Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 114, Hawks 81

  • Perhaps it’s best to just skip those video “highlights” above.
  • The Hawks got down and stayed down. At Philips. Again. The Bulls balled and the Hawks bailed.
  • The Hawks checked out against Orlando last spring (can’t say they did the same vs. Bucks after that W in Game 6). This time it looks like they are doing it before the playoffs even start.
  • L.D. keeps preaching the same things and nothing changes. Is he still confident he can get through to this group?
  • “I am going to keep trying.” he said. “Right now I think the most important thing with our team has nothing to do with Xs and Os. It’s got to do with just our whole mental state. Coming out and playing hard and sustaining that and being able to play hard for four quarters. I am going to continue to try to preach that message. Hopefully it will get through as we wind down this regular season.”
  • That’s not exactly a stirring speech to rally the Hawks but, hey, at least it’s honest.
  • And, anyway, all the talk from the Hawks is getting old. At the expense of ticking off my blog people, who no doubt are sick and tired of hearing from the Hawks after games like this, I will share what they had to say. J.J. sounded as if he’s pretty tired of hearing it, too.
  • “We are a team that sits here in this locker room and talk about all the time ‘What we’ve got to do, what we need to do,’” he said. “And then we go out on the floor and do things that are out of our character. It makes us all look bad. Until we get that part of the game down we are going to continue to look bad. We have had countless meetings throughout the season that have meant nothing. I don’t even know what to say about it.”
  • Of course there is the possibility that what’s happening is completely in line with this group’s character. Could it be that the Hawks need a new mix of players and/or new voices?
  • “Maybe,” J.J. said. “Shaking it up a little always rejuvenates. I don’t know what we need. More so than anything come out and have each others’ backs. We haven’t been doing that, especially against upper-echelon teams. Teams that are not in the playoffs we will come out and play together and beat them. But the great teams, the top teams in the league, we come out and it seems like we don’t fight back.”
  • The Hawks now own the three worst home Ls in the league this season. “The [stuff] is starting to get embarrassing,” Smoove said. “We are too good of a team to be getting blown out in our own gym.”
  • “When you are at home you would think the sense of urgency would be there a little bit more and be jacked up and play with more energy,” Drew said. “We do the opposite for some reason. I am at a loss for words for that.”
  • Bulls fans invaded Philips but, as Drew said: “We should be used to it by now. It should be something we can totally just block it out and go play.”
  • Believe it or not the score was tied at 17-17 late in the first quarter. Then D-Rose and the Bulls put it on the Hawks and never let up.
  • “What happened the last time we were here was definitely on our minds,” Rose said. “We knew once we got that lead we couldn’t let that happen again.”
  • That was no sweat since the Hawks showed no indication that they wanted to make the Bulls work for it this time. “This team was up on us by 20 points at halftime last time we played here,” Smoove said. “We fought back, showed some resilliance. I seen the passion in our eyes and the will to win the game. Tonight it was just nonexistent.”
  • “It’s frustrating and it’s embarrassing as a competitor,” Marvin said. “I think everybody in here, including the coaching staff, is embarrassed with our effort today.”
  • “It went downhill very fast,” L.D. said. “It’s kind of a familiar sight to see–when a team makes a little run on us, our body language just changes. We have to learn how to respond in those situations. That’s just the bottom line. There is no magic pill. There is nothing to do but just roll your sleeves up and tough it a little bit more.”
  • Probably no one was going to slow D-Rose the way he was playing tonight. Teague didn’t even get a chance so I guess that means he’s officially dropped out of the rotation again.
  • Like he did at Chicago, D-Rose danced to the rim and did what he wanted without penalty.
  • “We didn’t run any coverages,” Josh said. “We didn’t help each other and when you don’t help each other it gets contagious. We was giving up too much stuff–junmp shots, dribble drives to the paint, wide open layups, and no one was giving hard fouls. We didn’t show any resistance.”
  • The Bulls are starting to look like the class of the East. They won despite injuries. They keep winning even as their schedule toughens. This is the time of the year when the real teams announce themselves and the Bulls are doing it.
  • “Give them credit,” J.J. said. “They have been the hottest team in the league and they have been showing it all year. They came in here and kicked our ass pretty much the whole game. It is what it is.”
  • It’s also the time of year when teams who once looked good are exposed as lacking what it takes. That’s the Hawks.
  • “It’s going to take action. Results,” Joe said. “We are getting nothing out of sitting in here and talking about it or talking to one another. We have got to go out there on the court and do it. It’s matter of going out there and putting forth the effort.”
  • L.D. took Zaza out of the game in the second half and the two had words. I couldn’t make out exactly what Zaza said but it looked like he wasn’t happy about whatever Drew said to him.
  • L.D. said he told Zaza he didn’t like the jump shot he attempted on the previous possession: “You don’t go on your own, you don’t start trying to do things you aren’t capable of doing. You don’t deviate from what the team is expecting. You continue to play the right way. That was either a shot where he saw he was about to come out of the game or just a bad shot.”
  • Said Zaza: “Obviously a game like that nobody feels good about it. We are not happy. These kind of things happen. We move on.”
  • Al left the game in the second half with a hamstring strain. “He was OK,” Drew said. “I think the hamstring is still bothering him a little bit. We sat him in the fourth quarter and hopefully he will be ready to go tomorrow.”

The Hawks are a lost group. So much talent wasted. And not enough self-respect to go around. Kids, don’t cry in the stands (or at home). They don’t care about you, so why should you care about them.

Why is Drew taking Teague out of the rotation again? What the f~ck kind of sh!t is this.

This team is just unbelievable. I wish I was looking forward to the Braves as the rest of you. I love the Braves but I dont follow baseball in-depth. I’ll watch a game every now and then. But in all honesty I can’t tell a curve ball from a slider. Or a fast ball from a knuckle ball……or whatever it’s called.

~

Larry Drew needs to sit his a$$ back in the assistant coachs chair. Or better yet move on down to where ever the towel boy sits. Even Woodson was’nt this bad. Drew is soft. The players are only tough as their coach is. Drew called out Zaza. Wow! Zaza!?

I’d just like to correct myself for predicting that New York, with its much softer schedule, would overtake the Hawks in the standings. Despite the Hawks going 3-7 over their last 10, the Knicks have been overtaken by the 76ers. What an inspired hire to bring back Doug Collins, one of the most underrated coaches of all time. Look what he has done for Elton Brand’s career. Wouldn’t it be great if the 76ers overtook the Hawks? What a great story that would be. Hello Heat in round 1!

“LD’s a bully. He picks on bench guys, but nary a word to his regualars or Jamal. Bibby or Mo either. Picks on guys he can hurt their playing time. What a joke.” – SteveW

“He gives Jeff praise all day and all night, but still doesn’t use him until we are being blown out (most of the time).” – K.W.

Larry Drew is a disingenuous person. That means he doesn’t tell the truth. He’s a liar. And at this point, I could really believe whoever it was that speculated that LD thinks his son is going to one day come to the Hawks and take over at PG. It’s like he’s desperately trying to keep JT off the floor cause he’s saving LD II a spot. And I think he’s jealous of the fact that Teague AND his brother have more talent than LD’s entire brood. Jealous of Kendall Marshall and his obese parents now Sharon Drew?

“Pape Sy comes in and plays like Lebron James in the playoffs. Or is that the Hawks-meth talking?” – Matt

Definitely the meth talking. Pape Sy can’t bring the ball up against D-League defense. He will never be a rotation NBA player. When his paychecks run out with the Hawks, he will head back to Europe in hopes of getting another paycheck and some minutes off the bench.

“Teague and Horford should be the captians. Everybody else is tradeable at this point.” – Booo!

For those of you lamenting Drew’s handling of Teague, let me provide you with the following ray of sunshine. Teague will outlast Larry Drew, Jamal Crawford and Kirk Hinrich with this Atlanta Hawks organization. He can become a restricted free agent after 2013/2014 and is signed to a very reasonable rookie scale contract paying $1.5m then $2.5m then $3.5m over the next three seasons. Teague IS THE FUTURE at the point guard position for the Hawks because JJ’s contract precludes them from getting anybody else. I don’t want to entertain any fantasies about getting Raymond Felton, even though he refuses to be a backup to Ty Lawson in Denver.

So after this season, Crawford is gone. He has faded badly this year and there’s no way the Hawks would go into the luxury tax to retain his diminishing services. That gives the Hawks a 3-guard rotation next year of Teague, JJ and Hinrich, assuming there is a next season. After next season, Hinrich comes off the books. Again, no way the Hawks keep him beyond his contract year unless he signs for a fraction of his current salary ($9m).

What we saw immediately after the Bibby trade was that Teague has finally arrived. He doesn’t have a jumper but neither does Rajon Rondo. He will never be the passer that Rondo is, but he can create the same problems with his quickness, defense and ability to get in the lane and score and draw fouls. LD can bury him on the bench until he’s fired or his contract runs out after next season, but Teague will still be here and TEAGUE CAN PLAY. The future is bright for the Hawks at the PG position… we finally found our guy.

Another happy side affect of Crawford’s absense from the rotation starting next year is that Marvin will finally have a chance to get consistent shots and establish himself as a legitimate starter in the NBA. He will never live up to the expectations he came into the league with. But with the right coaching and opportunities within the offense, he can become a player who is worth his salary. This can never happen as long as Crawford is there to hoist jumpers and play zero defense.

“WHY CAN’T THIS TEAM REBOUND? Every time we get burned bad we are outrebounded like crazy.” – HoosierHawk

Northcyde covered this… Rebounding is about desire, and COACHING. Not only do the Hawks take ill-advised long jump shots, you see 5 guys running back on defense while the ball is still in the air. They aren’t even expected to crash the boards, and that is a coaching issue. The right coach could get effort out of these guys. It looked like Elton Brand’s career was over but look what happened when he got a little inspired.

“His great numbers that mask the fact they never could pull a team over the top.” – JSS

When you look at what’s going on with New York right now, JJ is a very comparable player to Melo. They are both isolation players and volume shooters. Volume shooter means they have a high points per game average, but only because they take a lot of shots. This means they are not efficient players. Al Horford is an efficient player. He has one of the highest shooting percentages in the NBA, and it would make more sense from the standpoint of a team trying to win to feature him more in the offense.

This is why we keep talking about the Hawks’ failure to hire a statistician. If they had consulted someone versed in advanced stats before signing JJ to a max contract, they would have known that his numbers are inflated by the sheer volume of shots he was allowed to take by Woody and now LD. The Hawks organization would have been much better off trading him to New Jersey last offseason for 1 or 2 future lottery picks, where they could have had a chance to land a superstar on a rookie scale contract and maintain financial flexibility to bring in players who COULD put the Hawks over the top. Something JJ cannot, as JSS so accurately observed.

I remember how angry I was after the beatdown that Hawks took from the Celtics early in the season. But last night I just laughed my way through the game while Teague sat on the bench. I really got some great belly-laughs every time Teague hit a 3 and made that great block.

Larry Drew has driven this team off the road and over a cliff. Even with the playoffs coming in three weeks the Hawks should consider firing him immediately. The anger of the fan base is only going to grow when we experience this HOT MESS in the playoffs.

“Most telling, over the course of the competitive portion of the game, was that Rose led his team in field goal attempts while Horford, despite going 6-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line, took just the fourth-most shots of the Hawks’ starters. Josh Smith attempted as many jump shots as Al Horford attempted shots in this game.” — Brett LaGree, ESPN.com

MC:

“That’s not exactly a stirring speech to rally the Hawks but, hey, at least it’s honest.”

SAY WHAT???

Honest would be if he told the truth and acknowledged that he does not know what he is doing.

The problem IS Xs and Os. The problem is LD. The talent level that we have is more than enough to be competitive.

I hate to bring this up again BUT:

We were down 2 when Jamal came in and down 17 when he ended his shift while he brought ZERO on offense.

This has been a staple of most of our losses against playoff teams: we start out reasonably well, focused, fighting (with some obvious problems) and when Jamal comes in it all falls like a house of cards (LAL, MIA games).

A variation on this is when Jamal does provide offense and then LD keeps him too long and the offense he brought is wiped out by is lacking D (see the DEN game at home as an example).

Another example of LD’s horrible disingenuous self?

“L.D. said he told Zaza he didn’t like the jump shot he attempted on the previous possession: “You don’t go on your own, you don’t start trying to do things you aren’t capable of doing. You don’t deviate from what the team is expecting. You continue to play the right way. That was either a shot where he saw he was about to come out of the game or just a bad shot.”

So Zaza’s jumpshot from the FT line – an open shot, within his range – was a bad shot???

And what about the dozens of bad shots that Smoove puts up per game? Where is the accountability?

Against MIA Josh shot 5 or 6 long jump shots in 6 minutes of play missing all of them and only the LD made something about it but later in the game when Josh again jacked up a couple of early possession jays LD did nothing.

What about the 2 quick jump shots Josh launched yesterday to open the 3rd quarter? Weren’t those bad shots?

I grant that the game was lost by then but to start the second half exhibiting the same mistakes we do over and over and not doing anything as an HC to correct them by pulling the player that makes the mistake leads to what???

Where is the criteria when in the pre-season LD said that he wanted Josh in the paint and then half way the season, when things were starting to go south and his shot selection and % was clearly going down the drain, he said that he can live with Josh’s long jump shots, his turnovers on the break and his backboard wrecking half court passes???

Where is the criteria when he says that Teague bring us so many different things and then is benched with DNP-CD in order to “get Jamal out of a slump”???

You “reward” a young and promising player who is starting to show he can contribute with DNP-CD to then “compensate” a streaky, undisciplined, no defense player like Jamal with extensive minutes at the PG where he is HORRIBLE for him to break out of a “slump”???

An alleged slump which no more no less than Jamal being Jamal since his season FG% levels for this year are identical to his careers?

All supposedly because Teague can’t score and will be exploited by opposing teams???

Didn’t he shoot the rock well yesterday? Doesn’t his performance yesterday show that when he gets his confidence established his shot will start to fall consistently?

Teague shot .441 from the shorter 3 point land in his second season in College.

Is it that difficult to believe that if given minutes to develop he would equal Jamal’s .339 whilst bringing D ?? (or equal Josh’s .326, who has a green light to shoot whilst missing in action in the paint?)

w-o-w! i didn’t realize how important bibby was to this team! say what you want to about bibby–he was the glue that made the team stay together. grant it he is getting old, can’t defend, can’t penetrate, can’t jump and really don’t pass all that well–but i’ll tell you this about him–he could atleast somehow manage to keep the hawks somewhat a float the past few years.

last night was a train wreck in slow motion!!! our offense is a disaster. the hawks shoot shots with absolutely no one underneath the basket. the opponent shoots shots with two players charging for the boards. we shoot ft’s and our lane guys don’t even look to see if they go in before they had back to the defensive end. they shoot ft’s and if they miss–the opponent challenges for the rebound.

we’re broke in every area–if this was a normal franchise i would expect to see hawks fire larry drew on the bottom line of espn today–but hey were the hawks–let’s see if he can turn them around by playoff time…or maybe bring bibby back as a player assistant.

I actually agree with what Joe Johnson is saying. The Hawks just need to shutup and play. Their stupid meetings and repeated quotes to the media have not provided anything.

Have to ask….is there anyone out there, besides Najeh, that thinks Josh Smith is worth keeping around? I’ve gotten to the point where I just cannot stand that guy (Josh, not Najeh). He’s lazy. Walking up the court every time up and down the court, the jumpers takes and can’t make, the lip he gives LD, sitting at the end of the bench during TO’s….how is this tolerated? The guy needs to be sent on his way. At this point, I really don’t care who/what they get for him. As long as he is not a Hawk, that’s all that matters to me.

Mark Bradley called Josh one of the most talented players in the league….Mark Bradley needs to get his head examined. This “talent” that clown is alleged to have, does not exist. Stop getting fooled by the random dunk/blocked shot….pay attention to the 99% of the time he coasts up and down the floor and kills this team with attitude and jumpers. Get rid of Josh Smith!

People asking for JT to start at the point reminds me of the NFL when people start asking for the backup quarterback and when he gets in they see why he is the backup.

No one is going to stop Rose or any of the quality NBA players. What you need is quality players to offset what they do. JT was a college player who was good at driving to the basket and looking for his shot.(not a NBA point guard quality) He cannot create for others.

As long as Smoove is aloud to bring the ball down the court and spend the majority of the offense at the 3 point line the hawks will not improve.

For you new hawks fans, we once had Nique Wilkins for our superstar and his play was just like Smooves. They brought in Lenny Wilkens as coach who benched Nique he strayed from what the caoch wanted him to do. That year he played the best ball of his career. Because Lenny got tired of forcing him to be a team player he was traded the next year for what proved to be big mistake for Danny Manning.

You guys are idiots. Dwight Howard would never come here. He is going to the Lakers after he becomes a FA.

You are stuck with me as the centerpiece for the next 6 years.. 20 million a year yummy

From mark Bradley;

This is why you don’t promote the nice-guy assistant. Because the players who’ve known him only as the nice-guy assistant will quit on him. And if you think the Hawks are still playing hard for Larry Drew, how are we to explain the misdoings of the past three weeks?

The Hawks have lost six home games in 18 days. (By way of comparison, they lost seven home games all last season.) Only one of these six losses has been by fewer than 13 points. Average margin of the six losses — 17.2 points..

How does a team go 65-17 at home the last 2 seasons, but end up losing 15 games so far at home this season, and not only are they losing, but they have the 3 worst home losses in the NBA this season.

I would fire LD, and trade one of the core players this offseason.

And for the record, I dont think Kirk is excellent. but I think he is a solid PG. However, with the way our team is playing right now, they can make anybody look bad, and they can make any opposing player look good.

To be fair to Marvin, some of the shots Deng made were contested. And if you play good defense, and the guy still makes the shot, there is nothing you can do.
