Atlanta Hawks: Bulls 114, Hawks 81
12:13 am March 23, 2011, by Michael Cunningham
- Perhaps it’s best to just skip those video “highlights” above.
- The Hawks got down and stayed down. At Philips. Again. The Bulls balled and the Hawks bailed.
- The Hawks checked out against Orlando last spring (can’t say they did the same vs. Bucks after that W in Game 6). This time it looks like they are doing it before the playoffs even start.
- L.D. keeps preaching the same things and nothing changes. Is he still confident he can get through to this group?
- “I am going to keep trying.” he said. “Right now I think the most important thing with our team has nothing to do with Xs and Os. It’s got to do with just our whole mental state. Coming out and playing hard and sustaining that and being able to play hard for four quarters. I am going to continue to try to preach that message. Hopefully it will get through as we wind down this regular season.”
- That’s not exactly a stirring speech to rally the Hawks but, hey, at least it’s honest.
- And, anyway, all the talk from the Hawks is getting old. At the expense of ticking off my blog people, who no doubt are sick and tired of hearing from the Hawks after games like this, I will share what they had to say. J.J. sounded as if he’s pretty tired of hearing it, too.
- “We are a team that sits here in this locker room and talk about all the time ‘What we’ve got to do, what we need to do,’” he said. “And then we go out on the floor and do things that are out of our character. It makes us all look bad. Until we get that part of the game down we are going to continue to look bad. We have had countless meetings throughout the season that have meant nothing. I don’t even know what to say about it.”
- Of course there is the possibility that what’s happening is completely in line with this group’s character. Could it be that the Hawks need a new mix of players and/or new voices?
- “Maybe,” J.J. said. “Shaking it up a little always rejuvenates. I don’t know what we need. More so than anything come out and have each others’ backs. We haven’t been doing that, especially against upper-echelon teams. Teams that are not in the playoffs we will come out and play together and beat them. But the great teams, the top teams in the league, we come out and it seems like we don’t fight back.”
- The Hawks now own the three worst home Ls in the league this season. “The [stuff] is starting to get embarrassing,” Smoove said. “We are too good of a team to be getting blown out in our own gym.”
- “When you are at home you would think the sense of urgency would be there a little bit more and be jacked up and play with more energy,” Drew said. “We do the opposite for some reason. I am at a loss for words for that.”
- Bulls fans invaded Philips but, as Drew said: “We should be used to it by now. It should be something we can totally just block it out and go play.”
- Believe it or not the score was tied at 17-17 late in the first quarter. Then D-Rose and the Bulls put it on the Hawks and never let up.
- “What happened the last time we were here was definitely on our minds,” Rose said. “We knew once we got that lead we couldn’t let that happen again.”
- That was no sweat since the Hawks showed no indication that they wanted to make the Bulls work for it this time. “This team was up on us by 20 points at halftime last time we played here,” Smoove said. “We fought back, showed some resilliance. I seen the passion in our eyes and the will to win the game. Tonight it was just nonexistent.”
- “It’s frustrating and it’s embarrassing as a competitor,” Marvin said. “I think everybody in here, including the coaching staff, is embarrassed with our effort today.”
- “It went downhill very fast,” L.D. said. “It’s kind of a familiar sight to see–when a team makes a little run on us, our body language just changes. We have to learn how to respond in those situations. That’s just the bottom line. There is no magic pill. There is nothing to do but just roll your sleeves up and tough it a little bit more.”
- Probably no one was going to slow D-Rose the way he was playing tonight. Teague didn’t even get a chance so I guess that means he’s officially dropped out of the rotation again.
- Like he did at Chicago, D-Rose danced to the rim and did what he wanted without penalty.
- “We didn’t run any coverages,” Josh said. “We didn’t help each other and when you don’t help each other it gets contagious. We was giving up too much stuff–junmp shots, dribble drives to the paint, wide open layups, and no one was giving hard fouls. We didn’t show any resistance.”
- The Bulls are starting to look like the class of the East. They won despite injuries. They keep winning even as their schedule toughens. This is the time of the year when the real teams announce themselves and the Bulls are doing it.
- “Give them credit,” J.J. said. “They have been the hottest team in the league and they have been showing it all year. They came in here and kicked our ass pretty much the whole game. It is what it is.”
- It’s also the time of year when teams who once looked good are exposed as lacking what it takes. That’s the Hawks.
- “It’s going to take action. Results,” Joe said. “We are getting nothing out of sitting in here and talking about it or talking to one another. We have got to go out there on the court and do it. It’s matter of going out there and putting forth the effort.”
- L.D. took Zaza out of the game in the second half and the two had words. I couldn’t make out exactly what Zaza said but it looked like he wasn’t happy about whatever Drew said to him.
- L.D. said he told Zaza he didn’t like the jump shot he attempted on the previous possession: “You don’t go on your own, you don’t start trying to do things you aren’t capable of doing. You don’t deviate from what the team is expecting. You continue to play the right way. That was either a shot where he saw he was about to come out of the game or just a bad shot.”
- Said Zaza: “Obviously a game like that nobody feels good about it. We are not happy. These kind of things happen. We move on.”
- Al left the game in the second half with a hamstring strain. “He was OK,” Drew said. “I think the hamstring is still bothering him a little bit. We sat him in the fourth quarter and hopefully he will be ready to go tomorrow.”

@doc, yes what you say is true, but none of the problems with the Hawks are new. Except for Drew, and to some extent JC1, all the limitation predate Rick Sund.

It seems to me like ASG is content on being an average playoff team…I’ve said countless times, even before this lil 3-4 year playoff run, that ATL Hawks need a “superstar”…The team needs it b/c Joe obviously can’t handle being top dawg and this team has no leader to put em in their place..I am a long time ATL fan and I can’t stand it when I go into the arena and see more LAL MIA NYK jerseys than ATL jerseys or see more empty seats than ppl, so this city definately needs a superstar to rally around…Too bad JJ contract holds alot, but other that Horford and Teague, they need to open to trading em all and make it a priority to get a decent center for Horfords sake…Peace…

“3-2 when Teague plays 20+ minutes. 3-7 when he doesn’t.
Just saying.
Teague = really the only reason I continue to watch Hawks games.”
Co-sign that last sentence of your post. I’ve felt this way all season to be honest with you. Felt that way about Teague and JC2. After last season’s whopping we took in the playoffs, I was hoping Drew would’ve handled young talent better than Woody did, but that hasn’t been the case. At some point this season, I pretty much lost all hope for this squad, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. The only thing that kept me intrigued was the hope of seeing the rooks. We’ve come to know what to expect out of this team, mediocority. Seeing young guys get playing time at least adds an element of surprise/uncertainty to the games.

So tired of the talk, only to get blow out, over, and over, and over ,and over…
Not even fun to watch anymore when you know the outcome. We either blow out or barely win vs scrub teams, and barely win or are blown out vs good teams. There is no inbetween, those are the only results.
This off-season is going to be do or die for the ASG and Rick Sund. If they can’t vastly improve this team, and make it fun to watch again, then the Hawks are going to see Thrasher-like attendance.

Loved niq, here was guy who had great talent ,he didn’t even have a decent jump shot when he came into the league but didn’t waste time before he had a great one.he had more desire & heart than anyone on our team, he always gave 200 % he certainly would have been a lot better coach than ld.

At this point, mediocrity is an understatement. This team has no direction, no leadership, no pride, and little hope for the future. The only thing I am happy about now is that Jordan Crawford does not have to put up with this ish anymore. He will be an all-star in 2 years if that long.
Feel bad for Teague and ZaZa. Both deserve more playing time than all of our starters.
It is my prediction that if we keep the same core, head coach, and ASG group beyond this year, we will be the worst team in the NBA.

We can all agree that Mr. Woodson had ran his course and continue that bebate into eternity. But, he took this team to a point that we will never see again.
In Mr. Woodson’s defense? He took a 13 win team, developed what talent he had. Without a PG and Center he was cooking with old fish grease and served one tasty meal. He milked this roster into two round 2 beat downs and we will never even see that again in our lifetimes.
He had Josh and Al glued to the paint, lead the league in fewest TO’s,
we went from to 3rd best offense ranking to 25th, top tier rebounding team to 29th and josh taking 7 three point attempts to 150?. This team was disciplined and as flawed as this roster is we were 13th in defense.
________________
When Sund and ASKG laid all the blame at his feet? They collectively put the light on the real problem, when they stuck their back sides out the window of the glass tower penthouse floor. When we pounded this blog with more heart and demanded block buster trades? They did nothing but say, “we like our core!” They flipped the door sign from open to closed and has been closed ever since.
________________
In a way, I’m glad this team is being exposed for what they are:
Snake Oil. Perhaps, they will lower their asking price and find a buyer before next season starts. These 8 feces throwing orangutans are misers. They are wealthy but was never rich. These cats bought this team thinking they would be licking their fingers and counting their money with minimal input. But, their plan was always to operate on the cheap. They have filed more lawsuits in court than a criminal prosecutor
ever could in, a crime leading metropolitan city.
Slimjr, have you ever seen the eight of them sit court side to watch their own product? And, they want me to do that? I’d rather go to
Zoo Atlanta and see a real live orangutan throw his feces at a bamboon’s azz! They do it with more heart. I am so apathetic right now, these losses don’t even bother me one bit.

And to berate ZaZa for taking an 18 foot jumper?
That was bush league and borderline asinine. ZaZa was the only big on the floor that plays with more heart than the bench warming starter lined bench.
Rather than do that? Drew should have focused on a better game plan and put his foot so far in the starters azz, that the naval’s should have been dialing 911.

******************
Because Horford and Smith aren’t willing to mix it up on the inside every night. They pick and choose their spots to rebound. On offense, they’d rather play 15 – 20 feet from the basket, virtually taking themselves away from grabbing offensive rebounds. On defense, they sometimes don’t box people out, allowing the opponent to swoop in and get offensive rebounds. Smith is notorious for this.
Then you have others like JJ and Marvin who don’t help matters either, despite both being fairly large players for their position. And our reserve big men, other than Zaza, are pitiful on the boards.
Rebounding is about effort and desire. And there’s no one on the team that aspires to be a great rebounder. Horford and Smith could be, but that’s not what they’d rather do. They both would rather be great jumpshooters than great rebounders.

“I am going to keep trying.” he said.
As I stated in a previous blog, “Do or Do not, never TRY” Trying is for losers. So, LD Tag, you’re it! I disagree with LD assessment of the game, X’s and O’s are also part of the problem. The #1 problem is DEFENSE. They can’t STOP their opponents even if their life depended on it. When your opponent shoots 76% in the 1st half while the Hawks shoots 50%, and still down by 20 points, the problem is clearly defense. At the beginning of the season, LD trashed Woody’s switching defense. He made it clear, that the Hawks was going to “man-up” and guard their man one-on-one. But since these pretenders don’t know how to fight through screens, they will always be subjected to blow-outs. This time, however, they can’t blame Bibby because he’s not here. Actually in the 2nd half, the Hawks went to a switching defense with some success, but by then, the bulls was in a groove and the game was out of reach; Again, a day late with the adjustments and a dollar short.
These players need a coach to show them the errors of their ways. LD can’t just tell his players to just play harder and work things out for themselves. They need directions to play SMARTER. He has lost his team because he’s lost his “coaching voice” and not showing them anything relevant, just to play harder I say that because they seem ignorant of what they are doing wrong. LD has re-defined the word insanity and the players have grown tired of it as evident from JJ (out of character) outburst:
“We are a team that sits here in this locker room and talk about all the time ‘What we’ve got to do, what we need to do,’” he said. “And then we go out on the floor and do things that are out of our character. It makes us all look bad. Until we get that part of the game down we are going to continue to look bad. We have had countless meetings throughout the season that have meant nothing. I don’t even know what to say about it.”
If LD had some real balls, he’ll fire his assistant defensive coach Kenny Gattison tomorrow just to shake things up. It would likely have “zero effect” since he as had “zero effect”. What exactly has he brought to the table anyway? These blow-outs are a direct result of poor defense and he hired him for that reason. In that regard, we have gone from the penthouse to the “out-house” in one season. Just like his players, his coaching staff should also be held accountable. Perhaps it a moot point anyway, if the owners are selling the team, LD is a “dead man walking”.

For JJ to be top dog, he’s going to have to take over the offense like he used to. And that means to keep the ball in his hands. In Drew’s system, that’s not called for him to do that.
But I do agree that either he can’t handle being “top dog”, and the scrutiny that goes along with it . . or he doesn’t have the mental toughness to be “top dog”. JJ is way to passive at times, and doesn’t look to take a game over ( other than the game the other night in which he went crazy from 3 point range ). Superstars don’t defer to teammates. Teammates defer to superstars.
People want Horford to be the leader of this team, but he’s no true leader either. He just speaks well. And he doesn’t have the talent to exert his will ( whether it be offensively or defensively ) on the opponent. If he wanted to be “top dog”, he’d demand the ball more, even to the point of pissing off his teammates. But he doesn’t. And when he doesn’t get the ball, he doesn’t fight for offensive boards either.
Ironically though, Smith has the “top dog” mentality. I think he definitely wants it. It just that he doesn’t have the skillset to be “top dog”. His skillset is that of a great utility player, like a young Shawn Marion. But Marion could never be counted on to get the job done in a “superstar” like manner. And the same thing goes for Smith.
So without a superstar present, those 3 are going to have to bond together, and try to put the team on their backs. In the end, it’s going to be up to those 3 to get the job done.

For all of you who think Marvin an Kirk are such great defensive players, Chicago’s starting point guard and starting small forward combined for 57 points while shooting well over 50% from the field, while Marvin and Kirk combined for a total of 9pts. So not only did they not defend anybody, they provided no offense either. But Kirk is an EXCELLENT player (LOL).

Yeah Rod. That Kirk is “excellent” or “very good” talk should quiet down a bit. That’s the problem with a lot of us fans. Whatever player we like, we tend to overrate him. There’s no way when you stack Hinrich against the other starting PGs in the league, that he rates out to be a “very good” PG.
The dude is barely a true floor leader. He’s more of a combo guard, than a true PG.

But who is to say that Woody would have been any better with this new found EAST COAST while keeping this same team?? LD IS Woody for all I know cause guess what, that ISO Joe strategy that Woody would ONLY use was FINALLY exposed during last season BLOWOUT in the playoffs. Had Woody still been a head coach this season WITH the East being what it is and WITH our same players, we would NOT have been in 5th place today. These fans are STONE BLIND! Do any1 in the ATL understand what’s happening? I will tell you once again.
#1 ASG don’t care about a black fanbase(white folks wouldn’t tolerate players like JJ/JS and would demand for them to be eradicated from the team and ASG will make it happen)
#2 JJ could careless how black folks feel about him. He gets a kick out of making the fanbase feel bad after losing games at home.(didn’t anyone see him shoot the ball after LD called a timeout when they were getting mugged by the Bulls?) Playing at home gives this clown pleasure to manipulate the fans). Too his credit he at least tried to tell you people that he doesn’t like you when he said he could careless if you came to the games or not. Don’t you people know a devil when you see one?
#3 JS is no difference. He is a spoil brat who wasn’t raise properly. He too could careless how the fans feel about him because keep shooting jumpers, dribbling ball upcourt and throwing the ball cross court when his pg is closest to him.
#4 This is ORGANIZE RACKETTEERING at best( you people are paying ASG enough money to keep the 8 members in the ATL even when they refuse to satisfy the fans.
#5 When you got players(JJ/JS) who done respect the game, it doesn’t matter what player you sign they will never be effected as a teammate.
For those who keep calling for JT to get minutes, FORGET ABOUT IT! As long as those 2 CULPRITS(JJ/JS) are on the team a pg has no chance.
Just MAYBE and I mean MAYBE! Maybe Bill Laimbeer can do something with those 2 CULPRITS(JJ/JS)

Yeah, I thought maybe they confused him with George Teague too. Maybe Jeff is destined to one day go tackle some opposing player who celebrates in the middle of the court at Philips after a dunk or something.

When you got players who don’t respect the game…..[modified]

I still can’t get over that “old fish grease” analogy! LMAO!!!
Look, the best you going to get out of Joe Johnson is that he is a new age Phil Chenier or Kevin Grevey. His great numbers that mask the fact they never could pull a team over the top. Horford is like Oakley without the tenacity on the boards. Josh is a bit like Aguirre until Chuck Daly came along and gave him a super defined role on those Pistons teams.

I am pretty sure Zaza will hit more of those shots than Jsmoove. LD has the same exact mentality as Mike Woodson when it comes to player development and the use of his bench.
