Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 114, Hawks 81
12:13 am March 23, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
- Perhaps it’s best to just skip those video “highlights” above.
- The Hawks got down and stayed down. At Philips. Again. The Bulls balled and the Hawks bailed.
- The Hawks checked out against Orlando last spring (can’t say they did the same vs. Bucks after that W in Game 6). This time it looks like they are doing it before the playoffs even start.
- L.D. keeps preaching the same things and nothing changes. Is he still confident he can get through to this group?
- “I am going to keep trying.” he said. “Right now I think the most important thing with our team has nothing to do with Xs and Os. It’s got to do with just our whole mental state. Coming out and playing hard and sustaining that and being able to play hard for four quarters. I am going to continue to try to preach that message. Hopefully it will get through as we wind down this regular season.”
- That’s not exactly a stirring speech to rally the Hawks but, hey, at least it’s honest.
- And, anyway, all the talk from the Hawks is getting old. At the expense of ticking off my blog people, who no doubt are sick and tired of hearing from the Hawks after games like this, I will share what they had to say. J.J. sounded as if he’s pretty tired of hearing it, too.
- “We are a team that sits here in this locker room and talk about all the time ‘What we’ve got to do, what we need to do,’” he said. “And then we go out on the floor and do things that are out of our character. It makes us all look bad. Until we get that part of the game down we are going to continue to look bad. We have had countless meetings throughout the season that have meant nothing. I don’t even know what to say about it.”
- Of course there is the possibility that what’s happening is completely in line with this group’s character. Could it be that the Hawks need a new mix of players and/or new voices?
- “Maybe,” J.J. said. “Shaking it up a little always rejuvenates. I don’t know what we need. More so than anything come out and have each others’ backs. We haven’t been doing that, especially against upper-echelon teams. Teams that are not in the playoffs we will come out and play together and beat them. But the great teams, the top teams in the league, we come out and it seems like we don’t fight back.”
- The Hawks now own the three worst home Ls in the league this season. “The [stuff] is starting to get embarrassing,” Smoove said. “We are too good of a team to be getting blown out in our own gym.”
- “When you are at home you would think the sense of urgency would be there a little bit more and be jacked up and play with more energy,” Drew said. “We do the opposite for some reason. I am at a loss for words for that.”
- Bulls fans invaded Philips but, as Drew said: “We should be used to it by now. It should be something we can totally just block it out and go play.”
- Believe it or not the score was tied at 17-17 late in the first quarter. Then D-Rose and the Bulls put it on the Hawks and never let up.
- “What happened the last time we were here was definitely on our minds,” Rose said. “We knew once we got that lead we couldn’t let that happen again.”
- That was no sweat since the Hawks showed no indication that they wanted to make the Bulls work for it this time. “This team was up on us by 20 points at halftime last time we played here,” Smoove said. “We fought back, showed some resilliance. I seen the passion in our eyes and the will to win the game. Tonight it was just nonexistent.”
- “It’s frustrating and it’s embarrassing as a competitor,” Marvin said. “I think everybody in here, including the coaching staff, is embarrassed with our effort today.”
- “It went downhill very fast,” L.D. said. “It’s kind of a familiar sight to see–when a team makes a little run on us, our body language just changes. We have to learn how to respond in those situations. That’s just the bottom line. There is no magic pill. There is nothing to do but just roll your sleeves up and tough it a little bit more.”
- Probably no one was going to slow D-Rose the way he was playing tonight. Teague didn’t even get a chance so I guess that means he’s officially dropped out of the rotation again.
- Like he did at Chicago, D-Rose danced to the rim and did what he wanted without penalty.
- “We didn’t run any coverages,” Josh said. “We didn’t help each other and when you don’t help each other it gets contagious. We was giving up too much stuff–junmp shots, dribble drives to the paint, wide open layups, and no one was giving hard fouls. We didn’t show any resistance.”
- The Bulls are starting to look like the class of the East. They won despite injuries. They keep winning even as their schedule toughens. This is the time of the year when the real teams announce themselves and the Bulls are doing it.
- “Give them credit,” J.J. said. “They have been the hottest team in the league and they have been showing it all year. They came in here and kicked our ass pretty much the whole game. It is what it is.”
- It’s also the time of year when teams who once looked good are exposed as lacking what it takes. That’s the Hawks.
- “It’s going to take action. Results,” Joe said. “We are getting nothing out of sitting in here and talking about it or talking to one another. We have got to go out there on the court and do it. It’s matter of going out there and putting forth the effort.”
- L.D. took Zaza out of the game in the second half and the two had words. I couldn’t make out exactly what Zaza said but it looked like he wasn’t happy about whatever Drew said to him.
- L.D. said he told Zaza he didn’t like the jump shot he attempted on the previous possession: “You don’t go on your own, you don’t start trying to do things you aren’t capable of doing. You don’t deviate from what the team is expecting. You continue to play the right way. That was either a shot where he saw he was about to come out of the game or just a bad shot.”
- Said Zaza: “Obviously a game like that nobody feels good about it. We are not happy. These kind of things happen. We move on.”
- Al left the game in the second half with a hamstring strain. “He was OK,” Drew said. “I think the hamstring is still bothering him a little bit. We sat him in the fourth quarter and hopefully he will be ready to go tomorrow.”

From the previous blog:
I’m afraid there is no one simple answer that will instantly transform this team into the real contenders we all want them to become.
The core that once was fearsome in a weakened East is now mediocre at best. Benching Marvin and/or playing Teague isn’t going to close the talent/intangible gap that separates the Hawks from the rest of the better teams in the league.
I don’t know if it’s rebuilding time again, but I don’t have much confidence in Rick Sund being the guy to provide a revised vision and, sadly, the team has clearly digressed under Coach Drew.
Whatever the correct set of answers may be, it had better include attracting some superstar talent. It appears the so-called “Detroit model” of a championship team only worked for Detroit, so I think we can put that idea to rest.
The team has a winning record, and that is good, but this team is wrong and we all know it.

Co-sign MsDee. This entire team has problems with shot selection. Al doesn’t take shots that he should take. Smoove takes shots he shouldn’t take. Joe takes five seconds to decide whether or not he should take shots and by doing so turns good shots into bad ones.
Throw the keys to Teague and let him do what he can do. This is no longer a Ferrari to which Teague will be getting the keys. It’s more like a recalled Toyota Corolla with the floor mat stuck behind the gas pedal.

To answer your question from the last blog: JJ doesn’t sound high. He sounds tired. Disgusted. Resigned. He mentions more than once “we’ve had countless meetings over the season.” Go back and listen to his tone when he says they’ve had meetings that didn’t mean anything.
He says it over and over: we know what to do, we talk about what to do, but we go out there and don’t do it. The trust issues coming out big-time from him as well as the resulting personal agendas because they don’t trust each other (”we don’t have each other’s backs”). I’m going to harp on The Five Dysfunctions of a Team until LD reads that book!!!

Just pathetic. And ASG is still trying to save pennies by waiting to fire this guy. Every game he stay is one they don’t have to pay another coach.
At least we looked like a team when Teague started. Didn’t we win two games by a combined 34 pts last week when Teague started?
LD’s a bully. He picks on bench guys, but nary a word to his regualars or Jamal. Bibby or Mo either. Picks on guys he can hurt their playing time. What a joke.

This team will be sold and hopefully that will bring change. We need a new GM and a new coach to go with a new owner who wants to win and will spend to do so. Players have to go and some new ones with talent and a heart can be brought in. Oklahoma City is a perfect example of what can happen when you get the right people in place. We have some good pieces but we have no direction and no leaders.

I’m going to still support the Hawks, BUT their just now realizing their talk is cheap. How many times have”we heard “things like this happen” and we have to move on??? Honestly I’m not expecting them to do much in the playoffs especially since their facing Orlando in the first round (maybe they will prove me wrong). I think the front office needs to finally realize that this “core” is not going anywhere and break it up.

Long time Hawks fan, feel worse now than when we were 13-69. At least then we knew we were garbage, and at least lottery picks were in the future. This is absolutely terrible, and the worst part about it: We are in essence stuck with this team “the core” as ASG and Sund like to call it. The core is hollow. Things need to be shaken up. Larry Drew needs to be fired, he is not worthy of being a head coach. Woody was canned and he won 53 games with in essence the same team. 45-37 for this bunch is what to expect. I keep reading about us vs. Orlando in the playoffs, who is to say Philadelphia won’t catch us? They are only 3 behind us in the loss column. Garbage.

Another thing I don’t understand is LD’s rotation especially when it comes to Jeff Teague. He gives Jeff praise all day and all night, but still doesn’t use him until we are being blown out (most of the time). I know Jeff has been inconsistent, but thinking back to the Portland game and Milwaukee how he played nice D on Andre Miller and B. Jennings. Knowing Jeff has speed I thought it would have made sense for LD to possibly start him and try to slow down D.Rose.

And you think “surely LD won’t do this; or that etc.” and he does, and it’s just so unbelievable. Or surely Smoove won’t jack up a jumper now, and he does. etc.
Just really bad at this point. Unbelievable really. I don’t think anyone could have foretold the immensity of the meltdown, or the rapidity.

It seems to me like ASG is content on being an average playoff team…I’ve said countless times, even before this lil 3-4 year playoff run, that ATL Hawks need a “superstar”…The team needs it b/c Joe obviously can’t handle being top dawg and this team has no leader to put em in their place..I am a long time ATL fan and I can’t stand it when I go into the arena and see more LAL MIA NYK jerseys than ATL jerseys or see more empty seats than ppl, so this city definately needs a superstar to rally around…Too bad JJ contract holds alot, but other that Horford and Teague, they need to open to trading em all and make it a priority to get a decent center for Horfords sake…Peace…

Co-sign that last sentence of your post. I’ve felt this way all season to be honest with you. Felt that way about Teague and JC2. After last season’s whopping we took in the playoffs, I was hoping Drew would’ve handled young talent better than Woody did, but that hasn’t been the case. At some point this season, I pretty much lost all hope for this squad, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. The only thing that kept me intrigued was the hope of seeing the rooks. We’ve come to know what to expect out of this team, mediocority. Seeing young guys get playing time at least adds an element of surprise/uncertainty to the games.

So tired of the talk, only to get blow out, over, and over, and over ,and over…
Not even fun to watch anymore when you know the outcome. We either blow out or barely win vs scrub teams, and barely win or are blown out vs good teams. There is no inbetween, those are the only results.
This off-season is going to be do or die for the ASG and Rick Sund. If they can’t vastly improve this team, and make it fun to watch again, then the Hawks are going to see Thrasher-like attendance.

At this point, mediocrity is an understatement. This team has no direction, no leadership, no pride, and little hope for the future. The only thing I am happy about now is that Jordan Crawford does not have to put up with this ish anymore. He will be an all-star in 2 years if that long.
Feel bad for Teague and ZaZa. Both deserve more playing time than all of our starters.

We can all agree that Mr. Woodson had ran his course and continue that bebate into eternity. But, he took this team to a point that we will never see again.
In Mr. Woodson’s defense? He took a 13 win team, developed what talent he had. Without a PG and Center he was cooking with old fish grease and served one tasty meal. He milked this roster into two round 2 beat downs and we will never even see that again in our lifetimes.
He had Josh and Al glued to the paint, lead the league in fewest TO’s,
we went from to 3rd best offense ranking to 25th, top tier rebounding team to 29th and josh taking 7 three point attempts to 150?. This team was disciplined and as flawed as this roster is we were 13th in defense.

When Sund and ASKG laid all the blame at his feet? They collectively put the light on the real problem, when they stuck their back sides out the window of the glass tower penthouse floor. L.D. said he told Zaza he didn’t like the jump shot he attempted on the previous possession: “You don’t go on your own, you don’t start trying to do things you aren’t capable of doing. You don’t deviate from what the team is expecting. You continue to play the right way. That was either a shot where he saw he was about to come out of the game or just a bad shot.”
Has he ever said/done this with Josh?

And to berate ZaZa for taking an 18 foot jumper?
That was bush league and borderline asinine. ZaZa was the only big on the floor that plays with more heart than the bench warming starter lined bench.
Rather than do that? Drew should have focused on a better game plan and put his foot so far in the starters azz, that the naval’s should have been dialing 911.

******************
Because Horford and Smith aren’t willing to mix it up on the inside every night. They pick and choose their spots to rebound. On offense, they’d rather play 15 – 20 feet from the basket, virtually taking themselves away from grabbing offensive rebounds. On defense, they sometimes don’t box people out, allowing the opponent to swoop in and get offensive rebounds. Smith is notorious for this.
Then you have others like JJ and Marvin who don’t help matters either, despite both being fairly large players for their position. And our reserve big men, other than Zaza, are pitiful on the boards.
Rebounding is about effort and desire. And there’s no one on the team that aspires to be a great rebounder. Horford and Smith could be, but that’s not what they’d rather do. They both would rather be great jumpshooters than great rebounders.

“I am going to keep trying.” he said.
As I stated in a previous blog, “Do or Do not, never TRY” Trying is for losers. So, LD Tag, you’re it! I disagree with LD assessment of the game, X’s and O’s are also part of the problem. The #1 problem is DEFENSE. They can’t STOP their opponents even if their life depended on it. When your opponent shoots 76% in the 1st half while the Hawks shoots 50%, and still down by 20 points, the problem is clearly defense. At the beginning of the season, LD trashed Woody’s switching defense. He made it clear, that the Hawks was going to “man-up” and guard their man one-on-one. But since these pretenders don’t know how to fight through screens, they will always be subjected to blow-outs. This time, however, they can’t blame Bibby because he’s not here. Actually in the 2nd half, the Hawks went to a switching defense with some success, but by then, the bulls was in a groove and the game was out of reach; Again, a day late with the adjustments and a dollar short.
These players need a coach to show them the errors of their ways. LD can’t just tell his players to just play harder and work things out for themselves. They need directions to play SMARTER. He has lost his team because he’s lost his “coaching voice” and not showing them anything relevant, just to play harder I say that because they seem ignorant of what they are doing wrong. LD has re-defined the word insanity and the players have grown tired of it as evident from JJ (out of character) outburst:
“We are a team that sits here in this locker room and talk about all the time ‘What we’ve got to do, what we need to do,’” he said. “And then we go out on the floor and do things that are out of our character. It makes us all look bad. Until we get that part of the game down we are going to continue to look bad. We have had countless meetings throughout the season that have meant nothing. I don’t even know what to say about it.”
If LD had some real balls, he’ll fire his assistant defensive coach Kenny Gattison tomorrow just to shake things up. It would likely have “zero effect” since he as had “zero effect”. What exactly has he brought to the table anyway? These blow-outs are a direct result of poor defense and he hired him for that reason. In that regard, we have gone from the penthouse to the “out-house” in one season. Just like his players, his coaching staff should also be held accountable. Perhaps it a moot point anyway, if the owners are selling the team, LD is a “dead man walking”.

***************************
For JJ to be top dog, he’s going to have to take over the offense like he used to. And that means to keep the ball in his hands. In Drew’s system, that’s not called for him to do that.
But I do agree that either he can’t handle being “top dog”, and the scrutiny that goes along with it . . or he doesn’t have the mental toughness to be “top dog”. JJ is way to passive at times, and doesn’t look to take a game over ( other than the game the other night in which he went crazy from 3 point range ). Superstars don’t defer to teammates. Teammates defer to superstars.
People want Horford to be the leader of this team, but he’s no true leader either. He just speaks well. And he doesn’t have the talent to exert his will ( whether it be offensively or defensively ) on the opponent. If he wanted to be “top dog”, he’d demand the ball more, even to the point of pissing off his teammates. But he doesn’t. And when he doesn’t get the ball, he doesn’t fight for offensive boards either.
Ironically though, Smith has the “top dog” mentality. I think he definitely wants it. It just that he doesn’t have the skillset to be “top dog”. His skillset is that of a great utility player, like a young Shawn Marion. But Marion could never be counted on to get the job done in a “superstar” like manner. And the same thing goes for Smith.
So without a superstar present, those 3 are going to have to bond together, and try to put the team on their backs. In the end, it’s going to be up to those 3 to get the job done.

For all of you who think Marvin an Kirk are such great defensive players, Chicago’s starting point guard and starting small forward combined for 57 points while shooting well over 50% from the field, while Marvin and Kirk combined for a total of 9pts. So not only did they not defend anybody, they provided no offense either. But Kirk is an EXCELLENT player (LOL).

Yeah Rod. That Kirk is “excellent” or “very good” talk should quiet down a bit. That’s the problem with a lot of us fans. Whatever player we like, we tend to overrate him. There’s no way when you stack Hinrich against the other starting PGs in the league, that he rates out to be a “very good” PG.
The dude is barely a true floor leader. He’s more of a combo guard, than a true PG.

He milked this roster into two round 2 beat downs and we will never even see that again in our lifetimes”.
But who is to say that Woody would have been any better with this new found EAST COAST while keeping this same team?? LD IS Woody for all I know cause guess what, that ISO Joe strategy that Woody would ONLY use was FINALLY exposed during last season BLOWOUT in the playoffs. Had Woody still been a head coach this season WITH the East being what it is and WITH our same players, we would NOT have been in 5th place today. These fans are STONE BLIND! Do any1 in the ATL understand what’s happening? I will tell you once again.
#1 ASG don’t care about a black fanbase(white folks wouldn’t tolerate players like JJ/JS and would demand for them to be eradicated from the team and ASG will make it happen)
#2 JJ could careless how black folks feel about him. He gets a kick out of making the fanbase feel bad after losing games at home.(didn’t anyone see him shoot the ball after LD called a timeout when they were getting mugged by the Bulls?) Playing at home gives this clown pleasure to manipulate the fans). Too his credit he at least tried to tell you people that he doesn’t like you when he said he could careless if you came to the games or not. Don’t you people know a devil when you see one?
#3 JS is no difference. He is a spoil brat who wasn’t raise properly. He too could careless how the fans feel about him because keep shooting jumpers, dribbling ball upcourt and throwing the ball cross court when his pg is closest to him.
#4 This is ORGANIZE RACKETTEERING at best( you people are paying ASG enough money to keep the 8 members in the ATL even when they refuse to satisfy the fans.
#5 When you got players(JJ/JS) who done respect the game, it doesn’t matter what player you sign they will never be effected as a teammate.
For those who keep calling for JT to get minutes, FORGET ABOUT IT! As long as those 2 CULPRITS(JJ/JS) are on the team a pg has no chance.

Why is Drew taking Teague out of the rotation again? What the f~ck kind of sh!t is this.
This team is just unbelievable. I wish I was looking forward to the Braves as the rest of you. I love the Braves but I dont follow baseball in-depth. I’ll watch a game every now and then. But in all honesty I can’t tell a curve ball from a slider. Or a fast ball from a knuckle ball……or whatever it’s called.

Larry Drew needs to sit his a$$ back in the assistant coachs chair. Or better yet move on down to where ever the towel boy sits. Even Woodson was’nt this bad. Drew is soft. The players are only tough as their coach is. Drew called out Zaza. Wow! Zaza!?

I’d just like to correct myself for predicting that New York, with its much softer schedule, would overtake the Hawks in the standings. Despite the Hawks going 3-7 over their last 10, the Knicks have been overtaken by the 76ers. What an inspired hire to bring back Doug Collins, one of the most underrated coaches of all time. Look what he has done for Elton Brand’s career. Wouldn’t it be great if the 76ers overtook the Hawks? What a great story that would be. Hello Heat in round 1!

“LD’s a bully. He picks on bench guys, but nary a word to his regualars or Jamal. Bibby or Mo either. Picks on guys he can hurt their playing time. What a joke.” – SteveW
“He gives Jeff praise all day and all night, but still doesn’t use him until we are being blown out (most of the time).” – K.W.
Larry Drew is a disingenuous person. That means he doesn’t tell the truth. He’s a liar. And at this point, I could really believe whoever it was that speculated that LD thinks his son is going to one day come to the Hawks and take over at PG. It’s like he’s desperately trying to keep JT off the floor cause he’s saving LD II a spot. And I think he’s jealous of the fact that Teague AND his brother have more talent than LD’s entire brood. Jealous of Kendall Marshall and his obese parents now Sharon Drew?
“Pape Sy comes in and plays like Lebron James in the playoffs. Or is that the Hawks-meth talking?” – Matt
Definitely the meth talking. Pape Sy can’t bring the ball up against D-League defense. He will never be a rotation NBA player. When his paychecks run out with the Hawks, he will head back to Europe in hopes of getting another paycheck and some minutes off the bench.
“Teague and Horford should be the captians. Everybody else is tradeable at this point.” – Booo!
For those of you lamenting Drew’s handling of Teague, let me provide you with the following ray of sunshine. Teague will outlast Larry Drew, Jamal Crawford and Kirk Hinrich with this Atlanta Hawks organization. He can become a restricted free agent after 2013/2014 and is signed to a very reasonable rookie scale contract paying $1.5m then $2.5m then $3.5m over the next three seasons. Teague IS THE FUTURE at the point guard position for the Hawks because JJ’s contract precludes them from getting anybody else. I don’t want to entertain any fantasies about getting Raymond Felton, even though he refuses to be a backup to Ty Lawson in Denver.
So after this season, Crawford is gone. He has faded badly this year and there’s no way the Hawks would go into the luxury tax to retain his diminishing services. That gives the Hawks a 3-guard rotation next year of Teague, JJ and Hinrich, assuming there is a next season. After next season, Hinrich comes off the books. Again, no way the Hawks keep him beyond his contract year unless he signs for a fraction of his current salary ($9m).
What we saw immediately after the Bibby trade was that Teague has finally arrived. He doesn’t have a jumper but neither does Rajon Rondo. He will never be the passer that Rondo is, but he can create the same problems with his quickness, defense and ability to get in the lane and score and draw fouls. LD can bury him on the bench until he’s fired or his contract runs out after next season, but Teague will still be here and TEAGUE CAN PLAY. The future is bright for the Hawks at the PG position… we finally found our guy.
Another happy side affect of Crawford’s absense from the rotation starting next year is that Marvin will finally have a chance to get consistent shots and establish himself as a legitimate starter in the NBA. He will never live up to the expectations he came into the league with. But with the right coaching and opportunities within the offense, he can become a player who is worth his salary. This can never happen as long as Crawford is there to hoist jumpers and play zero defense.
“WHY CAN’T THIS TEAM REBOUND? Every time we get burned bad we are outrebounded like crazy.” – HoosierHawk
Northcyde covered this… Rebounding is about desire, and COACHING. Not only do the Hawks take ill-advised long jump shots, you see 5 guys running back on defense while the ball is still in the air. They aren’t even expected to crash the boards, and that is a coaching issue. The right coach could get effort out of these guys. It looked like Elton Brand’s career was over but look what happened when he got a little inspired.
“His great numbers that mask the fact they never could pull a team over the top.” – JSS
When you look at what’s going on with New York right now, JJ is a very comparable player to Melo. They are both isolation players and volume shooters. Volume shooter means they have a high points per game average, but only because they take a lot of shots. This means they are not efficient players. Al Horford is an efficient player. He has one of the highest shooting percentages in the NBA, and it would make more sense from the standpoint of a team trying to win to feature him more in the offense.
This is why we keep talking about the Hawks’ failure to hire a statistician. If they had consulted someone versed in advanced stats before signing JJ to a max contract, they would have known that his numbers are inflated by the sheer volume of shots he was allowed to take by Woody and now LD. The Hawks organization would have been much better off trading him to New Jersey last offseason for 1 or 2 future lottery picks, where they could have had a chance to land a superstar on a rookie scale contract and maintain financial flexibility to bring in players who COULD put the Hawks over the top. Something JJ cannot, as JSS so accurately observed.

Larry Drew has driven this team off the road and over a cliff. Even with the playoffs coming in three weeks the Hawks should consider firing him immediately. The anger of the fan base is only going to grow when we experience this HOT MESS in the playoffs.

“That’s not exactly a stirring speech to rally the Hawks but, hey, at least it’s honest.”
SAY WHAT???
Honest would be if he told the truth and acknowledged that he does not know what he is doing.
The problem IS Xs and Os. The problem is LD. The talent level that we have is more than enough to be competitive.
I hate to bring this up again BUT:
We were down 2 when Jamal came in and down 17 when he ended his shift while he brought ZERO on offense.
This has been a staple of most of our losses against playoff teams: we start out reasonably well, focused, fighting (with some obvious problems) and when Jamal comes in it all falls like a house of cards (LAL, MIA games).
A variation on this is when Jamal does provide offense and then LD keeps him too long and the offense he brought is wiped out by is lacking D (see the DEN game at home as an example).
Another example of LD’s horrible disingenuous self?
“L.D. said he told Zaza he didn’t like the jump shot he attempted on the previous possession: “You don’t go on your own, you don’t start trying to do things you aren’t capable of doing. You don’t deviate from what the team is expecting. You continue to play the right way. That was either a shot where he saw he was about to come out of the game or just a bad shot.”
So Zaza’s jumpshot from the FT line – an open shot, within his range – was a bad shot???
And what about the dozens of bad shots that Smoove puts up per game? Where is the accountability?
Against MIA Josh shot 5 or 6 long jump shots in 6 minutes of play missing all of them and only the LD made something about it but later in the game when Josh again jacked up a couple of early possession jays LD did nothing.
What about the 2 quick jump shots Josh launched yesterday to open the 3rd quarter? Weren’t those bad shots?
I grant that the game was lost by then but to start the second half exhibiting the same mistakes we do over and over and not doing anything as an HC to correct them by pulling the player that makes the mistake leads to what???
Where is the criteria when in the pre-season LD said that he wanted Josh in the paint and then half way the season, when things were starting to go south and his shot selection and % was clearly going down the drain, he said that he can live with Josh’s long jump shots, his turnovers on the break and his backboard wrecking half court passes???
Where is the criteria when he says that Teague bring us so many different things and then is benched with DNP-CD in order to “get Jamal out of a slump”???
You “reward” a young and promising player who is starting to show he can contribute with DNP-CD to then “compensate” a streaky, undisciplined, no defense player like Jamal with extensive minutes at the PG where he is HORRIBLE for him to break out of a “slump”???
An alleged slump which no more no less than Jamal being Jamal since his season FG% levels for this year are identical to his careers?
All supposedly because Teague can’t score and will be exploited by opposing teams???
Didn’t he shoot the rock well yesterday? Doesn’t his performance yesterday show that when he gets his confidence established his shot will start to fall consistently?
Teague shot .441 from the shorter 3 point land in his second season in College.
Is it that difficult to believe that if given minutes to develop he would equal Jamal’s .339 whilst bringing D ?? (or equal Josh’s .326, who has a green light to shoot whilst missing in action in the paint?)

w-o-w! i didn’t realize how important bibby was to this team! say what you want to about bibby–he was the glue that made the team stay together. grant it he is getting old, can’t defend, can’t penetrate, can’t jump and really don’t pass all that well–but i’ll tell you this about him–he could atleast somehow manage to keep the hawks somewhat a float the past few years.
last night was a train wreck in slow motion!!! our offense is a disaster. the hawks shoot shots with absolutely no one underneath the basket. the opponent shoots shots with two players charging for the boards. we shoot ft’s and our lane guys don’t even look to see if they go in before they had back to the defensive end. they shoot ft’s and if they miss–the opponent challenges for the rebound.
we’re broke in every area–if this was a normal franchise i would expect to see hawks fire larry drew on the bottom line of espn today–but hey were the hawks–let’s see if he can turn them around by playoff time…or maybe bring bibby back as a player assistant.

I actually agree with what Joe Johnson is saying. The Hawks just need to shutup and play. Their stupid meetings and repeated quotes to the media have not provided anything.
Have to ask….is there anyone out there, besides Najeh, that thinks Josh Smith is worth keeping around? I’ve gotten to the point where I just cannot stand that guy (Josh, not Najeh). He’s lazy. Walking up the court every time up and down the court, the jumpers takes and can’t make, the lip he gives LD, sitting at the end of the bench during TO’s….how is this tolerated? The guy needs to be sent on his way. At this point, I really don’t care who/what they get for him. As long as he is not a Hawk, that’s all that matters to me.
Mark Bradley called Josh one of the most talented players in the league….Mark Bradley needs to get his head examined. This “talent” that clown is alleged to have, does not exist. Stop getting fooled by the random dunk/blocked shot….pay attention to the 99% of the time he coasts up and down the floor and kills this team with attitude and jumpers. Get rid of Josh Smith!

People asking for JT to start at the point reminds me of the NFL when people start asking for the backup quarterback and when he gets in they see why he is the backup.
No one is going to stop Rose or any of the quality NBA players. What you need is quality players to offset what they do. JT was a college player who was good at driving to the basket and looking for his shot.(not a NBA point guard quality) He cannot create for others.
As long as Smoove is aloud to bring the ball down the court and spend the majority of the offense at the 3 point line the hawks will not improve.
For you new hawks fans, we once had Nique Wilkins for our superstar and his play was just like Smooves. They brought in Lenny Wilkens as coach who benched Nique he strayed from what the caoch wanted him to do. That year he played the best ball of his career. Because Lenny got tired of forcing him to be a team player he was traded the next year for what proved to be big mistake for Danny Manning.

The only way to improve this group of players

From mark Bradley;
This is why you don’t promote the nice-guy assistant. Because the players who’ve known him only as the nice-guy assistant will quit on him. And if you think the Hawks are still playing hard for Larry Drew, how are we to explain the misdoings of the past three weeks?
The Hawks have lost six home games in 18 days. (By way of comparison, they lost seven home games all last season.) Only one of these six losses has been by fewer than 13 points. Average margin of the six losses — 17.2 points..
How does a team go 65-17 at home the last 2 seasons, but end up losing 15 games so far at home this season, and not only are they losing, but they have the 3 worst home losses in the NBA this season.
I would fire LD, and trade one of the core players this offseason.

And for the record, I dont think Kirk is excellent. but I think he is a solid PG. However, with the way our team is playing right now, they can make anybody look bad, and they can make any opposing player look good.
To be fair to Marvin, some of the shots Deng made were contested. And if you play good defense, and the guy still makes the shot, there is nothing you can do.

Hawks amongst 5-6 franchises the League should consider purchasing, followed by dispersal of the few ‘real’ players to the remaining 24+ teams. The owners are bush league at best, the GM’s a chump of the 1st order (with a track record that proves it), and many of the players are d-league material. The GM and owners should be sent off never to be heard from or seen in professional basketball circles again. The entertainment value of this franchise has long-since slipped into negative territory, which is to say that ‘fans’ should be paid to view games in which the Hawks ‘appear’ – and the verb ‘appear’ should not be confused with the verb ‘play’.

What I saw last night was inexcusable. Fans can forgive lack of talent and cheapness, they cant forgive lack of heart and stupidity- which the Hawks have a whole lot of. There is nothing right about this organization from the owners to the players.
The Management:
The owners are constantly dysfunctional and the only time they opened up their wallets was to give Joe Johnson the worst contract in the freaking NBA. He is half the player Wade, Lebron, or Bosh is, yet gets paid more, and this is coming from a guy that HATES the Heat. Stop trading away our rookies and give them a chance! Jordan Crawford is proving that he is a legit scorer and even Acie Law is stepping it up as of late. The problem is not the rookies, it’s the coaches who won’t teach them how to play or give them a chance.
The Coaching:
Larry Drew is Woodson 2.0, still can’t run an offense, still can’t make adjustments, still won’t trust rookies, still can’t make his players play right (Josh Smith, stop shooting jumpers and BOX OUT). The motion offense looked nice at the start of the season, but everyone went back to old habits and now every possession is one guy playing one-on-one while everyone else watches. Also, I am pretty sure every single coach in the league tells his team “Alright guys, we’re playing the Hawks tomorrow, remember to leave Josh Smith wide open for long jumpers and threes”
The Players:
Josh Smith- Stop shooting jumpers, play in the paint, play defense, rebound. As brilliant as he sometimes is, this guy is killing our team with his attitude.
Marvin Williams- OK, he just has no talent, he’s not Chris Paul or Deron Williams and he never will be. I can’t really hate on him because he tries.
Al Horford- He is really the only solid player we have. He’s plays with unquestionable heart and effort out of position. He seems to be taking a leadership role but is still a little too nice. As much as we Hawks fans hate him, can you see KG letting his team bend over and take it like the Hawks did last night? Please trade Josh Smith and Joe Johnson before they can turn Horford into an apathetic heartless player.
Jeff Teague- Is he good or not? We can’t tell because the coach won’t give him minutes even after he proved himself worthy.
Joe Johnson- Worst contract in the NBA. We had two guys that could do his job, Jamal Crawford and Jordan Crawford, yet we decided to max him out instead of picking up a true center.
Jamal Crawford- It seems like he’s lost the will to live.
Zaza- He suffers from a combination of Teague and William’s problems. It appears he’s just not that good and the coach won’t give him a serious try either. Buckhead Bottle Bar has pretty bad service by the way, I hope you have replaced the 40-year-old floor manager with the frosted tips, but don’t pull an ASG, hire someone that actually acts differently than his predecessor.
Hinrich- You just landed in the same situation you were in before: dysfunctional team with a losing mentality, “star” player with the worst contract in the league, yep, we’re basically the Wizards with more talent, at least they let their rookies play (our rookies too), and at least their fans come out to games.

Truth be told, JJ is not playing at a All Star level. However, he is not the reason the Hawks are getting blown out. There is plenty of blame to go around and even “The Boss Big AL” needs to be called out. JJ atleast tried to will his team last night and if he had played a full game he would have likely had 20 plus points and a overall good assist and rebound number.
When JJ complains after a game, everybody says “JJ sucks” and we pay him all this money. What else do you expect the “captain” to say? Should he say we are meeting and trying to get better as a team? Should he say we are going to get better even though they get beat over and over the same way? I actually like it that someone is finally speaking out.
So yes, it is okay to blame JJ for not playing up to Allstar level, but let’s don’t forget that he is facing double teams just about every night and Josh, JC1, Marvin, Kirk and yes, The Big Boss Man, is not doing much either.
Everyone also wants to talk about JJ’s contract, but let’s remember he is not making $20 million this year. Therefore, it is the collective contracts of Marvin, Jamal ($10 million), Kirk, Josh, Twin, Etan, Zaza, etc. that is really hindering this team. Just to prove my point, You could easily take Marvin and Jamal’s contracts and have D. Williams or Chris Paul for $15-17 million per season. That is real talk.

RK _ I think your analogy of people wanting the backup QB in more in line with people asking for Hilton Armstrong. I agree with another person and Teague is our PG now and in the future. The sooner we play him, the better he will be the future. Sometimes we have to let our starter go (Favre) for our backup QB to play (Rodgers)- and he even struggled his first year.
The more you play NBA games, it will slow down for you. You gain experience from playing against Rose, so the next time you play him you make adjustments (like Rose did against Hinrich). Practicing against Bibby daily does not make you better.
Teague played Rose for 7 minutes and Rose was 1-4 with an assist, a rebound and a turnover. Do the math what he did against the rest of the team. I have said it over and over, what JT lacks in offense he will get it back on defense (see Lawton, Jennings, Curry, Miller etc.)
Josh is a lot like Nique. Josh has worked on his game and he has grown leaps but he needs a good coach. He needs to define his game. The first half he had some good post up moves, then went away from it the second half. LD should allow Josh to shoot jumpers, but make him understand inside – out. Out of all the players, I think Josh is the only one who really wants to be a superstar and that is why he takes a lot of shots.
To shake this team up, LD should be fired ASAP. That will get the fans back in the Phillips. Put the interim tag on Van Exel or any of the coaches. Let that coach prove he deserves the job next year.

“KIRK HINRICH: WTF WAS WITH YOUR DEFENSE LAST NIGHT? YOU ALMOST MADE BIBBY LOOK INDISPENSABLE”
Remeber this is the guy who supposedly has the highest basketball IQ on the team, is a captain on the floor, and was supposed to be the best defender of point guards in the league. He played a total of 28 minutes with 5 assist, 2 turnovers, and got his lunch handed to him by a guy he supposedly mentored. But some posters on here (Vava74) think he is an excellent point guard. He is only a little better than Bibby at this point, and should be a backup point guard, as the two teams who had him before us recognized. The guy used to have a little quickenss, but that is gone now either because of injury or age.

Joe and Marvin both outrebounded Josh and Horford last night. I know, I know, Al was hurt and nothing bad can be said about Al. It was all Josh’s fault.
Teague and Wilkins should be starting for Marvin and Hinrich. With Wilkins you should explain to him that he should provide defensive intensity, and slash to the basket on offense. No jumpshots. We have got enough jumpshooters in the starting lineup. Hinrich does not have the lateral quickness to stay with the faster point guards in the league anymore, unless he is still hurt.

My deal with Teague:
Last season, it was obvious Bibby was done. I knew, as did many of you, that our only chance in the playoffs was to play Jeff at least rotational minutes, get him acclimated to the NBA, and come playoff time, he could help us with the clearly faster PG’s we would be facing.
Woody wouldn’t, we were smoked, first by Brandon Jennings and the Bucks, next by Jameer Nelson. It was sad. The solution is sitting on your bench, and you don’t use him. So Woody was not retained.
November of this year, it is already obvious Bibby has no D left at all. None. So the only solution is to put Teague in 20+ mpg, let him learn, and we got a shot in the playoffs.
Now Teague is better than last year by anybody’s standards. His defense improved dramatically. And he makes the Hawks play faster, which fits perfectly with our athleticism. but we let him sit, evidently out of sheer stupidity.
So when we trade Bibby Teague comes in and improves the team. Now Jamal is still stinkin’ and Josh is still jackin’ etc., but the team is obviously better.
So LD sits Teague.
LD starts Teague last week. We beat a very good Portland team, and Teague shuts down the opposing G, which he does with regularity.
But we knew the pattern. He would be out of the rotation soon.
He starts at the Bucks, and shuts down Jennings and Co.
He plays against Ty and Felton and they get shut down better than normal by far. Neither on in double figures.
And so he’s out of the rotation again.
LD is stupid. Weird.
LD needs to go. No question.

This is the last time I’m going to chime in on Josh Smith. Go back and read and compare the quotes about Josh Smith as he presently constituted and compare them to what was written about Lamar Odom when he was about to be run out of Miami and first few years in Lakers organization.
Josh needs a super defined role. When Derek Fisher was in Utah, Odom did not have a guard to keep him in line. Kobe was trying his darnbest to get out of LA. When Gasol was obtained, Jackson took about a month; but he quickly made him a combo big man who had three jobs: rebound, advance the ball and give it to a guard, shoot only uncontested jumpers… Those were his strengths.
I’ll leave it at that…

Bad Losses at Home this season:
Bucks by 17 on Nov. 10th
Boston by 23 on Nov. 22nd
Hornets by 41 on Jan. 21st
Sixers by 34 on Feb. 8th
Knicks by 13 on March 6th
LA by 14 on the 8th
Denver by 15 on the 16th
Miami by 21 on the 18th
Chicago by 33 on the 22nd (would’ve been 36 except for the last second Hilton 3).
That’s 9 games lost at Home this season in bad style.
The closest game was losing by 13 to the Knicks.
5 times beaten by 20+ this season at home.
3 times by 33+.
Bad Road Losses:
We lost to NJ
We lost by 16 @ SA, and it wasn’t that close
We lost by 23 at Detroit
We lost by 12 to Boston
We lost again to NJ by 7
We lost at Mil. by 8

“He said Pachulia, guard Jamal Crawford and swingman Damien Wilkins are “for sure” among the bench rotation and guard Jeff Teague and Collins also could get minutes.”
Translation – we have a 8 man rotation, and sometimes I may play Teague and Collins. Which means Teague is out of the rotation, Coach’s mouth yesterday. Which we already knew since he was out of the rotations at Detroit and Miami.
So unless ASG or Sund makes LD, Teague not only is not a starter,he is not a 5 mpg game on a nightly basis with this team.
See why I want LD fired.
And I will not rejoice over him as a human being, but I will be glad for the Hawks when it happens. Get Casey or that former Cavs Coach, Got to be better.

But, Zaza? You must be crazy. Zaza doesn’t deserve the time he gets now. He’s terrible. He’s had more than a couple of years and more than a handful of minutes to progress in terms of his game, but he’s the same Zaza we saw since he got here. Some might argue he’s even regressed.

From the game writeup;
L.D. keeps preaching the same things and nothing changes. Is he still confident he can get through to this group?
“I am going to keep trying.” he said. “Right now I think the most important thing with our team has nothing to do with Xs and Os. It’s got to do with just our whole mental state. Coming out and playing hard and sustaining that and being able to play hard for four quarters.
I am going to continue to try to preach that message. Hopefully it will get through as we wind down this regular season.”.

Of course Joe didn’t deserve that raise! That isn’t the issue here..the issue is the management team being in charge and making bad after bad decision.
How many teams in the league would pay Etan Thomas to write blogs for hoopshype and not dress out?
How many coaches would allow Josh to jack up that jumper of his time and time again?
How many teams are going to come in here, embarrass us, take off the 4th quarter and punk us before getting out of town.
There isn’t a team in the that dreads to come into the Highlight factory and compete against us. There is no heart on this team even though there are some here who think all is well. That offense is nothing more than sharing jumpers with Joe instead of Joe jacking the majority of them up.
Jamal has simply kept quiet until its time to change his address. Smart move based on his performance this year.
Someone tell me why we go on the West Coast trip, come back with a decent record, and proceed to take Teague out of the action and allow Kirk to start? It doesn’t make sense. I like both Kirk and Teague, but if something is working, why don’t you stick with it?
LD and Teague……oil and water, obviously. If LD could insert his son, he would….give him a 3rd year and watch who’s on our SL team!
We are stuck with this group for at least another year minus Jamal. Since Sund isn’t known to use a computer, and he doesn’t have a draft pick, I guess he will coast through year 31 with no accountabliity.
Sund, you blew it this past offseason and you know it! You should resign and do something that doesn’t impact this team.
And for the Laimbeer rants, please! No assistant coach from Minnesota is deserving of a crack as a head coach. They have won a grand total of 17 flippin’ games! Please let him continue to mentor the double double king!
Well, off to Philly where there are no home fans waiting to boo us or sell tickets to the opposing team…in fact, it might feel like a home game when they get there.
Philly is getting ready to take over slot 5 and we might get to match up with Boston now…what everyone is hoping for.

Joe again, telling the truth. honestly thats the most candid he’s been. no cliches to express anything.. seemed like he cared.
get 20 shots up Joe.
**********************
I’ve been saying this forever. He needs to get his shots up.
As of right now, he’s about the only one capable of getting us out of this rut. We’ve tried to run the offense Drew’s way . . and it didn’t work. So now we just simply need to put the ball in JJ’s hands, and either let him create for others, or let him take his own shot . . and tell others to rebound his miss.
People talk about JJ hogging the ball this year, but he’s averaging almost 2 full shots less this year, than he did last year. He isn’t even taking 17 shots a game. That needs to change. His mentality needs to change.
Dude needs to simply stop deferring to everyone else, and see if he can get it going early, to make the game easier for them later on. He can’t be afraid to go 7 – 20, to try to help his team win. But the other guys ( namely Horford and Smith ), need to hit the boards if he is off of his game.
In the past when JJ went ISO, people knew the shot was either going up, or that the ball was going to be kicked out to a shooter. This meant that our big men knew to crash the boards. But under the vaunted “Pentagle Offense”, anybody can end up with the ball and an open shot, including our big men. That means that there may not be anybody in the paint to rebound the ball.
The so-called “selfish” Joe Johnson has only attempted 20 shots in a game 16 times this year, and hasn’t attempted 20 shots since the Chicago win earlier this month. We’re 10 – 6 in those games.
But more telling, is that in the games in which he’s taken 20 shots, but shot less than 40% from the field, we’re 5 – 1.
Why?
Because he’s still a factor in the game by racking up assists. And other people are hitting the boards. And usually when he’s racking up assists, some other person is having a big game.
- 9 assists in a 6 – 21 FG performance vs Cleveland . . Horford 12 rebounds ( 6 offensive ) . . Marvin 22 points
- 10 assists in an 8 – 24 FG performance vs MIami . . Smith 12 rebounds ( 3 offensive ) . . Jamal 19 points
- 9 assists in an 8 – 21 FG performance vs the Clippers . . . Horford 12 rebounds ( 7 offensive ) . . Jamal 34 points
- 9 assists in a 5 – 20 FG performance vs Chicago . . . Horford 16 rebounds ( 7 offensive ) . . Horford 31 points
Ever since JJ has been here, the key number to me is not how many points he scores or how many assists he racks up. It’s how many CREATED POINTS he produces. Normally, the magic number for the Hawks to win is somewhere around 30, preferably 35 created points ( his own + points via assists ).
This team CANNOT SURVIVE with our big men constantly taking jumpers and constantly being out of position to rebound a miss. At some point, they need to get their butts in the paint, to do what big men do . . and that’s rebound the basketball.
It’s the reason why I’m all for Zaza starting now, despite his glaring limitations in other areas. When you grab offensive rebounds, you either get a chance to put the ball back into the hole, or you get fouled and go to the line.
People despised the predictability of the ISO offense. But all ISO did, was either enable our best player to get his shot, or create a wide open look for others. The Pentagle has our big people out on the perimeter way too much.
Scrap the “Pentagle”, and go back to ISO.

Slot 5 will probably be retained.

You forgot Joe, who should be the starting point of any trade discussion. No point in blowing up the team if you are still going to keep giving him 1/3 of the cap. Might as well keep everyone else around if Joe is going to remain the centerpiece. Trading the players who are actually getting paid what they are worth (Al, Smoove) is irrelevant if you keep the anchor whose salary will continue to weigh this team down (Joe).

Playing Jeff Teague is not going to save the Hawks. I don’t know why every season people desperately believe in an “Only If He Played” guy on the bench. There are no superstars on the bench. Teague had his chance to take over the team this Summer and into camp but he didn’t do it.
Let us hope that the new CBA changes to the extent where teams will no longer be able to pay the salaries of 3-4 superstars. Perhaps if teams were forced to divest talent because of new hard cap rules, then the Hawks might have a chance to snag one or two and build accordingly.

“People despised the predictability of the ISO offense. But all ISO did, was either enable our best player to get his shot, or create a wide open look for others. The Pentagle has our big people out on the perimeter way too much.
Scrap the “Pentagle”, and go back to ISO.”
Or how about scrapping both and going to what works best for this team, which is running the ball through the post?
Start Teague, post up someone on every play (my preference is Smoove who gets rid of the ball when he’s double teamed quicker than anyone else on the team), and run some pick and rolls with Teague and Al. No pentangle, no iso. I don’t think this would be that hard.
It’s about time the Hawks started realizing there are better options than just choosing between different levels of incompetence.

I still don’t get why LD abandoned the Teague/Kirk back court. So what if they lost one game to Denver. They are 2-1 with that lineup with a win over a quality Blazers team minus Al and a 25 point blowout — the largest margin of victory for the Hawks this season — over the Bucks, who are the 3rd best defensive team in the league.
I don’t give a sh-t what Sund acquired Kirk to be or what he gave up to get him. It is LD’s job to put his best possible lineup on the floor. The Teague/Kirk back court is at least as good as any other combination he has thrown out there and has shown itself to have a higher ceiling, at least recently. It’s not like the standard lineup is doing so great that the Hawks should continue rolling with it.

WELL!!! Let’s see, PG Teague can’t start for the Hawks and Hinrichs does, check the box score, Teague 20 points last night and Hinrichs 0, that is right a big fat zero, no points scored! Now go over to the Wizards, Jordan Crawford can’t play for Hawks so is traded, he is averaging 12 points a game, 1.5 steals a game and plays better defense than our Crawford plus very young and improving every game! Something is very wrong with this picture! Give up the players we had for Hinrich is a joke, we got the wrong PG, Heck, if L.D. wasn’t so much like Mr. Potato Head Woodson, we would have had our starting PG in Teague and still have Jordan Crawford and should have traded the Crawford we have now. What a shame! L.D. has proven yet again that the ASG should have hired a bonafide head coach with experience or at least a coach from another team. Same old crap here, just a different year and stupid trades once again! Way to go GM SUND!

When is someone going to call this what it really is?
The Hawks are a team of talented, but mostly selfish, players….and, unfortunately, there’s not a real leader in the bunch.
Big contracts and gaudy statistics don’t constitute a winning attitude, the knack for making others around them better and the ability to inspire flawless execution. They often go in opposite directions….but when you’re paying as much as the Spirit does for this group of players, they shouldn’t. When we’re asked to shell out as much as we do as fans, it shouldn’t be this way.
But it is.
How do I know?
Did you see the bench last night while they were getting pasted….laughter, smirks, an overall lack of concern. Disgraceful……and more evidence that there’s an overall lack of accountability among the team….even to each other…..on national TV, no less.
Did you hear any comments after the game suggesting this level of ineptness can’t and won’t be tolerated…..by anyone? Nope.
Do you think Kobe would have stood by idly after that stinker? Or Garnett? Or as a coach, Popovich? Jackson? Please….heads would have rolled just on GP. Instead, we get pablum from Joe Johnson and the old soft shoe from LD…..As my Dad used to say, you’re only an elite team imposter if you don’t carry the values every elite team possesses. Which ones do the Hawks have?
Crickets.
The Hawks issues are less about “x’s” and “o’s” than they are about a team that is in real need of a leader on the court who has EVERYONE’s attention and respect. I guarantee this will not take place until two things happen: a) we get a coach who knows strategy and IS a leader himself, and b) we get a GM who can balance personnel knowledge with the importance of leadership (if he’s not already a leader himself).
Plain and simple. The Hawks lack a ‘winning’ CULTURE (nod to Charlie Sheen)
It’s a shame, because, in the process, not only are they selling themselves short, we, the fans, are getting royally screwed. I hope it changes….but I’m not holding my breath anytime soon.

After one freaking game!!!
But yet he will stick with the line up of Marvin starting, and Al playing the center, and the disappearence of Jeff Teague who is lost on the bench..
It kinda make me wonder,if,LD is like Woody and is just that dumb or is it something about Teague when he is around his coach and mates to limit his time because of some kinda emotional or psychotic behavior or something??
Trainer Wally(whatever his name is) walks up to LD: (whispering)”Hey..U know jeff didn’t take his pill today”.
LD:”Where is he?”
Wally:”He’s over by the bleachers talking to the large poster of Dominique”..
LD looks and see’s Teague looking up at the bigger than life poster, and carrying on a conversation with it.
Teague:”Blah,Blah,Blah,Damian Blah Blah,Good Play Blah Blah,Damian Blah”!!
Teague:”What about me 21?? What about what i do and i bring? U always tawken bout Damian and even when he makes mistakes u gotta excuse for yo nephew,Nooka!!”
LD:”Jeff!! Now u know what u got to do Jeff. Now Wally does not have to do this every night, and u know how long it takes for that medication to get in yo system son!”
Teague looking at LD:”Blah”!
LD: “Jeff”!
Teague:”Blah Blah”
LD:”Pull your pants up and tighten your draw string on them and follow Wally”.
Teague follows Wally the trainer to the training room but decides to throw the ball at LD’s head with LD’s back turned to him and misses..
Teague:”Heat Check”!!
LD faces players and ask them to gather in a circle then says:”Now yall know jeff ain’t right, and he got problems. But he is one of us..And we can’t let this get out because if we let him go then every major mental program will come down on us”..So,we’ll see how he fairs and until then,we’ll see about his playing time”…
If this is not the case, then why do we sit him unless we’re being blown out and play him a game or 2 then DNP for 2 games and play him the last 6 mins during a blowout the 3rd game..
It makes no sense..Play the man LD..We are a different team with him in and a whole lot different with him out..

I don’t know, to be completely honest. I just think Mikhail Prokhorov is desperate enough to have a winning team by the time the Nets move to Brooklyn that he might be willing to take on Joe’s contract as long as he doesn’t have to give up Deron Williams or Brook Lopez. Since there will be a new CBA next year what I’m about to say probably doesn’t mean anything, but at least for now, the Nets are scheduled to be under the cap next year, which means that they won’t have to give back equal salary to the Hawks if they trade for Joe. I don’t think the Hawks will get more than one first rounder for Joe in a deal considering his contract, but being able to get out from underneath his deal alone is worth it if the Hawks choose to blow this team up and rebuild.
I just don’t see the point in trading Smoove and Al — who are both paid fair market value — and keeping Joe, whose contract is going to hinder any attempt to rebuild this team anyway.

Najeh, Josh Smith is not worth what he makes. If anything, he should be paying money back to the organization. His lack of effort is almost funny to watch. So who is going to set up in the post Najeh? That’s part of the problem.
Smith loves his midrange jumper. So does Horford. Neither is comfortable setting up down on the blocks. Our best post player is actually Joe Johnson. It’s easy to say that we should play inside-out. I would agree with that, if our big men would play that way.
The concept Drew came up with was good, until teams had a chance to study what we were doing and adjust to it. Now we simply need to get the ball into JJ’s hands, and see if he can take a more assertive role in the offense in which people are playing off him more. If you want to set him up in the post, that’s fine. Just get him the ball and let him make the decisions.
That doesn’t mean that Al and Smith can’t get theirs. But the fact is that neither are good at creating their own shot, and are dependent on others to get the ball to them when they are open. Horford would be the definitive go-to guy, if he could create his offense down in the lost post a little better.
In the short term, get the ball to JJ, and let’s see if how we used to play last year, can get us back on track.

This Hawks Team will go down in Infamy–they are truly an Embarrassment to Professional Sports. As so many of you have previously stated, they really do STINK. Philips Arena has become the TOILET BOWL FACTORY and there should be ONE GIANT FLUSH FOR MANKIND to get rid of Larry Drew, Rick Sund, the Ownership Group and Most of the Players. I hope the Midnight Train Out of Georgia is locked and loaded to take their Sorry Butts to Never Never Land. The Excuses are Pathetic–we Lost Our Focus; we play better when we just come out to have Fun. I can just hear a Brain Surgeon saying–sorry I Lost My Focus during the Operation and next time I’ll just try to have More Fun. Hopefully the Person signing their Payroll Checks loses Focus, because why should anybody be paid for this Garbage. The Hawks have really never accomplished Anything Noteworthy in Atlanta and their best chance to become Elite was when Billy Knight had the opportunity to Draft real Prime Time Players. Of course Billy Knight’s Picture is now prominently displayed in every Dictionary under the Word MORON–a Picture tells a Thousand Words and Billy Knight is the Real Definition of MORON. I really don’t care about players’ attitudes or tendencies to complain to the refs or whatever. I only care about their production and impact while they are on the floor. The way this team is constructed currently, Smoove is the glue that holds the team together defensively. Even in last night’s defensive debacle, the Hawks were hanging in there until Smoove picked up his second foul and left the game, and immediately after this the Bulls rattled off 15 straight scoring possessions. By the time Smoove came back into the game the game was already out of hand and he was playing to avoid his 3rd foul instead of playing aggressively, and the defensive collapse continued.

Section 303,
You have the right to your opinion, and what you see is what you see. My question to you is if you never see Josh hustle, and 95% of the time he is pouting or arguing with the refs, then how on earth has he amassed over 1,000 blocks(that many is not random) in a 6 year period. One of the youngest people in the NBA to ever do that. He also has been our second or third leading scorer over the past couple of years. So how is he able to do all of those things and never hustle? If he doesn’t hustle, then what do Marvin and Joe do, because I have seen Josh streak by both of them many times to make a block. I know you don’t like Joe either, but what your opinion of Marvin? Does he always hustle? I was at the game last night, and I saw Teague pushing the ball up the court like he was told to do by Larry Drew, and not one player was up the floor, or sprinting up the floor with him including the great “Al Horford”. Oh, I forgot Al was hurt. LOL

Now maybe that says more about the quality of the rest of the team than it does about Smoove, but one way or the other, as long as the Hawks continue to roll with the current makeup of the roster, they are way too reliant on Smoove defensively for me to act like getting rid of him is going to solve this team’s problems.

If the Hawks somehow manage to land a Noah or Perkins or Dwight caliber defensive center, who will allow Al to shift over to power forward full time while also being able to convert their own offense at a respectable rate, then they will be able to realistically view Smoove’s defensive impact as being expendable. Until that point, it’s not.
And yes, Smoove is paid at a level more or less commensurate to his contributions by NBA standards, which is a big reason why he (and not Joe or Marvin for example) is a target of trade rumors in the first place.

Thanks. I would be very amenable to looking at a 1st rounder from the
Nets. They got their PG & Center now, Joe would give them a nice back court with some size and defense.
Especially, if that 1st pick is not lottery protected from 3 to 10.
If, I were a GM, I would jump on it and see if I couldn’t get that 1 to 2 if at all possible. I doubt that though.
I would hate to lose Joe, but we need some wiggle room to get better.
I see what Denver got for Melo and no one is crying in the Mile High.
Conversely, word on the street is, New York having buyer’s remorse right now. I saw a ticker on NBA TV that Knicks going through the Miami Heat syndrome, now.

“You need to stop being seduced by his random block or dunk.”
This notion that anyone who supports Smoove is in love with his dunking needs to stop. Dunkers are a dime a dozen in the NBA. I plain and simple do not care about his dunks. I’m a lot more impressed by Smoove’s low post moves, which have improved by leaps and bounds over the last three years, than I am by his dunks. It’s not like he even dunks that much anymore anyway.

Vava74 and O’Brien will tell you that the Bulls went on the run because Jamal Crawford was in the game. They will also say that the the GREAT defender Kirk Hinrich was not in either, and thats what caused the run.

“Smith loves his midrange jumper. So does Horford. Neither is comfortable setting up down on the blocks. Our best post player is actually Joe Johnson. It’s easy to say that we should play inside-out. I would agree with that, if our big men would play that way. ”
Then fine, post up Joe Johnson. Whatever. One way or another, the ball needs to go through the post every possession. The problem with saying get the ball to Joe and hope he recaptures the magic of previous seasons is that invariably this results in Joe getting the ball on the perimeter — often out of his own accord, when he sees a double team and backs out to the three point line instead of getting rid of it in a timely manner. And when Joe is on the perimeter, he’s not quick enough to break people down off the dribble, which means he invariably ends up launching contested jumpers. As far as I’m concerned, Joe launching contested jumpers is no better than Smoove launching uncontested jumpers. The end result is pretty much the same as far as my eyes can see, and maybe one of the advanced stat pages can confirm or deny this.

Rod from College Park, I don’t care about his stats. I know what I see. He does not play hard. He doesn’t.
Not counting the Orlando series (remember when Hubie Brown called him out on national tv?), Josh had a good year. He stopped with the long range shots. He mainly stayed down low and he attacked the rim on a consistent basis. The jumpers he took last year, almost always in that 15-foot range, which he can make.
This year….total opposite. And, really, should have saw that coming. He even said last year, in the SI interview, that he was going to start shooting 3’s again.
He’s been terrible this year. You go to games…don’t you see the walking up and down the floor? And, it’s all the time. The pouting on the bench? You don’t see that?

KevinM – No, the Bulls are only in decent financial shape because Rose is still under his rookie contract status. Once he gets out of that, the Bulls are in really bad shape.
Deng has a long term, enormous contract.
Boozer has a longer term, gigantic contract, and he’s getting older and he’s also injury prone.
And they have a good long term contract with Noah.
Korver is signed for too long at too much also.
And they gotta find money for Asik as well as DRose. No easy task, since Asik can be really good.
So the Bulls are only in good shape because of Rose and his rookie contract right now, no other reason. And they are in terrible shape once they sign Rose and Asik.
And don’t forget Gibson is still under rookie status also, and he’s going to want some good money as well.

These Hawks been seen hanging out at The velvet Room and Magic City and what not. Seems like to me they been hanging out with Charlie Sheen and his supplier, because they like him really believe they’re:
“Winning!”
But, I guess, (& I wouldn’t know this first hand) when your front pockets look like it’s the mumps and your hip pockets so swollen?
That when you sit down, you roll like a weeble – wobble but, you don’t fall down? It may very well seem like you’re “Winning!”
But, remember, the day after Charlie said that, he was terminated by CBS the very next day. So, sometimes “Winning!” Can be a losing proposition. Especially, when “That Goode” is talking.

That’s why I asked you the question. Iv’e seen everyone in the Hawks starting linup be terrible this year with the exception of Horford sometimes, on a regular basis. I see Marvin and Joe, walking/jogging back, and not giving full effort alot also. I also see them showing no emotion and being mutes. I think the pouting is what gets you so upset, and thats your right. I would much rather a guy pout and show some emotion, like he actually cares about what’s happening to him and his team than guys who never show emotion, and wrap their heads up on the bench and crack jokes when they are down by 40 points. Boozer for 4 more years at 61 mill total
Korver 2 more at 10 mill total
Brewer 2 more at 9 mill
Noah 5 years at over 60 mill
And you have to sign Rose and Asik after next season, and Gibson the year after that.
Read the Chicago papers, they’ll tell you.
And their owner is famously cheap, and doesn’t want to go into luxury tax either.
The contract they keep trying to dump is Deng. They say they cannot afford Rose, Noah, Boozer, and Deng, so it looks like Deng is odd man out, at least for now.

Zaza did make some bad plays on offense but even worse on defense. Coach Drew got all over Zaza on the bench but is he getting on Josh Smith for taking all those bad jumpers. Sometime he needs to pull him out the game for that crap too and chew him out. I’m really waiting to see if J-Smooth will even mature and stop crying about every call that doesn’t go his way. Joe is not a Superstar( NO HEART). A real superstar would let his team get destroyed like that especially on your home court. PEOPLE spend their hard earned money to see a good game. Win or lose I will always be a hawks fan but if I pay to go see THEM I want them to compete this all I ask. Some of you people need to settle down your ideas on blowing up this team. I am just as frustrated but all my emotion is aimed at Drew and the management.
This team is better than we have seen this year. For that matter, they are better than we saw last year. The coaching has been the problem.
I realize that this team’s players have issues – timid leadership, headstrong, lacks heart – but those issues are only issues when the coaching staff so completely fails them that they are left bewildered. Thus you hear JJ say, “I don’t even know what to say about it.”
Meanwhile Drew says, “Right now I think the most important thing with our team has nothing to do with Xs and Os.”
See that? Right there is the LOAD OF CRAP line. It has everything to do with Xs and Os. Drew is not putting this team in a position to be successful. His strategy is not working so he doubles down his criticism of the players. After he excluded himself from criticism for his strategy he went on to say, “It’s got to do with just our whole mental state. Coming out and playing hard and sustaining that and being able to play hard for four quarters. I am going to continue to try to preach that message. Hopefully it will get through as we wind down this regular season.”
There used to be a saying that the coach takes all the blame for the loss and gives all the credit to the players for a victory. (I bet Grandad knows the exact quote by heart).
Drew is sending his team out on the floor to play with poor rotations (Marvin starting, Teague out of rotation), players out of position (jamal at point), no rebounding (all 5 players running back on defense once the shot goes up), no post-up offense (all jumpshots), no accountability (Drew could make Josh stop shooting jumpshots if he wanted to just like Woodson did), etc. I’m sure others on the blog could add to the list.
Woodson got this same group of players to play some winning basketball with smoke and mirrors. But I think this group has enough talent to play a conventional brand of basketball and still win. We still need more balance on the roster and a center (I think we have found our point guard for the future and he ain’t named Kirk).

I’m not sure there was any one moment when
the game got out of hand.
Josh got two fouls and came out but Zaza came in
and mixed it up.
I thought the officials allowed contact inside when
we had the ball, yet when Chicago went inside it was
hands off Rose, as he has risen to LbJ, D.Wade, level.
Poor Zaza gets hammered on every shot but
gets to the line infrequently. [by comparison]
In no way am I saying the officials turned the game.
2 roughly the 3 min mark of the 1st qtr the Bulls
put their foot on our throat and we lay there passively.
Regardless of the early score Chi was playing with more
aggression. I felt like Boozer moreso than anyone set the
tone early with his Oakley[esque] physical presence.
All the Hawks (all of them) filed meekly off to slaughter.

Oooo, the Hawks can STINK up the place. To the owners of the Hawks, STOP BEING CHEAP!! I don’t care how hard Atlanta sportswriters try to make the Hawks sound cool by assigning nicknames to bench players who are posing as starters here. J.J.?? J. Smoove?? Really?? They can’t even carry the socks of PLAYERS like DWIGHT, K.G., Tim Duncan, (and for my nickname crew… Superman, The Big Ticket, and The Big Fundamental, acordingly). The difference is those with the slick nicnames have other components that comprise a team. The team has a following called fans (something that after 15 years in Atlanta I have yet to see rally…but then Atlanta has not had a team since Dominique.)
As for the coach, well, again, when there was a chance to get the good ones, the Hawks decided to go cheap. L.D. (henceforth to be known as “Losin’ Drew”) is a bench coach at best. He has no track record and any win he earns with the current lineup is a surprising moment. The Hawks passed on Avery Johnson, Byron Scott (Cavs), Mark D’Antonio (Knicks), and a boatload of others and they came up with L.D. (blank stare). Woody was by far a better coach. Although J. Smoove didn’t like him because Woody called his punk (expletive) out.
My other question is why do the Hawks continue to hang on to players that NO ONE ELSE would ever want. ZaZa? And the last time he was contributory to a win was….I’ll wait… I know he was from the Billy Knight era, but with Billy should ZaZa have faded. Along with J. Smoove, J.J. (I’m still wondering about that crazy contract he got), Marvin, etc.
No, Atlanta, the only star on the Hawks truly is Al Horford. He plays hard and with something you can’t teach, heart. I wish, for him, he gets traded and goes to a team that deserves his level of play. I’m sure he wishes he was Noah and the Bulls. Better team, better fan support, and a class organization that is committed to winning.
Although Atlanta got slammed last night, the entire organization should have been taking notes on how its done.
What an embarrasment….

We badly need to fire L.D. He’s completely destroying this franchise. I don’t know how much more the fans can take before people just stop showing up. Attendance is dwindling more and more, unless the fans are coming to watch the opposing team, and it looks like things are just going to get worse for the Hawks. It’s sad to see the consistent trend of improvement come to an end at the hands of a selfish, biased, clueless rookie coach. L.D. needs to go ASAP.

“SMDH LD going with the same lineup that has been getting smoked. Really LD?”
It seems like you scratch your head a lot these days. Almost every post I see from you includes “smh” in one form or another. If Drew finally just got fired, you wouldn’t have to scratch so much.

These guys are the worst team the Hawks have ever sent out on the floor, effort wise. A championship is out of the question. The only nicknames they deserve aren”t printable. If it were up to the fan on the street,(he is not in the stands) half these guys would be outta here after laying down in the playoffs last spring. Have fun spending your money Hawks and Go Braves!
