Hawks-Pistons game thread

Greetings, all

Hope you’re well. I commend your loyalty if you’re spending a Sunday afternoon with this team (which, if you’re reading this, I presume you are).

A few notes, and on to the game.

1) Your team’s lineup: Al Horford, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Kirk Hinrich, Joe Johnson. Larry Drew said he went with the lineup to match up with Detroit’s size in the backcourt.

2) Drew: “We’ve got to bring a physical style to the way we play. We can’t be a soft team.” I’ll leave it to you to connect the dots. Jeff Schultz is here for a column, and I gather his column will do that for you.

3) I asked Drew Saturday about the possibility of starting blog fave Damien Wilkins. “At this point, I won’t rule out anything. I do love what he brings to the table. His competitiveness, particularly on the guy that he’s defending. He’s one of our best defenders. But he plays with a physical style and I like that and we need that early in the game.”

I’m going to guess that addressing the possibility of Wilkins starting with “I won’t rule out anything” isn’t exactly an endorsement of it becoming a reality.

4) Hopefully you read my story about the Hawks’ leaders not being the types to confront and police one another.

5) Enjoy the game.

The only thing positive about this hawks season is that it is helping Mike Woodson get another coaching job.

i did like the ball movement i saw..

question is, will it continue against better defense when jump shots are not dropping..

Woodson has not gone anywhere.

We run the same offense, we have the same player rotation, and Jeff Teague is still on the bench. Only difference is we are playing more man to man on defense.

I’m with you, bigdave. A lot of the Hawks current problems are best helped by having Teague and Damien in the regular rotation. Why LD insists on Jamal at the point is beyond me.

Coach is starting to look like he’s trying to force issues with his personnel, rather than putting each player in the best position to play to their strengths.

Do you think Teague will get any PT in the first half?

I just hope when LD brings Jamal in the first quarter, he does not sub him for Kirk.”

Even Josh knows the team is better with Teague on the floor. Fire the Sports South crew also. They are trying to make it seem like the hawks are back on track.

The Hawks dont have the money to sign a pg, the pieces to trade for one ,nor the draft picks so you would think they would develop the young one they have. Not saying Teague will be great but I think he could be solid starter. Hinrich is a stop gap not a long term answer. The Hawks just never have a plan so it wont be shocking to see them still looking for an upgrade at point in the next few years.

LD did what Woody did. Shorten the rotation. And with the playoffs around the corner, alot of teams shorten their rotation.

However, in 30 minutes (a big part of which he played backup PG), Jamal had 9 pts and 2 assists. I think LD should have given Teague some of those minutes. Jamal should have gotten some of JJ’s minutes (JJ played 42).

Stuckey had 22 points. I wonder how many of those points came against Jamal.

Good game by Marvin, so that explains why Damien only played 4 minutes.

But overall, the Hawks won, and we will see if they carry over this ball movement/get closer to the rim to the Chicago game.

I wish some of these bloggers would get press credentials. Nothing against MC and Ken S. who both do a great job, but they both get paid to cover this team on a daily basis, which means they can’t really ask the kind of questions that would p-ss people off or else people won’t be willing to talk to them anymore. I’d love to see someone like Bret LaGree from Hoopinion get into LD’s postgame press conferences and just ask him about Teague every game.

WOW! I come on here and read where some fans are complaining about certain players didn’t play. They won people! UNBELIEVABLE! I see now why these owners could careless about building a championship team because the fans are more concern about who plays than winning games. Keep on sending mix messages and see how far you get.

This team sucks and Larry Drew is the main reason. Another DNP for Teague and there is no reason for it. The truth is as we all know Larry Drew would rather play anyone other than Teague. Beating a team as sorry as Detroit at home by 8 is nothing to get excited about.

i think many of us are no longer impressed by wins against opponents whom you should beat at home. what we’d like to see is consistency w/ in our team. from play, to philosophy, to rotations. this is all still in questions only weeks away from playoff basketball. so while you might feel a win against a non playoff Detroit Piston team is something to write home about.. most would rather observe strategy that will make us a better team and avoid playoff embarrassment.

you sound like you work for the Hawks vs a fan that sat through this last home stand of crappy play.

What if he played Joe, Al, or Josh
with the inconsistency with which
he plays Teaguer & Jason Collins?

Would he then expect all-star results?

He was never fired. Until you agree with that? You remain autistic to me, which is worse that being fired from any BS job.

The Complaint Department!

They Lose, some bloggers complain. They win, same bloggers complain. Perhaps, the blog should be renamed:

The Complaint Department.
_____________

This team, The Pistons match up very well to The Hawks, (much like The Bucks). The Pistons beat the Hawks last time out by 23 points. So, since this win doesn’t matter, would you be much happier if we lost? I’m just wondering?
_____________________

The Suggestion Box!

I would, however suggest that Teague do get 15-20 mins at PG, behind Kirk. That is my only suggestion for today’s game. But, in fairness to Coach Drew, Marvin starting does make the back court bigger and we lose nothing whatsoever on defense. Marvin does a very nice job there @ SF. Which, moves Al back to Center and Josh to PF. Given how this roster is constructed? Today’s line up is our BEST starting five. It also, returns stability to the bench rotations.

Hopefully, this close to the play offs? We can stop experimenting with the starters and settled down for a post season run. This IS our team, you can love it or hate it. Since, all the trade deadlines have past? There isn’t a damned thing Drew or anyone can do about the roster now. We got needs fellas! We got needs!

Marvin! God bless him and his Grandma. On THIS team? Marvin is a starter. He gives us something at the SF that no one else on this roster can:

Size
Rebounds
Perimeter Defense
Scoring
Post Ups
Drives

Since Bibby was traded, the Hawks are 3-2 when Teague gets 20+ minutes (both losses to Denver) and 3-6 when he doesn’t.

The margin of victory in those 3 Teague wins is 16.7 points. The margin of victory in the three non-Teague wins is 6 points.

in fact i think there is an argument to made that fans who (are) content w/ single wins or 46 wins or so a season and a 1st/2nd rd. playoff exit due to the same damn glaring deficiencies, keep us further from a championship than those of us who arent; those who cant adopt the philosophy that we somehow show our disgust for management, coaches, and players by going to more games and financing more mediocrity..

bigdave

if Marvin gives the production he gave today on a more (consistent) basis i would personally be pleased. however, i cant expect it. in fact i believe his play today, and of late has stemmed from establishing comfort w/ in his role by coming off the bench. today’s game looked like a carry over. when does Marvin ever make most of his open looks? given Drew has made it clear that we’re set w/ the “traditional” lineup going forward lets see if it continues. we’ve seen stretches of decent play from Marvin.. 1 or 2 great games.. but its more of a rarity..

i feel you could slide Damien in that starters slot and not miss a beat.. at this point, i think the only thing Marvin gives you over Damien is length which aids his rebounding ability. however, i feel he’s maximized coming off that bench..

ask Roy Williams..
