Greetings, all
Hope you’re well. I commend your loyalty if you’re spending a Sunday afternoon with this team (which, if you’re reading this, I presume you are).
A few notes, and on to the game.
1) Your team’s lineup: Al Horford, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Kirk Hinrich, Joe Johnson. Larry Drew said he went with the lineup to match up with Detroit’s size in the backcourt.
2) Drew: “We’ve got to bring a physical style to the way we play. We can’t be a soft team.” I’ll leave it to you to connect the dots. Jeff Schultz is here for a column, and I gather his column will do that for you.
3) I asked Drew Saturday about the possibility of starting blog fave Damien Wilkins. “At this point, I won’t rule out anything. I do love what he brings to the table. His competitiveness, particularly on the guy that he’s defending. He’s one of our best defenders. But he plays with a physical style and I like that and we need that early in the game.”
I’m going to guess that addressing the possibility of Wilkins starting with “I won’t rule out anything” isn’t exactly an endorsement of it becoming a reality.
4) Hopefully you read my story about the Hawks’ leaders not being the types to confront and police one another.
5) Enjoy the game.

Said forward Josh Smith, “I think that we’re afraid to hurt people’s feelings.” He was talking about the captains on the team not making each other accountable. I find that funny because Josh Smith is Mr. STOO-PID. Watch todays game, if he’s hitting jumpers it’s a fluke, and if he is not Detroit will beat us by 20 or more. Who knows what ISO Joe will do, as much as smith launches and Iso POUNDS it takes the rhythm from Al and Marvin who is very suspect anyway (Marvin Williams). As far as defense, this should be a hoot. Jamal is either or and that’s a crapshoot. Time to look at Hilton, Damien and Jeff and I mean a good look today. LD is dumb tho, so he will probably continue on that road.

you can bet that Jamal will be subbed for Kirk.. or you might see Jamal for Marvin and sliding Joe to the 3.
i dont know why LD refuses to balance the roster if he’s going “traditional”. Jeff for Kirk.. Jamal for Joe.. Damien for Marvin..
the only guys that should be interchangeable.. are Marvin, Josh, and Al.. @ front court spots..

I see he’s playing plenty of Jamal at the point again. He’ll probably get away with it against this worthless team and talk himself into that being a good decision going forward.

Wizards 94 Nets 90 w/1- min to go.
Jordan Craw scored 25 on 27 shots last time out. He is establishing himself as a high volume scorer w/a questionable and low fg% to go along with his small size and not as a defensive stopper.
Here’s my point: on a play off team he was never gonna’ get that many attempts. Within a TEAM concept only Superstars with HOF aspirations are tolerated to take so many looks.

Ken S:
Good article on team leadership. Big Ray also posted a good one a couple of weeks ago on leadership from the team captains in which he questioned whether naming 3 captains was a good/bad decision.
This team continues to exhibit its dysfunctional nature in the comments that have been made as well as the way they are delivered (as you pointed out). I wonder if a player’s feelings were hurt midseason over being made accountable for shot selection whether said player would be crying in June if he was wearing a championship ring? Just a thought.
Dynamics of dysfunctionality play out in teams whether they are in the boardroom or on the court: if there is no trust among the team, members don’t share constructive feedback and criticism with each other. If feedback is withheld and the team’s production languishes, personal agendas take precedence over the success of the team.
If the team is afraid to hurt each other’s feelings, maybe they all need to chip in and hire a facilitator. If they want to be elite and win as much as they give lip service about, it’s time for thinking way outside the box!

Fortune 500 companies do it all the time. I’ve witnessed enough dysfunctional team dynamics in my career to fill Philips. At least enough to pinpoint it for this team. Hire a facilitator, complete with personality analysis (emotional intelligence is my personal favorite) and learn how to work together.
Many on this blog have said “blow up the blessed core,” but that’s indicative of changing the dynamic in hopes that the dysfunctionality is addressed. IMHO, blowing up the core isn’t necessary IF they figure out how to build trust among the core allowing them to function as a successful team.
My example of successfully addressing a team dynamic to create trust and feedback would be what Doc Rivers did with the Celtics when Ray, KG, and Paul came together. I suggest a facilitator for the Hawks b/c I don’t think LD has the wherewithall to do what Doc did.

Hawks were 2-1 with the Teague/Hinrich starting back court. They won against one quality opponent (Blazers), blew out one not so quality opponent (Bucks), and lost to one quality opponent (Nuggets). Teague didn’t play all that well against the Nuggets, and ever since then he’s out of the rotation.

True. And maybe just as important, even when he didn’t have good games scoring, it’s not like he killed the overall ability of the offense to score. When Jamal plays the point, if he’s not hitting his jumpers, the ball never goes inside and never rotates so the entire offensive flow stops.

LD did what Woody did. Shorten the rotation. And with the playoffs around the corner, alot of teams shorten their rotation.
However, in 30 minutes (a big part of which he played backup PG), Jamal had 9 pts and 2 assists. I think LD should have given Teague some of those minutes. Jamal should have gotten some of JJ’s minutes (JJ played 42).
Stuckey had 22 points. I wonder how many of those points came against Jamal.
Good game by Marvin, so that explains why Damien only played 4 minutes.
But overall, the Hawks won, and we will see if they carry over this ball movement/get closer to the rim to the Chicago game.

i think many of us are no longer impressed by wins against opponents whom you should beat at home. what we’d like to see is consistency w/ in our team. from play, to philosophy, to rotations. this is all still in questions only weeks away from playoff basketball. so while you might feel a win against a non playoff Detroit Piston team is something to write home about.. most would rather observe strategy that will make us a better team and avoid playoff embarrassment.

The Suggestion Box!
I would, however suggest that Teague do get 15-20 mins at PG, behind Kirk. That is my only suggestion for today’s game. But, in fairness to Coach Drew, Marvin starting does make the back court bigger and we lose nothing whatsoever on defense. Marvin does a very nice job there @ SF. Which, moves Al back to Center and Josh to PF. Given how this roster is constructed? Today’s line up is our BEST starting five. It also, returns stability to the bench rotations.
Hopefully, this close to the play offs? We can stop experimenting with the starters and settled down for a post season run. This IS our team, you can love it or hate it. Since, all the trade deadlines have past? There isn’t a damned thing Drew or anyone can do about the roster now. We got needs fellas! We got needs!

if Marvin gives the production he gave today on a more (consistent) basis i would personally be pleased. however, i cant expect it. in fact i believe his play today, and of late has stemmed from establishing comfort w/ in his role by coming off the bench. today’s game looked like a carry over. when does Marvin ever make most of his open looks? given Drew has made it clear that we’re set w/ the “traditional” lineup going forward lets see if it continues. we’ve seen stretches of decent play from Marvin.. 1 or 2 great games.. but its more of a rarity..
i feel you could slide Damien in that starters slot and not miss a beat.. at this point, i think the only thing Marvin gives you over Damien is length which aids his rebounding ability. however, i feel he’s maximized coming off that bench..

I don’t care if Teague sits in the bleachers and sips mint juleps the entire practice. From what we have all witnessed during the recent games in which Teague started he deserves more playing time. He should start and get major minutes. It makes no sense that he did not play today.
Teague’s DNP-CD says a whole lot more about LD than it does Teague.

@ignition kirk is not a scrub! in fact he’s a very solid basketball player! jordan crawford is a one-dimensional player who can score but nothing else. he would be great in a 21 league. he can’t play defense or pass–he can create and launch jumpers–man i would love to watch him play a game of 21.
basketball is a team game folks and until you and some of the hawks realize this they’ll never have much more success than they have had…if i see smoove or jj look right at open hinrich and make the more difficult pass to a lesser shooter than kirk than i’m going to puke. hit the open guy people–it’s pretty simple!

Why would a fan want to purchase a ticket to see the Hawks?
What are you [as a fan] least likely to see;
a. Hawks blow-out opponent
b. Hawks quit and get blown out
c. Hawks narrowly escape after playing poorly -vs- bad team
d. Hawks lead for 3 qtrs yet lose to a good team after a 4th qtr meltdown
Do they play a brand of B-ball that’s exciting to watch?
editors note:
after watching the kids in the tourney [Mrch Mdnss] this week
with the enthusiasm and heart with which each team plays,
it kinda makes a Hawks game look dull.

Regular season college basketball is awful. They play harder during March Madness because it’s one and done. NBA players play hard during the playoffs too. Anyway, just because NBA players are not flailing limbs and running around like chickens with their heads cut off doesn’t mean they are not trying hard. Players with that level of athleticism are capable of trying hard without looking like it. Andruw Jones used to catch sh-t from Braves fans early in his career for supposedly not trying hard, when in reality he was just so good that he could make difficult plays look easy.

I sure as heck don’t.
They have quit on this season.
Okay, it’s not the play-offs, so we should expect less effort?
Then why does ASG still charge admission for the games?
Are the players getting paid?

I know everyone on here, including me is mad that Teague got a DNP, but if we look at what Marvin gave us tonight, if he can consistently give us numbers like that this team becomes that much more deadly, I mean it seems like 50% of his shots are wide open anyways he just needs to hit them.
I’m glad Damien got some court time but 4 minutes LD, really? The guy was the only one, along with Teague, to show any heart a couple nights ago when we got blown out, you want to reward people that don’t deserve it and shun anyone else, please see the door.

Grandad that’s why I don’t go to the Hawks games no more. I never know if they are going to play hard or quit. With gas prices at $3.40, rising food prices, and high unemployment, why would you pay your hard earned money to see a group of millionaires give a half-assed effort on the basketball court?
The Hawks don’t care about the fans so the fans really don’t care about the team. Even Joe Johnson said he don’t really care about who shows up when the Hawks were getting whipped by Orlando last year. That’s why you have so many people in the stands cheering for the opposing team.

The Hawks are just plain fundamentally unsound!! Which means they suck..In two years they will be out of the playoff picture if something drastic does not get done.. But with that huge earthquake being predicted along the New Madrid Fault line sometime in the near future on a scale like the one that hit Japan several days ago we may not have to concern ourselves with this lousy franchise much longer…..FYI, there has been a swarm of small earthquakes in Arkansas this year! Uh Oh!
“The Natural State has felt its fair share of earthquakes. In 1811-1812 a series of powerful earthquakes measuring over magnitude 7.5 rattled the residents of northeast Arkansas. Cabins collapsed, people were frightened, and the land surface was severely changed by liquefaction. These earthquakes happened in the New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ), an active fault system that extends from Cairo, Illinois to Marked Tree, Arkansas. The earthquake zone has been active for hundreds of years. What if another series of major earthquakes were to strike this region again? Would your business or family be prepared?” WOW…………

Teague still needs coaching, and he needs repitition. This was a game that LD could have found 12-15 minutes for Teague, and he could use it as a teaching tool and a confidence builder.
Instead, Teague only got garbage minutes against the Heat, did not get any minutes today, but yet if LD brings him in against D. Rose, he will expect a certain level of play from Jeff.
After the trade, LD consistently compliments Teague’s play, and his speed, and his defense etc. but once again, his words and his actions are 2 different things.
All season long, I think LD has missed out on certain teaching opportunities that would have helped Teague be further along.

Why don’t we run more pick & rolls with JJ and Smoove, the defense would either cheat on JJ and Smoove would roll right to the hoop for the layup/dunk or kick-out, or they would go under the pick and JJ could take a nice mid-range jumper, this should be one of our main options on offense.

Jae: Because you are smarty than Drew. He is a career backup that should have stayed that way. He won the battle of the career backup coaches today. It is always a good choice to get your 2 best players on the same side of the court and since Horford and Smith both have limited post up games, running pick and rolls with Joe and Josh and Joe and Al make great since also Joe posting up with Al feeding him makes great since considering the double down or scrape down would likely come from Al’s man. Drew is a garbage coach that sit around for 20 years thinking about running his dream offense which is not good for his team when he finally got one.

you know, it wasn’t that long ago when 100% of the people on here were screaming for a trade before the deadline…… any trade…. saying that if they didn’t then it just proves Sund and the ASG just don’t care about the team. I’m not defending them, but they made a trade. I don’t understand why it’s such a problem now. I personally love the addition of Kirk, you cant compare his game play with Bibby’s and have Bibby come out on top.
as for the basketball player formally known as jc2…. we didn’t need him. they only drafted him because they thought JJ wasn’t coming back. and i would take teague over crawford any day. Of course his stats looks fantastic, he plays for the Wizards! do you think Kevin Love would have those consecutive double-doubles if he played for any team better than the Timberwolves? no way. it’s not hard to put up numbers when youre a decent player playing for a not-so-decent team. Let’s see crawford put up 20 points a game if he’s playing regular minutes for a top seeded team.
I say we continue to start kirk and bring teague off the bench for the rest of the season. hopefully by next season it’ll be the other way around. I like starting kirk and jeff in the back court but that line up is just too small to be effective for us. but in order for teague to be at his prime to start next season he does actually have to play THIS season.

Kirk Hinrich was a horrible move. He adds to the payroll next year by $1 million and we lose a player for next year because both Jordan and Mike were under contract. He is in the way and gives LD someone he can play instead of developing Teague. He does not make the team any better and finally you give up 2 1st round picks for him, one of which you already see is a rotation player and could have been a huge asset for the Hawks due to the fact he will be making less than $2 million last year as opposed to paying Jamal $6-8 million. The ASG, Rick Sund, and Larry Drew must go.

[I wish the Hawks did not give up JC2 and a 1st rounder. It would have been nice to keep JC2 as insurance just in case the Hawks either (a) don't resign JC1 or (b) cannot pick up another decent G at a cheap price.]
And to echo the sentiments of other bloggers: What is up with Teague’s DNP-CD decision tonight? For most of the season, I have had no problems with LD not playing Teague much. That trade is all about hinrich vs. bibby and who is better at the point. if you think we shouldnt have done the trade and kept bibby then you are an even bigger moron than i first thought. and we still have a seasoned vet to help teague along. as good as he is he’s not great, and definitely needs someone there to help him tweak his game. It would have been nice to have been able to keep the pick but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Of course our 7 man (with the exception of 3 minutes by Wilkens) is what good teams start doing this time of year, shortening their rotations.
The Trailblazers have only played 9 guys tonite, with 6 minutes being the least.
The Lakers have played 10 guys, with 9 minutes to go in the 4th.
The Knicks shortened their rotation by only playing 10 guys
The Suns only played 10
Houston only played 9
OKC played 10 players
Dallas was down to 11 players that played today
Last game, the Heat only played 11
Denver played 10
The Celts did only play 8, but only 1 played over 36 minutes, and all played at least 19. They do happen to have both the O’Neal’s out inured
The Griz played 11
The Spurs played 12 folks
The Sixers played 10
Yep, all the good, playoff teams are starting to shorten their rotations. They’ll probably still play all their guys 35+ minutes after they’ve clinched their playoff seeding.
No, LD is the only Coach poor enough, bad enough to shorten his rotation to really 7.

Injuries, players not performing, Drew not playing Teague, JC2 taking 27 shots per on a losing team, Sund on vacation, ASKG being the equivalent of 8 orangutans throwing feces, Mr. Woodson’s spirit lingering in the rafters throwing hexes on the basket and still calling plays from his living room couch:
I really don’t care why it is, but The Hawks have certainly regressed since last season. Now what? What’s next?
Do we become a dark horse, a sleeper team in the play offs and surprise some people. Can we! Will we? Will their fans show up and cheer or stay true to their boo?

1st, I must say, your post yesterday,
which critiqued my post,
was accurate.
After some thought, I agree that to dismantle
as much as I suggested, also suggests that
in reality the Hawks are not as close as I
would like to believe.
Thgerefore, I give you kudos for bringing that
to my attn.
Now go to bed and leave the adults alone.

Tonight Jordon Crawford tallied 21 points alongside John Wall. Can we say one helluva tandem in years to come. LD and HAWKS management have no clue about basketball. The same brain trust is watching a cheap coach possibly ruin a budding superstar in Jeff Teague and a solid big man in Hilton Armstrong. We all know LD is through, the question is WHEN? As soon as possible is way to late. I really wanted to give LD a chance but he is dumb man, just a 2nd tier assistant coach. On a good note Jamal played within the offense and i’d much rather see him launch 3 pointers within the confines of the offense then that “smoove” person. By the way the “smoove” hit a few lucky ones in the last 3 minutes, he’s gonna be bigtime “STOO-PID” now, which is scary. ISO Joe POUNDED some but not as much and is becoming more aggressive going to the hoop. Twenty mill should be a reason to run over Shaq’s bigass. Marvin may be tired of starvin, he’s trying and is scoring, could that be confidence? Hell if you watch Josh launch and miss you gotta know that you can shoot better. We play Chicago tuesday and it’s no sense in even thinking LD has a game plan, the man has no clue but let’s see if the players can tighten up on defense and hope their basketball acumen comes into play.

Hawks -vs- Bulls:
Larry Drew turns to yet another starting line-up strategy:
[1] = Joe
[2] = D.Wilkins
[3] = Josh
[4] = Al
[5] = Jason Collins
LD will dub this his really, really big lineup.

Drmaryb when we lost to the nets Williams was still in Utah. Jc2 will be a star in this league very quickly, for ld to play mo over him was completely dumb, just like ld playing jc1 over jt,the only way er can complete is for us to run the floor, we certainly don’t have a chance playing a half court game.kh is not that type of pg

Sunday was Jamally Wally’s 31st birthday. Uncle Larry couldn’t let mean ol’ Jeffy Weffy Teague take minutes away from LD’s fav. No way.
Just checked the stats. Didn’t realize just how horrid Jamal has been playing.
He shot 37.5% in Feb., 31.7% from 3, only 2.6 assists per game in Feb.
March is not much better: 41.3% shooting, 31.8% from 3, and 3 assists per game.
He’s only averaging 11.9 and 11.7 ppg in Feb. and March also.
Maybe he’s just not aging well?

Concerning Joe,I was wondering if his lack of desire to take the ball to the hoop, like Wade,Kobe, and Brone is because of that fall he took while he was a Sun?He seems to avoid contact when he is near the basket instead of accepting contact and getting fouled.Joe is a big dude and with his ability to get in t he paint,he should be shooting more FT’S,but he fades, instead of leaning into his man and getting fouled. Come on Man,Joe,take it to the hoop and take it straight, instead of fading.

Drew used a three-guard lineup at times in large measure because he said he’s trying to help reserve Jamal Crawford break out of a slump. Crawford made three-of-eight shots for nine points — his third single-digit scoring game in the past four, including a scoreless outing in Friday’s loss to the Heat..
After reading this on the other blog, I had to post it over here. LD makes no sense to me. To help Jamal break out of a shooting slump, LD gave him more minutes at backup PG?
Atlanta reserve guard Jeff Teague, who recently started three straight games with Kirk Hinrich moving over to shooting guard, Joe Johnson from shooting guard to small forward, and Marvin Williams to the bench, did not play. In Friday’s loss to the Heat, he did not play in the first half.
Drew explained: “Jeff has done a great job since the trade.. I really wanted to look at a few things and put him in the lineup [last week]. When we made the trade, we brought Kirk Kinrich in here to run things. I think I really need to get into that frame of mind as we get down the stretch. Kirk is going to be our point guard. Jeff will find some minutes.”.
How is he supposed to find minutes? If Jamal gets injured? If the team is up or down by 20?
Its only his first year, but I might need to get one of Clyde’s T-Shirts for LD.

You know I think we’ve all giving LD the benefit of the doubt on several occasions throughout the season, but at this point status quo has become stagnant and predictable. We get it LD, you’ve been a assistant long enough and you ain’t going back!!! Unfortunately, coach you gotta look at the big picture…the future starts this year for this franchise moving forward. 2011-12 looks like this….. JC1 gone, JC2 (balling in DC), no 1st rd pick to compensate for those losts, JJ looking more like a SF than SG, and J Smooth excited about building on his less than spectacular jumper. The pros to this situation is that we finally know what to do with Marvin (a productive bench player who will takeover JC1 point production next year…yeah right) and Teague who will still be looking looking to break into the regular rotation (definitely through no fault of his own), and last be not least Capt. Kirk, who’s a player every teams love to have but is shipped off the first chance they get. However this is a pro because both Chi and Wash pgs elevated their games w/ Capt. Kirk on the roster so Teague should be next in line. YOU HEARD IT HEAR FIRST!!!!

Ive seen ALL the teams play in the NBA this season and I am convinced the HAWKS HAVE THE BEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. Since the Hinrich trade, however, the Hawks have been playing some of the worst basketball in the league just barely playing better than the Cleveland Caviliers. The Hawks have but 12 games remaining. All the Hawks have to do to get their confidence back is to win 10 out of their last 12 games, go 10-2 and finish with 50 wins. I think if the Hawks can accomplish that they will have the impetus and the momentum to propell them into winning the NBA championship. GOOD LUCK!

I hate to be the one to be down on the Hawks, but the Kirk Hinrich trade was a mistake. it was NOT a mistake, however, to dump mike bibby. bibby has absolutely NOTHING LEFT IN THE TANK. Like Marvin Williams, Bibby was giving you absolutely nothing out on the court every night. To get Hinrich, though, we gave up much too much. We should have given up MARVIN WILLIAMS, and MIKE BIBBY to acquire Hinrich. That would have made more sense. We would still have the services of Jordan Crawford (FUTURE HALL OF FAMER) and Mo Evans (all-star reserve) by virtally unloading literally horse maneur (bibby and marvin) and getting back greatness (Hinrich). UNFORTUNATELY IT DIDNT WORK OUT THAT WAY.

I hear LD has settled on Heinrich, ISO Joe, that “smoove” thing, Al and Marvin as his starting lineup. Last evening we saw what that lineup was capable of against Chicago. It will be destroyed by Philly also. The jumpshooters will be at it again. If that “smoove” person hits a few baskets or have one of those infrequent nights where his jumper is falling(which is a fluke) it will inhibit other aspects of the game. All that kid thinks about is a highlight film. I was watching him late in the 3rd quarter when LD started subbing and it was there right on his face…Duuuhhh, what happened, I should have shot 20 more times, I only got 12 points(dummer then dirt look). If Teague does not start then LD is more dense then I thought. He’s a pitiful looking coach, not sure if he needs to think. Obviously he does not have a clue. The game should go like this, ISO Joe will POUND, Josh Smith will launch, Al will lose interest, Marvin will be lost and Heinrich will lose focus and the “SOFT’S” will lose another game, but, if we happen to win believe me, it was a total mistake on Phillies part.
