josh Smith, by far our leader in that category
More points than Hinrich or Marvin
Almost as many blocks as Al
Far more assists than Kirk, Jamal, Josh, or Al
Far more boards than Jamal or Kirk. He almost outrebounds Jamal straight up in less than 1/2 the minutes.
He is by far our fasterst player, our best penetrator, and our only PG that can defensively stay with quicker PG’s.
But he’s so sturdy, he can stick with guys taller than him.

Some of you talking about Jordan Crawford…….here’s what I liked about him: he was/is fearless. He does not play scared at all. Thinking about the Boston game, over Thanksgiving (the one where they beat us by 100pts). Jordan Carwford came in an hit shots, even had a dunk. His shot selection needs work, but he can hit the long range shots and is not afraid to take them. We’ve all seen so many of the other Hawks play afraid. Never Jordan.

KevinM….They HAVE to fire Drew for good reasons and bad reasons. The same way they HAD to fire Woodson. Nobody who watched the Orlando playoff could stand seeing that again. No one now watching repeated 40-point losses is enjoying the games. Simply because it is exposing pathological problems of heart, desire, BRAINS and the sick feeling that the Hawks have lost touch with reality itself to the point where they can’t play a game of basketball. The shock that something is horribly wrong with their minds and their spirits. Like the team is in some kind of metaphysical Hell. And my sincere hope that watching this team and running their inept patterns and bewildered facial expressions through my mind doesn’t make me susceptible to catching the disease.
For this reason, LD is gone. Bank on it.
If they were smart, or not so desperate, ASG WOULD GET RID OF DREW TONIGHT and hire someone so strong he could get to the club. Make the last 10 or so games an experimental clinic and let everyone know that losing the first round means losing their job.
Chance this team will be sold by July 70%, chance of moving away 90%.

Our best 3 players game dont compliment each other because now each of there games all begin and end with how many shots did I get.
Teague caught the Blazers and Millers on the second game of a back to back and the last game of a 5 game southeast road trip .
Since then he has only played well in garbage time and has been invisible in every siongle game matched up against starting quality guards .
Now does that mean I never want to see him play ? Of course not I believe Teague should get some minutes however he is a two guard in a point guards body with limited outside shooting.

Coach Larry Drew met with center Zaza Pachulia after Tuesday night’s loss to Chicago. Drew pulled Pachulia with 8:12 left to play and the Hawks down 45 points after what the coach said was an ill-advised shot that Pachulia took, probably because the game was already out of hand.
“The one thing I’ll never allow to happen with this team is for us to do things that are not going to benefit the team,” he said.

I like everyone else is discussed in the Hawks play recently and am pass my boiling point with them. I recently had a brief conversation with a past Hawks player and he was saying the same thing that most people have said, “Get a legitimate Big”, LD play a solid rotation, and stop Josh from shooting so many jumpers!!!!
I would add to that, “Put Teague in the rotation permanently”, define the players roles, take JC out at the end of games and run plays for JJ at the end of games.
The way I see it, although JJ has seemingly lost a step and is playing like garbage lately. He is still our best option and if players will start to cut to the basket he can find them out of the double team. I was a fan of the motion offense early in the season but now I have my doubts about it. Especially when compared to the Hawks efficiency on offense last year. As much as I hate to say it, Iso Joe is much better than this crap!!!!!!!
The Hawks are not utilizing our talent well!!!! There problem is scheme and coaching. Plain and Simple!!! There is something to what Joe said. They look lost at the end of games and don’t quite know who is doing what. Its horrible to see, because they don’t have good leadership.
A good coach can address the problems the Hawks have and with their talent they could be something special, but a coach that is unwilling to play his bench players regularly and discipline his superstars until they by into his way is doomed to fail!!!!!!!!!!!!
LD your days are numbered.

Sleepy – most of that post just doesn’t hold water. What about Teague on Nash, Curry, Jennings etc.? Teague has held his own against most every PG he’s played against the last month.
And the sg/pg deal is so old and been rehashed around here. Just not true.
And the fans made Al an All Star? Better check how he got on the team.

This from NBA.com:
So the same guys play in the same places and with the same guys, that keeping the second unit together thing, and you begin to see why it is so important to Thibodeau in building the habits that teams like, say, the Hawks don’t have.
“It’s starting to get embarrassing,” said Josh Smith, who should know as he’s a primary reason. “We’re too good a team to be getting blown out of our own gym. Everything that could go wrong happened tonight. We didn’t help each other. This team is one of the hottest teams in the league. We didn’t show any resistance.”
I thought they did, especially Smith.
Resistance to playing good, smart basketball.
Smith is an athletic wonder, but he takes the league’s dumbest shots, bad, fadeaway jumpers over smaller opponents when drives would be easy. He came out after halftime in the first three minutes missing three stand still 20 footers. And the coach lets him. You’d never see that with the Bulls, who also have a rookie head coach, though you wouldn’t know it.
There were famous squabbles between Smith and former coach Mike Woodson in Atlanta, and now you can see why they were necessary and why the Hawks were better under Woodson. Drew has no hold on the team and they are way out of control to the point of indifference. It was most evident at the end of the game with the Bulls getting a last rebound with 21.9 seconds left up 36 and dribbling the ball out so as not to further embarrass the Hawks.
So their resident idiot, Hilton Armstrong, comes up behind Watson and steals the ball and shoots a three. Thibodeau was furious. Play to the last buzzer. Sure. They had barely played for 47 minutes. Though Armstrong is known for that kind of stunt as once when he was with the Kings in a career marked by being an underachiever and erratic, he went to shake hands with Earl Clark, then of the Suns, with a few seconds left in a blowout loss and when Clark reached to shake Armstrong stole the ball. He didn’t have time to score then, unfortunately. This time he made a three to get the Hawks deficit down to 33.
“I’m at a loss for words,” said Drew.
As well as a loss of control.
Ah, but that’s the soon to be out in the first round of the playoffs Hawks.

As for the Jordan Crawford debate, here’s an interesting look as to what players in NBA history he can be compared to.
I sorted this according to:
- rookie season ONLY
- position: GUARD
- height: 6-3 or 6-4
- usage: 25% or over
- PER: of 10 of over
- Games: played in 30 or more
Historically, you get 15 players who fit this criteria. When you sort this group according to PER, here are how those players rank:
1) Steve Francis
2) Dwyane Wade
3) Marcus Thorton
4) Otis Birdsong
5) Freeman Williams
6) Voshon Lenard
Russell Westbrook
7) Darrell Walker
9) Ben Gordon
10) Darrell Griffith
11) Ed Gray
12) Andrew Toney
13) Rex Chapman
14) Willie Green
15) Jordan Crawford
When you click on that link, and start sorting the different categories, it looks like Jordan Crawford right now, most compares to guys like Rex Chapman, ex-Georgia Bulldog Willie Green, or Ed Gray. Yes, Ed Gray the former Atlanta Hawk, and the guy I used to see play at the U of Tennessee back in the mid 90s as a freshman and sophomore, before he transferred to Cal.
Ed was out of the league in 2 years. Willie is still hanging around the league after 8 years. And Rex intrigued people enough with his overall skills, to stay in the league for 11 years and was a starter in about 70% of the games he played in.
Now that I think about it, that’s EXACTLY how Jordan plays like. Rex really wasn’t all that efficient, but he did have the overall skillset when it comes to handling and passing the basketball. And he had the ability to create and make his own shot as a streak shooter. Rex definitely wasn’t known for his defense.
I think Jordan may skew more toward Rex than Ed, because he’s playing alongside John Wall, a speed demon at the point. That can do nothing but help Jordan develop into a basketball player. And the fact that Jordan can make plays with the ball in his hands, will help his longevity in the NBA.
Rex’s career numbers:
14.6 ppg
2.7 asst
2.5 rebs
0.9 stls
1.5 tos
43% FG
35% 3FG
80% FT
I think that may be Jordan’s ceiling as a player. I don’t see him developing into a Dwyane Wade or Steve Francis. And he doesn’t shoot the long ball well enough to be a Ben Gordon. And he’s not explosive enough athletically to be a Russell Westbrook.
But I could see him develop into a Rex Chapman.

Some (a lot?) of people want to make PT an issue between JT and Kirk. I don’t see it that way at all. Kirk’s running the team fine as he’s starting to get acclimated and the other guys aren’t trying to play at PG as much. JT is also running the team fine when getting a shot. JT shoots more, so he scores more – then again, he hasn’t spent as much time on the court lately with JJ and Josh, who demand a higher percentage of shot attempts. And while everyone (I include myself here) believes JT can handle PT when it counts (ie, not garbage time) and against the better opponents, the fact remains that he hasn’t been put in those positions so we really can’t know how much it would have changed things.
The issue as I see it is that, between these two, they should be playing all the PG minutes. Jamal should not be the designated ball handler and set-up man. Kirk succeeds by playing hard, which typically means he’ll be more effective in fewer minutes. I’d like to see a 28-30 Kirk and 18-20 JT split of PG minutes, and wouldn’t mind seeing a few more minutes of them on the court together in a smaller but quicker lineup. Obviously that would be the general plan, but easily flexible when one or the other is having a great game or struggling.
JT deserves regular PT, both for his play and for his development. But Kirk is not the problem with the team, and I think he’s taking too much of the blame for JT not playing and for the overall team woes of late.

Good thing Bibby left this sinking ship and is now on a title contender. The Hawks are mediocre at best and need to start rebuilding. The current squad will never make a run in the playoffs.

clancy I see very few people on this blog, if any, blaming Kirk for Teague’s lack of playing time. That’s clearly on Larry Drew. I’m in the camp that believes JT should be the starter. LD is the only person on this planet that thinks playing Jamal at the point is a good idea.

Clancy, I totally agree with you. JC should get more of JJ’s minutes and rarely play pg. JJ plays too many minutes and has not been nearly as productive as in the past. JC hasn’t either. I wish LD would shake things up a bit and roll the dice with Teague playing more behind Hinrich.
The Hawks can play a 9 man rotation: 2nd unit Teague, Damien, ZaZa & Collins. This will give Al time at the 4 and less minutes for the starters so they can be fresh at the end of games.

uh oh, the Hawks are playing on national tv again Saturday night against the Nets (NBA TV). What tattered shreds of self-respect that the Hawks still have left will be ripped to pieces by the NBA TV announcers if they lose.

Holman on the Hawks on 680..on last night’s broadcast, he quoted Lloyd Bridges, “I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue”
Priceless.
His opinion on last night’s game: He said the team forgot how to win a game on the road after being up 11 heading into the 4th. “They lost their swagger”
Holman likes our chances against Orlando better than anyone else in the playoffs based on where we likely will end up.
7 guys played in Philly on the 2nd of a back-2-back. Who do we point to for this? Our whole bench was inactive.
No way Larry gets fired after one season. That would mean management was totally wrong with their decision this past summer. They don’t accept responsibility now and are dishonest at best.

Al is on with Rome this afternoon….he says the team is struggling right now. He likes the confidence of the team but they’re always ablet to bounce back. He called a group meeting and asked them to stick together the rest of the regular season and get ready for the playoffs.
Not really a lot to tell here, but he is being real careful with his words. I will say he said playing the 5 is tough especially at this time of year when you’re tired.
Al doesn’t sound sold on the problems on this team being behind him.

I think we would have a better shot playing the Heat than the Magic. If we go 5-5 the rest of the season, the 76ers would have to go 8-3 just to tie us. I dont think they will do it.

Sam, the Hawks aren’t going anywhere, regardless of the ownership situation. Georgia is a well-known incubator of NBA-level talent, AND NBA TV and TNT are based here. It would look bad for the league if an NBA team could not survive here. The Hawks problems all begin with the inept ownership group and roll downhill from there. If it gets bad enough, the NBA will purchase the franchise like it did New Orleans. The difference would be that while the NBA prefers to keep the Hornets in LA, the NBA board of governors would NEVER approve of the Hawks moving to another city. They’ll buy the team and find competent ownership for it if it comes down to that.
ld this ain’t no bandwagon… I was at Randy Whittman poster night when I was in cub scouts.

“Atlanta fans grip and moan and wish for players like Dwight Howard and othe future free agents that they will never get but don’t raise heck about good players they had and the sorry organization lets go. Atlanta fans must demand better judgement from their teams ownership and management and giving away a talented kid like Jordan Crawford is a good example.”
You think not showing up to games and chanting MVP for opposing players isn’t a strong enough statement against Hawks management”
Evidently it’s not, they are making no effort to better the team. They are hiring cheap coaches that are not good and a cheap GM that is even worse. The people that are chanting MVP for the opposing players are that team and player fans not Hawks fan. The Hawks fans are just complianing, gripping, moaning and wishing.

@Section 303
“After ripping him most of the year and getting on fellow posters call for him to play more, I have now switched sides. I am firmly in the camp that says Teague should play more. He has played well enough, I think. And, he has proven to have a better shot than I thought.
Never Jordan.”
My point exactly, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford are what they are. They have been in the league long enough they will not get better, plain in simple. Al Horford is getting better, no doubt he is the best player on the hawks team. But Jordan Crawford and Teague can develop. Teague reminds me of Marvin he is just too timid right now, hopefully he can shake it. Jordan Crawford plays with heart and fearlessness, you can’t coach that. He has skills. You can coach him up on other aspects of the game. Like patience and letting the game come to you and not force it. But he has the skills and a killer instinct that will make him a very good player. Jordan Crawford is the sam guy that had that highlight dunk over Lebron James during a summer camp, when Jordan was till at Xavier. He was fearlessthen and he plays fearless now. I also noticed how hard he played the few times he did get in the games for the Hawks. Josh Smith plays that way at times and use to play that way more consistenly his first couple of years in the league. Al plays that way most of the time.
My point is you all complain about the team having no heart, I agree. but even worse the management traded away a player that played with the most heart when he got the opportunity.

JonnyQ: I disagree with you. This current group of Hawks can WIN THE NBA TITLE THIS YEAR. All they have to do to win the title is do two things: #1:Fire Larry Drew and #2:Hire former Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. Making those two moves will GUARANTEE THE HAWKS THE GOLD TROPHY THIS SEASON.

The Hawks have 10 games remaining. The season CAN STILL BE A BANNER YEAR IF THE HAWKS HAVE A QUICK TEAM MEETING AND RESOLVE TO WIN THE REMAINDING GAMES ON THEIR SCHEDULE. A 50-win season in any year is a heck of an accomplishment. Teams that win 50 games are capable of winning the NBA championship. The Hawks are so depressed right now (demonstrated by their sloppy play of late) that the Hawks could not even challenge the Cleveland Caviliers to a game of marbles. This is how bad the Hawks are playing. The Hawks right now cannot beat the Cavs and would probably lose to the Cavs by 20 to 30 points. What the Hawks need to do is get serious about the season and just decide they will play out the string of 10 games, playing as hard as they can. I AM STILL CONVINCED THAT IF THE HAWKS PLAY AS HARD AS THEY CAN, THEY WILL WIN THE NBA CROWN THIS SEASON, HANDS DOWN WITHOUT ANY RESISTANCE AT ALL. Thats how good they are and can be. The Hawks must believe they are a great team and it will start manifesting itself on the court.
