Bulls at Atlanta Hawks: Is it really about the intangibles?

When the Hawks started the season hot, J.J. was the one guy who always said he wasn’t impressed because they were beating up on lesser teams.

Now that they are taking regular beat downs from better teams, does he think the Hawks still believe they can get on a roll?

“Definitely,” he said. “We know we can beat any team in the league. It’s just a matter of us bringing our ‘A’ game every night. We can’t play down to our opponents [and] when we play teams on our level or that people think are above us, we have got to take it up two more notches.”

Soon after Hinrich joined the team, he said: “Since I’ve been here we’ve talked about defending and bringing the energy. And when we do that we can be a tough team because of the talent we have and athletes and the shooters. If we can lock down on the defensive end, it will make the game a lot easier for us.”

Now the Hawks are defending better (for the most part) but things haven’t been at all easy because they struggle to score despite the talent and athleticism and shooting hasn’ that Hinrich talked about.

Does he think the Hawks still believe they can be a “tough” team like he said back then?

“I believe that way and I feel like everyone in this room does,” Hinrich said. “We’ve had some bumps, we haven’t played well at times but I think everyone believes if we put our minds to it [we can do it]. That’s kind of what we are trying to focus on these last 12 games: every game going out there and gearing up for the playoffs and play playoff basketball and hopefully be ready for the playoffs.”

J.J. and Hinrich aren’t talking about intangibles, not talent. Ken S. had a nice story the other day on the leadership void in the locker room. It was an issue last season, too, and it’s an issue again with the same mix of guys (now notably minus Bibby’s silly influence since the deadline).

But I still think it’s too simple to blame Atlanta’s struggles on intangible things like a lack of leadership. There are so many tangible, quantifiable and observable issues with this team that it’s no great mystery why they are struggling now that the competition has gotten tougher at the same time the calendar says it’s time for the real teams get serious.

For instance, do the Hawks take too many jump shots because they lack leadership? Or, is it like J.J. says, do they not work the post and drive to the basket for scores or fouls because they just aren’t built that way? Remember, the Hawks have been a jump-shooting team all season but L.D. didn’t really start harping on that until the jump shots stopped falling (and, in fact, he’s pretty much encouraged them in Smoove’s case).

Similarly, does the lack of leadership prevent the Hawks from getting back to defend in transition? Or is it just that they aren’t good at it because all those missed shots from a jump-shooting team, combined with no consistent rebounding outside of Smoove and Al, leading to easy chances on the break for their opponents?

All of this is not to say the Hawks don’t sometimes give in too easily when things get tough. But I think they give in because they realize they aren’t good enough to do what’s necessary to win when Plan A doesn’t work. The Hawks are a pretty good team. They could try harder, be tougher, show more heart or whatever and I still don’t think they can overcome their shortcomings to become a very good or great team.

But that’s somewhat speculative on my part, and I understand the frustration of fans who believe the Hawks could be much better if they had more leadership, heart, toughness, etc. And it would be a nice change of pace to see the Hawks at least try to consistently minimize their weaknesses, exploit their strengths, use all of their bona fide rotation players in roles suited for them and see what happens.

Time is running our for the Hawks to figure it out but they insist they still can do it.

“I still think there’s a belief in that,” L.D. said. “Everybody is aware we haven’t had a great March but we are still in position with 12 games left. It’s just a matter of getting on a roll. There are some teams that have struggled in the East and some still struggling. Chicago is the one team that has been the most consistent. Everyone else has had ups and downs.

“I still think it’s wide open. I really hope that our guys still believe they can get on a roll and anything can happen.”

The Hawks can start against the Bulls.

“I think we are still a confident group,” Al said. “Tonight is a big game.”

Damien has an interesting perspective on all of this. I asked him if he’s ever played on a team that struggled and then got it together in the final month and made a run. Soon after the question was out of my mouth I realized he hasn’t been on a good team since he was a rookie in Seattle.

Now he’s on a team that’s struggling but that he still thinks has a shot.

“That’s why, to me, it was never really a big panic or as big of a deal as it seemed,” he said. “Because, I’m like, everyone is panicking around here and I know we lost a couple games we should have won and didn’t play as well as we should have but at the end of the day we are still the fifth seed. So to me I am still excited.

“I think our effort against Miami, it was almost as if we packed in the season it looked like. Looking back, I can understand why the panic has set in for everybody, or it seemed like it. They know we are a better team than this. But at the end of day I am still excited because I have a chance to get in the playoffs and once you get there the seeds and the records go out the window. It’s about execution and adjustments. We will see what happens when we get there.”

Game notes

  • L.D. is using the Hinrich, J.J., Marvin, Smoove, Al lineup tonight: “I like the size that it gives us. It gives us another shooter in Marvin at the three spot, particularly when teams are double-teaming us. It’s our regular lineup with an upgrade at the point position. It gives us a little more flexibility to go with our regular rotations.”
  • L.D on the tough closing slate: “The schedule is what it is. We take them one at a time. We are in a position where we can control our own destiny. We are playing at home against good teams. We should feel good about that.”
  • Hinrich on the same topic: “Since I’ve been here our schedule has been brutal. It is what it is. It’s the NBA; there are no nights off. We just need to focus on ourselves and bring a tough mindset every night and hang together as a group and we will be all right.”
  • After the Hawks held down Rose in the first meeting, he went off in the second half in Chicago (aided by Hinrich’s foul trouble). Rose was 8 of 8 on free throws after halftime, 14 of 15 for the game. “We have to keep Rose off the free-throw line as much as we can,” Drew said.
  • The Bulls are a middling offensive team but they crushed Sacto last night. Deng was the only starter to play more than 28 minutes. The Bulls are 13-5 in the second night of back-to-back.

From the previous blog…

“Our best looking games this past month came when temper tantrum throwing Josh Smith was out.

I don’t have the numbers, but know most of you would love to look them up. Someone prove me wrong cause I really think I am right on this one…”

In my opinion, the three best Hawks victories over the last month — taking into account margin of victory and quality of opponent — were the two wins over Portland and the win over Chicago. Smoove was out against Chicago, and Al was out in the second win against Portland. I don’t think either of their absences in either of those wins proves much.

Somebody find Teague, he’s lost again, “lost on that damn bench…” Hands down LD is not ready to coach this NBA team. Perhaps he would be a good fit for a different team.

I for one think the Hawks could develop an inside game (at least a passable one) if their were inclined to do so. We had one once upon a time. I seem to remember a season when Smoove didn’t shoot ANY jumpers. What happened to that? Seems we won more games back then.

Again, with this lineup the Hawks are 2-4. Marvin is the odd man out. he should be on the bench. I am a Hawks fan, but I really hope they lose out until LD decides to play Teague at point.

So now he says they should keep Rose off the foul line. Funny, because in the aftermath of that second-half debacle, LD said the main problem was that they didn’t foul Rose hard when he got in the lane.

I wonder if LD realizes that fouling inevitably sends players to the free throw line.

I hope LD realizes that playing Jamal on Rose — the singular move that caused the previous loss to the Bulls — is a disaster waiting to happen, but something tells me we’re going to see more of the same in this game. And I guess hoping to see relevant playing time for Teague is out of the question.

Since the Bibby trade, when Teague plays 20+ minutes, the Hawks are 3-2. When he doesn’t, the Hawks are 3-6.

mr. cunningham, i agree that intangibles are involved but the most glaring negatives with the hawks now are the fact that rick sund is the GM, larry drew is the head coach which are very negatives that will cost the hawks this season. as i predicted, the hawks will suffer and not win 50 games or morer because of the stupid wrong firing of mike woodson. common sense will tell me that if a franchise started out at the bottom and became a contender as the hawks did under woodson, the head coach had to be responsible and was doing the right things.look at the franchise now, thanks to the pistons, bobcats, bucks and the lowly teams on the schedule, the hawks may win a few more games but when they play the good teams, they get blown out on their home floor which rarely happens to the good teams in the NBA.everyone was criticizing woodson but he had discipline and made the players play hard each night.everyone thought pretty offensive plays was going to guarantee the hawks get to the next level. instead, they went backwards.riding themselves of sund and drew might change the direction of the team next season but this year is all but over with for the hawks.in the playoffs, don’t be surprise if orlando or boston sweeps them in the first round.they brought it on themselves with rick sund hiring.

Rare national TV game for me to see that is not an NBA channel telecast with the other team’s crappy announcers. The last time the Hawks were on an away NBA network game, Chicago maybe?, I could not believe how bad the announcers were – made me appreciate Hawks SportsSouth crew even though I don’t get to hear them that often.

The Chicago crew rarely called the game, named the players, etc. just shot the BS and joked around with past players in the stands and such.

I had no idea that a guy who continuosly misses wide open jump shot after wide open jump shot would be considered a shooter. This team also thinks Josh is a shooter, so it figures.

Nobody likes to hear the tough schedule excuse, but sometimes it’s reality. Since Kirk joined the team, they are 5-3 against teams playing .600 ball or worse (including 2 losses to Denver, which is much better than .600 since the Melo trade), 1-4 against teams playing better than .600 ball. Considering how good we look against the lower group of teams and how bad against the upper – we pretty much know where we fit. A .600 club is around 49-50 wins.

That’s also why the JT starting or JT 20+ minute arguments are misleading. That said, I still think he should get all the backup PG minutes and Jamal be limited to SG. I cringe thinking about Jamal defending Derrick Rose.

I believe a lack of intangible qualities;
team attitude, competitive greatness, winning culture, inherent toughness, & character
lead to a breakdown of quantifiable and observable issues with any team.

The HAWKS are no more then a decent team. They could have possibly been a great team if Josh Smith had evolved into the player we all thought he was. No one had any idea that he was basketball dumb, so his talent and leaping ability is more or less useless against superior teams. Marvin Williams has deferred so long to ISO Joe and Josh Smith until his game is lost and may never return. The so-called “CORE” has become a woeful “BORE”. The young talent we do have, Jeff Teague and Hilton Armstrong will be ruined if LD is around next year. Look at what happened to Jordon Crawford when he was traded, he got a chance to begin to blossom. This thing about jump shooting team is just silliness. LD was never a great jump shooter when he played. Encouraging Josh Smith to shoot jumpers is paramount to playing to lose. We play Chicago tonight, if we win that means Chicago was not into the game, we really are not that good of a team with the mindset and soft players we have. A purging is needed, starting with Josh Smith, get something now while we can because he is the best he will ever be and he’s aleady headed downhill. ISO Joe is going to be around and with a new coach possibly a 20 point a game producer. Heinrich must stay because of his grittiness and solid play, that goes for Damian Wilkens also. Zsa Zsa will be more formidable under a good coach’s tutelage. Al Horford needs a lil muscle and bigman school because he will be a perennial allstar. Jamal Crawford, who I endorsed heavily is not going to help us, live by the jumpshot and you die by the jumpshot. It will be time to retool at the end of the season. Our so-called “CORE” is really a woeful “BORE”. I will be waiting for next year because this one is over and hopefully Rick Sund can depart with Josh and Jamal and the HAWKS may live again. I liked them better when they fought like hell to win 13 games.

“The Hawks are a pretty good team. They could try harder, be tougher, show more heart or whatever and I still don’t think they can overcome their shortcomings to become a very good or great team.”

I don’t buy this. The Hawks are a team filled with potential, and although the roster is lacking in some areas, this is still one of the most talented teams in the league. No roster is perfect and that’s why it all comes down to maximizing the the strengths of your players and teams, and developing a system that utilizing the abilities of your players to the greatest extent, while minimizing their deficiencies. Coaching plays a huge role in the NBA, even though many say that it’s a “players league”, and it is.

The problem for the Hawks has always been an inability to play toward their strengths and to stick to what works. Woodson was a flawed coach, but the Hawks were already a “very good team” last season. You don’t win 53 games without being very good. The Hawks biggest problem has always been on the sidelines. Woodson, while he was a competent coach in many areas, had one fatal flaw: the inability to adjust. As I’ve said before, Woodson’s coaching was very easy to assess. Essentially, he’d develop an initial gameplan, and the team would attempt to execute it. If the gameplan worked, we’d typically win easily (as long as the players stuck to the plan), but when the plan didn’t work, or the opposing coach/team made adjustments, we’d typically fail miserably and get blown out.

That’s the reason why we struggled so much in last season’s playoffs. Woodson’s initial game plan against Orlando simply did not work, and he failed to make the proper adjustments. However, the team itself, was still pretty good. Yes, they had their issues with inconsistent play and occasionally a tendency to pack it in when the plan wasn’t working, but those issues are small in comparison to the grand scheme of things.

I truly believe that the right coach could do wonders for this team. A coach who could find distinct roles and actually let our players play to their strengths, while enforcing equal accountability, and preaching the team aspects of the game, rather than the selfish aspects that we often see with the Hawks, this team could really flourish. Now, I’m not saying they would win a championship as is, but I think even with the current roster and the right coach, this team could be a contender if they played in the right system, under the right coach.

What we have now is a coach who is completely incapable of establishing roles and incompetent in terms of even understanding player strengths. Woodson, at the very least, did an adequate job of allowing players to play to their strengths, and even though he had an extremely one-dimensional offensive philosophy and underutilized players like Al Horford, Woodson did get players to play to their strengths. He had Jamal focusing on scoring through isolation (his largest talent), he had Joe focusing on scoring (maybe focusing a little bit too much on scoring), he had Josh playing around the basket and not taking foolish jump shots the way he does this season. Of course, on the opposite end of things, he had Al playing a limited garbage man role and Teague never really saw the court. There were flaws in his philosophy, but in retrospect, his ability to establish roles and maximize player strengths was still better than Drew’s.

Defensively, Woodson would consistently have Joe Johnson defending the other team’s best perimeter scorer, while having Al defend the other teams’ best interior scorers. This was a smart move, consideirng Joe and Al are the team’s best individual defenders on the perimeter and interior, respectively. Drew, on the other hand, routinely put guys like Bibby on the other teams’ best perimeter players, and he continues to put guys like Jamal on players like Rose (which he’ll probably do at some point tonight), meanwhile, he has caused mismatches for Josh on numerous occasions by asking him to guard guys like Scola and Amare in the post, who he’s had little success against, meanwhile Al’s defensive talents have been wasted on the likes of the great Erick Dampier, Joakim Noah, and Ben Wallace (one of the greatest scorers of our time).

The current philosophy is just filled with flaws and Drew’s insistence on having players play to their weaknesses is hurting the team much more than players “not showing enough heart”. Asking Jamal to play point guard, encouraging Josh Smith to take long jump shots, playing Kirk Hinrich at the SG position, etc. These are all examples of players being used in the wrong ways, and all examples of taking away a player’s greatest strength to make him fit into a role that isn’t correct for him. Drew has done this things all season long, and quite frankly, I’m tired of it.

Woodson was flawed, but Drew is not even head coach material. It was the right move to choose a new head coach and let Woodson go, but it was a terrible move to hire Drew. The biggest issue for this team right now is coaching, and I really do not expect them to improve significantly until Larry Drew is replaced. I can understand the team having an inferior record this season (when compared to last season) due to injuries and due to the adjustment made to a new system, but the monumental collapse and regression that we have seen lately is just not acceptable from a team that won 53 games last season, and 47 the season prior (with injuries and without Jamal Crawford). Change needs to be made, and it starts on the sidelines.

Great post Barron

If LD has Jamal defending Rose tonight I think I might be done with this season. Its baffling that LD doesn’t recognize mismatches at times. Its like northcyde said in the last blog, he makes adjustments by going to offense instead of defense…Asik was abusing Zaza last game and LD left Zaza in as if he was playing well. He cant continue to watch guys get abused defensively without making an adjustment. After allowing Detroit to shoot 50% in the last game I cant say I’m feeling too good about this one. Hopefully guys attack the rim and stop settling for jumpshots but this team doesn’t know what attacking the rim means.

Or is it just that they aren’t good at it because all those missed shots from a jump-shooting team, combined with no consistent rebounding outside of Smoove and Al, leading to easy chances on the break for their opponents?

This implies that we get consistent rebounding from Smoove and Al. We don’t. It’s absurd that Smoove averages just 8.7 rebounds a game with his athleticism and strength. And that’s his career high. He could average 12 per game if he stopped trying to be a guard and made his living within 10 feet from the basket. After 7 years of waiting for that to happen, I’m not holding my breath.

And it would be a nice change of pace to see the Hawks at least try to consistently minimize their weaknesses, exploit their strengths, use all of their bona fide rotation players in roles suited for them and see what happens.

I actually think this team has the talent to contend if they do this. If Al went back to being the blue collar Boss he used to be, Smoove focused on dominating at the things he does well (help defense, crashing the glass, owning the paint in transition on both ends) instead of trying to prove he can do things he doesn’t do well (like SHOOTING JUMPERS), Marvin started looking for his shot consistently instead of one game per month, etc.

I talk about this a lot on other blogs, so Ray/AJ/doc/etc feel free to tune out (probably already did). But frankly, we just can’t afford to have our big men out on the perimeter as much as they are. We just can’t. We rate of getting to the line and grabbing ORebs has plummeted since last year. The proportion of our shots that are jumpers has spiked. Most of all of those changes is due to Al and (especially) Josh, who together are getting 25% fewer ORebs and are shooting nearly double* the number of jumpers from outside 10 feet compared to a year ago.

(* Specifically, Josh is shooting 7.02 jumpers from >10ft per game this year, compared to 3.35 per game last year, and Al is shooting 6.44 compared to 3.69. The math comes from their respective Hoopdata pages.)

Even if they both were hitting those jumpers at a high rate, as Al is doing, that’s bad for the team. We have gone from 6th in the NBA in ORebs last year to 27th this year (per ESPN team stats). We went from 9th in the league last year in points in the paint per game to 27th this year (per teamrankings). We went from 22nd in FTAs/gm to 29th (per ESPN team stats).

IMHO, the number one problem on our team is that our bigs hang out around the perimeter way too much on offense. Unless that’s resolved, nothing else will matter. No team contends when 65% of their starting PF and C’s shots are mid-to-long range jumpers.

I blame Drew for a large part of it, but I don’t think simply changing coaches will get Josh to stop trying to be a guard. In any case, I can’t fathom how the team doesn’t see how tough it is to win with big men who play like that.

Our issues stem from the the fact that everyone harped on us last year being too perimeter orientated with JJ and Jamal and the jumpshots so this year they shoot less and it opens up more shots for Al and Smoove however all both of them proceed to do is SHOOT JUMPSHOTS.

The extra shots Smoove and Al are getting are meaningless if they are simply gonna always be long jumpshots

Less isos for JJ so Josh and Al can shoot more jumpshots ?….Im just saying……..

As for the Bulls when we attack them we are successful when we go into our passive mode especially in the frontcourt is where we get into trouble because the Bulls frontline never stops hustling

northcyde,

In the last blog you said this:

“The Hinrich – JJ – Marvin – Smith – Horford lineup has produced an offensive rating of 88 and a defensive rating of 96.”

“So strictly by the numbers, while that lineup is good defensively, something is amiss offensively with that unit so far.”

I don’t have time before my dinner to look it up, but it seems to me that Joe has only had one really good game and two more average games since the trade.

As bad as he’s struggled, it’s no wonder that the nimbers you showed, reflected some offensive deficiencies.

From the previous blog:

northcyde,

Some valid points, but you are way off downgrading Hinrich.

His value is superior to his stats – just like Battier, for instance. It was not a fluke that he was called toream USA.

Jamal on the other hard is worse than his numbers – which are not out of his world.

You will notice that Rod conception of the game is so skewed that he miss understood you: as you say, most of the times when you are down etting stopsyou need to make a move to upgrade the DEFENSE and not try to go with a more offensive line up.

Good teams make runs by getting stops and then getting easy baskets in transition. Just like we did in Portland. In the rare occasions that Jamal plays D we become very good. The problem is that this rarely happens.

Rod thinks just like LD.

People say jt,jc2 ,Hilton & others on our bench can’t play tell me why are we paying them money if lt refuses to play anyone. We don’t know if sy or Etan can play at all because he never gives anyone a chance. Everybody should be playing , I certainly know how they can do any worse than our so called starters whom he is playing too many minutes. Of course he would have to be careful how he rotates them in. From.what we seen he’s not too good at that either. I seen Etan play one game where he looked good expanding a lot of energy. It seemed that was the only time I seen him all season& I watch all the games.

Since Hinrich joined the team 6-6 (not including loss to Denver he has not played.
Hinrich starting PG 2-5
Hinrich starting with Marvin 2-4

The “core” lineup starting Hinrich will continue to lose. I hope when they get blown out tonight he will make the switch. I am sure they are going to play tough the first quarter though.

O’B,

I don’t know the locker room dynamic or what type of personality Smoove has, so I can’t say what I’d do in that situation. Maybe bench him if he takes consecutive jumpers or if he takes a long jumper in the 4th quarter with 6+ seconds left on the clock. Maybe write the offense so that he has to go to the low block on most possessions, and bench him if he doesn’t follow it. Maybe have a heart-to-heart with him and explain that he needs to focus on what he does best and instead of becoming less-bad at the things he doesn’t do best. Whatever approach would work best. But since I don’t know Smoove or how he interacts with the team/coaches, I don’t know what that would be.

“They could try harder, be tougher, show more heart or whatever and I still don’t think they can overcome their shortcomings to become a very good or great team.”

You pretty much summed up the delusion which a lot of Hawks fans have been under since Hubie Brown got those late 70’s teams to over achieve for 6 years. You’ve got to really look at a team in its totality. This team just has a boat load of flaws… The 87-88 team had the attributes you described, but they were as fragile mentally as this team. The last team that was actually better than their opponents sans a very few teams was the 1993-1994 team. However, we all remember how they screwed the pooch on that one!

Teague has to get some serious minutes tonight against the Bulls, or Drew would be a very foolish man indeed. And yeah, Kirk has to stay out of foul trouble.

I think what Drew meant by fouling hard is, if you are gonna send Rose to the line, then give a hard foul, not some tick tack rubbish. That’s why Hawks are soft. When they played Miami, every layup attempt Hawks made was met with a hard foul, and not the kind of soft fouls that end in and 1 attemps. But Hawks, they only swat at the ball, or try to block the shot, thereby letting Wade or Rose run circles around them.

Tonight will be very telling. Hawks needs to stop the talking and get to working, because so far this season, they have not been earning their paychecks. They have been on vacation, in fact. The way Bulls kicked their butt last game should still leave sour tastes on every Hawks mouth. If they are MEN with HEARTS, then they need to show it tonight by getting revenge. A loss, and Hawks would be on a gigantic downward spiral.

Isn’t it sad they we have to be having articles written about our team not have much “heart” or not trying hard enough. That’s unbelievable. These Hawks sure know how to bring their “A” talking game. That’s about all they do. It’s long overdue that they put their freaking money where there mouth is.

Just saying as a longtime Hawks fan, I care deeply about our team. If I’m being paid millions of dollar a year to represent my city, I’m going to use some of that money to invest in psychotherapy, new age healing techniques, the best dietitians and personal chefs, health gurus, top fitness trainers, you name it to be a winner. These guys get drafted or traded to the Hawks, and they eventually start bringing that Losersville attitude. What’s wrong with these people? Why can’t they just shut up and hustle and play ball?

From the previous blog:

Rod,

It’s pointless to discuss with you but even so, I am feeling generous and again will attempt to penetrate in your thick skull.

You believe that scoring points is THE mark of success in the NBA.

This means that your vision of the game is limited to offense.

The myth that offense – most notably individual offense – beats defense has been long shot down, ever since Russell dominated Wilt.

Again on McGrady:

JVG coached McGrady and has that opinion of him in comparison with OTHER NBA PLAYERS AND WITH WHAT NORMALLY HAPPENS IN PRACTICE.

I gave Kobe and MJ’s examples because it was not only their natural given physical talent that made them winners, it was also their competitive edge and their understanding that to work more on their skills would make then achieve better things.

When MJ entered the league, his shot range was limited. He worked his ass off to improve and expand his game.

Both Kobe and MJ always played both ways basketball (with MJ much better and more focused than Kobe).

McGrady never had any remote inclination to play DEFENSE. His cousin Carter is a similar case. Very impressive career stats, a major LOSER.

Defense is hard work. McGrady felt that he did not have to work. He notoriously underachieved.

So Bird did not practice when he was hurt… umm… how about before he got hurt?

Have you read anything about Bird’s life and career?

He was not physically gifted – at all – but he was devoted to the game and his incredibly awkward but effective moves came out of millions of repetitions on his backyard, that is the precise opposite of McGrady, so you better find better examples.

McGrady had a physical talent but never worked enough to develop both his physical game and his understanding of the game.

nire,

Fair enough.

One thing I’ve noticed on multiple occasions, is how Josh’s decision making has led to Kirk committing a foul. There were different instances where Josh has the ball on the breakaway, and instead of giving it to Kirk, Josh tries to do what he does (or doesn’t), and it leads to a turnover.

Kirk ends up running back on D and committing a foul. Another instance I’ve seen is Josh not playing his best man to man defense. Instead, he goes for a steal, misses, and Kirk ends up committing a foul behind him.

Josh is not the only one who does this, so this is why we need everyone to stay together, and play good team defense. Defending Rose will take a team effort.

@Grandad: “I believe a lack of intangible qualities;
team attitude, competitive greatness, winning culture, inherent toughness, & character
lead to a breakdown of quantifiable and observable issues with any team.”

that’s a reasonable view. but i think more often the quantifiable and observable issues are a function of just not being good enough. this is certainly the case for awful teams–no one, for instance, would say the Cavs would be good if they only had more of those qualities. for teams like the Hawks, who are clearly not awful but also not great, it can be a fuzzy area.

“It’s absurd that Smoove averages just 8.7 rebounds a game with his athleticism and strength. And that’s his career high. He could average 12 per game if he stopped trying to be a guard and made his living within 10 feet from the basket.”

Smoove is at a career high defensive rebounding rate this season, in a virtual tie with Al. Where his rebounding rate has taken a huge hit is on the offensive end, where it’s down by 2.5%. How much of Smoove’s drop in offensive rebounding rate is related to scheme and how much is related to willingness?

Next question: how many people with height, strength, and athletic ability comparable to Smoove have ever averaged 12 boards a game? I can’t think of anyone other than Dennis Rodman. Even Barkley and Ben Wallace were a lot stronger than Smoove is.

So much of the problem with Smoove is simply expectations. Hawks fans in general seem to think he’s capable of being so much more than he actually is.

Also from the previous blog:

Rod,

You made an attempt to describe me as a racist due to my praise of Hinrich and my criticism of McGrady and Jamal.

I am glad that you did not pass the level of “attempt”, although I feel that you simply tried not to “step out of bounds” and that your true feelings are those.

For the record, my favorite player of all time is Dominique*. He is the reason why I am an Atlanta Hawks’ fan.

If I were a racist, I would be a Celtics fan since I would have naturally preferred to root for a team with Bird, McHale and Walton back then.

Furthermore, as a child, the player I loathed the most was Koncak, which I considered then to be the #1 factor for the Hawks demise and which absurd contract I linked to a racist driven management decision, making his presence on the floor even more annoying to me.

Now, a few notes on white players: since on average white players are less gifted physically, the guys that make it to the NBA level and succeed are all hard workers, disciplined, mentally tough and the many have a very high basketball IQ to compensate their physical limitations (Bird being a perfect example).

The few exceptions to the above are guys who live off their size or off being shooting specialists and maybe there you will find a few that are only in the league to fulfill kind of a quota.

The above, does not mean – at all – that there aren’t black players which are hard workers, tough, disciplined and have a high basketball IQ.

It simply means that there are many players who live mostly off their physical gifts and do not work other aspects of the game since their physical skills are so tremendous that they don’t need to do that in order to be successful to the point of being seen as starts and making a very good living playing basketball.

This was the case with McGrady, Francis, Marbury, …

“When Josh is ON he is a presence, but he is not ON every single minute of each game and certainly not every game.”

Doesn’t change the fact that his singular presence on defense means more to this team than any other player on that end. You can say he should be better if you want, but you’re talking about what he theoretically could be, whereas I’m talking about what he is.

Of course now that he’s playing with two fouls, there goes his aggressiveness on D.

We really only have one good player on our team these days (Al Horford). When Josh becomes a jump shooter or loses his defensive focus, he’s just an average player at best, and Joe is just a low-efficiency scorer these days. Jamal is just a one-dimensional volume scorer. Sautee, Aaron..

my point was that Al was defended by the center position. he got the ball where he normally does regardless of it being ZaZa or Josh in the game along side him.. but the common belief is that he can’t be effective @ center, guarded by larger guys. he’s looked fine. remember last time Chicago was here, he went off offensively.. mostly playing center.

Of course that Zaza on the floor does not help either, but defense starts on the perimeter.

And LD goes with Collins – who I believe to be a useful rotation player in the right settings – on account of what right now?

Why even bother with this team at this point? The players don’t care, coach doesn’t care, ownership doesn’ care. Every other team in the city has gotten the memo of trying their hardest to give this city a championship. How many times haas Frank Wren come close to exceeding the salary cap with an acquisition? How many times has Thomas Dimitroff cut ties with ANYBODY and ANYTHING holding the team back, save Mike Mularkey.

What baffles me so much is that ownership seems absolutely content with mediocrity since they have risen from the Tyron Lue days. I can guarantee you that if it were the Bulls that took the eventual champs to 7 games as we did Boston a few years back, they would have won a championship by now. Now that I think of it, they were in a similar position when they played with heart against the Cavs in the playoffs and now look at them. Vast improvements have been made and are now and challenging for a championship.

I watch every home town team’s games since I am a diehard Atlantan born and raised. This team is just a flat out disgrace to the city. Lack of character in players, coaching, and ownership and this is the end result. You almost want them to bomb out the rest of the season as well as in the playoffs so we could see some type of change. This is a pain to see.

I thought the Bulls was built on defense. They scored 132 last night, and they have 72 first half points.

Bad defense by Hinrich last 2 possessions. First, he helped off Rose (leading to a Rose 3), and then with the clock winding down, he did not get up on him (leading to a Rose 3).

However, if it was Teague who made those 2 mistakes, some fans would be all over him.

Al was 4/5 shooting the ball in the first quarter, but didn’t get a single attempt in the second quarter, can someone explain that? Rose was embarrassing Hinrich out there, yet Teague didn’t get a minute of playing time, can someone explain that to me? I can no longer ignore the fact that Joe Johnson is highly overpaid. He got paid a quadrillion to be a beast. He plays at the rate of a 6 foot 8 Mike Bibby. SOFT! I’m tired of jumpers. Tired of seeing Josh Smith beyond 10 feet of the basket. Tired of seeing Jamal play as if he is upset he hasn’t gotten a new contract. Tired of Marvin Williams playing like he’s 5 foot 11. I once hated the thought of anyone mentioning a trade of Josh Smith. I say scrap the whole squad (except Horford). Horford is the only one with consistency that plays like a pro. He should be the one the Hawks center the franchise around. Definitely not Joe. I am so embarrassed by this dismal effort tonight. Make Al and Josh go into the post and stay & play there, he!! make everyone take the ball to the basket before jacking up bricks!!

Make everybody play defense or sit on the bench as LD lied about at the beginning of the season (What happened to the new asssistant LD brought in to bring defensive intensity)!!

Reality is:

Team is lost because the coach is lost.

Fan base is weak because team, coach, and ownership are dysfunctional and alienate what little fan base Hawks have.

Hawks always wait until the big stage to embarrass themselves.

Fans cheering for the opponent in your home arena is insane and an indicator that change needs to come.

Woody’s playoff meltdown was bad, but LD’s home losses recently are worse.

The best thing to do is just fire LD tonight during the 3rd quarter but after the game will suffice!!!

Some of you people just don’t get it. It’s not a lack of heart, it’s poor coaching and a lack of execution. When you just fire up a bunch of bad jump shots after isolation plays and give your opponents easy fast break opportunities, what do you expect to happen?

And, for the record, the Nets are not a bad team because they don’t have heart. They have plenty of heart and a very good coach. They’re a bad team because they just don’t have the talent to compete with most teams.

When they lost it was because the other team was just better or they could not pull it out in the end. But they never quit like these guys obviously have. F&#K the ownership situation or the fact that Larry D is an incompetent coach!! Where is the pride they should have for at least for not wanting to play like this?? Game over when your best rebounder at this point is Joe Johnson. Bulls have doubled the Hawks in rebounding and assists. They should give up their checks for this game and donate it to charity. Pape Sy would have stood out in this game. Mike Woodson is sitting back chuckling at this. Of all the silly losses, this one made me reach my boiling point. Gosh, I am so disgusted!!!

He should be crying. He should be ashamed of what he’s done to this team. He’s made a total mockery of this franchise and destroyed any hope of continuing the path of improvement that we’ve been on. I’m just waiting for him to be fired. That will be the highlight of the Hawks season.

LD wouldn’t play Teague against Bibby so nobody could see what an utter imbecile he is.

Now we’ve got to play the Sixers, and they have had 3 or 4 days rest.

Do you realize the historic nature of the home beat downs we are suffering? And many are not nearly as bad as they could be.

Two teams of near equal talent, coaching makes the difference.

Here’s a bit from the story of Lucas’ death last October:

“He really liked being the enforcer-type player,” Jack Ramsay, the coach of that Trail Blazers team and now a radio broadcaster for ESPN, told the newspaper The Oregonian on Sunday. “A great rebounder. A great outlet passer. Then he could score on the post, make jump shots on the perimeter. But mostly it was his physical persona that he carried with him that made us a different team.”

His nickname was “The Enforcer”. Enough said. If Al had a tenth of Lucas’ toughness, we’d be in bizness.

This game is just a microcosm(sp) of whats been happening alot lately, this franchise seems to be content with being just in the middle of the pack, i’m sorry I want and demand much more from all my teams in all sports, you can accept this if you want, some of the comments are just having fun in an otherwise unsuccessful season.

One question I have for us Hawk fans . do you look to build a balanced roster first and then add additional star power… or do you start with your superstar foundation and then build a team around them… everyone has their opinion on that… but for me… it comes down to the fact that when you look at the last decade or so in terms of nba champions… there are a greater number of champions who have added star power to an already solid and balanced team… then there are teams who started with superstars and built themselves up…

Looking at the Hawks how they are currently constituted they will have to this offseason either try and acquire a star player giving up Smith or Horford or just blow up the team and have a fire sale and start over

MsDee

“Rebounding is about effort. We are getting waxed on the boards again. No effort”

This is true, but tonight there are actually some excuses for this. The Bulls were unconscious shooting the ball tonight and hit almost every shot in the first half, while the Hawks shot 50% in the first half. You have to miss shots to get rebounds, and there were almost no defensive rebounds available for the Hawks in the first half. With that being said, there’s no reason why we couldn’t crash the offensive boards, but since Larry Drew puts a great emphasis on transition defense than offensive rebounding, we don’t do that. I would give up transition defense for offensive rebounding, personally, but that’s just me.

At any rate, in the second half, there wasn’t much of an excuse for still being beaten up on the glass. I’ve been incredibly disappointed in Al and Josh for their lack of rebounding lately. Against Detroit, Al looked like he was back to attacking the glass, but then tonight he has another pitiful 3 rebound game, and Josh is struggling to get double-figure rebound games these days as well.

Also, I was very disgusted on one of the possessions we had in the third quarter where our players let a rebound just roll across the lane right into the hands of Luol Deng. That type of thing is just unacceptable. Our guards didn’t even attempt to chase those long rebounds. Al was trying hard to box out and get boards, but other than him and Zaza, I was very disgusted with the overall rebounding effort. Unfortunately, even those who gave effort didn’t come up with many rebounds. It was just very disappointing.

I remember when LD gave himself credit for making sure that the players were ready for road games. But I have never heard him take accountability for performances like this one. Instead, he will say something like “they weren’t ready to play and that is disappointing”. This guy is a snake oil salesmen. The offense was prettier to look at but less effective. Scoring is down, home record is down, and the ASG will likely have to discount playoff tickets (beyond anything they’ve done previously) to get folk to spend their money on this product. Sure, the roster is flawed (and has been for more than just this season), but LD has played this hand more poorly than the previous head coach.

He obviously didn’t have his head in the game. And don’t get me started on shooting jumpers. Dude should attack the rim. Why is Cheeseburger Collins playing? Zaza has been playing decently recently, he just needs to find a rhythm. Also, we should’ve shipped Jamal last year when he had a high trade value. Take Smoove with him too. We still have a solid foundation, but we need a Center so that we can move Horford to PF. PLAY Teague!!! I know he stood out tonight during garbage time, but dude just needs some confidence and just to be let loose; a-la JC2 up in Washington. Tonight was the truth about the Atlanta SOFT’S. Josh Smith commented to Cheryl Miller that “The team does not help each other defensively”. He’s such a joke. Jeff Teague gave em 20 points in 19 minutes but LD is blind to that fact like he was blind to Jordon crawford. If it was not for Teague we would have lost by 50 points. LD needs to sit Josh Smith down and maybe ISO Joe too. Those 2 guys look more like losers every game and they are definitely a disease to the whole team and it’s spreading. The only good thing now is that the season is almost over and they should be blown out early in the playoffs. Stupidity, lack of hustle, lack of simple basketball knowledge, laziness and oh yeh, they are jumnp shooters is killing us. Watch what happens when we play Philly. The same scenario, if we win it’s because Philly lost it themselves, not because we will actually beat them. I don’t know how Woody got them this far but LD has takened them back 3 years. He gave Josh Smith the ok to launch and everybody else followed. Everyone is getting a true look at the “smoove” and ISO Joe. Here’s a lineup change. Hilton Armstrong starts at center, Al at PF, Marvin at SF Heinrich at shooting Guard and Teague at point. Believe me, they would play with more heart. This team is shameful and disgusting and as fans we do not deserve this at all.

A shake up trade should happen. something like Horford for Bogut or Josh to Indy,Granger& ATL future pick to GS for Ellis&Wright to Hawks. I prefer moving Horford first but if Josh trade comes up first then do it. Then trade for Mayo and Robin Lopez or Oden some how and let Crawford walk. Sign McRobers and McGrady and go out compete for something with a new head coach.

You know bad teams can lose by this much, but when you look at us and see we’re a 5th seed in the East, man it just makes this loss that much more sad.

After this, all hope is lost for post-season success, 3 weeks before playoffs and we get destroyed? Chris Webber said it best “This team has no home court advantage”. I’d say it’s sad I was at no point mad about this loss, but it isn’t because in a way I was expecting this team to crumble.

This offseason players need to go, this team needs to be re modeled and finally, LD NEEDS TO BE FU*KING FIRED!!

I would normally scoff at Teague balling during a blowout, but I’m glad he did it tonight.

Like I said 3 weeks ago, the lineup Drew needs to go with is . .

PG – Teague
G – Johnson
F – Smith
PF – Horford
C – Zaza

I want to see Teague and Zaza start, simply because they’re the energy and hustle guys that need to be playing with “the core”. If our big men want to play in the midrange instead of the low block, then start Zaza. And you start Teague to at least have a competent defensive backcourt. Even if Teague can’t stop anybody, he does have the speed to possibly get to lose balls or get steals off bad passes.

Then on the 2nd team, you can have Hinrich – Jamal – Damien – Marvin – and insert your favorite scrub big man as the 2nd unit.

Drew needs to try something . . . ANYTHING . . because the ish he’s telling the team these days isn’t working. And they obviously don’t believe in what Drew is telling them.

It’s sad to watch this team go out like this on the national stage. It reminds me of how my Bengals went out last year. They were just getting embarrassed by everybody.

I guess I’ll reluctantly buy one of those “Free Teague” T-shirts. Might as well start the dude and keep him there for 5 games. See how it turns out.

I have suffered through Nique/Manning trade as a kid. I have seen all the second round knockouts in the 90’s and the rebuilding years of the early to mid 00’s but never have I seen a gutless, heartless and repeat blowouts in one season since I been a fan. Should have hired Byron Scott, Thibideux, Casey, anyone but Drew. Jamal is loafing because he has not contract. Shoulda shipped him out and kept Jordan Crawford. I am done until Teague is named STARTER! ASG cannot stand to bench the high payroll guys for the lower paid players with the heart and its DEMORALIZING for me to see (let alone JTO and Wilkins.)

We have seen that Drew is a 2bit straw man politician puppet for the ASG – now ship his him and his fraudulent offense back to Encino Cali or where ever he lives. I’ve read these blogs and I agree with most of them. The Hawks are playing like they want to hurry up and end this regular season ASAP. This is evident when I causually observed-yes observed, that is because the Hawks management is so poor-that it has changed the definition of what a fan truly is. It starts with TRUST. BOSTON FANS trust that they feel as if they have ownership in their team. Ney York fans, as well. Even Sacramento. So does Chicago, and now-even Miami. What we have here is Atlanta is a stingy 5 or 6 headed monster of an ownership-who, not too long ago had a tyrant who refused to leave, even now, their current-management, The Atlanta Spirit is just plain retarded, restarted. Last year you had a one dimensional coach-who was fired for bringing these Hawks out of a no playoff doledrum, at least, making the playoffs for 5 or 6 years in a row. Now, you have a faux coach-who shouldn’t even be in a head coaching position-display his lack of leadership and control-over a bunch of non-diving for the ball, complacent, overpayed, overrated, dissrespected-at home-group of NBA paycheck cashin, undersized, so-called players who hate their job-uh that be the Atlanta Hawks. I can take any one of these players to another good team-and they will thrive. It may just be me, but I were a head coach, I would not tolerate-not defending, not driving in the lane, not diving for loose balls, not rebounding, and not guarding and shooting suspect jays-on any b-ball court-payed or not payed..

Drew obviously should be fired tomorrow morning. Actually, the morning following the Denver game.

But

We have an ownership situation that will not allow this.

Let’s see…

Owner A is vacationing in Europe
Owner B is in the process of closing on a big deal
Owner C doesn’t care about anything but TV revenue
Owner D is at the game and wishes he could take action but know there no chance because of the above.

Bottom line is that by the time these people find the time to get together and discuss this, none of them will even care or remember.

There is NO WAY Drew would ever coach tomorrow night with any other ownership in professional sports!

Larry Drew doesn’t need another season.

His ‘motion offense’ was over-hyped, and hasn’t delivered. It’s straight up garbage. 5 guys on the floor, all 5 stand around on the perimeter looking for jumpshots. If it happens every now and then, fine. When Josh is still stuck on the perimeter, when Horford absolutely refuses to bang the slightest bit, common. Joke.

I remember Horford played a lot more in the post last season compared to this season. He had a limited arsenal, but he didn’t shy away from going in the post and playing with his back to the basket. He would settle for the hook more times than not, but I don’t even see that out of the dude anymore.

Josh Smith, whatever. Honestly, guy has a world of potential. And I understand he probably doesn’t have the ideal coach/system to be as successful as he can be, but be real. You have to know your strengths and weaknesses as a player. Coaching/system play a major role in it, but at some point, as a player, you by yourself have to understand that maybe you might be better off playing closer to the hoop. Your jumper isn’t consistent enough at this point for you to have to stand around on the perimeter. Run down the floor, turn your back to the basket, and bang dudes with your back turned to the basket. Don’t start facing up, don’t start all the And-1 crossover bullstuff, just bang and try to get your points.

“Yet another reason Teague needs to start, or at least play. He actually makes an effort to set up the big men in positions where they can score.”

I’m all for letting Teague start. I’ve been wanting to see him start since Bibby was around. We’ve all been saying it, he can’t be worse than what we have. It’s like coach limits his minutes thinking he might make mistakes that’ll cost us games or something. Hey coach, you watching? We’re getting whopped by 30+ points as it is.

But, going back to the Horford/Smith talk for a second. This team could take a step forward, even if it is a baby step (better than going backwards which is where we’re going), if Horford and Smith stopped deferring to the gaurds. Both lack “it”. And “it” would mean they’re content with seeing the gaurds dominate the ball. Great bigs don’t like banging around in the post for nothing, if they work hard to get to their spots and bang, they want you to feed them. Neither of our guys does this. Neither is assertive enough. You want leaders? Start with what we’re talking about. Look at guys like D.Howard. I know neither Horford/Smith is on the level Howard is at, but he runs into the paint and demands the ball. He wants the rock in his hands. He wants to be the guy making the decisions.

We’ve talked about it all season. LD’s talked about it before many games in his pregame talks. We need to play inside-out. But that’s just cliche at this point. It blows my mind hearing the Hawks, from the coach to the players, sound as if they understand the problems but still don’t make the adjustments necessary to correct the problem. JJ says we’re a jumpshooting team, and they see it’s not successful, yet they still choose to settle for jumpers.

We need bigs that run to their spots and *demand* the rock be thrown to them. I want them to be angry if the guards don’t feed them in the post. I want them to assume a leadership role on the court. Right now, they watch the gaurds do their thing, and if they can find a spot-up jumper for themselves, they’ll take it. They’re content with the status quo. A real leader won’t let that happen. He’ll get in guys faces if they aren’t feeding the post to get better looks. He’ll get in guys faces if the ball isn’t moving, or if one guy is holding onto the ball too long. He’ll get in guys faces if they keep settling for jumpers they don’t need to be taking 24/7.

We all know the problems. We’ve known them for a long time, but nothing is ever done to correct the problems.

well i missed the fireworks. who went after LD on the bench or was it someone else getting into it? heard it on the broadcast speakers as i left the game.

first time i have left early from a game in a long time. boy it was pitiful, couldnt make sh!t or stop sh!t. totally lost team out there. pass it to someone who shoots, nobody rebounds, they go down and shoot and make it on the first two tries if there is a need for a second try, then it happens again. sad to say marvin looking as good as the worst of them. teague should have been in earlier i guess but it wouldnt have made any difference. got to go to philly and play the team that started all this exposure of these imposters of an nba team.

yes, coaching makes a difference, collins and thib show it, we dont. this franchise runs the way the falcons of old did. spend months deciding to fire or not hire someone then not have a clue who to replace them with starting the process it seems the day after letting someone go. this crap has always started right at the top, cant say i dont wish belkin had somehow gained control, if he truly had a plan to be a champion.

MC boldly called it and gave us the insight months ago to see this team didnt have it by pointing out good teams dont get thrashed the way we did. we all should have noted it last year when at full strength we barely covered the bucks in 7 then got trashed, if that wasnt enough the big losses in the regular season should have given some indication of the worst to come. MC also boldly said it this week that this team really isnt that good, homers may have felt he should have been decried but the team only added to his position. good call MC. many of us here didnt believe what we were seeing or not seeing this summer. i hope everyone including the askg gets it by now.

now what did the askg hear in their interview of drew when they decided to hire him they hadnt heard in the 6 years here. maybe the reason woody didnt listen is his ideas really werent that good at all for the nba. yucky. what is their pr department going to come up with to sell any more of this crap?

Oh yeah, I totally agree. The thing is, though, as long as that continues to be their mentality (especially Al), the Hawks need a guard who is willing to feed them. Teague is a lot more willing to do that than Joe, Kirk, or especially Jamal.

I’m afraid there is no one simple answer that will instantly transform this team into the real contenders we all want them to become.

The core that once was fearsome in a weakened East is now mediocre at best. Benching Marvin and/or playing Teague isn’t going to close the talent/intangible gap that separates the Hawks from the rest of the better teams in the league.

I don’t know if it’s rebuilding time again, but I don’t have much confidence in Rick Sund being the guy to provide a revised vision and, sadly, the team has clearly digressed under Coach Drew.

Whatever the correct set of answers may be, it had better include attracting some superstar talent. It appears the so-called “Detroit model” of a championship team only worked for Detroit, so I think we can put that idea to rest.

The team has a winning record, and that is good, but this team is wrong and we all know it.
